RIP Andreas Kay, recently taken by brain tumour, & whose extraordinary repository of images lives on. His photography & evident love for the smaller creatures of forests has had a huge influence on my art.

This sturdy fellow is Bryophryne bustamantei, a type of fleshbelly frog of the family Craugastoridae. Frogs of this family are numerous and scientifically ill-defined, needing further taxonomic classification and study. This particular species is endemic to southeastern Peru in the Cusco Region. Noblella is a genus of frogs in the Craugastoridae family. They are found on the eastern slopes of the Andes and in the Amazon Basin in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and western Brazil. The name refers to Gladwyn K. Noble, who described the first species. Taxonomy Noblella was originally erected to accommodate Sminthillus peruvianus, but subsequently synonymized, first with Eleutherodactylus (1971) and then with Phrynopus (1975). Noblella was resurrected by De la Riva and colleagues in 2008. At the same time, they put Phyllonastes into synonymy of Noblella. However, Noblella, as currently defined, might still be polyphyletic. The AmphibiaWeb keeps Noblella in Strabomantidae, a family no longer recognized by the Amphibian Species of the World. Description Noblella are small frogs measuring up to 22 mm (0.87 in) in snout–vent length. Head is no wider than the body. Tympanic membrane is differentiated except in Noblella duellmani. Dorsum is pustulate or shagreen. Venter is smooth. Species There are at least 12 species: Noblella carrascoicola (De la Riva and Köhler, 1998) Noblella coloma Guayasamin and Terán-Valdez, 2009 Noblella duellmani (Lehr, Aguilar, and Lundberg, 2004) Noblella heyeri (Lynch, 1986) Noblella lochites (Lynch, 1976) Noblella lynchi (Duellman, 1991) Noblella madreselva Catenazzi, Uscapi and von May, 2015 Noblella myrmecoides (Lynch, 1976) Noblella personina Harvey, Almendáriz, Brito-M., and Batallas-R., 2013 Noblella peruviana (Noble, 1921) Noblella pygmaea Lehr and Catenazzi, 2009 Noblella ritarasquinae (Köhler, 2000) AmphibiaWeb also tentatively includes "Eleutherodactylus bilineatus" in Noblella, whereas the Amphibian Species of the World only gives it a familial placement. source - Wikipedia
