Ron Cowie
Ron Cowie is a Rhode Island based photographer that is well known for his wet plate collodion process that he prints in Platinum. Cowie works with fine art photography as well as commercial photography that spans from wedding photography to deeply personal work. The series I want to focus on today is a set of images that I initially believed to be his commercial photography work, although after reading the description I realize it’s an extremely personal series. The series is named Inventory and deals with the sudden loss of his wife in 2008. His wife was always very fond and protective of her possessions and therefore he would never touch them. He felt the same way after her death and didn’t know how to deal with clearing out her stuff without betraying her. He claims after contemplating and asking his dead wife out loud, she gave him the idea to photograph her possessions in a wet plate collodion method then to print them in Platinum. He spent the better part of the spring and summer after her death making photographs of his wife’s priceless possessions. Its interesting to me how a narrative change the whole concept of an art work. How the seemingly mundane subject of clothing and accessories can mean something so deep to someone. Knowing the story behind the work definitely makes the images more interesting.

Does Winx really need a fairytale to be the marked the greatest?
For instance, Super Impose is rightfully regarded as the greatest miler in Australian racing and so good he was also effective in Melbourne Cups. But while he produced scintillating performances, he didnt give me the same buzz and I reckon at weight-for-age over 1600 metres Winx would beat him.

My champions are Winx, Makybe Diva, Sunline, Black Caviar, Kingston Town and Tulloch. Unlike the others, Black Caviar was restricted in distance and cuddled to the extreme but she still produced that aura.
Makybe Diva, Black Caviar, Kingston Town and Tulloch all had happy endings while Sunline, whose trainer Trevor McKee, 81, died last week, was past her prime aged seven when ending her career unplaced in the 2002 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.
Thats the strength with Winx: shes now seven and, according to Kerrin McEvoy who rode her in a track gallop recently, she feels like a four-year-old.

Winx has never had an off-day, something which trainers cant put their finger on but crops up in long and demanding careers. Kingston Town and Tulloch were afflicted. No doubt, on some occasions Winx has been more off than on, but the principal behind this masterpiece Chris Waller should take a bow for keeping her so good for so long.
Only Kingston Town compares with her versatility. Winx could have won an Everest and been very competitive in a Melbourne Cup geared around what weight she would have been given.
Tulloch didnt sprint like the others but Makybe Diva could have been prepared to take a group 1 mile.
Of course, the Queen Elizabeth has been a farewell blight for the exceptional. Octagonal, on the slide, went down in 1997 and Lonhro was beaten at $1.26 in 2004.
Every bit as popular in 1973, Gunsynd couldnt account for Apollo Eleven, a top New Zealand weight-for-age horse, but departed in style with a graceful bow in front of the grandstand every bit the show pony.
Alas, there have been more dramatic exits, particularly Bernborough in the 1947 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington when he broke down badly. Tears were shed and the fear of Winx coming to grief is the stuff of nightmares. But horses can come undone in their stall at night.
Fortunately, Bernborough was saved for stud purposes and was a very successful stallion in the United States.
Some old-timers reckoned Bernborough was better than Phar Lap, who ended his racing on a high note with a world-beating effort in the Aqua Caliente Handicap at Tijuana, Mexico, in 1932.

Phar Lap the one and only, a freak, a horse of the century, Banjo Paterson wrote in 1931. The 20th century but I dont get the reaction off statistics that comes from being in the presence of a champion.
Eras differ so much. Considering South Sydney's past greats with the current workhorse, Sam Burgess, Bob McCarthy and Ron Coote come to mind. But going back to Clive Churchills time in the 1950s and the great pack of Jack Rayner, Bernie Purcell and Chic Cowie too much has changed to make the comparison.
Racing, too, has also transformed: from open barriers, rough tracks, huge weights, constant racing and no drug control.
Once upon a time, a trainer would shout for a horse. Brandy was the tipple to improve speed, stamina and courage but is outmoded.
The analytic process now is so acute it could pick up a bee sting unless it comes from China. The modern thoroughbred in a highly tuned equine machine and none purr with the same power as Winx. Is she the greatest? You be the judge.

Exciting Competition at the Lucas Oil, NHRA 2018 Winternationals!
Exploding engines, crashes, and a new record kicked off the 2018 NHRA calendar at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, California. Early on, Funny Car legend John Force shed the body off of his Peak Auto Chevrolet Camaro, while his daughter and last year’s champion Brittany Force went along for the ride as her Top Fuel car hit both walls and rolled over. She was taken to the hospital and treated for an injured shoulder.

The 11,000hp monsters powering some of these cars, though strong, can have a tough day. This was the case for Kalitta Motorsports driver Doug Kalitta, whose Top Fuel engine erupted into a fireball in the first elimination round of competition. Despite this, he came back to nudge out Tony Schumacher for the win in Top Fuel.
World champion, Robert Hight, couldn’t quite keep up with Matt Hagan, who made a 3.823-second pass at 335.90 mph, taking the win in Funny Car. This marks Hagen’s 27th career win and second consecutive Winternationals victory.
Bo Butner looks to defend his Pro Stock title this season and did so with a win. Taking down teammate Jason Line, Butner ran a 6.549 at 209.62 mph in the final round.
A record was also broken in Pomona last weekend, when Top Fuel driver Clay Millican piloted his car to a 3.628-second pass at 322.04 mph, the quickest pass for a Top Fuel car.
