Canada has long been a draw for people from India's Punjab province seeking new opportunities elsewhere. But has the Canadian dream soured?
It's hard to miss the ardour of Punjab's migrant ambitions when driving through its fertile rural plains.
Billboards promising easy immigration to Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK jut out through ample mustard fields.
Off the highways, consultancies offer English language coaching to eager youth.
Single-storey brick homes double up as canvasses for hand-painted mural advertisements promising quick visas. And in the town of Bathinda, hundreds of agents jostle for space on a single narrow street, pledging to speed up the youth's runaway dreams.
For over a century, this province in India's northwest has seen waves of overseas migration; from the Sikh soldiers inducted into the British Indian Army travelling to Canada, through to rural Punjabis settling in England post-independence.
But some, especially from Canada, are now choosing to come back home.
One of those is 28-year-old Balkar, who returned in early 2023 after just one year in Toronto. Citizenship was his ultimate goal when he left his little hamlet of Pitho in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. His family mortgaged their land to fund his education.
But his Canadian dream quickly lost its allure a few months into his life there.
"Everything was so expensive. I had to work 50 hours every week after college, just to survive," he told the BBC. "High inflation is making many students leave their studies."
Balkar now runs an embroidery business from a small room on one side of the expansive central courtyard in his typical Punjabi home. He also helps on his family's farm to supplement his income.
Opportunities for employment are few and far between in these rural areas, but technology has allowed entrepreneurs like him to conquer the tyranny of distance. Balkar gets the bulk of his business through Instagram.
"I have a good life here. Why should I face hardships there when I can live at home and make good money?" he asks.
The BBC spoke to at least half a dozen reverse migrants in Punjab who shared similar sentiments.
It was also a common refrain in the scores of videos on YouTube shared by Indians who had chosen to abandon their life in Canada and return home. There was a stark difference one young returnee told the BBC between the "rosy picture" immigration agents painted and the rough reality of immigrant life in Toronto and Vancouver.
The "Canada craze" has let up a bit - and especially so among well-off migrants who have a fallback option at home, says Raj Karan Brar, an immigration agent in Bathinda who helps hundreds of Punjabis get permanent residencies and student visas every year.
The desire for a Canadian citizenship remains as strong as ever though among middle- and lower middle-class clients in rural communities.
But viral YouTube videos of students talking about the difficulty in finding jobs and protests over a lack of housing and work opportunities has created an air of nervousness among these students, say immigration agents.
There was a 40% decline in applications from India for Canadian study permits in the second half of 2023, according to one estimate. This was, in part, also due to the ongoing diplomatic tensions between India and Canada over allegations Indian agents were involved in the murder of Canadian Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
There are also hints of deeper cultural factors at play, for a waning Canadian dream among an older generation of Indian migrants.
Karan Aulakh, who spent nearly 15 years in Edmonton and achieved career and financial success, left his managerial job for a comfortable rural life in Khane ki Daab, the village where he was born in 1985. He told the BBC he was upset by LGBT-inclusive education policies in Canada and its 2018 decision to legalise recreational cannabis. Incompatibility with the Western way of life, a struggling healthcare system, and better economic prospects in India were, he said, key reasons why many older Canadian Indians are preparing to leave the country.
"I started an online consultancy - Back to the Motherland - a month and a half ago, to help those who want to reverse migrate. I get at least two to three calls every day, mostly from people in Canada who want to know what job opportunities there are in Punjab and how they can come back," said Mr Aulakh.
For a country that places such a high value on immigration, these trends are "concerning" and are "being received with a bit of a sting politically", says Daniel Bernhard of the Institute of Canadian Citizenship, an immigration advocacy group.
A liberalised immigration regime has been Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's signature policy to counter slowing economic growth and a rapidly aging population.
According to Canada's statistics agency, immigration accounted for 90% of Canada's labour force growth and 75% of population growth in 2021.
International students contribute to over C$20bn ($14.7bn; £11.7bn) to Canada's economy each year, a bulk of them Indians who now make up one in five recent immigrants to the country.
India was also Canada's leading source for immigration in 2022.
The numbers of those leaving are still small in absolute terms with immigration levels at all-time highs in Canada - the country welcomed nearly half a million new migrants each year over the past few years.
But the rate of reverse migration hit a two decade high in 2019, signalling that migrants were "losing confidence" in the country said Mr Bernhard.
Country specific statistics for such emigrants, or reverse migrants, are not available.
But official data obtained by Reuters shows between 80,000 and 90,000 immigrants left Canada in 2021 and 2022 and either went back to their countries, or onward elsewhere.
Some 42,000 people departed in the first half of 2023.
Fewer permanent residents are also going on to become Canadian citizens, according to census data cited by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship. In 2001, 75% of those eligible became citizens. Two decades later, it was 45%.
Canada needs to "restore the value of its citizenship," said Mr Bernhard.
It comes as Canada debates its aggressive immigration targets given country's struggle to absorb more people.
A recent report from National Bank of Canada economists cautioned that the population growth was putting pressure on its already tight housing supply and strained healthcare system.
Canada has seen a population surge - an increase of 1.2 million people in 2023 - driven mostly by newcomers.
The report argued that growth needed to be slowed to an annual increase of up to 500,000 people in order to preserve or increase the standard of living.
There appears to have been a tacit acceptance of this evaluation by policymakers.
Mr Trudeau's Liberal government recently introduced a cap on international student permits that would result in a temporary decrease of 35% in approved study visas.
It's a significant policy shift that some believe may end up further reducing Canada's appeal amid a wave of reverse migrations.

Lula Should Look to the Future, Not the Past
By focusing on interest rates and reindustrialization, Brazil’s president is missing out on the real opportunities facing his government.
Tumblr media
Throughout his nearly 100 days back in office, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and members of his government have focused above all on two economic messages. First, that Brazil needs to “reindustrialize.” Second, that the country’s interest rates are too high. But in doing so, Lula may be focusing too much on the past, and missing the opportunities that the country could seize today.
There’s no doubt that Brazil’s economy needs a boost. The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all countries globally, but emerging economies have been hit particularly hard. Brazil, having previously endured a significant recession after an institutional crisis in the mid-2010s, has now been in a state of stagnation for more than a decade. In addition to the lack of growth, there are signs that inequality has worsened in recent years, making the goal of achieving higher welfare levels for Brazilians even more challenging. Brazilian manufacturing has also suffered. Even before the pandemic, while global manufacturing grew by 10% since 2014, Brazil’s manufacturing contracted by 15%.
A lot of time has passed since Lula’s first government, from 2003-10, and the world is no longer the same. Back then, the euro had recently been launched, the world was grappling with the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, China’s import patterns were shifting, which was expected to boost commodity prices, social media was virtually non-existent, and Brazil had just won the World Cup for the fifth time. Yes, that is how long ago all this was.
Today, the locus of productivity has shifted, with manufacturing relocating to Asia and service industries outsourced to India. Furthermore, a fresh wave of services has emerged, concentrating on delivery and transportation, digital entertainment, health, and personal care. These changes have brought forth novel modes of working relationships, demanding from policymakers a reconsideration of economic policies that foster efficient social safety nets and spur productivity.
Entrepreneurs are increasingly focused on finding environmentally sustainable ways to produce goods and services. Meanwhile, scientists and environmentalists are engaged in debates about direct carbon capture and nuclear fusion as potential solutions to combat climate change. However, capital flows to emerging economies remain scarce, posing a significant challenge to their efforts to implement these new technologies and practices.
All these changes should spell opportunity for Brazil.

Billionaire Elon Musk’s purchase of and arrival at Twitter has turned the global social media company into a raging dumpster fire with significant consequences all around the world. The closest indication of any method behind the madness may be Musk’s Nov. 9 tweet: “Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. We will keep what works & change what doesn’t.” Even here, Musk may have been overpromising: Twitter’s offices are now temporarily shuttered following mass firings, reported mass resignations, an apparent exodus of advertisers, a new plague of fake accounts, and confusion over future content policies. Many people are horrified by the Musk mayhem, his longtime critics are having an “I told you so” moment, and those inclined to be generous are taking a cautious view of “too early to tell.” Some former employees fear the platform may only have a few weeks to live.
To save Twitter, however, the choice is unambiguous: Musk urgently needs to fire himself. This is not because his opening act has been so chaotic but for deeper structural reasons. If Twitter’s mission is to be, in Musk’s own words, “by far the most accurate source of information about the world,” the combination of Musk’s multiple conflicts of interest and Twitter’s international operations would conspire to kill that mission. For one, Twitter’s global footprint is already on shaky ground. Second, Musk’s own international entanglements make the problem much worse. Third, the business pressures bearing down on the platform will be Twitter’s final nail in the coffin under Musk.
Twitter has served many purposes worldwide. It’s been a megaphone for the world’s powerful, but it has also given power to the powerless: Cairo’s revolutionaries at Tahrir Square during the Arab Spring, desperate families searching for a hospital bed or oxygen tank during India’s second COVID-19 wave, and the #MeToo movement everywhere. Twitter has been a critical tool for crisis response during earthquakes, tsunamis, and other natural disasters.
This impressive breadth of use notwithstanding, Twitter covers large parts of the world where speech isn’t free. More than two-thirds of all Twitter users are outside the United States, contributing just under half of the company’s revenues. In only 7 of the top 20 countries ranked by the number of Twitter users is the internet labeled “free” by Freedom House (one country had no available data). The risk of manipulation and misinformation on Twitter was already high. With Musk’s arrival, that risk has risen to unacceptable levels given his other business interests.
Musk’s global business activities clearly jeopardize Twitter’s mission. One of his undeniable traits is his ability to attract funders from around the world. His Twitter acquisition was co-financed by entities with links to China, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia—three countries with a questionable track record of commitment to the information accuracy Musk says he seeks. The Qatar Investment Authority, for example, invested $375 million in Twitter. Qatar is set to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup and is battling criticism for human rights violations at construction sites, media censorship, and the curtailment of the rights of women and minorities. Leverage over Twitter would give Qatar access to a megaphone to reshape the narrative. Two other problematic funding sources for Musk’s Twitter acquisition are Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding Company and Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Al Saud, who are jointly the second-largest investor after Musk. Saudi Arabia, with the eighth-highest number of Twitter users, has one of the worst records on rights and freedom in the world.
This is just the start. Musk’s conflicts of interest multiply when you consider two of his other businesses: Tesla and SpaceX. Both are crucially dependent on repressive governments, and Musk already has a clear record of pandering to them.
Tesla, for one, cannot survive without its ties to China, the world’s largest electric vehicle market by far. The electric car company’s revenues there have doubled two years in a row. Tesla also has its largest vehicle assembly plant in Shanghai, built with a loan and special concessions from the Chinese government. Most of Tesla’s direct sources for its batteries are in China. This degree of dependence on a single country with an all-powerful state makes it impossible to trust that a Musk-led Twitter would disallow its manipulation for propaganda purposes. Although Twitter is blocked in China, its diplomats and operatives abroad are active on Twitter promoting favorable narratives. In fact, Chinese authorities have created hundreds of fake accounts, creating bot armies and surveillance systems to monitor and silence dissidents abroad.
Musk’s other prominent venture, SpaceX, is also critically reliant on problematic international connections. Consider Starlink, SpaceX’s network of satellites designed to deliver high-speed internet anywhere. The company plans to expand service to most of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East next year and needs permission from government gatekeepers. It has secured a license in Qatar and will be launching its services in Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates next year. The Oman Investment Authority has also made an undisclosed investment in SpaceX. The three countries rate poorly on freedoms. With leverage over Musk via SpaceX, they could gain leverage over Twitter.
Beyond Starlink, SpaceX is poised to be a major player in this growing market for space launches, part of a booming commercial space market projected to grow to more than $1 trillion by 2040. A large part of the demand—for everything from satellite launches to moon missions—will come from authoritarian and semi-democratic governments as well as private entities connected to them. All will have interests in propaganda and ways to burnish their global prestige.
There is plenty of evidence to suggest that Musk is easily influenced by foreign governments. China has made clear that it exerts power over Tesla, including by banning the cars from “sensitive areas” because the cars’ driver assist systems can allegedly be used for spying. State-controlled media could change their coverage of Tesla any time, with a corresponding effect on sales. Financial connections between Chinese entities and Tesla, not least the loan to build the Shanghai factory, also give Beijing enormous leverage. Musk’s response to all this has been to praise China. His eagerness to please Chinese authorities is evident, for example, in a recent tweet suggesting that Taiwan become a special administrative zone controlled by Beijing. Unsurprisingly, news of Musk’s acquisition of Twitter was quickly followed by Chinese (and Russian) propaganda mouthpieces previously banned from the platform urging Musk to allow them back.
Twitter’s own business pressures, made incomparably worse by the chaos he has unleashed, will be the final nail in the coffin of a Musk-run Twitter. As he attempts to make the platform profitable, he will severely jeopardize its mission, creating a vicious cycle where compromised trust could scare off users and advertisers—in turn requiring even more drastic attempts at monetization. Musk recently gutted Twitter’s contract workforce who moderate content—not exactly conducive to information accuracy and trust. Those “writing great code will constitute the majority of our team and have the greatest sway,” said an email to Twitter staff from Musk, which further indicates a low priority for content moderation. With staff rapidly thinning out, some countries where Twitter operates will be the squeaky wheels garnering the few resources that are left, whereas others are likely to be starved.
Trouble is, Twitter’s global operating environment has become much too complex for Musk’s capricious, Sun King style of management. The United States has historically had relatively few content moderation rules, but several U.S. states have passed laws, and there is a case against Twitter in the U.S. Supreme Court. Elsewhere, new laws in the European Union and Britain require the company to implement risk assessments, transparency reports, and data access. The EU’s Digital Services Act gives regulators tools to monitor content and demand its removal. The United States and Europe are substantial sources of advertising revenue, so the world can expect Musk to direct some of Twitter’s resources there. But elsewhere, moderation and compliance could soon look weak. U.S.-based corporate headquarters are generally notorious when it comes to adapting to non-U.S. conditions, and Musk’s management style will throw additional sand in the company’s gears.
There are others who will place demands. Musk’s arrival comes on the heels of a record number of Twitter content removal requests from foreign governments. Japan had the most requests, but the demands came from 44 countries. Except in China, Iran, Russia, North Korea, and a few other countries, Twitter is accessible from any internet connection. According to some reports, roughly 4,400 out of 5,500 contract workers have been fired. This means there will be large parts of the world—with hundreds of millions of users—where misinformation and manipulation will likely thrive. The burden will fall on poorer nations, with have plenty of vulnerable users but not enough advertisers to make these places a priority for Musk. Far from being the most accurate source of information, Twitter risks becoming the most effective tool to manipulate information in large parts of the world.
The conclusion is inescapable. If Musk’s plan was to keep what works and change what doesn’t, it’s become clear that what doesn’t work at Twitter is Musk himself. He should swallow his pride, take a loss, and sell the company to a better owner.

My NEET Journey
NEET, a medical entrance exam in India, hmm is it tough? Maybe, Is it competitive? Yes! There's a lot of competition in it, nearly 15-16 lakh students enroll each year and the number of seats there is 40-50 thousand, in each and every nook and corner we can find a Neet aspirant but someone who becomes an actual medico from being an aspirant is rare. I'm one of those aspirants too, an NEET 2022 aspirant.
Today : 17-06-2022,
1 month prior to NEET 2022. All emotions are running in me, the happiness if I would get selected and the emotional damage I'd have to face if I didn't. Sometimes feeling that I wouldn't have to go through these if I hadn't spent my past 2 years in vain. 2020, I had passed my 10th ICSE exams, well even though we wrote the exam we were labeled as " THE CORONA BATCH " lol. well now, my 11th was online and it's obvious if it's online there would be cheating. And my fate I did that too, and then 2021 again another lockdown, I felt, "Did our life seem like a joke to covid? " well I guess everyone's life did seem like a joke to it, nevermind. I tried to focus on my backlogs and my 12th and the cheating tempted me again, and neither did I clear my backlogs nor did I focus on my 12th. In September 2021, our government announced that they would conduct our First-year exams, there's it, had to put my NEET books aside and focus on my first-year public exams, well maybe my luck I did pass them with a good percentile. November, our NEET schedule began again, I lived in a boarding school, hmmm did I study well there? No :( I couldn't even grasp a single thing they taught, I wasted my 2 months there, doing nothing but staring at the blank space while they taught. January 2022, corona third wave, well it wasn't that long, thankfully but soon it was about to end when our government said they'd conduct our second-year exams. In February, we had practicals, March, our college started our NEET revision, and honestly I regret for not concentrating then, March passed, April arrived, Our public exams were in May and we started preparing for them, NEET aside for one month more.
On May 23rd, the short-term batch for NEET began, I know I wouldn't study there but the devil called and had to go, there wasn't a single day where I didn't cry in the washroom regretting my decision and not raising my voice that I cannot concentrate here. On June 10th after a lot of struggle, I got out of that hell, came home, and started studying. Now I'm here, one more month to go, still completing my syllabus, and giving some tests, in a hope that something magical would happen in the end if I pour my whole blood sweat, and tears. I'll wait for it.

A New High for the Indian Whiskies & Spirits Industry
A few years back, if you were offered an Indian whisky, at anyone`s residence, you may have felt offended, since the basic standard was a single malt or a premium blended whisky. Over the years things have changed quite interestingly & today Indian whiskies are not just being sought after but also being served with pride. Lot of new Brands have entered the mainstream Indian whisky market post the launch of the “First” global Indian whisky, Amrut in Glasgow in 2004.The response to Indian Single Malts has been very encouraging and the acceptance level by consumers across the world has been great.   Specially the malt connoisseurs, who are willing to experiment and try out the new world single malts.  “This augurs well not only for Indian Single Malts but also all new world whiskies. The world has taken notice of what is happening in the whisky world outside of Scotland and keen to support great quality malts that are being produced.  The standard Indian Whiskies (IMFL) continue to grow in traditional markets like Middle East and Africa.  We do hope that UK, EU and Australia will soon lift the non-tariff barriers on Indian Whiskies and give a big boost to exports of Indian Whiskies” avers, Sanjeev Banga, President – International Business Radico Khaitan Ltd.
India’s whisky Industry has been growing for over a decade, though in the last three years, the rise of Indian whisky brands has brought much recognition to the Indian whisky market. Indri Indian Single Malt Whisky has already bagged prestigious awards like International Spirits Challenge 2022 and is the only Indian Single malt to win a Gold Medal in the World Whisky category Single malt – no age statement category 2022.
According to Thiruvikram Nikam, JMD at Amrut Industries, “In the last few years there has been a constant increase of interest for Indian Whisky. We at Amrut are exceeding the demand expectations which can be considered a good response for Indian Whisky. To add to this, we are present in 55 countries and the response has been very encouraging. India`s huge demographic spread, coupled with exposure to various types of spirits, has led to increase in sales across different segments of spirits. In context to the improvement in sales of premium whiskies, in the last few years we have seen a very active interaction between the brand and consumers thereby increasing brand awareness, quality and so on. Social Media marketing has also played a major role in bringing the consumers to the brands”.  As they say, change is the only permanent thing. In that light, consumers trends and preferences keep evolving. Currently, there is a trend where the consumer is willing to try and appreciate a variety of spirits, including a surge in Indian Gins. One also senses a Rum boom in the coming years, with of course premium whiskies continuing to do better and dominating the figures. A good growth for Indian whiskies, not only in India but across the globe, is possible provided Indian Spirits maintain a good standard and disciple in manufacturing the produce.
“Despite the global pandemic and changing economic scenarios in the last three years, the Indian Spirits market has seen growth in its consumption. Due to the second wave, the alcohol Industry took a significant hit in the pandemic itself, but the government regulations on taxes helped drive sales still. We at Indri have seen that lot of people are experimenting with Premium Indian Single Malts in the past 2 years. The critical word here is an experiment. The Indian liquor industry has changed over the last three to four years. As demand for high-quality goods has increased, the Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated the trend, particularly in metropolitan areas. The dynamics, on the other hand, have changed. The changing drinking habits of the younger generation and the rising liquor industry in the Indian subcontinent have resulted in a significant shift in how individuals use alcohol.”, according to Praveen Malviya, President Piccadily Agro Industries Ltd.
Despite the pandemic and related restrictions, Indian beverage alcohol industry has also performed well in the last 3 years, in the domestic Industry.  It is heartening to note that the state governments have realized the significance of revenue generated by this industry and they are taking pragmatic steps to not only improve their revenue collections further but also to create a better environment for the industry as well as related players be it Retail, On Trade and Hospitality industry to function more efficiently and effectively. Premium and luxury category are growing at the fastest pace.  There are challenges due to global logistical issue on sourcing of some of the packaging material but hopefully things should settle down soon.
“During the pandemic, there was a drop in Spirit markets however certain segments showed remarkable resilience and growth despite the closure. Categories such as premium Whisky, Scotch Whisky bottled in India, Single Malts, etc continued to grow and have been leading in the recovery back to pre-pandemic volumes, while the overall spirits market declined in terms of volume growth. In India, rising affluence of Indian middle class with rising aspirations levels & increasing disposable income, the urban Indian consumer is seen to be globally aware and treats alcoholic beverages as any other beverage category, this leads to growing experimentation and thereby to the growth of premium whisky. Also this is the category where price laddering is available for the consumer to choose from for every occasion which allows for more experimentation.” According to Paul John, Chairman, John Distillery.
In recent times, India has become a game changer in Alcobev segment. Spirits like gin, vodka, rum, whisky (single malts and blended) and Indian agave have emerged as a strong portfolio, competing in the international market. Indian spirits are also been recognised globally. Though India is still a whisky market, in recent times good scope of Gin and Rum has ben witnessed. With new bartending schools in India, we also see a major shift in the bartending community who give an experience to customers with fresh flavours of Indian spirits.  With high engagement on social media, there is a faster knowledge transfer on methods or etiquette of drinking a particular spirit. Retailers are trending with new customer experience at the stores.
So where will we see significant growth in the Indian market, reaffirms Sanjeev Banga, “Innovation and experimentation will remain the key drivers of growth.  Whilst Indian Single Malts have a unique opportunity to showcase what India can offer to the world, at the same time we feel there are lot of local / regional spirit drinks that need to be brought forward and shared with the world.  Staying at home during the pandemic made lot of us experts in making cocktails, so DIY and premixes should also see growth in near future.”
Consumer trends too are changing & evolving In India. Drinking at home during the pandemic unshackled the taboo surrounding alcohol consumption in India.  Indians are drinking less but better. They no longer drink to get drunk but to enjoy the moment / occasion / togetherness. Also, Indians are well aware of the global trends and classic case is growing acceptance of Gin.  A category that was nonexistence till a few years ago is seeing lot of consumer interest and newer brands being launched at regular interval.  Following the global trends, we see Luxury Rum and Agave based spirits the next big thing.
Premium and luxury category are also growing at the fastest pace.  There are challenges due to global logistical issue on sourcing of some of the packaging material but hopefully things should settle down soon. Innovation and experimentation will remain the key drivers of growth.  Whilst Indian Single Malts have a unique opportunity to showcase what India can offer to the world, at the same time we feel there are lot of local / regional spirit drinks that need to be brought forward and shared with the world. Indians are drinking less but better. Following the global trends, one sees Luxury Rum and Agave based spirits the next big thing.
Ruchika Gupta, Marketing Director, Beam Suntory India – “We founded Oaksmith on some very solid foundations and Japanese principles of Gemba (or deep consumer insights) and monozukuri, our high quality techniques around purity, precision and process. It’s a blend by one of the finest in the blending world, gentleman behind iconic brands like Yamazaki Japanese Single Malt and Hibiki Japanese Blended – Shinji Fukuyo, from Suntory, epitomizing impeccable Japanese craftsmanship. Innovation seeped into everything we do for this brand, Oaksmith has rapidly expanded to almost all state markets. It’s been nothing short of a remarkable journey for Oaksmith to have gained consumer and industry recognition in such a short while. It strives to keep elevating the category as it moves forward.”
Today’s youth are seen to mature early, have more disposable incomes and different needs which have given rise to various consumption occasions. Awareness has increased, and experimentation & exploration have led to craft spirits and cocktails being the new trends. Riding the “ Premiumisation “wave, everyone is opting to go up the price ladder to find products better suited to their tastes. Also digital revolution has given brands a presence across social media as well. Craft Spirits, small batch, Single Malts especially with special finishes, Barrel Aged Rum & and Gins etc are the current flavours of the market and will definitely grow in next 3-5 years.
According to Jai Prakash Chopra, Co-founder of Spaceman Spirits Lab, which owns the Brand Samsara Gin, “I would say all categories have a bright future. There is innovation in every segment. But gin is picking up tremendously. We can see the sudden emerge of new Indian Gins and are doing well overseas too. It`s to early to comment on UK India FTA, but it is good to see many opportunities for both the countries for tie ups, ease of doing business and knowledge transfer. Maybe, this would equip us better to step up the product Outlook through innovative measures.  There is a lot of scope for Indian spirits as Indian consumers are not yet aware of the variety of spirits in international trade. With continuous tie ups with local international brands and innovations in packaging, India is an emerging marketplace.”
Indian single malt exports have grown at an average of 25% over the last 3 years and the biggest growth is seen from countries like USA, France, UK, Australia, UAE, Canada, Japan, as well as in Duty Free. New markets like Russia, Israel and Turkey are expected to see a healthy growth in the next few years.
The Indian spirits brands have been on a steady growth across the country and also across different price categories. Though with the FTA, it seems too early to comment in absence of complete information but if there is a drastic reduction in the duties, it may impact the sale of Indian produce, which may adversely affect all the stakeholders within the Indian spirit ecosystem.
UK is one of the biggest markets for Indian single malt brands. Exports to UK have been consistently growing at the rate of more than 10%. In India however the impact of UK India FTA will create challenges for Indian whiskies producers, especially premium Malt Whisky producers. The challenges are not due to quality, as Indian Whiskies are today at par with the best in the world, but rather due to the taxation in favour of imported brands. Beyond the state laws, there also remains the challenge of competing with Imported brands that can advertise globally and also reach Indian consumers online.
Over the last few years, there has been an engaging interaction between Brands & Consumers. Social Media marketing has also played a major role in bringing the consumers to the brands. Indian spirits have also been gaining global recognition primarily due to exceptionally good quality. Indian manufacturers have evolved to produce truly world class whiskies & Spirits and Indian consumers are also slowly accepting this and trying domestic spirits. The wide range of spirits that Indian manufacturers have created have convinced the world on the quality of Indian spirits. The category  has gained the confidence of the consumer and we expect this growth to continue and accelerate over the next few years as well.

In a modern democracy, any citizen would expect some level of say in matters of importance, at least those that apply to them. This did not seem to be the case with ‌Indian farmers’ protests in 2020 when COVID-19 was ravaging the world. The second wave of the pandemic was going on in India, and an unpopular, stultifying lockdown was in place.

Drought Touches a Quarter of Humanity, U.N. Says, Disrupting Lives Globally (NYT) Pandemic. War. Now drought. Olive groves have shriveled in Tunisia. The Brazilian Amazon faces its driest season in a century. Wheat fields have been decimated in Syria and Iraq, pushing millions more into hunger after years of conflict. The Panama Canal, a vital trade artery, doesn’t have enough water, which means fewer ships can pass through. And the fear of drought has prompted India, the world’s biggest rice exporter, to restrict the export of most rice varieties. The United Nations estimates that 1.84 billion people worldwide, or nearly a quarter of humanity, were living under drought in 2022 and 2023, the vast majority in low- and middle-income countries. “Droughts operate in silence, often going unnoticed and failing to provoke an immediate public and political response,” wrote Ibrahim Thiaw, head of the United Nations agency that issued the estimates late last year, in his foreword to the report.
US pastors struggle with post-pandemic burnout (AP) Post-pandemic burnout is at worrying levels among Christian clergy in the U.S., prompting many to think about abandoning their jobs, according to a new nationwide survey. More than 4 in 10 of clergy surveyed in fall 2023 had seriously considered leaving their congregations at least once since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, and more than half had thought seriously of leaving the ministry, according to the survey released Thursday by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research. About a tenth of clergy report having had these thoughts often, according to the survey, conducted as part of the institute’s research project, Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations. The high rates of ministers considering quitting reflects the “collective trauma” that both clergy and congregants have experienced since 2020, said institute director Scott Thumma, principal investigator for the project.
Winter weather (AP) cy winter weather blanketed the U.S. on Saturday as a wave of Arctic storms threatened to break low-temperature records in the heartland, spread cold and snow from coast to coast and cast a chill over everything from football playoffs to presidential campaigns. As the three-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday weekend began, the weather forecast was a crazy quilt of color-coded advisories, from an ice storm warning in Oregon to a blizzard warning in the northern Plains to high wind warnings in New Mexico. Governors from New York to Louisiana warned residents to be prepared for worrisome weather. Parts of Montana fell below minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 34 degrees Celsius) Saturday morning, and the National Weather Service said similar temperatures were expected as far as northern Kansas, with minus 50 F (minus 46 C) possible in the Dakotas. In other places, if the problem wasn’t snow and wind, it was water: Record high tides hit the Northeast, flooding some homes in Maine and New Hampshire.
Guatemalans hope for a peaceful transition of power with Bernardo Arévalo’s upcoming inauguration (AP) Guatemalan President-elect Bernardo Arévalo’s imminent inauguration and the unrelenting pursuit of him and his party by the attorney general are recurring topics over dinner tables in this country, reflecting a political awakening in a population weary of corruption and impunity. Despite Arévalo’s wide margin of victory in elections certified by Guatemalan authorities and declared fair by international observers, he has been a target of prosecutors since his surprise second-place showing in June’s first round of voting. His anti-corruption stance and outsider status are threats to deep-rooted interests in the Central American country, observers say. That Arévalo has made it to within a day of his inauguration is largely owed to thousands of Guatemala’s Indigenous peoples who took to the streets last year to protest and demand that Attorney General Consuelo Porras and her prosecutors respect the Aug. 20 vote.
In Ecuador, the global reach of Mexico’s warring drug cartels fuels a national crisis (AP) Mexico’s two main drug cartels have long taken their deadly rivalry with them as they expand into distant markets from Asia to Australia to Africa, but never before with such intensive street gang violence and a presidential declaration of a state of “internal armed conflict” this week in Ecuador. Why are Mexican cartels in Ecuador? It’s the location. And the bananas. Ecuador is attractive as a shipping point for drugs because the South American country is sandwiched between two top cocaine producers, Colombia and Peru. Ecuador has been ravished by poverty, the COVID-19 pandemic, a weak law enforcement system and corruption, but it also has a big active, legitimate foreign trade. Ships sail to ports in the U.S. and Europe with huge containers of bananas—Ecuador is the world’s top exporter—and those are good places to hide cocaine. In a few short years, experts say, the experience and muscle of the Mexican cartels has turned Ecuador into the shipment point for almost one-third of the cocaine entering Europe.
Lost Cities Revealed (BBC) Archaeologists have discovered a constellation of ancient Amazonian structures in what is now modern-day Ecuador, according to new research published yesterday. Flourishing for roughly 1,000 years about two millennia ago, the settlements are believed to have been populated by 30,000 residents at their peak—roughly equal to London under the Roman Empire at the same time. The complex was discovered using LiDAR (light detection and ranging), a technique in which variations in surface height are measured using airborne laser mapping. The approach allows researchers to penetrate dense forest canopies or layers of Earth, revealing what lies underneath without labor-intensive fieldwork and digs.
UK economy at risk of recession despite November growth (Reuters) Britain’s economy grew slightly more strongly than expected in November but remains at risk of slipping into a mild recession, a potential blow for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak before an election expected in 2024. Britain’s economy struggled to gain momentum in 2023, as households were squeezed by rapid inflation and the highest BoE interest rates in 15 years. Much of Europe’s economy is weak too, due partly to the after-effects of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Germany’s economy shrank in the third quarter, and data on Tuesday showing an unexpectedly big drop in industrial output in November raised recession fears in Europe’s largest economy.
Taiwan voters choose their next president (AP) Ruling-party candidate Lai Ching-te emerged victorious in Taiwan’s presidential election on Saturday and his opponents conceded, a result that will determine the trajectory of the self-ruled democracy’s relations with China over the next four years. China had called the poll a choice between war and peace. Beijing strongly opposes Lai, the current vice president who abandoned his medical career to pursue politics from the grassroots to the presidency. While domestic issues such as the sluggish economy and expensive housing also featured prominently in the campaign, Lai's Democratic Progressive Party's appeal to self-determination, social justice and rejection of China's threats ultimately won out. It is the first time a single party has led Taiwan for three consecutive four-year presidential terms since the first open presidential elections in 1996.
Looming Starvation in Gaza Shows Resurgence of Civilian Sieges in Warfare (NYT) The number of people facing possible starvation in the Gaza Strip in the coming weeks is the largest share of a population at risk of famine identified anywhere since a United Nations-affiliated panel created the current global food-insecurity assessment 20 years ago. After Hamas’s surprise attack on Israel on Oct. 7, Israel responded with air and ground assaults and a sealing of the territory, which have left the 2.2 million people who live there deprived of sufficient food, water and supplies. The U.N. has concluded that without significant intervention, Gaza could reach the level of famine as soon as early February. Scholars of famine say it has been generations since the world has seen this degree of food deprivation in warfare. “The rigor, scale and speed of the destruction of the structures necessary for survival, and enforcement of the siege, surpasses any other case of man-made famine in the last 75 years,” said Alex de Waal, an expert on humanitarian crises and international law at Tufts University. Mass death from starvation declined steadily from the 1980s well into the 21st century. But over the past seven years, food crises associated with conflict (such as those in Yemen, Syria and the Tigray region of Ethiopia) and those stemming from environmental conditions and climate change (such as in Somalia) have resulted in the loss of more than a million lives.
Netanyahu says Israel will cut Gaza off from Egypt, taking control of Palestinian enclave’s remaining border (CNN) The border between Egypt and Gaza “must” be closed, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday—a move that would give Israel complete control over the Palestinian enclave’s access to the world. During a press briefing, Netanyahu said that Israel would not consider the war finished until it closes the Philadelphi Corridor, a 14km strip of land that serves as a buffer zone on the border between Egypt and Gaza. Egypt has previously warned Israel against military operations in the corridor, according to Egypt’s Ahram Online. The state-run news outlet, citing an unnamed source, reported in October that any Israeli incursion into the Philadelphi Corridor would be seen as a violation of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty of 1979.
U.S. Strikes Against Houthis in Yemen for Second Day, as Conflict Escalates (NYT) The United States carried out another strike against the Houthi militia in Yemen, the U.S. Central Command said on Friday night, bombing a radar facility as part of an effort to further degrade the Iran-backed group’s ability to attack ships transiting the Red Sea. It was the second straight day that the U.S. military fired on a Houthi target, after an American-led barrage of military strikes early Friday local time that was aimed at securing critical shipping routes between Europe and Asia. The strikes come amid fears of a wider escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.
Nigerian group provides hundreds of prosthetic limbs to amputee children thanks to crowdfunding (AP) The accident that broke 10-year-old Princess Igbinosa’s right leg could have crushed her dreams of becoming a model in a country where not many can afford prosthetics to cope with life and fight social stigma. “It was heartbreaking when they told us they had to amputate it (the leg),” her mother, Esther Igbinosa, said of Princess’s experience in 2020. “During the first few months of her amputation … I just wake up and start crying. I was like, how is she going to cope with life with an amputated leg?” But Princess can now walk and her dreams are alive again, thanks to an artificial leg that matches the tone of her skin. The prosthesis came from the IREDE Foundation, a Nigerian group that provides children like her with free artificial limbs that normally cost $2,000 to $3,000. Founded in 2012 in Nigeria’s economic hub of Lagos, IREDE has provided more than 500 artificial limbs at no cost in addition to psychosocial support to children like Princess, said its executive director, Crystal Chigbu. She said the group gets up to 70% of its funding from crowdsourcing.

Factors such as world financial conditions, geopolitical tensions, and the strength of the Indian rupee towards the US greenback all play a task in influencing the value of gold. In addition, demand and provide dynamics, both globally and domestically, contribute to the volatility of gold costs.
Factors Influencing Gold Prices in 2024
Global Economic Conditions: The world economy has a direct influence on the price of gold. Traditionally, gold is considered a safe-haven asset, and its demand tends to rise in times of economic uncertainty. Factors corresponding to inflation, interest rates, and geopolitical tensions can affect investor sentiment, driving them in the direction of or away from gold.
Central Bank Policies: The insurance policies of major central banks, particularly those of the United States Federal Reserve, play a major position in shaping gold prices. Decisions associated to interest rates, monetary policy, and quantitative easing can impact the strength of the US dollar, which, in turn, impacts the price of gold.
Geopolitical Tensions: Geopolitical occasions, similar to conflicts, commerce tensions, and political instability, have historically led to increased demand for gold. Investors usually turn to gold as a safe-haven asset during instances of uncertainty, which can drive up its value.
Inflation and Deflation Concerns: Gold is usually seen as a hedge against inflation. When inflationary pressures rise, buyers could allocate extra of their portfolios to gold to preserve wealth. Conversely, throughout deflationary intervals, the demand for gold might lower. Monitoring inflation and deflation indicators is essential for understanding potential shifts in gold costs.
Currency Strength: The power of the Indian rupee towards major currencies, particularly the US dollar, has a direct impression on the value of gold within the Indian market. A weaker rupee relative to the dollar can lead to greater gold prices for Indian customers.
Gold Demand in India: The demand for gold inside India, driven by cultural and religious components, is a key determinant of local gold prices. Events such as festivals and weddings usually witness increased gold purchases, influencing the general demand-supply dynamics within the country.

If the restoration is robust, it might result in reduced demand for safe-haven belongings like gold, potentially placing downward stress on costs.
Interest Rate Movements: Changes in rates of interest, especially in main economies, can impression the chance cost of holding gold. If rates of interest rise, some traders may shift their assets to interest-bearing instruments, probably resulting in lower demand for gold.
Inflation Outlook: The inflation outlook for 2024 shall be a key factor influencing gold prices. If inflationary pressures persist or rise, gold could proceed to be seen as a hedge against inflation, supporting its demand and doubtlessly driving costs greater.
Currency Exchange Rates: The motion of the Indian rupee against the US dollar and other major currencies shall be a crucial issue for gold costs in India. A stronger rupee could help mitigate a few of the upward pressure on gold costs, whereas a weaker rupee could contribute to greater domestic costs.
Global Trade and Geopolitical Developments: Ongoing geopolitical tensions, commerce disputes, and other international uncertainties will continue to impact investor sentiment and influence the demand for safe-haven assets like gold. Any surprising geopolitical occasions might lead to sudden fluctuations in gold prices.
Consumer Demand in India: The domestic demand for gold in India stays a big factor. Cultural events, festivals, and the wedding season traditionally drive greater gold consumption. Any shifts in client sentiment or adjustments in purchasing patterns may influence the general demand for gold in the country.
Conclusion
As we navigate by way of 2024, the gold market in India will be formed by a posh interplay of global economic forces, geopolitical occasions, and domestic demand. Powering Economies: A Deep Dive into the Global Petroleum Products Market
Petroleum products, unlike petrochemicals, are a diverse range of materials derived from crude oil through the refining process. These products are complex mixtures with various applications. The majority of crude oil is processed into petroleum products, including different classes of fuels. The composition of crude oil and market demands determine the specific petroleum products produced by refineries, with the primary focus on various grades of fuel oil and gasoline.
𝐑𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐒𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐏𝐃𝐅 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐞 : https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/request-toc-and-sample/15241
COVID-19 Impact Analysis:
The COVID-19 pandemic had a significant adverse impact on the petroleum products market. The reduced consumption of refined petroleum products and economic slowdown across major nations worldwide were key factors. The pandemic, combined with volatile crude oil prices, resulted in delays for numerous refinery projects globally. Many companies had to reorganize their operations and recover from the COVID-19 impact, which initially led to restrictions such as social distancing, remote work, and the closure of commercial activities. These restrictions presented operational challenges. Moreover, slow vaccination rollouts and high infection rates in countries like Brazil and India have impacted demand in high-growth oil markets.
Top Impacting Factors:
The refined petroleum products market involves entities that convert crude petroleum into products like gasoline, naphtha, diesel fuel, and liquefied petroleum gas, subsequently selling these products. Petroleum refineries are complex industrial facilities with extensive pipeline networks for transporting crude oil and refined products. The second wave of COVID-19 and resulting lockdowns, particularly in South Asian countries in March and April, had a substantial impact on the market. Further restrictions in May continued to affect oil demand in Asia.
𝐄𝐧𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐮𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 : https://www.alliedmarketresearch.com/purchase-enquiry/15241
Market Trends:
Notably, refineries are increasingly adopting carbon capture and storage techniques to reduce CO2 emissions. This approach involves capturing CO2 at its source and transporting it to monitored storage locations, effectively reducing emissions. While crude oil prices receive considerable media attention, consumers purchase various petroleum products derived from crude oil for a wide range of applications. Some products, such as gasoline, are highly visible to consumers, while others are less so.
The demand for refined petroleum products is driven by the increasing need for electricity and a growing population. Capacity expansion in existing refineries and the establishment of new petroleum refineries (brownfields and greenfields) are expected to be the primary factors fueling market demand during the forecast period.
Key Benefits of the Report:
This report provides an analytical overview of the petroleum products industry, including current trends and future projections for potential investment opportunities. It covers key drivers, restraints, opportunities, and market share analysis. The report quantitatively analyzes the current market growth scenario and employs Porter's five forces analysis to illustrate buyer and supplier dynamics in the market. Additionally, it offers a detailed analysis of competitive intensity and how market competition is likely to evolve in the coming years.

Is this the best UNICEF can do?
"That David Beckham was in our Bollywood king's house yesterday," said a young man to another, both randomly browsing some social media platform on their respective phones, standing close to me on a crowded train running past acres of farmland, poorly illuminated shanties, unmaintained roads with potholes, and a landfill to reach a village.
"Don't waste your time reading about them!" commented an angry elderly voice from the crowd, responding to the young man, on the train. "For those ultra-rich losers to exist, we have to remain in poverty. They know that too well." Then the other passengers slowly joined in on the conversation that soon turned political.
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused several working class people to see through the glitz of the country's gluttonous billionaires and multimillionaires – some of whom happen to be high-profile Bollywood actors earlier treasured as the nation's "superstars". The poor were left at the mercy of complete strangers – vulnerable COVID-19 volunteers battling against time to make arrangements for uncountable patients' immediate needs – during the trying hours of the pandemic's first and second waves as a number of "celebrities" kept flocking off abroad. When wealthy veteran professionals of the entertainment industry, along with business tycoons and other moneyed individuals, donated to an opaque charitable fund (the public has no idea about what may have happened to that fund), created by the nation's government following the pandemic, that would also generously reward the donors with tax deductions, the majority were steamrolling under loss of income, crippled healthcare services, and corruption as the indomitable COVID-19 ravaged the country. Innumerable common people, many of them with breathing difficulties, requiring urgent medical attention queued for hours outside overcrowded hospitals while a privileged person with mild COVID-19 symptoms could be hospitalized "as a matter of abundant precaution".
The appointment of different globally celebrated personalities as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador has always remained controversial. Elitism is glorified when someone with a net worth of millions visits a third world country to "help focus worldwide attention on the work of the United Nations". Beckham's latest trip to India was nothing but a parade of the A-listers' sense of entitlement. The Indian mainstream news sites have outdone each other to inform the public about Beckham partying with the prosperous families that run the Bollywood film industry (and influence India's politics) today, his meeting with the few opulent Indian cricketers, the cuisine he savoured, and his sugar-coated words for India and its elites who had hosted him at their respective places. His brief interaction with the Indian youth and families receiving help through programmes supported by the UNICEF can be found on social media by those who really want to know the purpose of his sudden presence in India. However, the unmistakable widening economic inequalities has bolstered the growth of a socially aware class (one has to mingle with human beings at various economic levels of the Indian society to know them) that can't stand the existence of the wealth hoarders, let alone show any interest in their affairs.
