Your Words Matter
Dear Therapists,
I had just logged into a Zoom session for my Diagnosing Pathology class and my cohort was in deep discussion with one particular student as we all waited for our professor. This student in particular was already working in some sort of clinical setting, not yet giving therapy, but a new client profile had come across her desk with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. She didn’t know much about the diagnosis herself, but she was concerned because her boss said, “Whoa, good luck with that one. Borderlines are very difficult to work with.”
Difficult. It’s not the first time I’ve heard that word. Every time I hear a professional utter the word, “difficult” when referencing a client it stings. Is that how you really see us? As patients/clients that are stuck in a downward spiral whose struggles are too much for you to handle? Don’t you believe in what you do and that there is hope for us?
My heart breaks for whoever this person is that has borderline personality disorder because the cards have been stacked against them before they’ve even gotten started. One of my school assignments required me to write about working with a difficult population and this was my response:
“If we get the idea that a particular diagnosis or population is difficult to work with it feels like we are setting ourselves up for failure. Maybe we will treat them differently or have lower expectations or refuse to work with them because we have a negative perception.”
In 2022, I attended the Healing Together conference hosted by An Infinite Mind in Orlando, Florida. I was sitting in a session where I could hear and learn about lived experiences with dissociation and an excerpt from a book was read aloud as an example of how some clinicians view dissociative identity disorder. The presenter who read the excerpt was sad, the audience was sad, and I felt infuriated. The gist of the excerpt talked about how a clinician should be wary because clients with dissociative identity disorder are difficult to work with and that they bring unsolvable problems to therapy.
Unsolvable problems? Listen, if a client’s problem was easy to solve, they wouldn’t need therapy! Of course we are bringing our unsolvable problems to you. We believe in your ability to help us. We were trusting you enough to share our struggles. When we hear you call us difficult, challenging, resistant, and a myriad of other words, you break our trust and confidence.
My ask of you is that you reframe your perspective of difficult clients. My therapist always says that behavior is communication, so when you find a client’s behavior particularly difficult, ask yourself, “What is my client trying to tell me?” “What does my client need right now?” Seek out peer consultation or supervision without passing judgment on how difficult a client is for you.
I’ve always carried around my own judgment about myself as a client in therapy. I used to tell my therapist, “Thank you for putting up with me” and her response was, “There’s nothing to put up with.” When I had the opportunity to watch her present at a conference once, I went up to her just before it started to tell her she’d do a great job. She just smiled and said, “Everything I’m presenting today, I learned from you.” I thought about that for a long time. Not once, in our years of therapy had she ever shown any indication of frustration, feeling challenged, or felt I was difficult. She simply adapted her interventions as needed.
The NICABM posted back on June 11, 2022 on their Facebook page a quote from Pat Ogden, PhD; “When we call clients resistant or difficult, it’s because our interventions are not working and we feel incompetent.” As clients, we don’t think you’re incompetent. We think there’s something wrong with us and we believe you when we hear you say we’re difficult. So, please, choose carefully. Your words matter.
Sincerely,
A DID Client

“The more you ruminate on negative thoughts, the more power you give them. Most of our negative thoughts are just that — thoughts, not facts. When it feels like something always or never happens, this is just your brain’s natural tendency to perceive threats (inflating the frequency or severity of an event). Emotionally intelligent people separate their thoughts from the facts in order to escape the cycle of negativity and move toward a positive, new outlook.”

also regis swearing at stygga is so meaningful to me because he swore over milva’s dead body and also in front of angoulême (and assumedly cahir too)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tumblr media
#txt#especially because milva was like… not only his friend but he cared for her medically…#i mean he did for everyone (including cahir and dandelion’s head injuries) but#idk regis seeing her dead when he had saved her life under the bridge and counselled her about pregnancy and abortion#and (i guess it’s headcanon but) when her ribs were broken by the druids and she was healing from that he was there for her#milva was beat up by the narrative but regis was always there with bandages lol#so to see her DEAD completely DEAD with no possibility of healing her#also because *he was off* and he paused for a drink (or two—who knows how many)#of course he’s like ‘fuck this place. i’m going to fuck this shit up’ because how shitty of a surgeon must he feel right now#and if he can’t protect his friends now with medicine well the only other option in his arsenal is Fucking Shit Up#his NOSEDIVE begins early in the halls of stygga castle and he just starts losing it#milva: dies | me: oh… oh they’re *all* gonna die huh…#who knows if regis had returned to the rest of the company and milva was still alive. who knows. maybe he wouldn’t have continued to drink#and maybe he wouldn’t have made that suicidal leap towards vilgefortz in the end#i think that in the loss of the rest of the company regis had nothing left to live for#both from an in-universe POV and from a narrative writing POV#because remember that there were previously written versions in which regis survived and lived#so paying attention to not just when he dies but when he starts to go on this downward trajectory is relevant#because sapkowski intentionally devised a way in which he would die that would be plausible for his character#which means that his death isn’t just random. this version was a specially crafted version to ‘allow’ for his death#i love how AS was like well yeah of course milva and cahir are going to die. but yeah i admit angouleme and regis are just stupid#(to clarify he said angouleme dies stupidly)#but i think saying ‘there were other versions in which the vampire survived’ = this is the version where he is stupid#c: regis#analysis#IN THE TAGS lol#book: lady of the lake

daily notes, post-counseling - March 13, 2024
Omfg, my counseling session was so flipping good. I feel so proud of all the things I've been working through on my own, between sessions.
As we were talking, my counselor pulled up my treatment plan. To paraphrase, she said, "Oh this thing, and this thing, and this thing. All these goals you had set for yourself, you are already meeting on your own. You are already tackling it with eagerness. You have made so much progress and come so far." All this was happening even before my phone-friend and I got back in contact, and they've just amped up the pace at which I am ready to tackle things.
She agreed with my "ah-ha" moment of how "even the good times still feel painful" and my waking-limb analogy. (I always feel super smart when she likes my analogies.) She also said it's okay if I need more support, because these are uncharted waters, feeling all these new things. (We're doing every 3 weeks now, instead of 2.)
So excuse me while I sob over here, so happy and ecstatic and proud of myself. Like I've said, my emotions feel really strong lately; I can't regulate as well as I normally do.
Right before we got off the phone, my counselor was like, "Ahhhh!" in excitement. And I said, "You took the words right out of my mouth. You speak my language!" I expressed my gratitude to her, that she could give me the skill-set and support to get to this point.
It's not that she pushed me or dragged me along. She guided me, helped me navigate and translate, but I was the one who ultimately made the journey. She's helped me find the momentum to keep progress developing on my own - as shown with all that's happened between sessions lately.

in all honestly a resolution in ahsoka and obi wan’s relationship would be nothing but tragedy. meeting after order 66 wouldn’t go…well. there is immediate relief to see that the other is alive. just as quickly, there is guilt. obi wan’s guilt. he cannot bring himself to tell her that he is anakin’s killer. ahsoka sees obi wan’s depression. he looks hopeless and lost. the mentor she knew is gone forever. she sees the guilt in his eyes thinking it’s because he couldn’t save anakin. she tries to tell him it’s not his fault, he’s not alone, she loved him too, they can grieve him together— he won’t let her in. the obi wan she knew is gone; what can she do? she cannot help someone who does not want to be helped. he won’t talk to her about what happened and she doesn’t understand why. years later, she understands why. in horror, at last, she understands why. she’s questioning everything all over again. how can she trust herself? everything she was ever taught was taught to her by— him. obi wan, still nothing like his old self, but a little better, now, thanks to the purpose luke (and leia) have given him, runs into ahsoka again. he recognises her guilt, her grief, her doubt, immediately. her fear. her fear of herself. she knows. his belated attempt to be there for her isn’t the comfort he hoped it would be. it’s not that she’s angry. not at him. it’s just that she doesn’t believe him. not anymore. he tries to reassure her that she is not destined to fall into the dark side. all ahsoka hears are empty words. his belated belief in her is just empty now. you believed in him, too, she says, defeated. you always said we were so alike. give me a reason. any reason to believe in me that you haven’t once said about him.
and he can’t.
#obi wan#ahsoka tano#i actually think that the distance between obi wan and ahsoka in the rebellion era makes a LOT of sense#beyond ‘we can’t retcon the OT so… uh…they think that each other are dead’#ahsoka represents everything obi wan doesn’t want to confront after mustafar#and by the time he has healed enough to be ready#she is all grown up; grown away from him; and his voice is no longer the voice of counsel and reason she goes to for guidance#even after they both know the truth about vader#they’re not on the same page#obi wan leaves his confrontation convinced anakin is gone and vader is his killer#ahsoka leaves her confrontation with vader believing anakin remains. she tries to bring him out again and almost succeeds.#obi wan breaks the mask and sees anakin dead#ahsoka breaks the mask and sees anakin alive#they are not on the same page#i think obi wan can’t accept cader could be redeemable#because he can’t accept that HE can’t be the one to save him. he can’t accept that he’s not enough#but i think that ahsoka could. luke and leia could bring something out of anakin that she cannot just like they did for obi wan#no matter how hard he tries obi wan just can’t find the words to convery his faith and pride in ahsoka#putting his wholehearted faith into her means nothing after his wholehearted faith in anakin proved to be undeserved#how can he find the words?#he cannot#someone could#someone could remind her that she is able to let go; something anakin never could do; that she is more like qui gon now than her master#she embodies the true selflessness of the jedi; for she doesn’t prioritise lives based on how much she loves them but by their innate worth#you have mastered the very lesson that anakin could not; which led to his fall#someone could find the right words#but i don’t think that someone could be obi wan#because that would mean admitting that /anakin/ fell; it goes against the lie that vader killed him#OT era obi wan is still in denial#but i think ahsoka acknowledges anakin’s duality in a way obi wan can’t accept
