🦇 Stupid Prizes Book Review 🦇
❓ #QOTD Would you rather run an empire but have to get married for it or have all your dreams come true without the love of your life beside you? ❓
[ Find my review below. ]
🦇 Gracie's father, Big Daddy Boom, is a popular vlogger in the off-roading world. Eager to leave his daughter the legacy he's built, he tells the world like that her husband will become to the heir to his profitable online empire, prompting a competition. That same morning, Gracie's childhood friend Jasper returns to town, eager to apologize for leaving her years ago. In exchange for her forgiveness, Gracie asks for one thin: his hand in marriage. Though Jasper doesn't care about the fortune, he'll do anything for Gracie, even if it means falling prey to stupid games in the process.
💙 Welp. This was just one giant, never-ending, miscommunication trope mess. The lack of communication builds every conflict, every bit of anxiety between both the main characters, who are both mindlessly in love with each other, convinced the other wants nothing to do with them, and therefore unwilling to admit it. Since every minor source of conflict is built on that primary miscommunication, the story gets repetitive fast. There's more worried, frantic internalizing and exposition than action, creating a story that's more tell than show. To start the story with the wedding ruins the build-up and steals any potential source of tension (not that Gracie's fake marriage ploy is a surprise). Gracie's exposition at the beginning makes her look cold, establishing her as a character who is willing to use someone for personal gain (though later, she's painted as someone who always puts everyone else's needs ahead of her own). Instead, it would have been stronger to start with the phone call that tore them apart, or even the funeral; a moment of heavy emotion that leaves us invested in the characters. As much as I loved a childhood friends/second chance romance, I can't root for these two when they're so unwilling to start with something as fundamental as talking to one another.
💜 The premise of a father using the marriage of convenience trope in the modern age to secure his future and daughter's happiness for a social media empire /almost/ feels unique, if not entirely too farfetched. It was sweet to see how far and hard and fast Jasper fell for his childhood best friend, to the point that he was apparently saving himself for her, all while Gracie is fighting off the attraction she felt for him since they were kids. The competition could have been a fun opportunity to toss us into the off-roading word, though we barely get enough detail to really see and experience it. Gracie and Jasper's shared grief was another wonderful opportunity for healing and growth, but their grief is constantly side-stepped, simply used as the catalyst for Jasper leaving.
💙 On another note, I read the ebook version of this using KU, and it is absolutely riddled with spelling and punctuation errors. Nothing pulls me out of a story faster than wanting to cover every page with red editor's ink.
🦇 Recommended for fans of the marriage of convenience trope or a story entirely reliant on miscommunication.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🚗 Fake Marriage / of Convenience 🔧 Forced Proximity ❤️ Childhood Friends ❤️ Friends to Lovers ⚙️ Second Chance Romance 🏎️ Dual POV
💬 Quotes ❝ “You don’t have to drive trucks to be special, you know,” he says looking off into the distance. “You’re already special.”“I don’t do anything special,” I say miserably. “Well,” he pauses, his forehead wrinkling as he thinks, but then it smooths and his shy smile is back. “You’re special to me.” ❞
❝ I’d take any curse to keep her well, any madness to keep her sane, any poverty to keep her flush, any loss to keep her whole. ❞

STEM Romances: A reading list
Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood
Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project - a literal dream come true - Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward. Sure, Levi is attractive in a tall, dark, and piercing-eyes kind of way. But Levi made his feelings toward Bee very clear in grad school - archenemies work best employed in their own galaxies far, far away. But when her equipment starts to go missing and the staff ignore her, Bee could swear she sees Levi softening into an ally, backing her plays, seconding her ideas... devouring her with those eyes. The possibilities have all her neurons firing. But when it comes time to actually make a move and put her heart on the line, there's only one question that matters: What will Bee Königswasser do?
The Hookup Plan by Farrah Rochon
Successful pediatric surgeon London Kelley just needs to find some balance and de-stress. According to her friends Samiah and Taylor, what London really needs is a casual hookup. A night of fun with no strings. But no one—least of all London—expected it to go down at her high school reunion with Drew Sullivan, millionaire, owner of delicious abs, and oh yes, her archnemesis. Now London is certain the road to hell is paved with good sex. Because she’s found out the real reason Drew’s back in Austin: to decide whether her beloved hospital remains open. Worse, Drew is doing everything he can to show her that he’s a decent guy who actually cares. But London’s not falling for it. Because while sleeping with the enemy is one thing, falling for him is definitely not part of the plan.
My Mechanical Romance by Alexene Farol Follmuth
Bel would rather die than think about the future. College apps? You’re funny. Extracurriculars? Not a chance. But when she accidentally reveals a talent for engineering at school, she’s basically forced into joining the robotics club. Even worse? All the boys ignore Bel—and Neelam, the only other girl on the team, doesn't seem to like her either. Enter Mateo Luna, captain of the club, who recognizes Bel as a potential asset—until they start butting heads. Bel doesn’t care about Nationals, while Teo cares too much. But as the nights of after-school work grow longer and longer, Bel and Teo realize they've made more than just a combat-ready robot for the championship: they’ve made each other and the team better. Because girls do belong in STEM.
Mistakes Were Made by Meryl Wilsner
When Cassie Klein goes to an off-campus bar to escape her school’s Family Weekend, she isn’t looking for a hookup—it just happens. Buying a drink for a stranger turns into what should be an uncomplicated, amazing one-night stand. But then the next morning rolls around and her friend drags her along to meet her mom—the hot, older woman Cassie slept with. Erin Bennett came to Family Weekend to get closer to her daughter, not have a one-night stand with a college senior. In her defense, she hadn’t known Cassie was a student when they'd met. To make things worse, Erin’s daughter brings Cassie to breakfast the next morning. And despite Erin's better judgement—how could sleeping with your daughter’s friend be anything but bad?—she and Cassie get along in the day just as well as they did last night. What should have been a one-time fling quickly proves impossible to ignore, and soon Cassie and Erin are sneaking around. Worst of all, they start to realize they have something real. But is being honest about the love between them worth the cost?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The Gossip and the Grump by Pippa Grant 🎧
Another very solid read from Grant, this small town romance was easy to binge in one sitting. I loved the initial encounter between these strangers, which showed the softer side to both. They let down their guards for one night and revealed pieces of themselves that they probably wouldn’t have with anyone else. That makes their second encounter – as brand new enemies – all the more delicious, and…

Book Review: By the Book by Jasmine Guillory
Tumblr media
By the Book is a part of a series of modern fairy tale re-imaginings by different authors. Jasmine Guillory inserts many moments that are reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast.
Main character and New York native Izzy is an editorial assistant who is unhappy in her current position. In a twirl of events, she ends up on the California doorstep of one of the publishing companies most difficult writers, Beau, in hopes to encourage him to get in a manuscript on the memoir he is writing.
Izzy becomes an extended house guest of Beau as she begins to help him work through his memoir. Izzy mirrors Beauty and the Beast's Belle several times in the novel, as she is a sweet girl who loves books and constantly thinks the house and inanimate objects within the house are speaking to her. On the other hand, Beau is a reflection of the Beast, guarded and sometimes extremely cruel.
The real twist is the squeaky clean love story that unfolds. At times, it's hard to tell if the two character will ever get on the same page and stay there. Guillory does an interesting job of keeping the reader guessing when it comes to the main characters.
If you love classic fairy tales, then this one is for you!

✩🍼🌴Review:
“Babymoon or Bust” is a romance reader’s paradise!
After a wild night with a handsome mountain man leaves Tessie Truelove pregnant, she vows to raise the baby all by herself. But when Solomon Wilder, her brooding baby daddy, crashes her carefully planned babymoon determined to be a constant in his child’s life, Tessie has no choice but to strike up a deal: spend three days together to figure out how to co-parent their son. Three days turn into a week and suddenly Tessie begins to wonder if she has found what she has spent her entire life avoiding—true love.
This. Book. Is. Everything. I’ve never devoured something so fast. It isn’t easy to execute the unexpected pregnancy trope well partly because it is very formulaic and typically follows the same plot. I LOVED Hunter’s take on it because she zeroes in on Tessie’s babymoon, which I haven’t seen done before. “Babymoon or Bust” is also dual pov and I loved being able to see how Tessie and Soloman’s feelings for each other grow across the span of the three days that they spend together.
Additionally, I thought that both Tessie and Solomon’s respective internal conflicts added complexity to their characters. Tessie’s emotional wall derives from years of heartbreak. Solomon feels an immense amount of guilt over the death of his first wife. I appreciated that both characters independently worked through their issues while still supporting and uplifting each other.
If you love the “there’s only one bed” trope, steamy moments of intimacy, overprotective grumps, and strong, independent FMCs then I could not recommend this book enough!

“At least we aren’t total strangers.”
“Still, I’m sorry about all of this, Joon-ah. I’m sure you had plans for your night.”
Namjoon couldn’t really think of anywhere else he’d rather be. Maybe he could use this moment to work up his nerve to tell Hoseok about the resurrection of his college crush, because—ha ha—wasn’t that wild? Maybe he would fully commit to his humiliation and ask Hoseok on a date.
Maybe he should start by asking Hoseok if he was even available.
“We could—we could crash backstage? There’s a couch.” Hoseok’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Or there’s the—ah, the bed.”
“The bed. Right.”
“It’s a stage bed. It’s not exactly the height of comfort, but it’s better than the floor.” Hoseok lifted his thumb to his mouth, nibbling nervously at the tip. “The couch… sags. In the middle.”
“Right.” Namjoon kept saying that like he understood anything that was happening. Like there was anything more important than beautiful, half-naked Hoseok holding a bag stocked with condoms and edible lube.
The universe was really going all out with its Death to Namjoon agenda.

Book Review for The Mistake
Tumblr media
Stepping back into the Off-Campus universe, I feel like I never left. The story picks right back up with Logan, Garrett’s best friend and rock star on the ice (and if campus rumors are correct – in other places as well).
For Grace, freshman year at Briar University hasn’t been the most memorable experience. While she has had fun attending parties and meeting people with her roommate and best friend of thirteen years by her side, SHE hasn’t broken out of her shell and done something epic, something wild, something that makes her upcoming birthday worth celebrating (for once). Deciding to sit out one night of partying in exchange for feeding her lust for actions movies, Grace is shocked beyond words when she answers a knock on her dorm room door and finds herself staring at John Logan, star defenseman of the Briar University hockey team and one of the hottest guys on campus!
Having played hockey since he was a kid, Logan has always dreamed of playing for the big leagues – that is until an unfortunate accident in his family sealed his fate, making any possibilities of his NHL dream non-existent. Accepting his post graduate future, Logan is determined to enjoy what life has to offer: women, parties, and did we say women? One problem, he is head over heels for his best friend’s girlfriend and can’t seem to move on. Needing to keep his distance from the happy couple, Logan decides to head to his friends dorm for a party. In his eagerness to escape, he is sans phone as he walks through the quiet halls. Believing he remembers the dorm room number, he knocks to find himself face to face with a gorgeous brunette. Still in need of a distraction and unable to connect with a cab company using her phone, Logan takes advantage of the situation. What was supposed to have been a quiet night in turns into an opportunity of a lifetime for Grace and an whirlwind unexpected revelation for Logan.
I am consumed by the world Kennedy is beginning to build. Hannah was so instrumental in Logan’s romance and to see the transformation of Garrett make me want to keep reading this series. I can’t wait to dive into Dean’s story and see how these layers keep building!

Book Review: Husband Material (London Calling #2) by Alexis Hall
Book Review: Husband Material (London Calling #2) by Alexis Hall
Read my review of the first book in the London Calling series, Boyfriend Material The structural premise of this book, four weddings and a funeral, is spelled out in the blurb. Between that setup, genre expectations over how a second story about an established relationship will play out, and the title itself, we go in with a pretty good idea of how this book will go. But Luc is nothing if not…
