Cola taste test newsletter, 7/22/2022
Cola. Not a topic you’d expect from me, but I got a bug in my ear to try something different this time.
This should be seen as a supplement to my cola taste test stream today; if you haven’t seen it, you should watch it first. It’s only 35 minutes long.
It all started with the EmpLemon New Coke video essay. He mentioned that Coca-Cola reissued New Coke in 2019 as a Stranger Things promo, and I got curious.
And then it snowballed.
If you saw my stream today, you saw me try 12 different colas, and compare them. The methodology was simple: I wanted to compare varieties of cola that were at some point generally available in stores (sorry, Coke Zero Byte), and see what I thought.
The colas, in the order I ranked them, were:
Pepsi-Cola with Real Sugar
New Coke
Pepsi
Mexican Coke
RC Cola
Coca-Cola Starlight
Coca-Cola
Coke Zero
Coca-Cola with Coffee (Caramel)
Coca-Cola with Coffee (Mocha)
Diet Coke
Big K Diet Cola
Yes, regular Coca-Cola was dead last, aside the ones I actively disliked.
I thought I’d take this opportunity to go more in-depth on my thoughts, say things I only realized after the stream that I think deserve elaborating on.
Firstly, Pepsi-Cola with Real Sugar. I expected it to be a standout, because of the simple fact that, before the taste test I drank the entire case less the two cans I had set aside, in a single week, at one point three cans in a day. But I didn’t expect HOW well it’d do.
I also didn’t expect how badly Mexican Coke or regular Coke would do. Mexican Coke, my personal prediction for no.1, ended up in fourth, and you know how bad regular Coke did.
Another thing that surprised me was just how BAD the Coca-Cola with coffee was. Coke with coffee was by far the worst, not because it was BAD but because it just, did not fit with the flavor profile I’d want from a cola. It very much just tasted like you carbonated cold brew and dumped sugar in it. I’ll drink it, but it requires a very specific mood.
Another surprising thing that I only realized after ending was the impact of gulp size. Some of my thoughts shifted when taking larger gulps, a flaw in my methodology. I want to revisit New Coke specifically, but that actually brings me to the next point: desensitization.
By the end, when I tried Coke Zero, it tasted, frankly, of nothing compared to the other drinks. This makes me wonder if I disliked the larger gulp of New Coke after ending because I was simply desensitized to the flavor of cola by that point.
Diet Coke and Big K Diet Cola, however, DEFINITELY were not victims of desensitization, having gone first, and they revealed something that was very surprising: I don’t enjoy diet cola, I only tolerate it. When I’m expecting full-sugar cola, it tastes downright TERRIBLE.
RC Cola is another one that I’m not surprised ranked as high as it did; having had it alongside the Pepsi with Real Sugar I drank in the weeks prior to the taste test, I found I was a big fan, but not as much as Mexican Coke, which is consistent with the results.
There’s nothing else really noteworthy or remarkable I want to note, except for the fact that, based on this, I guess I’m more of a fan of Pepsi than I am of Coke, which is surprising, as I’ve been a Coke drinker all my life. This raises an interesting point, imo.
I drank Coke because it was the ‘default’, and so it was what I was exposed to, and what I developed an affinity for. I feel like this is the case with some brands. Coca-Cola is the default cola. McDonald’s is the default fast food place. Starbucks is the default coffee.
A lot of people just, don’t try things because they stick to what they know, and what they know is often what is pushed as the default or the norm by society. As of 2019, McDonald’s has 21.4% market share, and Burger King…only 1.16%.
What this teaches me really, is that I need to be more open to new experiences. As long as I stick to what’s seen as the ‘norm’, I’m denying myself the chance to discover something I may like more. Generally how I already try to live my life, but this just underscores it.
I’ll likely revisit all of the colas in the near future, casually and individually, and gather my thoughts then. If interested, I will try to re-rank them based on this, but I don’t think the topic deserves that much rigor; this was for fun, after all.
The big things we’ve learned is, I do significantly prefer Mexican Coke over Coke, it turns out I’m a Pepsi drinker, and New Coke should have stuck around.
Re: desensitization, I’ll be re-running the Coke vs Mexican Coke test another day, and will tell you my results.

Concha y Toro: is it just about the taste?
This week's reading on Concha y Toro reminds me of a classic real-world example demonstrating how sensory expectations can greatly impact perceived reality by consumers: the Pepsi Challenge. Originally, this challenge involved blind taste tests where consumers were asked to taste two colas (Pepsi and Coca-Cola) and determine which one they preferred based solely on taste. Surprisingly, the results favored Pepsi, which Pepsi then leveraged in its advertising to position itself as a more favorable choice over Coca-Cola based on taste. Moreover, in the competitive strategy class I took during my first semester of MBA, we replicated this challenge by giving several students blind taste tests where they were asked to taste Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and an unknown brand of cola. The results were no less startling—students gave different identifications for what they believed was Coca-Cola, Pepsi, and the generic cola, yet no one got the answers correctly. As the students discussed their mental processes, it turned out that they all associated their favorite taste during the blind taste tests with their personal favorite brand (either Coca-Cola or Pepsi) and vice versa. This further exemplifies how customers' actual sensory experiences are deeply shaped by their sensory expectations, most often influenced by their distinct brand perceptions.
Reflecting on the profound impact of sensory expectations, I have come to understand more deeply the importance of integrating sensory experiences into the brand's identity and marketing efforts in order to develop a more successful branding strategy. Starbucks, for example, has successfully harnessed the power of sensory marketing by creating a consistent, distinct smell of their brewed coffee combined with the characteristic music playlist in their stores worldwide. This strategy can be particularly effective in sectors like food and beverages, cosmetics, and apparel, where sensory experiences are a critical aspect of the product offering, and there's so much we could learn from them.

This process involves the use of the solvent ethyl acetate to remove the caffeine from the coffee beans. Is Folgers Decaf Coffee Naturally Decaffeinated?įolgers uses the direct solvent process to decaffeinate their coffee. There is no legal obligation for a coffee manufacturer or brand to reveal the exact caffeine content in decaffeinated coffee. An independent organisation has measured the caffeine content to be 0.24 mg of caffeine in total for a 6 ounce cup of coffee. They do not list the exact caffeine content in the product details for the decaf Folgers K-cup is not revealed. The owner of Folgers Coffee, J.M Smucker’s list their Decaf coffee as 99.7% caffeine free.
Folgers decaf coffee caffeine content free#
Most brands are 99.9% caffeine free and legally must meet the minimum requirement set by the Food And Drug Administration of 97% caffeine free to be labelled as a decaffeinated coffee. Like all great coffee brands Folgers coffee have a line of decaf coffee K-Cups for people who perhaps don’t enjoy caffeinated coffee, like myself after 6pm, but still want to enjoy a the taste of a great cup of coffee.ĭecaffeinated coffee, is as the word suggests, has the caffeine removed from the coffee beans but not all the caffeine is removed. You will not notice at all that this is a cup of coffee that is decaffeinated. It has all the classic rich Colombian coffee bean flavor with the full-bodied taste and rich flavors of earthy, tobacco notes and an intense aroma, with hints of nuttiness and sweet, strong caramel flavors that is literally the classic flavor that you would associate with top quality Colombian coffee beans. "People who are trying to eliminate caffeine from their diet should be aware that popular espresso drinks such as lattes (which contain two shots of espresso) can deliver as much caffeine as a can of Coca-Cola - about 31 milligrams." "The important point is that decaffeinated is not the same as caffeine-free," says Roland Griffiths, PhD, a professor of behavioral biology and neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, in the news release. Researchers say even though the caffeine content of decaffeinated coffees is low, people could develop a dependence on them. The results showed that the caffeine content of the decaffeinated espresso shots varied widely - from 3 to nearly 16 milligrams the caffeine content of the decaf brewed coffee ranged from 12 to 13.4 milligrams per 16-ounce serving. Next, researchers tested several samples of decaffeinated espresso shots and decaf brewed coffee from the same Starbucks location to determine if caffeine content varied in the same drinks from the same location. That's about a tenth of the caffeine found in an 8-ounce cup of regular drip-brewed coffee, which contains about 85 milligrams of caffeine. The caffeine content ranged from 8.6 milligrams to 13.9 milligrams. They found all but one - decaffeinated Folgers Instant, purchased at a Krystal fast-food restaurant - contained caffeine.

Hey any oddly specific annie headcanons?
Love reading your stuff :)
Thank you! <3 Absolutely, Annie is amazing :)
Oddly Specific Annie Headcanons
Tumblr media
She loves white cheddar goldfish, but she hates how the powder gets all over her hands
Definitely wins at arm wrestling EVERY time. She literally has never lost because she either overpowers the opponent, or scares them into giving up.
She doesn't really drink soda very often, but her favorite is cherry coca cola.
She puts her headphones in when she's walking through the halls so that nobody will try to talk to her. She definitely glares a lot, though, so nobody would really try to bother her anyway.
Her music taste shocks people. She listens to some popular music, but it's mostly quieter indie. Big fan of Paramore, as well.
Love Story by Taylor Swift saved on her phone "by accident" but it's one of her most listened to songs.
She almost never participates in class discussions, even if they're graded, but she does really well on tests and papers. It really confuses teachers, and when a few of them asked her why she wastes points by not participating, she just shrugged.
Definitely has giant doc marten's and has stepped on people's feet with them. No apologies, and no regret.
People who speak just a LITTLE too loud physically bother her. She probably doesn't say anything, but she's just on edge for the whole conversation.
Similarly, she absolutely hates when people say "ummm" a million times in conversation, she's just too efficient, and they're wasting so much time
Her English folder is green, her math folder is white, her history folder is purple, her science folder is red, her language folder is yellow, and any other electives are purple or black.
She alternates between an iced chai with oatmilk and straight up black coffee
When she gets really stressed, she drives far away so nobody will recognize her, rolls the windows down, and turns her music on full volume. And she just drives like that in circles until her head is cleared.
She has two pet rats, and they are her "favorite people". She regularly tells them this.
She's had this one stuffed animal since she was really little, and she freaks out when she can't find it. It's just comforting for her to have it.
She (mostly) reads messages, but she only responds if they're urgent. Otherwise, she might use those reactions with imessage, but she usually just won't acknowledge it.
Never answers calls. Even if it's someone who's contact is in her phone, she will let it ring, or just plain hang up. The only way to get a hold of her in an emergency is to FaceTime her, which she'll always pick up, even if she rolls her eyes.

The new hype about CBD
Tumblr media
Products containing the hemp ingredient cannabidiol, short CBD, are readily available.
They are considered supplements and are therefore not as strictly controlled as medicines.
The legal situation is unclear; also the health effects are not well researched.
Tumblr media
At Munich Central Station it now smells of marijuana more often. Dried hemp flowers, hemp oil, chocolate and lollipops you can buy without a prescription in a small shop next to a supermarket. The decor is reminiscent of a hipster business, the counter is white, the retro cabinets could have come from an old pharmacy. No "Bob Marley" poster hangs on the wall, and the seller does not wear dreadlocks.
Tumblr media
And the THC is missing, the substance that gives cannabis its intoxicating effect. Instead, everything contains cannabidiol, short CBD.
The molecule comes from the female hemp plant and has anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and relaxing, also on the muscles. It binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system of the body. While THC provides activating and psychoactive intoxication in cannabis, CBD is the calming and neuroprotective equivalent. Three drops dripped under the tongue, and nervousness, headaches, and inflammation disappear - at least that's what many consumers promise. The dark green hemp oil is presented as a capsule or in drops, it tastes bitter with herbal seasoning, reminiscent of the smell of damp soil or moss.
Tumblr media
The Coca-Cola Corporation recently expressed interest in a cannabinoid beverage
The habituation-needy taste does not diminish the hype. In New York, the sudden spread of CBD-displaced foods such as cocktails, brownies, and coffees is so out of control that the authorities impose fines on restaurants and cafés that make their menu CBD appealing. Also in Germany, you can buy CBD at the drugstore, start-ups and shops are shooting up in big cities. The Coca-Cola Corporation recently expressed interest in possible cannabinoid drinks.
Consumers cheer in Internet forums, CBD has freed them from depression, muscle spasms, and chronic joint pain.
At the same time, disappointing pain patients report that they have no effect on the cannabis remedy. Many also wonder if CBD oil is not illegal. Some see CBD as a serious drug or natural product, others as a new, dangerous legal high.
Adding to the confusion is that dealers of CBD oil in Germany are not allowed to recommend or list dosages, which causes CBD. The products are considered as dietary supplements and therefore may not have a pronounced pharmacological effect and can not be used therapeutically. At the same time the control is eliminated: for drugs must be an effect demonstrated, for dietary supplements not. Also, the composition is not regulated to the same extent. An ideal mixed situation for cheaters, who smell the fast business.
Tumblr media
In fact, many online store products do not live up to their promises, as recent researchers from Italy have shown by sampling. For around two out of three of the products purchased in Europe, the CBD content on the label did not match the content. Some did not contain any CBD, one more THC than allowed. This was also fatal to traders in Munich a few days ago, as about 180 police officers searched various hemp shops, including the one at the main station. Suspicion: too much THC in the products.
There is also uncertainty in Brussels. The EU is currently discussing whether CBD is a novel food, a novel food. The directive states that all food imported and consumed after 1997 must be tested before it is allowed to enter the market. Manufacturers of CBD would face millions in licensing costs and lengthy procedures - for each product.
"If the hemp extract has the same natural concentration as the crop, it should not be a novel food, according to EU directives," says Lorenza Romanesque, spokeswoman for the European Industrial Hemp Association. The origin of the oils probably plays a role: some are not pressed from hemp, but are edible oils, which were artificially buried CBD crystals. As a result, they could no longer be a natural hemp product, but could be considered "novel food".

Today is NOT Resort Day... let's hear it for the beignets I won't be eating with Port Orleans gators, the pools I won't be sneaking into, the Coca Cola taste testing in Disney Springs that remains undrank, the Poly ukuleles that shall play no more, fireworks unseen on the Contemporary balcony and the World of Disney store that will not be tempting my wallet today as I start this horrible morning with rum in my coffee... for it is 5pm somewhere, even if that somewhere is never here. Dramatic sigh.
Unless...

TEN FACT GAME
Got tagged by: @stereotyped-orange
Didn’t expect to get tagged again for this. I’m not that interesting, but I’ll try to come up with something lol
1. I’m really good with directions. That might partly be because my mom is so bad with them so I’ve been directing her where to go since I was like 7 lol I rarely if ever get lost and can quickly navigate around an area. As long as I pay attention the first time I go somewhere, I can get there again without any problems.
2. I hate coffee. Don’t like the smell of it or the taste. Rather than a Ko-Fi, I’d rather have a Coke-Fi lol XD Or a Hug-Fi. Send me all the hugs please <3
3. As referenced above, my favorite drink without a doubt is Coca Cola. I’ve literally been drinking it since I was a baby. I actually had it in my bottle. Both my parents blame each other, so I have no idea who gave me my first addicting sip lol They tried to wean me off of it by watering it down, but according to my mom, I could tell the difference. One time I handed the bottle back to her, and she pretended to change it. When she tried to give it back to me, I wouldn’t accept it. I was serious about my Coke XD
4. I love math. Yes, I’m one of those people haha Algebra was my favorite subject in high school. I didn’t have to take college algebra ‘cause I scored high enough on my ACT that I got credit for the class without having to take it. However, I was still involved in college algebra ‘cause my friends had to take it, and they’d ask me for homework help. Also, for a little while during graduate school, I tutored one of my accounting teacher’s sons in algebra. I enjoyed it ‘cause I basically got paid to do algebra lol
5. Yes, I was the nerd that classmates would go to for homework help. I wouldn’t do it for you, but I would help you solve problems and find answers. One time during my senior year of high school I walked into my English teacher’s classroom during like 7th period when one of my classmates was taking a makeup vocab test. He was struggling big time, so the teacher told him that I could help him. Of course, I didn’t tell him the answers, but I basically walked him through the process and helped him figure things out. Afterwards, my teacher told me I should become a teacher, but I had no interest since I knew what my dad’s salary was like lol (My dad teaches and coaches.)
6. I’m a coach’s daughter, but I hate sports and absolutely suck at them haha I hate running with a passion. I’m way too lazy for that XD The only thing I’m remotely good at is basketball, and that’s just cause of my height. And ‘cause my dad made me play so much with him haha (I’m only 5′8 so I’m not even that tall. I was just taller than all the other kids when I was younger lol)
7. While not so much nowadays, I used to be incredibly clumsy. I once fractured my foot tripping over a hole in the ground lol Nowadays, I mainly run into things randomly. Some days, I’ll wake up with bruises and have no idea where they came from haha
8. ‘Cause of my dad’s job, I moved around a lot as a kid. I went to 5 different schools growing up and never stayed at the same one more than 4 years. However, I spent my 9th-12th grade years at the school that I went to for pre-k and kindergarten. That was the first time I was actually excited about changing schools ‘cause it meant I got to go to a school where I actually knew people. It was a super small school too, so pretty much all my old classmates were still there. My graduating class had 19 students XD
9. It wasn’t till recent years that I realized I’m kind of the mom friend lol I don’t really have a lot of friends, but if I have someone I care about, I like to look out for them any way I can. I can be pretty protective too if need be. I just like seeing the people I care about happy <3
10. Despite how people associate fiery tempers with redheads, I have never once lost my temper and gotten really angry. The most I’ll ever get is irritated or annoyed. I honestly have no idea what I’d be like if I got honest to goodness furious. Nothing has ever happened to make me that mad. I think I’m just too chill to get angry lol Or maybe it’s ‘cause I’m not that emotional a person so I calm down easily enough. So, if anyone ever worries about angering me, don’t worry. The chances of that happening are slim to none lol
Rather than tag people, I’ll just let y’all decide if you wanna do it. If you do, feel free to tag me, so I can see what you write ^-^

Coke with Coffee is (finally) here
New Post has been published on https://appradab.com/coke-with-coffee-is-finally-here/
Coke with Coffee is (finally) here
The product is made with Brazilian coffee and comes in dark blend, vanilla and caramel flavors. There’s also a calorie-free zero sugar version. Each 12-ounce can has 69 milligrams of caffeine. That’s about half as much as is in a 12-ounce cup of coffee but far more than what’s in a can of Coke.
The new product comes at a time when Coca-Cola (KO) is focusing on its core products, including Coke and Coke Zero Sugar. Last year, the company announced plans to cut its portfolio in half and has discontinued brands like Tab and Odwalla to focus on its most powerful ones.
Coke with Coffee was piloted in Japan in 2018. Since then, it has become available in over 30 markets throughout the world, including Australia, Italy and Vietnam.
Now, it seems Americans are finally ready.
The company spent about two years testing the latest product in the United States ahead of the launch, said Brandan Strickland, brand director of trademark at Coca-Cola in North America.
“It’s not just testing a product and a formula, but it’s also making sure that we have the right packaging, that we’re really understanding what consumers want in the drink,” he said. The formula for Coke with Coffee differs from region to region to cater to local tastes.
Coke with Coffee is designed to appeal to customers looking for an afternoon caffeine pickup that’s an alternative to regular coffee, or a regular Coke. People may feel the need for a boost now more than ever, Strickland said, with the pandemic forcing many to work while caring for children and other relatives.
Correction: A previous version of this story misstated Brandan Strickland’s title. He is brand director of trademark at Coca-Cola in North America.
