So, about a month ago, I read about Matthew Lawrence from Boy Meets World and several other things talking on the podcast he does with his brothers about being sexually harassed by a male director in a hotel room, and the director in question promised him a role in a Marvel movie if he took off his clothes and let the director take Polaroids.
Lawrence left the room and says his agency fired him for leaving.
In terms of how the industry treats sexual harassment victims, this is not surprising. Especially for male victims, who are expected to act like it doesn't exist for them at ALL.
Anyway, when I first read the quote, I found myself noodling on "Marvel movie" and "Oscar-winning director." Because Matthew didn't--and is not required--to name names, but also, it's such a small pool of options.
There are three Oscar winners in the MCU director pool: Chloe Zhao. Taika Watiti. Kenneth Branagh.
Chloe is off the list immediately because Matthew said it was a man.
But then Taika and Kenneth have never been accused of sexual harassment as far as a quick google search tells me.
The other thing is, Matthew Lawrence in the modern day isn't an actor that would get offered a Marvel contract by having a private meeting with a director. You have to have a certain profile, a certain amount of box office under your feet. He doesn't have that. Not a judgement on him, just a statement of fact. Chris Evans was regularly employed and liked by audiences when he got cast. Same as Mark Ruffalo. Same as Cobie Smulders and definitely the same for Samuel L. Jackson. Same for Paltrow. And even despite his many struggles, the same for RDJ. People showed up either for movies these people were in or--in Cobie's case--the tv show they were on.
Matthew Lawrence joining Boy Meets World was a BIG DEAL. He came on as Shawn's half-brother. Our favorite little meow meow now had a new nemesis/family member. This was top-tier shit.
It was 1997.
In August 1995, The Usual Suspects came out. It won 2 Oscars. It was directed by Bryan Singer. The first X-Men movie came out in 2000.
Bryan Singer didn't win an Oscar for Usual Suspects, but the movie he is heralded for directing DID win two Oscars. Bryan Singer didn't direct an MCU movie, but he directed a movie from Marvel comics.
And this is Matthew Lawrence in the timeframe that he was gaining attention for his role in Boy Meets World and the time Singer would have been casting for Cyclops:
Tumblr media
Bryan Singer has a long, awful history of being a sexual harasser at BEST and a sexual abuser at worst. While his reputation catching up with him around the time he failed to direct Bohemian Rhapsody seems to have finally derailed his career, he was literally untouchable for decades as he preyed on very young men.
To call him an open secret doesn't do it justice, okay.
I can't stress enough: NAMING BRYAN SINGER IS BASED ON ME KNOWING ENOUGH SHIT TO DRAW A LINE. MATTHEW LAWRENCE HAS NOT NAMED HIS HARASSER AND SHOULD NOT BE FORCED TO DO SO. YOU WANNA HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS TAKE, IT'S MY TAKE. LEAVE MATTHEW OUT OF IT.

Chloe: The Vincent van Gogh Connection
The untold “female” history of Chloe, the nude artwork by French artist Jules Joseph Lefebvre, was the inspiration for my doctoral project, and a new novel-length work of historical fiction. This beautiful painting, which has hung at Young and Jackson Hotel in Melbourne for over a century, has been igniting the imagination of admirers ever since its first unveiling in the Australian colonies at the Sydney International Exhibition in 1879.

In presence of the muse: novelist Katrina Kell, with the painting Chloe in Young and Jackson hotel. (Photo: Chris Hopkins)
Her portrait has won hearts for generations, but there is more to Chloe than meets the eye
She’s the star of one of Melbourne’s best-known pubs and generations of patrons have taken the vibrant French painting called Chloe to their hearts.
Soldiers came to Young and Jackson hotel to drink in front of Jules Lefebvre’s celebrated nude, for luck before they went off to war, and returned to toast to her if they made it home.
The painting is on tourists’ and even locals’ must-see lists, and art students come to sketch her.
But most know little about the model who posed for the striking oil on canvas in Lefebvre’s Paris studio 150 years ago.
In the latest instance of the painting’s power as a muse, academic and writer Katrina Kell has written a novel titled Chloe, inspired by Marie Pellegrin, who she believes was Lefebvre’s real-life model.

A SECOND generation publican, Allan Ryan (pictured inset) became famous during the 1940s and 50s for his music writing talents. With orchestra leader William Flynn, Ryan, licensee of Melbourne’s Young & Jackson Hotel (pictured), composed the song, ‘Goodnight, Mr Moon’, which topped the Australian Hit Parade in 1948. Young & Jackson was already famous for its art galleries and the life size oil painting of the nude, Chloe when Ryan became host in 1936. He was the son of Mick Ryan, a publican in Binalong and later Sydney. More pictures and story at the Time Gents website: (via Publican composer made history in 1948 by topping the hit parade)

Where “Chloe” once hung
The curious passer-by in Lonsdale St may wonder why an old-fashioned pair of wrought iron gates, slung between two stone pillars, stand in splendid isolation beside the modern office buildings at No. 460.
A closer look will reveal the word “Rostella” amongst the moss and other growths near the top of each pillar.
The gates and pillars are all that remain of Rostella, a magnificent mansion that used to occupy 468 Lonsdale St. It was built and owned by Dr (later Sir) Thomas Naghten Fitzgerald, a prominent Melbourne surgeon in the latter part of the 19th century.
Fitzgerald was also the owner of Chloe, the famous portrait of a female nude by Jules Lefebre. In 1883 Fitzgerald went to Ireland for three years and offered Chloe to the National Gallery of Victoria for exhibition while he was away.
Her display in the gallery scandalised the residents of Melbourne, particularly as the gallery had begun opening on Sundays. After only three weeks Chloe was removed from display and shipped to Adelaide where she met a more tolerant reception.
Back again with Dr Fitzgerald, Chloe hung in Rostella for the next 21 years. Initially she was on a wall in the front salon but was visible from the street. Once again the good burghers of Melbourne were affronted by this display and poor Chloe was relegated to a back room.
Following Fitzgerald’s death in 1908, Chloe was purchased by Henry Young of Young & Jackson’s hotel at the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets, where she has resided ever since.

Congrats To The Grammys For Finally Getting Their Rock & Metal Category Figured Out
Tumblr media
Following a pretty up-and-down rollercoaster ride the past few years, the Recording Academy has seemingly gotten their stuff together when it comes to their rock and metal categories.
After dealing with an embarrassing year last year where Avenged Sevenfold publically called out the prestigious institution for their lack of support to the metal community, apparently, someone at the Academy was paying attention as this year’s nominees might be one of their best in quite some time.
For Best Metal Performance, the Grammys see a lot of new faces including Between The Buried And Me, Deafheaven, High On Fire and Trivium as well as scene staples Underoath (Underoath were previously nominated back in 2006 for Best Short Form Music Video).
As for Best Rock Performance, previous nominees like Arctic Monkeys, Cris Cornell (rest in peace) and Halestorm are accompanied by the likes of Greta Van Fleet and, surprisingly and well-deserved, FEVER 333.
Another fantastic nomination comes in the Best Rock Song category. Sandwiched between well-known household names like Ghost, Twenty One Pilots, and St. Vincent is Bring Me The Horizon and, for the second time, Greta Van Fleet.
All in all, as much as we bash on award shows for their lack of support towards our hard rock and metal community, this year the Grammys got it right. Were there other artists that deserved a nomination? Of course there were. But considering how things have been in the past (Leonard Cohen Best Rock Performance 2018, Beyonce Best Rock Performance nominee 2017, Tenacious D Best Metal Performance 2015, etc.), we’ll take it.
To check out the full list of nominees to prepare you for the 61st annual Grammy Awards which will take place on Sunday, February 10th, be sure to look below.

Young & Jacksons
Also known as the Melbourne’s ‘most iconic hotel’ is Young & Jacksons. It’s a heritage listed building that was established in 1861 and has been beautifully restored and refurbished over the years. It’s a blend of a boutique bar and a traditional pub and is home to the infamous Chloe, a Melbourne icon and extremely fine work of art; a famous nude portrait which has graced the walls of the Hotel since 1909.
Located on the first floor is the dining room which offers casual dining focusing on Modern Australian Cuisine with an emphasis on fresh local produce. On offer are the pub favourites and an extensive shared plate selection. On the ground floor is the bar and lounge, serving a variety of local craft beers. Sports fans won’t be disappointed, you can catch all the footy and UFC action on the large number of screens with food and drink specials on offer all weekend.
Young & Jacksons is a go to in Melbourne and is known as ‘a place for good people, to share good food and drinks with each other’.

THERE’S a pub in Melbourne’s CBD that’s home to arguably Australia’s most famous ‘nude’. Established in 1861, Young & Jackson (pictured) is one of Australia’s most recognisable hotels. It’s also home to ‘Chloe’ (pictured inset). Established as the Prince’s Bridge Hotel, the pub was made famous by Henry Figsby Young (also pictured inset) and Thomas Joshua Jackson. Young and Jackson were cousins, born in Dublin, who as hoteliers partnered to host several Melbourne pubs. Young was a pioneer of Melbourne, of gold-mining, and of the licensing trade, who had a passion for collecting art. It was Young who, in 1908, purchased the painting Chloe, that would make his inner-city pub famous.
