Ancardia's Unusual Animals--The Kirin, or Kilin, or Qilin

Classification: Dragon (kirin)

Habitat: Open grasslands, particularly in equatorial zones like the Buldar region and the Silver Coastlands.

            The Kirin (which is spelled Qilin in Sudavaan and Zanalva, and Kilin in the Doravn Aynaul dialect) is a close cousin of the true dragons, especially closely related to the Water Dragon species. It is also the smallest of the draconic family, and the only one which is both terrestrial and lacks natural flight. Similar to its relations, the kirin is naturally potent in the magical department, able to charm itself into running at supernatural speeds, focus and direct lightning, light-rays, and various enchantments and hexes from its horns, and levitate and turn invisible for short periods of time. All of these powers result in a creature very difficult to track down and even more difficult to approach—making them nearly as cryptic and mysterious as the true dragons.

            Adult kirin are about the size of a small horse or a larger pony, and are lightly-built herbivores which prefer tree foliage and fruit to coarser plants and grasses. While usually docile, when pursued, stalked, or directly targeted kirin put up a fierce fight and are known to have slain at least four Aynaul monster-hunters of significant fame when they were hired to track and kill a kirin for some alchemist nobles’ purposes. The few creatures known to have successfully predated on kirin usually target the juveniles, and include rukh, griffon, Antediluvian dire-drakes, and large crocodiles. Kirin are known to roam widely in territories that can be over 100 square miles, almost always overlapping with two or three other kirins’ territories. Once every four years a female kirin becomes able to bear young, and mates with the nearest unrelated male. In the event there are no female kirin in ranges overlapping any of the local male kirins’ territories, the most senior of the males will undergo significant hormonal changes and become female in a span of a few weeks, and mate with a different male himself. Like ungulates, newborn kirin begin to stand, walk, and run within minutes of being born, but unlike ungulates, kirin embryos develop at first in internally-reserved eggs, with the shells of these eggs disintegrating shortly before the time of birth. Kirin grow to full size quickly, within a few years, but do not fully develop the ability to bear or sire young until about 20 years of age. As with true dragons, kirin live long lives, usually exceeding 200 years, sometimes reaching 300 years if they are lucky.

Baki Fantasy AU Art: Day 6

I know that some of y’all have been waiting for this man so I think it’s finally time to reveal him! Kaioh Restu is finally here and I couldn’t quite decide how I wanted to present his design. While I enjoyed the unicorn/centaur design I gave him, I thought that something was missing. That’s when I remembered that Restu is a hardcore man of China and did some lore digging. Apparently there is a one horned beast called the Qilin in Chinese folklore and from that moment I knew, Retsu’s gonna get crossed with this thing right now! So please enjoy both designs I made for him, since I didn’t want to scrap the original one.

Also I could not hold myself back from doing a hair down shot for this guy cause his hair is ✨beautiful✨
