Dragonheart (1996)
Tumblr media
While I didn't enjoy this film, that doesn't mean you won't. No matter what I say, the people involved in this project did it: they actually made a movie. This accomplishment deserves recognition. With that established...
Dragonheart may be a nostalgic darling for many, but not for me. Look beyond the beloved childhood memories and you’ll see it for what it is, a badly-written plot filled with flat characters and fantasy clichés.
After her son is critically wounded, Queen Aislinn (Julie Christie) begs a nearby dragon for help. Draco (Sean Connery) saves the boy's life by giving him half his heart. Years later, Einon (David Thewlis) has plunged the land into despair. Holding dragons responsible for the tyrant's behavior, knight Bowen (Dennis Quaid) has nearly wiped them out. When Draco and Bowen find that they have a common enemy in the ruthless king, they become determined to set the land free.
While the film had good special effects for the time, they have not aged well. That’s not a big deal when you have a top-notch screenplay. Too bad you won't find one here. Watching Dragonheart made me realize that Hollywood's determination to make dragons awesome has made them impossible to work with. Medieval drawings of dragons showed horse-sized lizards with extra eyes, too many (or too few) legs and dog-like faces. I can picture a man with a spear and armour taking that down. Take a look at the beast in this movie. Draco can fly, breathe fire, his tail can split full-grown trees with one swoop, he’s got foot-long claws on his hands and feet, a mouth big enough to swallow a man whole, can swim, is as intelligent as a human and can camouflage himself to the point of near invisibility. The thing’s a flying cataclysm! We hear his kind are regularly slain by knights, but we never see it done because the film knows how powerful Draco is. He single-handedly turns the tide in the last act when the peasants under Einon’s brutal rule finally decide to stage a revolt. If the creature had any brains, the creatures would bathe every inch of soil around them in flames, never land, and rule the world. The movie would’ve never even happened.
Dragonheart doesn’t know what it wants to be. While Draco comically goofs off, people are getting their eyeballs burned out, Dina Meyer is threatened with rape and peasants are being massacred en-masse by knights. A significant amount of the running time has Draco and Bowen learning to set aside their differences while conning entire villages out of their money. You wonder when they'll stand up to the one-dimensional Einon, who probably spends his night strangling puppies for fun. He’s every other kind of evil, so why not?
I could keep complaining about the way characters have to act a specific way for the film to end the way the  writer Charles Edward Pogue wants to, but that's a detail. What matters are the characters. They’re either over-the-top, unlikable, or stupid. Sean Connery may be memorable as Draco, but is it because of the role, or is it his voice?
While Dragonheart had its time in the spotlight and even spanned a minor franchise, the film has no staying power - and not only because of the dated special effects. (On DVD, February 11, 2018)

Dragonheart: Protectors of Av'ladoore.
Chapter One: Waking up on a hill/meeting Silver and Siveth.
Somewhere in the fields of Av'ladoore a young woman slowly wakes up. Her senses were stronger than they used to be. "Was that a dream?" She thought to herself in bewilderment. Slowly she sat up she felt something slide down her side and she stood up with a jolt.
In her haste, she trips over something else and flops head over tail? She didn't really know and she found herself looking at a long blue tail. "Woah! Wait...how?" She said in awe. "This is me? is there a stream or something around?" She thought aloud.
Slowly she got up and tried to take a step only to end up falling and biting her own lip. "Ow." She murmured. "Do you need assistance?" Asked a sudden voice. She yelps and winds up tumbling down a small hill.
She wound up in the water and briefly she panicked but then she slowly calmed down she opened her eyes and then started to use her legs all four of them plus her wings to propel herself up toward the surface.
"Oh, my I-I'm sorry I didn't mean to startle you." Says the voice worriedly. After a bit of coughing and spluttering, she is helped out of the water. "Here, I'll help you back up, you're different than the others that came here, you're smaller and the darkest blue I've ever seen, are you an adult? I'm at least twelve years old!" Says the voice.
"Uh, how dif-Waoh! Uh...um please warn me next time you pick me up please." Says the girl. "Sorry, will do." says the voice. Carefully they take her back up the hill and then gently place her down.
She turns around and is met with a tall young dragon, They have big wide green eyes. Their snout was round and in some others, spikes were more rounded and smooth showing their age was quite young. "My name is Silver!" Says Silver happily. "My name is Kylie..and I am an adult well I'm a teenager almost an adult...I'm seventeen years old." Says Kylie.
"Ooo! what's it like?" He asked excitedly. "Nothing special I guess, I wasn't expecting to be a dragon though...I went to sleep a human and woke up like this." Says Kylie. "Woah! You're one of the few chosen for greatness!" Says Silver excitedly. "Huh? What do you mean?" She asked.
"Sir William can Explain! Can I carry you to him? It'll be easier on both of us so that then later on you can practice walking and stuff." Says Silver. "Uh sure...are we going to fly?" She asked. "Yup if you're comfortable with that." Says Silver.
"I-I guess, I don't like heights but I'd better learn to like them since that's how I'll be getting around aside from walking." Says Kylie. "Okay, I'll go slowly for you." He says kindly. "Thank you. I appreciate that." She says with a smile.
Carefully Silver scruffs her and then takes a few steps until he jumps off the hill and takes flight. "Woah!" She yelps and then screws her eyes shut. "Hey, the view is better with your eyes open." Says a different voice. "Huh?" She murmured.
Slowly she opens her eyes to meet with a pair of deep blue eyes. "Is she afraid? She seems that way." Says the person. "Siveth?" Asked Kylie. "She knows my name? Are you one of those other humans? From the other world?" She asked in amazement.
"Yeah, so I'm not the only one will there be more like me?" Asked Kylie. "Yeah, though I don't know if there will be more here...it's been happening ever since the Dark one came here." Explained Siveth.
"Ah, so well, how long ago was this? um, how is Lukas doing?" She asked. "He's doing fine." Says Siveth. "So what was the movie called again? The one with me and Lukas and stuff." Asked Siveth.
"It's called Dragonheart Vengence." Says Kylie. "Nice." Says Siveth. As they fly Kylie would answered the questions as best as she could and watched everything in curiosity and awe. "Woah..." She murmured. Soon they landed on a cliff outcropping and she looked at everything carefully. "This place is beautiful!" Says Kylie.
"Indeed." Says Siveth.

The Thanksgiving holiday typically brings families and friends together in a celebration of common gratitude for all the good things that have happened during the previous year. People celebrate the holiday in various ways, with parades, football marathons, and attending religious services, but food remains the over-arching theme. For astronauts embarked on long-duration space missions, separation from family and friends is inevitable and they rely on fellow crew members to share in the tradition and enjoy the culinary traditions as much as possible. In this most unusual of years when the pandemic may alter typical Thanksgiving gatherings, it seems appropriate to review how astronauts over the years have celebrated the holiday during their time in space. Enjoy the stories and photographs from orbital Thanksgiving celebrations over the years. Thanksgiving 1973. Left: Skylab 4 astronauts Gerald P. Carr, Edward G. Gibson, and William R. Pogue, the first crew to celebrate Thanksgiving in space. Right: Gibson, left, Pogue, and Carr demonstrate eating aboard Skylab. Skylab 4 astronauts Gerald P. Carr, Edward G. Gibson, and William R. Pogue were the first crew to celebrate Thanksgiving in space on Nov. 22, 1973. On that day, their seventh of an 84-day mission, Gibson and Pogue completed a 6-hour and 33-minute spacewalk, while Carr remained in the Multiple Docking Adaptor with no access to food. All three made up for missing lunch by consuming two meals at dinner time, although neither included special items for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving 1985. Left: STS-61B payload specialists Charles D. Walker, left, and Rodolfo Neri Vela of Mexico enjoy the first Thanksgiving aboard a space shuttle in Atlantis’ middeck. Middle: The STS-61B crew enjoying their Thanksgiving dinner while floating in Atlantis’ middeck. Right: Mexican payload specialist Neri Vela, who introduced tortillas to space menus. Twelve years passed before the next orbital Thanksgiving celebration. On Nov. 28, 1985, the seven-member crew of STS-61B, NASA astronauts Brewster H. Shaw, Bryan D. O’Connor, Jerry L. Ross, Mary L. Cleave, and Sherwood C. “Woody” Spring, and payload specialists Charles D. Walker from the United States and Rodolfo Neri Vela from Mexico, feasted on shrimp cocktail, irradiated turkey, and cranberry sauce aboard the space shuttle Atlantis. Neri Vela introduced tortillas to space menus, and they have remained favorites among astronauts ever since. Unlike regular bread, tortillas do not create crumbs, a potential hazard in weightlessness, and have multiple uses for any meal of the day. The crew of STS-33, NASA astronauts Frederick D. Gregory, John E. Blaha, Manley L. “Sonny” Carter, F. Story Musgrave, and Kathryn C. Thornton, celebrated Thanksgiving aboard space shuttle Discovery in 1989. Gregory and Musgrave celebrated their second Thanksgiving in space two years later, joined by fellow STS-44 NASA astronauts Terrence T. “Tom” Henricks, James S. Voss, Mario Runco, and Thomas J. Hennen aboard space shuttle Atlantis. Thanksgiving 1996. Left: STS-80 astronauts Tamara E. Jernigan, left, Kent V. Rominger, and Thomas D. Jones enjoy Thanksgiving dinner in Columbia’s middeck. Right: The STS-80 crew during aboard Columbia exchanging Thanksgiving greetings with John E. Blaha aboard the Mir space station. In 1996, Blaha celebrated his second Thanksgiving in space with Russian cosmonauts Valeri G. Korzun and Aleksandr Y. Kaleri aboard the space station Mir. Blaha watched the beautiful Earth through the Mir windows rather than his usual viewing fare of football. The STS-80 crew of NASA astronauts Kenneth D. Cockrell, Kent V. Rominger, Tamara E. Jernigan, Thomas D. Jones, and Musgrave, now on his third turkey day holiday in orbit, celebrated Thanksgiving aboard space shuttle Columbia. Although the eight crew members were in different spacecraft in different orbits, they exchanged holiday greetings via space-to-space radio. This marked the largest number of people in space on Thanksgiving Day up to that time. One year later, NASA astronaut David A. Wolf celebrated Thanksgiving with his Russian crewmates Anatoli Y. Solovev, who translated the holiday into Russian as den blagodarenia, and Pavel V. Vinogradov aboard Mir. They enjoyed smoked turkey, freeze-dried mashed potatoes, peas, and milk. Also in orbit at the time was the crew of STS-87, NASA astronauts Kevin R. Kregel, Steven W. Lindsey, Kalpana Chawla, and Winston E. Scott, Takao Doi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, and Leonid K. Kadenyuk of Ukraine, aboard Columbia. The nine crew members aboard the two spacecraft broke the one-year-old record for the largest number of people in space at one time for Thanksgiving, also setting the record for the most nations represented, four. Thanksgiving 2001, Expedition 3 crewmembers enjoying Thanksgiving dinner aboard the space station. Left: NASA astronaut Frank L. Culbertson, left, and Vladimir N. Dezhurov of Roscosmos. Middle: Dezhurov, left, and Mikhail V. Tyurin of Roscosmos. Right: Tyurin, left, and Culbertson. The Expedition 1 crew of NASA astronaut William M. Shepherd, and Yuri P. Gidzenko and Sergei K. Krikalev of Roscosmos celebrated the first Thanksgiving aboard the International Space Station on Nov. 23, 2000, three weeks after their arrival aboard the facility. The crew took time out of their busy schedule to enjoy ham and smoked turkey and send words of thanks to people on the ground who provided excellent support to their flight. Crews have celebrated Thanksgiving in space every November since then. In 2001, Expedition 3 crew members NASA astronaut Frank L. Culbertson, and Vladimir N. Dezhurov and Mikhail V. Tyurin of Roscosmos enjoyed the first real Thanksgiving aboard the space station, complete with a cardboard turkey as decoration. The following year’s orbital Thanksgiving celebration included the largest number of people to that time, the combined 10 crewmembers of Expedition 5, STS-113, and Expedition 6.  After a busy day that included the first Thanksgiving Day spacewalk aboard the space station, the crews settled down to a dinner of smoked turkey, mashed potatoes, and green beans with mushrooms. Blueberry-cherry cobbler rounded out the meal. Thanksgiving 2008. Left: The Thanksgiving dinner reheating in space shuttle Endeavour’s food warmer. Right: The crews of Expedition 18 and STS-126 share a meal in the space shuttle middeck. Expedition 18 crew members NASA astronauts E. Michael Fincke and Gregory E. Chamitoff and Yuri V. Lonchakov representing Roscosmos, welcomed the STS-126 crew of NASA astronauts Christopher J. Ferguson, Eric A. Boe, Heidemarie M. Stefanyshyn-Piper, Donald R. Pettit, Stephen G. Bowen, R. Shane Kimbrough, and Sandra H. Magnus during Thanksgiving in 2008. They dined in the space shuttle Endeavour’s middeck on smoked turkey, candied yams, green beans and mushrooms, cornbread dressing and a cranapple dessert.  Thanksgiving 2009. Left: Crew members from Expedition 21 and STS-129 share an early Thanksgiving meal. Right: The Thanksgiving dinner for the Expedition 21 and STS-129 crews. The following year saw the largest and an internationally diverse group celebrating Thanksgiving in space. The six Expedition 21 crew members, NASA astronauts Jeffrey N. Williams and Nicole P. Stott, Roman Y. Romanenko and Maksim V. Suraev of Roscosmos, Frank L. DeWinne of the European Space Agency, and Robert B. Thirsk of the Canadian Space Agency hosted the six members of the STS-129 crew, NASA astronauts Charles O. Hobaugh, Barry E. Wilmore, Michael J. Foreman, Robert L. Satcher, Randolph J. Bresnik, and Leland D. Melvin. The twelve assembled crew members represented the United States, Russia, Belgium, and Canada. The celebration took place two days early, since the shuttle undocked from the space station on Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving 2010. Left: Expedition 25 commander and NASA astronaut Scott J. The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983)
Tumblr media
Unexpectedly, it isn’t the mystery that’s the highlight of The Hound of the Baskervilles; it's the cast. Ian Richardson, in particular, stands out as one of the interpretations of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective.
When an ancient family curse in the form of a ghostly hound frightens Sir Charles Baskerville (David Langton) to death, Sherlock Holmes (Richardson) and Dr. John Watson (Donald Churchill) investigate. His sole heir, Sir Henry (Martin Shaw) now fears for his life. An unbeliever in the supernatural, Holmes turns his attention to the other inhabitants of the Baskerville House,.
I've read a fair amount of Sherlock Holmes' adventures and seen some of the more notable adaptations. Not knowing the mystery behind The Hound of the Baskervilles, I found it entertaining to solve. As a film, it isn't air-tight, largely due to the amount of screentime given to the various suspects. Based on this, you can, unfortunately, sort of figure out who is most likely to be the culprit. Big thriller/detective movie fans may see the ending coming (I didn’t). Even if you do, it’s an entertaining mystery with enough red herrings, side plots and puzzling clues to keep you invested in the 101 minute running time.
For those who already know this tale, it's worth seeing for Ian Richardson as Sherlock Holmes. Not only does the man have the look - particularly in the face, which isn't too handsome, is easily disguised and has a sharp gleam of intelligence in his eyes - he’s also a great actor. He feels like an actual detective running circles among everyone else, including the audience. Don't be surprised if he becomes your new mental image when you hear the name "Sherlock Holmes". Considering the many stereotypical phrases and mannerisms you'll see him display, I suspect that's already the case. Also noteworthy is Donald Churchill as Watson, whose charms contain that right mix of intelligence and bewilderment faced with Holmes’ skills. He makes for a good avatar for the audience. While you'll enjoy the mystery, it’s these actors whom you'll really remember.
If you’re a fan of Sherlock Holmes - and you should be - The Hound of the Baskervilles is certainly worth a look. Its only true flaw is that it never explode off the screen, or blow your mind like you'd expect a film featuring the legendary detective would. It’s perfectly good entertainment with a fantastic cast. (On DVD, July 3, 2014)

who’s interested in a little science experiment? spooky tuesday is a new podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.
it’s the age old question: at what point exactly in his brundlefly transformation does jeff goldblum transform from hot to.... not? on a new episode of spooky tuesday, cohosts monica, sydney, and chelsea are at odds as they argue about where the line is, but at least there’s one thing they can all agree on, and that’s that it would be an honor to be stepped on by all six feet on geena davis.
give spooky tuesday a listen on apple podcasts, spotify, iheart radio, or stitcher
