"Seven federal agencies are partnering to implement President Biden’s American Climate Corps, announcing this week they would work together to recruit 20,000 young Americans and fulfill the administration's vision for the new program.
The goals spelled out in the memorandum of understanding include comprehensively tackling climate change, creating partnerships throughout various levels of government and the private sector, building a diverse corps and serving all American communities.
The agencies—which included the departments of Commerce, Interior, Agriculture, Labor and Energy, as well the Environmental Protection Agency and AmeriCorps—also vowed to ensure a “range of compensation and benefits” that open the positions up to a wider array of individuals and to create pathways to “high-quality employment.”
Leaders from each of the seven agencies will form an executive committee for the Climate Corps, which Biden established in September, that will coordinate efforts with an accompanying working group. They will create the standards for ACC programs, set compensation guidelines and minimum terms of service, develop recruitment strategies, launch a centralized website and establish performance goals and objectives. The ACC groups will, beginning in January, hold listening sessions with potential applicants, labor unions, state and local governments, educational institutions and other stakeholders.
The working group will also review all federal statutes and hiring authorities to remove any barriers to onboarding for the corps and standardize the practices across all participating agencies. Benefits for corps members will include housing, transportation, health care, child care, educational credit, scholarships and student loan forgiveness, stipends and non-financial services.
As part of the goal of the ACC, agencies will develop the corps so they can transition to “high-quality, family-sustaining careers with mobility potential” in the federal or other sectors. AmeriCorps CEO Michael Smith said the initiative would prepare young people for “good-paying union jobs.”
Within three weeks of rolling out the ACC, EPA said more than 40,000 people—mostly in the 18-35 age range—expressed interest in joining the corps. The administration set an ambitious goal for getting the program underway, aiming to establish the corps’ first cohort in the summer of 2024.
The corps members will work in roles related to ecosystem restoration and conservation, reforestation, waterway protection, recycling, energy conservation, clean energy deployment, disaster preparedness and recovery, fire resilience, resilient recreation infrastructure, research and outreach. The administration will look to ensure 40% of the climate-related investments flow to disadvantaged communities as part of its Justice40 initiative.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said the MOU would allow the ACC to “work across the federal family” to push public projects focused on environmental justice and clean energy.
“The Climate Corps represents a significant step forward in engaging and nurturing young leaders who are passionate about climate action, furthering our journey towards a sustainable and equitable future,” Regan said.
The ACC’s executive committee will hold its first meeting within the next 30 days. It will draw support from a new climate hub within AmeriCorps, as well as any staffing the agency heads designate."

Runs from January 21st to January 27th, 2024
7 days of fanfiction appreciation for all our fandom writers!
Everyone from all corners of MCYTblr are welcome to participate. No matter how large or small your favorite SMP or creator is, there is a space for everyone.
Many fandom events focus on providing tasks for artists and writers, but very little are made with the people who enjoy and appreciate that work in mind as participants. Lurkers and enjoyers and love posters are just as important to the fandom, so this is a space for us to do our thing and spread the love 💗
How to Participate
There will be 3 kinds of planned activities hosted on this blog, but there is no single correct way to participate, as long you’re uplifting others. The activities and prompts are meant to be a guideline and source of inspiration. You don’t have to burn yourself out by participating every day or in every activity.
Keep this space positive and abide by standard fandom etiquette. Be mindful of tags and if you don’t think you’ll like a work, don’t click and read it!
Share the love; one goal of this challenge is to help authors who’ve been overlooked feel appreciated for their contribution to the fandom. If you’re up to it, try and use this challenge as a way to break from your comfort zone and uplift others who you haven’t seen get any attention yet.
Note: This doesn’t mean to not send love to any ‘bigger authors’ whose work you admire, and we are not entertaining any discourse related to the size of one’s following.
Use the tag ‘mcytfanficappreciationweek’ for your recommendation lists related to this event and we will reblog them here!
Activities
(Under the cut!)
Reading and Recommendation Challenge
Find a fic that fits the theme of the day and give it a read/comment! Then if you’re up for it, share the recommendation in a post on tumblr and use the event tag. You can make individual posts for each day, or create a wrap-up at the end of the week.
It is both allowed and encouraged to engage with fics whose authors don’t have any linked social media presence. This is not exclusive to authors on tumblr.
January 21st (Day 1: Something New)
Read and comment on a fic written by an author whose work you’ve never commented on before
January 22nd (Day 2: Hidden Gems)
Read and comment on a fic that currently has no comments
Or, feel free to share and recommend a fic whose only comment is your own
January 23rd (Day 3: Underrated Blorbos)
Read and comment on a fic centered on a character of whom you’ve never read as a main POV (the less fics the character is tagged in, the better!)
January 24th (Day 4: Rarepair Extravaganza)
Read and comment on a fic with a character relationship tag (that’s central to the fic, no cheating with ensembles!) that has less than 500 tagged works
For fandoms with <1000 works, use 50 tagged works as a threshold (or your best judgment)
For fandoms with <100 works, use 5 tagged works as a threshold (or your best judgment)
Can be either romantic (using the “/”) or platonic (using the “&”)
January 25th (Day 5: A Blast from the Past)
Read and comment on a fic that was last updated before 2023 (complete or in progress!)
January 26th (Day 6: Canon? Who is she?)
Read and comment on a fic with any ‘Alternate Universe’ tag of your choosing
Canon divergent fics or split timelines count!
January 27th (Day 7: Procrastination Termination)
Read and comment on a fic that you’ve had ‘saved for later’ or opened in a new tab but never got to reading
Or, finish catching up to a multichapter fic that you fell behind on and comment on it
Author Interaction
Send authors who are active on tumblr questions about their work! Ideas/prompts for each day are written below.
January 21st (Day 1: Something New)
Ask an author about future writing projects or ideas that still only exist in their head
January 22nd (Day 2: Hidden Gems)
Ask an author about one of their least-kudosed fics
January 23rd (Day 3: Underrated Blorbos)
Ask an author about something they’re excited or passionate about
January 24th (Day 4: Rarepair Extravaganza)
Ask an author about one of their favorite ships (romantic or just a platonic relationship!)
January 25th (Day 5: A Blast from the Past)
Ask an author about past fandoms they may have participated in or their journey as a fic writer in general
January 26th (Day 6: Canon? Who is she?)
Ask an author about an AU or headcanon of theirs
January 27th (Day 7: Procrastination Termination)
Ask an author about their writing process
Love Posting
Too shy to reach out to someone you admire directly? Write them an anonymous message in our inbox and we will post it and tag their blog for you! (Please be sure to include their blog name so we know who to tag).
Note: If we suspect that your message is back-handed or being hateful towards another group in the community, it will be deleted. If you believe your message was deleted in error, feel free to send this blog a DM about it.
And finally…. If you are an author remember that even if you don’t receive a message or new readers during the course of this event, you are still a valued member of this community. With the size of our fandom, it is impossible to give every single author their due recognition. You are appreciated for your contribution to this fandom, and every fic that is written makes our fandom a more vibrant, wonderful place to be. We love you for the time and effort you put in the art of your creation and we are privileged that you choose to share it for us to enjoy!

hi freya! your work with the TLB series is phenomenal and truly a gift to my life! do you have any advice for first time book planning/outlining, specifically in the realm of historical fiction?
oh boy. I rely on two guidelines for my planning process, and they are absolutely NOT historical fiction specific, but you can have them anyway:
make the romance (if there's a central one) more or less follow the romancing the beat structure, which is both simple and very flexible.
a structure-for-dummies version of four act structure, which boils down to deciding early on three key landmarks:
at the 25 % mark, something happens which commits the characters fully to the story, whatever that is.
at the 50% mark, something major happens which twists the direction and shape of the story - new key information is revealed, the second body is found, first sex scene, whatever.
at the 75% mark, the story tips towards crisis/disaster/the lowest emotional point.
...then I try to sketch out a dot point list of a roughly equal number of scenes to take place on either side of each of these (these are the four acts). this is how I make pacing work as early as the first draft, when I have very little innate sense of pacing and I detest doing structural edits.
ALSO: start as late as possible in the story (have the main inciting incident take place within the first scene) and finish as early as possible (diana wynne jones is particularly excellent at this; I will sometimes bend this rule if an epilogue is expected, but my PERSONAL opinion is that for the most part You Don't Need That Epilogue).
this may be helpful for you, or it may be no help at all. most writers discover what balance of planning/not planning works for them via trial and error. good luck!

Masterlist & Intro
Welcome! My name is Sky. I'm 19! My guidelines are simple. Minors must NOT interact with anything that has (nsfm) as a warning in this blog. Thank you so much for respecting that boundary :)
This blog is mostly a place where I'll post my works for multiple fandoms depending on what mood I'm in lol or what inspires me!
Here is a list of the character/fandoms I'll most definitely write for (if you would like, please feel free to request something and I'll try and write it)
- Conrad Fisher - The Summer I Turned Pretty
STARLIGHT - You've always felt inadequate compared to Belly, but it's possible you never had a reason to.
DIRTY LITTLE SECRET - When Conrad Fisher catches his secret girlfriend masturbating, he loses his mind. SMUT (nsfm)
- Kaz Brekker - Six Of Crows/Shadow and Bone
WEAKNESS - Kaz Brekker isn't insecure…
- James Potter - Harry Potter/Marauders era
KING OF MY HEART - You and James are friends with benefits until daisies and an incident with one asshole Quidditch player stirs up some hidden (or not-so-hidden) feelings.
MAROON - James usually doesn't like violence but he'll fight anyone who bad-mouths his girlfriend.
LAVENDER HAZE - Having a thing for your best friend's dad was your dirty little secret. Up until it wasn't so secret anymore. SMUT (nsfm)
THIS LOVE - Sometimes your lovely boyfriend can have a hard time with the word 'no'.
HOW YOU GET THE GIRL- You've never had your first kiss — well not until you stupidly kiss the boy you've had a crush on since forever, the same boy who happens to be your best friend.
FOOLISH ONE - James was and would never be yours.
TIMELESS - James wants to take you out to one of his families' fancy parties. However, he underestimates how cruel people can be when someone is different.
*** related: muggle!reader ***
ENCHANTED pt.1 - Three weeks after his devastating break up with Lily, James wanted Remus and Sirius to bring him to a muggle bar in central London.
SWEETER THAN FICTION pt.2 - After months of dating, James finally tells you he's a wizard.
***
YOU ARE IN LOVE - You never realized how much of an idiot your brother's best friend is until he becomes jealous.
GLITCH - You never intended to admit you would fuck James Potter. You hate him. Well, turns out you hate him a little less when he's touching you in ways you'd only dreamed of. SMUT (nsfm)
WILDEST DREAMS - Finding out that your ex-best friend might have smelt you in the Amortentia feels as surreal as you smelling him.
INVISIBLE STRING - When you're having cramps, your boyfriend doesn't even think of shying away from helping you in anyway he can.
STAY BEAUTIFUL- When you overhear some of James's friends comment on your weight, James comforts you.
SANTA BABY - James wants to make his family's Christmas special.
SNOW ON THE BEACH - When your eleven-year-old son comes home for Christmas break in tears, you and James are instantly worried.
NEW ROMANTICS - When your "friends" play a dangerously stupid prank on you, James is the last person you'd think would help you.
COLD AS YOU - You want your boyfriend's attention again.
I THINK HE KNOWS - Your boyfriend promises to watch over you when you want to get drunk. SMUT (nsfm)
BEGIN AGAIN - James has been persuing you for years and you've never said yes, until now?
END GAME - Playing Quidditch against your secret boyfriend is usually fun…
GOLD RUSH - You're a stupid drunk and James Potter is very very bad at dealing with his romantic feelings.
DAYLIGHT - When your boyfriend finds out he didn't make you come, his anger quickly turns into lust. SMUT (nsfm)
THE ALCOTT - You love James but he loves Lily. It's simple… until it isn't so simple anymore.
• Sirius Black
• Remus Lupin
• Poly!Marauders
- Tangerine - Bullet Train
| Tan blurb - seeing him gradually lose clothing items on the train
MASTERMIND - Since the mission in Tokyo, you wanted Tangerine out of your life as soon as possible. Instead, he stormed back in to save you from yourself.
DRESS - Your best friends promised never to tell you about their dangerous job. However, all goes to shit when you find out another way.
NO BODY, NO CRIME - You meet a sexy, dangerous, stranger on a train. And he somehow ends up kidnapping you?
HITS DIFFERENT - You and Tangerine discover you love sucking on his fingers. SMUT (nsfm)
CALL IT WHAT YOU WANT - After accidentally killing your kidnappers, the twins—especially Tangerine—seem determined to keep you away from harm.
DON'T BLAME ME - You've been the Twins' handler for years now, and when Tangerine blows up at you one evening after a mission, he apologizes in an unconventional way. SMUT (nsfm)
LABYRINTH- When you go to steal a silver case from the Twins, they quickly realize you're under duress.
- Alexei Vronsky - Anna Karenina
MY SUNSHINE - When Alexei brought you a kitten, he didn't think you would spend your entire time with her.
- Sergei Kravinoff - Kraven The Hunter
YOU ALL OVER ME - You meet a dangerous stranger in the woods. SMUT (nsfm)

pairing: dad!bucky barnes x au pair!reader
warnings: age gap (reader is 10 years younger than bucky), smut (18+, dni if under 18)
summary: bucky and y/n decide what is and isn’t a boundary.
masterlist
Bucky thought that after becoming a father he’d magically turn into a responsible adult. One of those adults in every single movie, every single TV show, that somehow has their shit together and always has wise words to offer the young generation. That’s what’s supposed to happen, right? He was supposed to play his playboy days behind him and step into the father role armed with dad jokes and infinite wisdom - instead, he was lusting after the woman he hired to take care of his daughter. It was almost comical, straight out of a gossip magazine, the dad wanting to sleep with the babysitter. He’d never thought of her that way. At least he was sure he’d never thought of her that way. Sure she was beautiful, that had never gone lost on him, but she was his employee and as an employer he had certain guidelines he had to follow. He was certain if the HR lady was here she’d be lecturing him on how he should stop staring at Y/N’s breasts through the thick sweater she was now wearing. How come the sweater was getting him as riled up as the see through T-shirt? It was if she was tempting him, looking all domestic, holding his child by her hip while finishing supper. The universe was tempting him.
All his mind could focus on was that memory of her, soaking yet standing in front of him. Nothing had been hidden from him, from the shape of her supple breasts to the colour of her underwear. It made him want to take her to his bed, peel the pesky garments off and feel her skin against his. Just the mere thought of it had his blood boil and his trousers fell suddenly tighter. He needed to get out of here, he needed to get out of here before she noticed anything.
      - I’m gonna go. - he spoke out before his brain could compute his words. All he knew for sure is he needed to get away from her, get away from the thought of her body flush against his, or how her lips would feel against his skin.
      - Are you gonna be back soon? - even her voice was tempting. When did she become a temptress? - Sergeant Barnes?
     - I don’t know.
He closed the door a bit more harshly than he should but this was a condition he didn’t want her seeing him in. He also certainly didn’t want his daughter to further question him on why his heart was beating faster or why he was red. He needed to get away from it all. He needed to have sex, that’s what he needed to do. Honestly, he couldn’t recall the last time he’d actually had sex. If he wasn’t busy at work, he was at home spending time with Sadie. That had to be it, he was having this thoughts about his au pair because he was horny. That was it. At least that’s what he convinced himself as he walked into a bar.
He knew he should feel guilty, or at least he should feel some slight shame for what he was about to do. However, it wasn’t as if Bucky ever lied to any of the women he slept with. They knew what this was - a one night stand in an expensive hotel room. He made it clear from the start and today that’s just what he needed.
That’s how he found himself in a hotel in central New York, deep inside the woman whose red dress had caught his attention the moment he stepped into the bar. This was just what he needed. Looking at her face, he studied her features, noticing just the way her hair fell, her cheeks flushed as he continued to pound into her. Her moans were music to his ears, the more she moaned, the more his grip grew on her hips, chasing his own high. He knew he should help her finish, he really did but he just needed to get off, he needed to get this sexual frustrations off. It made him sick to his stomach when he considered that deep down he was using this woman for his own benefit, but he reckoned she was getting something out of it too.
He looked back at his girl’s face and perhaps it was a mix of alcohol or maybe he lack of sleep but her face started morphing into someone else ... the someone else. He should’ve been ashamed, imagining his daughter’s au pair in place of someone else but once it was in his mind, he couldn’t stop anymore. His pace grew faster as his grip tighter as he pictured her, writing and moaning under him until he came undone.
(...)
The morning came like a bad alarm. The girl was long gone and perhaps it was for the best as he was certain that at some point he must’ve moaned out Y/N’s name. She probably thought he was pathetic and maybe he was as he couldn’t even remember what that woman’s name was. He rubbed his face off sleep, he needed to get back to his daughter and based on the amount of calls he had from Y/N, he reckoned she was about to finish writing all her essay about how disappointed she was in him. He dreaded walking past that door, he just knew Y/N was gonna berate him for not telling Sadie goodnight or sit through another three hours of Bluey.
     - Sergeant Barnes. - he heard her voice before he saw her and he wished he hadn’t seen her in that moment. She walked in wearing a white dress, carrying Sadie against her hip. - I’m gonna be late. I’ve fed Sadie and we’ve gone through bath time. I need to go.
       - Where are you going? - where are you going looking like that? The dress was light, flowing around at any and every movement and hugging her breasts in a way which made him wonder if she had it made specifically for her.
       - I asked for the day off remember? - she handed him Sadie who was busy paying attention to the tablet. - I’ll be back either tonight or tomorrow.
He found his words stuck in his throat but before they could actually say anything, she was already out the door. That had to be a date, that was a date outfit. That was a trying to impress a guy outfit and he didn’t know why he was so bothered. She was a beautiful, young woman and it was natural for her to go out and date. She deserve someone nice who wined and dined her and while part of him was happy for her, the other part kinda wanted to have been able to take her on a date. He knew the best places in town, he could get her places someone else couldn’t and then he could end the night in ways that she could only read on the dirty books she tried to hide whenever he caught her reading. Yet, part of him wondered if maybe all these thoughts were due to his sexual frustration. He thought she was attractive, yes, but he didn’t dwell on any underlying feelings. It was just lust, right?
      - No Sadie, don’t eat the marker. - his daughter took his mind off Y/N thankfully.
      - Grape.
      - It’s grape coloured, not grape flavoured. - he took the marker away from Sadie. - Do you want some grapes?
      - No. - she shrugged, grabbing another marker to continue painting.
      - What are you drawing there, Sisi? - he asked, taking a more comfortable seat next to his daughter.
      - Daddy ... - she pointed at a blue stick figure and then to a pink stick figure and red stick figure. - Me, mummy.
      - Mummy? - his throat dried up. He thought he still had time or at least more time until he had to figure out how he’d explain to Sadie that her mum is a deadbet who only hits him up when she needs money.
      - Mummy. - she shrugged and continue to paint.
      - Do you want a mummy?
      - No. I have mummy. - she said as if the was the simplest answer to the most simple question.
     - You have a mummy?
     - Y/N. - she looked at him for a second before returning to her dress. - Teacher said mummy loves you and Y/N loves me.
He chose to stay silent this time. She was two years old, going on three, there was no use in pushing this issue further and if Bucky was being honest, he didn’t want to push it either. Telling Sadie about her mum was something he hoped to do when she was a little bit older and could, much to his dismay and sadness, understand the true nature of some people. Right now she was a baby, his baby, and he couldn’t bare the thought of destroying whatever innocent notions she had. It was better she thought that - that all someone needed to become a parent was love, at least until she was younger.
He moved closer to his daughter, kissing the top of her head as she happily continued on her drawing. He teased her about making him too short or even why he couldn’t pick the colour, but eventually, the two had the drawing pinned to the fridge door with a magnet of a past holiday. The rest of the day was uneventful, with Sadie mostly running around with her toys and having fun with different things she found around the house until he had to tackle bath time. No wonder Y/N had gotten soaked to the skin, trying to bath Sadie was almost a war sport and he had actually been to war. Eventually, he got her into bed, tucking her in with several of her plushies and reading her favourite book before lights were off except for the small moon night light.
He took the opportunity to spend the time without his daughter to catch up on some work, spread over his couch while his laptop laid over his lap. The words meshed together with sentences as he read through contract after contract, one no more different than the other. The repetitiveness of the contracts had him slowly drifting in and out of sleep until he was napping. However, that nap was soon interrupted by the door closing. He was immediately back to his senses, ready to take down whatever threat may have trespassed. Luckily for him, it was only Y/N coming back in. Unluckily for him, she didn’t look particularly happy, at least she hadn’t looked happy as once she looked at him it was a if she did a 180 and immediately looked her regular happy go lucky self.
     - Is Sadie asleep? - she tucked her hair behind her ear, looking around to see if the little girl was anywhere.
     - She’s asleep. Been down for about two hours now.
     - Oh ... uhm .... Is there anything you need me to do?
     - I thought you weren’t gonna come back today. - he closed his laptop. - Bad date?
     - A bad date would’ve been better than what happened. - she walked towards the kitchen to grab herself a glass of water.
     - Jesus, how bad could the guy have been? - he followed her like a baby duck, taking a seat in front of the kitchen counter. - You were so confident this morning, I thought you would come back in a messier state.
     - What are you talking about, Sergeant Barnes? - she rolled her eyes.
     - Come on. From this morning alone, I thought you were gonna get laid or something. Follow my advice from our last conversation.
     - Oh ... - realisation dawned on her. - I didn’t go on a date. I went to my friend’s engagement party.
Was it terrible that he was happy she hadn’t gone on a date? She had clearly looked like something had upset her, yet he was celebrating the fact she wasn’t sleeping with someone behind his back. Behind his back? She’s not his girlfriend. She would be sleeping with someone, point.
     - Going to an engagement party as the last single girl is a challenge.
     - I’m sure there were plenty of groomsmen there ready to make you some company. It can’t be all bad.
     - It’s not even the idea of not getting married which upsets me. It’s the comments. Every single comment filled with pity as if I am losing sleep over being sleep. - she groaned. - It’s annoying.
     - Maybe they’re just wondering why such a catch is still out there. - he joked, getting a small smile out of her. - Good food, at least?
     - Not that kind of friend.
     - Why are you single anyway, Y/N?
     - Don’t you think that’s a bit personal?
     - You did flash me yesterday. I thought that meant there were no boundaries between us anymore.
     - I did not flash you. - she pointed at him. - Flashing you would’ve meant I intended for you to see me soaking wet.
Oh god, why did you say that? She thought to herself as the words faltered on her tongue, gaining a grin of victory from him.
     - I did not flash you. - she repeated. - You’re my boss that would’ve been inappropriate.
     - I’ll forgive your flasher behaviour if you forgive my question then.
     - I have to watch over Sadie and I have my studies to focus on. Do you think I can date on the one or two days off I get?
     - Now that’s not very good multitasking from you. I swore you told me during your interview that you were a good multitasker.
     - And I swore during my interview you said you’d warn me if something came up and you had to leave. Where did you go last night?
     - What about those boundaries we were discussing earlier?
     - If you get to query me on my personal life, so do I. Go on.
     - You don’t want to know.
     - Yes, I do. I answered your question and now you answer mine, it is only fair, Bucky.
     - Is it Bucky now?
     - Don’t change the topic. You ran out the room as if there was a fire, so tell me, what could’ve been so important?
     - Sex.
     - Oh ... - she looked flustered, not expecting that to be the answer. For whatever reason she thought it would’ve been something related to his company or maybe he just wanted to smoke as he usually did when he thought no one was watching. Although, looking back she realised that the later looked like the least likely option. - You had ... scheduled sex?
     - You think I schedule sex?
     - Did you just ... randomly felt like having sex and went out looking?
     - It’s not that hard, Y/N. You would know if you tried it.
     - How do you know I haven’t?
     - Based on the fact that I heard you touching yourself a few nights ago ... I’d say you haven’t.

HEADCANON FREE SPACE - GRIAN
from the response to this post
hi hello!! this post is a free space for people to come by and share their headcanons about a specific mcyt character, and this post is for grian!
Tumblr media
grian is like. one of those chars that are just headcanon central, so i thought it be appropriate to start with him
not-exactly-rules but some guidelines + my own headcanons under the cut!
- GO ABSOLUTELY NUTS!! share as MANY as you like, i literally don’t mind if you’re going to make a ten page essay about your headcanons. just go wild, just as long as it sticks to the character of this post! bc if it i do multiple characters on one post it might get overwhelming and messy
- you can either do it in the tags or you can just reblog and add to this, i don’t mind as long as it’s convenient for you! you can add to other people’s rbs but i do think it would be better if you rb it straight off this post, but that depends on you!!
- if you want to reblog with your design as well so you can explain your hcs, go ahead! i would absolutely love to see how people design the characters individually!!
i will probably make a masterpost for this but for now we’ll start humble, but i’m aiming to release one post per week, but maybe would speed it up if my schedule allows me!
so yea, go wild!
i will probably start with the life series peeps first but i am thinking of maybe doing qsmp peeps as well after!
my grian headcanons cause i wrote a whole thing in my notes app:
- in my hc, the forms of watchers are dream-like and amorphous, basically visual mindfucks in appearance. grian who was fairly new to the watchers still kept his regular human form, but those who have been watchers for a very long time eventually would lose their individual human identity, and is assimilated into the collective that are the watchers. grian, if give or take maybe a century, the same thing would have eventually happened to him.
- his wings, gifted to him when he was ‘taken’, are generally amorphous and shifting, and you can never focus what shape they’re supposed to be (they can give you a headache the longer you try to look at their genuine form), but he can disguise them in any shape he wants (bird wings, dragon wings, etc.) so it doesn’t hurt to look at them.
- grian cut off his association with them just several months after he was taken, joining hermitcraft not long after, estranging themselves from them.
- he can still use his powers (which include astral projection, and etc.), but because of his cut ties they’re significantly weaker than the average watcher. for example, watchers can ‘watch’ over an entire server, but grian can only ‘watch’ one person at a time.
- his reasons for not wanting to be assimilated into the watchers is that he knows what it’s like to have been pushed and forced to take up a role against his will (ahem high school ahem), and it’s hurt him and he won’t want to let it hurt him again. aside from that, he finds that the watchers are extremely boring, considering all they do is observing passively from the sidelines and all that, which is the complete opposite of how grian likes to operate. he finds it extremely restrictive and prevents him from actively participating in things. not wanting to be confined to that, he cut ties with them.
- however he still uses his powers for troublemaking and mischief, and also to help others when they need it. he doesn’t consider himself affiliated with the watchers because he thinks it’s merely some godly title and also because he wouldn’t want anyone to think him differently, so he doesn’t really hide it.
- as he denied his watcher status very early into joining them, he still has the physicality (stamina, energy and such) of a regular human. only his wings are amorphous instead of his entire form since his wings were given to him when he joined them.
- made the life smp as a fun game for his friends, but in my hc, they did a test run before starting 3rd life. it was during that test run when the watchers seized control over the server.
- during 3rd life, he put admin restrictions on himself to remove his wings so he couldn’t fly and it was fair game for the rest.

Before we open contributor applications, the mods would like to answer questions raised through responses from the Interest Check and expand upon our carrd’s guidelines/FAQ.
If you are potentially considering applying for the zine as a contributor, please take the time to look over this post and read the carrd.
Zine’s Themes:
For our second zine, we decided to have a centralized theme for the overall project: investigation. Solving mysteries, puzzles, and problems are key elements of Remedy games. All pieces featured within the zine will focus on these ideas.
The Oceanview is a connecting point between the Alan Wake and Control universes. It is a place of power individuals pass through on their way to somewhere else, so it’s had many guests over the years. However, pitches for the zine do not have to feature the Oceanview, they can involve different settings featured or referenced in these games, excluding the Oldest House.
Interest Check Feedback
During the interest check, we received several common questions we would like to address:
Can we submit pitches related to Alan Wake?
Yes, as both Alan Wake and Control both fall under the Remedy-verse, we want the zine to have a diverse spread of content featuring characters and themes from both games.
Are Alan Wake 2 spoilers allowed?
The zine will release a year after the first game, so we will be allowing content featuring spoilers. All pieces with spoilers will have a warning tag in the zine’s table of contents, allowing consumers to pick and choose what content to enjoy.
Are meta/theory-crafting pitches allowed?
No, the zine will only be featuring fanart and fanfiction.
What about lore related documents such as dossiers/letters/case files etc?
Yes. As with our previous zine, in-universe documentation is welcome so long as it fits the zine’s themes and criteria.
Can I submit something which has already been posted to social media?
No, all contributors must submit a new, original piece of content never shared before.
Is there any specific content which will not be allowed in the zine?
We will not be accepting typewritten, out of context manuscript pages. If a typewritten manuscript page from Alan happens to be one part of your overall story, that’s fine.
No pieces featuring places found within the Oldest House. As much as we love the Astral Plane, the Quarry, and the Clocks Threshold, we want the zine to feature many of the other interesting settings within this universe!
All art pieces must be polished lineart or equivalent. We will not accept sketches.
Pitch Process
Please do NOT submit pitches that state “I’ll draw/write anything” – these will be automatically rejected.
Please submit three detailed pitches. Include any characters or ships featured in the piece along with the general idea. Give us the elevator pitch.
If you’re pitching a piece featuring shipping content, please state the overall plot of the piece. The mods will not be accepting stories that do not take into account the zine’s investigative themes.
All art pieces will need to have a background. No negative white space will be allowed.
The mods will be trying to diversify the zine’s content through the provided pitches. Of your three pitches, the mods will select what pitch to move forward with based on the zine’s tentative content spread, so please make sure these pitches are something you are passionate about and willing to create.
Collaboration and the Creation Process
Remedy fans are a passionate bunch. Love for these games is shown in each and every creative work. And just like Remedy collaborates to bring us these amazing games, we are looking for that same dedication for the Oceanview Guestbook zine.
We would like each of our applicants to feel comfortable collaborating with both the mods as well as their fellow contributors. We will be encouraging contributors to share WIPs with each other through more organized check-ins to receive feedback. With each phase of the creation process, the mods will provide detailed feedback and constructive critique with each individual contributor.
Our primary mode of communication will be through Discord. The mods will be available should contributors need any assistance, to communicate any unforeseen circumstances, or to answer questions which may arise throughout the creation process.
Final Notes
The mods are fans of the Remedy universe and love the games. We want to talk and create with fellow fans. This project is for the community, and we can’t underscore that enough. This is why our previous and next zine are digital and free. We don’t want to hide the fanworks behind a paywall. This unofficial project is made for fans by fans as a labor of love.
We hope you’ll join us on this journey!

Livable Streets in China
Tumblr media
In 2019, there were almost one billion passenger-trips on public transit in the US. This is roughly the same number as that of Tianjin, a city in China with only 13 million people. China as a whole has more than this, the USA's total yearly number of passenger-trips, every single day. Evidently, when it comes to transit infrastructure, China's doing something right.
I'll note that I'm only talking about urban transit, here - China's vast high-speed railway network is already well discussed, and fills a space occupied, in the US, by domestic airline flights. When it comes to urban public transport, China is king. China has the longest metro system in the world, in Shanghai, with 400 stations and 800 kilometers of track. China also has the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth longest metro systems - in fact, the only metro system in the top ten not in China is the Moscow Metro, built by the USSR - and half the size of Shanghai's.
Still, there's room for improvement! The Central Urban Work Conference convened in 2015, the first since the beginning of opening up, marked a paradigm shift in urban design. China's qualitative change, from a rural to an urban country, is a recent transition, and it takes time for its effects to equalise. Before discussing the most advanced leaders of China's urban drive towards livable streets - which are literally tearing up highways to build parks instead - it might be useful to get a broader view.
Tumblr media
The city of Zhuzhou, in Hunan province, is a small, third-tier city of only a million people. Being a third-tier city, its situation is different from the first- and second-tier cities, who developed, and have been strongly introduced to, new urban design paradigms. The city's rapid motorisation impacted the vitality of its urban centre, deterring street-front social interaction and general livability. The city government considered this a large issue, and began moving funds away from highways and road expansions, and towards the renovation of smaller streets. Now, for context, in this scenario of unchecked motorisation, 78% of Zhuzhou's residents still travel by walking, cycling, and taking public transit.
When it came to Zhuzhou's approach to these issues, it was one that comprised of many approaches touted internationally. Streets are thinned, and given chicanes to reduce car speed. Drivers are able to see their speed more clearly on thinner streets, and, psychologically, feel unsafe driving at high speeds. Sharp corners and dog-legs are built onto streets, to physically ensure slower speeds, especially at intersections and crossings. Slip lanes are removed, and islands are added to pedestrian crosswalks. Pedestrian crossings, rather than dipping down into the street, remain level, physically forcing cars to slow down as they make their way up, like a speed bump, and enforcing the perception that the cars are infringing into a pedestrian space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some approaches were more unique, and integrated building design. Part of the city's design manual focused on the somewhat-common but less discussed feature, of aspect ratio - the vertical height of buildings for a given horizontal space, important for avoiding the depressing, flat expanses of tarmac that make up US sprawl. Another focused on the integration of pedestrian overpasses and underpasses into buildings, and the enforcement of building overhangs and arcades that provide a sheltered space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are the changes put into motion in third-tier cities, meeting and exceeding the beacons of urban design often presented in the west. When it comes to first-tier cities like Shanghai, the award-winning Shanghai Street Design Guidelines are realising advanced, human-centred urban design for greater numbers of people than ever before.

Drafting the Adventure: Wilderness and Exploration
For a game with exploration as one of it’s “core pillars”, d&d is kinda shit at producing gameplay conducive to actually making players feel like they’re exploring. If you play it by the book travelling from point A to B often feels like a slog, and a good number of groups are completely justified in skipping it entirely and just getting to the good bits. I think the problem largely stems from trying to cram the hexcrawl/westmarches style of gameplay from d&d’s heyday into the central gameplay loop when really it should be the focus of very particular kinds of adventure. Think of a big exploration adventure the same way you’d run a heist or murder mystery, usually a one off unless you’re running a specialized campaign.
With that said, the base rules for hanging out in the wilderness are IMO in massive need of an overhaul, so we might as well overhaul those along with setting up a good guidelines for running an exploration based adventure. Before we dive under the hood and get into all those storybuilding steps and mechanics, lets look at how my system works from the players’ perspective:
In lieu of any urgent quests or fantastic job offers, a group of adventurers decide they’re going to explore the wilderness outside their settlement and look for some opportunities.
One character chats up the locals, hearing rumours of what might be going on outside the walls. The second does some research on the area and finds a few trustworthy maps to copy. Another checks the local bountyboard for outlaws and monsters it might pay to hunt down.
The party sets out, and the DM asks the party which player wants to be the group’s surveyor: keeping a list of what places the party has visited, what options are available to them, and what might need a bit more exploration.
The DM has divided the area they’re exploring into zones with names like “The forbidden peaks” or “ The merry meadows” which gives each area a strong geographic identity and makes it easy for the party to remember and gives them an idea of what to expect.
Every time the party walks into a new zone, they learn the area’s name, and how many “points of interest” are in that region. A point of interest could be anything from a unique environmental detail to the lead in to an encounter to a monster lair to the entrance to a whole dungeon. The surveyor keeps track of these points of interest, making space to write in whatever details they think are relevant.
Likewise upon entering into a new zone, the party are made aware of “landmarks” striking points of interest that are obvious to the naked eye and don’t need to be searched for. Because this group prepared before they left, they’ll likely have learned of a few more points of interest in the region based off the information they gathered.
When the party have fully explored a point of interest, the DM tells the surveyor to check off the name of that location, indicating that it’s safe and that the party can turn their attention elsewhere
When deciding where to go next, the party has two options:  Set out for a specific area (one they know about or have visited before) or to Wander, poking around till they find a location they didn’t know about previously. The DM may ask for checks while the party is traveling based on the difficulty of reaching the point of interest or the particulars of the zone they’re travelling through.
Because the DM has been upfront with how many points of interest are in the zone, the party have an understandable goal of filling in a list and checking off each location. This feels like actual exploration because the party is actually making the decision of where to go and how deep to search, combining those key elements of choice and discovery that make setting out into the unknown so rewarding.
Below the cut I’m going to go into detail about how to BUILD an exploration adventure, everything from designing goals to fit your narrative needs to choosing what kind of points of interest to seed into the world .
First step: Setting Bounderies
When preparing a wilderness adventure, you’re going to settle on an area that the party is exploring and why: are they low level nobodies knocking about the countryside surrounding the starting village till the call to adventure finds them? Are they high level heroes looking to comb a vast wasteland for the location of a forgotten temple? Are they desperate survivors battling the elements as they attempt to find a pass through the deep wilderness? Obviously these will set the scale and tone of your adventure, but they’ll also help you define your boundaries: are your party moving towards a specific goal, or are they fucking around? Are they able to return to the comforts of civilization on the regular, or are they on their own? Is their exploration more of a self driven sandbox, or are they trying to find a route to a particular destination fellowship style.
Perhaps most importantly you need to ask: SHOULD this adventure be exploration focused? These sorts of adventures are a lot of work and if the party is only going to go through this region once you might be better served by just planning some encounters and pantomiming the idea of exploration in your narration.
Second step: Zoning it out
Now that you’ve settled on your region, you’re going to start cutting it up into Zones, large areas with a distinct geographic identity that will stick in your party’s mind: the area around a village might be divided by its cardinal points into fields, swamp, forest, and hills, able to be explored in any order, where as an attempt to cross the mountains might be separated into a sequence of 1) foothills 2) a choice between peaks OR caverns 3) river 4) lake. Obviously you’ll give each zone a striking name as you develop its theme that will help reinforce its identity by the time you present this to the party. I’d recommend three to six zones, as any more than that it gets hard to differentiate them from eachother.
Third step: Making lists
Now comes the fun part in designing your points of interest. I’ve found this is a two part process of brainstorming physical locations within each zone and determining what sort of encounters might happen there, though often times the latter comes before the former. It’s important to remember that an encounter is more than a fight, and fights are more than just face to face combat.  Here’s some ideas to get your brainstorming started:
Generally you’ll want atleast four and a maximum of twelve points of interest per zone ( though I tend to default to six) this is not only to prevent you from having to make too much content, but also to be able to use a die to determine what random point of interest the party finds when wandering. Every 2 locations they check off your list, decrease the die size.
Between landmarks and information that a party can gather through rumour/studying maps, I’d advise having no more than half your Zone’s content discoverable before the party actually starts wandering. This is to preserve the sense of the unknown which is vital to feeling like exploration means something.
Landmarks are like billboards drawing your party to particular content, ranging from natural features like hills or rivers to ruins or statues. Use them to deliver details the party should know about the zone early.
Trails or other signs of habitation are your friend, as they allow you to tease what an encounter MIGHT be without giving things away immediately; bandit ambushes, lost travellers, local wildlife, all of these could be at the end of a trail, but it’s far easier for you to bait the party with their own curiosity than come with an obvious “this place looks like a trap, do you want to step in it?”
When it actually comes to combat encounters, I’d advise balancing how challenging the encounter is with how much forewarning the party has. Ambushes they walk right into should be easy or very easy, while medium and hard encounters should either be opt in ( seeking out a beast in its lair) or avoidable ( hiding while the chimera circles overhead)
Points of interest can have many things to discover within them, such as frontier settlements, or Structures and Caverns which can be run as small dungeons.
Some locations may act as gateways into different zones. This is particularly useful for overland travel adventures where the party has to find the right point of interest to lead them on to the next phase of their journey.
For longer explorations it’s a good idea to include “safeholds”, places the party can use as a campsite rather than roughing it in the wilderness an being exposed to the elements or the threat of random encounters.
Puzzles and scavenger hunts are amazing activities at points of interest, especially if the party needs to go somewhere else in the zone/area to solve them.
Need to express that one particular point of interest ( or perhaps a whole zone) is difficult to traverse? Have the party roll con saves to avoid exhaustion/survival checks to find a better route. You can likewise do this with stealth checks to avoid the patrol routes of enemies or the hunting grounds of vicious predators.

Mark your calendars: REMADORA FEST COMING JANUARY 2024!
Though the poll results favored March, @remuslupinfest begins posting in March. It'll be best for creators to have enough time for both fests, so we're going first in January. If you are a writer/creator and plan to contribute to Remadora fest, please consider writing for Remus Lupin Fest as well! Pros include more Remus and Remadora goodness. Cons: nonexistent.
This will be the timeline for the Remadora Fest:
Prompting: opens 25 September and closes 25 October
Claiming: begins 31 October
Works due: 31 December
Posting: begins 3 January 2024
Under the cut you'll find guidelines on what the fest is looking for.
Fics must be a minimum of 1000 words. All ratings permitted. If/when there are more mature topics, content warnings are a must.
All visual art is accepted, with the exception of AI generated images. No AI artwork or writing is permitted.
All works for the fest must be new and must be able to stand alone. You can add sequels or prequels as you see fit, but the work itself must be able to stand as its own entity.
The works must be centered on Remus and Tonks's relationship. It can be told from others' perspectives but Remadora must be endgame. E.g. if you are planning to write a Remadora break-up fic, this may not be the fest for you.
This will be an anonymous fest. Works will be posted anonymously at first and author reveals will come at the end of the fest.
AUs are permitted. As long as Remadora is endgame and central to the work, you can shape the world as you see fit. (Ex: you can genderbend the characters, you can have Remus and Tonks be the same age, make it a Muggle AU, etc.)
This fest should be a welcoming space for everyone. The following will not be tolerated: bashing, harassment, bigotry, misogyny, transphobia, racism, and/or hate speech. Be kind.
If you have a question, send an ask.
We're looking forward to a smashing time! Please reblog and share!

Japanese New Age Cult Red Flags
Just like any religious community, Shintō and Buddhism are not free from harmful cults -- ranging from spiritual pyramid scheme groups to groups that purchase shrines and take over their administration.
For community benefit, I will list some key red flags, as these groups often post online and expand their following on social media. Please note that context should be paid attention to; use your judgement. If there are multiple traits present in a group, I highly suggest keeping your distance.
Focus on past lives. It is not wrong to believe in reincarnation, but claiming to be a reincarnation of a specific, usually powerful historical figure or kamisama/buddha etc. is an instant red flag.
Talk of Japanese being a secret lost tribe of Israel
Other, usually antisemitic and xenophobic conspiracy theories, including, but not limited to: The Star of David is the same as the kagome-mon. This type of behavior can build off of the same kind of conspiracy theories in the West; there are plenty of Qanon believers in the Japanese religious sphere, unfortunately.
Pseudohistory such as: speaking of the Hitsuki Shinji oracles as legitimate historical texts, or favoring Jindai Moji scripts.
Claims to reconstructed prehistorical Jōmon era religion - this can include some Koshintō movements, so again, use your judgement well.
Reliance on one figure as a central authority, especially when disregarding others.
Reliance on oracles and prophecies heard by one central figure
Putting down other sects or traditions
Circumventing ordainment/training for clergy
Talk of auras, "the spiritual" in a vague sense, referring to shrines and temples as "power spots" (some more normal folks do this last one, but that's because the influence of New Agers is actually pretty significant -- but it decenters the importance of kamisama in a shrine or buddhas/bodhisattvas etc. in a temple).
Focus on prehistoric shamanic queen Himiko, female kamisama and Ryūjin-sama (use your judgement wisely here). TERFy New Age cults exist in Japan as they do elsewhere, and this often is accompanied by focus on Himiko etc.
Overemphasis of shamanic elements of Shintō (while a historic truth, often endangers people with mental illness and lacks healthy balance)
Using nonprofit or charity-type locations that seem secular at a glance to recruit members (the infamous Aum Shinrikyō has two descendant cults which recruit through yoga classes)
Talk of ancient mother goddess worship (influenced by Western pseudohistory, a la Wicca)
Excessive focus on messages and signs from kamisama, usually in the context of shrine visits (this is not to say you cannot have signs, but rather that balance is necessary)
Damaging shrine property; hugging goshinboku
Ignoring or speaking over experts and clergy, especially when asked to stop
Informing other worshippers at a shrine that they are bowing, clapping wrong
Incorporating Western New Age or pagan practices
Focus on healing (with the common sense exception of kamisama or Jizō known for healing)
Suggesting or demanding you buy a product or service, especially for health conditions, job issues etc. There is a reason for the common trope of shady people selling expensive ceramic pots to people who are vulnerable.
Multiple members are romantically or sexually interested in or involved with the leader/central figure.
Recruitment either by lay members or from officials. This situation can be tricky, but most shrines no longer do this. Shrines with official worship groups will have posters and such, but will not prosletyze.
I will add to this list as I see fit. Please do not harass anyone, but rather use these guidelines to set safe boundaries around yourself when considering groups.

🌸Vlogs on Songkran🌸
While reading information about Songkran is useful, many Thai creators and vloggers walk us through Songkran in different parts of Thailand. Take a look at some of these videos to learn more!
What have we done in a provincial during Songkran? by ChawbanDoo
In this video, ChawbanDoo takes us through what he does in Singburi during Songkran. The vlog, which spans a few days, shows key components of Songkran, such as shopping and preparing for the holiday, bathing the Buddha image with nam ob, and water pouring with family members. Food is also central in this vlog: mu kratha and other dishes are shown. Finally, he pans to “playing Songkran,” which is him mostly watering his plants and then kids splashing cars with water.
Songkran Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand by Thailand Travel
youtube
Thailand Travel’s video is on Songkran 2023 in Chiang Mai. As described, the video “highlights… the colorful parades, traditional ceremonies, and playful water fights. The parade of Buddha statues is one of the most important activities in the Songkran Festival in Chiang Mai. People believe that throwing water on Buddha statues or others will bring good luck to Buddha statues, others and themselves.”
ก็มาศิวัช EP.1 เมื่อศิวัชเล่นมุขเสี่ยวเที่ยวสงกรานต์ (Episode 1 Vlog) by Mark Siwat
youtube
Mark’s first vlog, Gor Ma Siwat, takes place on Songkran Day 2019. The day begins with the water pouring ceremony with his family. Afterwards, Mark shops for a Songkran outfit, looking through several floral and Hawaiian shirts and, as he stresses, a waterproof bag for personal items. Finally, the blog ends with some tips for the water gun fights (and other antics) at Siam Square’s Songkran Festival.
Battle Trip | 배틀트립 – Ep.93 Songkran Water Festival VS Thingyan Festival by KBS WORLD TV
youtube
In this 2018 episode of Battle Trip, one team of travelers attends Songkran and the other attends the Thingyan Festival to see which is the superior festival. In the first half of the video, the team travels to Chiang Mai to join the water fights there. Other important details are highlighted here, such as transportation during the holiday, smaller shops being closed, how to refill water guns, shopping at markets, street vendors, etc.
Tawan the Wanderer, EP. 6 by GMMTV
youtube
GMMTV’s series Tawan the Wanderer has a 2019 episode dedicated to Songkran. The video opens with some basic information about the Thai New Year before transitioning to Tawan going to markets to get flowers for the temple and celebrations. The video includes Tawan near Wat Phra Singh (a prominent temple), conversations with people in Chiang Mai about the festivities, and Tawan’s family as they cook food and spend time together.

At this point you've written at least four different roleswap AUs, so I was wondering if you had any thoughts or takes about how a roleswap AU should be? - someone who's planning on making a roleswap AU
Please don't remind me. I'm embarrassed about this. I know I need to write other things. I don't know why the AU concept is so incredibly fun to write. I can't explain it. Roleswaps are very easy to write and a lot of fun and involve being a freak about everything. Who wouldn't write 10 of those bitches.
But yes, as someone whose roleswap AUs are like 9 out of her 51 fics, I feel qualified to talk about this. These are just my own opinions and takes, and other people might do it differently - if you write roleswaps too, feel free to add in your two cents!!
Before sitting down to write literally anything I always figure out the rules of the story. Writing is little more than a nonstop series of decisions, and if you abide by the rules of your story or characters then your decisions will be coherent and cohesive. By rules I don't mean worldbuilding - I mean the internal logic of the story and the characters. "X character will never explicitly say how he's feeling" or "the leads have to both win and lose every encounter".
I find establishing writing rules for roleswaps especially important - it's figuring out exactly how the roleswap works. Here are the ones that I find important, and kind of the process:
Decide what is swapped. Is it more of a universal swap, personality swap, backstory swap, chronology swap, or alignment swap? No matter which one you choose, all of these things are probably going to change anyway, but there has to be one central point for each character that guides your decisions. Are you actually swapping the narrative role in the story, or are you just changing it? You have to be really precise and have a very good idea of what exactly is swapped, and it has to be consistent throughout the story. It can't just (just) work on what you'd like to see, it has to be exactly the same between characters.
Decide the point of divergence. Sometimes that point is pretty abstract (She's a teenager in the 90s instead of the 20s). Sometimes it's much more specific, just one moment (He developed his superpowers at this moment instead of that). The point doesn't have to be immediately obvious, but you should know it - I did a backstory swap ages ago, and it seemed like a complete change, but like 150k in I dropped that a character dropped out of the police academy instead of completing it and that her entire life changed from there. If the swap is more abstract, then maybe it's just a series of smaller decisions - character A has these seminal points in his story, and I'm swapping him with character B, so here's what character B did during these seminal points instead, and how it changed him and his narrative.
Decide who the character is. This might be more personal, but for me, I think of the character as...there is a central tenet of them, of who they are as a person, that does not change no matter what. That's three or four traits of who they are, that you will not change, and that's what makes their swapped life their own instead of the OG dude's. But there's a lot of traits and behaviors around that core personality that's the result of their environment, backstory, and experiences. That's what should change. It's about figuring out how these essential traits + what is swapped + the point of divergence = an entirely different character and story. The roleswap you'll end up with will be a combination of all of these things: how the essential aspects of a character mix with what's swapped to create an entirely new environment and set of behaviors, which cause a chain reaction to create something new. As a writer, you sit down and say, "I'm keeping these parts of the character, I'm swapping out those parts, this new mix changes these points in their backstory, this results in this new person".
This is more of a guideline, but it's the most important to me: your characters have to be recognizable as the character. The reader shouldn't go, "this OC is making some weird choices". The reader should go, "I don't know how, because he's the exact opposite of his canon self in every possible way, but somehow he still feels like my favorite character". This is why you isolate those basic traits before changing the rest - so long as your character is still who they are deep inside, then they still feel like that character. And that's the fun of the story. You're selling something insane, and the reader is buying it.
It's a lot of really heavy character work. You have to really understand the characters you're writing - the less I get the original character, the more issues I'm perpetually having. I tend to fly fast and loose with characterizations, but when writing roleswaps I have to refer back to canon and the source material a lot ("In canon he did X thing, with his newly different backstory how would that decision change?"). The more you're rooted in canon, then the funkier and more divergent you can get.
Personally, I like to play a fun little game I call: how exactly opposite can I make this character until he stops feeling like this character? I Sometimes my goal in writing is "how deeply can I ruin this story". This is not a good game and people should not play it. I find that the lazier I get about getting in touch with the canon character, about keeping track of the canon decisions, and about following these guidelines, then the more difficult a story is to write. If you structure a story well then it's easy to write, and roleswaps are pretty easy. Thanks for the question!
