One Dress a Day Challenge
November: Oscar Winners
Moulin Rouge / Nicole Kidman as Satine
Year: 2001
Designers: Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie
Like the so-called "Hindi Wedding Dress," this is a costume for a play-within-a-play. Since the costumes for this movie are already very stylized and flashy, it must have been a challenge for the designers to make these costumes look even more theatrical. Hence the fantasy headpiece--and if you told me this one was also based on the Australian frilled lizard, I would find that completely believable.

absolutely in love with how many elements from the TSOTL novel, "Clarice" adapted and explored. Like.. you'd have no idea what "How does it feel to be so beautiful?" meant UNLESS you read the novel.

A Year in pictures/music 2023
In 2022 I had the idea to make an Austin Butler advent calendar.
I loved the process of making it so much that I decided to commit to a whole year of AB pictures with a corresponding song. And while January brought a lot of heartbreak for Austin (and in my personal life) I managed to plan out the first half of the year. I took a little break from working on it because frankly, I needed a lot more new pictures of Austin to show up. I thought that may happen after the Oscars and with the release of 'Masters of the Air', 'The Bikeriders' and 'Dune 2'. Alas all these projects were pushed back. But by the end of July I had all the pictures I needed and found all the lyrics I wanted to go with the pictures.
Finding the corresponding songs wasn't an easy task and something I underestimated. I tried to have no doubles but a few are there. I hope you'll subscribe to the spotify playlists. Maybe you find some new (to you) songs that you really like. And frankly it would mean a lot to me personally to know that some of you from the Austin fandom appreciated the effort it took to create this.
All in all, I am happy to have accomplished this project.
A special shout out to @klizzie93 for reblogging (I think) almost every single one of these. It means the world to me. <3
For the constant likes a special thanks to @blurredcolour, @ab4eva, @kendralavon7, @areacodefan, manicpixiedinonuggies, @kingdomforapony, @caughtinatrapicantwalkoutbecause and many many more.

one thing that i really appreciated in tsotl that i wasn’t able to articulate until recently is clarice’s relationship with idealism, and the way that its framed: clarice fails to save the one lamb she could carry in her past, but that desire to save lives, even if it is just one, is never ridiculed within the story. instead, even in jaded circumstances in a less-than-perfect world, she saves catherine martin. there is no scene where clarice is shown that this desire to help others is foolish, no, she wins on her own terms, she’s saved that one lamb. saving one person is enough—catherine martin walks out of that house alive, and if that isn’t uplifting then i don’t know what is

One Dress a Day Challenge
June: Weddings
Moulin Rouge / Nicole Kidman as Satine
This gown is worn for a wedding scene in a play-within-a-play, so maybe it's cheating a tiny bit on the theme? But I think it counts! As I recall, the play is set in India, but this is just meant to be a fantasy costume with vague Indian inspiration along the lines of Theda Bara's version of ancient Egyptian costume for Cleopatra--a film made not so long after this movie is set.
This costume is currently in a museum in Australia; here is a link to a detailed writeup of its construction. According to their article, it is made of ivory rayon crepe with embroidered panels of "stylised floral motifs in raised metallic silver thread and silver pearling (coils), with silver sequins, clear, pale pink and pale green beads and diamantes."
I've heard it said that no one is "meh" on this movie--it's either love or hate. Well, I successfully managed a "meh." I liked it but didn't love it, and I've only seen it once. But it definitely has an idiosyncratic, stylish look to it that sticks with you. I think it deserved its Oscar for costume design, by Catherine Martin and Angus Strathie.
This article has a good analysis of the movie's costumes. I particularly like the observation about how an authentic period wardrobe would not have suited the tone of the movie or what it was trying to do.
