The Salii’Qi - Saliinthia’s Sophonts
The primary sophont species residing on the warm, Earth-like world of Saliinthia are the Salii’Qi, a race of strange mammalian-insect creatures. They have dispersed into four main subspecies, two sedentary groups who live in the forests and islands respectively, and the two nomadic groups who call the grasslands and deserts home. Through this blog I will delve deep into their various cultures, religions, technology, and day to day lives living on Saliinthia!
Basic Biology
The Salii’Qi evolved from intelligent, largely carnivorous pack hunters, with the grassland subspecies being the oldest ones. They have intelligence equivalent to that of human beings, though tending to be better at problem solving. Their mammal-like biology gives them warm blood and dense bones, though their skeleton is derived from a graphite filled exoskeleton similar to that of insects, that was slowly internalized over the course of millions of years. They are egg layers, and have a complex life cycle not unlike that of an Earth caterpillar or beetle.
Salii’Qi have three sets of eyes, two are simple and detect movement and light only, while the third pair is complex and has an expanding and contracting pupil like Earth’s vertebrates. They hear through bright colored ear flaps held up by cartilage, able to swivel and pin to show emotion or focus in on certain sounds.
Salli’Qi have four pairs of limbs, two are used for walking while the other two are used for physical manipulation. One pair of limbs are attached to the skull. These “arms” evolved from pedipalps, now used for eating and handling weapons or other objects. The pedipalps are weaker than their forearms, so they usually use those for heavier work like lifting large objects. With the evolution of centaurism in these creatures, they lost a lot of flexibility in their backs, and so can no longer keep their forearms on the ground for long periods of time.
Tumblr media
The skeleton of the Salii’Qi have a dark color due to the high amount of graphite present in their bones, with black teeth stronger than ours. Their bones are dense and very similar to ours, although the ribs are free floating and connected with cartilage. Some of the vertebrae located near the end of the body are fused, which aid in supporting the back. Ancient relatives had a connected skeleton below the skin, which resembled that of insects. To allow for more flexibility and dexterity, those bones have now been reduced to cover less area.
Tumblr media
Salii’Qi have organs very similar to ours, but have a unidirectional respiratory system. They breathe in through two spiracles beneath their eyes, and after passing through the lungs, it is exhaled through the two spiracles placed behind the first pair of leg’s shoulders. This allows faster replacement of oxygen in the bloodstream, fueling their insect-like biology.
Their digestive system extremely similar to ours, the only notable difference being the tiered stomach, which allows for tough protein rich plant matter to be digested.
Salii’Qi have a gonochoric reproductive system, meaning they have two sexes. Both sexes have bright colored ear flaps and antennae, but during the spring the male coloration deepens for mating. Females are slightly larger than males, and have duller colors. Depending on the culture, females may take multiple male partners during the mating season, or only keep one partner for their whole life.
Tumblr media
Subspecies
The Salii’Qi are spread over four main subspecies, and are regional variants. As mentioned before, the nomadic grasslanders were the first successful variants, which then radiated into the forest, desert, and island subspecies. As the names imply, they live in settlements and groups around specific biomes they are best adapted to.
Tumblr media
The foresters are mostly a sedentary group, and also physically the largest. They eat the most fruit and plant matter out of any other , and have learned how to farm and selectively breed crops. They have long, thin limbs for reaching up into the vegetation, and upturned simple eyes to see differences in the shadows above. They are skittish and try too keep to themselves, but enjoy trading their crops with other groups. Grasslanders are nomadic, but have specific areas they return to during nesting season. They follow the herds of large grazers who roam the grasslands, using their good stamina to their advantage. They are a proud and strong group, seen as kind and humorous. They are artisans, creating unique goods and clothing out of hides and pelts for trading with other groups. Desert dwellers live in smaller groups, and instead of hunting, they primarily ranch and travel with herds of domesticated livestock. Desert Salii'Qi forage desert fruits, roots, and other plant matter before a harvest. They travel to feeding grounds during the fall and winter, but return to fertile river communities during the spring and summer where plants for livestock flourish along the banks. During this time, the desert Salii-Qi raise their children to take on their next journey. Islanders are small, social Salii'Qi who settled on an archipelago millions of years ago. They are the most well adapted group and the second oldest subspecies. Islanders have partially webbed feet, seal-like fur, powerful limbs, and higher back spiracles which makes it easier to spend time in the water. They primarily feed on fish and island fruit which they've selectively bred. Islanders mainly spearfish, but also use boats for fishing and trade. They routinely voyage to the mainland to trade goods, and some have even settled on the mainland shores.

Would you be willing to like, info dump about your Troll pupating headcanon that appeared in your Between AU? Just elaborate on how it works and such?
YES. Putting this under a cut because it's moderately long
Okay okay so. I don't know why but trolls are like. Little bugs to me. So I want to give them a few small bug traits, make them little creatures.
And pupation seemed like the most fun way to do that. A pupa is an insect's life stage where they undergo metamorphosis between larval and adult forms. In real life, most pupation involves larval structures breaking down while adult structures like wings develop—in that case of caterpillars, the bug sees itself liquified during the process (while still retaining memories of pre-pupation! neat!).
Of course, in canon, we see baby and child trolls all the time, and they're not that different from the main characters. So troll pupation isn't as drastic as it is for most real-life insects in my headcanon; rather, it might be better described as spedrun puberty.
So. The headcanon itself. At about 12 or 13 years of age, a trolling will start to experience a surge in appetite and drop in metabolism. I'm not entirely decided yet on whether the cocoon is something that they build up over time from spun/shed hairs, or if it's something more instantaneous formed directly from their hair—though I'm leaning more towards the latter.
The troll spends most of their pupation asleep. Body structures don't need to break down to the extent seen in real-life insects, so while some semi-drastic changes do happen (genitals develop and become accessible, though they won't be fully functional for a few years yet; hair lengthens and becomes stronger + able to shift color and length; new adult teeth, fur, and claws grow in), the troll remains pretty much intact the entire way through the process.
When they emerge, the troll isn't actually a full adult yet; though most of the major changes have been ticked off, it still takes a few years of regular growth before they can be considered fully mature.
A big thing about pupations is that trolls are adaptable. And I headcanon Pop Trolls to be one of the most adaptable genres (since pop is literally defined as "whatever's popular," though the genre itself has a few defining features), though all trolls pupate regardless of genre. So trolls that are under a lot of stress or caught in unusual conditions may find themselves emerging from their pupations with new features outside of what's normally expected. These adaptations aren't super drastic—for example, a Pop Troll raised by Techno Trolls wouldn't emerge with the exact same structure as a Techno Troll; rather, they'd get webbed paws and bigger lung capacity (maybe bioluminescence if they're lucky) at the most. Lost limbs can occasionally be regrown during pupation if the injury was recent enough, and most scars will fade during pupation.
So why does Branch pupate at fifteen in my headcanons? Simple: he's gray. The lack of color is more than just a signifier of his disposition; it has direct physiological consequences with regards to Branch's growth rate and metabolism. His troll endocrine system released the necessary hormones to induce pupation late as a result. Hormones being what they are, it's possible for a fully-colored troll to have a delayed or even early pupation, but such deviation tends to be rare.
In the Between AU, Branch loses his tail at roughly thirteen years old. When he pupates about two years later, his body adapts to the whole "living with creatures twenty times his size" situation, and instead of regrowing his tail his hips and legs shifted to accommodate the new balance.
tl;dr my troll growth headcanons are a mix of mammalian (human) style puberty and buglike metamorphosis; trolls speedrun their puberty in a hair cocoon

I also have cast them as alice in wonderland and the nutcracker in my head because i'm quirky like that but im putting it under the cut becayse it is too long
NUTCRACKER: OK so we have to go in with the assumption and aceptance that clara does Not have a thing with the nutcracker in this adaptation they are just dancng. Anyways crygor is drosselmeyer mike is the nutcracker and penny is clara. Wario is the rat king natch. I wanted him to be the nutcracker because he has teeth but then i rememmbered drosselmeyer and it all fell into place. I'm going to be honest everything after the rat king dies is like a drug trip to me i dont remember what happens. I'm going to say tht ashley was cast as the sugarplum fairy but she threatened to burn the whole place down so red is her understudy. He has a great time. This is all i have
ALICE IN WONDERLAND: This one is called Penny in waa-nderland and my pitch is that crygor is the big sister that&:s like, trying to teach her shit (i read the book but this is based on the disney movie because it's easier) and mona is the white rabbit (because shes always late). Tweedle dee and tweedle dum are kat and ana, natch. Also. Dribble and spitz are the march hare and mad hatter respectively and orbulon is the dormouse because he is sleepy. Jimmy t is the cheshire cat but he has a smaller, separate cheshire cat in his wig. Plus also, the caterpillar. Is. ...... I guess mike. Congrats mike. Wario is the queen of hearts

Ayooo, on another person's notes & views on the Corpius/Z-57 topic. I do like the 'different stages in their life' take on it, but here's another~ Just plain old evolution. Like Darwin's finches. One could theorize that they have the same ancestor, but developed differently due to where they migrated and live. Confusion arises with Ghavoran & Artaria though, 'cuz of Corpius' presence in both locations, in-game & in pictures etc. It's a very wild thought as a whole + where would Z-57 hail from?
If they're different evolutionary strains of the same species, it probably wouldn't be too far-fetched for their territory to overlap a bit. The experiment's four-clawed feet look like they're adapted for climbing or grasping, so if the shell/etc is natural, maybe they live in trees? The best I can think of is that both subspecies could share Ghavoran as a territory, but Corpius lives on the ground while Z-57's theoretical wild type cousins hunt and breed up in those massive trees.
I think a lot of their differences might boil down to genetic tampering, but the hard part in answering either of these ("evolution or life stages?" and "natural or genetically modified?") is figuring out what is genetically modified/indigenous to this or that regional species/a Feature of juveniles vs a Feature of adults. Everything from the way their jaws are shaped to the shape and size of their eyes, plus the bigger differences like the shell/stinger combo vs the naked back and scorpion tail. Those are all things that come into play.
Was the shell given to the experiment by putting scorpion monster DNA in a blender with a bug's DNA, or is this an evolutionary adaptation? And if it's natural, how old is this animal and where does it live, because a shell like that is something I would expect to see on a juvenile if this animal is a predator; the babies could use a buff like that to help them survive to adulthood. If it's of reproductive age and the shell is natural, does it form so the animal can survive until it bangs and dies? Are they like moths? Eat like a caterpillar, achieve metamorphosis, then make a mad dash for Corpius Tinder so you can wait for a hot hunk of meat to lay eggs with and subsequently die as the moths do? Did Quiet Robe raise this wiggly little worm guy until he was old enough to use OkCupid For Beasts, then take the knife to him? Where was Raven Beak during all of this? Did he order this experiment to be done, or was this a personal project for Quiet Robe while Big McChicken was dealing with re-planning the Metroid situation (if Z-57 is indeed a genetic experiment, Raven Beak having an interest in it would track; Dairon is a Mawkin bio-research facility, Quiet Robe is probably not the first scientist to work there, and genetic modification seems right up Raven Beak's alley a la Metroids)? Is it a "he"? Where the hell does this thing even poop from?
Also of note: Corpius is absolutely built, while Z-57 has little twig legs with hardly any beef, but that could also be attributed to a life spent growing up in a lab and maybe/maybe not getting the right amount or the right kind of exercise. Corpius moves around by dragging its weight around with those legs, so of course those muscles have seen some work. Z-57 also has six of them to pick up the slack, so there's a lot to consider.
And that's just scratching the surface: that's only a fraction of the whole picture for the arms debate. We haven't even started talking about teeth.
I went off on a tangent there, but both of the asks related to this post brought good ideas into the fray. I appreciate that you took the time to articulate!

Rom / 2 & 4 :)
(Asks from this ( x ) meme)
2) What animal they remind me of
You will never believe what I will say.... xD Okay okay, her commitment Kin status and lore aside, her human self the way I made her reminds me of a hamster! Because she is tiny, has weak eyesight but can hear well, like to run around, and is very adaptive - similar to a rat but 'cute'. Mice + hamsters are rodents that say 'hiiiii' but rats are rodents that say 'bruh'. x) But also because hamsters are often mistaken for 'lazy and dumb' creatures by people who don't know better when in fact they are as intelligent as average rodents, and they are simply nocturnal so they sleep most of the daytime! :pensive:
As for overall vibe, she also reminds me of a tardigrade even more than of 'caterpillar' or something! They survive anything (even outer space!) and I think Rom is nearly immortal (as in, we kick her from the Lake rather than actually killing). Also just look at them, they are chonky with many legs. xD
4) Physical headcanons (sleeping habits, favourite food, all that)
One of her most frequently seen habits is holding her hands together, mostly around the chest level, sometimes near her face - just a habit.
She has large and rare freckles:
Tumblr media
Fun fact - a couple of times I broke the pattern with them on accident, and other couple of times I just forgot them completely ;-; I am just clumsy as an artist but I try to improve that. Someday I will learn.... The proper pattern I planned is - three on her right cheek, two under her right eye and five on the left side of her face.
A lot of the time her lips are open just enough to show her front teeth, which is just her Default Settings. She only closes them when either she is tense or when someone tells her to do so.
You would expect her to be nice to all living creatures, but it is not always the case. If she finds a bug or a cockroach stuck in her meal, she will just eat it! I mean, they put that on themselves, right...?
Her senses work in extremely mysterious ways and it was the case even before anything having to do with Byrgenwerth! For example, she can hear sounds so far away or so quiet no other person would even notice them, or her intuition would urge her to check a seemingly random place and find an interesting object, or a creature! Sometimes she can also find lost objects by 'smelling' them (even if they have no smell). It is almost as if her fate was grimly foreshadowed - however it just happens with some people in reality too... I'd say the reason is, human senses being way more keen than we believe and humans not realising like 90% of what they're perceiving and catching on.
She is far-sighted, her glasses help with it.
I said that she has rather keen senses, right? Well, there is an exception for very harsh stimuls - like thunder or explosions. She'd need several seconds to actually react at something very sudden. The rule with her basically is, the more obvious something is - the slower she is to react to it. Most of it comes because she is too submerged in thoughts and her inner world.
Rom has trouble sleeping during the night, most of it is just her laying with eyes closed, but the daytime destroys her. She developed a habit of catching up with classes she might have nearly napped through during the night in the library, with a few other students with similar problem.
She is the second shortest student in the class (160 cm, or 5'3'')! The first shortest is my Laurence, sorry fdshdshd He is 155 cm, or 5'1'' :')
She appears like a person in 0 physical shape but honestly, the thing draining her energy or preventing her from doing many physical tasks is her HUGE brain sdfhsdh And mental state. If it is not lack of night sleep, it is the raw amount of her thoughts being so heavy she bends under them xD When you manage to make her feel more positive and involved in the world around her, she gets very fast, light and agile! Just needs right motivation.
Her hair is always extremely soft and nice to the touch, as if it is stuck in permanent 'just after washing and hair conditioner' state. It also can't grow past the length I draw her with, it happens with some people that at some point hair just stops (it is just genetics in her case).

Pest Control Services in Melton South
Pests are not only a nuisance but also can pose serious threats to your property. That is why, if you are facing pest infestation problems in your property, it is essential to call professional Melton Pest Control South service immediately.
Cockroaches are one of the most common pests that can be seen in homes and businesses. They are notorious for spreading disease and contaminating food.
Spiders
Spiders are one of the most common pests in homes and businesses. They are found in a variety of areas inside your home, including basements, crawl spaces, closets, along baseboards and entryways, and under sinks.
Most species of spiders are predators that feed on other arthropods. Some use venom to kill their prey, while others trap and immobilize it using silk snares or webs.
Some spiders have a limited lifespan, while others can survive for months without food or water. Some have adapted to live indoors, while others thrive in warm and moist climates.
During mating season, female spiders produce large numbers of eggs. These are laid in silk egg-cases, which may contain hundreds of eggs. Some species are social, building communal webs to share resources and care for their young.
Rats & Mice
Rats and mice can become a problem for homes and businesses, as they can chew through electrical wiring and insulation. This can cause damage that is difficult to repair and cost a lot of money.
They are also known to spread diseases that can affect humans and pets. This can lead to illness, pain, and even death.
Taking preventative measures to keep rats and mice out of your property can help you avoid rodent infestations in the future. These include sealing holes, cracks and other entry points and eliminating sources of food and water.
One of the first signs of a rat infestation is finding rat droppings in and around your home. The droppings are shiny black and vary in size depending on the species of rodent.
Squirrels
The family Sciuridae is one of the most diverse mammals on earth, with a range of species thriving in forests and farmlands worldwide. It includes tree squirrels (genus Sciurus), flying squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, prairie dogs, and ground squirrels.
Squirrels are small-bodied, nimble rodents with bushy tails and large eyes. Their fur is soft and short, varying in color from gray to red and black to white.
They are experts foragers and love to eat bark, seeds, nuts, fruits, roots, bulbs, fungi, grains, bird eggs, and other foods. They bury surplus food two to five centimeters below the soil or in tree hollows.
They also chew on and damage a variety of materials, including wooden decks, exterior siding, fencing, and electrical wiring. Their always-growing incisor teeth can wear down wood and other materials, which can result in structural problems or water leaks in the house.
Wasps & Bees
Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem. They collect nectar and pollen from flowers, which they distribute to other insects and plants.
Unlike bees, wasps are carnivorous predators who eat flies, caterpillars and other arthropods. They also scavenge food, including fruit, sweets, meat and even carrion.
Wasps are social insects that live in colonies. They communicate with each other through pheromones that alert other members of the colony when they are in danger.
Some wasps nest above ground in bushes, the voids of trees and walls, attics, or other hidden places. Other wasps build their nests underground beneath rocks, fallen logs, patios and driveways.
Wasps can become a problem for people when they build their nests in buildings. They will then deposit honey and wax or dead larvae in the building which can be harmful to people.

The Complete Guide To Skid Steer Attachments
Skid steer attachments have proven to be the most adaptable piece of equipment in the construction and agricultural industries. Skid steers are a class of equipment known for their ability to turn. The machine will slide because one side of its tracks will turn faster than the other since they lack separate front wheels that can steer the driven rear wheels. Tell us more about skid steer attachments right now.
The tool mounted to the hydraulic arm of a skid steer loader is called a skid steer attachment. The multi-terrain loader, compact track loader, and compact wheel loader are just a few of the loader models that Caterpillar manufactures to go along with its skid steer loaders.
Types of skid steer attachment:
1. Bucket: Skid steer buckets and skid steer snow buckets are a diverse group of attachments with a variety of shapes and sizes for various uses. To level up your dirt dump, use a general-purpose bucket with a flat leading edge. Additionally, you may attach a set of bucket teeth to transform your skid steer into a little digging tool.
Tumblr media
3. Augers: Auger attachments for skid steers are construction tools designed to drill deeply into the ground. The blades of skid steer post hole augers are linked to a long, sturdy steel shaft and spiral downward in a helix pattern. All small construction machinery, such as skid steer loaders, compact track loaders, all-terrain loaders, wheel loaders, and micro excavators, is compatible with auger work tools.
4. Hammers: You can easily develop land and demolish buildings with cat hammers as skid steer loader work equipment. Rock, concrete, brick, and other stiff materials can be broken through with hammer attachments, which are hydraulically powered equipment.
You can contact Iron Craft to find out more information or purchase these little skid steer attachments. We have a full selection of tractor attachments, such as disc harrows, skid steer attachments, grader blades, box blade scrapers, landscape rakes, and rotary cutters and tillers.

I wish I had died sooner...
Tumblr media
In a planet that's very far from our universe, once lived Mr Joy and Miss peace. They lived in Dream city where everyone had everything they have ever dreamed of.The grass was always so "beautifully green", the butterflies "have never been caterpillars", and the citizens were all born "successful". In that planet, no one has ever cried, because as soon as a creature would shed a single tear, they would instantly pass away and reincarnate in another planet as rocks _as the legend says_ which _till then_ has never happened.During the first few hundred years, no one ever died. Up until the year 701, when miss joy and miss peace were starting to get sick even though they had no idea how crying even felt like. Day after day, week after week, they got really weak until they passed away. Their death flipped their world upside down, because in that loss, they did not only loose their source of joy and peace, but they also lost themselves, they lost their smiles, they lost all their money, they lost their family greetings, they simply lost EVERYTHING...At first, they thought it was some sort of viral virus they somehow had caught in a land where smiles used to be the only body language, where tears were like a very far thing that will never happen to them, where evil is only talked about in fairytales that will never become a reality, right? However, the rich were getting poorer, the grass was getting paler, and while the smiles were slowly but surely fading away; the sadness was getting closer and closer. Day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year, they still couldn't find out a way to get their old lives back, they cried one creature after the other, and also died following the same order. No one understood what was happening or what was going to happen, and for once in their entire past lives, they had no idea what they wanted, how they wanted it, how were they going to get it, or if they were even going to get it.Thirteen earth-hours later, they couldn't help but all scream at the same time, feeling this incredible pain in what humans call "chest or heart", they looked at each other and found out that they couldn't speak a single word and the only memory they have of their past lives was the death of Miss Peace and her beloved husband Mr Joy.They open their eyes to see a nurse, then a doctor, then this wonderful woman they call my mom. And it was at that moment when they realized that they _all of them_ became this one living thing called a Human...For the next few years, they were already drowning in misery. A misery that cannot be described using just words, unless those same emotions are felt. The creatures realized that their old world was just a wonderful illusion that fed their lazy minds. Thus, they slowly started to get adapted to incredible amounts of sadness. The little girl that was made of so many creatures was named Emerauld, and she was also in terrible pain. Actually she wasn't sure of anything, if her pain was real, if it also was just an illusion, if she was in danger, or even if she was feeling safe. That confusion ruined her already miserable life because while she was forced against her will to face her truth, she also had to face those illusions. They ate her joy and peace away until there was nothing left anymore. And only at 15 years old she passed away... This death is the second death in this story, or perhaps the 2nd beginning since every end is a second chance to find yourself, and Emerauld really did find not only herself but her joy and peace as well. The moral of the story is that behind every ache whether it's permanent or temporary exists a glory you can only reach by resisting that pain and facing your fears. Which could be as simple as brushing your teeth or as complicated as looking them dead is the eyes making a cold shiver go down their spine, which made her wish she has died sooner...

Starfish
All starfish resemble stars, and though the most common have only five arms, some of these animals can grow up to 40 arms. They’re also strong enough to rip apart mollusca and crustacean shells.
While they have highly adapted stomachs and exceptionally well-developed “skin,” sea stars lack brains and have absolutely no blood. Lacking a bloodstream and gills, starfish live by pumping seawater through their bodies to deliver nutrients, oxygen, and other essential fluids.
On each arm, there may be up to 15,000 tiny tube feet that move in caterpillar-like synchronization, propelling the starfish forward at an efficient pace.
Their feet can form a powerful glue that will bond indefinitely with a rock or prey item, with an adjacent tube releasing a solvent to undo the bond once the star is ready to move on.
Sea stars are cannibals when provoked by reductions in normal food supplies.
One of their bizarre traits is their ability to eject their stomachs. After a sea star opens its prey’s shell by gluing its feet to the outside and forcibly ripping the shell apart, it’ll shoot its own stomach into the shell. The inverted stomach actually digests the animal inside its shell and turns it into a liquefied soup.
They have no teeth and are not dangerous to humans. But crown-of-thorns starfish are different, their upper surface covered with venomous spikes.
While sea stars are typically very accomplished as predators, cushion stars are much gentler animals with less dramatic lifestyles. They mostly feed on detritus, plant material, and sometimes coral. The cushion star also serves as a sort of home for other species of marine animal in a strange symbiotic relationship system. Small fish may live inside the main body cavity of this sea star, which is filled with water, while invertebrates on the outside clean the prickly spines.
Sea stars do have eyes that give them the ability to navigate, and they’re located in a pretty weird place: the tips of their arms.
Sea stars can switch gender at will. Some species have both male and female sex organs and can take on either role while mating.

List of Animals That Slither
New Post has been published on https://www.petculiars.com/list-of-animals-that-slither/
List of Animals That Slither
Characteristics of animals that slither
Crawling involves moving forward by specific movements, with the body touching the ground, which leads to a loss of energy through friction. The highest performance when traveling through slithering is made by animals without feet: snakes, earthworms, snails, caterpillars, etc.
Regardless of the anatomical form of each type of reptile, amphibian, mollusk, or invertebrate, each can use various actions to move around the earth, an excellent summary of the attributes they share with each other can be listed.
The circulatory system and the mind are more evolved than in terrestrial and aquatic creatures. They’re ectothermic creatures, meaning they can’t control their temperature. Generally, they have elongated tails and are slithering animals.
You might also like my articles on whether snails bite, whether anacondas eat people and the number of teeth on snakes.
They have epidermal scales that can be lost or develop throughout life. Strong jaws with or without teeth. They breathe in through the lungs, even though certain types of snakes breathe in through the skin.
Some of the most common slithering animals are snakes, worms, leeches, snails, or lizards. Crawling is a locomotory characteristic of most reptiles and amphibians.
Insects also tend to crawl when they do not fly; terrestrial mollusks such as snails and slugs crawl on a specialized foot.
Most animals that crawl do so because of their lack of legs; they must use their bodies to generate a propulsive force.
Animals That Slither
Snakes
There have been found over 3400 species of these animals that crawl, in different parts of the world, and when I talk about them, I basically mean the whole suborder that includes each of these reptiles. They belong to the order Squamata (scaly), which also includes iguanas, lizards, and other reptiles, in addition to snakes.
The characteristics of these reptiles also place them in the category of vertebrates (vertebrate animals), which are all creatures who have a backbone, for example, boa, python, mamba, cobra, snake, and other common names that are called species of some of their most common families.
They are animals that have a limb-free body that contains more than 100 vertebrae and some have more than 400, which gives them a lot of flexibility. Also, their body and movement are very well adapted, so snakes can swim, sink, climb trees, dig, jump, stand, and some can slip. In general, the snake moves in a wave-like way, moving its entire body from head to tail tip, although some only touch the front of the body to push the other and so on.
Others move with their heads up, horned rattlesnakes for example, and other species can move in a straight line due to the scales on the belly. In addition, it is observed that they can open their jaw wide because the bones of the jaw are attached to the rest of the body with little force. In addition, it has very strong refractive muscles that facilitate its mouth to open wide to ingest large prey.
Snakes have four ways to move. Because they have no legs, they use their muscles and scales to move around.
The most well-known method is the serpentine mode, in which it moves in a wavy way pushing on any surface, such as rocks, trees, or earth.
Concertina mode is more used in enclosed spaces. The snake slows down the back of the body as it pushes and expands its upper body. Then it releases the top, straightens, and pushes the back.
Surround mode is used on slippery or loose surfaces. In this way, the snake seems to put its head forward, while the rest of the body follows it.
The rectilinear way is a slow and straight way of slithering. The animal uses large scales on the abdomen to hold onto the surface while pushing forward.
Snails and Slugs
Snails and slugs move using the muscles under their bodies. They contract and stretch the muscles that propel them forward. To move, they make a complex series of wave-like movements throughout their entire body, which propel them forward. Most of the body of a snail or slug actually consists of a large leg; the body that touches the floor is known as the sole.
As the snail moves forward, the mucus comes out of a gland at the forefoot end, and so it moves over this gooey substance. The mucus is reduced to a certain amount of friction the soil causes the snails, reducing the contact to the point where a snail can crawl along the edge of a knife and suffer no cuts. Studies looking at whether mucus is a motion requirement are inconclusive, but mucus clearly helps movement to go faster and easier. This body fluid also reduces the risk of being affected by external agents and animosities and also repels the most dangerous insects, such as ants.
Worms
Worms move on a surface using hairs as anchors. In this way, they can be pushed forward or backward, using their muscles by contracting and stretching them.
Worms move using retrograde waves, alternating between swelling and contractions all over their bodies.
Caterpillars
Because caterpillars have no bones in their bodies, they use their abdomen to move. The first step is taken by their belly, with the rest of their body following a wavy movement. The caterpillars can move on surfaces such as soil and plants.
These larvae move through the frontal movement of the internal organs using muscle contraction.
Leeches
The setae (hairs) on the segments along the body and the mucus secreted also help leeches move. Leeches are of three types – freshwater, terrestrial and marine. Leeches move with the help of the anterior and posterior suction cups and longitudinal muscles throughout the length of the body.
Leeches have suckers on the upper and posterior sides of the body. This allows them to crawl using a movement with two anchors: they anchor their lower body and then propel themselves forward with the upper body.
A significant difference between leeches and other annelids is the development of cuppings at the anterior and posterior ends. In addition, the segmentation of the body wall may not correspond to the internal segmentation of the celomic cavity.
Legless Lizards
Legless lizard– Anniella pulchra
One of the most curious creatures that slither to move is the legless reptile. It has a cephalic location that cannot be discerned from the rest of the body and ends at a point.
It needs appendages to develop and has extremely bright scales along the body, which is exposed with a gray tint with darker side stripes and an amber stomach.
Two-legged worm lizard
This is a rarity that is found sporadically in certain sectors of the planet. The researcher Papenfuss collected 2.719 examples in an extensive investigation of the species he led in 1982.
Grass lizards
They are a species of non-limb lizards, native to Africa. The only members they have are some small points.
They move in a similar way as snakes do, propelling themselves forward by pushing against environmental contact points such as rocks, plants, or soil irregularities.

i gotta sleep soon so ive decided i will finally dump a buncha my headcanons here aswell adfhsf theyre all in here but im gonna copy paste them as a post as well because i wanna ill be updating the doc a lot but i probably wont edit the post much notes slight spoilers but not much? i dont think? mono is written to be the tallest because rcg is more like a bonus i guess? but she is the tallest + oldest (this goes for other similar things written abt six, mono and/or rk) some of these are more like what-if scenarios (ex. modern stuff mentioned like cars) that could fit maybe in an au of sorts rather than entirely canon all links are safe
Six
she/it/they
ADHD
Tasteblind, but sensitive to certain food textures
Shortest by a lot, youngest but not by much Zero sense of time
Likes lullabies, gets Mono to sing them to her (likes to make up her own versions sometimes) Short attention span, unless she’s insanely invested in something
Definitely bites ice cream Uses Mono like a cat tree, climbs all over him, loves to sit up on his shoulders or just literally drape herself around his neck like a scarf (Mono eventually gets used to it, but she still can’t stay there for long or it starts to hurt) (possibly a little random but think like .. them + )
Likes most toys but hates dolls, usually tears them apart/messes with them for fun Not a huge fan of rain, but the sound is calming, and she loves the aftermath, which includes the smell, dew on grass, just how everything looks, worms and snails coming out of hiding, and splashing in puddles
Likes teddy bears (big and cuddly, plus, reminds her of Mono)
You are not immune to her puppy eyes. Raincoat Girl is probably the only person who is
Collects things a lot, gets attached to certain items for a random amount of time When she learns a new phrase or word, she loves to repeat it to herself ( not really in the “ look at me i learned a new word and i'm gonna use it all the time “ type way, she just finds it entertaining, kinda like vocal stimming ) Does a similar thing when she finds something that someone else said funny, mocks them by repeating it and giggling
Likes making "nests" out of her stuff
Definitely occasionally runs on all fours, it's usually not for too long though.
Most of the time it’s momentarily while she's already in the middle of sprinting, to give herself a boost with a bound or two, or if she trips or feels herself falling forward while running she'll shift onto all fours which is is how she originally developed that "reflex", to prevent herself from falling while running, but eventually she started using it a little more often
She can also just walk normally on all fours too but she usually only uses it while running
She likes to show off her object collections to Mono, he’s very supportive :] Loves long car rides, as well as Runaway
Brings mono gifts (usually dead rats, birds, etc. or bizzare objects from her collection that reminded her of him for whatever reason)
Hates drinks like soda or sparkling water, anything fizzy is a no-no
Likes shiny things Her pupils widen (that cat thing) when she sees something interesting, or something/someone she likes Plus her eyes shine in the dark / in photos sometimes, they usually look red
Mono gave Six their lighter
Heterochromia, their right eye is a dark, reddish brown, the other is milky white
Always chewing on stuff
Fidgets lots, stim buddies with Mono Six stims by rocking on her feet, bouncing, cracking her fingers and shaking fists most often She also vocal stims lots, mostly by repeating animal noises
It’s got tons of freckles
She likes to sing, and is very good at it but doesnt get to very often
it’s favorite things to sing are hypno and sunshine ( 11:11 hypno, sunshine )
Not super into arts, but loves to draw, and is very fascinated by origami
Often refers to Mono as a nerd (affectionate) (also sometimes dork)
Purrs, growls, hisses etc. Because she doesn't talk much, she adapts more animal-like ways of communication, not only vocally but also physical stuff (slow blinking, headbutting stuff, mostly cat-like traits and reflexes. also she likes to drop stuff off of shelves and tables just bc its fun)
Doesn't know her own strength a lot of the time
Very touch starved (they all are) even if she doesn't realise it
Flinches and/or swats others away when touched Eventually they get used to Mono, he's the only person that can touch her at all, but she still has limits
No sense of others personal space though
She’s great at tracking things, mostly small animals
Super ticklish, not very happy that Mono found out
Very visual memory
She really loves all types of music, ranges from things like 100 gecs type stuff, to calm instrumental kinda things, literally anything with maybe a few exceptions Shark teeth, very sharp, loves making dents in stuff with them
Cat-like claws too (retractable maybe?? why not.. it usually has them out though) Love-hate relationship with snow, they find it weird and kind of icky, but Mono teaches her how to make snow angels, forts and snowmen, and she loves snowball fights (Mono regrets teaching them about those though), plus she adores going back inside and just drinking hot chocolate with Mono and sometimes other friends :]  Mono he/she Tallest of the three, oldest as well  Colorblind He has vitiligo Loves all sorts if arts and crafts, often drags Six into making stuff with him Her hair is very soft, even if it doesn't look like it Very touchy-feely, with others and with objects Knows and respects others boundaries. Six does not He will often push his own boundaries though He’s very protective, usually feels the need to put others safety and health in front of her own A little naive, will protect even if she isn’t getting anything in return from the person(s) Likes skirts! Mono loves to learn about his friends and their personalities, strengths, weaknesses etc. to use for their own benefit! For example, he has a different way to cheer up each friend, and does his best to include them in stuff he thinks they'll also like Loves any happy sounding music the most, but listens to lots of other stuff too (a few songs that remind me of him not lyric-wise but like, sounds like he'd listen to them, are She Wants Me (to be loved), Dancing in my Room, Sunday Best and Sunkissed type stuff, I don’t know music genres so) Favorite drink is probably coffee Loves all sorts of soup!! Has lots of nicknames for Six! Mostly uses kitty and shortcake (it hates them but gets used to them, only from Mono though; some of the other kids use them to get on her nerves, doesn’t end well for them) Love loves bugs! Six likes them too, but isn't as interested as Mono and Runaway (she likes to eat them) Runaway he/they Almost as tall as Mono, noticable difference though He loves chocolate milk and tea Probably the most reasonable out of the three Despite this, he still likes to annoy them (mostly Six) Similarly to Six, he sucks at keeping track of the time Likes goldfish snacks a lot His nomes are always nearby when he is Really likes coloring books and puzzles They love the sound of pianos, not the best at playing it but likes messing with them in his free time with Six (their rare bonding moments) Loves any instruments really, pianos are just his favorite Has the biggest sweet tooth Also loves bugs!! Mono and him are bug buddies His favorite bugs are caterpillars and butterflies, he isn’t a very big fan of spiders though (Mono didn’t used to mind them, but after the hand incidents in the hospital, he finds them icky; too similar) Bonus; RCG  she/they Tallest as well as oldest (again, not oldest by much though) Big sister vibes Super supportive Usually in charge of keeping others in line, doesn’t mind a little chaos here and there though (even if it doesn’t usually end well) Also has a few freckles, not nearly as much as Six Lots of energy that often rubs off on the others when she’s around Probably the most responsible, great with kids younger than her Loves teaching the others how to do stuff, has the longest attention span which makes it easier Very playful and teasing, but still knows and respects boundaries when it comes to that kinda stuff Gets easily stressed out and nervous when she doesn't know what to do, as she feels like she always has to be responsible aaaand thats all 4 now! i might do more characters like comic kids if i get enough ideas but thatll be in the doc if i ever do pleas share with me ur hcs and ideas too!!!! if u wanna i would love 2 see them!!

The Middle Glaciocene: 110 million years post-establishment
Tumblr media
Wurm Sign: The Burrowurms
As the rattiles diversified for the last ten million years since the collision of Fissor to the Gestaltian mainland, a few species of the slender, short-limbed clade known as the sninks, would eventually return to a subterranean burrowing lifestyle, similar to that of their molrock ancestors before the lineage of the rattiles came to live on the surface. These species, living in tight, narrow spaces, would be pressured to develop stubbier limbs and longer, more flexible bodies, would eventually produce a diverse clade of elongated, somewhat-serpentine underground-dwellers, the burrowurms.
The burrowurms, with their lifestyle, became highly convergent to snakes: but were constrained by several important features: namely, possessing two lungs, having a fused, single-piece jaw, and lacking the necessary abdominal muscles to fully cope with limbless locomotion. As such, the burrowurms would retain their limbs, highly-reduced but strong ones with a single hooked claw, as well as a scale-derived pseudo-claw at the end of their tails, essentially giving them five appendages to pull themselves along in their tunnels or caterpillar-like above ground. And their lack of unginging jaws would prevent them from tackling prey larger than themselves and thus excluding them from proper snake-niches: but instead, with constantly growing teeth that shed their caps regularly, as do all rattiles, they would end up filling a bizarre array of niches that are a far cry from the squamates they closely mimic.
Tumblr media
Basal forms such as the tunneling snink (Ophidomys macronyx) are still quite common in certain areas with plenty of loose, sandy soil, though as the species along the lineage increasingly got more derived they began to favor shorter, stronger limbs with reduced digits, such as the two-toed tailnail (Cricetophis caudungulus), another sand-burrowing species that uses its spade-like tail to quickly tunnel backwards into the dirt when threatened by incoming predators.
The most derived group, however, are the quintopodophians: a lineage with one claw per limb and a tail with a keratinized pseudo-claw derived from scales that make the tail visually reminescent of a fifth leg: and functions like one too as it aids in pulling them through their tunnels. This lineage is easily the most diverse: it includes a wide variety of forms that have adjusted to different diets with the limitations--and advantages-- of their mammalian jaw and teeth. The long-tongued hiveraider (Myrmecophimys mononyx) is a specialized predator of colonial insects, breaching the subterranean fortresses of termites and ants and slurping up the residents with its narrow mouth and long tongue.
Others rely on their chiseling teeth, and some have re-evolved gnawing behaviors lost in more typical rattiles, though still shedding worn-out layers as opposed to grinding them smoothly as with the ancestral rodents. One such species is the chiseling rootbrute (Quintapodophis caudapus), which feeds on roots, tubers, grass rhizomes and fungi, which it chews through with its powerful teeth. Other species of this group are carnivorous, like the carrion shearwurm (Phobodontophimimus carnifex): while typically an insectivore, feeding on earthworms and beetle larvae with its beak-like incisors, it also is a scavenger drawn to carcasses with its powerful sense of smell, and is often found tunneling up from under carrion to gnaw away at the rotting meat, shaving off chunks of flesh with its incisors by rolling and twisting its body in a manner reminescent of a miniature crocodile.
Burrowurms are found all throughout the warmer climates of Gestaltia, thriving in a wide variety of environments except for those where the ground freezes solid in winter, as they are unable to tolerate such conditions. Breeding prolifically during summer months when food is plentiful, they are in turn preyed upon by many species of animals: including certain other specialized rattiles that have specifically adapted to hunt them in particular.
