Impacts on the Host Body: Jeckyll’n’Hyde Miraculous AU

Intro/bio post

While the host and kwami are completely different people, they do share the same body, even if it changes form depending on who’s in control. Things do stay consistent. In fact, Mari and Adrien would be covered in cuts and bruises if it weren’t for the Miraculous Cure taking care of them before Ladybug and Chat Noir detransform. But there are other changes.

While Mari and Adrien might feel like they’re getting rest when they black out and the kwamis take over, the body isn’t, so they may still feel tired if Ladybug and Chat Noir pulled a late night.

In and of itself, the kwamis taking over doesn’t do any damage to the host other than disrupting their normal life. But using their powers - Lucky Charm and Cataclysm, for example - can be draining for the host body to support. That’s why there’s a five minute limit after using the power. However, the kwami can push past it or even summon the power a second time, but that will start to take a serious toll on the host.

A corrupted Miraculous/evil kwami also takes a hefty toll on the host.

Adrienette - Jeckyll’n’Hyde AU

When Adrien first comes to class, Marinette has a little freak out because she already has pictures of him on her wall - just because they’re fashion spreads she took out of Agreste Magazine, but still. Kinda weird to have pictures of someone on your wall that is now in your class but you’ve never met before.

Marinette’s crush does still develop because of Adrien’s personality rather than being a celebrity crush, though. Origins sort of implies that Marinette really isn’t close with any of her classmates and Alya’s her first friend. I imagine most of the classmates don’t actively have negative feelings towards her, but due to Chloe’s bullying and the fact that Chloe often ropes others into it (Kim), she’s wary of opening up. When Adrien stands up to Chloe for her - something no one else is really doing, and especially impressive since she’s been his only friend for who knows how long - it means a lot to Marinette.

Marinette: Th-thanks for your help…

Adrien: Of course. … Is Chloe always like that?

Marinette: Y-yeah, pretty much…

Adrien: I’ve never seen her act like that before. Of course, whenever we’ve hung out, it’s just been the two of us, so I guess I haven’t seen her interact with many other people.

Marinette: How do you know Chloe?

Adrien: Our parents know each other. She was my only friend for a long time. I can’t believe this is how she’s been treating others the whole time…

Marinette: I’m sorry.

Adrien: No, no, you have nothing to be sorry for. I’m sorry she’s been treating you this way. It’s not okay.

Marinette is awkward, clumsy, and stuttery around everyone. Maybe slightly more around Adrien due to the crush, but not enough of a difference that it’d be notable to others. In fact, as she starts hanging out with Alya, Adrien, and Nino more, she’d start getting more comfortable with them and actually having friends and would become less awkward.

For Adrien’s part, he thinks Marinette is very sweet from the beginning, though obviously quite shy. But it seems like she doesn’t have a lot of friends and, hey, he doesn’t either. As he gets to know her better, he’s pleasantly surprised by her sense of humor, playfulness, and how willing she is to stand up for her friends even if she won’t stand up for herself.

Marinette would gradually catch on that Adrien’s home life isn’t good. She would feel powerless to directly do anything about it (such as confronting Gabriel), but would do what little things she can to ease Adrien’s burden in the only way she knows how. Hanging out with him when she can, bringing him extra sweets and little gifts, letting him hang out at the bakery with her and her parents on the rare occasions he’s allowed to get away from the house and his other responsibilities. When he is stuck at home, they play online rpgs together.

They are both dealing with trauma - Marinette at school and Adrien at home - and they bond over trying to help one another with those. Adrien helps Marinette at school and Marinette helps Adrien outside of school. While they don’t necessarily realize or vocalize it, they know a little of what the other person is going to and want to help them. That mutual connection leads to a deepening relationship.

MariChat - Jeckyll'n'Hyde AU

Most MariChat content is built on Adrien using Chat Noir to escape his overly controlled life and gain some freedom. But this Chat Noir doesn’t have any of the trauma from being Adrien, so that’s not a factor here. 

Things usually start off because Adrien knows Mari and interacts with her as Chat because he knows her already. But that’s not the case here, either. I’m not sure how it would start off because Chat Noir would see Marinette as just a random citizen. Albeit a cute one but. Not much different from others. 

Chat would sort of help Marinette calm down from spiraling. His overly chill, laid-back personality would help counter her overly anxious one. He would help her ground and refocus.

Chat would very much act like a cat - playing with her balls of yarn, taking naps, maybe even knocking things over when he’s bored, demanding pets.

Chat would listen to Mari talk about her crush on Adrien. He knows that he inhabits Adrien’s body but doesn’t know Adrien personally so this would actually be how he gets to know him. He concludes Adrien is an idiot.

Chat would also be very protective of Mari.

But they’d also just be dorks and banter.

Gabriel/Hawkmoth - Jeckyll’n’Hyde AU

There are a few ways Gabriel could be handled:

Option 1: Gabriel is completely unaware he is Hawkmoth and unaware of the miraculouses

Suboption 1: Gabriel is actually a good father and good person, his alternate form is just evil. Comes with the angst of realizing he’s the problem and he’s even been putting his own beloved son in danger.

Suboption 2: Gabriel is still a bad father, he’s just a normal bad, rich, neglectful parent instead of also being a super villain. He may even resent his son after his wife’s death or just feel like he reminds him of her too much so he pushes him away.

Option 2: Gabriel knows about the miraculous and he actually found the butterfly miraculous and corrupted it, possibly trying to use the power to bring Emelie back. But he didn’t understand that you don’t control it and basically become possessed. So he’s somewhat aware of it in that he wakes up from a black out and understands why, but may be frustrated he himself can’t control it.

I won’t be going with Option 1.1 (Gabriel being a good father) because having a controlling, neglectful father is a pretty defining aspect of Adrien’s character. I’ve already changed his character quite a bit by taking away his freedom as Chat Noir; having a loving father would basically make him a completely different person. Of the remaining options, I lean more towards Gabriel just being a normal bad parent rather than purposefully becoming a super villain, but I’ll continue to consider it.

Lady Noir - Jeckyll’n’Hyde AU

Chat Noir’s feelings for Ladybug maybe aren’t as potent as in canon, or at least not as obvious from the outside. It’s hard to tell through his chaos. But the most prevalent feature of his feelings for her is that he has total respect for her and will halt his chaos immediately if she asks.

While you’d think Chat’s chaos would make Ladybug crazy, he actually reigns it in enough that it’s not as much as a problem as it seems to be from the outside. Instead his chaos is actually an emotional reprieve for the very serious and responsible Ladybug. It’s always weird to me when Marinette will describe Chat Noir as her best friend (I mean what about Alya, Nino, and Adrien?), but with Ladybug being a separate person, Chat Noir truly is her best friend and the two really enjoy one another’s company.

The best way to describe their relationship is that Ladybug is the refined, strong queen and Chat Noir is her feral pet.

Loved the idea of Ruq using SFX makeup to look spooky. Honestly spookier than the boys. They’re too fashion, silly boys.

Also she’s enjoying being a menace cuz she’s gotta be the responsible one all the time.

The Gothic Spider

I saw Across the Spiderverse on Saturday. I never got around to making a Spidersona after the first movie and figured it was time. So here she be in all her gothic glory. The most unrealistic part of this is that an architecture student would have the time to fight crime on the side.

I did explore some options with purple but I decided it looked more goth without.

There was an idea.... To make stickers of popular characters in my itti bitti style to sell and make money online. But then I posted one of them and it got taken down for copywrite and that was the end of that idea. But I might as well post them on social media. I was gonna use silly names for them too: Captain America was gonna be ‘Merica Man; Iron Man was Titanium Alloy; Thor was Mother’s Drapes; Black Widow was Assassin Spider; Hawkeye was Archery Bird; Hulk was Angry Bean. But alas. I think Thor is my favorite. I’m the most unsure about Hulk - but by the time I got to him I knew I wasn’t selling the stickers and just wanted to complete the series, so maybe I’d try to make more adjustments if I was to sell it. Anyways. Here they be.

Rachyl White

Finally finished this. I sketched Rachyl the same time as Chelsea and the Hatress, but I was struggling with colors and figuring it out for the cleaned up version. (And then I forgot to post on tumblr; I posted it on Instagram April 1... Oops) Rachyl is an ace, like Chelsea and the Hatress. While those two graduated top of the class, Rachyl was the runt. She wouldn’t have survived training, except that she has a gift for telling when people are lying, so the Prince of Hearts pulled her from training to be his lie detector. She then became the manager of the aces and keeps track of their missions and such.

Ruq and my Stupid Sons: Welcome to the Villain’s World 

I remember seeing concept art for Twisted Wonderland YEARS ago - I think I might’ve still been in junior high - and then forgot about it. A few weeks ago I saw it advertised on Instagram and checked it out. It. Wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought you would play as a mage in one of the existing dorms. In hindsight, the way they set it up is actually a super cool format for the story, but it threw me off because I wasn’t expecting it. After a few weeks I decided that I had adopted all of the characters as my beloved but very stupid sons. Since there isn’t an avatar in the game, I thought it’d be fun to draw my character - Ruq - and draw out some of her interactions and my reactions to the game. This series will not be a game summary, though it will include spoilers. If you want to know what happens in the game, I’m sure you can look up play-throughs or transcripts or even play it yourself. I’m only gonna draw out the things I want to add or highlight. Now let’s talk design. Initially I sketched Ruq to look a little like me, but then I decided I wanted to make her more of a character rather than a self-insert (since I see the boys as my children but she would see them as classmates) and I decided to have more fun with the hairstyle. I didn’t realize it was an all-boy’s school at first (in my defense they don’t say that until the next book), but decided to leave her as a girl because I think it’s funny. Since Ruq is the only human in Ramshackle dorm, we don’t know what the uniform looks like, so I made it up. I don’t think Crowley would go out of his way to personalize stuff for Ruq but I decided she could make some alterations on her own. I wanted the “dorm color” to be gray because it kinda fit the Ramshackle vibe. Since the normal uniform has an arm band with the house colors, I copied Grim’s bow for the band and also decided that Ruq would rough up the edges for more Ramshackle vibes. Then I added a bat hair bow and platforms because obviously she is goth. For the “dorm uniform” I went with more casual cleaning clothes to call back to when they were janitors.

New character inspired by @8_jmal_8’s #monstersonachallenge. And yes, I’ve reverted to my 10 year old self and dove head first back into my Monster High obsession. I got the mummy and I thought that was really fun because I love Egyptian mythology and ancient Egyptian culture. I mean, they invented makeup and architecture. I’m not big on “sonas” and prefer to make OCs rather than representations of myself, but I did take some inspiration from myself for the character. For example, the blonde hair and blue eyes. An Egyptian wouldn’t actually have blonde hair. 

This is actually the first thing I felt super inspired to draw in quite a while and I maybe put too much thought into it. I’ve been following more MH fan artists lately and a lot of them have been redesigning the mummies and calling for the mummy characters to have more spooky appearances. I mean Cleo mostly just looks like a beautiful Egyptian girl. Where’s the mummy part of it? So I decided to play more into it. I also did some research and discovered that there were 3 kinds of mummification based on how much money you had access to. So I thought maybe Neith was poorer and got the cheapest mummification, so she maybe wasn’t as well preserved as the DeNiles. Her eyes have completely decayed away and she has glowing blue orbs in her empty eye sockets. Her skin is very dry and she has to moisturize a lot. I also thought it’d be fun to have her have some bandages that are keeping her lower jaw attached to the rest of her skull and kinda also made that look like a headband. I also wanted her to wear an ankh, the Egyptian symbol for life, just cuz I thought that’d be wonderfully ironic.  I started out designing a more historically accurate ancient Egyptian outfit, but it just wasn’t spooky enough and also was too far off from me. So I decided to combine gothic/alt fashion with the mummy fashion and I actually love how those mixed together. I also gave her a mummified cat. Cats were sacred to the Egyptians and they often mummified animals as well as humans, as mummification allowed one to move on to the next life.

The Mad Hatress

Okay, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Wonderlandians lately, but I’ve realized that I haven’t really. Told you guys about them much. Partially cuz I wasn’t set on designs and partially cuz The Hatress in particular is often a pain to draw. Basically, the Wonderlandians is my twisted Alice in Wonderland story that mostly focuses on the Aces, a group of assassins, one of which being The Mad Hatress. 

I’ve struggled with the Hatress in the past (below you can see some older designs; be warned, they get worse - I mean, older - the further you go). But I’m really happy with this design. The Mad Hatress definitely isn’t sane, but she also acts crazier than she actually is. Her hat has a pocket dimension that only she can access and it’s full of a random collection of items: tea cups, tea pots, clothes, snacks, swords, morning stars, even a live raven.
