Liminal spaces in ep 6 of Heartstopper
As always, endless thanks to @barrows-teeth and @herewetumble for their insights and editing help and BT’s lovely gifs! Find the master post here.
Episode 6 starts with Nick googling “best lgbtq+ films'' on his phone just before his mum says “Mamma Mia.” Nick rejects this suggestion and his mom leaves the room to dish up pizza. Nick is still looking at the list on his phone, snuggled next to Nellie, when Sarah Nelson comes back and suggests “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Nick looks like he wants to say something else, but just says “yeah.”
As they watch the movie, Sarah comments that they had to watch the movie every evening when Nick was 11 and she knew it was because he liked Kiera Knightly. Nick resists “Mum!” “What, she’s a very pretty girl.” “Please stop talking!” They turn to watch the movie and we can see Nick struggling with the recognition that he is attracted to Kiera Knightly as well as Orlando Bloom. (Many have commented on how relatable this scene is for their bisexual awakenings occurred similarly.)
Tumblr media
We have seen how comfortable Nick is in his kitchen with his mum and I think the living room is an extension of that space. He’s not ready to come out to his mum yet, but he’s more able to fully consider who he is.
Back in the fuller privacy of his room, he listens to the bisexual vlogger and seems to start coming to terms with his own sexual identity.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the girls are having lunch in the canteen. Darcy quips “this is an interesting lunchtime gathering we’ve got going on here” as Tara and Elle both poke at their phones. Tara has just posted about her relationship with Darcy on Instagram and is getting mixed reactions, so she is happy for the distraction Darcy provides when she asks what Elle’s up to (looking at Timothee Chalamet’s Instagram? :)). Tara says “probably texting Tao” and they coax out of her that she does have a crush on Tao. “I knew it,” squeaks Tara. It is clear Elle has settled in and found her place with Tara and Darcy—a stark contrast to the day she walked in and the door closed behind her, leaving us all with an instant of panic — was she trapped in a lonely hell?
Tumblr media
We have another scene of Charlie and Tao interacting with Harry outside school near the picnic tables which goes according to toxic masculinist ideas of heteronormativity. “Watch out Dicknozzle,” Harry spouts. Tao retorts, “if you want my attention that badly, why don’t you just throw something at me, like your last remaining brain cell.” Harry is left speechless and on his own turf, at that.
They walk past Nick and Imogen sitting on one of the tables. Tao gives Nick a disgusted look. Nick looks at Charlie like he feels sorry about something.
Tara is sitting in an instrument room, flipping through mixed comments on Instagram again. Darcy joins her and Tara warns her to “mind the door, that’s the one that locks you in if you let it shut.” Darcy reminisces that this is “the room...the special room, [they] got locked in and had [their] first kiss.” I love the fact that their first kiss was literally in a locked closet, before Tara was out. The orchestra teacher finds them and chastises them for being late for rehearsal. They remark she’s literally the only one in a 50 mile radius who doesn’t know they are together. So, maybe part of that closet still remains (and reminds us that we are always coming out).
Tumblr media
In the orchestra room, one girl says to Tara “I never would have guessed you were gay, but it’s so cool and brave of you” and a few minutes later, in the background, we hear girls responding with disgust to Darcy’s comment about same-sex schools being a waste from her perspective “as an absolute lesbian.” Where the closet was a safe space for the girls, the open classroom is not.
Nick and Charlie are lying on a blanket in the park and Nick says “How did you realize you were gay?” This is the first time we’ve seen Nick talk to someone about being queer. He’s been researching the topic in the privacy of his own bedroom (and obviously kissing Charlie in secluded locations) but this is the first time the topic has been raised in a more public environment. Charlie is secure with his identity (“It’s always been boys”) but Nick makes faces and Charlie guesses Nick “didn’t feel the same when he was little.”
Tumblr media
This is reminiscent of the park with Imogen, when Nick was saying he had buried his real self and he was trying to figure out where he fit. Now, he says again “I don’t know what [sexuality] I am.” But with Charlie, he can be more clear about the topic and the open air reinforces our impression that Nick is becoming more comfortable with sharing his full self. Charlie even says that Nick doesn’t have to figure it out right now and that even he didn’t wake up one day and say “oh, look, guess I’m gay now.”  Society informs who we are. We aren’t defining ourselves in a vacuum. But when a couple walks by with a dog as they are about to kiss, Nick sits up suddenly, breaking it off. He is not ready.
Nick accompanies Charlie into the gym for rehearsal and asks if he can attend the performance. Charlie moves away to get his drum kit set up and Tara walks up, taking Charlie’s position on the floor. They make a little small talk and then Nick tells Tara that he and Charlie are sort of “going out, but please don’t tell anyone.” Tara says “It’s funny how things turned out between us,” referring to the kiss they shared 3 years ago and they both agree that irony is not lost on them.
Nick asks if the girls are out to their friends, and Tara talks about posting it on Instagram.
Nick is clearly grappling with how much of himself and his relationship with Charlie he is comfortable putting out there. I think it’s interesting that the conversation is happening in the school gym, a location typically known for heteronormative relationships in sports.
Tumblr media
Nick takes Tara up on her invitation to join her and Darcy for lunch on the field. On the other side of the fence, we hear Harry bullying Tao: “Not having lunch with your boyfriend?”  Meanwhile, enclosed in their own private bubble, Nick shares “I’m not really out, yet” and “I don’t even know what my sexuality is” while chatting with them. Darcy and Tara accept him for who he is, regardless of labels. Again, it’s interesting that this is happening on a sport field, another spot typical for reinforcing heteronormativity. Darcy suggests a double date and Nick agrees, saying, “I like milkshakes.”
Tumblr media
In front of the door to the orchestra room, Darcy encourages Nick not to come out if he’s not ready. Nick asks Tara if she’s sure she’s gay or if she might be bi. Tara says kissing Nick was one of the things that convinced her she didn’t like kissing boys. As they stand outside in front of an open door, Nick reveals they are the first people he’s told about Charlie. Nick is starting to open his own door and come out a little bit more. Tara asks him if it feels good. He smiles. “Yeah, it really does.” AND WE ALL MELT.
Tumblr media
Charlie is on his bed, lit up by the sun, waiting for Nick to come ‘round. Tori appears in the doorway and seems to know what’s up, even though Charlie can’t admit anything to her. On the floor, the boys are studying and Nick lets Charlie know that he has told Tara and Darcy that they are dating. Charlie’s bedroom has changed for Nick from a space of confusion to refuge to safety.
Tumblr media
As Nick leaves, he tells Charlie about the proposed milkshake date and Charlie eagerly agrees. Nick opens the door, leaving it for Charlie to close. He looks back and waves goodbye before turning around and walking away. This time, there is just nice, bright sunlight as the door stays open.
First to appear at the milkshake cafe are Tao and Elle. They are being their silly authentic selves out in the fresh air, but not at all open about their feelings for each other. And neither knows about Nick and Charlie, yet. The six friends sit under a tent and chat while having their milkshakes. Tao suggests having a second round. Nick and Charlie leave first to get the shakes. Charlie asks Nick out on a proper date (sometime) and immediately takes it back. It is as if the fresh air has pumped up Charlie’s courage for a split second. Luckily, he is with Nick, who thinks it’s a lovely idea.
When Tao goes to help get the second round, Elle finds out her friends have been plotting without her consent to try to set her and Tao up. She is upset about this because she doesn’t want anything else to change. Nick and Charlie return to the table while Tao waits for the last two and Elle finds out that Nick and Charlie are together. It is worth noting that they are under the tent (the relationship is still a secret to all but these five) while Tao is out in “dark,” alone.
Tumblr media
In the gym, Nick sits with Charlie at his drum kit. They are bathed in a beam of light. Nick says he’s been researching bisexuality and he thinks that might be him. Does Charlie’s drum kit have a protective force field around it? Maybe so.
Meanwhile, Tara has run out of the room to escape the persistent homophobia surrounding her. She retreats to the secret (make out) instrument closet and Darcy follows, forgetting to leave the door open. Tara didn’t realize how differently she’d be treated after she came out and “just wants to live her life.” Darcy insists they can do that. In the meantime, Nick, Charlie, Elle, and Tao have been running from door to door looking for them.
As they all run back to the concert, Tara and Darcy hold hands. Nick reaches out for Charlie’s hand and Charlie grabs it just as they pass a brightly lit window. Elle follows, waving encouragingly at Tao who lags behind. Tara and Darcy are leading the way, modeling one way of being out, and Nick and Charlie are following in their footsteps.

(Reuters) - The U.S. Embassy in Haiti on Wednesday urged citizens in the Caribbean country to leave "as soon as possible" citing security and infrastructure challenges, as escalating violence has left thousands displaced and sent homicides soaring.
"U.S. citizens in Haiti should depart Haiti as soon as possible via commercial or private transport," the embassy said in a statement, urging extreme caution.
An escalating gang turf war in Haiti has caused a devastating humanitarian crisis that has displaced around 200,000 nationwide and left some 5.2 million people - nearly half of Haiti's population – in need of humanitarian aid, according to the United Nations.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Embassy in the capital Port-au-Prince temporarily closed, due to gunfire in the vicinity.

In turf war between Venezuela and Guyana, Brazil plays outsized role
Tumblr media
As tensions mount between Venezuela and Guyana, officials in distant Brasilia are watching their neighbors with increasing concern.
“If there’s one thing we don’t want, it’s a war in South America,” Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said last week.
Lula has emerged as a peace broker of sorts, determined to prevent the current war of words over the disputed Essequibo region from escalating into something deadlier.
One of his closest advisors will take part in Thursday’s summit between Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Guyana’s Irfaan Ali, in the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Tensions have been rising ever since Caracas held a referendum December 3 on Essequibo, an oil-rich territory administered by Guyana for more than a century but claimed by Venezuela.
Venezuela’s appetite for the territory has been heightened by Guyana’s recent tenders for oil exploitation in the area, where huge deposits were discovered by US giant ExxonMobil in 2015.

Testing by government agencies and watchdog groups have found PFAS in carpets, furniture, nail polish, shampoo, mascara, nonstick cookware, dental floss, raincoats, fast-food wrappers, pizza boxes, microwave popcorn bags, yoga pants, sneakers, sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, bedding, upholstery, children’s pajamas, paint, vinyl flooring and artificial turf. They’re in the protective equipment used by firefighters and medical personnel. They’re in an especially effective foam for putting out fuel-based flames. They’re in dust and the household cleaning products you might use to get rid of it. They are in flamingos in the Caribbean and plovers in South Korea. They are in alligators. They are in Antarctic snow. In Europe, they’ve been discovered in organic eggs; in the United States certain states have found them in produce and meat. Last year, a study of PFAS in freshwater fish in the United States revealed median levels so elevated that eating a single serving could be equivalent to drinking PFAS-contaminated water for a month. In June, the U.S. Geological Survey reported that it had tested private wells and public water supplies and found at least one PFAS in 45 percent of the nation’s tap water.

Idalia sweeps through Georgia after pelting Florida’s coast (NYT) Hurricane Idalia made landfall Wednesday morning in Florida’s Big Bend, hitting the area with heavy rain and devastating winds before marching northeast into Georgia. The storm severed power to hundreds of thousands of homes and left behind life-threatening floods across wide swaths of the region. Idalia, which briefly reached Category 4 strength, is now a tropical storm with sustained 70-miles-per-hour winds. Still, forecasters warned that as it moves north, it could produce dangerous conditions in parts of Georgia and southern South Carolina.
Dry wells (NYT) The water that lies beneath the earth’s surface—known as groundwater—has been a vital resource for thousands of years. Communities that are far away from lakes and rivers use groundwater to irrigate crops and provide drinking water. For most of human history, groundwater has existed in a convenient equilibrium. The pockets of water under the surface need years or decades to replenish as rainwater and other moisture seep into the earth. Fortunately, though, people have used groundwater slowly, allowing replenishment to happen. Now that equilibrium is at risk. Over the past 40 years, groundwater levels at most sites checked have declined. At 11 percent of the sites, levels last year fell to their lowest level on record. The U.S., in other words, is taking water out of the ground more quickly than nature is replenishing it. “There’s almost no way to convey how important it is,” Don Cline, the associate director for water resources at the United States Geological Survey, told The Times. Already, there are consequences. In parts of Kansas, the shortage of water has reduced the amount of corn that an average acre can produce. “We’ve built whole parts of the country and whole parts of the economy on groundwater, which is fine so long as you have groundwater,” journalist Chris Flavelle said. “I don’t think people realize quite how quickly we’re burning through it.”
The New Little Havana: Why Cuban Migrants Are Moving to Kentucky (NYT) At the first beats of “La Vida es un Carnaval” on a recent morning, several octogenarians in a senior center abandoned their dominoes, coloring books and crossword puzzles, and showed off their salsa moves. Nearby, at a ballet studio, little girls and boys in T-shirts inscribed with, “Que Siga La Tradicion,” or “Keep the Tradition Alive,” clapped as they shuffled forward and back to a pulsating Afro-Cuban rhythm. “Uno, dos, tres,” said their instructor, Selen Wilson Guerra, as she warmed them up for class. This was not Havana, or even Little Havana in Miami. It was Louisville, a city best known for bourbon, the Kentucky Derby and Muhammad Ali. Now it is home to the fastest growing Cuban community in the United States. In a landlocked state with cold, gray winters, Louisville may seem an unlikely destination for refugees from a tropical island. But its plentiful jobs, relatively low cost of living and nonprofit agencies that support newcomers are powerful magnets. Not to mention word of mouth from longtime Cuban residents. According to independent estimates, at least 30,000 Cubans call Louisville’s Jefferson County home, with much of the influx having arrived in the last two years as conditions deteriorated in their country.
US embassy in Haiti urges citizens to leave country 'as soon as possible' (Reuters) The U.S. Decades After Dictatorship, Chile Mounts Search for Hundreds Who Vanished (NYT) Thirty-six years after Fernando Ortíz’s abduction and disappearance, his family finally received his remains: five bone fragments in a box. Mr. Ortíz, a 50-year-old professor, was kidnapped in 1976 during the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet, rounded up with other communist leaders in Chile and sent to a torture center so secret that no one knew of its existence for three decades. He was one of 1,469 people who disappeared under Chile’s military rule from 1973 to 1990. Only 307 of them have been found and identified. Now, before the 50th anniversary of the coup that toppled one of Latin America’s most stable democracies and installed the 17-year dictatorship that imprisoned, tortured and killed thousands of its opponents, Chile plans a national search plan to track down the remaining disappeared. The measure marks the first time since the end of the Pinochet regime that the Chilean government has tried to find those who went missing—an effort that until now has largely fallen to the surviving family members, mainly women, who protested, went on hunger strikes and took their cases to court.
Air attack kills 2 in Kyiv while Russia accuses Ukraine of biggest drone attack of the war (AP) Russian officials on Wednesday accused Ukraine of launching what appeared to be the biggest nighttime drone attack on Russian soil since the war began 18 months ago. The Kremlin’s forces also hit Kyiv during the night with what Ukrainian officials called a “massive, combined attack” that killed two people. Drones struck hit an airport in western Russia’s Pskov region near the border with Estonia and Latvia, damaging four Il-76 transport aircraft that can carry heavy machinery, Russian state news agency Tass reported, citing emergency officials. The airport strike, which was first reported minutes before midnight, started a massive fire, the regional governor and local media reported. Media reports said up to 20 drones may have targeted the airport, damaging at least four cargo planes.
Ukraine counts the cost of fighting back (BBC) Ukraine treats its war casualty numbers as a state secret but recent reports have put the number of toops killed since Russia’s full-scale invasion as high as 70,000. In a brick mortuary near Donetsk, one of a number along the eastern front line, our correspondent Quentin Sommerville finds bodies “piled high”. At a desk, mortuary worker Margo faces the grim task of counting the dead. This was how she discovered her own partner had been killed. “The hardest is when you see a young guy who hasn’t even reached 20,” she says. “You cannot get used to this.” Outside, body bags are opened and wallets, phones and photos retrieved to identify the fallen. “This is difficult. Unpleasant. But we have to give the boys a proper send-off,” one officer says.
India lodges 'strong protest' over territory claims by China (BBC) India says it has lodged a "strong protest" with China over a new map that lays claim to its territory. Indian media have reported that the map shows the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh and the disputed Aksai Chin plateau as China's territory. India's protest comes days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on the sidelines of the Brics summit in South Africa. An Indian official said afterwards that the two countries had agreed to "intensify efforts at expeditious disengagement and de-escalation" along the disputed border. The source of the tension between the neighbours is a disputed 3,440km (2,100 mile)-long de facto border along the Himalayas—called the Line of Actual Control—which is poorly demarcated. The presence of rivers, lakes and snowcaps means the line can shift in places. China says it considers the whole of Arunachal Pradesh its territory, calling it "South Tibet"—a claim India firmly rejects.
U.S. engages in frank talks amid warnings China has become ‘uninvestible’ (Washington Post) Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo arrived in China this week with a challenging brief: Her department has implemented the United States’ tough export controls against China, and she had to stand firm on that position. At the same time, the former venture capitalist was seeking to advance a political thaw and improve American companies’ access to the lucrative Chinese market. For all the public smiles on both sides—including a surprisingly long meeting with China’s premier—one word hung over Raimondo’s four-day trip: “Uninvestible.” “Increasingly I hear from American business that China is uninvestible because it’s become too risky,” she said. “So businesses look for other opportunities; they look for other countries; they look for other places to go.” Three years of covid-related lockdowns snarled supply chains. Then came an unpredictable mix of raids on American businesses and opaque penalties—including the increasing use of exit bans against foreign business executives. Taken together, it has made foreign firms—not just U.S. ones—wary of continuing operations in China. In China’s words, it’s open for business. In actions, not so much. According to Naomi Wilson, vice president of policy, Asia and global trade at the Information Technology Industry Council, “Even among Chinese companies, there have been efforts to relocate outside of China.”
Israel Isn’t Earning Any Allies (BBC/Guardian) On Monday, Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah suspended Najla Mangoush, his own foreign minister, for meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen. Libya, like many other Arab states, does not recognize Israel diplomatically and is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause. Reports of the meeting were met with protests in the Libyan capital of Tripoli, and the Speaker’s Office in parliament accused Mangoush of grand treason. As news of the meeting between Israel and Libya broke, Syrian state media claimed that Israel’s military launched airstrikes on Aleppo International Airport. The airstrikes were reportedly aimed at the airport’s only operational runway and grounded all flights. This year alone, Israeli airstrikes on Syria’s airports have killed over a dozen people, and have shut down its two international airports multiple times. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), Israeli settler violence is rising to new highs. So far this year, OCHA has registered over 700 incidents of settler violence leading to Palestinian casualties, damage to property, or both. Israel has authorized 15 new settler outposts this year, and IDF forces have been known to stand by and watch as settlers attack the Palestinians. The U.N. and the rest of the international community don’t recognize settlements as legal.
Africa: A third of all people (Foreign Policy) Half of the global population growth from 2022 to 2050 will occur in sub-Saharan Africa. The region’s population is currently growing three times faster than the rest of the world, and by the end of the century, it will be home to a third of all people in the world, compared to only 14 percent in 2019. This means that the burden of rapid population growth will fall on some of the poorest countries in the world, with nearly half of the region having a gross national income per capita below $1,135, and in places that are among the most vulnerable to climate change.
Gabon Military Officers Say They Are Seizing Power (NYT) A group of senior military officers appeared on television in the oil-rich Central African nation of Gabon early Wednesday and announced they were seizing power, hours after the incumbent president, Ali Bongo Ondimba, was declared to have won a third term in office. The officers, who claimed to represent the major arms of the security forces, said they were canceling the results of the recent election, suspending the government and closing the country’s borders until further notice. Bursts of gunfire could be heard in the capital, Libreville, shortly after the broadcast ended, Reuters reported. The Bongos have ruled Gabon, a country of 2.3 million people on Africa’s Atlantic coast, for over half a century. Mr. Bongo, 64, was about to begin his third term since becoming president in 2009. He took over from his father, Omar Bongo, who had been in power since 1967.

Neon Troupe: Meet The Cast
(project intro) (written by an in-universe character, you'll see who they are :3)
I'm obligated to do this for... New hires. Here's everything which is need-know about the Contractors and some notable non-battlefield staff.
Alright first up, the Contractors, the people we've hired to fight the turf-war.
Offense:
Tumblr media
The Recon (he/him) A calico house cat from Scotland, their owner uplifted them in a bid to compete in cat shows of fellow uplifted cats. When it was obvious that his lust for blood and annoying attitude was too much, his owner instead trained him in firearms and flying to become a hired gun.
Tumblr media
The Chemist (he/him) He had always been an odd fellow. Having a tenure for a university in Russia, doing various under-the-table experiments and backalley chemistry projects, most of which were homicidal. When he needed money for said experiments, he decided to become a Contractor.
Tumblr media
The Demolisher (she/her) A quite large and friendly(ish) woman from Mesoamerica, she was conscripted some time ago into the military, then afterwards she used her demolition skills for a more productive purpose. After then getting replaced by robots, she gone and started blowing up production lines and robots left and right. We convinced her to take out her rage for a pay check.
Tumblr media
The Charger (he/him) A strange German man who seems almost hesitant about murder. From what we can tell, he invented his jets some years ago in a weird jousting competition hosted by him. After it got bloody, he decided his deadly skill in swords could be sold…
Defense:
Tumblr media
The Spark (she/them) Coming from Japan, we observed she had a flagrant disregard for other's safety if it fed her curiosity, or for her need to rant about electricity in others' ears. Despite quite a few of our staff objecting to having her hired, we decided the noise was worth it for a skilled contractor and someone who could fix the office's lights.
Tumblr media
The Exosuit (she/her) A quite lithe woman from Australia, she had been a computer scientist in college. Needing to do manual labor for money, she got her hands on an exosuit, but eventually that wasn't enough. Calling up one of her more physically minded friends, she slowly modified it into a killing machine. We also note she has a smoking problem…
Tumblr media
The Technician (they/them) Always the overachiever, they graduated from all branches of engineering in a university from Britain. Then they got drafted into the war, and used those PHDs for military research and military hardware. After it ended, and with a new taste for blood, they decided to hire their miracle skills out. We won't judge their financial decisions.
Tumblr media
The Caretaker (they/them) Alright, we honestly don't have much of an idea where this guy came from. Tracking the breeds of their animals, their clothing, and their equipment, they seem to be from the Exclusion Zone in Ukraine. The few times they speak, it's through a voice changer and either emotionless or highly passionate. We do know they spend their paycheck on their animals though.
Support:
Tumblr media
The Hunter (he/him) We've received multiple complaints about this guy. From the east coast of the US, he was a pro airsoft player. Eventually, he got bored and, after getting banned from tournaments for his modified rifle and his massive ego, hired himself into actual warfare. No, we're not firing him.
Tumblr media
The Nurse (she/her) From somewhere in the Caribbean, she became a pretty successful nurse, even when she had to take a week off for a drug trip. After losing her license through a count of murder, multiple counts of drug dealing, and a lot of drug (ab)use; she got into mercenary work despite seemingly having a genuine heart.
Tumblr media
The Trickster (they/them) From the few bits and pieces of history we can gather, this enigma seems to previously be a dancer from Canada. At least, we think, could be another of their tricks. Anyways, their skills in trickery and espionage seems to be unmatched. As their ingenuity, if their cloak and disguise tools are made by them.
Tumblr media
The Vandal (he/them) From the west-coast of the US, of our operating territory, comes this delinquent. His rage at the system landed him with a life sentence in prison. Though, our headhunters saw potential in him. We decided it was worth making various deals so as long as he's still with us, he isn't being hunted by the cops. Noted for his drinking problem, though, it seems he's mindful of not being drunk on the battlefield.
Special:
Tumblr media
The CEO (he/him) CEO of an oil company allied with us, small time politician, and the 37th recipient of the miracle body replacement. His faux-adventurous attitude is only superseded by his paranoia about how much money he has. While his consciousness is transferable, your paycheck is getting docked each time he has to replace his body.
Now as for our non-combatants, well, you might see some of them in the background. Please don't disturb them as either they're doing important work or on break.
Starting off with ones hired by ORG and PNK we have

The Hack (they/them) A small-time IT expert and cybercriminal in the newly made frontier of the internet. After they got into hot-water with too many international entities, we bailed them out in exchange for working with us. Got to cover all our bases (and we desperately needed someone who could navigate our server room).
Tumblr media
The Janitor (he/him) A quiet man without too much to say, drifting through the building cleaning up any mess that appears. He previously worked as a hired gun in the 60s, but those days are long passed and asking him about it gets nothing besides side-eye and a light grunt.
Tumblr media
The Secretary (she/her) A women hired by the CEO for his busy work and bookkeeping, she's barely out of college and already doing such big work. She seems always overworked and underpaid, relinquishing the moments of break she has. Also seems to like me a lot for no particular reason.
Tumblr media
The Courier (she/them) A crafty women, while quite young she is very good at what she does. Ie: Piloting drones for deliveries, mail, and notes from upper management. She's really quite jovial, gratingly so. While they haven't met yet, I expect her to be good friends with the Spark.
Now for the ones on our payroll, we have
Tumblr media
The Public Announcer (PA) (they/them) I'm not allowed to say much here. They're the one over the speakers managing the rounds and matches, announcing the state of the battlefield to our Contractors. (Though, off the record, I kind of hate them, and love them? I've said, too much so, will not be elaborating)
Tumblr media
The Proxy (he/him) That's me, hey there. I act as a middlemen and body guard for the PA, doing their wetwork and speaking directly to the Contractors. Off the books, I'm probably the most reasonable one here, even if that includes liking my (mildly homicidal) boss. Please… Don't let that get on record.
Tumblr media
The Therapist (one of: he/him, she/her, they/them) The company hired them more as a kind gesture then anything else really. This varying-gendered person does seem to be genuinely qualified and reasonably successful. Though, they seem overly unprofessional with our Contractors, and do a large amount of check ins with them without reason.
Tumblr media
The Dispatcher (any/all) Our quartermaster, tactician, strategist, and middle manager. She's quite an old hat in the business, having been in the parent companies to ours and even being the previous PA, til [REDACTED] took over. Nowadays they mostly drift around the office making small talk and constantly organizing and planning stuff.
Tumblr media
The Driver (he/him) Ah yes, the guy who picked you up. He's the one who transports important personnel and important packages with his quite fancy car (it's bulletproof too, don't ask me how i know). He's an ex-Mafia actually, but then he decided to look for bigger things...
Oh, and finally, there's someone I need to caution you against
Tumblr media
The Eye (???/???) Alright let me go off the books one more time, has anyone else seen this guy? Faded green suit, suitcase, fedora? I swear I've seen them watching the battlefield from a distance but besides faded Polaroids I haven't seen anyone mention them…
(and that's all of them! hope you like them and their emblems, as provided by @schmegaman-x!!) - Ξλ

In Port-au-Prince you cannot see the boundaries, but you must know where they are. Your life may depend on it. Competing gangs are carving up the Haitian capital, kidnapping, raping, and killing at will. They demarcate their territory in blood. Cross from one gang's turf to another, and you may not make it back.
Those who live here carry a mental map, dividing this teeming city into green, yellow, and red zones. Green means gang free, yellow can be safe today and deadly tomorrow, and red is a no-go area. The green area is shrinking as heavily armed gangs tighten their grip.
Armed groups control - and terrorise - at least 60% of the capital and its surroundings, according to Haitian human rights groups. They encircle the city, controlling roads in and out. And the UN says the gangs killed almost 1,000 people here between January and June of this year.
This report contains content which some readers may find upsetting, including sexual violence
Port-au-Prince is nestled between green hillsides and the blue waters of the Caribbean. It is blanketed by heat and neglect. The rubbish is knee-deep in places - a putrid monument to a crumbling state. There is no head of state (the last one was killed in office), no functioning parliament (gangs control the area around it) and the US-backed prime minister, Ariel Henry, is unelected and deeply unpopular.
In effect the state is missing in action, as the people suffer overlapping crises. Almost half the population - 4.7 million Haitians - are facing acute hunger. In the capital around 20,000 people are facing famine-like conditions, according to the UN. This is a first for the Americas. Cholera has made a deadly comeback. But armed gangs are the greatest plague.
They set the clock here. Morning rush hour - between 06:00 and 09:00 - is peak kidnapping time. Many are snatched from the streets on their way to work. Others are targeted in the evening rush hour - from 15:00 to 18:00.
About 50 of the staff at our downtown hotel live in because it's too dangerous for them to go home. Few here go out after dark. The manager says he never leaves the building.
Kidnapping is a growth industry. There were 1,107 reported cases between January and October of this year, according to the UN. For some gangs it's a major income stream. Ransoms can run from $200 (£164) to $1m (£819,740). Most victims come back alive - if the ransom is paid - but they are made to suffer.
"Men are beaten and burned with materials like melted plastic," says Gedeon Jean, of Haiti's Centre for Analysis and Research in Human Rights. "Women and girls are subject to gang rape. This situation spurs relatives to find money to pay the ransom. Sometimes kidnappers call the relatives so they can hear the rape being carried out on the phone."
Morning in Delmas
We travel around by armoured car. Normally that's reserved for frontlines in warzones like Ukraine, but it's necessary in Port-au-Prince to ward off kidnappers. It is a protection that many here can't afford. It's the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, prone to both natural and political disasters.
Kidnappers belong to competing gangs - which are mainly grouped into two large coalitions - G9 and G-Pep.

ONE BATTLE AT A TIME.
God has been trying to tell me, today I NEED to get back on the QUEEN THINGS.
My response is ONE BATTLE AT A TIME. As much as my 1st battle is ALREADY WON, no matter how oblivious these individuals want to act. Or try to cover their asses or go on cruise vacations. While I'm at a nursing home that is not even up to government standard and is still running after being closed. I STILL HAVE ALREADY WON.
#periodt.
But God has me out here talking about the Queen battle. Where I will be taking the lead on a battle that has been going on for CENTURIES. I get it. God made me untouchable for this very REASON. I mean I've NEVER had a broken limb in my life and the most surgical procedure I've had is stitches on my lips at 3/4/5 years old. So let these motherfuckers TRYYYY ME. Wait they already have. And think I was over so silence for now until they think they can neutralize me, like with certified insanity then DEATH. Therefore, stop sending their assassins, Jamaican military and MUCH MORE for now. BUT WAIT, I'm STILL ALIVE and I AM NOT MENTALLY ILL.
Anyway, as much as GOd came all:
God: Go use this....go and relax....go and observe Me: Okay whatever Then I ended up on TikTok and saw the diaspora wars between Americans and Jamaicans of the same ethnicity. In fact it's Americans and Caribbeans. Then I saw a video with a professor or someone of sorts, making a report on the fact that Jamaica was the worst to experience Slavery in the Caribbean and it was by the hands of the GREEDY BRITISH after Spain. Then further highlighting how Haiti fought for their freedom then FORCED by the major countries of the world who refuse to recognize them until they pay 100 MILLION FRANCS to FRANCE. THEN after paying over 100 years a President demanded it back and was assassinated then disregarded by their successor and it ended there. Me: Oh. That's why you choose Jamaica for the start and why you choose me. Plus that's why you make me untouchable. I want them try ME. I am UNTOUCHABLE. Send war and watch me walk on enemy turf unharmed, without a bruise or bullet wound. Machinery start malfunctioning or no one sees me. Or ask Charles. All the reports show I am untouchable and un poison-able. God: So what do you say? Me: ONE BATTLE AT A TIME.
I am only ONE PERSON. So ONE BATTLE AT A TIME.
I already have the 1st BATTLE with these individuals:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one is EASY, once the lawyer moves less Jamaicanly. I have ALL THE PROOFS, EVIDENCES and MUCH MORE.
ALL THEY HAVE DONE IS HIGHLY ILLEGAL. I knew this before. However, I was going to wait till I become QUEEN to deal with them the Old Testament way, because i CANNOT TRUST the Jamaican Judicial system. However, now that the LAWYER seems to be working,
I will let the LAW DEAL WITH THEM
And ALL those who choose to do their bidding (blindly or NOT), if they choose NOT to cooperate with me. (I DO NOT CARE WHO THEY WERE TO ME OR THAT THEY HELPED ME IN A DIFFICULT TIME)

As the causes of US inflation grow, so do the dangers (AP) What keeps driving inflation so high? The answer, it seems, is nearly everything. Supply chain snarls and parts shortages inflated the cost of factory goods when the economy rocketed out of the pandemic recession two years ago. Then it was a surge in consumer spending fueled by federal stimulus checks. Then Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted gas and food supplies and sent those prices skyward. Since March, the Federal Reserve has been aggressively raising interest rates to try to cool the price spikes. So far, there’s little sign of progress. High inflation has now spread well beyond physical goods to the nation’s vast service sector, which includes everything from dental care and apartment rents to auto repairs and hotel rates. The broadening of inflation makes it harder to tame. The Fed may have to jack up its key short-term rate even higher than had been expected—and keep it there longer—to curb inflation. Such action would mean even higher loan rates for consumers and businesses. It could also cause recessions in both the U.S. and global economies, international financial officials warn. Higher U.S. rates encourage investors to pull money from foreign markets and invest it in U.S. assets for a higher return, a shift that can cause upheaval in overseas economies.
Faith groups curb Haiti work due to chaos, 2021 kidnapping (AP) A year after 17 North American missionaries were kidnapped in Haiti, beginning a two-month ordeal before they ultimately went free, the agency that sent them hasn’t made a permanent return, and several other international groups have also scaled back their work there. The kidnapping underscored a deteriorating security situation that has worsened in the past year, with Haitian leaders calling for foreign troop deployments to help break the paralyzing grip of gang activity and protests. Currently, basic supplies such as fuel and water have dwindled since a powerful gang seized control of a main fuel terminal in the capital, Port-au-Prince. Demonstrators have blocked roads to protest a spike in fuel prices, and gas stations and schools have closed. Faith-based agencies are struggling to respond to Haiti’s plight. “There’s not a clear path forward,” said Alex Morse, deputy regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean for Church World Service, a partnership of more than 30 Christian denominations and communions in the U.S. that provides development assistance and disaster relief worldwide.
Larry the Cat chases much larger fox from Downing Street (Washington Post) A London fox is just the latest to learn what many animals in central London already know: Don’t mess with Larry the Cat. Larry, Downing Street’s “chief mouser,” made headlines in Britain this week when he chased off a fox prowling on his turf. Foxes in London are a thing. Thousands roam the streets. It’s not uncommon to see a blur of red fur late at night as foxes dart across a road, or to see eyes lighting up in the dark as they lurk behind rubbish bins, in search of scraps of discarded food. In Larry’s case, the fox was roaming around his patch outside of the prime minister’s residence at Downing Street when the cat went into full attack mode, chasing off an animal twice his size who fled into a flower bed before, wisely, getting out of there. Larry has also seen off several human members of the animal kingdom. He has stayed on at Downing Street through the premierships of David Cameron, Theresa May and Boris Johnson. Given the current political climate, some are wondering if it won’t be long before Larry sees Liz Truss chased off, as well.
Cornwall bus driver hands out 70 free roast dinners (BBC) A bus driver said he worked overtime to help provide 70 free roast dinners to help families struggling with the cost of living crisis. Josh Formby Hugh cooked all of the roast dinners in his kitchen at home. He handed out the meals in his home town of Camborne, Cornwall with help from his partner Emma and their children on Sunday. He also received assistance from a local supermarket and other people in the town. He told BBC Radio Cornwall: "I'm really conscious of the time that everybody's facing at the moment. "We're in an unprecedented situation where people struggle to heat their homes, to put food on their plates for their family and I think that's really sad and people need to get together to do something about that." He said: "There were some children that turned up, and they went to bed last night with a full tummy, and that's all that matters to me and my family."
France threw money at its energy crisis, but people are still angry (Washington Post) Few countries have taken bolder steps than France to shield their citizens from the impact of Europe’s energy crisis. But as Helene Bakker walked along an endless line of honking cars waiting for fuel at an overwhelmed gas station this week, she couldn’t help but wonder: Is it going to be enough? Drivers were shouting at each other as they inched toward a handwritten sign warning that there was “no more gasoline” at the station. Police officers carrying rifles struggled to calm tensions in the Neuilly-sur-Marne suburb just a 20-minute train ride from central Paris. Tires screeched as officers chased drivers who tried to cut in line. The fuel shortages in France this week were prompted by striking refinery workers demanding higher salaries, partly because oil and gas companies are making major profits from Europe’s surging energy prices. But the fuel shortages have become a powerful catalyst for a much broader sentiment: This is going to be a tough winter—but only for those who can’t afford it. “Rich people will always be able to get by,” said a retiree in her late 60s who spoke on the condition that she be identified only as Madame Chauvette. “But it hits the middle and the working class.”
Pending German recession? (Washington Post) Larger than Lower Manhattan, the sprawling BASF chemical plant on the Rhine River is a symbol of both German industrial might and how much Europe’s largest economy has to lose in its worst energy crisis in generations. On any given day, the plant uses more power than Switzerland as it churns out everything from rubber for sneakers to coatings for cars. But the fallout from the war in Ukraine is exacting a high price. During the second quarter of the year alone, sky-high natural gas prices jolted the company’s energy bill up by the equivalent of $776 million. Should energy availability in Germany turn critical in the coming months, Chief Executive Martin Brudermüller has warned, the company may have to shift more production to “plants outside of Europe.” Germany grew prosperous, establishing itself as the economic engine of Europe and the world’s fourth largest economy, by relying on the twin pillars of cheap Russian energy and manufacturing exports. But as the German economy sputters—threatening to drag down Europe with it—the economic model that gave rise to Germany, Inc. has been thrown into doubt. Before the war, Russia supplied more than half of the natural gas used in Germany—for industrial production, to heat homes and to generate electricity. Now, with the main pipeline from Russia shut off, Germany has had to seek other suppliers, and is paying 7 to 10 times last year’s prices. Economists say Germany is poised for recession next year—the International Monetary Fund predicts it could suffer the worst hit among major economies other than Russia.
Ukrainian deminers remove deadly threats to civilians (AP) Beside an abandoned Russian military camp in eastern Ukraine, the body of a man lay decomposing in the grass—a civilian who had fallen victim to a tripwire land mine set by retreating Russian forces. Nearby, a group of Ukrainian deminers with the country’s territorial defense forces worked to clear the area of dozens of other deadly mines and unexploded ordnance—a push to restore a semblance of safety to the cities, towns and countryside in a region that spent months under Russian occupation. The deminers, each with a metal detector in hand, slowly advanced up the road, scanning the ground and waiting for the devices to give a signal. When one detector emitted a high tone, a soldier knelt to inspect the mud and grass, probing it with a metal rod to see what might be buried just below the surface. The detector’s hit could indicate a spent shell casing, a piece of rusting iron or a discarded aluminum can. Or, it could be an active land mine. “One year of war equals 10 years of demining,” the commander of the demining unit said. “Even now we are still finding munitions from World War II, and in this war they’re being planted left and right.”
Death toll rises to 40 in Turkey coal mine explosion (AP) The death toll from a coal mine explosion in northern Turkey rose to at least 40 people Saturday, officials said. Desperate relatives had waited all night in the cold outside the state-owned TTK Amasra Muessese Mudurlugu mine in the town of Amasra, in the Black Sea coastal province of Bartin, hoping for news. There were 110 miners working in the shaft when the explosion occurred Friday evening. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said Saturday that 40 miners were confirmed dead. Eleven were injured and hospitalized, while 58 others managed to get out of the mine on their own or were rescued unharmed. The status of one remaining miner was unclear.
China’s Xi looks to 3rd 5-year term as Communist Party meets (AP) On the eve of the opening of a key Chinese Communist Party congress, party leader, head of state and commander of the armed forces Xi Jinping seems more in charge than ever, having given no indication of stepping away from power or anointing a successor. Xi had given few signs during his steady rise through the ranks of the party that he would develop into one of modern China’s most dominant leaders, or that he would put the economically and militarily ascendant country on a collision course with the U.S.-led international order. Those illusions have been all but swept away, however, ahead of the century-old party’s opening of its 20th congress Sunday. What’s not clear is how long he will remain in power, and what that means for China and the world.
Iranian protesters defy crackdown with nationwide demonstrations (Reuters) Protesters across Iran defied a nearly month-long crackdown on Saturday, activists said, chanting in the streets and in universities against the country's clerical leaders in a sustained wave of anger at the death of Mahsa Amini. The protests sweeping Iran since Amini—a 22-year-old woman from the country's Kurdish region—died on Sept. 16 while being held for "inappropriate attire" pose one of the most serious challenges to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution. Although the unrest does not appear close to toppling the system, the protests have widened into strikes that have closed shops and businesses, touched the vital energy sector and inspired brazen acts of dissent against Iran's religious rule. Human rights groups say more than 200 people have been killed in the crackdown nationwide, including teenage girls whose deaths have become a rallying cry for more demonstrations demanding the downfall of the Islamic Republic.
