Cancer is most known as the mother hen, the "mom friend", or sometimes as the moody or grumpy type. Below I dive into some of their core traits and explore the Cancer character.

Protective or Cautious: Cancers tend to be highly private, secretive, guarded, shy, reserved, or maybe mysterious. They are protective not only of their inner world, vulnerabilities, and feelings but of their loved ones. Sometimes their protection can feel smothering or possessive, other times they can be primal, fierce guardians with the knowledge of a healer or advisor. But with this intense protection can come a person who is naturally hesitant and careful. They can be big worriers, can have an active imagination, and while thoughtful and intuitive, can easily fool or scare themselves. Thankfully this sign tends to be highly introspective, but they shouldn't be overly careful or defensive when it comes to healthy growth.

Emotional: This is too wide of a topic to really distill down for Cancer, they and the rest of the water signs approach the world emotionally. They are sensitive, possibly empathetic. For water signs emotions can be limitless - manifesting as passion and heat which astrologers typically use to describe Scorpio. Emotions can be forever flowing and unpredictable which we see a lot in Pisces. Cancer's emotions rage, calm, destroy, and create, and all of this tends to be hidden behind a very calm, private, or stern exterior. This subtle or hidden depth can create emotional appeal for some. For others Cancer may come off as unwelcoming, judgmental, or possibly even boring or unconfident. But Cancer's understanding, adaptable, and caring traits usually make them approachable and trustworthy (especially Cancer Suns and Risings). There is a dismissive feel to calling Cancer simply "emotional" when their emotions aren't a definition but their fuel and power. This can hold true for all water signs, but with a focus on Cancer water is cardinal - it takes action, leads, fights, and controls many times in the family and home. But this more driven nature likely exists in very private or personal spaces that don't have to always include family.

Shrewd and Intuitive: Cancer is sometimes described as frugal, practical, observant, or providing. They have a strong sense of self-preservation and there is a keenness about them that I notice is hard or inconsistent to describe in books and among astrologers. It may be through Cancer's nurturing trait that they take on a more realistic approach or perspective and is always on top of things. I think Cancer's intuition also plays a big role in their problem-solving, identity, and cardinal nature. They may live by it.

It amazes me when I think about how Cancers and Capricorns are mirror signs, and that they tend to fall into toxic relationships based on the same experiences.
