✨ How I Learnt To Find My Voice ✨
Tumblr media
Speaking my truth is more important than the fear of making a fool of myself. This is something that I’m desperately trying to teach myself. With everyday that passes I grow and evolve, becoming a person almost unrecognizable even to myself; a better person. However, to say that the insecurities and anxiety that once plagued my each and every day have been left behind would be a gross understatement.
I’ve never been a confident person. I’m loud and energetic, but confident I am not. I’m not the kind of person who could soberly get up and dance in a bar or club. I’m not the type of person that can get up in front of a group of people and talk or perform without having minor heart palpitations. If I walk into a room full of people wearing a new outfit I immediately feel as if every eye is judging me. I’m not a confident person, it’s safe to say. Perhaps it’s because I have, until now, never truly felt comfortable in my own skin, and therefore assumed that everyone else saw me the way that I did; mediocre and average at best. Perhaps I worried that they could see my plump stomach under my shirt, or that their eyes focused a little too long on my long-forgotten eyebrows that are simply longing to be plucked. Maybe they notice that my dance-moves aren’t in rhythm with the song playing, or god-forbid they disagree with anything that I say.
It is for this reason that I’ve spent much of my adult life sitting in silence, accepting things that I likely should never have accepted in the first place. It’s simple really; fear. The thought of not being liked, or for someone to find even the smallest issue with me, terrified me. Confrontation was never an easy thing for me to deal with, and I fought with myself every single day to keep my opinions quiet, only sharing what I believed in from the other side of a computer screen. Perhaps that, at the end of the day, is why I became a writer - my opinions matter when no one can actually see me when I make them known.
It’s strange then that it was confrontation itself that finally helped me on the path to finding even just a small amount of confidence. A helpless situation where I was forced to find that path, eagerly edging me towards becoming a person that is able to stand up for herself, to see the rights and wrongs in the world and say with utter conviction what her beliefs truly are, without the fear of being overlooked or contradicted.
Everything is a learning curve when you’re on a journey to becoming a new person. When you are growing, healing, and evolving past everything that was within your knowledge before, within your comfort zone, every single day brings with it a new lesson. But those lessons are not final. You cannot change your way of thinking overnight, change into the person that you want to be within the blink of an eye. As wondrous as that sounds, it simply isn’t realistic. It takes time, energy, determination, and a lot of focus to become better, to become the new version of yourself, and you always have to start from scratch.
For me, the starting point was finding that confidence within me and letting it out of the little cage that I had been keeping it in. I tried new things. Broke down my walls and let new people enter my life. Found love in things that I used to be so passionate about once again. Started standing up for myself against words that I would once have pretended I hadn’t heard.
It’s a process, a step-by-step journey, not a dive head-first into the deep end. I look at the people around me, people who simply exude confidence as if it is a natural part of their being, and I feel an ounce of jealousy that I am not at that stage yet. But that is ok. I’m getting there. And every single step counts.
