PT6 - COM01 (School Performance Task)
Commercial 1 (BLACK LIVES MATTER, NIKE)
For the first commercial that was released on the 29th of May, 2020, Nike issued a commercial in which it goes against their famous tagline, “Just Do It” to “Don’t Do It”. The reason for this is that there was an immoral behaviour that caused mass hysteria in America that involved a black man and a cop in a video that showcased police brutality. Nike targeted this commercial not only to its general audience (consumers of the brand), but also to everyone who has seen the video to stop tolerating racism, and raise awareness about the innocent lives that were taken due to police violence. It was a wake-up call that Nike decided to advertise, and it was a courageous act from them to create a commercial that talks about a sensitive topic. The advert isn’t necessarily good nor appropriate to appear in a public domain for younger audiences to see, however, it is a valuable lesson to teach children that there should be no space for racism. In contrast to other commercials, this one in particular doesn’t seem to have any media manipulation, as its only job is to spread awareness. It also successfully captured the attention of its viewers since Nike sent a clear message that they wanted to convey, and that message needed to be heard. It is unfortunate that an advert like this exists because it gave a reason to exist.

Commercial 2 (STAY HOME, IKEA)
For the second commercial that was released on the 24th of March, 2020, IKEA produced an advert that seems to be all about houses being indirectly sentient and that it has significance towards their owners in a way that it’s like a parent to their child. IKEA targeted this advertisement to everyone in the world. There is no specific audience for this commercial, as it is fitting for all viewers at the time, because the whole world was suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. The advertisement shows that no matter what happens, your house will always be there. It worked in their favour, as releasing such commercials in the time of the pandemic was perfect and appropriate for its time. It also was an advantage towards their audience, as staying home was the most noble thing to do to avoid catching the illness, and that staying home, even without the pandemic, has its own benefits. There might be a form of media manipulation for this one, but it is not necessarily something that is worthy to point out as a whole. I believe that there’s some sort of propaganda in the commercial. Not all houses that some people have had experienced in their lives were good, so the message that IKEA was trying to impart lands flat towards other viewers. In short, yes, the advert was intended for everyone as it was needed to stay home to avoid COVID-19, but it is also not made for some people as not all houses can be considered as a home, metaphorically, I might add.

Digital Citizenship and Intersectionality
Upon reading the article by Choi and Cristol titled “Digital citizenship with intersectionality lens: Towards participatory democracy driven digital citizenship education” from the journal titled Theory Into Practice, I gained insight into digital citizenship as a concept, and how it "has been emphasized in academia and utilized as a significant part of many school systems' mission statements" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Digital Citizenship is defined as the "responsible use of technology" by individuals using any digital device that allows them to engage in a public sphere or online discourse, particularly via the Internet (Zook 2022). One of the major key concepts that users must consider when approaching digital citizenship is empathy, as it makes them more responsible when communicating online (Zook 2022).
The BLM [Black Lives Matter] movement and the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrates the need to recognize just how people can so differently experience social inequities, based on their "intersectional social identity attributes [such as] race, ethnicity, gender, class, age, and sexuality" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Intersectionality is key to understanding current political and social issues and online activities on a critical level, and is "the primary goal of digital citizenship education" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Three major recommendations are discussed in this journal regarding digital citizenship education, including; a unidimensional approach, a multidimensional approach, and a critical and radical approach.
Unidimensional approach (Choi & Cristol 2021)
Refers to approaching digital citizenship with a focus on the disciplines, such as journalism, political sciences, education or communication channels.
"Focusing on one aspect of digital citizenship" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Educational scholars focus on how media influences people's perceptions and behaviours, and imagines what an "appropriate [or] democratic use of the internet and social media" could be, in the context and interest of protecting young people online (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Multidimensional approach (Choi & Cristol 2021)
This refers to the idea of classifying digital citizenship into four different categories, including; 'digital ethics, media and information', 'literacy', 'participation/engagement', and 'critical resistance'.
This idea compares what was previously understood about digital citizenship by "connecting face-to-face interactions and online environments" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Critical and radical approach (Choi & Cristol 2021)
This approach highlights the need to emphasise more radical and critical elements of digital citizenship, which appears to be popular with today's youth regarding political activism.
It is considered a justice-oriented type of citizenship, meaning typically passionate individuals engaging in discourse that stands up for people's rights (e.g. @AOC or @genzforchange on Instagram)
My understanding is that it typically embraces marginalised communities, and is mostly what we see emerging online. It includes marginalised groups such as "race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and religion who are often denies full rights of citizenship and... discourse" (Choi & Cristol 2021).
Digital citizenship is an ever-evolving discourse and is more prevalent than ever, with a critical and radical approach appearing to be quite popular within younger and marginalised communities online.

Six Tips for Video Conferencing
I'm grateful for an increased openness for individuals and organisations to communicate more via video conferencing technology since the COVID-19 pandemic.
For me, it opened up opportunities to work with organisations globally, from the comfort of my home and without leaving a carbon footprint from travel—both of which are important to me. For others, it opened opportunities to relocate and work from home or abroad, meet family and friends from a distance, use healthcare and coaching services from around the globe, and interview from a distance. Brilliant! On the downside, it can be incredibly draining.
Meeting one-to-one isn't too bad, but something more complicated, such as delivering a presentation or interviewing online, requires much cognitive energy—if you want to do it well. During in-person presentations and training, you need to present well verbally and nonverbally and interpret your audience and adapt accordingly—easy (with practise😉)! With online training, you do all that, switching between learning resources like slides and videos, navigating questions in chat and ensuring videos are visible, audible, and not pixelated.
Moreover, scanning your audience is only an option sometimes, depending on your platform and setup. It's also difficult to make eye contact due to the camera location. Team that with Australia's poor internet capability, and voila, you might have a recipe for disaster. This is multitasking on many levels, and research has found we can't multitask. You can't be present in all of these areas at once–moving your attention around to navigate online conferencing demands more cognitive effort. It can be difficult and exhausting, but awareness and preparedness are essential.
Here, I'll share some video conferencing tips and more general behaviour-related tips that should help you navigate your call and deliver your message more effectively.
Video Conferencing Tips
Making a Good Impression
How you show up is essential in creating a good impression, so be prepared and take some time to compose yourself. Pay attention to your appearance too–are you sufficiently groomed and appropriately dressed? Take a few minutes of slow breathing beforehand to feel calm, collected, and prepared to be present. Check in advance how you’ll appear on camera and position it appropriately. Ensure your mic and headphones are working, and turn your camera on. Be present during the meeting, actively listening and responding. Most of these rules apply to in-person meetings too.
Framing the Camera
The camera should be head height, facing forward. Status perceptions can change if your camera looks down on you or up at you because that’s how clients and colleagues view you. Tilting your screen and raising or lowering your device to find the right view can make an incredible difference to how you appear and instantly create a better impression. Allow your clients/colleagues to see enough of you to elicit trust and connection. That means being close enough to be a significant part of the view, yet not so close that you’re a floating face, and not too far in the distance that the room becomes the focus. Ideally, your head should be at camera height, with your torso and arms visible. 
Avoid Distractions
Turn off distractions (including incoming emails and reminders) to be present and respectful. Phone and computer notifications can distract others too, interrupting their thought and speech. If you’re expecting an important call, consider its importance within context. If it can wait, silence your phone. If it can’t wait, explain in advance. 
Avoid Negative Behaviours
Stress and blocking behaviours are common behaviours that can create negative perceptions. The most common blocking behaviour is arm crossing which occurs as we experience slight discomfort. It feels comfortable for the user; however, it’s perceived as less open and welcoming. Because how we use body language influences our feelings, the user may feel less open to ideas. All of this occurs below the surface of consciousness. 
Common stress behaviours such as face and neck touching, fidgeting and repetitive movements like swinging in a chair or swaying on your feet show nervousness or irritability and are associated with low credibility. Due to contagious emotions, they can affect the feelings of others, leaving them with a less positive experience as they interact with you. 
Subconsciously, these behaviours bring comfort, helping to pacify uncomfortable feelings. While there’s nothing wrong with them per se, they can be distracting for others and create negative perceptions. With awareness—most people don’t realise they indulge in them—these behaviours can be managed over time to the point where they disappear. They can be managed within the moment too. In most professional situations, it’s essential to conceal stress and nervousness because it affects perceptions of credibility. If you don’t appear confident in what you’re saying, why should anyone buy into you? 
Avoid Slides
Many people presenting online put up their slides and disappear, or float in a smaller window, leaving their slides to present for them as they lose their audience in an accentuated case of death by PowerPoint. The presenter is the presenter, and slides are a tool, so be front and centre. It can be a similar scenario during an in-person presentation where slides are overused; however, the presenter has more of a presence in person.
Slides should always be kept to a minimum and virtually wordless, more so online. Their purpose is to support the presenter's words to aid understanding of concepts, just like an 'illustrator', for example, a hand gesture which describes a concept alongside words. The presenter is critical for engagement and understanding, so they should be the session's focus.
My solution is to only show a handful of slides throughout the presentation, dipping in and out when needed so that you remain the presenter and maintain engagement. Keeping a full deck of slides open on your screen (for only you to see) can be beneficial for keeping you on track. This all adds to cognitive demand; however, it makes your presentation more effective and engaging.
Display Positive Behaviours
Smile
Smiling is a friend signal. It puts people at ease via a physiological response, facilitating harmony and connection. It’s polite and always important as a greeting, helping create a good impression and positive emotion (for the user and audience). Once greetings are complete, let your facial expression do its own thing—if you’re being honest, your expression will follow your emotions, responding to what you hear and say with authenticity. Vocal Power
Speak clearly and loud enough to be heard easily, without shouting. Avoid problematic speech, such as mumbling, having a monotone voice, or speaking too fast or quietly. Learn more about vocal power here.
Good Posture
Maintain an open and upright posture to display warmth, openness and approachability and to elicit feelings of trust from your audience. If you’re presenting, I recommend standing. This should keep you more alert and will help you to avoid slouching.
Eye Contact
Eye contact is problematic during online conferencing due to camera location; however, speaking to the camera instead of the screen at strategic points will help maintain the perception of eye contact, for example, at the start of the conference call/presentation.
Hand Gestures
Use hand gestures to increase engagement and understanding. Hand gestures add meaning to speech, visually describing specific words or following the flow, helping people understand where you’re up to during communication. Description:
2020 is a year that changed all Kiwi lives. Covid 19 hit and Aotearoa was thrown into lockdown, the daily number of cases, weeks locked in our bubbles, mounting redundancies, or the unknown number of families that would lose their livelihoods weighed heavily. So we decided together, our team of 130 was in a unique position to help the team of 5 million. There was no playbook and we had no idea what to expect. When lockdown forced New Zealand to a grinding halt, no one felt the economic burden more than our SMEs. Instinctively, we knew SMEs badly needed local support, and this was substantiated through research. Many had made huge personal and financial sacrifices to establish and maintain their successful brands. However, few were prepared for the impact of COVID-19 and many had to close, impacting their incomes, savings, assets, relationships and mental health. Small businesses – the backbone of our economy – were in turmoil and needed help. As an independent local business, we were in a unique position to do the right thing and offer our assistance. We took the initiative and developed a brief, got together and worked a plan late into the night. Working with local businesses, we identified their key needs and how we could help. With a sense of urgency and mission, we crafted a national campaign and usable resources, all in 12 days whilst under level 4 lockdown ourselves. We crafted a campaign in two parts:
One – A national mass-media campaign to persuade Kiwis to support their local businesses Two – Free resources for businesses, to help them through the hard times
Support Local, Shop Local became the national rallying call around which we built our messaging. We crafted a visually simple campaign, executed in stark black and white (to save on costs for all involved) and brought to life with friendly, charming illustrations and writing. To shift consumer behaviour in such unprecedented times, we needed total coverage. Our media partners around the nation heard the call – Television, newspapers, video on demand, out of home, social media, digital and many more… totalling over $1million, all for free. The movement was underway. We mobilised teams around the country to create a suite of tools for SMEs to access and use. This became a central website that hosted interviews and advice with key business leaders, information and downloadable toolkits – all free of charge. Aligned to the national campaign, the toolkits featured printable posters and stickers, plus social media templates, digital assets and more – all encouraging people to support local, shop local. The campaign went nation-wide, Kiwis heard the call and rallied around their local businesses. 38,500 businesses accessed the website, and using our resources, 69% reported an earnings increase averaging over $5000 each. 97% of businesses reported the toolkits to be useful. And whilst these numbers are important, our priority is always with the people of Aotearoa and their livelihoods.

This is a valued approach that established itself at the appropriate time mobilising a movement of support across the country. It would be an easily adaptable method for a large sum of local business in need of support to become apart of and raise awareness in communities nationwide.

Kashmir witnesses spurt in influenza cases

Srinagar, Dec 10 (GNS): Kashmir Valley has reported a spurt in influenza cases this season compared to previous two years. Experts said that in the last nearly two months, there has been an increase in upper respiratory and lower respiratory tract infection cases. “Patients typically have fever, cough, sore throat and runny or stuffy nose,” they said. However, they said, most patients recover with treatment. They said apparent reasons are likely weather driven. “The air is cooler and less humid, which can help some viruses grow and spread more easily and thereby increase the number of viral infections.” Top Kashmir pulmonologist and Head of the Department at Chest Disease Hospital Srinagar, Dr Naveed Nazir Shah, told GNS that of late there has been an “unprecedented” rise in the respiratory infections. “In view of covid appropriate behaviour (CAB), the incidences of other respiratory infections were less but since the end of third Covid-19 wave, there has been an unprecedented rise in respiratory infections not only in elderly but in young,” he said, adding, “most of infections were due to viral infections.” The experts urged people to take precautions and if needed, visit a doctor instead of self medication. “During winter, there is normally an increase in such infections. This is what we are seeing now. We are doing an analysis of the patients coming with pneumonia to ascertain the aetiology.
