oh i just think the metaphor is bullshit because no one in this fandom understands what it means to be a canary in a coal mine, and they've fundamentally warped the understanding of the metaphor to force it to fit jimmy.

a) the canary does not have a choice. the canary is trapped, and its only purpose is to die. calling jimmy a canary removes his agency in the death game he willingly signed up to play and actively participates in. calling jimmy a canary implies that everyone else is forcing him to be there, and that he doesn't know what's going on. even if the rest of the metaphor fit, and to be clear, it doesnt, thats still such a shitty way to refer to the guy. the fandom completely robbed him of his agency.

b) the people holding the canary know the situation is dangerous. a coalmine is dangerous. the canary's death isn't a wakeup call that the place is falling apart- they already know that. the canary is meant to show when its gotten too bad to stand anymore. you could argue that being a first death mimics that, but i think its a weak point that doesnt meet the other criteria because

c) this is where i think the whole metaphor falls apart. the purpose of the canary is to get everyone out alive. the canary's death does not signal something worse. the canary's death does not signal that everyone else is a goner. the canary's death is meant to protect people. at no point after jimmy's death does the server realize it as a wakeup call to get out, which fundamentally misunderstands the purpose of a canary. canaries die so that people can live, which is antithetical to the life series, where people die so people can die.

you could treat jimmy as a subversion if you really wanted to stretch, but no one is treating it as a subversion. a canary in a coalmine is a VERY specific metaphor and the fact that its been warped to fit this story is something i think is dumb as fuck. fandom has, in my opinion correctly, realized that when jimmy dies things start to pop off, but they misattribute it to being a canary when that's not what a canary does and that's not how coalmines work. jimmy is more akin to a turning point or a harbinger than a fucking canary.

When my mother was first dating my father, and into the early years of their marriage, she'd wanted to get into commercial art. A little later, she tried her hand at writing romance novels. She had a lot of energy for it--I remember how she filled up stacks of yellow legal pads.

But on both occasions, my father discouraged her--he constantly nitpicked at any small mistakes he could find, or otherwise just insulted her as not being sufficiently intelligent or talented.

Fast-forward to my late teens. It's my senior year of high school, and I'm looking at getting into culinary arts. I was constantly baking goodies up at home, and my mother's coworkers ate a lot of cookies as a result. But when I told her I might make a career of it, she told me it was a bad fit because it would be disastrous to my health and that I'd probably fail as a result of the teamwork required. So, I chose psychology instead. Again, she discouraged me--more or less told me that anything interpersonal would be a sure route to failure--and insisted that I stick to the neuroscience side of things.

Both what my father did to her, and what she did to me were dead wrong.

So now, anytime I hear someone say a parent or significant other is discouraging them from creative passions and pursuits or from doing things that might actually help them overcome anxious shortcomings...to say I get angry would be putting it very politely.

Panicked outrage is probably a more adequate descriptor. Because it's criminal for those who are supposed to support you the most to turn around and sow doubts instead, which will later in life sprout and blossom into full fledged regret.

And the reasons for that discouragement are almost always terribly selfish, if not an outright precursor to even worse treatment.

my favourite metric for evaluating gacha games is the eizen scale. eizen is a character from the game tales of berseria who is essentially cursed to always lose the coinflip, which means that "can eizen play this game and not have a horrendous time" is a very easy way to determine how "generous" any given digital casino actually is and how robust its rng safety nets are. for purposes of the eizen scale this is how eizen's luck works:

1) eizen has the worst possible luck that statistics allow for. if he flips a coin a million times he will get tails a million times. if he has a 99.9% crit chance he will not crit. if resource gathering involves random drops he will always get the lowest possible amount of drops. he will roll the worst most useless possible result from the gacha every time. eizen's only path to obtaining anything useful in the game is through guarantees, handouts, and pity mechanics. going by his actual canon luck the game would crash repeatedly the moment he hits pity and then his account gets banned for suspicious activity before he gets to see the result but for purposes of the eizen scale we assume the game itself works properly.

2) eizen’s bad luck does not affect his friends’ luck, and he often relies on his friends to push through his bad luck. you can get caught in the fallout of eizen's bad luck if you throw your lot in with his (like going on a sea voyage with him and inevitably getting caught in a storm), but just having him around doesn’t keep you from getting heads on your own coin flip. this means ease of access to luckier friends’ resources is one of the metrics on the eizen scale. combined with point 1, if a game for example has a support unit system that shows you a random selection with no guarantee that at least one of those will be your friends, it's completely useless to him because it will only show him randos with trash units.

3) eizen’s bad luck does not affect the choices other people make. this means the game’s content release schedule will not contort itself into ridiculous patterns just to deny eizen the chance to obtain game resources, because its run by people who have other goals than making eizen specifically suck at their game.

some video games are fundamentally unplayable to eizen because the core gameplay premise is about performing and then working around feats of rng, like roguelikes for example, so a bad eizen score is not necessarily a bad game. but this man is the canary in the coalmine of exploitative monetisation, and if he can't play the game then maybe you shouldn't either

Obsessed with how in the short term while they're still in the wilderness, Jackie's ghost is punishing, belittling, seductive and harsh. but in the adult timeline, after Shauna has been able to put (some, barely, but some) distance between herself and the rage and resentment, Jackie's ghost only ever shows as a warning, gentle but firm, a canary in the coalmine trying to tell Shauna to slow down, to breathe, not to go too fast or too deep or to be reckless.

Someone is going to get hurt. In other words, the Jackie that haunts Shauna at some point morphs away from a way for Shauna to pour salt into her own wounds and back into the Jackie that Shauna loved, the one that loved her. I'll never have another friend like you. We were kids, and it was awful.

What are your thoughts on LO Krokos and LO Ampelus (Psyche) ?

These two male mythological figures, who had a gay relationship with gods, turned into female characters ! If they weren't included (especially since Dionysus is still a baby here), I wouldn't mind. But just using those names like that TWICE is strange, right ?

It's also weird how LO turns two virgin goddesses into lesbians, but don't even implement the canon gay relationships.

Can you find an explanation?

I mean I can't really offer an explanation because obviously I have no way of really seeing into Rachel's head, but it's definitely a choice that she's taken so many gods and characters from Greek myth and turned them into something else entirely, it feels very random and, in the case of the gods who were canonically gay/queer/etc. ... it's hard to ignore and give benefit of the doubt.

Another example is Persephone's therapist, Chiron, who's not just gender bent, but also put into the role of being a therapist ?? Which is like, okay, fine, but like... what is this accomplishing besides vaguely referencing Chiron's affiliation with medicine LOL

(this wound up turning into a bit of an essay so I'm including a jump to make it easier for scrollers lol)

To me, it just feels like it really cements Rachel as not being as well-read in Greek myth as she claims to be, because so much of the actual Greek myth in this comic is either taken directly from first results on Google (see: Zeus' definition of xenia which is taken straight from a Princeton study guide from 2004) and slapped haphazardly into the comic where it's convenient, OR it's just vaguely referenced at even if it's not being properly utilized (like she saw 'Chiron, wise centaur' and went "yeah cool she can be the therapist character!"). I have zero explanation or even assumption as to why she'd turn Crocus, a male lover of Hermes, into Krokos the flower nymph, or why she'd choose to use Ampelus as the name Psyche adopts after being turned into a nymph (which also didn't happen in the original myth). These are "creative choices" that come across as less creative and more just random attempts to make her seem smart.

Like, to a surface level reader or someone who's new to the series, it might seem neat and subversive (it definitely did to me back when I started reading and fell in love with it), but then you actually get further in and peel back the layers and go, "wait, she's just grabbing Greek names that are affiliated with real Greek heroes and gods and characters at random-" and it gets especially ick when it commits queer erasure in the process.

Don't get me wrong, I think having fun with character designs and swapping them or changing them up is perfectly fine, that's the fun of re-interpreting old stories, it's not that on its own that's the issue. It's just that these re-interpreted characters have literally NOTHING to do with the characters that she's basing them on. At least in Punderworld where Charon is a woman, she's still a psychopomp who ferries souls to the Underworld, her being gender-bent doesn't change much because her character and role in the story is still largely the same. Or like in Hadestown how the Underworld is more of a coalmine with Hades running it as a business, instead of the River Styx being a literal river it's a brick wall that protects the Underworld from outsiders ("and they call it freedom"). In both of these examples, they're taking the source material and making it fun and new, while still respecting the source material they're taking it from and keeping it on theme with that source material.

By comparison, Rachel just creates these character references and that's where it ends, they're just references and they don't do anything new or interesting with them, they're not even adjacent to what they're referencing. So we wind up with Chiron being a therapist, Ampelus being the nymph version of Psyche, the Fates looking and acting the exact same as each other even though they had different roles to play between Past, Present, and Future, and Aphrodite's children who... are literally made up from scratch, instead of pulling from the actual real children that Aphrodite had loads of in the original myths.

So many of Rachel's writing choices feel like attempts to be "subversive" when they're not, they're just random. Nothing about the things she changes from the original source material does anything to further explore that source material, it's just yoinking things at random to try and seem more Greek while also further separating her work from legitimate Greek culture. Even when you THINK something is about to be retold in an interesting way, it's very promptly either swept under the rug or veered off in a whole other direction that makes zero sense for what it set up (ex. Echo, what the fuck happened to Echo-)

It's very "ideas first, structure never" writing, she comes up with standalone ideas that sound good in isolation, until she actually tries to execute them and connect them and you realize they have no through line or reason to exist the way they do. It's giving real hard "first draft" vibes, so much of what Rachel chose to do should have been left on the cutting room floor (meanwhile the things that supposedly did get left on the cutting room floor SHOULD HAVE BEEN KEPT IN THE COMIC, ex. Hera's coat prophecy, Hades and Persephone having a date in the Underworld where she decides she might want to go into law, etc.)

Ugh. This got longer than I intended it to. It's just frustrating. I have inspiration to write that essay about queer erasure in LO now, at least. So yeah, hold on tight for that one LMAO

Jimmy DID fulfill the canary curse. Technically, he was the second out, but the end- the void- is a separate domain entirely to the coalmine of the canary. Lizzie tried to utilize a power that wasn't her own to fulfill mortal goals, and she faced the consequence of a will beyond that of the players on the server. But Jimmy still died next, the first death in the domain of players, the canary in the coalmine dying to symbolize the danger of red chaos approaching, completely separate from Lizzie's mishandling of a world she holds no power in. A canary can't protect you if you leave the coalmine.

the cursed dice angle is so good, the way the statement giver took on that role (roll), played the part, UGH it's so fun. the theme of choice that was brought up is also so good- just. continuing on my stuff about the entities in tmagp- once again some things here feel very on the nose, particularly the statement giver literally calling himself a mysterious stranger. this feels like a fun little red herring to me, for people a bit hung up on the entities stuff. that's how i interpreted it, anyways. i wanna know more about this world so fucking bad, dude.

also, the institute's in manchester in tmagp, not chelsea/london. which means no milbank prison, no panopticon. interesting. (though soemthing that was known from the arg already- i really need to deep dive on that. tomorrow, maybe.) statement taking and artifact storage are still a thing, evidently, but noting that there's no mention of an archivist or anything like that. and the subject/agent/catalyst stuff, that's Very interesting.

once again, chester bringing up a magnus-related statement, here in obvious reply to what sam was talking about- just when he was considering to celia about dropping his investigations- clearly (imo) to goad him into not leaving it behind. excellent. and fun given the first TMI-related incident with redcanary had the obvious conclusion of THE MAGNUS INSTITUTE IS WEIRD AND DANGEROUS while also having enough mystery to draw sam in further. sam's seen the canary die in the coalmine and has made the decision to keep digging and that's fantastic.

you know, given the fact that most people are pretty consistently drawing jimmy this season with dog features instead of canary/bird features, (and i mean "instead of," i dont think ive seen a single fucked up dog bird hybrid thing like i had originally expected. and ive seen very few exclusively bird designs) i think it would be fairly fitting if jimmy straight up DIDNT die first this season.

maybe he still dies second or gets farther or whatever IDC. but the fact that the team persona jimmy and martyn have attributed to themselves (big dogs WOOF WOOF) have usurped their fandom designated creature types (canary in a coalmine and the short-lived wet cat respectively)... to the degree that the audience (who are the watchers) themselves consider them as such.
