Summary:
The Culinary Institute of America at Greystone is one of the most prestigious culinary schools in the entire country. Every year thousands of prospective chefs apply with only a handful chosen to attend. There is a long history of friendly fire between the Baking and Pastry students and the Culinary students, each specialty attracting specific personality types that don't always see eye-to-eye. While the bakers thrive off of order and precision, the Hotsiders lean more towards gut feelings and controlled chaos. Never has this been more apparent than between Lukas Patterson and Julianna Molina.
or
a self-indulgent college AU written entirely for my own entertainment
in which Luke and Julie go to a Halloween party and there is absolutely no funny business involved at all (see also: chapter 7 in which we get party texts pt. 1)
look at me crawling out of the depths of my google drafts to finally post chapters I wrote literal months ago😬 the only resolution I have for 2023 is to finish my WIPs for jatp on ao3 so happy day after christmas, pls pray that I can finish this fic in the next 12ish months

CoX: Juke
Time to time, I write up an explication of characters I’ve played in RPGs or made for my own purpose. This is an exercise in character building and creative writing.
…the police are the crime…
Dead drops and drunk tanks. A door left unlocked. A hole in the guard patrol schedule. An undersecured door, a familiar password, a moment of forgetfulness, or believable forgetfulness. In Praetoria, you could get a lot done by leaning on the way that everyone thought everyone else was corrupt.
Juke was one of them. Secret police, that is. You could only go along for so long, though, until it all went wrong. That’s when he found friends, found rebels, but not the resistance. Instead, it was dead drops and secret messages, and now, nobody knows anything he had to do with the revolution.
So that sucks.
If you’ve worked with Juke, something has gone wrong.
Clad in a skin tight stealth suit, Juke is a high-tech cybernetic operative who shows up in missions with clear purposes, and with clear intentions. You might not realise he’s involved in the same thing as you until he shows up, in the middle of an enemy fray, tasing and clubbing people with a containment rod. A stealth infiltrator, he shows up with mysterious devices for pre-emptively disabling a dangerous supervillain device but he needs someone in a cape for legal reasons.
Socially, he does tend to be the obnoxious kind of aloof. Playful and mischievous, the kind to poke people for unnecessary reasons, Juke carries himself with the air of someone who is getting away with something. And he always seems to be up to no good, always showing up around some really shifty Praetorian stuff, like runaway science experiments or traumatised unmedicated people trying to lash out while experiencing great distress.
And yeah, that’s shifty! That’s really shifty! It’s almost like he’s somehow connected to all these terrible things! Which he is, because when he was around on Praetoria, he was essentially, one of the people whose job it was to cause those terrible things. Part of a division of Powers that looks like the CIA’s CIA, he did terrible things, for a long time, convinced that it was all being done in the name of the greater good. And then when he finally broke, when he couldn’t do that any more… Well, he had to pivot, and suddenly he was the ghost of the resistance. He spent his time deploying information or sabotaging things but with the same skills that made him a perfect agent of an unrestrained police state.
Then the world ended, and what was he going to do? Walk off and find some place to eat snacks? Or clean up from the mess Praetoria made? What was the right thing to do…?
Mechanics
Okay, there’s an element of Juke, mechanically, which is going to sound like a complaint. And it is a complaint, a little bit, but it’s a little bit of a whine, really. See, Juke is an Epic Archetype, of the second set, the Villain Epic Archetype (‘VEAT’), which makes him the villain version of a thing like the Warshade or Peacebringer. These archetypes are more specialised and weird than the normal archetypes, and depending on what era of developer opinion you were reading, they’re either isolated because of their play complexity (hm) or their link to a specialised narrative (hm).
The hero archetypes, the Peacebringer and Warshade? They’re uhm. Not good? Not great. They’ve been improved, a lot, on Homecoming, by high level investment stuff, but the actual archetype you get out of them is ‘fine,’ in general. They get to be their own little secondary space, over on the side, and it’s a complicated conversation. For now, consider them on a lower shelf of power, where the best and most powerful thing they can do is probably fine.
But the VEATs, they were designed for a world of invention origin powers, with the incarnate system on the horizon, with developers who knew a lot of what they were doing and with limited ability to do anything truly unheard of to the programming of the game, and they are the most modern archetype in this ten year old game. The two VEATs each can do a cute trick of turning, by power choices, into two subclasses, which have some powers in common, but wildly different playstyles based on the powers you pick. And they’re not balanced against one another.
Look, both widows are really good. The Fortunata is so tough it can stand next to a Rikti Go-Fuck-Yourself Pylon without temporary powers or invention origin enhancements. The Night Widow can do that and put out enough damage to kill the pylon, again, without spending money on the build. Then, under that ridiculous standard you have the Crab Spider, which has huge area coverage, is tough as nails, and can run a big cloud of pets and the huge team-enabling power Venom Grenade. And then, down under those three, you have the Bane Spider. The weakest of the proper VEAT builds.
And uh, so like, hold on here because okay, I’m complaining about how Juke is a weak build.
Juke’s build has:
Juke has 45%+ defense to all positions and 40%+ defense to all types, meaning he is at what we call the defense soft cap.
Juke has 68% resistance to smashing and lethal damage, which is 7% shy of the hard cap for his archetype.
170% global recharge, which is permanent hasten, and permanent Reinforcements (a gang of little spider robots that normally takes eleven full minutes to recharge after it’s used up)
50% global damage buff, 30% of which is a team buff
Soooooooooo uh, don’t uh, don’t take the complaining very seriously. Bane Spiders are the weakest proper VEAT build. They are also completely gonzo.
History
The tradition in the roelplaying space for Praetorians is that every character (more or less) has a Praetorian counterpart. That is that any given character in Praetoria is then reiterated on in the Primal world (or, you know, vice versa, probably), and there are exceptions but the assumed default is that every character is one half of a pair of expressions on the same idea.
I don’t tend to make Praetorians that way – personally, I find the idea a bit of a retread and unless I can see a way to use the idea in some other form, I tend to only make my Praetorians as unique people, products of Praetoria, without a Primal counterpart. Yet, if you knew me, and you knew these characters, you might reasonable think that Juke is Praetorian Swivel.
They’re not. I mean, I can imagine someone with as it were, a fan theory that they are comparable characters, but to me they really feel different. They are both cyborgs, with a militarised background — Swivel, the US Military, Juke the Praetorian Powers Division — and they have the same hair and both wear skin-tight nonsense supertech suits. They both hack things remotely that they’re near physically, and they both are parts of small organisations operating technically, technically outside the purview of any governments. They’re both dangerous softboys, and both are immensely guilty about something — Swivel about his past of violence and Juke about being in the super-fascist super-CIA.
What I think separates Juke from Swivel is how I imagine them both handling being cornered. The whole point of Juke, story-wise, is that he’s very good at wiggling out of things, and knows it, and he’s self-defeatingly guilty, so odds are good you’re going to find him in a situation that’s dangerous for him, dumb to be in, and that he will find some way to get out of it. Swivel, by contrast, will cut his way out of it. The whole point of Swivel is that trying to contain him is a problem – sure, both boys will find a way out, but Swivel’s way out is through.
Juke, on the other hand, Juke is meant to squirm. He’s meant to be in situations where he wants to wiggle out of it, but there really isn’t any wiggling to do. He was a Praetorian Police operative, he did things that he shouldn’t be able to wiggle away from even if he wants to.
I guess that’s the thought that permeates Juke’s story.
When’s the best time to stop supporting a fascist regime? Yesterday. When’s the next best? Right now.
In a lot of superhero stories, there are people with bad backstories, or stories about revolting against something bad, but so often they’re forgiven in ways that I feel are very easy, that don’t relate to the way those things really are. You can’t be forgiven for a murder, because the person you murdered isn’t going to be asking you for forgiveness.
You gotta make good with what you got.

Hi Yunnie ^^ I'm still confused about Kouji's and Amanda's rooms state in the case from 17 years ago, was the tap found running in Amanda's room or Koji's or both?
*war flashbacks*
Ok, here’s my take at translating those cursed pages xD
[Haneda Kouji…]C: 17 years ago… He, who by that time had 4 shogi crowns… C: Went to America to participate in a chess tournament, that was his hobby…C: The night before the tournament, in the room of the hotel he was staying…C: Somebody attacked him and he died…C: The room was in huge disarray…C: It seems that we showed resistance while he was being killed… The reason of death is unknown…C: At the same day, in the different room of the same hotel…C: Died Amanda Hughes, an asset holder* from Amerca, the reason of death also unknown…* 資産家 - wealthy person, but in economic terms it’s an asset holder.
C: Amanda was Haneda’s big fan, and they has some interaction… Since that day, Amanda’s bodyguard that always followed her around, disappeared, so…C: Amanda’s Bodyguard that was called “Asaka”, was made the prime suspect and the search for their whereabouts began… But the whereabouts are still unknown…C: What’s more, this “Asaka”’s identity is shrowded with mystery…C: Neither Amanda’s family, nor her acquaintances know the details of how this person got employed…C: Oi? Do you know anyone called Asaka?H: No idea… I never heard of it, but…H: Since the case of Haneda Kouji’s death is unknown…H: And his name was in the list of people that had to drink APTX 4869…H: There’s a high probability this Asaka person belongs to the Organization…C: But don’t you think it’s strange? Why the name of Haneda Kouji, who died 17 years ago, is 2 names below mine?H: Data manager didn’t compile the list going by the order of death… Maybe this person sorted it by blood type… TN: How the hell would you know Shinichi’s blood typeC: Besides, heh… If the medicine I had to drink already existed 17 years ago… How old are you now?H: How rude. Didn’t I tell you? I’m 18…
H: That’s probably the medicine that my mom and dad created…H: I only had to recreate this medicine by sweeping up together the burnt remains of the documents…C: Burnt remains?H: Mom and dad’s laboratory was destroyed in fire, along with the documents about the medicine and the lives of both of them… I heard from Org’s people that it was an unfortunate accident, but…H: Well, what they really made me do…H: Was another drug…A: But why did they need to kill a Japanese shogi player?H: Maybe he became a nuisance for the Org, by accidentally witnessing the murder of that rich person? Seems like Amanda was well known in FBI and CIA…C: Amanda visited Haneda Kouji’s room once… That seems true….C: Since her fingerprints were found on his doorknob, sofa, teacups, plates, forks and other stuff right?C: They asked for black tea and a cake from a room service… And had an afternoon tea, maybe?C: Looks like these cutlery was broken to pieces when the room was invaded…C: Yep… Seems like the broken pieces of plates and cupt with hotel’s Juke siganture were found throughout the whole room…
C: Hm? There’s glass among the brocken cutlery…C: A mirror?C: It has some letters on it… P T O N?H: Those letters are probably… PUT ON MASCARA…TN: ma su ka ra. Why.H: Right at that time, it was a big hit, one cosmetic company started selling a hand-mirror along with mascara… With the letters “put on mascara” in there…H: My sister had such a mirror that previously belonged to my mom…C: But why hand-mirror was in Haneda Kouji’s room…A: Hmm… The killed rich person was an old lady over 80 years old…H: Maybe Haneda Kouji got it from his mother, or so. Since he is a shogi player, he probably should care about his appearance…H: But the state of the room, that was left in such a disarray, bothers me…
H: For an Org’s work, it shouldn’t be possible…H: Their style of work is to leave like nothing had happened…H: Actually, the room of a killed wealthy person was the same, right?C: Yes, it’s written here that even the facet in the bathroom was left running…A: Anyway, that’s great that you managed to find such information…C: Looks like somebody is periodically uploading it to the internet? Without bothering that it gets deleted…C: As if somebody is asking…C: Please somebody solve this mystery…A: Then how did they know stuff like he was fighting back?C: Looks like Haneda Kouji’s arm has defensive wound from strikes and kicks in various places of his arms…C: His right arm…C: Shows it really clearly, see?
C: The traces…C: That he tightly grasped the small scissors provided by his room…A: He grasped the scissors?C: Hm? What about scissors?A: Ah, well…A: This morning, a murder occured at Okubo-cho…A: And the victim died while grasping the scissors I invented…A: Megure-keibu asked me to come to the crime scene after noon to explain those scissors…H: Ah… Those stupid scissors that make “chokin” sound when you close them…C: You managed to sell those…A: Those scissors got a lot of fame for their superb and pleasing sound![Akai line I’m tired bye Akai]

Começava a chamada Operação Champanha.
“Escrevam bem,” ele exortava.

AMERICAN MADE (2017)

Former UKIP leader Nigel Farage of Brexit fame is a person of interest in the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s attempts to influence the 2016 presidential campaign, The Guardian reports.
“Farage has not been accused of wrongdoing and is not a suspect or a target of the US investigation,” the report notes.
The FBI’s scrutiny of Farage stems from his close connection with President Donald Trump and his associates, along with Julian Assange of Wikileaks. The U.S. intelligence community believes elements of the Russian government provided stolen emails to Wikileaks, who distributed the emails publicly during the 2016 election.
“Assange is a narcissist who has created nothing of value,” CIA Director Mike Pompeo declared in April. “He relies on the dirty work of other to make himself famous. He is a fraud — a coward hiding behind a screen,” adding “WikiLeaks walks like a hostile intelligence service and talks like a hostile intelligence service.”
“If you triangulate Russia, WikiLeaks, Assange and Trump associates the person who comes up with the most hits is Nigel Farage,” an intelligence source told The Guardian. They continued, “he’s right in the middle of these relationships. He turns up over and over again. There’s a lot of attention being paid to him.”
Farage’s spokesman issued a statement Thursday disparaging the guardian report as “hysterical.”

Farage appeared on the campaign trail with Trump during the 2016 campaign and remained a forceful advocate for him throughout. Trump appears to admire Farage so much suggested publicly after his election that the United Kingdom should make him their Ambassador to the U.S. and invited him to meet him during the Presidential transition.
Farage was also publicly invited to dine with Trump at the Trump International Hotel during a visit to Washington in February 2017.
It was a great honour to spend time with @realDonaldTrump. He was relaxed and full of good ideas. I'm confident he will be a good President. http://pic.twitter.com/kx8cGRHYPQ
— Nigel Farage (@Nigel_Farage) November 12, 2016
Farage made a surreptitious March visit to the Ecuadorian embassy in London where Assange is living. Farage claimed not to remember why he was in the building adding “I never discuss where I go or who I see.” He later defended the visit to a German newspaper saying he met Assange for “journalistic reasons” adding that he had “never received a penny from Russia.”

For the wip game: dream, wonder, pain 🥰
Kira!!💖 why am I not at all surprised that pain is one of your words lol
from fight through the dark, and find the spark
dream: "He’d been envious of the space for years, painfully aware of how he was always on the outside looking in at what seemed to be the kind of loving family he could only dream of."
from an unposted WIP
wonder: "He briefly wonders what might have happened to finally make their drummer snap, but then there’s a flash of shimmering blue at the edge of the dance floor and Luke’s attention is fully diverted."
from needs salt
pain: "The words scraped out of her throat like it had been lined with sandpaper, pain etched along the outlines of each one."
send me a word, if it’s in my wip document I’ll answer your ask with the sentence it appears in

Chapters: 5/?
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Julie Molina/Luke Patterson
Never has this been more apparent than between Lukas Patterson and Julianna Molina.
or
a self-indulgent college AU written entirely for my own entertainment
texting interlude two: in which Luke and Julie flirt fight some more
