National Poutine Day
In Canada, particularly in Quebec, poutine is a staple food, if not  also an iconic one. It has become a popular food in America as well as  in other countries, and we celebrate it today, on National Poutine Day.  Standard poutine is made up of fresh-cut french fries, squeaky fresh  cheese curds, and brown gravy, but there are many variations of the  dish. Among other possibilities, the name may have come from the word  "pudding," which is spelled pouding in French, or from poutine,  which is slang for "mess" in Quebec. It is pronounced "pou-tin" in the  French-dominated regions of Quebec and New Brunswick, but as "poo-teen"  elsewhere.
According to the most widely known and accepted story, poutine was  first served at L’Idéal (Café Ideal)—a restaurant that later changed its  name to Le Lutin Qui Rit (The Laughing Elf)—in 1957, in the small town  of Warwick, in Arthabaska County, Quebec, a town known for producing  squeaky cheese curds. A usual customer, Eddy Lainsesse, requested curds  on top of his fries. The restaurant owner, Fernand Lachance, supposedly  replied, "Ça va faire une maudite poutine," which roughly translates to  "That's going to make a dreadful mess." A variation of the story says  that Lainsesse asked for the curds and fries to be thrown together in a  paper bag, upon which Lachance looked into the bag and said, "This is  poutine." The dish started being sold in a bag and soon caught on.  Patrons began adding ketchup and vinegar to it. In 1963, Lachance began  serving it on plates. Customers soon noticed that the fries got cold  quickly, so Lachance added gravy to keep them warm.
According to another story, poutine was created by Jean-Paul Roy,  owner of Le Roy Jucep, a drive-in restaurant in Drummondville, Quebec.  He had been serving a dish of gravy and french fries called patate-sauce  since 1958, and in 1964 noticed that some of his diners were adding  cheese curds to it. He soon added a dish that contained all three  ingredients and named it fromage-patate-sauce.
No matter how poutine got its start, it soon could be found being  sold as street food in Canada. By 1969 it was being sold in Quebec City  at the Ashton Snack Bar food truck on Boulevard Wilfred-Hamel, and it  was being sold in Montreal by 1983. By the early 1980s, it had become a  widely popular street food in Ontario and Quebec.
It made its debut in Canadian chain restaurants in 1985, appearing on  the menu at Frits, a now-defunct Quebec-based chain. By the 1990s,  poutine had reached mass popularization in the country, after its  inclusion on the menus of other chains. It first appeared on a Burger  King menu in 1987 in Quebec, and soon spread to other locations of the  chain. The same happened with McDonald's in 1990. Canadian fast-food  chain Harvey's debuted it on menus across the country in 1992.
But poutine wasn't to remain only as street food and fast food. By  the early 2000s, it was appearing in high-end Canadian restaurants. It  was put on the menu at Aud Pied de Cochon in Montreal in 2002, where it  was topped with foie gras. Other high-end Montreal restaurants followed  suit. Garde Manger began serving an Iron Chef America-winning lobster poutine, and Pub Quartier Latin put poutine made with steak, truffles, and red wine demi-glace on their menu.
Some Canadian restaurants have made poutine their main focus. La  Banquise in Montreal began serving it in the 1980s. They started with  the standard version and an Italian version with bolognese sauce instead  of gravy. They have since expanded to serving 30 types. Smoke's  Poutinerie was started in Toronto in 2008, the first poutine-only  restaurant in that city. Other poutine-only restaurants that followed in  Canada are Poutini's House of Poutine, La Poutinerie, and Poutineville.
Poutine made its first foray into the United States in New Jersey and  New York, where a variation of the recipe called "Disco Fries" became  popular. This version substituted mozzarella or cheddar cheese for the  curds. Poutine has since become relatively common in the States, and  took hold in other countries as well, such as the United Kingdom and  Russia.
As mentioned, there are various types of poutine besides the usual  french fries, cheese curds, and gravy combination. Different types of  potatoes, cheese, and sauces can be used. Italian poutine may use  spaghetti sauce instead of gravy; veggie poutine is made with mushroom  sauce and vegetables; Irish poutine is made with lardons. La galvaude is from Gaspésie and is made with chicken and green peas. A variation in Montreal uses smoked meat.
Festivals devoted to poutine are held across Canada throughout the  year. Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto are some cities that hold them. On  National Poutine Day, events are held and specials are available at  restaurants in countries like Canada and the United States. For example,  My Meatball Place in Toronto has given away free samples of meatball  and vegan poutine, and The Hops Spot in Syracuse has offered half-price  poutine. With so many types of poutine—and so many restaurants that  serve it in some parts of the world—there is no reason to remain hungry  on National Poutine Day.
How to Observe National Poutine Day (Canada)
Here are some ideas on how to celebrate the day:
Make your own poutine. You could make the original version or another variation of the dish. You could even make Disco Fries, the Americanized version of the dish.
Check if there is a place near you that serves poutine.
Enjoy poutine at a Canadian restaurant that specializes in the dish, such as La Banquise, Smoke's Poutinerie, Poutini's House of Poutine, La Poutinerie, or Poutineville. Smoke's Poutinerie also has some locations in the United States.
Have poutine at a restaurant in Warwick, Quebec, the town where the dish is said to have originated, or have it at Le Roy Jucep in Drummondville, Quebec, the other location where it is said to have gotten its start.
Eat some poutine at Harvey's or at another fast food restaurant in Canada.
Enjoy poutine at a high-end Canadian restaurant such as Aud Pied de Cochon, Garde Manger, or Pub Quartier Latin.
See if there are any specials on poutine today at restaurants such as My Meatball Place in Toronto or The Hops Spot in Syracuse.
Plan a trip to an upcoming poutine fest, such as Montreal's Le Grand Poutinefest, Ottawa Poutine Fest, or Toronto Poutine Fest.

Food! Headcanon Smoke (Tomas Vrbada)
Just some food headcanons that have been "stewing" in my head for our Friendly Neighborhood Wholesoome Sidekick!
Rated: PG-13, mentions of alcohol and "Sex on a Beach" drink
Words: 932
-As an Earth Realm Protector, Tomas had been billeted by different hosts from all over our world during various missions that take place in different parts of the world.
-Tomas is always appreciative of homecooked meals prepared by his billet hosts because he understands that it takes valuable resources, time and effort, especially if it is evident that the billet family is poor. There’s nothing more delicious than a homecooked meal made with love.
-He eats a lot of vegetables and loves them! Tomas appreciates vegetables prepared in different ways: salads, roasted vegetables, pureed as a soup, battered and fried, as snacks, you name it. Authentic Mexican tortillas and nachos with a lot of salsa with juicy chunks of tomatoes, bring on the vitamin C!
-Tomas also eats a lot of fruits, his favourite ones being apples, oranges, grapes, stone fruits, pineapple, mangoes, and any fruits that are both sweet and tart, especially if crunchy. He doesn’t mind bananas, melons, berries and local fruits from different countries and will eat them when offered.
-Tomas doesn’t mind smoothies, but doesn’t normally consume this, since they weren’t available during his time in the Lin Kuei, and currently in the Shirai Ryu.
-Tomas’ favorite thing to eat is stew. It reminds him of his childhood days as a hunter, as his mother often cooked stews for him and his sister. Got a pot roast in the slow cooker, he’s game! Make sure that there are a ton of veggies in that Crockpot, and he’ll appreciate that. Happen to have a large Dutch oven of Osso Bucco in the oven, he’s inwardly drooling and counting the minutes until he can get his mitts on a bowlful of that tender beef shank on top of creamy polenta and topped with gremolata! Got some chicken or pork adobo and rice, he’ll take seconds! Got a big bowl of Caldo de Res (yes, I know it’s a soup), it’s gone in no time. In a mood for some comfort food, he’ll gladly accept a bowl of scouse made with lamb. Got butter chicken on coconut rice, yes, please! :D
-If a billet host can or is well off, Tomas loves being treated to different restaurants. If a billet host has recommendations and is enthusiastic to take him to a popular spot, Tomas is always happy and appreciative to go with. From a popular hole-in-a-wall noodle shop to a lively gastropub on a game night to a Michelin Star restaurant in an upscale part of downtown, he loves being exposed to different culinary experiences. Tomas always has a great time bonding with his billet families this way, and they always enjoy hearing about his stories and adventures.
-Tomas won’t eat anything that isn’t well-cooked or under cooked, not out of rudeness but for his own safety. If there is anything that is pungent in a bad way, he’ll try it once in small quantities, but that’s it. If an animal that is being butchered is illegally acquired and slaughtered in an inhumane way, Tomas wants nothing to do with it.
-It only takes only a few occurrences for Tomas to learn to have a sack of snacks or MRE’s, courtesy of Johnny Cage’s connection with the US army.
-Just because Tomas must keep a certain physique doesn’t mean that he can’t enjoy any foods and beverages that are “less” healthy. Having been to different parts of the world has made him acquainted to the popular fun foods. If he’s in Canada, he must have some poutine with those squeaky cheese curds! If he’s in the Southern US, bring on the fried chicken with biscuits and gravy! If he’s in a Southeast Asian country, the street food offers a ton of options: try the fish balls on sticks, various fresh seafood cooked fresh, and shaved ice desserts, to name a few! If he’s in the Middle East or in the Balkan region, Baklava is a must!
-Tomas can generally hold his liquor and knows his limits. His alcoholic beverage of choice is beer, specifically the beloved pilsner. It must be the Czech in him or the fact that men can generally metabolize alcohol faster, or both, that he’s able to put away a lot of beer. In fact, Tomas is one of the few that can out drink most of the Earth Realm protectors.
-If Tomas is offered wine or Prosecco with some dinners, he will accept 2-3 glasses. He rarely drinks hard liquor, but if with a culture where it is customary and polite to accept a drink from a billet host, he will. He’s had quite a few tequila shots in his life.
-At one point, Tomas had been curious about Jello Shots at one point. Tomas enjoys them if he’s with younger members of billet families that offer them, especially when he can enjoy the more adventurous drinks like Sex on a Beach, Long Island, AMF (Ooof!), Ceasar, and other creative concoctions with no names. Tomas has also taken a liking to Baileys, by itself or in hot chocolate.
-Tomas has a sweet tooth. Ice cream, gelato, and popsicles are consumed in large quantities. He likes mini fruit tarts and cakes in general, especially Japanese sponge cakes with strawberries and light whipped icing. Anything matcha will always be welcomed, be it as tea, in cakes, ice creams, and anything creatively sweet.
-Tomas loves chocolate bars and protein bars. He also loves cookies and Nutella on fresh bannock. Have options of snacks in a basket, and that completes his billeting experience with you :D

Kiss the Girl
(Dieter x horror loving female)
Words: 1, 145
Summary: you and Dieter go on your first official date
Warnings: lots of delicious food gets mentioned so don’t read when hungry
Masterlist here
You looked in the mirror for the third time today. You looked at the simple yellow dress with secret pant petticoat underneath to help prevent thigh rubbing, jacket and sneakers. Normally, you’d opt for comfortable jeans, but today you wanted to feel cute.
You and Dieter were going to a food truck festival, going out together for the first time. It was a change from just hanging out on your couch watching movies.
Was it a date? You weren’t sure, the furthest you two had gotten together in a romantic sense was snuggling up together and you gave him that kiss on the cheek.
You checked your bag for the fifth time and checked your phone for probably the millionth time today. Time to head out to avoid being late.
*****
Dieter looked at himself in the mirror. This was going to be Dieter’s first proper date in…he can’t remember the last time he ever went on a date, so the first time in forever.
He thinks it’s a date; you and he had a friendship which he didn’t want to end. That one time you kissed him on the cheek was wonderful; he never wanted to wash his cheek.
He ran his fingers through his hair, trying to keep in under control, make it look less like he’d been electrified. It didn’t really matter though as you’ve seen him at his scruffiest, and you were too nice to mock his appearance.
His phone pinged, reminding him that he should not be running late.
*****
You were ten minutes early which was normal for you.
Deciding to scope out the food trucks first, you walked around sipping a lemonade. It was early enough that the crowds weren’t packed, only small queues forming. You checked all the menus days ago online but enjoyed seeing them written out front of the trucks.
Reconnaissance completed, you made your way back to the entrance, lemonade half empty.
*****
Dieter hoped he wasn’t running late. His driver usually got him to places on time. That, or he never knew or cared what time he showed up.
The traffic was making him nervous. He was nervous about being late. He really didn’t want to disappoint you by being late for this date. He hoped it was a date. He was certainly nervous enough for it to feel like one.
He kept fidgeting and looking at his phone, watching the seconds slowly tick forward.
*****
You’d almost finished your lemonade. You weren’t too early, were you?
This was the worst part of dating, the waiting. Not that you dated anyone since…you checked your phone again. No, you were there on time, but you continued to fidget with the straw in your hand. There was nothing left in the cup, so you started nervously chewing on it.
You then smoothed down your dress to give yourself something else to do.
Just as the panic was started to sneak in, you heard your name being called.
*****
“Hey” Dieter came running up, having literally jumped out into the traffic to get here. “I’m not late am?”
“No, no…a few minutes, but that’s okay.”
Gosh, you looked pretty. Well, you were effortlessly beautiful, but today…why did you have to be so pretty? You smiled up at him with that smile which made Dieter melt into a pile of butterflies.
“Should we…?” you gestured towards the food trucks and he gladly followed.
“I don’t know what sort of food you like, but I researched all the menus and found a few things I like.”
“You researched the menus?”
“I like to know what I’m getting into.”
Gosh, you were beautifully efficient. “I’m not fussed, happy to go with whatever you think sounds nice.”
“Do you mind sharing? Then we can get through more food than on our own.”
He shook his head, “Sounds good to me.”
*****
You started light with some cauliflower tacos and Korean Fried Chicken bao buns.
Those were followed with the much heartier butter chicken poutine and so many dumplings with so many delicious fillings.
All were consumed between sips of hibiscus lemonade.
Finally, you ended on a sweet note with your own bubble waffle sundaes, swapping halfway.
*****
“Wow, that was fucking good food.”
“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”
Dieter did enjoy himself; it was probably the best time he’s ever had sober. Food just tasted so good when you could actually taste things. All his senses felt renewed.
But the butterflies kept coming back. Every time you passed him food or shared a straw with him, he’d feel the electricity of accidental touches. He’d look at your lips and want to place his own there. But then he worried that if it wasn’t the most amazing earth-shattering kiss, then you’d be disappointed and leave him amongst the discarded litter. So, no pressure. Even the thought of asking you made his stomach threaten to return all the delicious food he just ate. He swore he could hear Sebastian taunting him with that song:
Sha la la la la la la. My of my, look like the boy too shy, ain’t gonna kiss the girl.
He wanted to punch that crab in his stupid awesome face.
“So, you had a good time?” your question took him out of his reverie.
“Yeah, best date…day, I’ve had.”
“Same here.”
He swallowed down his fear, “It’d be nice if we did it again, maybe other places with food. Or not food, but food is always nice and…”
His rambling was cut short when you placed a quick peck on the corner of his mouth. The short lip contact sent Dieter into some kind of shock and that seemed to have left you terrified.
“Oh no, I’m so sorry. I wasn’t sure if you wanted that. You were staring at my mouth all day and I really should have asked first; you probably didn’t want that at all…”
He snapped out of his just-been-kissed shock, “No, no, I did want that. It’s just the thought of it made feel sick. Not the kissing part, never. No, the thought of you saying no, because I’d ask you first, it’s only polite to ask because I’m a man and…”
“Dieter” you interrupted, “Do you want to ask me?”
“Yes”
“I won’t say no”
“Can I kiss you?”
You simply nodded.
So Dieter gently cupped your cheek with his hand and pressed his lips to yours.
It was earth-shattering and amazing, and he didn’t want it to end but he had to at some point.
*****
Eventually Dieter pulled his lips away from yours, even though you didn’t want him to. It was the most amazing earth-shattering kiss you’d ever had.
“Wow..that wasI don’t want to say nice, that’s not the right word.”
“Can’t think of one?”
“Not right now.”
“Would it help if I kissed you again?”
“Yes”

National Cheese Curd Day
National Cheese Curd Day was created by Culver's, a fast-food restaurant that started in Wisconsin that is located mainly in the Midwest, that as of 2020 has restaurants in 25 states. One of their most popular menu items, their cheese curds, are made with white and yellow Cheddar cheese. The fresh cheese curds—which they source from LaGrander's Hillside Dairy in Stanley, Wisconsin—are breaded with their signature blend of herbs and spices and then deep-fried. Culver's sold over 17.7 million orders of cheese curds in 2015, and over 28 million orders in 2018. During the month of October, when they hold National Cheese Curd Day, they offer chances for people to win cheese curds and other prizes. They've even given away a year's supply of cheese curds as their grand prize.
Cheese curds are popular in the Midwest, particularly in Wisconsin. They also are common in Quebec, Canada. Cheese curds are fresh, made by separating the curd from whey during the cheese-making process. Instead of going through the whole process, where a block of cheese is made, a solid curd of cheese with a milky flavor is formed. Cheese curds are mainly made of young Cheddar, either white or yellow, although some are made from mozzarella, Muenster, Colby, or Monterey Jack cheese. Fresh cheese curds are moist and rubberlike and will squeak when eaten when their elastic protein strands rub against tooth enamel. They begin losing their squeakiness after 12 hours and are no longer considered fresh about two days after being made. They are rather mild in flavor with a bit of saltiness and are often flavored with dill, garlic, spicy Cajun, taco seasoning, ranch, or jalapeno.
Cheese curds are commonly eaten as a snack or appetizer. Not only can they be eaten fresh, but they can be deep-fried, after being covered with a breading or batter—sometimes a beer batter. They are often then dipped in marinara sauce, ketchup, or ranch dressing. Deep-fried cheese curds are popular at state fairs, carnivals, and bars. They are also common at some fast-food restaurants, Culvers and A&W being two that offer them. Cheese curds are also used to make poutine. No matter if you eat deep-fried cheese curds at Culver's today, or enjoy them somewhere else or made in another manner, you are sure to find National Cheese Curd Day most enjoyable!
How to Observe National Cheese Curd Day
Some ways to observe National Cheese Curd Day include:
Pick up some cheese curds at Culver's. Watch their social media accounts for chances to win cheese curds and other swag.
Have some cheese curds at another restaurant, at a bar, or at a carnival or fair.
Pick up some fresh cheese curds at a store or shop, or make your own.
Make your own deep-fried cheese curds.
Plan a trip to the next Cheese Curd Festival.

Some asks to pass the time:
Favourite local dish?
Favourite foreign dish?
What kinda vidya are you playing at the moment, if any?
Any shows you're into currently?
Favourite weather? - (mine's a clear and sunny winter's morning)
Sheeit, how local are we talking? Because I could go with plain Swedish pork stuffed potato dumplings - kroppkakor,
Tumblr media
or the now infamous fermented herring - surströmming. That one is more an acquired taste, and not something I would not every day. But brined pork stuffed, seasoned with allspice, potato dumplings - served with butter? Gimme that.
Now, foreign dish - I gotta say I have a weak spot for some of the street food in Canada. A local "Ontario variant" of the poutine is the Chicken Shawarma Poutine.
Tumblr media
I do miss that.
And as for what games I am playing, at the moment I am in an odd moment where I actually got back into War Thunder - and I either play that Swedish grind of planes and tanks, or or I play the occasional Civ 5 or Civ 3 game.
Not so much for watching shows at the moment. I have the last few years been very bad at following the latest thing, but I have been idly contemplating rewatching Deep Space 9 - after I rewatching Babylon 5 a few months ago for the first time since I saw the show in the 90's.
And weather... I am split between a 18-25 degree summer, and the midwinter snow storm. Something cozy about that.

Burger Kings in Canada now have Butter Chicken chicken sandwiches as well as Butter Chicken Poutine.
Do you agree with me that it sounds nasty
Or do you think I should try it?
Never tried, I always order the same thing being Two Large Fries and Chicken Fries.
I’ve heard some people say the poutine and chicken sandwich aren’t that good, though that may depend on your opinion if you’re willing to try it.

cake. cheesecake, black forest, devilfood cake, or even just vanilla. cake with cream cheese icing or the most frothy icing or just a looooot of icing and maybe chocolate chips in either the icing or the cake batter or both. the buttery-est popcorn to the point it leaves a film on your fingertips - it's either gonna get you fat or harden your arteries. potato chips. bread is allegedly fattening, so bread with whatever the fuck tickles your fancy onnit, or even just sleeves of whatever crackers sound the best - saltines, cheese, rice, seaweed, whateverrr, crackers are just little hard breads. i recommend trying different kinds of breads too - pumpernickel is good imo and pairs well with sweet toppings and meats, hardbread is good for gnawing on if you just eat it out of the package and a wonderful thing if you have an oral fixation lmao. pasta is always good for carbs, especially with chicken and alfredo sauce, and i've been warned about rice before for "being starchy, it's going to make you fat" but it fully depends on what you put in it, if you don't add anything fatty... you aren't going to get much bigger. loaded baked potatoes. mashed potatoes dripping with butter, like, i only started really losing weight when i stopped buying potatoes and fries, and i didn't even load them up with butter or grease, so there's gotta be something there. if nothing else a nice warm potato with some butter or taters seasoned with whatever or even scalloped potatoes dripping with buttery milk and onions 🥺 or even a donaire plate (fries, ground beef, tomato, cheese, and donaire sauce (milk, sugar, vinegar to taste)) or a shepherd's pie (ground beef, vegetables under a later of mashed potato covered with cream of mushroom soup or cheese or whatever sounds good and is in reach - tomato soup would probably be niiiice) or the canadian specialty, poutine (fries, gravy, and a loooot of cheese) or hell the old timey classic of meatballs and gravy and french fries
it also helps to get high if you can get some weed. i've been nauseas and blughy but high at the same time and the munchies persisted for better or worse
sorry for the wall of text lmao
Cake- enjoy but hurts a lot
Popcorn- thank you this one is perfect
Potato chips- on it boss
Bread- have been eating it, will probably try to get my friend to bring me a loaf next time they come bc am poor
Pasta- painful to eat, especially in the amounts that I assume would help me gain weight
Potatoes- fucking love em. Been eating them and hopefully can eat enough to not weigh as much as a middle schooler 😭. Baked potatoes with butter and cheese are good as fuck.
Other stuff- food items with stuff I can't or won't eat in the ingredients but may try modified versions
Weed- have a lot more than I need and haven't lit up in a good while, hoping to start smoking regularly both for food reasons and to minimize the dreams I remember because they're getting bad again. Not sure if I can afford to maintain a daily habit so maybe like every 3 or 4 days, sometimes every 2.
