With the launch of @renegadepublishing’s code of conduct and formalized membership this week (as well as the shiny new DreamWidth hub!), I wanted to get some of my thoughts out there.
This has all been a project for some time now, and I don’t think anyone knew what it was going to turn into.
Renegade started with one man, @armoredsuperheavy, and grew into a movement that’s now 1,200+ and counting. He is the reason fanbinding came into the mainstream fandom consciousness the way it has, and I don’t see it going away anytime soon - it’s spreading faster than Tumblr’s weird ass chat function. Hundreds upon hundreds of books were made because of you, Ash; that’s a damn good legacy, imo.
But I digress - Renegade grew from one man to a handful of people in a little Discord server. The server grew. They started a Tumblr, and this is how it went for some time. When I joined, this is how it was - we were so excited to hit 500 members! But, surprisingly, for someone as terminally on Tumblr as I am - I actually discovered fanbinding through Instagram, then TikTok. I had to actively seek out fanbinding on Tumblr, because I knew it had to exist here if it was already on these mainstream platforms.
Nowadays, fanbinding is becoming increasingly controversial in some circles because of the commodification and commercialization that have taken root; the mantra I keep seeing is “Keep Fandom Free”. This seemed a self-evident truth to me; and I couldn’t understand why it felt like no one knew about Renegade, a league of fanbinders who believe in this very ideal.
In essence, it’s a two-pronged issue: fanbinding is rising in popularity (and controversy), but the advocates-for-free-resources community isn’t terribly visible. Renegade was tucked away on Tumblr, a hidden gem in a locked Discord. I felt like I had discovered buried treasure the day Ash sent me the link to join. So, an idea was birthed - to take Renegade to other platforms, to spread our message and introduce our gift economy ways - to shout from the rooftops about the free, incredible 88-page bible ASH wrote detailing every goddamned step on how to take a fic from AO3 and turn it into a physical book.
Once we got in the room to discuss what this would look like, we discovered we have lots of ideas. We have a community, and we’re all excited to build in it. To share and grow. To make it easier on the people who come after us, with guides and templates. We started thinking about events we could host; the Exchange and Binderary were birthed naturally in the Discord, and have grown in scope to include physical books mailed around the world, and free workshops coordinated and hosted for multiple timezones during the month of February. Fan Fiction Writer Appreciation Day, Banned Books Week, International Fanworks Day - the list goes on and on. More events that haven’t even been announced yet. More projects, ever churning to better our community.
The DreamWidth quickly became a hub to aggregate and host resources better than Tumblr could, to promote discussion and community in a gentler way than Discord was able to. But the controversy kept spinning across other swathes of fanbinding, and the question was raised - what do we believe in?
We are all so different and yet, so unified. We have members on 6 continents, who speak different languages, who belong to hundreds of different fandoms. But what, at it’s core, does it mean to be a part Renegade?
And so, the code of conduct was born.
A code of conduct is a set of standards, moral and ethical, that someone is expected to adhere to in order to interact with an organization. It’s not law - we’re not trying to police anyone, or tell them what to do. We’re telling people what we do - what we believe. There’s no punishment for disagreeing, nor should there be. The code is a mutable document written by members - and so it can be changed by members, and should be changed, as we grow and encounter new challenges. The safest hands are our own, right?
There will be push and pull on this document, but I think that’s a good thing. At the end of all of this, I’m excited for us to acknowledge our community values. I wear my Renegade Publishing badge with pride, because I’ve never seen another group of artists so supportive of each other, and generous with their knowledge. Ash has expounded upon this many a time, but Renegade has the feeling of old-school fandom that I’ve been missing. I haven’t felt this united with fandom since Mishapocalypse.
All jokes aside, I’m so glad I found Renegade. It’s brought so much to my life. Just last weekend, I met up with some local binders, and we had a little Renegade outing. Fandom friends, IRL, geeking out with each other over some books. Does it get any better than that?
Join the movement. Check out our resources! We’re excited to have you here.

do you have any advice for a new writer trying to post on ao3 I want my stories to be noticed (also thanks for not leaving -- so many writers are gone now)
*Looks at my recent hits counts* I'm not sure I'm the best reference for this 😅
I think there are two aspects to getting engagement on fan works:
1: There is the actual work you put into posting your fics. This includes tags, cross posting, and self promotion.
Tags: Make sure you are tagging what is relevant to your fic. AO3 doesn't run on an algorithm, so the way people find your fics is primarily through searches. There is an excellent post on tumblr somewhere that discusses how to accurately tag your work, and I highly suggest starting there! (Post here) Also when tagging, I would suggest considering what YOU would search if you were looking for a fic like this. Quite often, I've found that the tag I was looking for isn't on AO3 yet. Don't be afraid to type in the specific trope or AU you are writing. Look at other tags to get a feel for the structure of the tag, but other than that, have fun.
Also, it may seem counterintuitive, but don't over-tag, by which I mean tagging a bunch of tropes or characters or ships that aren't in your story. It's a fast way to have people disregard your fic instantly, or even mute your name on AO3. Especially in smaller fandoms, I totally get the desire to tag a bigger ship, but it just makes more trouble for you in the long run.
Similarly, on tumblr, keep tags tight. I tend to only tag ship, character (name and superhero name), show/ movie, franchise, and the challenge I'm answering if I am. I know other people tag the actors of the characters. I don't because I know when I go into an actor's tag, I don't want to see fic (of their characters or them either) but that's entirely up to you. But don't tag characters or shows etc that have nothing to do with your fic. This is just courtesy in fandom spaces.
Cross-posting: I admit, I can be kind of bad about cross-posting, but I do find that it helps drive engagement when I do buckle down and get it done. Cross-posting is publishing or promoting a fic on multiple platforms. For instance, I use AO3 AND tumblr. On tumblr fic posts,I link to the AO3 (if there is one, I'm pretty bad about publishing shorter things on here only) And when I publish the fic on AO3, I'm supposed to be linking back to my tumblr. This helps more people see your fic and it grows your community when people are able to follow you on various platforms and spread your fic and kudos around. If you have fan accounts elsewhere and you're comfortable with it, feel free to promote there as well. Also check any discord or group servers you may be on for rules about promoting or channels meant exactly for that.
Self-promoting: this is pretty similar to the above. Because AO3 doesn't have an algorithm, it's kind of up to you to keep interest alive in your fics, especially if you want eyes on it for the first several days afterwards. I know it feels embarrassing to reblog your own fic posts all the time, but it's impossible to tell who may have seen or not seen that you posted a new fic. I don't have any set times for this, personally. I try to catch what I consider active times on tumblr, but that's entirely subjective. It's just trial and error, really. Secondly, don't be embarrassed to recommend your own fics (I'm kind of bad at this) If someone is looking for recs on a specific trope or AU and you know you have just the fic, tell them! Unfortunately, you have to be your own biggest cheerleader when it comes to your own art because no one knows and loves it as much as you do. It feels awkward and I know I get embarrassed if people aren't reccing my fics on their own, but you really are your biggest advocate. Fandom is kind of a popularity contest sometimes 🤷‍♀️ Hype your own self up
2: Now that the technical stuff is done, let's move on to the community aspect of fic posting. (This is not really what you asked for, but i think it's more important sometimes than the actual tags and AO3 procedures) Curating a community and making friends is HUGE as far as readership goes. Especially in smaller fandoms (I assume this is about Sambucky fics/fandom) community is everything. Being a name people recognize and trust is important to regular readership.
Building community: don't be afraid to interact with other writers on this platform or others! The Sambucky fandom has this delightful habit of playfully creating headcanons and ficlets based off of text posts. The Daily Sambucky Fluff Diary project is so much fun and so interactive. I have honestly never been in such a fun, supportive group as the sambucky writers on tumblr. I highly suggest playing in this sandbox and getting familiar with other writers. We hype each other up all the time.
Understanding the rules of play: this is kind of an addendum, but the sambucky fandom is rightfully protective over Sam and his portrayal in fics, as well as Bucky. Reading fics, community interaction posts, and even the rules laid out in various challenges (like the bingos that are hosted at various times) will really help you get a sense of how to respectfully tell stories with Sam and Bucky without being racist, ableist, or disregarding to these characters. Quite often Sam (and Bucky, and especially Sambucky) is only there to prop up other characters. This is something the fandom will (again, rightfully) push back on and avoid. I highly suggest looking at the rules that are laid out in the Sambucky Library's bingo rounds to get an idea of the sandbox rules.
Engagement: the sambucky fandom is small, so we don't really have big organized events like Bangs or Reverse Bangs. However, we do have lots of fun, smaller challenges, namely the bingos! There is also Samtember, the Anniversary Challenge (I don't think that's what we called it) and various prompt week challenges, including an AU week (and we like birthdays here). I highly suggest following @ sambuckylibrary to keep apprised of challenges and prompts. Filling out these prompts when you can and want is a great way to break into the fandom and get engagement with your fics. They are all very low stakes and the reward is new fics, friends, and interaction!
I would also suggest joining a discord server, if that is something you're interested in. (I personally am not in any, but that's because I don't like making new accounts on things, not because I don't want to be part of the fun) This is a great place to interact with other fans, promote your fics, get new recs, and generally reap the fun of fandom in a more condensed space, rather than the entirety of AO3 or tumblr.
One last thing to keep in mind: you've already pointed out that fan fic/art/engagement is decreased in our fandom. This will be reflected in your hits/kudos/comments, especially if you're coming from a bigger fandom. Don't let this discourage you. In fact, I really suggest not looking at stats as much as possible. The wealth of engagement in this fandom will be seen in your relationships and interactions with other fans, not in skyrocketing numbers. Allegedly, Cap4 and Thunderbolts come out in 2025 and our guys look to have an episode in the next season of What-If, but without new content, interest will lag and numerical engagement with it. Just keep this in mind as you begin/ continue your journey into the fandom.
That's a lot of words to say: tag properly, make friends, and have fun ❤️🤍💙❤️🩶🖤🪽🐺

The following ficlet was written by @i-am-still-bb based on this photoset.
Fili/Kili, Teen
You might also be able to read this story on AO3.
If you’ve enjoyed this story, please leave a comment either in replies or on AO3. :)
Planning
“Do you need help with that?”
“What?” Kili startled. He had been lost in his mental list of things that he needed to get done for the holidays. At the top of his list was “make a list.”
“Those,” Fili Durin pointed to the boxes filling Kili’s hands.
“No. Thanks. I’ve got it,” Kili replied, shouldering the door open.
“You don’t look like you’ve ‘got it,’” Fili said skeptically as the boxes teetered precariously.
“I’m fine,” Kili said more brusquely than intended. He did not want to be friends with Fili Duirn. He was the person that the town had brought in to design a new downtown. And that pretty much always meant more roads and more parking which meant more money was needed to maintain the roads and then there was  less money for the library and functional landscaping that Kili advocated for. And as one of the town’s part-time librarians he felt that it was his job to give this errant urban planner the shoulder, no matter how good he looked in a flannel shirt and Chelsea boots.
“I really can get the door for you.”
Kili did not respond and managed to open the door into the post office without dropping any of the packages that he had carefully packed and labeled just that morning in between customers in his stop of odds and ends. He tried to keep the website current, and, even though that was not his favorite task, a significant portion of his business came through the internet.
“Christmas presents?”
Kili’s eyes rolled so far back in his head that he could feel his head tip back. “No,” he replied without turning around.
“What’s in the packages then?”
“Orders.”
“What kind of orders?”
Kili turned around. “Orders that get mailed. I’m assuming that you have something that needs to be mailed and that’s why you followed me in here.”
“I was here before you, so, technically, you followed me.”
Kili snorted.
“And yes, I am mailing something—Christmas cards,” Fili pulled a thick stack of luxurious white envelopes from his field jacket’s pocket as proof.
“I would have pegged you as the ‘e-mailed greeting card’ or ‘post on social media’ person.”
Fili grimaced in disgust, scrunching his nose. “Absolutely not.”
“That would be more efficient.”
“In some ways.”
“And urban planners are all about efficiency,” Kili grumbled. He turned away from Fili to face the back of the person ahead of him in line, hoping that this meant the conversation was at an end. He wanted to ask what sort of cards Fili was mailing. Those envelopes suggested something more expensive than the box of 20 cards that you could buy in any drug store. Books and paper were Kili’s forte. He once spent an afternoon arguing with someone (online!) about the pros and cons of Tomoe River Paper versus MIO paper.
And then it was his turn. Kili set all the packages down and made small talk with the postal employee about the weather and the upcoming holiday parade and the town’s annual Sip and Shop.
“Sip and Shop?” Fili was leaning on the counter at the window next to his.
Kili really did try not to notice how Fili’s eyes almost sparkled (how gross was that? And, more importantly, how was it even possible?) when he asked the question. “Haven’t you seen the fliers? They’re everywhere.”
Fili turned to face Kili more fully, one elbow still propped on the counter. “Maybe. But I don’t think I get it.”
“It’s to promote shopping local over the holidays,” Janice, one of the postal workers said.
“There’s an ordinance in place that lets the restaurants downtown serve wine and beer alongside appetizers while people shop and enjoy the Christmas displays and lights.”
“That’s a good idea. And it sounds fun.”
“It is a great time,” Janice said. And then she gave him his total for his postage. “Have a good rest of your Friday,” she said with a smile.
And Fili was still hot on Kili’s heels when they were leaving the squat brick building that housed the post office. “Are you going to be joining in the sipping and shopping?”
“I probably have to work.” Kili waved goodbye and climbed on his bike before Fili could say anything more.
Kili did not see it, but Fili watched him pedal away,
The downtown was glowing with Christmas lights. Most of the stores had put up lights at the very least, some had displays, and others had their employees dressed up like elves. He smiled and took a sip of his hot chocolate.
This time of year was Kili’s favorite. He had many fond memories of reading books with his parents and helping with the Christmas shopping and preparations.
“Hard at work I see.”
Kili could not even summon the annoyance that he tried to hold close to his chest whenever Fili was around. He shrugged. “This is work,” Kili gestured to the streets. “Supporting my town.”
“Hmm.” Fili nodded. His bare hands were wrapped around a paper cup.
“What drink did you pick?” Kili asked.
“Oh,” Fili lifted the cup to peer at the marker label, “the Krampus, I think it was?”
“That’s a good one.”
“You?”
“Hot chocolate. I would have gotten their peppermint mocha, but if I have caffeine after dinner I’ll be up all night.”
“Ah. I don’t have that problem, but I’ve always been a night owl.”
Kili nodded and they stood next to one another in silence. But it wasn’t a tense or uncomfortable silence, like Kili would have expected. It was companionable. Comfortable even.
“It’s nice that they closed the street for this,” Fili said.
Kili tensed, “Something that probably won’t happen once you’re done.”
“What?’ Fili’s expression was bewildered.
“You’re here to redesign the downtown.”
“Yeah…” Fili said slowly. “And what do you think that entails?”
Kili huffed, blowing his bangs off his forehead. “What it always does—wider streets, more parking, and so on.”
“Have you seen any of my work?”
“No.”
“That’s not what I do at all,” Fili said. “See those painted areas by the corner?”
“Yeah,” Kili grumped. He was both pleased and displeased to maybe be proven wrong.
“Those are to allow for something called ‘daylighting’ which means that the cars can see cars in the intersecting road, but also that they can see pedestrians and pedestrians can see the cars without stepping into the way of traffic.”
“That sounds fine.”
“It is. But paint doesn’t stop people from parking there. And it doesn’t stop an errant car from breaching the sidewalk. My plans have the road narrowing at the intersection to force daylighting, but there will also be bollards to protect pedestrians from those cars should they exit their lanes. The bollards will also visually narrow the lane which will encourage cars to slow down. Narrower lanes will help with that as well.”
Kili’s expression softened as he listened. “That all sounds good.”
“It is,” Fili replied. It will encourage more foot traffic, which will bring more sales to all these little shops. There will still be street parking, and the parking behind the shops, but what already exists is actually more than adequate, it could actually stand to be reduced to make the downtown even more walkable.”
Kili raised his eyebrows.
“Not what you expected?”
“No,” Kili shook his head. “That’s not what I expected at all.”
“Sometimes it’s good to be surprised,” Fili replied with a wink.
“It is. But it also solves some inner conflict I had been having.”
“Oh?” Fili cocked his head.
Kili reached out with the pretense of brushing a strand of hair from Fili’s face, but it was just an excuse to trace his thumb over Fili’s cheekbone. “Yeah,” he replied softly. “And that’s that I didn’t want our town being ruined by more parking and more cars, but I also really wanted to invite you back to mine and to find out how much of a night owl you are.”
“Oh.”

wait I thought the dodo posted animal welfare/rescue content? What is shady about that corporation/brand? :0
hi i just woke up hopefully i can word my thoughts! so sorry if none of this makes sense ahshshg im not like a professional in these spaces just someone very into animal welfare so bear with me here. this is all from memory as well because i refuse to watch a bunch of dodo videos but i doubt they have changed at all judging by my quick skimming of their account lol
basically it...is and it isnt. Not all the dodos content is bad on technicality. but the people behind it clearly dont actually care about accurate information or animal welfare at all, or at least not in a way that actually helps animals.
concerning point one: improper keeping of wild animals. theres many videos on the dodo of wild animals being kept as household pets, where they most certainly are not thriving lmao. Most of their content is dogs atp at least but theres still a hefty amount of wild animals. foxes, deer, raccoons, opossum, and monkeys i just saw from a quick scroll. not the monkeys good lord the poor things. the dodo promotes and shares this content, these wild animals playing with domestic ones (unsafe), the keeping of monkeys is especially bad they cannot mentally thrive in a home environment and should not be cuddling dogs 😭 all these animals are going to suffer. they are not domesticated, they are not fit to live by humans and get their needs met outside of a zoo where they have an entire enclosure and team of people looking after them. opossums are also if i remember incredibly tricky to keep healthy in captivity and almost always become dangerously overweight in the hands of pet owners, if not always.
ive seen the dodo post 'heartwarming' videos of baby animal rescue by the layperson and how 'cute' it is that the animal got attached and now has to live as a pet. its not cute. its not heartwarming. what you did was fail to rescue the animal. take it to a professional so it can be released properly. if the animal gets habituated to humans, then you failed. it is a failure of a rescue, not cute. organizations try their best to PREVENT that usually.
concerning point 2: promoting dangerous animal pairs. small prey animals and cats are the most common. cat saliva is dangerously toxic to small rodents, lizards, and birds. they should never be put together. every time i see a video of a cat 'playing' with a little hamster or something i die a bit its so stressful. these animals are often stressed by the cats as well. cats have prey drive, instinct. they are going to kill your hamster girl. they just are.
concerning point 3: rampant anthropomorphism. im not sure if people understand what i mean by that so let me try and explain. anthropomorphism is the name for the human tendency to apply human thoughts, emotions, and morals, to inhuman objects and creatures. its what we do. we view things from the only lens we know. however, to do this to animals so freely without a second thought is horrifically damaging. animals are not people. the dodo promotes false images of what animals are feeling and thinking, and applies human concepts of what 'freedom' and 'respect' is to them if that makes sense. its the basic thing all animal rights activists do- which, animal rights activists advocate for animals to have the same rights as humans. the term gets watered down and accepted but most of them genuinely want this, something incredibly damaging for these animals.
anthropomorphism leads to abuse. each animal is different and needs different needs for its own health, not what a human thinks it would want in the animals place. a common point is to say "what if that was you" to a farm animal. its not me. because i am not a cow. a cow has no concept of caring about freedom. it cares that its well fed and healthy. or insisting animals are feeling guilty for something, or insisting they dont have instinct or prey drive and 'would never' because they 'know hes family', or other human views of what animals are feeling instead of understanding what is really going on, which, surprise, damages the animal greatly. they need to be cared for as an animal, not a human.
concerning point 4: a common talking point among animal rights activists, as you can guess, is veganism and completely stopping animal agriculture. this is obviously not good. i wont get into veganism right now unless someone wants me to(but living in a house with a family of animal rights activists vegans, i know first hand unfortunately.) i dont remember what videos exactly but i know the dodo has spread these points in the past, maybe not outright, but with falsified information about farms and livestock. animal farming is not evil. if i have to see one more video of "omg the mother cow is crying for her baby 😭think before you buy meat.." and its a cow crying to be bred bc shes in heat i will explode LMFAO. and then they bring in a calf to reunite with her thats clearly an entirely different breed they just bought for the video to make people sad. not talking about a dodo video there just a general genre of video but i wouldnt be surprised if the dodo posted one of those too 💀.that space is rich with dangerous misinfo about animal welfare and animals themselves, prioritizing human feelings over what the animals actually need. anyway the dodo tends to post content from that point of view
im sure the dodo fakes a lot of the content. in general like. livestock arent just laying near dead on the road from farm trucks after falling out. and other stuff but i dont remember specifics but its a pretty common thing in the animal rights activist scene. believe it or not farmers want their animals alive and healthy for good product if nothing else. mass factory farming and neglect is a product of capitalism not a product of "inherently unethical farming"
if anyone thinks "well, the dodo might not know all this" then they should not be running a widely viral brand about animals. full stop. they dont care. if they did they wouldve long since changed. they care about what makes people feel good, not what is good for the animals. there is no excuse to not know at least this basic information if you are running an account like that. i see a lot of abuse online from people who dont know better because the average person knows next to nothing about animal welfare beyond how to keep a dog alive. and i wish desperately there was more education on this stuff but it is what it is. i will never blame someone for not knowing something as long as they are willing to learn. the disconnect from animals and understanding them in this world is a huge problem, especially the disconnect of where you get your food. but they do not get that excuse.
tl;dr dodo promotes neglectful and dangerous keeping of animals, and false information about them.

Aside from anything written under the name NeoCityCollectives on Ao3, Wattpad or here on Tumblr, if you see my writing anywhere, it wasn't posted by me.
If your blog is blank, if you do not have a profile picture, and if you don't have your age in your bio or in a pinned post, I'm blocking you. I'm aware that tumblr has changed and that if you're a new blog then you have to follow a few accounts before you can even get everything figured out so I'm giving any new blank blogs a week to get everything settled. After that, you get blocked.
I will also do an occasional sweep and block any blogs that don't interact with my posts. You don't have to interact with everything that I post but if you've been following me for a while and don't interact with something, I'm going to assume you're inactive or a bot.
I'm a black plus-sized fan so anytime I write anything, I'm thinking of my black plus-sized crew. I may not always specify it but my chunky honeys are MY default.
Anon hate is laughable at best to me for 2 reasons. Reason number 1 is that I know you wouldn't talk any of that shit without hiding and if you can't talk shit and stand 10 toes on it, why am I gonna take that shit personally? Reason number 2 is that I have a degradation kink. You're literally making my pussy wet. So before you send it in, ask yourself if you're gonna accomplish anything. I guarantee you the answer is always gonna be 'no'.
Disclaimers
I do not take requests on the regular. You can thank this dumb bitch. Rest assured, if you sent me a request before 31 March 2023, I will still post it when it's complete. I will also be blocking accounts that are empty and do not interact with my work
I will never write anything NSFW for Chenle. Ever.
I label things with warnings so if you see something that's labeled and it's something that you don't like, don't read it. I thought this was basic common sense but I had an anon trying to blame me for the fact that they chose to read a CNC fic I wrote because it triggered a traumatic experience for them. My warnings are very much visible. If you don't like CNC, observe the big ass warnings that I put on any of my CNC fics and don't fucking read them. Simple enough. I don't condone or encourage rape on any level. Please don't come into my ask box and accuse me of being an advocate for rapists because I will not be sparing your feelings. If you ignore my CNC fic warnings and proceed to read them despite the warnings and are triggered by what you read, that's on you. Don't be that person.
I will not be writing for anyone who is promoting or consuming products that are fueling the genocide in Palestine. Anything previously written will stay posted but I will not be writing anything new.

DOYEON: "I think that there's a pressure to be a new, elevated version of myself every time we meet our fans after a break, and it's something I've stopped trying to do so consciously"
DOYEON's interview with weverse magazine [FULL INTERVIEW] ENG
You mentioned recently that you make sure that you visit the precious people in your life that you don't see as regularly as you did before your debut, more often than you did in the first few years after debut. What prompted this?
DOYEON: "Nothing in particular. I think that as I get older, I start to better understand the importance of maintaining these relationships, because anything could happen. Not to start things out on a low note or anything, (laughs) but I think taking a broader look at my life relative to the world, I was able to know how many precious people and things I have in my life, that I'm not able to cherish as regularly as I might like to. So, I started making that effort with that in mind."
I think you must have had time to think about all of the people in your life. It probably helped that there were so many concerts and you were able to see the product of your life's work more broadly.
DOYEON: "Maybe. I always feel more reflective after we travel, because I know that there's a version of myself in another dimension that's not doing this. He's probably working part-time somewhere, getting another degree so he can take over his parent's business. (laughs) Honestly, last year, I had a lot of thoughts. About what I was really doing, whether or not I was really suited to be a singer, how much ambition I should bring into the new year. Many thoughts."
Why did you wonder if you were really suited to be a singer last year?
DOYEON: (laughs) "Well, it's not that I doubted whether or not I suited it, so much as it being that [last year] I figured out many things about who I am that made me feel like maybe I'd expected too much of myself when I decided that this was the line of work I would go into. I think it was seeing myself, my own face, in every department store I went into that made me feel it on a different level. I felt like maybe I was seeing someone else? That feeling? TRUE NORTH is a group that's achieved a lot, but there was a time that I couldn't feel those achievements here at home and so I had a lot of thoughts at that time about what success really means to me and how much that feeling of success can be attributed to my main job as a singer. However, last year was also a year where I was really forced to advocate for myself so that this year [2023] could be a year full of even more blessings and I feel that I'm finally able to understand that suiting something is a more complicated sentiment. Ironically, I think I suited being a singer a lot more when I had those thoughts."
Well, I can imagine your fans are happy to see you through it. You have a notoriously close relationship with your group's fanbase, is that something that contributes to these thoughts, or do you find that having that connection soothes you?
DOYEON: "Somehow, both? I spend a lot of time monitoring fans reactions to things as they release and I feel good when reactions are good, and somewhat ambiguously when the reactions aren't what I expected. Even from debut, fan expectations were something I tried to keep in mind when we were preparing for a comeback and I think with every comeback, rather than feel assured that fan loyalty would continue to carry us even further, I found more things to worry about. (laughs) It's one thing if I'm happy and satisfied with the end product, because most of my career is just bringing the concepts and the songs that other people bring to us with love, to life. I'm not as hands-on in that process as I would like to be. Really, my main goal with every promotion cycle is to do the best I can, knowing that I have personally improved. I think that there's a pressure to be a new, elevated version of myself every time we meet our fans after a break, and it's something I've stopped trying to do so consciously, but when you're face-to-face with fans again after such a long time, there's always that anxiety that they could walk in with a certain expectation that you can't always meet. I don't like the idea of a fan leaving disappointed and so I treat every stage and promotion like it's the very first, and hope that my passion and my love can be felt that way, rather than me trying to change the way I do things too often. I think, at this point, they understand my heart."
Do you feel that there's a big difference between the DOYEON of today and the DOYEON that debuted in 2019?
DOYEON: "I was 19 then, so I definitely hope so. I don't know, I'm someone that has a hard time perceiving themself. Even during debut, I thought that I was coming across as someone cool and oppa-like, as one of the oldest members, but (laughs) I think maybe I was just too cute(?) to take seriously. Of course, between now and then, my image has become something a lot more refined, I think that, for the most part, my fans understand who I am and what I'm like in a more nuanced way. I feel like fans are even actively trying to push me to show more diverse sides of myself so that people who only know me as the make-up boy or the skincare boy they see in ads, get a better understanding of what I'm capable of. The DOYEON of 2019 wasn't very interested in new things, he was happy doing what he was supposed to do and going home at the end of every day, but the DOYEON of today feels more hungry? He wants to be someone who can consume many things and satisfy the people who support him who are also hungry for more."
Does having been a fan in the past help you better understand how fans feel?
DOYEON: "I definitely feel like it helps. There's a type of love between a fan and an idol that simply cannot be replicated. You don't feel this way about your friends or your loved ones; it's something symbiotic. The fan cannot exist without the idol and the idol cannot exist without the fan; we make each other's existences happier. I'm grateful and accepting of everything they do and hope that they feel the love and respect that I have for them through my actions. I mostly put the satisfaction of my fans above my own happiness, but my fans also do the same, and when you realize that, you realize that there's really nothing like it."
That's an interesting way to look at it. Walking back to the hunger you mentioned that you feel, and that you think your fans feel, what is something that you're hungry for this year?
DOYEON: (laughs) "Even more love. Love! Unconditionally, love. I want to gain the love and recognition of many more people and take on many more opportunities. I want to be a name that you see everywhere and the happiest, most loved I've ever been."

hi. I am genuinely not trying to start shit or argue here, can I ask why you are so against labels (that have been around for ages) like transgender, aromantic, polyamorous, and queer (when its used to describe someone who isn't a strictly homosexual man)? as someone who identifies with multiple of these labels I think that we should let people be and let them call themselves what they want. even I don't understand or agree with every single label in the queer community, but as long as it doesn't hurt others I'm not gonna go around arguing, cause in the end it won't get anyone anywhere. I am genuinely curious.
(although I do agree with you on one thing, that being a furry/into certain kinks doesn't automatically make you queer)
First, thank you for your very considerate and kindly-worded ask. I appreciate wanting to have an open and honest dialogue about this issue.
Second, I understand the exact thinking behind “we should let someone use a term if it doesn’t hurt anyone,” because I was very much in this mindset before getting into radical feminism.
But the problem is a) these labels DO hurt people and b) words need to accurately describe reality. Otherwise they’re meaningless.
To go into more detail:
a) Certain “Labels” DO hurt people:
"Queer" is a term that is offensive to many same-sex attracted people, especially in older generators. For decades it was used as a horrific slur, especially against gay men, and is often associated with gay bashings. Ergo, when people label themselves as "queer", they're identifying with a slur that hurt an untold amount of lgbt people in the past. It also forces the word to become detached from its original meeting, and thus erases the very history of it.
"Pansexual" as a term is offensive to many bisexuals. It seeks to promote itself as an elevated, more inclusive sexuality by being like "we are attracted to ALL Peoples regardless of gender! #heartsnotparts." The implicit meaning of this is that the existing sexuality (bi) is not inclusive enough. Other terms like omnisexual have the same issue. Funnily enough though, Pan has become less used in recent years and instead replaced with the above "queer".
b) "Labels" to be worth a cent, need to accurately convey reality. I.e those who identify as homosexual need to be only attracted to the same sex. Otherwise anyone can identify into that label, and co-opt the resources, history and culture of that group. As such, what labels do is help us identify which groups actually belong in the lgb community as it was founded- by and for same-sex attracted people.
Transgender isn't an incorrect term. Some people decide to transition to the opposite sex. I don't disagree with that as an experience that happens, I'm critical of the conflation of sex and gender by trans advocates. Despite all their slogans saying otherwise, I've seen this conflation increase exponentially in the last few years particularly in regards to single-sex women's spaces and experiences of sexual orientations. I also want to point that historically the "t" community involved in lgb spaces was overwhelmingly gay men who identified as transexuals due to intense homophobia and dysphoria. They're already included in the "g". The problem is that the modern trans community has less and less to do with the original meaning. But that's a different conversation.
Polyamorous is not a sexual orientation. No one is born with a specific attraction against multiple people. This is in contrast to lgb people who are born as their sexuality. Ie. A person is born gay, not polyamorous. The latter is a description of the type of relationships people engage in. It also doesn't belong as a label in the lgb community, because heterosexual people can be polyamorous by only wanting to be with multiple partners of the opposite sex. The lgb community doesn't mean "everyone who isn't explicitly heterosexual, gender-conforming, monogamous." It's of a specific group of same-sex attracted people with a shared history, experiences, and occassionally culture.
In the same vein, neither aromatics and/or asexuals belong in the lgb group. Because they lack same-sex attraction. Not helping things is the "grey-aspec" orientations that muddle up the waters by trying to explain every minute facet of sexual attraction. I.e. only feeling sexual attraction sometimes does not make you lgb.
Overall what I'm getting at is that words have meaning. Trying to change the meaning of certain words, implicitly tries to erase their history. Trying to include every label under the sun in the lgb community, means that you're ascribing a history, culture and experience to a label that may have next to no relationship with that original community. You can have and use as many labels are you like but at the end of the day, if they're being used to co-opt experiences of same-sex attracted people then they are indeed hurting people.
To be explicitly clear:
Sexual orientation equals who you're attracted to.
Not how, or how many, how little or how much.
And who you're attracted to is based on biological sex. You are innately born with this- probably the most foundational point of the lgb community.

Frank Kafka once said, “I am constantly trying to communicate something incommunicable, to explain something inexplicable, to tell about something I only feel in my bones and which can only be experienced in those bones. Basically it is nothing other than this fear we have so often talked about, but fear spread to everything, fear of the greatest as of the smallest, fear, paralyzing fear of pronouncing a word, although this fear may not only be fear but also a longing for something greater than all that is fearful.”
It is this weird feeling. In a way eerie and frightening, yet familiar. Ever since I can remember I have always had this strange feeling. It has always been there since I was a child. Like a yearning almost? But for what? I do not think I will ever be able to explain this feeling.
What happens when a writer stops writing?
What happens when they cannot possibly think of anything else to write?
When they come to a standstill and there is nothing more left to say, what happens?
I feel so desperate to obtain this feeling. It is not here on earth and I know I will not find it here. This is not a suicide note and I am not promoting or advocating for suicide (in some cases, anyways, I.e assisted suicide for different illnesses), although when I write in this manner it certainly seems that way.
It is not a suicide note, but if and when the time comes or when the occasion arises, this writing will be something to inspect.
We are all just humans doing human things looking for human connections.
No one deserves the bad things that happen to them. There are bad people in the world, like really bad people. I do not want to be one of those. My heart is good I know it is.
And when someone brings out the worst in you it does not feel good.
There are many not-good-feelings in this life and that is one of them.
After real, profound, self-reflection one realizes their wrongdoings and tries to work on them, hopefully. It feels good being a good person. It feels freeing and calm and peaceful. Not lying to yourself, to others, to anything or anyone about anything or anyone. It feels nice not being intertwined in everyone’s life things and more things and all the things. Does that make sense?
It is like a Roman spectacle, where there exist hierarchies and each level of class gets their own bonuses. However I have no interesting in watching.
-footnote about Roman spectacles: started as a way to show the gods entertainment in return for eudaimonia.
I start rambling and then none of my writing makes sense, to anyone else I do not think, but to me it all does.

"Pretends to be holier than thou while going after people who sexualized Jamie while he also posted tweets about getting fucked by Henry Creel."-You really can't make this up. You are the problem but they are as bad as Jess trying to be Jamie's bodyguard. This behavior is not normal. They think meeting Jamie gives a right to bully you into being quiet. How is someone that unhinged over a relationship? Both Jamie and Jess need to be cautious of fans such as these. Very unhinged.
Though I'm aware that my saying all of these things about Jess comes across as me trying to "protect" or "save" Jamie, I swear that is not my intent. I have started this blog (and continue it) because for I didn't know who she was. My goal was to find out more about her. The more I learned the more concerning it got. The more I observed fandom behaviour surrounding Jess (and what people policed and did not like) the more I found myself wondering if this wasn't a common opinion. That people did not know these things about her. I also wanted to make awareness of these issues for people who didn't know these things.
I would assume that Jamie has to know a lot of these things already, unless she lied to him or somehow explained them away as non-issues as she seems to have the ability to do on her fitness blog. I don't know. What I can say is that I wouldn't think that I know Jess better than Jamie (or people who actually have a relationship with her) so I also never had the intent of making this blog to inform Jamie of these problems. Things I'm sure he's already aware of (if true) or dismisses (if not true). I'd also be very egotistical to believe that he'd be interested in reading this blog at all because I don't think he is, and if he did I doubt he'd learn something from it he wasn't already aware of.
I know people will assume that I'm lying when I say this but my honest intent was never to protect him, infantilize him, defend him, or save him. I am very aware that he more than likely will never know this blog exists and even if he figures it out at some point, he's not going to know who I am (nor is that my intent either). I don't want to have a conversation with him (or more accurately that is not my intent, I suppose it would be very rude to not talk to him if he contacted me but it's not my goal and I don't believe it'll ever happen).
The same applies to Jess. I don't advocate anyone harass or attack her. Yes, I'm aware that I did ask her how she was affiliated with Tommy Hilfiger because I was very baffled by those posts she made but I don't see that as harassment as much as I genuinely was hoping she'd explain it and prove me wrong. The fact that she blocked me within minutes of asking says all that it needs to say.
The reason I'm explaining all of this is because this is how I feel and how I think. These people attacking me have a very different mentality. They clearly think they are protecting and defending Jamie (as well as Jess). They believe they have some special connection to him or they will achieve it with this behaviour. They have developed a very parasocial fantasy relationship with both Jamie and Jess. They idolize them, infantilize them, worship them, and refuse to see them as human beings with flaws like all of the rest of us have. Yet, at the same time, they believe they are better than everyone else who has an opinion or points out the flaws where their faves might be problematic.
This is not a relationship they are in, they have any control over, they know anything about, or they have any part of. Yet, they spend a very significant amount of time dedicated to "protecting it", promoting it, idealizing it, shipping it, and posting about how great it is without examining it beyond surface value and their own fantasy of what it must be like to date Jamie. I already admit that what I do here is not particularly nice, nor would I think that Jamie would find it nice (I actually don't know what he would think but I would have to believe that he'd still find this less offensive than how these bullies are behaving with telling me to kill myself). Though I don't believe the entire fandom is like this, in fact, I'm sure the majority isn't (they either don't care about Jess, don't care what I think, don't pay attention to me etc,) or they agree with me in silence. I think that it becomes a problem with a vocal minority of people who are so incredibly toxic that they bully everyone else into submission so they aren't allowed to have their opinions and post what they want.
Ultimately, this is a blog where I'm using sources and information on the internet to back up statements I make, as well as speculate on the situation and have an opinion. To me, it should be quite obvious the difference between these things and I am in no way saying everything I've ever said is true. I'm providing the information as it exists, adding commentary, and letting others read it. Meanwhile, they actively tell others what they can and can't post and how to behave whilst ignoring the "rules" they set up themselves. I will never understand this mentality but it's something that happens quite often in fandoms and I'm very sorry that even just a fraction of these types of people ruin it for everyone else in what is otherwise a pretty decent fandom to hang out in.

“For Entertainment Purposes Only”
“For Entertainment Purposes Only”
I assume if you’re on Facebook you know about Instagram, Tik Tok, Snap Chat and all that other bull.  I even bet you get contacted by promotion pages trying to get you to be one of their advocates and offered money or free merchandise, it’s all about the likes for likes on these platforms, everyone’s either a model or an advocate of something, all you have to do is add them and comment and then like their page and get 10 or 15 of your friends to do the same to get you a shout out or a post!  Sounds exciting like Ferraris, champagne, yachts and private planes, but really, it’s some overweight couch potato pushing a bunch of nobodies to make themselves feel better about where they’re at in life, which is nowhere. It’s no more than a pyramid scheme.  But somebody is collecting…
When I get likes on my last 4 or 5 photos in a row, and it’s some attractive woman on a yacht or a cabana, trying to shout out at me, but only has 8 to 12 pics, I know the game so I play along, but I go wild with my responses, half the shit I can’t post on here, I get suspended for my PG-13 stuff.  I say some of the freakiest shit, you wouldn’t believe it, I am the one doing it and I can’t believe I do it but it passes the time and I die laughing.  I Goggle things like “Handicap Penis” or “Monster penises,’ and my favorite, “Massive shits” so when they want payment to promote me, I send them these pics which are all online, their responses are hilarious and then I’m like, no wait that was an accident, that pic was supposed to go to someone else, but here’s my payment information, but then I’ll send something else weird.  I do whatever I can to waste their time.  They deserve it!  One person cracked me up so bad because of bugging me so bad I kept sending pics and he asked; “What did you eat?!”
I like to entertain and in return I like to be entertained.  I love making my own memes, I had to explain to my mother this week what a meme was. It was a long conversation. (Read up on memes if you don’t know what they are so I don’t have to explain it, I only post my own, which I am very proud of) I enjoy a good laugh and being entertained as well.  Oh and before I forget, I take full responsibility for asking for nude pictures, I tend to do that.  It’s not my intent or me being rude or inappropriate which no doubt it is, I love having friends that except me for just being me while ignoring me, except, well never mind, that’s for another day!  I’m always the guy in the crowd that shouts (“Show your tits!”)  I did it under my breath at a funeral once, that relationship ended abruptly, I was shocked!  I even brought gift cards to hand out, I didn’t see any other gifts. Anyways, I kept those, I ate at Arby’s for like 2 months straight.  True Story!
The Memphis Lee speaks, now ya’ heard!
 That’s how I roll.!!!

“I Am YEG Arts” Series: Connor Yuzwenko-Martin
Tumblr media
Photo: Connor Yuzwenko-Martin by Alexandra Hickox, Undivided Productions
Imagine if your job included seeking peace and justice wherever it was needed. Connor Yuzwenko-Martin doesn’t have to. In his role as a consultant and educator, his days are full helping organizations and theatre companies identify inclusion gaps and improve their engagement with the Deaf community. As a Deaf creator himself, that makes Yuzwenko-Martin both the advocate he needs and wants to be to others. One of the recent ways he’s doing both? By writing and producing an all-Deaf stage production, performed in ASL—the first, we hope, of many. Actor, producer, playwright, and communications specialist, this week’s “I Am YEG Arts” story belongs to Connor Yuzwenko-Martin.
Tell us about your connection to Edmonton and why you’ve made it your home.
I was born here in 1991 but flirted with other cities during my twenties when I was out exploring the world. I always thought I might move somewhere else for a year or two, but things have always tended to conspire to keep me here, for good reasons! Whether it’s a sudden new theatre opportunity that calls for my skill set or something more domestic (like now having a big dog to take care of), it seems that Edmonton is my permanent home base. Now that I’ve delved deeper into the theatre community, I find it harder to imagine living anywhere else. The culture is so sincerely welcoming, and I can’t help but get the sense that folks are trying so hard. Art isn’t easy, and keeping a smile on your face after a long day of rehearsal or creative development can be even harder. All that said, I do think there’s value in living and working in another part of the world for a little while just to see how you stretch and grow through that (if curious, Vancouver Island would be my first choice!).
What was it about theatre that initially drew you to it/resonated with you?
It’s that chill you get when you’re witnessing a story being told well on stage. You’re simultaneously immersed in the story, while also becoming aware of the astounding craft and care that’s coming to life in this space. This is also part of my newer interest in producing (rather than acting) on stage. As a Deaf person, I have never been able to access the mainstream theatrical experience the way I would like to, since it’s completely dependent on the theatre company or group’s preparation with ASL inclusion or integration. That’s made me extremely hungry to build more capacity for inclusive and Deaf-centered theatre in Edmonton and Alberta.
Tell us a little about your work as a consultant and educator.
I’ve done everything ranging from presenting on Deaf education at the Alberta Teacher’s Conference to helping launch the annual Coming Out Monologues at University of Alberta Pride. Most recently, I filtered all of my experience through my Diploma in Public Relations at MacEwan University (2021), which helped me decide some of my next career steps.
Currently, I’m softly planning and building my Deaf arts collective, which will be a cross between a public relations agency, a professional advocate, and an independent theatre production company. My priority will be building meaningful partnerships with Deaf artists across Canada to provide services like grant-writing assistance, promotion for their work, and fierce advocacy in situations where it’s needed. Far too often, Deaf folk have to do everything themselves, including educating their employers regarding rights that are already well-explained in legal jurisprudence. I hope to provide a personalized and responsive solution to those everyday frustrations, while coordinating with existing Deaf organizations and associations that often are volunteer-run but hold massive volumes of historical experience that we can leverage. More and more peers are already becoming aware of these inclusion gaps and seeking my advice and guidance, so it makes sense to bring all of this freelance work under one name and brand. Keep an eye out for the big launch!
What does community mean to you, and where do you find it?
I define my community as those who can connect and support each other with the least friction. This doesn’t mean there’s no friction—some is good and even necessary for understanding each other better. For me, this often means fluency in ASL, which brings us back to the perennial communication barrier that keeps the Deaf world pressed up against the fringes of broader society. Deafness has always been central to my lived experience, yet it continues to be so difficult to express it in mutually understood ways that help a less-aware audience navigate toward active allyship and positive collaboration.
I’ve pivoted toward theatre, as it has been the most safe space I’ve found for experimenting with words, signs, images, and motifs to continue the work of developing a bona fide Deaf mythology that future generations can enjoy and treasure. Think “library of beloved Disney movies, but with Deafness centred.” I would be honoured if even one of my works joined that future canon.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d had when starting out?
“Always leave time for something to be done more slowly and deliberately.” I think most of us suffer from a rush-rush in our twenties, where we think the world will literally vanish if we don’t do everything we possibly can, as quickly as possible. I’ve moved at blazing speed for most of my life because I’ve often been the minority in a room filled with hearing people. Whatever a hearing person does well, I usually have to do twice as well in order to get the same recognition or treatment. Trying to keep this up over the years nearly broke me, and I’ve taken massive steps in the other direction to heal and realign my habits. Nowadays, I try to approach everything mindfully, whether it’s grant-writing (asking, “who else deserves to have input on my project?”) or social media content creation (fewer posts but with as much access as the platform allows, like alt text and video descriptions). It’s paying off already because I feel so much more connected to everything and everyone around me. I’ve been forgotten and left out of the room many times—I would hate to become the one forgetting and leaving others out.
Tell us about someone whose support and advice have guided you.
This is actually a difficult question for me to answer. I believe it’s because, for most of my life, my creative work has been done in hearing—and English dominant—contexts, which means that my peers often can only observe my work superficially and offer their best thoughts based on that. Yes, I’ve received so much support, affirmation, opportunity, and recognition from the Edmonton community—but I can’t honestly say that I have received that “pivotal piece of advice” that begins to inform everything I do from that point on. I have recently begun to connect more deeply with Deaf artists across Canada, thanks to better funding for Deaf arts and more centralized events like SOUND OFF: A Deaf Theatre Festival that is hosted in Edmonton every early spring. This gives me hope and direction for my work in building capacity in my local community so that, perhaps, I can be that mentor and advice-giver for others down the road.
Who’s someone inspiring you right now?
This is the perfect time to mention Ebony Gooden as another local (Calgary-based) Deaf professional and creative who has impressed me beyond words with her vision, grace, and power. I have seen her work as a mediator in a few situations to help reconcile complicated situations of layered harm. Her incisiveness and nuance have a transformative effect on people in the room. As someone who seeks peace and justice wherever it is needed, I do my best to remember her techniques and emulate them in my everyday life now.
What’s one thing you’d like to “un-teach” people about the Deaf community (or Deaf culture)?
We are the experts on our individual access needs, but we’re not responsible for paying for those accessibility solutions! Imagine if I had to pay for an interpreter every time I go to a doctor appointment or a meeting with my banker. That means I have to pay a communication premium fee in order to access the exact same service a hearing person can. I wish I wasn’t surprised anymore when a secretary emails me back protesting that they received an invoice from the interpreter, but I tend to be a relentless optimist.
Many businesses and organizations lack a budget line for access spending, which is actually a best practice discussed in the entry-level course I took at MacEwan. It really shows how little widespread understanding and awareness there is in Edmonton (and I can confidently say across Canada) about actual good practices around accessibility. Most folks cheer equality and inclusion but don’t seem to pause and consider their own active role in driving progress or holding it back.
Tell us about the stage production you’re currently writing and producing.
After Faust is a spiritual sequel to the classic Doctor Faustus, which was written in Shakespeare’s time by a lesser-known playwright, Christopher Marlowe. Ever since I read the original story as a fifteen-year-old and then designed a one-act play version for drama class, I’ve been unable to let go of the play’s dark threads. It’s as if those threads had stitched themselves into my recently uncloseted soul, ensuring that I wouldn’t forget it until I had answered all of my own questions about the world of Faustus: What really happened between the arrogant doctor and the demon, Mephistopheles? Was it really just an unholy contract void of any sentiment, or were there perhaps small glances and touches that could only be implied back in the sixteenth century by a historically-almost-verified queer playwright, but in our era can be teased out carefully and lovingly? This queer allegory plays out alongside a deeply personal reflection of my own family’s recent loss. It is absolutely an exercise in slicing out a part of my heart and placing it onstage in the hopes that others will be able to connect to the same slice in their own. The goal is to commiserate in the midst of inexplicable tragedy, which seems very necessary nowadays. In terms of practical production, I’m proudly billing this as the first Deaf-written, Deaf-directed, Deaf-acted, and Deaf-produced stage play in recent Alberta history! It is not my first complete written work, but it is most excitingly the first of my work that will be produced on stage in partnership with Common Ground Arts Society, as part of RISER Edmonton 2023.
When you’re taking a break from a project, what will we likely find you doing?
I’ve been seriously investing in my own health and fitness, so you can find me at the Commonwealth gym a few times a week lifting weights or taking my St. Bernard-mix, Moka, on epically long walks in the river valley! On rest days, I’ll be watching one of the dozen-or-so different shows I usually have on the go or playing the latest Nintendo game. I’m also doing my best to maintain a reading streak of one book a month, which can include graphic novels—anything that’s creative! Right now I’m reading Interdependent Magic: Disability Performance in Canada, a collection of four scripts by disabled Canadian playwrights, with commentary by Jessica Watkin.
You visit Edmonton 20 years from now. What do you hope has changed? What do you hope has stayed the same?
We’re seeing the changes and foundation stones of intersectional collaborations and creation being put in place now, but I will always wish it could move a little faster. I believe it is very achievable that in 20 years intersectional arts and theatre—think Deaf, Queer, Black, Indigenous—will not only be an exceptional aspect of programming but also a well-established and critically appreciated component of the wider cultural landscape of Edmonton. A greater number of artists should be living well and happily with funding that allows them to back off the grind and simply live, move, feel, and allow new stories to emerge from our incidental ways of being. As we venture further into the age of climate change mitigation, the public will need these moments of imagination and solace more than before.
