#But in my plot outline Google Doc it's all sorta going like

Note
Hi! I’m a fellow writer! Well, sorta a writer. I’ve always enjoyed writing since I like doing character studies, and outlining all sorts of plot. My notebooks and google docs are usually filled to the brim with WIP’s and writing prompts, however… none of these are really finished, because when I get to the actual part of writing itself; descriptions, dialogue, pacing, grammar. I usually get stumped here, and lose confidence to keep writing. I’d always find myself rewriting one paragraph, because usually, something is either lacking in description or there’s too much, the dialogues are unnatural and I’m usually left unsatisfied. So I drop it.
So I wanted to ask: How can I develop my writing skills, and or gain more confidence in my writing? I’m tired of letting good plots go to waste because I’m too scared of getting poor results.
This is such a great question, and the really simplistic answer is just to read lots and write lots.
The more you write, the more confident you'll become. And approaching the books you read like a writer, and taking the time to look at them analytically will start to show you what writing techniques and styles resonate with you, and which don't.
If you want a bit more detail, we have the article below available in the Reading Room! It's also got links to more details on close reading, developing a consistent writing practice, and how to find your unique writer's voice.

Spencer: Did you plan your story entirely from start to finish or did you plan some parts and go from there?
Thank you for asking this! I really love when asks are directed towards me :- )
Originally, back in May of 2023, I just knew I wanted to start off with a scene from For Whom The Ball Rolls and maybe branch off from there. I didn't fully have a book plot, just a few ideas.
Eventually, I made a short chapter-base for the story:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
^(these are very old, I made them in June if I remember correctly.)
As you see, much is different from it. Mascot was only supposed to be in chapter nine, and chapters 11 and twelve were supposed to be just one chapter. I never had a full story, and even now I am thinking of things i could have added or altered or completely gotten rid of. I don't believe that'll fully go away, but it's good to see I notice mistakes, making it known that I am improving.
When I finished a chapter, I would almost immediately make a Google Doc for the basis/storyboard for the next one. I considered these technical drafts/storyboarding, just to get my full ideas out and plan it all before writing.
But, for Book 2, I was almost completely lost. I had a basic idea, but there was no ending. I just knew I wanted Petey to come back and Li'l Sydney to be aged up.
Originally, a side plot would be about Mascot and Peter falling in love, or at least trying to confess to each other. But, I decided it would have been impractical and not fitting with the story.
Instead of chapter concepts and storyboards, I had started writing my ideas down in a Samsung note, until that became the ENTIRE story outline.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As I said before, I hadn't even thought of an ending to Book 2 when I had started writing it. I had to put the story on short hiatus back in Janurary, and I was really discouraged. But I actually had a dream about the ending, and from that dream I finally had an idea.
Another note is that there was originally going to be a 3rd book: Past.
That's why the first one is "Present" and the second one is "Future." There were going to be 3: Past, Present, and Future.
But, chapter 5 had already taken that role, and I didn't want to fully delve into Sydney and Peter's past. It will never be fully discovered or fully remembered.
Basically, to answer your question- I hadn't fully thought of the story when writing, it just sorta came to me while listening to songs or dreaming in my sleep. Yay!
Sorry if this seems like too much information, I just really like raking asks directed towards me, and I love responding with loads of information. #autism ^_^

Moots said they wanna hear about WIPs and I feel like I gotta get this brainrot out anyways so HERE I GO
I've only got three projects I'm actively working on right now, all of which are Owl House fanfics, although I've got ideas here and there for other things (video games I might've made if I weren't so burnt out, ttrpg characters that might need their own goddamn settings and stories to themselves, a Code Lyoko fanfic, music (mostly loads of disconnected song lyrics), 3D avatars, etc).
The Owl House fanfics in question are three(-ish?) fold:
Theseus Who?, a mostly-canon-compliant 5+1 post-titanification headcanon compilation that DOESN'T just let Luz keep her titan form (mostly it's just a bunch of changes along the lines of when Hunter's eyes changed color after Flapjack saved him). - It's actually sort of a tie-in to another, bigger fic I'm writing that's gonna be point 2, so you can assume anything mentioned in this one will happen throughout the timeline of the next one as well. - I've currently already got the 5 written, so now I just need to buckle down and finish the +1, unless I decide to do another sweep of edits (I think the excessive parentheticals might be too excessive). - - I only started it like a week ago, and I've been waiting for motivation to strike again to let me finish it for like half that time.
Masha and the Very Normal Nocedas, a mostly-canon-compliant sorta-multimedia veesha longfic based on the dramatic irony of Masha slowly driving themself nuts trying to piece together what the Deal is with Luz, Vee, and the rest of the Nocedas. - by "sorta-multimedia" i mean its got plaintext segments describing the story, journal segments of Masha recounting events as they remember them and trying to organize their thoughts, chat segments when the characters interact over text, and possibly more if I feel the Need. - I've only outlined the three prologue chapters and the following intermission, only have snippets and vague ideas for scenes for the main bulk of the fic itself, and have only actually written two of the prologue chapters and the intermission. - - won't start posting it until I at least get the third prologue chapter done, so I've got a usable buffer. Hopefully that'll be sooner rather than later.
The Overthinker AU (or "The Artificer AU"? name is also very much a work in progress), a canon rewrite that I think I'll actually split into a bunch of shorter "episodes", so I can appropriately tag each one, rather than tagging one monolithic fic with Everything Under The Sun. The basic premise is "what if The Owl House, but there's more time", both in the meta sense of "not bound by the 20-minute TV episode format" and the diegetic sense of "the broad-strokes plot of the show will happen over a longer in-universe period of time" (though I'm a bit stuck on just how much more time I want to give em). - for the most part, I wanted to put more emphasis on Luz's magical development, and extrapolate a somewhat wider magic system out of what we see in the show, but I also want to go into more detail on how her actions affect those around her, even outside of all the friends she makes (stuff along the lines of the little things the crowd mentioned while protesting Eda's petrification at the end of season 1). - I'm almost (reluctantly) thinking of pulling a Grapes of Wrath with it, structure-wise, by having main plot/character development chapters alternate with shorter intermissions focused on magical exploration, worldbuilding, and so on. - this project is currently just the scribblings of a madwoman in my private discord server and three wildly unfinished fics in my google docs folder - - one of these fics is Something Like a Bible, which is essentially a condensed version of the entire broader project, boiled down to bare plot and occasional commentary. Like a series outline and a plot synopsis rolled into one, though perhaps not quite the series bible it claims to be. - - - honestly I REALLY aughtta work on this one some more, just so I can get most of the Big Ideas out of my head and share them with people. - - the other two fics are currently untitled snippets of scenes from the project, one a sentimental/instructional note from Eda to Luz, and the other sort of a ragefic twist on the ending of Thanks to Them. - this project is gonna include tons of ideas from and allusions to other fics which inspired it/me, such as The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled by IdeaHunter, All that's at Stake by The_Lampman, and Decorative by TheTokenAro, to name a few. - I could make a whole post about this project on its own (and in fact, I have before), talking about all the little changes I'd make, the developments I'd include, the more sweeping changes, the additional themes I'd toss in, and so on, but there are some I REALLY don't think fit well into the "rambling tumblr post" format (and/or just don't want to spoil yet), so I shall Abstain (for now :P).

hey jenn...
so tell me about your plot planning process
oh chi i hate this question so much askfjajfakds
okay okay so i had to think about this because?? i don't do a lot of this consciously. have any of y'all looked at writing advice stuff and tried to make it work for you?? i keep trying and idk... i really tried to be the type of writer with like, outlines and bullet points, and usually i might have notes of some sort somewhere... it's all very much a 'trust the process' um. process. so here's stuff i do? in some semblance of order, but more like for your reading benefit than how it might actually happen.
first of all - i start with a concept (that fucks, obviously). considering the current spn fic i'm writing and the last longfic i wrote (marvel fandom) were both borne of that age old 'i read all the fics with this trope so now i have to write my own', i guess that's a pattern?
second, once i have the beginnings of like, a Thing I Want To Read Badly Enough That I Will Bite The Bullet And Write It Myself, how can i write it, considering like, who i am? for heard from your mother, a spn character getting sent back in time to fix things isn't a totally unique plot, but i am someone who 1. has not actually watched that much spn and 2. really enjoys the early seasons. so pretty quickly i started to think along the lines of 'writing a time travel fix it would require an in-depth knowledge of canon that i don't have past like, s3'. then my brain starts spinning off in all these other directions which leads to -
plot, i guess? by the time i put out the first chapter of heard from your mother i knew how cas got sent back in time, kinda sorta what would happen, and a rough idea of the ending, but no real sign posts. i think the main other thing i knew was that dean and cas end up together before the end of the fic, but even then, i didn't really know how. i also thought it would be a fun idea to give cas a cellphone that sends him anonymous messages as another draw/guide to the story. since pre-pilot was mostly focused on dean and cas meeting and getting together, a lot of energy was focused in trying to get them to be in the same place at the same time, bond, and eventually become an item. which also means -
what stories happen within the story? in any of my longer fics, there's usually an A/B plot going, which can shift and morph and intertwine as the story goes on. In heard from your mother, the A plot is probably dean and cas getting together, up until s1 starts, in which case it's the 'find dad' s1 plot, and the B plot throughout the fic is 'cas needs to figure out what he is and how he got where he is now'. there are shorter c plots (like offscreen stuff that happens with jess, bobby, pamela, etc.) but they're shorter lived.
another thing plot-wise that i don't consciously think of too much but is still important is payoff. these can be big or small, but this fic is SO goddamn long that it's good to idk, give the readers *something*. early in s0, this was dean and cas meeting up again after doing their own thing, like, yay! fun treat! good times! or another clue to what cas is (aka the RIBS chapter). some fun reveal, like seeing an old character pop up again, or maybe another emotional moment, like the resolution of the scarecrow episode rewrite, where dean finally comes out to sam. these are all moments that i personally really enjoyed writing, and if you're in this fic for the long haul, i imagine you're reading and going 'omg, finally!' or 'whoa, cool' - just something to make you pick your head up after however many words.
when i actually sit down to write a chapter, i kind of know where i want things to end up? like a lot of s0 was making sure certain characters met each other, s1 was more or less the same as the canon s1 with more focus on how the characters have grown/changed, and everything else is made up on the spot. like the hunts in s0 were made by me thinking: 'oh this monster got mentioned in an early season of spn, dean probably hunted that before. let's find a town for it to take place in, and maybe write it in a way that highlights one of his character flaws' very much an early monster of the week type of fic - creature story with an aesop somewhere inside that prompts dean (and usually cas) to confront something about themselves and hopefully push themselves closer together. we see this in the chapters dealing with the gillepsie family and the crocotta, probably the most obviously? i try not to beat anyone over the head with it. heard from your mother has a writing style that is sort of like 'here it is, you make sense of what people are thinking/feeling bc i'm not narrating that' which is very spn and male coded of me i think.
if i ever get stuck on how to approach something, i usually will put the fic down and listen to music or read something else, or i just talk out the ideas i have (to a lot of people on tumblr actually! thank you!!) a lot of my writing is latent and i just kind of let it happen. there are definitely deliberate choices for some things i do in this fic (i mentioned this with a previous ask about putting stuff in the plot that could help the characters from being backed into a corner later on), but heard from your mother is still something that to me is like 'this is a fun little story, watch me type away at my google doc and see what happens!'. like i take it seriously, i want people to enjoy it, but i want to enjoy writing it just as much.
i guess my writing is just: find what you want to read, figure out how you could write it taking into account your personal hangups, get it started, know kind of where you want to end up, and have fun figuring out the stuff in between (and leave some breadcrumbs in the middle there so if you end up way off base and you're already putting out chapters you can write your way out of it).

100 days of writing // day 36-48!
thanks to @the-wip-project for putting this idea together. tagging @kinetic-elaboration @she-who-the-river-could-not-hold @hopskipaway and @dylanobrienisbatman.
I meant to post this last night….Wow, the days really fly by, huh? Almost halfway through this project and I have not written a single thing!! Soooo time to switch to a totally new project! Thanks to @troped-fanfic-challenge for a brand new story idea! I’ve been working on the moodboards for this event for quite some time but I hadn’t allowed myself to think about it personally…until now!
Going to use some previous questions to guide this post!
How do you start a new story?
First Brainstorm the Prompt.
I used to want to write different Movie/TV AUs constantly and now I mostly function through trope prompts! So for this particular WIP, the prompt is a visual moodboard, and it has strong Harry Potter AU vibes. I looked through my HP folder for some ideas because I really, really want to write the Bonus Character but I don’t actually have an full-fledged HP plot ideas in my t100 arsenal. My only HP ideas are all about gritty, dark modern witch hunts with hidden magic AUs or Dramione AUs. Those did lead to an idea and then the Bonus Character led to another. I slept on it and eventually my brain started to roll a plot around.
Next make a Moodboard. See below*
Then come up with a Title. I have a running list I like to pick through and it’s usually pretty easy for me to mold my new ideas into one of them.
Write a Summary.
And BAM! New Story!!! I’ve got an opening image in my head so I need to write that down sooner rather than later.
Make a new moodboard.
Just a piece of the rework I did on the TROPED: VISUAL Round 1 Moodboard. Not shown is the other character in this pairing/dynamic and the main setting! I am a very visual person so I really love creating moodboards for my fics! This HP one has the coolest vibes. Sorta Spoilers below the cut!
Tumblr media
What’s an an old idea that you've discarded?
I loved reading @kinetic-elaboration’s answer to this. And I totally AGREE!! I never completely discard an old idea. When I switched fandoms after a 7 year hiatus, I began converting any leftover WIPs to my new fandom.
A lot of ideas move places frequently on the writing counter. New ideas are quickly chopped up into moodboards, titles, and possible summaries. Prompt ideas with a deadline get seasoned with outlines and notes. Most pressing WIPs are put on the front burners to be cooked up and ones I don’t have interest in go on the back burners. Sometimes things get returned to the pantry? (Aye, a Chopped Metaphor, ftw!)
Back Burner WIPs:
Soulmate Wedding Dress AU
Sweet Home Alabama AU
Sea Mechanic Selkie AU
Chopped 1.0 Final Fic
Octavia Reincarnation fic
Pantry WIPs:
College AU - 6k
Band AU - 5k
Infidelity fic - 7k+
BBB19 fic - 4k
+ a few under 1-2k
All of my ideas are stored in a list in a Google Doc and the only ones I’ve actively discarded were vague TROPED ideas like, a Canon Spec Ring Fic and a Space Opera R+J Bellarke AU. One had a moodboard but I recently deleted it because I don’t actually want to write it any more. Most of my ideas I believe I’ll write in time and I would never want to get rid of them. Just in case. I’m waiting on that inspiration and motivation.

Bleh. I need to take mental inventory, so y’all get to enjoy if you like.
*****
Balance: A Last Hope grew another part (Thanks, Mace) unless the new interesting bit slots in somewhere else. Mindhealers (1 of 2) is done enough. Part 2 has stalled on my end – it’s doing that thing where I open the document, stare at it, and then it’s finally time to go to bed. I think it’s the fact that we’re reaching fiddly little bits and while the broad strokes are easy, it’s just (emotionally?) hard to write.
Star 2: part 1 is chugging along decently, there’s just so much going on that it sometimes feels a bit overwhelming. Maybe I need to sketch out a better outline of what I want to cover? Should probably also keep in mind that there’s a lot of balls in the air, so just...DON’T try to fight for Proper Writing Wankery. Characters are going to wander in and out of the story, focusing on “THIS is the FIRST CHAptER must hit all significant characters and NONE WHO ARE NOT but this bit is FUNNY and has to be from X character’s perspective but but but” – bleh. Just rock the silly.
It is so much easier to accept this with it being a ‘new fic’ instead of chapter 21 of who the fuck even knows. Amazing how that lowers the mental hurdles.
Amnesia!Vader: I keep reading the file name as Amnesiá rather than Amnesia6, which keeps messing with my head. ::grumbles:: This one’s going pretty well, it’s just hard to keep up momentum when it’s farcical action but painful, tragic content. This story is always the weirdest balancing act. This one’s chugging along, just gonna take time.
Nightsisters: siiiigh. This is the one I keep looking at and then flailing. Clearly something is off since I haven’t even managed to find TYPOS to putz with lately, this one’s stalled hard. I think some of it is the plotting – I suspect I need to pull the not-really-a-fight-scene and simply roll without it. It’s just too much. At the same time, a part of me STILL protests that things are insufficient without it, but....meh. I don’t think the overall plot is a problem, I’ve just gotten too fixated on our original plans. Maybe should chew that over with Mati at some point. Note to self, make sure the google doc is up to date.
Sith!Verse: Iiii haven’t touched this one in ages. >_< I love the verse, but it’s not my wheelhouse, and so I sorta vaguely flail along behind Dogmatix and if there’s even an outline for the chapter I don’t know where I stashed it.
Blackest Circle: I need to buckle down and at least outline the next chapter (...I’m...pretty sure we don’t have more than vague notes of what it’s supposed to cover?). We have such a bad habit of starting to squee over this and then in the same conversation getting distracted by other shiny.
Corellian “Jedi”: this keeps stalling ‘cause we never pinned things down beyond “hey wouldn’t it be funny if?” and that’s been the whole damn fic from day one. Not teeeechnically on the docket, but might as well list it.
Concordance: ...Yeaaaaah, I ought to...figure out where that’s going, since I got [singular plot element] and that’s it. Well, no, there’s also [character shenanigans] I know I HAVE to do.
Reconciliation: Need to post that, and then find a way to wrap it. Technically I probably planned for it to be 2 more parts, but if I’m not in the mood for smut, then I could probably finish it in one?
Wake of the Force: ….ok, fine. I’m intimidated by the next part. It builds up to the pivotal scene, THE scene that started things, and meanwhile there’s more emotional CONFLICT and yikes. I think I want to be not tired to write this one, but whatever’s going on means I’m always tired.
Supplemental 17: uuuurugh, I don’t wanna write angst! And we’re hitting the angst point! *SULK* I’ve let that one sit for awhile, though, so maybe if I poke it with a stick something more will fall out. Not a bad place to start with, I guess.
*****
Sigh. So, in short, still always fucking tired, and braining is hard.

get to know the author
I was tagged by @yaoyoroses :D thank you En!
Tag | @l1nkp1t, @astersandstuffs, @eccentrick-stardust, @amajikies, & @hajiiwa (if any of you would like to!)
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean? i wanted a Haikyuu!! themed username since i fell deep so here we are :3 in terms of my ao3 username, Miah_Kat, it’s a mashup of my nickname & a name for an old OC; i use some variation of it as a default whenever i make a new account somewhere bc i’m bad at thinking up usernames on the spot. ^^”
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/subscriptions/hits/kudos). what if i told you...? is at the top with 734 hits & 133 kudos (!!!!! holy crow) on tumblr, Cafuné is the most popular with 46 notes :”D
3. What is your AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it? it’s of megane Oikawa! ^^ i chose it because he’s one of my favorite characters & he looks damn good in glasses
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters? @l1nkp1t, @wallynorthbynorthwest, @ninja-spacenerd, & @littleop always leave me wonderful comments/tags that never fail to brighten my day!! ❤❤❤❤
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again? hmmm i can’t think of one off the top of my head but y’all should def check out my bookmarks & fic rec tag for some awesome works!!
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked? i’m subscribed to 46 users, 20 series, & 127 works. I’ve bookmarked 257.
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most? i don’t stray far from canon-compliant stuff but i find myself writing a lot of getting together, first kisses, or domestic fluff kind of stuff. If I’m going to go full-AU though I lean towards fantasy.
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page) i have 8 user subscribers, 17 unspecified subscriptions, & 111 bookmarks total ^^
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are afraid of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!) mmm well i think every writer has some general fears of being judged, regardless of what’s written. for me, maybe smut since i just don’t write it often (& i’ve only ever posted one fic that has it)
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc. writing in general?? lol idk i’d like to be more...dedicated, i guess? i can’t seem to finish anything without it taking months. i also have a hard time with details, so i’d like to find a good middle-ground with that. oh, and world-building when writing fantasy (it’s just so much work aslkdjfk)
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often? i write popular ships more often but i’m absolutely open to writing rarepairs! i know it can be disheartening to really love a ship but not be able to find much content for it, so i don’t mind getting rarepair requests. i like making people happy if i can :)
12. How many stories have you posted on AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)? 33 on ao3
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program? 18 WIPs in Google Docs & probably...10+ in my laptop files?
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head? oh, definitely write them down! i can keep them in my head for a little while but there’s a 95% chance of not remembering them after something distracts me lol
15. Have you ever co-authored a story? kind of? back in high-school my best friend & i used to write stories together. it was all for fun though, nothing that ever made it to a site. i think it would be fun to do a collab with someone though! :D
16. How did you discover AO3? i think a post from tumblr linked me to it & i’d seen a lot of people talking about it, so i gave it a shot.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on AO3? HAH no way lmao  😂😂😂
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers? not really. i just think everyone who reads my stuff are wonderful, lovely people ^^
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write? i’ve read basically my whole life and fanfiction led me to writing. there wasn’t a specific story or author though; just the realization that i could also put my own twist on characters/fandoms i enjoyed. i also have an amazing best friend who supported my passion when it first began, so she’s definitely a huge part of why i continued to write.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author? read. a lot. write, even when you don’t want to or think it sucks. as with any kind of art, experience and practice is the only way you’ll get better. be open to constructive-criticism but don’t let the “rules” overwhelm or suffocate your passion. most importantly: write what you like! what you want to read! have fun with it!
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go? oh jeez, it’s a mixture of both? i usually start with a scene in my head that makes me go “i wanna write that” but then i have to find a way to get to the scene? so i either wing it, if the idea was clear enough, or i scribble down an outline to get my base ideas down but leave wiggle room for inspiration during the writing process.
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do? i’m sure i have, back when i first started; i likely commented back that if it wasn’t their preference, there was no need to read the fic or leave a rude comment behind.
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)  a c t i o n, definitely. i also get kind of stuck on kisses? idk how much detail to put into them lol
24. What story(s) are you working on now? even tho i’m slow af about it i’m currently working on 2 actively:
a makoharu gift exchange fic!
a klance fic with which i’m taking my first steps into writing for VLD (i’m jumping on the bandwagon where they’re somehow physically stuck together (via alien handcuffs in mine) for a time & grow closer as a result)
i’m always sorta-kinda working on my various iwaoi fics; the nipple-piercing fic is near completion & i’ve recently remembered my single dads au that i hope to work more on soon ^^
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)? pffftt all the time. the ideas are definitely more forthcoming than the Muse & motivation like to be.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself? nope. i tried that for a while but it didn’t stick.
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started? absolutely! although i sometimes have mixed feelings about it, concentrating in creative writing definitely helped me improve in many ways.
28. What is your favorite story that you’ve written? i don’t...really...have one? ^^” i guess i am particularly fond of with a hoarse voice, under the blankets just because i feel i managed to get the atmosphere & imagery i wanted
29. What is your least favorite story that you’ve written? anything from when i first began lol
30. Where do you see yourself (as a writer) in 5 years? hopefully still improving & enjoying what i write (as well as finishing what i start aslkdjfk). i’m not aiming for publication or anything; i just want to write for fun.
31. What is the easiest thing about writing? getting the ideas!
32. What is the hardest thing about writing? to quote En: “e v e r y t h i n g”
33. Why do you write? it’s fun! i enjoy making the ideas i have in my head come to fruition on paper. i like experimenting with styles and imagery & characters. i enjoy the happy dance my heart does when i know i’ve described a scene or a character just right. i’ve made a lot of amazing friends through writing & i love knowing something i’ve created might bring a smile to someone. ❤
