#But Teru doesn't really

I realized I made some notes on how different characters fight in mob psycho, and I never posted them. here you guys go, for any reference needs
Mob: mostly simple attacks, not very showy, just waves his hand and uses telekinesis/exorcizes something, doesn’t move around much. As ???%, much more destructive, psychic force seems to just emanate off of him and destroy everything
Teru: VERY mobile, throws himself around with telekinesis, puts his whole body into the attacks and tends to use moves from normal fights (punches, slaps, kicks, etc). Utilizes a variety of psychic techniques with flexibility, very creative. Piss stance, necktie sword. Much more flashy than Mob
Ritsu: uses powers to throw people/things around. While Mob and Teru attack with just psychic blasts, Ritsu tends to use his powers to grab other things as an attack (grabbing the delinquents and throwing them against each other, throwing the Claw guards against the wall, picking up cars to sandwich Shimazaki between them). Uses his environment creatively (fire extinguisher smoke screen against Shimazaki). More flashy than Mob, but not as mobile as Teru. Hand gestures for Drama
Shou: sneaky + speed + bomb!! Tries to be as evasive as possible using invisibility/speed (probably telekinetically enhanced?) to hit from behind, using either telekinetic force (his stomp in his introduction, the shockwave hit on ???%) or his charge bomb attack. Potentially uses speed/evasive moves as defense instead of the barriers we see most everyone else use
Serizawa: likes to channel his powers into an object (umbrella, business cards). Uses that object as a shield, sword, or something to blast psychic powers out of. Not very mobile in season two, moves around much more in the yokai fight. Not particularly flashy, but looks cool regardless
Reigen: deception/surprise!!! Either tricks people into thinking he’s going to do something else and then attacking, or just outright taking them by surprise and attacking before they know what’s going on. Usually doesn’t have a follow-up move, just does the one attack and hopes for the best. Prefers to bluff his way through a situation

i think it’s really interesting how ritsu is just as big of a conman as reigen is. like, reigen is a financial conman and ritsu isn’t, but they both put on masks and they both hide who they really are. reigen tricks everyone into thinking he’s psychic and that he’s this charismatic, has his life together, happy guy and he fools a lot of people. and ritsu tricks everyone into thinking that he’s the perfect loving brother and student, that he’s got everything together, that he’s just the kindest most normal middle schooler. and it works. and i find it interesting how it... it doesn’t really seem to work on each other? like, ritsu sees right through reigen even with “proof” that he may really be psychic. he knows it’s all a lie. and i honestly feel like reigen can see through ritsu’s whole facade and knows that he’s hiding who he really is. and in a way, they both resent each other for it. ritsu doesn’t want to turn out like reigen, but he’s scared and is so used to suppressing everything about himself that he doesn’t know how to be himself. and reigen sees ritsu and sees bits and pieces of himself when he was younger and sometimes that makes it hard for him to be around ritsu. and sometimes he just wants to throttle ritsu and tell him to stop and not to do what he did, but he Knows that won’t be enough to convince ritsu and he’s also scared.
they’re both just two conmen fooling everyone around them because they’re cowards and are scared that they aren’t lovable unless they are their mask

current state of mitsukou is really interesting to me because kou is currently. really deeply in love, cares about mitsuba more than anything else and is traumatized enough that he's not going to get over this ever, while mitsuba is going through the normal stages of a crush. at the same time, kou is unaware of the nature and magnitude of his feelings because he's too stressed, while mitsuba does know that kou loves him

something I enjoy to see is Akane naming them, so simple but he probably would have gotten annoyed using full titles to address them, so he figured out a solution that makes everything easier for himself
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also for some reason enjoy seeing him use she/her for Mirai and he/him for Kako because most supernaturals are an "it" (not it/it's pronouns but yk because they're not human) but Mirai and Kako are named and gendered idk it's just silly

EPISODE FOUR BABYYYY
A delinquent gang from Salt Middle School (Mob’s school!) trespass on the territory of Black Vinegar Middle School and beat up Black Vinegar’s gang. The leader of the Black Vinegar gang goes, “Quick! Call the shadow leader! SOMEBODY GET TERU!”
We don’t see how, but Teru destroys the Salt Middle School gang, along with their vaunted leader, “Tenga the Demon”. Teru is... a problem.
Tumblr media
Look at this arrogant... fop of a kid! He gives his stunned gang a haughty lecture (while also texting his girlfriend) on how important it is to make a point so that fools bow down to you. Then he gives a bit of an internal monologue about how he’s going to use powers and people to take advantage of everything he can... because he’s the main character of this world.
Yeah. Keep thinking that, buddy.

while combing through mob psycho to find clips for my amv i am making, i noticed a small difference in the way ritsu and mob remember what happened after the highschool bullies attacked them.
when we see mobs flashback, the story is a bit scattered, flashing through mostly static moments loosely pieced together from his hazy memory. the high schooler's faces are hard to make out. the color palette is very washed out, with the core colors being white and desaturated blues, with the red being the most vibrant color, because the key part of his memory is the blood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: Mob Psycho 100 screencaps showing flashbacks to Mob and Ritsu's childhood accident. The first four are Mob's POV, and they're colored in a glowy blue and white, with Ritsu's blood the darkest and only other spot of color in the scene. We see Mob trying to stop Ritsu from yelling at older kids, Ritsu lying on the ground with a pool of blood seeping from under his head, and Mob looking lost with blood on his cheek. End ID]
in contrast, ritsu has a very clear telling of what happened. the moments are not as static, he remembers what color shirts they were wearing that day, he knows what caused mob to black out, for ???% to wake. the color palette is much more saturated.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[ID: The next four are Ritsu's POV, and they're slightly hazy but in full color. We see Ritsu and Mob struggling while the older kids grapple them, followed by Mob hitting his head against a wall. Ritsu shouts with distress, and black energy and red light suddenly flares up from behind where the bully shoved Mob into the wall. End ID]
i think the contrast is very interesting, especially since both retelling of events happen in the same episode (season 1 episode 5 i believe, where teru is trying to fight mob). one of them has an extremely poor memory, mob can really only infer what happened, he even asks ritsu what he did when he was knocked unconscious. and while ritsu claims that he doesn't remember much of it, his mind is basically plagued from this memory, as much as he would probably like to forget. he thinks about this any time mob is faced with stress. i don't think this was a very groundbreaking discovery, i just love moments like this where i can see how hard people worked on this show and the amount of detail they put in,... they could have very easily just repeated the same flashbacks from mob and add some more contextual shots from ritsus perspective but they chose to make that distinction.... so awesome.

The Reigen Arataka Deranged NormalMan Review
Do you ever think about how Reigen has like. A really strange belief in The System and How Things Should Be. Like REALLY strange. Whatever he's got going on is so much weirder than "scammer with a heart of gold".
I think it all comes together if you read the 10th Season 3 omake like, seriously interrogate this:
Tumblr media
This is normal, if comedically thoughtful and realistic for a shounen character. This guy talks like a mandatory reporter. What's strange is what immediately follows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"AS A SPIRITUAL SPECIALIST" DOING A LOT OF HEAVY LIFTING HERE REIGEN
Not only did he hunt down the families of the children bullying his client (insane. where did he get that info), he also contacted the school as if he were representing his own son in order to get justice, and then hunted down a source of complaints when the school fell through.
This is like a genuinely bizarre level of commitment to the bit, and the bit is "the system works, and if it doesn't work, we will find a system that does work, and if we cannot, hell or high water it is my PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to make the system stop slouching so it works again".
Long thread on the manga with this reading⬇️
Before I start. Reigen adopting Teru is more IC than you think but I don't think it is IC in the way people think it is. I think about this a lot and I think people who do it because they like Reigen aren't understanding how into his bit he is. Guy who talks to social services
So remember the arc that won people over to Reigen despite the fact he's an asshole who takes advantage of Mob and derides him constantly in order to keep him complacent?
Tumblr media
He has Mob's phone on his GPS. This makes sense; he's been taking him out and about since he was 11. Very responsible!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reigen dismisses the "Boss" mistake thinking well, it's a misunderstanding, but it got me in. Yet as soon as he heard they're committing crimes, he VISIBLY puts on his Boss Pants to chastise them. Again, normal so far. I think any scammer with a heart of gold would do this. (And foreshadowing for why he retried reprimanding the Claw Cadres a second time after getting power.)
Tumblr media
Again. He's a scumbag. So he leaves Mob to beat their asses using his previous rhetoric. But then!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reigen's shady morality is more like "people who can take care of things should take care of things". To him, Mob is the Authority on Espers, and can handle conflict like this. Immediately upon becoming aware he can't, Reigen thinks "oh, okay, so the only person who can take care of things is someone who can deescalate". (Pictured: Deescalation)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay. Besides the fact this is insufferable as a general concept - YOU just told him to handle it YOU are the source of his stress - his first step in deescalation is to force Mob to back down. Rather than asking him not to fight, he reestablishes "rules" in order to convince Mob he must back down - the same way he tried using what he said to worm his way out of dealing with this shit - and then sets himself up as the authority figure to which the others must obviously defer in matters of His Boy, like a parent accepting criticism at a PTA meeting. This isn't Reigen claiming Mob so much as "in order for them to not attack Mob, they must view me as a representative for Mob".
And like a good authority figure:
Tumblr media
Continuing with his phrasing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you think about it, this is like...an objectively very strange and incredibly bold approach to this situation. They're homicidal. Reigen is a DERANGED level of Normal Man. He has this image in his head of normalcy, of the world at standard operating procedures, and reinforces it right through an entire conflict. Carceral beliefs don't even factor into this, simply expressing his principles and expecting them to fold.
And they do lol. I keep wondering how Shou must have felt listening to him talk like that
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We see a little more of his good side in work; when he was getting so little work it was affecting his grocery bills, this moneygrubbing scammer still asked for like $200 to clear an entire city of hauntings. (His regular exorcisms are around $30). Fair prices are part of his principles of how the business should be. He operates basically at-cost. He mentions he wanted to come out here because he's bored. He's killing time as a career.
Aside:
Tumblr media
Just realized he called Mob in last minute so Mob didn't know he accepted crops instead of money. Shigeo didn't like that
Tumblr media
So consider that he never got caught here and there was a call on the news to hunt him down at the end of this bit: for the average viewer of the anime, it's just funny, but this is part of the Mogami pre-arc so we've gotten a hold of him by now; he probably holds an inherent belief that the police will intercept him and not Mob. Why wouldn't they? Why would an adult man want to dress up in a highschool girl's uniform? The System will understand.
Tumblr media
Not relevant to my point but I like how he realizes what's wrong with Mob way before the final arc, just not why it's happening. Also he doesn't say anything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the way his principles are, you really get the feeling that Reigen does his best to avoid culpability specifically because if something happened that was his fault, he'd have to step up to the plate to compensate for that, which is troublesome to him who is a career time-killer. It does not occur to him that an actual bad person and scammer would not step up to the plate as a matter of course. This is his way
Tumblr media
What I find really interesting is that this Militant Insane NormalMan does have a sense of wanting something "special", but rather than whip Mob up the way Dimple did Ritsu, he ended up projecting his own values onto Mob, as if he could recreate a special "self" within him. He's always deriding him and baiting him and lying to him in hopes of creating a superb person that a special individual like Mob finds admirable, as if Mob is the authority on his quality of character. Sad! lol
Tumblr media
Anyway, it adds a lot more kick to this famous line. Reigen genuinely believes in Authority
Tumblr media
Authority works!
Tumblr media
And if Mob (the authority on espers) doesn't work, who's the person who MUST step up to the plate [common sense]? You guessed it.
There are other aspects of Reigen's character that everyone and their dog has already picked up on (his self-loathing is the entire reason the way he talked to Mob in Confession arc hit so hard), but this one's my favourite. He's insane

okay so hear me out: one of ritsu’s tics is scratching. just like... imagining him scratching himself subconsciously all the time and he can’t stop even when he realizes it because it’s a compulsion. he tends to scratch his hands and knuckles and wrists a lot and it just gets worse the more stressed or anxious or overwhelmed he gets. and sometimes he doesn’t even realize it’s happening until someone points it out or mentions that he’s bleeding.
and thinking about that being a tic he’s not great at suppressing so he does his best to hide it from his family (he doesn’t care about that one at school as much because he could easily lie his way out of that one) so they don’t realize it’s a problem until one day when ritsu walks into spirits and such with blood caking and dripping from his hands (maybe during final exams or he’s in the midst of an anxiety/tic attack or maybe he’s just really overwhelmed with everything on his plate) and. y eah.
#it's about ritsu being willing to show people he's hurt and to let them take care of him because he's so used to making himself the perfect#little brother/son so no one would have to worry about him / so he wouldn't stress shige out and just. yEAH#i have. feelings.#i just think it'd be a big problem#i think one way the s&s gang would help with that is by holding his hands#like maybe shige would take his hands and just. hold them while reigen or serizawa or someone bandages them and he doesn't let go for awhile#and then teru and shou start grabbing his hands and holding them if he's scratching too (and either of these can be romantic or platonic)#and i feel like he wouldn't be totally comfortable with tome doing that yet but he would be eventually and he doesn't want the adults to do#it because it makes him feel like a child so they don't but. ough. and maybe one day he's freaked because he's worried that he'll scratch#whoever is holding his hand instead and like someone (maybe reigen👀) suggests trying to redirect that into tapping instead so he taps#everyone's hands and he feels so uncomfortable and awkward at first especially when the tapping gets - in his words - excessive and his#premonitory urge is like 'yes RUB rub their hands!!!' and he's so upset but no one minds and maybe tome and the adults will give ritsu their#hands and just let him tap and rub and poke their hands and stuff because ritsu is SUPER picky about touch and allows very few people to#touch him partially because of the ts and partially because he is Insecure and Textures and Comfortability and just. this is so important#for him??? and such a BIG step and shige is so proud and the scratching doesn't really stop but it gets manageable and not as bloody#it's about ritsu learning who he is and learning to love all the parts of himself even the ones he finds repulsive ough aNYWAYS#mp100#ritsu kageyama#ritsu with tourette's#i am so right for this wow

Some skating au ideas (well costume ideas because i love costumes)
this post has inspired me a long time ago and i took Reigen's janky style from there and emotional skating for Mob to deal with his feelings. Then together with my friend we had fun developing some thoughts, they are below!
Reigen is a self-taught skater who developed a unique style with zero elegance but with constant blasts of energy (really sweaty). Mob is gradually opening up thanks to this freedom, accepting his own emotions and learning how to express their beauty in a performance, gaining confidence.
Teru and Mob meet just before one competition, probably practicing. Asshole Teru starts showing off, then tries to scare his opponent away (he usually does that to make sure his "rival" completely loses heart before competition even starts). Teru gets carried away which leads to a haircut with a skate blade..
Ritsu was envying his brother's skills for a long time and secretly practicing a lot on small rinks in malls. I'm not sure how to put Ekubo in the story, but either with his help or just by letting his negative emotions out, Ritsu finally finds his own strength and pace.
I see Tome being non-esper translating to her just not performing. She skates a lot for fun and enjoys herself. Shou also doesn't usually care about competitions, but decides to perform with Ritsu (and his gang?) to prove his dad wrong, i guess. They meet on the mall rink and find out later to perfectly balance each other out!
Yes, this is a penguin they give kids on ice rinks. I see Serizawa being actually a good skater, but always afraid to lose balance and fail only in front of people. also this looks just funny to me (and please consider rockhopper penguin's eyebrows)

okay I've finished making my big spreadsheet of how mp100 characters refer to each other! some thoughts on this under the cut because it got long
the Kageyama brothers are very polite in how they refer to people. their parents must have really instilled etiquette into them bc no one else is as consistent about using polite honorifics/titles as they are. the only people Mob doesn't give an honorific/title are his brother and Dimple, and the only people Ritsu doesn't give an honorific are Dimple and Shou, who he just calls "Suzuki"
Reigen, on the other hand, is pretty inconsistent and casual with his use of honorifics. he says "Mob-kun" a couple times and "Ritsu-kun" once, but usually they're just Mob and Ritsu (or "Mob's brother" lmao). the only honorific he consistently uses is "Tome-chan"
it's infrequent, but both Reigen and Dimple refer to Mob as "my boy" at some point :') he's their boy!
Ritsu doesn't refer to the Awakening Lab kids at all until he asks their names after being kidnapped lmao the only exception is when he calls out to the older Shiratori brother after the younger one is taken away and he calls him "Shiratori-kun." considering the fact that after asking their names, he refers to both of them as Daichi-kun and Kaito-kun, I think there was absolutely a moment when everyone was freaking out about the Shiratori brothers where he was like "ohhhhh that's his name"
also he switches from "Onigawara-san" to "Onigawara-senpai" when he realizes he's friends with his brother lmao fakeass
even though Mob starts calling Teru "Hanazawa-kun" as soon as they exchange names, Teru doesn't give him the honorific until they decide to raid Claw together. I guess that's the point when he decides they're friendly enough for it? he calls Ritsu "brother-kun" as soon as he realizes they're related and never refers to him by his actual name
everyone calls Teru some variation on his nickname EXCEPT Mob and Dimple. Dimple actually only calls him "brat" and "that guy" for a while until he managed to track him down again during the alleyway incident, which I realized is because he was exorcised before learning Teru's name lskdjflkdsf from the Seventh Division arc onwards, he just calls him "Hanazawa"
I love that Dimple tries to refer to the brothers with cutesy nicknames and both of them are like "if you do that again I'm killing you all the way dead" and he's like "understood." and then refers to them by given name from then on lmao
Teru refers to Dimple as "Dimple-kun" and Tome calls him "Dimple-chan," both of which are SO funny to me because he's way older than them. rude as hell, this evil spirit deserves no respect
Shou doesn't use honorifics or titles for ANYONE. Ritsu is just Ritsu, the Ultimate 5 are all their last names, his dad is just Pops. he also exclusively refers to Mob as "Ritsu's brother" dkfjldskfj
Serizawa alternates between "Shigeo-kun" and "Kageyama-kun" with no real rhyme or reason to it. just seems to depend on his mood I guess
