MMWR Booster #17: Notes from the Field: Burkholderia pseudomallei Detected in a Raccoon Carcass Linked to a Multi-state Aromatherapy-Associated Melioidosis Outbreak — Texas, 2022
Top 5 Takeaways
Burkholderia pseudomallei, the bacterium causing melioidosis, was detected in a raccoon carcass in Texas, linked to a multistate melioidosis outbreak from an imported aromatherapy spray.
The raccoon, exposed to the contaminated spray, developed acute neurologic symptoms and died, leading to concerns about environmental contamination by the pathogen.
Extensive environmental testing at the burial site revealed no evidence of B. pseudomallei in the soil or surrounding area, despite the raccoon testing positive for the bacterium.
This incident marks the first reported presumed melioidosis case in a raccoon and the first animal case linked to this particular outbreak.
The investigation highlights the importance of environmental assessments to prevent potential establishment of B. pseudomallei in non-endemic areas.

Why did you choose Burkholderia? Which disease/member of the genus inspired it?
a long, long time ago I did some research in the Cystic Fibrosis realm and thought Burkholderia (cepacia) was a neat bacteria (not to be infected with though). Here we are!

Giant Mesquite Bug (Thasus neocalifornicus)
The giant mesquite bug inhabits the Sonoran desert from southwestern Arizona to northern Mexico, also found in New Mexico and Texas. It is a leaf-footed bug of the true bug order. As their name suggests, these insects live and feed primarily on mesquite trees, on which they remain throughout their life cycle. Large clusters of these bugs feed on the soft tissues of the tree, such as new leaves, seed pods and young stems. Nymphs are brightly-coloured in red, white and black, while the adults' palette is more subdued.
The giant mesquite's first line of defense is the employment of noxious chemicals, especially among nymphs, which deter potential predators from eating them. The chemical's composition changes as the insect ages; nymphs produce various hexenals, while adults produce hexanal, hexanol and hexyl acetate. 4-oxo-(E)-2-hexenal, produced by immature giant mesquite bugs, is a cytotoxin and mutagen which works primarily as an insecticide. It can kill insects much bigger than the juvenile, such as mantises and tarantulas! It is suggested that the symbiotic bacteria Wolbachia are necessary to the production of this cytotoxin, but the exact mechanism is still unknown.
On the topic of helpful bacteria, the symbiotic bacterium Burkholderia is of large importance to the digestive health of the giant mesquite bug, contributing to nymphs' survival. This bacteria is absent in the eggs and some young nymphs, suggesting that it is acquired sometime after hatching!

What’s the grossest thing you’ve seen in regards to microbiology
ooooooooooooo nice i love this question. im gonna put this under cut incase like, anyone is eating their tea or something lol
so i was ('was' bc i'm not currently working there full time as i started grad school in september) always the person in the lab people take the grossTM stuff to bc nothing really phases me?
so i've cut up peoples necrotic fingers before to put onto agar plates, like used a bone saw to cut peoples femurs or whatever to make bone chip broths. the thing i think maybe made me the most like, 'okay no thanks' was the time i had to like, spread someones eyeball jelly onto an agar plate after i cut it open.
if youre talking about like which bacteria i think is the grossest then.......idk maybe like strep pyogenes bc it can give you necrotising fasciitis (basically flesh eating bacteria) or maybe burkholderia pseudomallei bc it gives you melioidosis and its also scary bc it just like...lives inside you dormant for years. also if we are going classic the smell of proteus sp. is gross.

Giant phage holds promise as treatment for lung infections
Researchers have discovered a new bacterial killer that can target common lung infection caused by Burkholderia bacteria that has exciting potential for biotechnological applications. The Burkholderia cepacia complex is a group of bacteria that can cause lung infections, which can be fatal for those with serious lung diseases, particularly Cystic Fibrosis. Infections caused by Burkholderia…

Burkholderia cepacia has rarely been reported in Antananarivo. We present a case of a 49-year-old male with chronic kidney disease, hemodialysis-dependent, who was admitted to the hospital because of dyspnoea, deterioration of the general state and fever. His past medical history includes chronic kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes and chronic global heart failure. Burkholderia cepacia was identified in blood culture. The Immuno-compromised state of the patient, the antimicrobial resistance of Burkholderia cepacia and the delay of positivity of blood cultures are discussed. 米酵菌酸 Bongkrekic Acid

The inevitable fall.
(TW self harm, illness) This weekend has been a much needed spar break after an utterly horrible two weeks. I am so excited for Monday when I get to find out if I have liver failure and have to come off Kaftrio, while also finding out if after my month off Kaftrio where my lung function dropped 20% if I need to go into hospital for IV's for the first time in 4 years. If this is Burkholderia kicking in as well, then, well I am well and truly fucked.
I am sure I deserve it, but I haven't been this shit and low since 2017, even weed can't get my mind off it, I cannot drink for obvious reasons and I am on here blasting music to distract myself because all I can think about is cutting myself. I've managed to go 3 years without doing it, even had a tattoo to cover my inner scars but I don't why once it gets into my head it's so pervasive becoming all I can think about. I'm even rationalising it with, we're in a cold spell so I can keep my arms covered for a while.
I also don't think my Elliot Smith/Death cab/Smashing Pumpkins marathon is helping.
