Not as much because I tend to prefer to toss the genderqueer experience at WWX, but I do have some lovely queer LWJ fic recs, be that as a trans, gender swap or just something undefinable.

Wei Wuxian doesn’t know how they got here sometimes.

Okay, like, yes, she knows how they got here (this village, this town, this forest, this city), and she knows how they got here (riding on a horrible donkey she’s decided she can’t bear to part with, Lan Zhan walking beside her leading said donkey by the reins, because of course Wei Wuxian’s donkey likes Lan Zhan more than her. She can’t blame Lil’ Apple! She also likes Lan Zhan more than she likes herself!), but it’s how she got here in the larger metaphysical sense that she doesn’t understand. There were thirteen years where she wasn’t here, after all, and very many places in the past year where she could have ended up not here again, but somehow she’s here, and—miracle of miracles—so is Lan Zhan.

Really, it’s the Lan Zhan part that she still struggles to understand.

My comments: Delicious case fic. Wwx is a post-doc who studies talismans (since the Jiangs refused to let him have Cultivator lessons with his 'sibs', this is as close to magic as he can get). The Twin Jades blow in, and wwx falls instantly and hard. But the case is really horrific, and the minds behind it are utterly sick, very clever and very creative, so he's intrigued as well as repulsed.

@bromeliaddreams I hope you don’t mind, but your post about the LOLOMG and string craft inspired me so I wrote a thing with Hamid learning how to knit and making scarves for all his friends! Set while Hamid and Azu are in quarantine.

Hamid had been too furious at being kept in a cell for a week of quarantine that he’d almost forgotten about things he could be doing to keep himself busy, until he saw Zolf take out a set of knitting needles and yarn from his watch across the way.

Despite the despair he felt at having Zolf serve as his jailor, he immediately darted over to his bag and began rummaging.

“I knitted you something,” Hamid called, quietly, so as to not wake Azu. She was having trouble sleeping. They both were.

“I thought you didn’t know how to knit,” Zolf replied quizzically and set down his tools. “You knew how to sew, but not knit.”

“I picked it up along the way. Somewhere in Cairo, I think. There was… a lot going on and… well, you always seemed to calm down while you were knitting – at least when you weren’t cursing at a stitch. So, I thought… maybe it would help me calm down too.”

“Did it?”

Hamid shrugged. “Not sure. But I made a bunch of scarves. Some for myself, assuming I ever see another cold, London winter, and then some for my friends.”

Grizzop didn’t get it, when Hamid had handed him a scarf, a sort of peace offering for their confrontation about justice. It was hot in Cairo, and a wool scarf seemed like a joke. After Hamid explained and tensions settled down, Grizzop wound up wrapping the scarf around his quiver, a sort of heraldry for the LOLOMG to go along with his symbols of Artemis.

Meanwhile, Sasha seemed more excited at the gift. Not that she wore it as a scarf in the baking heat, and she didn’t seem to have any intentions of ever wearing it as such. Instead, Hamid found her using it to hold together the alchemical ingredients she made into bombs. She’d nodded to him and wrapped it all up before tucking it into an inside pocket of her jacket, glinting daggers lining the way.

Finding pink wool for Azu’s scarf had been tricky, but Hamid pulled it off. It’s not as if there was any other color he could possibly use for her. Azu had grinned when Hamid presented it to her and eagerly wrapped it around her neck, standing proudly to show it off. It fit her aesthetic perfectly. When the sandstorms had been particularly vicious, she pulled it up over her nose and mouth to block out the particulates, but now, snoring quietly in their cell, she had the scarf tucked under her head to boost up the pillow meant for a smaller creature.

He’d knitted scarves for his siblings as well, even Saleh and Aziza. He’d left Saleh’s with Saira, to be given to him if he was ever allowed out of custody, and he’d draped Aziza’s over her grave before they headed on to Damascus. Saira had hers wrapped around her waist the last time Hamid saw her, an impromptu belt, while the twins used theirs as weapons against each other, with prestidigitation spells sparking in the air around them during their brawl. He couldn’t stop from wondering if they still had them.

And in the time that remained, Hamid found himself instinctually knitting one for Zolf. Even if he wasn’t there, he was Hamid’s friend, part of this hodgepodge family trying to save the world. He pulled a scarf of blues and greens, reminiscent of the sea, from his bag, and held it out through the bars for Zolf.

“I suppose the ocean colors aren’t the best, anymore,” Hamid muttered, referencing Zolf’s break with the Church of Poseidon. “But they made me think of you.”

Zolf took it, hastily stopping himself from brushing Hamid’s hand as he accepted the gift, and then darted back to his chair across the way.

“I love it,” Zolf admitted quietly, then he laughed. “Though I’m not sure how useful a scarf is. I’ve basically got one built in.” He gestured to his beard, and Hamid couldn’t help but chuckle too.

“Well, I haven’t mastered socks yet, so you’ll have to wait on those,” Hamid teased.

In response, Zolf pulled up a pant leg just enough to show off a garish combination of knitted colors wrapping around his mechanical calf. “The metal gets cold. And I remember how much you love my color theory.”

Trying to be quiet was forgotten as Hamid laughed, a true belly laugh, for the first time in ages, and Zolf beamed back at him, still running his fingers along the scarf. There were so many things that needed to be said, stories to be told, facts to be discussed, but in that moment, the stitches and movement of yarn served well enough to quiet the questions.

Zolf tucked the scarf around his neck and under his beard, then pulled another set of knitting needles and a skein of hideous orange yarn from his bag and pushed them through the bars to Hamid.

“I don’t suppose you have any better colors?” Hamid asked, smirking.

“Not a chance.”

They sat in amicable silence, knitting away the hours of quarantine, until Hamid and Azu were released and the three of them headed on their way. Against the rain and the cold of the countryside, all three of them pulled up their scarves to protect themselves from the elements, warmth spreading throughout, against whatever might come.

January recs

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m starting with The Untamed again since that’s the bulk of the stories this month, but there’s more miscellaneous fandoms under the cut. Enjoy!

THE UNTAMED

watch the slow door by Lirelyn - AU where Lan Wangji shows up a little too late at Dafan Mountain to hear the song and thus doesn’t recognize Wei Wuxian right away. Short and sweet, but some devastating ‘pining for supposedly dead person who is secretly right next to you’ action before the reveal.

a micro utopia born as the overture plays by tardigradeschool - canon AU in which Meng Yao and Lan Xichen get engaged during the war, and thus he is invested in solving the problem of Wei Wuxian so that the Lan brothers will stop being sad about it. I am weak for ‘Meng Yao uses his powers for good and fixes things’ AUs, but this one does a particularly great job with the XiYao relationship as well - their love is one of knowing as well as trust.

Moonlight as My Guide by BromeliadDreams - fantastic modern AU casefile where Wei Ying is a talisman researcher who Lan Zhan consults about a set of disturbing murders.

Just Say Yes by edenwolfie - long and satisfyingly original AU where Lan Qiren is a better teacher, recognizes Wei Wuxian is bored as hell in his classes, and shoves him into advanced studies with Lan Wangji, causing a lot of things to change. The series consists of several stories covering the events of the war and aftermath - there’s just one story left, but since the main plot is wrapped I’m gonna go ahead and rec it now.

To pluck the misunderstanding before it grows. by kaminikaku - quiet but lovely little story about Sizhui starting his musical studies, and Lan Zhan talking him through a problem.

every breath that comes before by tardigradeschool - canon AU where the wine that Jin Zixun tries to make the Lans drink is poisoned, and the banquet and Qiongqi prison camp events go very differently.

vintage youth by sami - this early nineties/modern AU where Lan Zhan happens upon long-presumed-dead Wei Wuxian while he's a fugitive from the police is absurd and dramatic and SO MUCH FUN, I love it. The later stories in the series are more celebrity-and-baby oriented fluff, which is all well and good, but not as delightful as Lan Zhan laser-focused on evading a police search without any shame or qualm whatsoever while Wei Ying is stuck in confused lust (with light trauma) mode.

dreaming and getting a glimmer by verseau - modern AU where Wei Ying belatedly figures out he’s very gay in college thanks to a number of things happening all at once. Implausible three-way identity porn and implausibly hot actual porn. Mind the tags.

OTHER

(Temeraire) Good Neighbors by ChronicBookworm - delightfully gossipy look at Tharkay & Co post-canon from the perspective of his neighbors.

(Temeraire) Rowan Tree by peevee - in which Tharkay goes out in a winter storm to rescue an injured neighbor. A little bit of competent action, a little bit of feels, and just nicely atmospheric.

(Queen’s Thief) The Path is There. Follow it. by ama - brilliant AU where Kamet refuses to let Costis travel to Roa with him, and they are both much more involved in the war. The romance, the different perspective on the events of RotT, and the use of mythology are all spectacular.

(BNHA) Conventional Taste by WowBoring - smart and sweet pre-slashy story about Todoroki attending a hero convention with Midoriya. Unlike a lot of similar stories, the author has clearly attended a lot of conventions before and does a great job with Midoriya (who is truly deeply passionately nerdy about heroes and the business and not just a fanboy, and would 100% take intense notes during panels) and the hero industry and the boys’ own burgeoning hero status, plus a light but thoughtful touch dealing with Todoroki’s abusive father.

(Cherry Magic) Touched by @drownjngindreams - gorgeously simple vid, for all of your hand porn and UST needs.

(DCU/Batfam) Panic Room by envysparkler - intense h/c piece where Damien locks Jason and Tim into a panic room that they can’t escape for several hours, and they’re pretty fucked up about it.

(DCU/Batfam) Into the Brighter Night by shoalsea - *heartclutch* Look, I just love Tim Drake SO MUCH, and this story (written from the POV of other members of the Batfamily) really captures him in all of his loyal self-sacrificing chameleon workaholic genius-dumbass teenager ways, featuring the Bats and his wonderful weirdo network of friends from various teams and past adventures.

He keeps writing about them together until he feels there is no chance for them. Then he writes only about WWX night hunting and being happy. He stops after WWX death. In the end post canon WWX finds all these stories hidden in Jingshi and reads them. They were stashed under floor boards behind wine. I think LWJ burned one story because it turned out to steamy, and one he was so embarrassed about that he put it at the bottom of the stack.
