An illustration by Paul Gavarni to accompany Albert Smith's essay "The Casino" in Gavarni in London (1849).
[Albert] Smith titled the essay that accompanied Gavarni’s image simply “The Casino,” but his text refers to Laurent’s Casino, and the periodical press of the period shows that Laurent’s was a specific, popular venue situated just off the Strand to the east of Trafalgar Square in central London. [...]
It is a gent that Gavarni depicts enjoying a sherry-cobbler at Laurent’s Casino. In his accompanying essay, Smith records that gents were the “overwhelming class” frequenting the casino; elsewhere he observed that “Gentism” was at “a rampant pitch” there. The man’s slightly long, curled hair, his ring, the large buttons on his double-breasted sac coat, and his short cane and cigar are the gent’s signature accessories in the late 1840s, and would have been immediately recognizable. Descriptions of this urban type had been widely disseminated in the literary and visual culture of the day.
— Jo Briggs, “Gavarni at the Casino: Reflections of Class and Gender in the Visual Culture of 1848″ July 2011, Victorian Studies 53(4):639-64. (Google Drive link)
Compare Gavarni's handsome and elegant Gent to a more typical specimen in a John Leech cartoon from 1847:
Tumblr media
Or an illustration in Albert Smith's The Natural History of the Gent (1847):
Tumblr media
The wide paletot coat, the very narrow hat brim, the cigar, and the comically large tie pins connected by a chain are all signatures of a "Gent."
Writing about class and visual culture in 1840s Britain, Jo Briggs observes:
Despite the mocking attitude of Smith and others who depicted the gent in textual or visual form, their humor defused the tensions surrounding this upstart figure. [...] The widespread discussion of the gent must therefore be understood as part of a broader preoccupation with the classification of novel and parvenu urban types in visual and literary culture at this time. But this preoccupation stemmed from the fact that, by reproducing the styles and mannerisms of the middle and upper classes, the gent drew attention to the performative aspects of class.
Gents formed a specific subsection of the urban lower-middle classes: young men, without dependents, in skilled jobs that paid well enough to leave a little spare cash for small luxuries, cheap ready-made clothes, and low-brow entertainments. Their jobs were not physically demanding and they worked shorter hours than many. In the evenings they were free to act out a fantasy of a life of leisure, showing off their loud clothes while trying to appear indifferent and aloof.

Today we have door 18 and here we have an East Indiaman. A fragile beauty hiding in Salem- The Friendship of Salem
Tumblr media
Friendship of Salem
More about her:
The original Friendship, a two-decked, three-masted, square-rigged, 342-ton vessel was built from 1796-1797. The ship was constructed in the Stage Point yard of Salem shipbuilder Enos Briggs across the South River from today's Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Friendship was launched on 28 May 1797 and registered at the Salem Custom House to merchants Aaron Waite (1742-1830) and Jerathmiel Peirce (1747-1827).
Friendship was an “East Indiaman,” the type of merchant ship that was used in the East Indies trade in the years after the American Revolution. Friendship made 15 voyages to countries including China, Indonesia, India, Venezuela, Spain, and Russia. The cargo brought back to Salem consisted of pepper, silk, sugar, coffee, ale, sherry, tin, salt, cheese, candles, and other goods and merchandise.
On 5 September 1812, Friendship was returning from Archangel, Russia, when the ship was captured by the British sloop of war HMS Rosamond. The War of 1812 between the British and the United States began while Friendship was in Archangel, Russia. The war had started in June, but the captain and crew were unaware of that fact and set off for Salem, only to be captured in the Atlantic Ocean and taken as a prize of war. The captain and crew were able to return to Salem, but Friendship was sold at auction in London, England on 17 March 1813.
The replica tall ship, is docked at Derby Wharf and was designed to present the appearance an original 1797 Salem-built vessel. The keel was laid in Scarano Shipyard in Albany, New York in 1996 and uses modern technology and materials to meet today’s safety and accessibility requirements.
She represents New England’s influential role in the development of global and domestic maritime trade and in the economic and political development of the United States.

i went to ben barnes sept 22 london concert and here's some highlights:
sang his ep, some unreleased songs, "jealous guy" by john lennon, "river" by bishop briggs, and "you got a friend in me"
for "you got a friend in me" he brought his dad out to play guitar. his mom was also in the audience.
anna popplewell, freddy carter, and jessie mei li came out to support him and were just chilling in the audience ( though unfortunately i didn't realize this until after ).
this man is a dork who showed us the "lumos" trick to get your phone to light up. bonus, beforehand he asked us if we liked harry potter and the way you could feel the audience get excited but also nervous cause we know he knows he's fancast sirius black lol.
while talking between songs he mentioned he'd sing more than just his own songs, someone in the audience asked why, and he said "cause i've only got 5 songs and you're here for two hours" 😂
was very sweet talking about his original music and how he wanted to create positive messages about love and loving yourself and appreciating life's moments
seemed so grateful and looked like he was tearing up at a few moments
was incredibly sweet with his bandmates. he mentioned everyone by name multiple times and gave them time to solo perform. he thanked them all at least once. kevin burke opened for the concert and talked about having publicly come out as bi earlier that week and said that ben had known for awhile and supported him. we love a bi king and an ally!
ben was just so genuine!! like not only incredibly talented but he seemed so sweet and down to earth and thrilled to be there.
HE SAW ME! he -saw- me! i know he saw me because i was relatively close to the stage ( few "rows" back ) and when he was closing and singing across the stage, i lifted up my hands in a heart symbol, and like a minute later when he finished the song he made a heart symbol at the audience and i was the -only- one who had done that so i -know- he saw me do it and then did it to the audience. 💗

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Doctor Who - "The Giggle."
SUMMARY
Doctor Who's final 60th anniversary special sets up a potential spinoff show featuring UNIT on Disney+.
The new UNIT team in "The Giggle" showcases a strong camaraderie and dynamic, laying the groundwork for future appearances and a possible spinoff.
The introduction of the Vlinx, a new robot working for UNIT, hints at potential backstory and teases a potential UNIT show on Disney+.
Doctor Who's final 60th anniversary special, "The Giggle" has set up the rumored UNIT spinoff show on Disney+ in multiple ways. Now installed in a flashy new skyscraper in central London, UNIT recall the Fourteenth Doctor (David Tennant) to help them stop the world from going mad. Although the main draw of "The Giggle" is the battle between the Doctor and the Toymaker (Neil Patrick Harris), there's a sense that it's setting up a future UNIT spinoff. Doctor Who spinoffs on Disney+ have been heavily rumored since the co-production deal was announced. The new Whoniverse title also implies that Doctor Who will have its own expansive fictional universe.
Doctor Who's rumored UNIT spinoff would be led by Jemma Redgrave's Kate Stewart, the daughter of Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (Nicholas Courtney). Following on from the reveal in "The Power of the Doctor" that UNIT hires former Doctor Who companions as freelancers, it's expected that some classic series actors will reprise their roles. "The Giggle" outlines the structure of the new UNIT, which gives the sense of Doctor Who's final 60th anniversary special being a backdoor pilot for a new spinoff.
8 UNIT's Brand New Headquarters
It looks a lot like the Avengers Tower.
Tumblr media
Doctor Who's UNIT have never had the best of luck with their HQs in the modern series. Their New York HQ and the Valiant were devastated by the Daleks in "The Stolen Earth", their presidential plane was blown up by Zygons in "The Zygon Invasion", and their brand-new building was blown up by Tegan Jovanka (Jane Fielding) in "The Power of the Doctor." The biggest surprise of "The Giggle" is that the UNIT skyscraper largely remains standing after their confrontation with the Toymaker. Giving UNIT a permanent base of operations does feel like a way to establish the Doctor Who spinoff show's primary location.
7 The Dynamic Between The New UNIT Team
Doctor Who's new UNIT work brilliantly together.
Tumblr media
In the 1970s, Doctor Who had the UNIT family, so-called because of the warm relationships between the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee), his companions and the UNIT team. There's a sense of this camaraderie in "The Giggle", with Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madeley) quickly forgiving Kate for her ableist abuse while under the influence of the Toymaker. This is clearly a team that trusts each other implicitly, much like the UNIT team of old. A strong central team structure is a strong foundation for their future appearances in Doctor Who, but it also guarantees good grounding for a spinoff show.
6 The Vlinx
What's going on with UNIT's new robot?
Tumblr media
The Vlinx (Nicholas Briggs) feels like the most obvious bit of set up for Doctor Who's UNIT spinoff. There must be many stories to tell about how the Vlinx came to Earth and began working for UNIT. They appear to be a robotic version of James Bond's Q, providing UNIT with gadgets and technology to meet alien threats. The Vlinx invented the Zeedex that shielded UNIT from the effects of "The Giggle", and would presumably fulfill a similar purpose in future appearances. Doctor Who's new robot also draws comparisons with Mr. Smith (Alexander Armstrong) from Russell T Davies' previous spinoff show, The Sarah Jane Adventures, further teasing a potential UNIT show.
5 The Galvanic Beam
UNIT is sufficiently tooled up to fight alien threats.
Tumblr media
The galvanic beam that triggered Doctor Who's first bi-generation is more evidence of the substantial tools that UNIT have at their disposal. Way back in David Tennant's first-ever episode, "The Christmas Invasion", the Torchwood Institute had a similarly powerful weapon trained on the Sycorax spaceship. The reveals about Torchwood recurred throughout David Tennant's first Doctor Who season, culminating in their introduction in the season 2 finale and the eventual John Barrowman-led spinoff. It's possible that the galvanic beam is a subtle callback, with future UNIT episodes in Ncuti Gatwa's era eventually paving the way for a full series order for a UNIT spinoff on Disney+.
4 UNIT Offers Donna A Job
Could Catherine Tate come back in a spinoff show?
Tumblr media
Donna brilliantly figures out that the brain signal resembles a tune, eventually inspiring the Doctor to recognize that it's the giggle of Stooky Bill stored in broadcast signals. The super temp from Chiswick impresses Kate Stewart so much that she offers Donna a job with a generous pay package and benefits. Donna doesn't explicitly accept the job on-screen, but the money will give her cash-strapped family the chance to relax more. Interestingly, Yasmin Finney is said to return for Ncuti Gatwa's first season of Doctor Who, perhaps interning for UNIT. If Donna's daughter is still in the new era of Doctor Who, then it's easy enough for her to pop up in a UNIT spinoff in a special guest role.
3 Doctor Who's Mel Now Works For UNIT
The 1980s companion will be back next season, too.
Tumblr media
Kate Stewart fulfilled her promise to the Doctor Who companion support group by hiring Mel as a computer expert for UNIT. If Russell T Davies is repeating some of his past glories, he could do a lot worse than put Bonnie Langford front and center in her own show. That's what he did with Elisabeth Sladen and The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2006, so it would make a lot of sense to do the same with Langford. While Mel was a divisive Doctor Who companion, Bonnie Langford is an excellent actress with a big public profile thanks to her West End and Broadway experience. There could be nobody better to lead the UNIT spinoff alongside Jemma Redgrave.
2 UNIT Are Hiring Former Doctor Who Companions
It's not just Donna and Mel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While executive producing The Sarah Jane Adventures, Russell T Davies brought back both the Brigadier and Jo Grant (Katy Manning). He also planned to bring back Sophie Aldred as Ace, had Elisabeth Sladen not sadly passed away before filming on season 5 completed. RTD clearly doesn't want to crowd the new show with old faces, and that's the right decision as Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor Who is being billed as a fresh start. However, with Mel, Tegan, Ace, and potentially Donna Noble on the payroll, there's a real possibility that other classic Doctor Who companions will be brought into a UNIT spinoff show to provide their own unique expertise.
1 UNIT Has An Earthbound Doctor Again
David Tennant's 14th Doctor remains on Earth.
Tumblr media
50 years after the Third Doctor's exile to Earth ended, the Fourteenth Doctor's is just beginning. While this is a self-imposed exile designed to give the Doctor time to rest, reflect, and enjoy a normal life, UNIT will be reassured to know they've got him on speed dial. Russell T Davies making the decision to keep around David Tennant after Doctor Who feels like a calculated move to bring back the Fourteenth Doctor when the story demands it. Having the retired Fourteenth Doctor occasionally feature as an advisory figure in the new UNIT spinoff could provide an interesting new spin on Doctor Who tropes that wouldn't undermine his heartwarming happy ending.

Damien Andrew Evans (My OC/MC from the Like Moths to a Flame series)
*I modeled his character off of a young Garrett Hedlund. Here are some photos of Garrett (one with his hair down long - LMtaF Damien - and one with his hair short - BB Damien):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wrote this in a frenzy last night (referencing my already copious notes from the past… hmm… eleven months??? WHAT), so I apologize if it reads like word-vomit (LMAO). BUT, without further ado, here is my Damien info-dump. Damien is my OC from my series, Like Moths to a Flame, which I started on Wattpad in March 2023. Check it out if you are so inclined (AO3 link because AO3 is better…please don’t hate me, Wattpad police haha).
General Info:
Born and raised in London
Lives in a huge estate in Mayfair
Father’s family comes from old money
Birthday: 13th December 1874
Mother: Mary REDACTED Evans (yes, redacted because it’s a spoiler for Burning Bright)
Died shortly after Damien turned two
Father: Andrew Robert Evans
Magistrate in London
Workaholic, doesn’t interact much with his son, leaves him to his own devices the majority of the time (he is very lucky Damien is a good boy; the shenanigans Damien could have gotten up to if he was so inclined…lmao)
Half-blood (only found this out after he came to Hogwarts; his mother never shared this information with his father)
Only child
Personality:
ENFP (apparently) (thanks Myers-Briggs test!) Fueled by interaction with others (being an only child and spending most of his time alone during the summer holidays deeply damaged him)
Attracted to the same sex (and has known this for as long as he can remember)
Alas, he is super self-conscious about his sexual orientation, having grown up in Muggle London, where being gay is a crime. He is also quite secretive because of it; he wants to open up more to people (it’s in his nature) but is hesitant until he feels he can trust them fully. This can take a while.
Nearly everything he does, he always has this nagging thought in the back of his mind (it follows him literally everywhere): Would my mother be proud of me? (He has never told anyone this; it also haunts him immensely)
Highly intuitive
Very forgiving (arguably to a fault) of anyone he grows to love and trust
Feels very deeply, but, again, he tries his best to hide it. Something must be terribly wrong or extremely upsetting for him to cry in a public setting.
Not very organized (also has a problem with tardiness), EXCEPT when he is at home. He doesn’t want to make a mess for the servants, so he is extremely meticulous and clean when he’s home for the summer. Any other time, he couldn’t care less (LMAO). Physical Description:
Very unique brown eyes with golden flecks in them (Seb is absolutely obsessed)
Taller than average (a little taller than Sebastian, much to Sebastian’s chagrin)
Long blonde hair (just past his shoulders) that he keeps tied back in a low bun (his preferred style)
Sebastian would much rather he wear it down and loose (he is quite vocal about this), but he eventually is like fine…you do you, fam
In Burning Bright, Damien has to cut his hair short so his father isn’t suspicious. He has a cute little tuft at the top of his head that sometimes cascades across his face, which Sebastian is enamored with
(Eton, the all-boys boarding school Damien attended before Hogwarts, has strict uniform and hygiene protocols and would never permit him to wear his hair long; Damien’s father thinks he is still attending Eton so he must keep up appearances)
Lithe but muscular, a testament to how active he is when he arrives at Hogwarts. His go-to when he’s not in classes is to ride his broom around the Scottish Highlands and complete Merlin Trials. He is obsessed with finding and completing them all. (What a Ravenclaw…)
Ample arse though (LMAO) which Sebastian loves… (Seb is an arse-man; you’re welcome HAHAHAHA)
Tan from being outdoors most of the time
Sharp jawline, broad neck and chest, prominent collarbone (he is quite thin), very angular features
Light spoiler for stories post-Burning Bright: Older Damien is a bit heavier in adulthood (and Seb loves this development)
Magic Reveal:
Damien never had one of those “oh shit what just happened???” magical moments, so when Fig showed up on his doorstep with his Hogwarts letter at the very beginning of the summer in 1890, Damien thought it was a joke. When Fig did some magic for him to convince him, Damien lost his goddamn mind. He was thrilled, but also terrified. Fig told him not to worry, that he could stay with him over the summer to prepare Damien for the school year.
Damien’s father was (unsurprisingly) not home when Fig arrived. Damien also asked Fig not to say anything to his father. Fig sensed there was some tension between Damien and his father and agreed (for the time being). Eventually, once Fig got to know Damien better, he decided Damien was right and it was for the best that his father didn’t know about his magic. This was the moment when Damien realized he could fully trust Fig. Surrogate father/son bond activated <3
Their backstory (if Damien’s father asked) for why Damien was gone over the summer was that he was traveling with a friend from Eton. Damien’s father was hella neglectful and didn’t even bother to ask, which to be fair, made things super easy for Damien and Fig (LMAO).
Likes:
The color green
Flying (he loves how freeing it is and the feeling of the wind in his hair)
DADA is his favorite class (his early dueling wins probably played a factor; poor Damien didn’t have a lot of wins in his life prior to coming to Hogwarts, well…besides being rich AF LOL)
CATS (dude adores cats to the EXTREME; he would love to adopt all of the ones he finds wandering around Hogwarts and Hogsmeade; I even have a headcanon that very early on in his time at Hogwarts he smuggles a cat into his room - a room which he shares with Amit, Everett, and Andrew, mind you. Unfortunately, Amit is allergic, so that plan goes to hell in a handbasket rather quickly.)
Magic (obviiiiiii); he still can’t believe his luck that he’s at Hogwarts
The Wizarding World and how accepting it is of all forms of love. He cannot believe his lucky stars that he can be openly affectionate with Sebastian. It even takes him a while to realize this because no one straight up told him and Sebastian at first wants to keep their relationship on the down low since he’s still trying to figure out if Damien feels as strongly about Sebastian as Sebastian feels about Damien. Silly boys #idiotsinlove
Dislikes:
Herbology (he SUCKS at it; Sebastian and Damien have this in common, but Damien is much, much worse. He never uses magical plants in his duels because he is bitter about how bad he is at growing them and doesn’t want to spend money buying them at the Magic Neep hahaha)
Close-minded people (which is why he is understandably upset and confused by Sebastian’s very vocal hatred of goblins; it nearly ends any potential of a relationship from that point forward, but Seb does eventually apologize more than once *PHEW*)
Dark Mongrels, and to a certain extent dogs (le sigh) (light spoiler for Burning Bright so I won’t go into detail about it)
Interactions with Other Characters:
Fig -
Fig was the father Damien always wanted. Supportive, understanding, a wealth of knowledge. Losing him was absolutely devastating; it nearly broke Damien.
Natty -
Besides Sebastian, Damien’s second kindred spirit. When Sebastian and Damien aren’t on good terms for a large swathe of Like Moths to a Flame, they are joined at the hip. Sebastian even worries that they might be a couple at one point and is very jelly. (C’mon Seb, read the freaking room!)
Poppy -
Damien likes Poppy but is a bit intimidated by her. He still really enjoys her company, just in moderation. Ominis -
Damien willfully ignored him before they officially met. He didn’t realize it at the time, but eventually comes to the conclusion that he was jealous that Ominis was best friends with Sebastian. Notably, he easily sensed that Ominis wasn’t into Sebastian romantically, so that was a relief at the very least. Damien was super annoyed by Ominis after the encounter post-Undercroft. He couldn’t understand how someone could lose their temper so easily. Eventually, they do bond… hilariously, it’s Ominis that makes the effort to get to know Damien better. (Of course Ominis knows that Seb and Damien are snogging; he’s ~scary~ perceptive; at first Ominis is just vetting Damien in a protective “I need to make sure you’re a good person for my best friend” kind of way, but then he eventually realizes he enjoys being in Damien’s company. Likewise Damien to Ominis. They eventually also bond over classic music (Ominis lets Damien borrow his gramophone every so often and they sometimes even listen to it together.)
Amit, Everett, and Andrew -
Damien’s roomies! He likes Amit and Everett a lot, but definitely has more in common with Everett since they are both obsessed with flying. Damien even buys Everett a broom so he can stop using a school one. Damien finds Amit a bit awkward, but in an endearing way. He would beat someone up for realsies though if he ever overheard anyone make fun of him.
Andrew and Damien don’t really care about each other either way. Andrew hangs out in different crowds. They don’t talk much.
And yes, I realize that Duncan Hobhouse is also in Ravenclaw, but I've decided he has his own room. Damien finds him annoying, even though Everett is friends with him for some reason lmao.
Sebastian - HOOOO BOY HERE WE GO Damien fell for Sebastian HARD almost immediately after meeting him (their dialogue after the match in DADA was such a turn-on hahaha). He really struggled to play it cool that entire exchange though. He does succeed (sigh), but later… um… goes back to his room and yeah, in my headcanon he furiously does what you would expect lmao.
Sebastian immediately found Damien intriguing BUT he was not sure why. He had always appreciated the beauty of both genders, but he had only ever been with a girl so it never even crossed his mind that he could be romantically interested in Damien. He didn’t realize until <BIG SPOILER FOR LIKE MOTHS TO A FLAME> Damien asked Seb to kiss him in the Undercroft. Once their lips touched, Sebastian had one of those *connect the dots <Charlie from It’s Always Sunny at the blackboard scribbling nonsense> moments* and is like… OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. And then he just rolled with it. Doesn’t question it at all he’s so confident in what happened. Damien is immediately his. MINE MINE MINE seagulls from Finding Nemo gif.
<BIG SPOILER OVER>
Unfortunately, Dark Magic was a HUGE cockblock (*sad face*) and their budding relationship combusted to the extreme. Damien was devastated but would NEVER admit it so he lost himself in his other friendships (thank you for being there Natty, you QUEEN). As we all know, Sebastian sucks at expressing himself (LMAO say it louder for those in the back), so he avoided Damien like the plague and stewed in his anger. But he is confused and upset and just a turmoil of emotions and it plagues him. A proverbial storm cloud follows him everywhere he goes.
And then all hell breaks loose with the relic (DAMN YOU RELIC), BUT Damien and his strong intuition senses something is up and realizes that Seb is not himself. He activates stealth mode and becomes Seb’s shadow without Seb realizing, following him around and making sure he is okay. After the catacomb ~incident~, Damien won’t let him out of his sight and refuses to permit him to head back to the castle alone. In fact, it scares him so much that once they make it back to the castle, Damien has an OH SHIT I LOVE HIM BUT HE JUST MURDERED SOMEONE moment and he is so lost in his thoughts that Sebastian runs off. This haunts Damien immensely because he is so worried that Sebastian is going to hurt himself. And then, of course, he gets all caught up in the repository / goblin invasion stuff that he is distracted, but he still follows Sebastian around when he can. #sneakyDamien
And I’m not going to go into further detail because massive spoilers for the end of Like Moths to a Flame hahahaha.
***
So, that’s my Damien. He is my ~goodest~ boy. And he has definitely stolen my heart. <3

Deep dives into folklore: Werewolves
Tumblr media
Werewolves, often depicted as humans with the ability to transform into wolves or wolf-like creatures during the full moon, have been a recurring theme in literature and mythology for centuries. The concept of the werewolf has evolved significantly over time, reflecting the changing beliefs, fears, and societal norms of different cultures. Today we are exploring the fascinating journey of the werewolf from its ancient origins to its modern-day interpretations in literature and popular culture.
The origins of the werewolf myth can be traced back to the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. In Greek mythology, the legend of Lycaon tells the story of a king who was transformed into a wolf as punishment for serving human flesh to the gods. This early representation of lycanthropy, the ability to shape-shift into a wolf, laid the groundwork for future werewolf tales. In Roman literature, the story of Ovid's "Metamorphoses" also features a man named Arcas transformed into a bear by the god Jupiter, an early example of shape-shifting.
During the Middle Ages, the werewolf myth gained prominence in European folklore. In a time when superstitions and fear of the unknown were rampant, the idea of humans transforming into vicious beasts under the influence of the moon became deeply ingrained in the collective psyche. The term "werewolf" itself is of Old English origin, derived from "wer" meaning man and "wulf" meaning wolf. This era saw the emergence of numerous werewolf legends and stories, often used to explain mysterious disappearances or brutal killings. One of the most famous cases was that of Peter Stumpp, a 16th-century German farmer who claimed to have made a pact with the devil and confessed to committing gruesome murders while in wolf form. Such tales served to stoke the fear of the supernatural and the unknown.
As Europe transitioned from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and Enlightenment periods, the werewolf myth underwent a transformation of its own. The Age of Reason prompted a shift towards skepticism and rationality, and werewolf stories became less prominent. However, they did not disappear entirely. Some writers and scholars explored the psychological aspects of lycanthropy, viewing it as a metaphor for the duality of human nature. This concept laid the groundwork for the exploration of the werewolf's inner struggle in later literature.
The 19th century saw a revival of interest in the supernatural, and werewolves made a comeback in literature. Folklorists and writers like The Brothers Grimm and E.T.A. Hoffmann delved into the darker aspects of folklore, resurrecting old werewolf legends and incorporating them into their stories. One of the most famous literary works featuring a werewolf is "The Wolfman" by Marie de Villeneuve, which introduced elements of tragic transformation and a curse, themes that would continue to be explored in later literature.
In the 20th century, the werewolf evolved into a complex and multifaceted character. With the advent of cinema and the horror genre, werewolves became popular subjects for films like "The Wolf Man" (1941) and "An American Werewolf in London" (1981). These films portrayed the werewolf as a tortured and sympathetic figure, struggling with their monstrous nature.
In contemporary literature and popular culture, the werewolf has continued to evolve. Authors like Anne Rice and Patricia Briggs have explored the psychological and emotional aspects of lycanthropy in their novels, portraying werewolves as individuals with unique abilities and challenges. The popular "Twilight" series by Stephenie Meyer introduced a new generation to the idea of werewolves as members of a close-knit pack, bound by loyalty and a shared destiny.
The werewolf, a creature born of ancient mythology, has undergone a remarkable evolution in literature and popular culture. From its origins in Greek and Roman mythology to its prominent place in medieval European folklore, and its subsequent reimagining in the modern era, the werewolf has adapted to reflect the changing fears, beliefs, and values of society. Today, the werewolf remains a symbol of the eternal struggle between the human and the beast within, a reflection of our ongoing fascination with the supernatural and the mysteries of the human psyche. Its enduring presence in literature and mythology ensures that the legend of the werewolf will continue to evolve and captivate audiences for generations to come.

Trash overflowed from bins on the streets of Edinburgh on Tuesday as a strike by council workers hit the city during its internationally renowned arts festival.
Tens of thousands of performers and tourists have poured into Scotland's capital for the festival, which runs through most of August.
But many have spoken at their revulsion at the stench as bins overflowed around the city[...]
"I'm from London and we've seen some quite bad protests and bad riots but this is up there," street performer James Tofalli, who was picking up litter outside Waverley train station, told AFP.
"I've not performed today. Not performed yesterday and for a few days because it's not a nice place to play."
Jenna Rank, an Australian tourist, said she had been excited to show "beautiful Edinburgh" to her partner, with the festival running in full for the first time since 2019 before coronavirus struck.
But she said she was left deeply disappointed after encountering an overpowering stench. [...]
"It was quite breath-taking and not just the smell. For some people it's their first time. It's a shame to leave that kind of impression."
Ian Tomlinson, who was born in Edinburgh, said he had never seen the city this bad, as fears grew about a surge in the population of rats and other pests.
"This is embarrassing. I am actually embarrassed to walk around the city at the moment and see so much junk," he said.
Cleaning staff working for Edinburgh City Council went on a 12-day strike last Thursday after rejecting a 3.0 percent pay offer which it called "derisory" in the current economic climate.
UK inflation is currently at 40-year highs of 10.1 percent on the back of soaring energy costs, and is predicted to hit 13 percent or even higher next year.[...] Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the strike action came while Edinburgh was at the "centre of the cultural world" and rejected claims of a lack of government funding for local councils.
Local residents have been asked to keep their rubbish inside rather than put it on the street. Waste and recycling centres are also shut.
Miles Briggs, a local government spokesman for the opposition Scottish Conservatives, said the rubbish piling up on our streets risked damaging the city's reputation.
"These annual festivals are supposed to be a source of pride, not humiliation," he said.
lol get fucked pay the binman better. Any pay rise less than inflation is a pay cut

“After biker Reggie (Colin Campbell) and his hair-hopper girlfriend, Dot (Rita Tushingham), tie the knot, they head to a holiday camp for their honeymoon where things go sour in a flash. Yearning to escape the drudgery of his new married life, Reggie becomes fast friends with Pete (Dudley Sutton), a quick-talking fellow leather boy with whom he takes trips to the seaside, much to the chagrin of Dot, who struggles to make their house a home. When Reggie’s grandfather passes away unexpectedly, he asks Pete to join his grandmother (Gladys Henson) as a boarder and live-in companion in her spare room, where he also crashes after he and Dot have a row. Cohabitating with his new roommate, it soon becomes clear that Pete and Reggie have feelings for each other that go beyond mere friendship - feelings that neither of them may be willing or able to process.”
/ From Rocco T Thompson’s review of The Leather Boys for Slant website, 2021 /
Released on this day sixty years ago (8 March 1964): director Sidney J Furie’s gritty working-class British kitchen sink realist drama (and homoerotic biker classic) The Leather Boys (1964). (Tagline: “Three lives ripped savagely apart!”). Some scenes were filmed at London’s old-school transport café The Ace Café in Wembley; when I used to occasionally go to rockabilly gigs there years ago, it looked exactly the same. For the “leather jacket lover” crowd, Colin Campbell and Dudley Sutton resemble escapees from Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising (1963) in their biker gear – and the great Rita Tushingham absolutely slays as the petulant Dot! Coronation Street fans will recognize a young Johnny Briggs (aka Mike Baldwin) in the supporting cast.

Odaraia alata, (yet another) strange arthropod of the Burgess Shale.
Unlike many of the 'weird wonders' of the Burgess like Hallucigenia or Opabinia, Odaraia was quickly identified as an arthropod (although its precise position remains unclear) but what sets it apart is its completely unique functional morphology: in addition to a very unusual telson with three flukes (quite reminiscent of the tail of a plane), Odaraia had a bivalved carapace that almost completely enclosed its body (Briggs & Whittington, 1981), like a living burrito with many legs.
Since the legs were unable to reach out beyond the shield, Odaraia must have spent its life swimming (possibly on its back like a fairy shrimp, based on its center of gravity), using its legs to create currents to guide food particles into the shield space and towards the mouth; the tail flukes likely assisted in stabilizing and steering. The whole animal was about 15 cm long (Briggs & Whittington, 1981).
In the background are Pirania muricata sponges, contemporary to Odaraia and also found in the Burgess Shale (Walcott, 1924).
References and notes about the reconstruction:
The cephalic appendages of Odaraia are poorly known; this reconstruction is based on the interpretation of Briggs & Whittington (1981), which consists of a pair of denticulated, mandible-like structures and, anterior to it, two possible pairs of simple segmented appendages - but the latter are highly uncertain and should be taken with caution.
