Sober Curious? Here's an Invitation and a Recipe for You
Maybe you haven't hit rock bottom and you aren't sure if you want to stop drinking forever. Maybe you're the only one who knows that drinking, for you, is becoming more of a nightly need than a nightly want. Come join us for Arid August and try on a ...
Sober-curious has recently become a phrase that sparks debate. When I was drinking, and for the first couple of years that I was alcohol-free, I loved a good debate. I thrived on arguing the pros and cons of a situation. I was determined to fight for right and I got a powerful rush out of defending the truth … The truth … The only truth in the sober-curious debate that matters to me now is that…

#1 thing i'm most afraid abt in the revival is the candace characterization actually bc we are in a paradox here
fact: candace's endless torment was part of the backbone of the show, one of the constants that kept the plot structure going. phineas and ferb must always do something new. candace and doofenshmirtz must always lose. any exceptions to these rules can't be permanent. status quo must be upheld.
fact: candace against the universe's character development seemed to finally be breaking this cycle. candace isn't alone anymore, she's letting go of her obsession to see the support that was always there for her and thus she's escaped her sisyphean cycle. to go back to the old status quo after this would be massively unsatisfying.
fact: the reboot is supposed to take place AFTER candace against the universe.
so what do we do now

Succumbing to the insanity again…
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Still absolutely insane by this devastating line delivery, it’s just the perfect mix of defeated and apologetic. He wants to accept Crowley’s offer so badly, he always did, but even still the panopticon of Heaven and Hell looms near. They’re both aware of this wish to be closer, and Aziraphale’s just too tired to hide it. Because even after achieving the impossible and saving the world from a 6,000 year plan to destroy it, he still doesn’t feel safe enough to simply stay a night at Crowley’s house.
In fact the whole scene reflects this. There’s no score save for the few tentative notes when Crowley invites Aziraphale over, and it bears a somber, almost melancholy demeanor. Not at all what you’d expect from two people who just stopped Armageddon against all odds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that’s really why this ending feels familiar but not redundant, it’s telling in the best way. This is the second time, (the first being the band stand scene), where the show makes it explicitly clear that they love the Earth because they’ve come to love each other.

Guys, it just occurred to me that they were on the wrong sides of each other for the kiss.
Crowley was on the left, and he's almost ALWAYS on the right. Aziraphale is on the right, and he is almost ALWAYS on the left.
All I'm saying is, if the s3 kiss happens with them switched back, I'm never shutting up about it.

Thinking more about something Lisa said in the documentary, about Wille realizing he can’t both be a Prince and be with Simon:
So August never really became like a complete good guy. We got some more of his backstory to explain him, and I think he definitely grew as a person. But in episode 5 we see Vincent do that microagression against the other student (when they’re talking about the seniors superlatives) and August doesn’t stop it or call it out. August hasn’t become like a great guy, just a better guy than he used to be. He fixed some problems with Hillerska by changing the hazing ritual, but he isn’t suddenly fighting for social equality or whatever. Like he didn’t get rid of the hazing just adapted it. And that’s how it’s supposed to be. August doesn’t need to be a great person to be a great Prince. Because the Royal family’s job isn’t to be leaders or rally for change, their job is to uphold tradition.
Wille’s journey was never about learning to become a better Crown Prince and revolutionize the monarchy or upend the system. His journey was to realize that he could only grow and become who he wants to be by leaving the system entirely.

It is not like they do not consistently have chocolate week during the hottest times of the summer. The heat has always been an issue during chocolate week. So it’s not like it’s a surprise. You are telling me after over a DECADE, they haven’t modified the tent to make it bearable?!! You have not put in measures for the BAKERS OWN COMFORT?!
It is at this point that it is jeopardizing their health!
Put in fans, put in air conditioning, give the bakers WATER, allow them to REST. Modify the challenges to account for this temperature inside the tent.
PUT THE BAKERS SAFETY FIRST.
I should not be seeing bright red bakers and bakers on the verge of fainting!
Bake Off HAS THE FUNDS!
Take some of the money off of Paul and Prue’s paychecks and MODIFY THE FUCKING TENT.
Because I betchu that in the hottest days of the year, Paul and Prue are not feeling that heat one iota. They are in their trailers or inside a building and cool as a fucking cucumber.
Don’t deprive the bakers of that same accommodation.
To do otherwise after thirteen fucking years is perpetual, intentional negligence.

Regarding the bsd Cannibalism arc stage play, because seeing all the different takes and opinions and interpretations made me want to put my thoughts down (and because I finally found some more concrete info on what happened in the stage play, yay)
Tumblr media
First of all, I'm on the side that says Chuuya leading the PM as it is now and following Mori's style would be bad for him. Mori operates with a level of detachment that would be quite bad, or near impossible for Chuuya.
But that doesn't mean Chuuya can't lead a criminal organization at all, and it doesn't mean that there isn't buildup for it.
The cannibalism arc stage play, to adapt the events to the cast and various other necessities, had to change the script. While at it, they doubled down on Chuuya's character arc. Nothing so far says that Asagiri contributed to this specific scenario (unlike the Dead Apple stage play), but keep in mind that the two previous productions were Fifteen and Storm Bringer. They were in full Chuuya mode. And on top of that, this one is their last bsd production!
Chuuya's arc so far has had themes of leadership woven into it. From his failing to lead the Sheep in Fifteen, to pledging his loyalty to Mori after hearing his approach on leadership afterwards, to taking a leader's position during the cannibalism arc. This theme is accompanied by the evolution of Chuuya's relationships and sense of belonging: he felt like (and was told that) he owed the Sheep for taking him in, the Flags showed him what true, mutual friendship entailed, and through many trials learned to rely on others instead of doing everything by himself, coming to view the PM, that he used to hate as it was under the Old Boss, as his family.
Since in this stage play context we would be experiencing Fifteen, SB and the cannibalism arc back-to-back, it makes sense to try to fit these themes into it. Chuuya takes over as leader in that arc, so lean into it: how does he feel? how does he take it?
So they made him express doubts. Which makes sense! His only experience was so bad it ended in betrayal, and he sees Mori as a role model! Of course he's not gonna be comfortable suddenly taking up his position!
And then, when all is said and done, apparently he downplays his capabilities to "well I'm strong, obviously people would want that in their time of need", which in terms of leadership won't get him far and he knows it from experience. So he points to Dazai still being Mori's first choice (which makes sense, Mori doesn't really do moving on), but after that, Mori produces proof that the Flags, arguably Chuuya's first real friends, trusted in his capabilities from the start, and that he never was doomed as a leader to them. Chuuya gets overwhelmed and excuses himself, keeping his head down and context implying that he is crying.
And from the initial rumours alone, this reminded me of Chuuya getting overwhelmed by the Flags in SB when they researched his past without telling him and gave him the results, when they showed him true camaraderie and support, when he met true friendship for the first time!
Tumblr media
[Chuuya] tried to look angry. He opened his mouth and attempted to yell something, but not a single thought came to mind. Everyone stared at Chuuya in puzzlement. He then swiftly turned around and shouted at the entrance: “Now I get it!” His voice was unnecessarily loud. “You thought you could pull a fast one on me, showin’ me this so I’d get all weepy and apologize! That’s what’s goin’ on, isn’t it?!” “Hmm? No, actually, we—” “Well, it ain’t gonna work on me. Got it? That won’t work on me!” Chuuya began storming toward the entrance and kept his head down. “I’m goin’ home! And ya better not follow me! I don’t wanna see any of your damn faces!”
This isn't a reaction to bad news, he is touched! It's him receiving something nice!
The stage play tried, I assume, to offer some closure since this is their last bsd production. Chuuya's arc was about friendship and leadership, so they used both of those on top of the already existing plot. Kinda like how the end of season 3 gave somewhat of a closure with the "to the stray dogs" toast; this journey isn't over, but here's a sneak peek before you have to leave.
To go back to my original point, part of Chuuya's arc is about leadership. His ties to the underworld run deep: he grew up in that environment, he chose to join the mafia, he chose to stay with the mafia, and he has made his way up the ladder with nothing but skills and respect for his boss. Could he be another Mori? Not without consequences I don't think. But could he be something else, something new? Most probably!
Is it sad that Chuuya found his place in the PM? yeah, kinda. Is it any less meaningful? No! This is a series about finding your place and doing the best you can with the cards you're dealt! It's about building the best life you can with and despite your conditions! The PM is where he found support, where he found friendship, where he learned and grew. The PM, or something similar, run by people who care is important, because otherwise we'd go back to the days of the Old Boss, with all the bloodshed and senseless violence.
Leadership is a skill that requires learning and practice, it's hard, and it's scary when you do a bad job. If you've ever had to take the reins of a project, you know it too. There are many ways to succeed in the role, it's a matter of finding the right one for both you and you group.

You ever think about how extremely traumatic the first two arcs of the Archie reboot would've been for all the characters?
They're just living their normal lives, when one day Sonic starts babbling about a completely different history where most of them were in extremely dire straits, and starts using Nicole to overwrite their extant memories with those of the previous universe.
Like, imagine being Sally in that situation. You come home from a dangerous but routine mission to find all your friends acting like you've just come back from the dead. They hand you your computer and suddenly your mind is filled with memories of a much different world to this one, a much darker and more painful one, filled with death and constant betrayal. Your last memories are now filled with weeks of watching your mechanised, vivisected body mindlessly serve your nemesis, and try to kill your friends and family. You were (probably) awake when Eggman carved you up with a blowtorch, while monologuing creepily about how smart you are, right before he crammed a cannon in where your brain should be. You almost died because Eggman designed your new form so badly that you ran out of power on your first mission as his pawn, only to be 'saved' by someone who loved you, and now doesn't exist.
But it's not just that. That would be bad enough. You also remember that this other version of you had a living mother. A mother who loved her and supported her and tried to be there for her. Yours has been dead since you were a child. You're still a child, but you've never felt less like one than you do right now. You had a brother too. He had a wife and a daughter, you had a niece and and a sister-in-law. They're gone. In fact, they're not just gone. They never existed. You have memories of people that never existed. All your friends apparently do. These other versions of them all had families. Here, they're all orphans, except for Rotor, who now remembers a world where his father wasn't an abusive bastard that serves Eggman out of some warped sense of social darwinism, something he can never have in this one.
On the other hand, your father, whom you know as a kind, generous, and reasonable man, was in this other world a controlling, emotionally abusive asshole, a major factor in a massive mental breakdown you endured and struggled with for months on end.
And then shortly afterwards, these memories begin to fade. Maybe you're okay with forgetting Mecha Sally. Maybe you're okay with forgetting that Nigel was ever Maximilian. But now you're also forgetting Alicia and Elias and Megan and Alexis, people who only existed in your memory. You won't remember how many people Eggman killed with the Super Genesis Wave. There will never be justice for them, and in a few short days, you won't even remember their names.

There is also just something about the Joker talking about breaking Bruce this issue that really annoyed me.
How many Batman runs have been about "breaking Bruce/Batman" in a row now? Hasn't this been all writers could think of since Morrison did it? We get it, Bruce will always get up again, focus on something else already. Like an actually good detective story or something. Anything! Just stop trying to break Batman. We know he's not going to break no matter how many supporting characters you are throwing under the bus to hurt him.
I have my own gripes with people who cling to nostalgia, but sometimes I think the last few years have removed Bruce from the status quo people know too much and if the current trend continues I'm not sure what the next writer could even take from him to break Bruce. He has lost Alfred, his fortune, Wayne Manor, Wayne Enterprises, one of his hands, his family (depending on what book you are reading)...even killing him would be lame because of all the recent arcs that had the people of Gotham believe Batman was dead.
Maybe just go back to basics, give Bruce a few things he lost back, try to write interesting stories about Batman fighting his rogues gallery, have Bruce be a mentor/father to the members of the batfamily and let the whole "we need to break Batman" stuff rest for a few years. Just find another goal for your Batman run that isn't "I'm going to break him". God.

among the criticism i dish out at f1 journalism, what also needs to be pointed out is the general lack of nuance in the writing; with a contained bubble of journos who get to write the 'big pieces' and have the most access, the lack of diversity amongst them dilutes, or even entirely neglects, the multifaceted dimensions and important opinions that drivers (most particularly lewis) have to offer; these journos have their favourites and allegiances; it is no secret that partisanism exists in f1 media, but it is important to highlight just how severely this undermines the integrity of 'the messenger' that a journalist is supposed to be; the perspective of the same old white dude giving me a 'first-hand experience' of what lewis said to the written press, is not one i am particularly interested in reading; i was reminded of this in relation to lewis' recent interview and the article mark hughes wrote, in which he effectively questioned lewis' authenticity and honesty; that is not to say that it was not altogether a worthwile read (it was also helpful that there were other articles written by different journalists about the interview and i could gather other perspectives and to some extent confirm a journo's veracity via comparison), but i was generally disappointed with the standard; i know these journos, i know more or less with which drivers/teams they sympathise with, and i also know the limitations they have...i am not enthralled when one of them almost disdainfully undermines lewis' integrity, tries to spin a narrative or provide an opinion on a matter on which an old white man really shouldn't have much to say on; the f1 bubble is small, very small, when you compare it to a sport like football, you can see why it is so slow with change and modernisation; when it's all in the hands of a few people in the business who have been writing for the past few decades, no wonder it is just so hard to get new, young, diverse voices in; but through even the most recent examples, change is so desperately needed

Ok I do find some of Soman's q&a very entertaining. Someone asked how would the books would change if there was a third girl with Sophie and Agatha. Soman immediate answered with, "......Sophie would have murdered her".
