Introducing Norway’s Startup Airline ‘Flyr’
New Flyr CEO Tonje Wikstrøm Frislid will face many challenges when the new airline launches in … [] Norway during 2021.
Plans to launch a new Norwegian airline seemed far-fetched when they were announced earlier this year amid the travel chaos of the coronavirus pandemic.
But now that airline has a name, a CEO and 30 full-time employees ahead of its planned launch in the first half of 2021.
Simple name, simple model
Flyr will enter the Norwegian domestic market and serve some European destinations to/from Norway. If the airline sounds like a smartphone app, that’s because an app is a core part of the strategy. All customer bookings and changes will need to be made using the app.
Founder Erik G. Braathen said the name “reflects the simplicity of the business and model and the product we will be offering the market.”
According to Braathen, the company aims to make air travel as simple as possible: “Flying is what we do best, and that is the only thing we plan to be doing.”
All bookings with Norway’s new airline Flyr will be managed via a smartphone app.
Braathen is no newcomer to the world of aviation. He led Braathens SAFE for ten years, an airline that was eventually acquired by SAS. Since then, he was involved with Norwegian in various capacities, including chairman of the board from 2004 to 2009.
A new CEO with Norwegian aviation experience
New CEO Tonje Wikstrøm Frislid will take the reins in 2021. She has more than 10 years’ experience with Norwegian Air, where she rose through the ranks to become vice president of crew management.
“We are building a company from the ground up, based on extensive experience and with a size, organisation and business model adapted to the future,” she said in a press release.
Flyr takes aim at Norwegian and Wizz Air
Until this year, Norway’s domestic air travel market was dominated by SAS and Norwegian, with Widerøe serving smaller regional airports.
How things look after the coronavirus pandemic remains to be seen, but a return of demand seems likely. Norway’s mountains and fjords mean that flying between cities is almost always the quickest option for getting around the country.
If Norwegian survives its latest crisis, Flyr will compete against four other airlines. That’s because just hours after the announcement of the new airline, Hungarian operator Wizz Air announced its move into the Norwegian domestic market.
In a recent press release, Flyr’s new CEO appears to target Norwegian. She said the management team is “building an airline which is not dependent on getting more and more planes in the air to become profitable.” Norwegian has long been criticized for its aggressive growth strategy that saddled it with huge debt and played a major factor in its recent struggles.
Flyr also promises to use Norway-based flight crew that work under Norwegian collective agreements. Wizz Air has faced criticism and calls for boycotts over its refusal to deal with trade unions and collective agreements.

Redster team’s first benchmark looks promising

The season is on and the Redster team’s first benchmark looks promising: Mikaela Shiffrin scores 20 points more than at last year’s Giant Slalom in Sölden – coming in 2nd – and she is more than happy about her strong start.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
For the two Atomic rookies Lucas Braathen (6th) and Erik Read (7th) having joined the Redster team has already paid off. And in light of his spectacular fall on the previous day, Manuel Feller’s 12th place was a small sensation as well.
“Before Sölden the athletes’ performance is like a blackbox: they don’t know where they stand until they get there,” Atomic Race Manager Christian Höflehner describes the yearly challenge regarding the start of the season. It’s a difficult Giant Slalom, right at the beginning. Those who are in front on Sölden’s Rettenbachferner glacier usually do well throughout the whole winter.
20 ON TOP: MIKAELA IS HAPPY ABOUT HER STRONG START Regarding Mikaela Shiffrin’s performance, that’s the expectation anyway. And even though Sölden is definitely not one of her favorite races, she missed the victory by only 6 hundredths of a second. Scoring 20 points more than last year she was really satisfied. Eva-Maria Brem and Ricarda Haaser, the two new additions to the Atomic women’s team, will need a bit more acclimation time until they’re ready to celebrate: place 25 and 28 were not satisfactory, given their strong performances in training. “We’re getting there, I’m sure. We’ll have lots of great moments with these two ladies,” team manager Höflehner is convinced.

NEWCOMERS TOP: LUCAS AND ERIK ARE CLOSE The Atomic team seems to be the right spot for the next-Norge youngster Lucas Braathen and Canadian Erik Read. The new Redster additions kicked off strongly: Braathen carved the fastest time in the second run into the glacier and came in 6th. Only 19 hundreths behind was Erik Read, finishing as number 7 in his first race on Atomic. He’s so happy with the support from Altenmarkt that even his father, Canadian speed legend Ken Read, and his brother Jeffrey now ski on Redster. And finally, even Manuel Feller has some reason to celebrate his 12th place: After his spectacular fall the previous day that could have had really serious consequences, he was lucky to be at the start at all.
Next stop: November 23rd and 24th in Levi (Finland) with two Slalom races.
