Was thinking again about Haladriel and the whole “I would make you a queen” thing and realizing if that had happened a few historical royal couples they actually reminded me of. :D I’ve always been fascinated by Queens and historical romance novels that are based off them, especially in the British royal family, so I easily started to think of actual royal couples that Haladriel were reminding me of and weirdly enough Tolkien would’ve known of them all too. And there are plenty of books, movies, and TV shows about all of these couples if anyone wants to read/watch that I totally recommend, especially since it could work as AUs in some cases. Putting behind a cut since this is a long post and it’s in historical order too.
Tumblr media
1. Elizabeth of York & King Henry VII
Tumblr media
This couple is what first came to mind to me, especially since the actors who played them in the miniseries “The White Princess” even looked like Morfydd and Charlie (and there’s now fanart that’s using images from this miseries for Haladriel). LOL :D Elizabeth’s parents were King Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville and her mom was the first commoner to marry a king. At first everything was fine for the House of York (White) when they took over the throne from Lancaster (Red) during the Wars of the Roses but then it all turned dark as her dad died unexpectedly, her brothers went missing and likely were murdered, and her uncle King Richard III became obsessed with her and even wanted to marry her. Henry Tudor (Hal is normally is nickname for Henry) was the last hope of the Lancaster house and would start the Tudor line and he actually killed Richard III in a massive battle. After Henry was crowned king the families stuck a deal to unite the houses again under Tudor and Henry and Elizabeth married. It was arranged but they actually fell in love and are to this day considered one of the actual love matches between any royal couple in history as neither of them cheated and were so devoted to each other. After Elizabeth died Henry never married again, which was uncommon in those days, and mourned her for the rest of his life. It’s also why Elizabeth is refereed to as the Queen of Hearts and is the queen shown on the playing card. I’m also getting the latest book on them from Alison Weir soon from the library and I’ll make a separate review post but have seen really good reviews for it so I’m excited to read it.
2. Queen Elizabeth I & Robert Dudley
Tumblr media
I made a separate post about this already but there’s lots in common here too. This Elizabeth was the granddaughter of our first couple, the daughter of Henry III and Anne Boylyn, and considered one of the best queens in history.  Even though she never married she had a long relationship with her childhood friend turned love Robert Dudley. Robert was from a family that served the royals but was tainted at first as both his father and grandfather were considered traitors. It was something he and Elizabeth had in common as her mother was killed by her own father.  Then during her sister Mary’s reign both Elizabeth and Henry were imprisoned in the Tower of London thinking they were both going to be killed. This likely is what bonded them for the rest of their lives and turned their friendship into love even though he was married.  Then they were saved and Elizabeth became Queen after her sister died and Robert was at her side as one of her trusted advisors. They kept up their relationship all through till Robert died in his 50s and even though he was married twice. She couldn’t marry or she would lose power due to the rules in those days as she was expected to give power to him so she could have children, and over time he grew to accept that even though he wanted to be her husband. A lot of us now consider him the unofficial consort since he pretty much did have that role till he passed and Elizabeth never loved anyone else like she did with him. And of course Cate Blanchett playing both Elizabeth and Galadriel.
3. Catherine the Great & Grigory Orlov
Going with the Russian royal family here this also reminded me Haladriel in an AU where like Catherine she would take the throne from the husband she hated and rule for the rest of her life. Grigory was her main ally and her main lover for the rest of his life and they had at least 2 kids out of wedlock too as she never remarried after her husband Peter was killed. She did have a son Paul with Peter though who was still her heir. It was Grigory who helped her create her plan and launch the coup that took out Peter. The show “The Great” on Hulu changed this a lot but the actual story fits more here so no gif to use.
4. Queen Victoria & Lord M & Prince Albert & John Brown
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a tricky one as Queen Victoria was in love 3 times so you can see Haladriel being any or all of the 3 relationships. LOL It started when she became Queen and her prime Minister Lord Melbourne also became her private secretary.  They two of them bonded over so much despite their age difference and fell in love. Most modern historians agree like the show “Victoria” that there were feelings there but neither one acted on them knowing they couldn’t be together. They had 3 years together too before she married and he lost the election, but it’s pretty much known now he was her first love and she was his last as he died a couple years later. She did name her daughter Alice in honor of him as that was his favorite girl’s name and it’s possible that could’ve been the name of his own daughter who died years earlier (her gravestone never had her name on it as she was still a baby). Then Albert came into Victoria’s life oddly enough with Lord M’s blessing and he helped arrange the marriage even saying Albert was like a younger version of himself. Victoria and Albert’s relationship is also considered a great love story among the royal family even with how heated their fights were thanks to people at the palace and other prime ministers writing about it. LOL They also had 9 kids so even with the fighting there was also that between them.  I would recommend watching “The Young Victoria” to get more of their story as personally the TV show was ok with this but the chemistry between Victoria and Lord M overshadowed everything else (which is what I’m worried about with “Rings of Power” and whoever they cast as Celeborn).  Then sadly Albert died young and Victoria was so distraught after his death that she only wore black for the rest of her life/almost 40 years  But she did fall in love again with her Scottish servant John Brown, which there’s a great movie about “Her Majesty, Mrs. Brown” with Judi Dench.  It was another major thing as queens didn’t fall in love with servants and they tried to keep this a secret but it got out and historians found more about it too. But they bonded over the loneliness and John brought happiness back into her life.
5. Princess Louise & Joseph Edgar Bohem
This couple is a newer one I found out about last year thanks to the novel “An Indiscreet Princess” and looking up the history so no gif here either, as this was Queen Victoria’s daughter Louise and the decades long love story she had with her art teacher/sculptor Joseph/Edgar (he was called by both names LOL). They fell in love when she was allowed to attend an art university (she was the first royal to do so) and even though she had to marry they kept up their relationship, eventually with her husband John’s ok as there’s a lot to suggest now that John was gay and their marriage was more arranged. Louise was never able to have children either due to an illness she had as a child so they never had to worry about any children out of wedlock and she and Joseph/Edgar stayed together till he died.  They also both became famous sculptors/artists with their works all over England, Canada, and Australia. So turns out she and her mom were very alike in their relationships, similar now comparing Galadriel, Celebrían, and Arwen.
6. Princess Margaret & Peter Townsend
Tumblr media
This is another one that’s more recent but everything that happened between Margaret and Peter just breaks my heart. They weren’t allowed to be together because of the rules at the time, their age difference, and him being divorced even though they loved each other. Thankfully they reunited again in the years leading up to his death but still just sad they couldn’t be together.  This all has been so well done and shown in “The Crown”.
There’s likely more out there but these are the ones I’m more familiar with and would suggest reading/watching more about. :)

Six headcanons #1
Cathy Parr is usually very calm, very level headed- even more so than Aragon, who can let anger get the better of her sometimes, and Jane, who can be too sympathetic for her own good- but Aragon also once found her sobbing heartbrokenly over that cartoon of the Mars Rover waiting and waiting and waiting to be brought back home to earth. (Cathy was crying too hard to explain herself properly so she just shoved her phone into Aragon’s hand. Aaragon was…. Confused. ‘It’s….a machine? And it’s meant to be sad…. Except it’s just a machine, I don’t understand? Cathy, are you sure there isn’t something else?’ She was as comforting as she could be, but later that night, she tried to get the other Queen’s take on it.
Result? Anne found it really funny because of course Cathy would choose something like that to be The Saddest Thing She Has Ever Seen. Jane thought it was sort of sad, but still thought there must be more to it than that, surely. Anna suggested they tell Cathy it would probably be adopted by aliens and live happily ever after. Kitty took one look at it and looked a bit distraught until Anna jumped in with her Happily Ever After theory.
Anna is actually the more level headed of all the queens. She can come across as having sort of chaotic energy, and she’s definitely fun, but she’s also able to keep calmest in a crisis or a stressful situation.
One year when everyone came down, one by one, with the same flu virus, Kitty brought everyone a get-well-soon plush pillow: Aragon has pillow in the shape of a gold crown (Anne tried really hard to convince her to buy a plush Jesus to annoy her but Kitty refused because she values her life), Boylyn has a blowing-a-kiss emoji, Jane has a heart (Anne again tried to convince Kitty to get one of the heart-organ plushes, again Kitty said no), Anna has an isopod and Cathy has one shaped like an open book. When Kitty finally came down with it a week after everyone else had begun to recover, the other queens brought her a hot pink cat.
Cathy doesn’t really like tea at all but she drank it for about six months after moving into the house with everyone else, partly because she didn’t want to demand a different drink for herself if tea was being made. She gets made it- and gets given tea-related presents- quite often though because her whole aesthetic is very much tea-drinking-book-lover and it’s hard to overcome that.
She and Aragon are very close- sometimes too much company is overwhelming but Aragon never feels like Company so she is the exception. Aragon is her safe person and Aragon lets herself be more vulnerable around Cathy than anyone else.
Anna and Cathy also bonded over being the two wives that ‘didn’t have it that bad’, epecially as it’s hard for them to talk about their own hardships around the queens who suffered more obviously. Cathy specifically has occasional flashes fn anxiety that people really secretly resent her for her study and ideas- not that it stops her in her work, but she sometimes is tormented with the fear she’ll suddenly discover that she’s disliked for it (in the same way that she thought henry enjoyed their debates but was secretly furious). Anna has worked through most of her issues and is confident in herself but reacts very strongly to hearing or seeing people being body- or look- shamed. Films like I Feel Pretty are… hard for her.
Boylyn has a blog and twitter account in which to indulge her interest in politics and religion but it’s under a pseudonym.
Religion is a minor bone of contention between Parr and Aragon but Aragon has conceded that having the bible in English is nice. She sometimes reads outloud from it if Cathy has a bad dream. She also read the Chronicles to her once when she was having a particularly bad period of insomnia- all the ‘x begat y’ was quite hypnotic.
Despite people assuming otherwise, Jane and Aragon are not at all inclined to housework or cooking, any more than the other queens are: it was never even considered in their old lives that they would ever have need of such skills. Anna tried her hand at a bit of cooking as an amusement in her old life but she was the only one. Now they all take turns cooking and cleaning: Boyleyn is (somewhat surprisingly) the best at it. Cathy isn’t bad but tends to forget about things and they burn- she always feels really guilty about it though. Kitty follows youtube recipes and they (mostly) turn out ok. Jane enjoys baking but not cooking. Aragon will trade literally anything to get out of her turn.
Nearly all of them had dogs in their past lives- Aragon had Flo, Anne had Purkoy, Anna had her hunting dogs and Kitty briefly had a lapdog while she was queen before it got taken away upon her arrest. Jane is wary of dogs and Parr dislikes the way they jump and lick and bark. Sometimes the other four will go to the dog park to pet the dogs of strangers (Kitty and Anna sometimes do this just the two of them) and Parr and Jane will go for a walk together somewhere else (and if they see a cat, so much the better!) Because of this, they’ve agreed to have no pets at all because they could never please everyone (Aragon dislikes cats and Anne is minorly allergic). Anna lowkey would like something unusual, like a naked molerat, but she knows it’s useless to even suggest it.
They all agree that mayonnaise is disgusting and the first one to bring it into the house will be cut from the show.

Writers Block Pt 2
(I’d love to hear what people think of this- especially if they think I’m writing Cathy ok. I haven’t written the queens before!)
The door bursts open and suddenly Anne Boylyn is in her bedroom without even bothering to knock first, and Cathy has to clench her fists to stop herself from jumping up to push the girl out onto the landing.
‘Hi Cathy’
She’s chewing gum- the sickly sweet smell of fake watermelon makes Cathy’s stomach roll- and something about it just adds to Anne’s general aura of deliberate obnoxiousness.
‘Get out. I’m busy.’
‘Well that’s not very friendly.’
She turns back to her laptop and doesn’t respond.
‘God, you’re going to get cancer or something, being chained to that thing all day. Don’t you ever take a break?’
She’d like to have a clever response but her brain feels too frazzled to come up with anything.
‘Laptops don’t give you cancer.’ (At least, she hopes they don’t. She’s fucked if they do.)
‘Not when used normally. You’re on it like always though.’
She opens her mouth to protest but she can’t- it’s true after all.
‘Don’t you get tired of working all the time?’
‘No.’
She wants nothing more at that moment than for Anne to stop talking but of course she doesn’t.
‘I think I’d hate it-’
‘Well I don’t.’
‘I would, I definitely get sick of it-’
Anne’s voice is almost singsong now- without even looking to Cathy for permission, she flops down onto her neatly made bed (it was after all easy to keep a bed neatly made if you didn’t actually get into it to sleep), bouncing slightly on the well-sprung mattress.
‘I dont get how you can just sit in here on your own for hours and hours, just working and working….I think I’d get that sickness that you were telling us about…the thing that the prairie settlers got…. Cabin fever? Cathy? Did I get it right?’
‘Yes.’ She has to grit her teeth. Why can’t she be quiet?
‘I’d get tired if I worked like you do- and you don’t even eat….’
‘I do-’
‘Caffeine tablets and energy bars don’t count as actual food, you know that right?’
Of course she knows- but she can’t waste time with meals when she’s got so much to do.
(And does she even deserve to eat, if she can’t write even a short sentence? Writing is, after all, her thing, and what’s the point of a writer who can’t write?)
‘I…. just like to stay focused.’
‘Babes, if you were any more focused, you’d be…’ Anne paused. ‘Ok I can’t think of anything but it was going to be hilarious. Probably.’
Of course Anne is making jokes. It’s not as if she cares really- she’s most likely just tormenting Cathy out of boredom.
And she had successfully managed to drive away probably the only person who really did care...
‘I’d just get bored too- looking at the same thing day after day…’
It’s harder and harder to respond, she’s having to actually clench her first to hold herself together. It feels like Anne is taunting her on purpose: she’s having to lie and a real writer wouldn’t have to lie, a real writer would actually enjoy the work….. But then a real writer wouldn’t be having to battle themselves in order to actually get anything written.
Because you’re not a real writer. You’re a pathetic failure.
‘-after day after day-’
You’ve already let Catalina down, and soon you’ll have to admit to all your fans that you’re letting them down too. Not to mention the other queens.
‘-after day after day-’
They see you as a writer too- what will you be when you don’t even have that?
‘-after day after day after-’
‘Shut up!’
The shout burst from her- at least, she intends to shout. It comes out almost like a wail.
‘Stop it, just stop it! Of course I hate it- did you ever think of that? Of course I hate it- I hate writing and I hate just looking at the blank page and hoping I’m going to come up with something but knowing that I won’t because I’m too- and you rubbing it in doesn’t help, ok! But yes since you ask, I am sick of it, I’m sick of all of it and I’m clearly not going to come up with anything ever, no matter how much time I waste on it-’
She can hear her voice shaking and god it’s humiliating, its humiliating to lose control like this generally but especially so to be practically crying in front of Anne of all people (chilled out, funny Anne, who never seems to get stressed or overwrought about anything, who can laugh at anything)- but she can’t help herself because now she’s saying it, she knows it’s true.
‘I’ve ruined everything, I’ve let everyone down- or I will soon anyway- and now Catalina hates me, I should just give up, I’m not getting anywhere anyway-’
Adrenalin is coursing through her- she needs an outlet, she needs to- She grabs at the papers stacked untidily on her desk, knocking half of them to the floor in the process, and rips them in half.
(It’s not like she’ll need them now anyway.)
‘No!’
For someone sprawled out lazily one minute, Anne moves quickly- like a flash, she’s up, off the bed and covering Cathy’s hands with her own.
‘Ok look I- I need you to just stay completely still for two minutes, alright- can you do that for me?
She’s looking at Cathy so urgently that she nods, albeit shakily- and then Anne is gone.
