SO a few years ago, long before Gandalf Big Naturals was even a thing, I saw this meme and it changed my brain chemistry. Since then I have googled it several times, but never been able to find a trace of it. Alas, it has come to this, and I have been forced to re-create it myself for your viewing pleasure.

The Fellowship When I was a kid, my folks basically told me I was a hobbit. I cherish the memory of them reading all these books to me--and I turned around and read them to my little siblings and eventually to my partner! I've drawn and painted a lot for The Hobbit but never The Lord of the Rings, and this ECCC seemed like the right time to debut one!

I love how entirely guilty Boromir feels after trying to get the ring from Frodo. The way he calls out to him after realizing what he’s done, the way he falls to the ground and cries. He was more than this moment, and he bravely defended his little friends, making them seem important to the cause and keeping them alive. I love him. He’s imperfect, but noble. He was more than that moment. He was all the moments before, and the moments after.

It amazes me that in a world where oaths are so valued and taken so seriously, Elrond does not have the members of the Fellowship swear any oath. He only encourages them to stay with the Ring-bearer for as long as they will. Yet every single member remains true to the Quest in their own way. Everyone makes contributions that make its success possible. Not because of any oath. Sam is under no oath to follow Frodo to Mordor. Boromir is under no oath to lay down his life for Merry and Pippin. Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are under no oath to follow the hobbits. But they do all these things anyway, because it is right, and because they love each other. Boromir repents for his actions toward Frodo not because he has broken a literal oath, but because he has broken his friend’s trust, and his actions were just plain wrong. Frodo has sworn no official oath, but made a vow of his own will, because he knows the task must be done by someone, and he is not forced to be the one; he chooses: “I will take the Ring.” Within the entire Fellowship is pure love and nobility and loyalty and that, rather than any oath, saves the world. From the beginning, Elrond knows this is the better option. He knows what Fëanor’s oath did to the world. He knows that there has to be another way. And it turns out there is.

Can I just say how much I enjoy that almost everyone in Lord of the Rings is an adult. Like a grown ass adult. I do realize the hobbits are relatively young for their species, but there’s no chosen one teenagers, they’re not a group of random twenty something’s who also happen to somehow be geniuses, no childlike drama or super honed abilities that have somehow only been developed before high school. Just a bunch of old, weary adults getting shit done, honing their craft after years and years and being badass regardless of age.
Editing for the new folks reblogging: Pippin is the exception this. I mentioned the hobbits are young for their species, with Pippin being the youngest. Still, the main idea is that overall, this isn’t a YA novel with all twenty-something protagonists.
