Book Review: A perfect weekend read!

Arc Review of 'Soul of the Sorceress' by Cassandra Diviak - @queen-kass-the-writer

I'll keep this review spoiler free, but in Soul of the Sorceress we're back in Runswick with Cordelia and Percy! I have to admit to having missed these two, so I was looking forward to settling into this second book in the Shadow and Soul series.

While the book opens quickly on our two main characters, it's made apparent early on that this book has not been written for new readers in mind. If you pick this book up without realising it's book two, you're going to find yourself very lost, very quickly. There's little-to-no recap, and it has sections that allude to character histories that, without context, simply mean nothing to the reader but, honestly, I'm nitpicking. This is a second book, and it has deep lore, established backstory and character histories that I was aware of going in.

Despite these small areas of potential improvement, Cassandra's skillful storytelling pulls us into a world of magic and romance very quickly. I devoured this book in just a few hours, but it's got a lovely pacing that lends its content to a quiet evening and a glass of wine, or a relaxed weekend perusal.

There is intrigue and high stakes, but you never feel pushed to rush the story. It's cleverly interspersed with periods of soft romance, and quiet affection between Cordelia and Percy and despite my ever growing desire to understand the motivations behind the other players on the board, and what allies or dangers they might turn out to be, it was my love of Percy and Cordelia's relationship that truly captured my attention throughout.

A gorgeous addition to the series, and I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for the next installment to add to my collection!

A Princess in Plaid by Amy Jarecki

When a lady’s dreams come true then turn into a nightmare on her wedding day – what should she do? How can she save face? How will she and her family stay members of the ton? This is what Grace, once a lady now a princess, has to deal with in this story. How will her future unfold and will she get a happily ever after or not?

What I liked: * Grace: beautiful, talented, educated, focused, somewhat self-centered, unaware of the plight of those around her, strong, resilient, grows a lot as she deals with what happens and falls for a man she never dreamed would be perfect for her

* Frasier Buchanan: clan chieftain, living in the highlands, poor, clan chased down and killed for treason, hiding for many years, strong, wise, wants the best for his clan, saves Grace and falls hard for her

* The first chapter that set the stage and presented the problem with an easy solution that was not accepted by Grace’s husband – which left Grace and others in a bit of a quandary

* The fact that Grace would do “her duty” for the sake of her family and her younger sister’s dreams for a future

* The way Grace grew as she spent time with the Buchanan clan while snowed in

* The strong family ties the MacGalloway’s have for one another

* That I felt part of the story, cared, and was hoping for a happy ending

* Knowing there is another book to look forward to

What I didn’t like: * Who and what I was meant not to like

* The way those in charge could flog or kill anyone without going to court first

* The way society was set up so that one daughter could ruin a family just by making the wrong choice or save it with the right one

Did I like this book? Yes

Would I read more in this series? Yes

Thank you to BookSprout for allowing me the opportunity to read a copy of "Sun Sea, the Billionaire & Me", written by Harmony Knight. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Overall, I rated this novel a 4/5 stars!

The book follows Jonah & Fran, who are the best friends of Matt & Robbie (Roberta). They get married and Jonah & Fran end up not taking the chance of starting a relationship with one another. Then a year later, the two rekindle a connection during a group trip where they are left alone together on a deserted island during a storm.
