Derived from the Sanskrit word bishu, which means ‘to ask for prosperity from the Gods during the harvest season’, farmers thank the lord for the successful harvest and welcome the spring season. Observed at almost the same time as Baisakhi in Punjab, Poila Baisakh in Bengal, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu and Vishu in Kerala, this year, Rongali Bihu will be celebrated on April 14.

A festival is an event of joy. It brings about an atmosphere of joy and merriment all around. The Bihu is such a festival. It is a local festival of Assam, our state. It is observed all over Assam with much pomp and show.
Magh Bihu 2022: The Bihu is the most important festival of Assam. There are three Bihus in a year. The 'Kati Bihu' is observed on the last day of the month of Ahin'. The 'Magh Bihu' or the 'Bhogali Bihu' is observed on the last day of the month of 'Puha'. The 'Bohag Bihu' is celebrated on the last day of the month of 'Chait' and continues for a week.
Celebration in Assam With Good Messages And Wishes, When is magh Bihu in Assam
The festival I like most is the Bohag Bihu. It is also called the Rangali Bihu. It is really a festival of spring. It is a kin to the May festival of England and the spring festival of Northern India.
The origin of the festival could be the seasonal change. Winter goes and spring comes. Trees bear new leaves. Spring rains make the dry land green and lovely. This change in season fills the farmer's heart with joy. This finds expression in this festival. It has, thus, an agricultural background.
Bihu songs and dances sing the glory of nature in its joyous aspect. The Bohag Bihu is observed all over Assam. The people of Assam observe it with due pomp and gaiety.
On the first day of Bohag Bihu people bathe their cattle and worship them. On the second and the third day, people make merriment of all kinds.
They welcome the festival with songs and dances. People, old and young, put on new clothes, they eat cakes or 'Pithas' and other items of food made at home.
They present 'Gamochas' to one another. Groups of singers and dancers fill the air with songs of joy. There is joy everywhere.
I like the Rangali Bihu festival most because it has something special about it. It has a mass appeal. People of all races, languages and religions take part in this festival.
It brings people together. People forget their petty differences. It promotes the spirit of love and brotherhood. It makes the bond of unity stronger. It brings the message of love, peace and happiness for all.
