I’m always thinking about the Monster Mash. Bobby “Boris” Pickett accidentally made the most iconic Halloween jam of the 20th century and he decided to go all in on it for the rest of his life. The man spent the rest of his professional career wearing a lab coat and singing goofy Halloween novelty songs. The Monster Swim. The Monster’s Holiday. Have you listened to The Monster Rap? You have to listen to The Monster Rap. It’s about Frankenstein’s monster learning how to rap because Igor went to DJ school.

Late in the cycle as I continued to labor
I beheld something unusual
A cryo-frozen citizen had begun to awake
Rather than stumble
She did a mutant's dance
Appropriate only for destroying mausoleums
It became strangely popular
She did a mutant's dance
From the rooms where I worked
To the finer ones where ancient citizens take their meals
Depraved barbarians left their planets
To be beneficially electrocuted
Then they did a mutant's dance
Appropriate only for destroying mausoleums
It became strangely popular
They did a mutant's dance
Ancillaries enjoyed their time at my invitation
Several Translators were invited, as were ancient citizens and their daughters
All found the event beneficial
Beasts provided entertainment
Followed by more desecration of the dead
Five of the most uncivilized musicians
Did a mutant's dance
Appropriate only for destroying mausoleums
It became strangely popular
They did a mutant's dance
The oldest guest, nearly dead
Protested
Speaking angrily, she asked,
"Why are we not dancing like we did in my time?"
Your dance is now a mutant's dance
Appropriate only for destroying mausoleums
It became strangely popular
It is a mutant's dance
The elder was calmed by this explanation
And joined the house of musicians
Virally the dance has spread
Tell all who ask it was Bohrs House who invented
The mutant's dance
Appropriate only for destroying mausoleums
It became strangely popular
Do the mutant's dance!

Bobby "Boris" Pickett - Monster's Holiday
Lyrics below the cut.
It was the night before Christmas and all through the castle
My monsters were having a Yuletide hassle
The tree was all trimmed in ghoulish things
Like monster fangs and vampire wings
(It was a monster's holiday)
But they were up to no good
(It was a monster's holiday)
Didn't act like good monsters should
(It was a monster's holiday)
They found themselves a new play
(It was a monster's holiday)
They planned to rob Santa's sleigh
They were making a list and checking it twice
Frankenstein wanted a shiny new trike
A new chain for Yarnush
A brace for Igor's back
A speed shaver for Wolfman
A new cape for Drac
(It was a monster's holiday)
But they were up to no good
(It was a monster's holiday)
Didn't act like good monster's should
(It was a monster's holiday)
They found themselves a new play
(It was a monster's holiday)
They planned to rob santa's sleigh
The Mummy was to signal from the castle roof
At the very first sound of a reindeer hoof
As Santa slid down the chimmney wall
The zombies were to make off with sleigh and all
From beyond the moat arose such a clatter
I jumped to the window to see what was the matter
Like a bolt of lightning it happened so quick
And there in our midst stood old Saint Nick
He began to dig down deep in his sack
And came up with the traction for Igor's back
Drac got his cape
Franky's trike made him behave
Even Wolfman was happy now he can shave
(It was a monster's holiday)
And all ended well
(It was a monster's holiday)
And Santa was really swell
(It was a monster's holiday)
No need to rob santa's sleigh
(It was a monster's holiday)
Maybe next year he'll come back
So the children everywhere were spared the grief
Of losing their presents to a monster sleigh thief
Now the monsters love Santa and say they'll behave
And never again rob sleighs or graves
(It was a monster's holiday)
Igor, what do you think of Santa now? "Arrrrrr... Santa good!"
And Santa said as he drove out of sight
"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night blaaaa!"
Jingle bells jingle bells jingle all the way
Oh what fun it is to ride in a one horse open sleigh
Dashing through the snow
Where is that reindeer with the red nose blaaaa
On Dasher and Dancer and Comet and Cupid...

I don't post on here too often these days but I put out an album this year and I'm really proud of it. It's a scrappy, noisy indie rock record about death and loss and love and movies and the weather and novelty records. It's called Boris Sent Me and my band is called Felt Lips. 11 songs, 30 minutes, almost exclusively downers, you're gonna love it.

Tuesday Tunes 128: All Hallows
Tuesday Tunes 128: All Hallows
As you may have noticed, yesterday was Halloween. I have played a set of tunes for this a couple of times previously, but felt that doing so again yesterday would have been overkill on my part – you really don’t need to see me every day, do you? Well, not until next month, anyway. But rather than miss out completely, I thought I could theme today’s tunes around it: after all, Halloween is the eve…

I was today years old when I found out that Bobby “Boris” Pickett called out Elvis Presley back in 2006 for hating “The Monster Mash” at a live performance.
He said “Elvis called this the dumbest song he ever heard. Well, Elvis, I’m still alive.” That is the level of petty I aspire to be. I saw someone say in the tags say that Bobby said “Try me, bitch.”
