Just felt like a folky-jazz kind of night. It's so spare that I'm amazed that the three of them can make it beautiful, as well, but it is definitely that.

“Fifteen years ago, [Darcy James Argue] began making waves with his exciting 18-piece orchestra, Secret Society,” BBC Radio 3’s J to Z presenter Kevin Le Gendre says of his guest. “He’s gone from strength to strength ever since and is now one of contemporary jazz’s most notable large ensemble leaders. His music is as interesting and atmospheric as it is gutsy and powerful …” You can hear Argue talk about and share some of the music that’s influenced him and his new album, Dynamic Maximum Tension, by Miles Davis and Gil Evans, Irving Berlin, Bob Brookmeyer, and Duke Ellington, at about 50 minutes into the episode here.

Remembering Bob Brookmeyer on his birthday... R.I.P.
Robert Edward "Bob" Brookmeyer (December 19, 1929 – December 15, 2011) was an American jazz valve trombonist, pianist, arranger, and composer. Brookmeyer began playing professionally in his teens. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, Brookmeyer first gained widespread public attention as a member of Gerry Mulligan's quartet from 1954 to 1957. He later worked with Jimmy Giuffre, before rejoining Mulligan's Concert Jazz Band. He was part of small groups led by Stan Getz, Jimmy Giuffre, and Gerry Mulligan in the 1950s. He garnered 8 Grammy Award nominations during his lifetime. His eighth Grammy Award nomination was for an arrangement from the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra's album, Forever Lasting, shortly before his death. That same album was also nominated in the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album; the CD was entirely made up of Brookmeyer's compositions.Photo: Bill Crow, Gerry Mulligan and Bob Brookmeyer of the Gerry Mulligan Quartet. Found this album two days ago for 10$.
It’s a mono release. Released in 1963 but it contains tracks from three various sessions recorded in 1954 and 1957.
Tumblr media
1st session: july ’54
„Liberty Bell”, „The Blues”
(Bob Brookmeyer - trombone, John Williams - piano, Bill Anthony - bass, Frank Isola - drums)
2nd session: july ’54 (three days later)
„Red devil”, „Doe eyes”, „Last chance”
(Bob Brookmeyer - trombone, John Williams - piano, Red Mitchell- bass, Frank Isola - drums)
3rd session (june ’57)
„Slow freight”
(Bob Brookmeyer - trombone, Jimmy Giuffre - tenor sax, guitarist Jim Hall - guitar, Ralph Pena - bass, Dave Bailey - drums).
„brook’s blues”
(Bob Brookmeyer - piano, guitarist Jim Hall - guitar, Ralph Pena - bass, Dave Bailey - drums).
Very interesting sessions, unexpectedly very blues-oriented and swinging, but (excpectedly) in a cool, relaxed way.
