I should really throw this thing into version control at some point. Maybe I should actually host a copy through the free web hosting GitHub provides too, since I don't run the main website, and I'd like to have a second official place for people to access this implementation, independently of my friend's website for the concept as a whole.

Getting the CSS to behave was a battle, because Firefox and Edge/Chrome/etc have multiple incompatible ways of achieving the same thing. It's also a dirty hack. I wanted to see how far I could stretch just CSS for the appearance, but in order to get a solid color fill in a div in high contrast mode, I basically had to really abuse CSS - I had to give the element a background, but the actual color of the background is ignored and replaced with whatever color the OS and web engine are overriding you with (black is the only one I've seen, but it just hit me it could be any other color in principle), and then I use the invert filter to get the white or gray from that. Perverse.

Now if it was going to be just the current functionality, I'd say it should use standardized CSS system theme colors - like LinkText for off and VisitedText for on. That way we could use two visually distinct colors that users have already picked. (Conversely! Some users might not want to see visited links in a different color, and then the abacus would be useless.) But we have this idea of expanding the functionality to let users change the colors of bits later, so I'm reserving colors for now.

The combination of the last two paragraphs is even worse. Once you're in CSS/SVG filter land, you can't really specify colors directly anymore. So if you wanted to have another color fill..., well, "green" and "#00ff00" are out, and the new name for that color is something like `sepia(100%) hue-rotate(90deg) saturate(5000%)` appended to the end of the filter that got you a reliable white. With enough filter play you can reliably get exactly your desired colors even as high-contrast/"restricted colors" mode tries to stop you from doing just that. Clever hack and nice to have in my tool belt but also obviously if it came to me in code review my reflex would be to reject it and find a better way.

So in the long term, especially if I add bit coloring to this thing, I should probably move away from generating the visuals with CSS styling of basic HTML elements, and towards writing SVG definitions.
