just. augh. at ghost hill, sonic watching his friends get pulled in to the sky. desperate to save them. and Shadow is trying to keep sonic focused, and remind him as like. nice as he can that theyre gone.

And Sonic still wanting to save them, still dertimined, still missing them ARTRHGT. And Shadow reacing toward him- to COMFORT HIM??? To let Sonic know hes there???

and then HESITATING and pulling away when Sonic turns back like AUURGH??? IM GONNA BE SICK??? And even when Sonic is still trying, Shadow just tell him again and tries to bring him back to focus on whats happening, again as nice as Shadow-ly possible.

They start.

And the gears catch,

The more they catch,

The sticker the situation becomes.

I don't know why I'm like that.

I wanted to say,

You're what every romance novel is about.

You're made of stardust and hope,

Sunlight and candy,

And you stain every part of me.

I wanted to say I'm so lucky

To even be speaking to you.

Because typically if a commoner approached royalty,

They'd be hauled away and locked up for treason.

But you look at me.

And you smile.

The gears turn desperately

Clicking, catching, locking on

That stringy, horrid gum.

"I'm yours."

You laugh.

And the machine spits out smoke and

Flames,

And calls it quits.

I think the reason I resonate so much with Toya is that he's the voice of the standard—if beautiful—path to a goal. He has studied Go since he was four years old. He's a pro-level player. He cares about Go, deeply, and he's very very good at it, but he's not surprising, he's not celestial, he's not... supernatural the way Hikaru is. And I've always felt like more of a Toya than a Hikaru. I'm ambitious, in my own way. I take a careful, internal path to my goals, I'm smart, I'm persistent, I'm good at what I care to be good at. But there's a kind of supernatural connection that I just don't feel I have.
