Ford Motor Company in 2021 re-released the much-anticipated Ford Bronco as the product has been off the market since 1996. The launch was very successful as Ford executives said they “broke the internet”. All within 48 hours of the launch the Bronco had secured 100,000 reservation which were majority new customers. Fords marketing team’s goal was to stay connected to their new customers so they can have a positive experience from obtaining the Bronco through the length of their ownership. Tom Hing, the Bronco’s marketing team’s manager, created a SWAT team that designed a three-stem marketing strategy approach to achieve their goal of clear communication and positive experiences (thenewswheel, 2022). The three-step strategy include emotional appeal, product benefits/features, and efficient communication.

Right off the bat the Ford Bronco was emotionally appealing considering its past. People gravitated toward the style of the new Bronco. The vehicle kept the same box like, off road, and rugged look but added a clean and sleek modern look. As if they took a thunderbird off road while combining it with a designer lifestyle. The Bronco meets the modern design with keeping that old vintage feel. The buzz was in the air as the Bronco was set to make its return and it didn’t disappoint. Along with the anticipation, their advertisements are emotionally appealing as they try to motivate consumers using phrases and themes like “American Made”, “Built Ford Tough”, “Raised By Goats”, and “Bronco Rides Again”.

Ford Bronco’s product benefits are endless. They used the same acronym as they did in 1966, GOAT. This stands for “Goes Over Any Terrain”. There are seven different GOAT modes in the Bronco giving the consumer an option to go wherever they want. Normal for everyday driving, eco for efficiency, sport for handling, mud for uneven terrain, slippery for rain and snow, sand for soft terrain, and Baja for desserts. Stuart Jennings, the creative director put in good terms saying, “Whatever you’re into, you can make this vehicle work for you”. Depending on the model you purchase the Bronco will come equipped with at least five of the terrain management options (lethalperformance, 2022). Other product benefits include standard active safety features, east to remove doors, capability, customizability, 400-watt inverter, cargo management system, and a state-of-the-art liftgate.           

The third stem is having efficient communication to its consumers causing the Bronco brand to excel. Since the marketing team wanted that positive experience for their customers, they were able to highlight the customizability of the Bronco. This helps appeal to each individual consumer’s needs. The Bronco team were able to implement features quickly that were requested from consumers like different types of interiors, hardtop/rooftops options, accessories, and colors. For instance, they created an all-black interior that was significantly requested which led to the sellout of the first edition models. Today the consumer can go and design a Bronco to their own specific specifications virtually. This shows the consumer how the vehicle looks while highlighting the benefits and features before purchasing. Tim Hing wanted his team to listen to customers to ultimately improve the Bronco experience as well as sales. The chart below shows that people tend to buy models that are more customizable.

The implantation of the marketing strategy to highlight the emotional feel, product benefits/features, and transparent communication helped backed the Broncos success. With 2021 the Bronco won awards like 4X4 of the year, best adventure vehicle, and American car of the year (FordMedia, 2022). In 2022 Forbes called it the wheels of the year and the best off road SUV, while being the best in motoring and a finalist in utility.  In terms of sales Ford sold 116,227 vehicles in 2021 as they’re on pace to match that in 2022 (carfigures, 2022).

Although it’s still third in its segment behind the Jeep Wrangler and 4runner, both competing lines have seen a decrease of sales due to the Bronco. The Bronco now contains about 27% of the market as sales decreased for Wrangler by 22% and 2% for the 4runner. On a YTD trend the Bronco shows positive growth in Q2 of this year (fordauthority, 2022). It might be hard to catch Wrangler’s 46% of market share, but they’ve already surpassed the 4runner with only being existence for only two years.

If you use the product-market growth diagram, the Ford Motor Company utilize their resources in product expansion when it comes to the Bronco. Ford already had a present market of rugged outdoor vehicles like the Raptor trucks, but they expanded in that market when they introduced the Bronco. Now Ford has a SUV in the market to compete with Jeep and Toyota. They increased sales in the best possible way by using organic growth. They invested their money in a retired Ford product that provided them organic growth 30 years ago. Through the investment of the Bronco, they were able to create a modern version that appealed to the market. Lastly, they performed and drove home their marketing strategy as it was so important for Tim Hing to get the results Ford Motor company was looking for.

The question that comes to the table is, will Ford be able to keep the Bronco line growing or is it just a trend due to the recent release. Many people are having the same conversation if the Bronco is a bust or not. Will Jeep respond with another feature within the Wrangler? Although the Bronco’s awards do speak for themselves. Dear Dad--

Another week full of joy at being alive has passed! That may sound sarcastic, and it mostly is, but things are actually improving. I’ve been quite depressed of late, and I appreciate your offers of help. I’m going to be quite alright, I’ve decided. A few things are getting better on their own, and a few things are getting better because I’m working at getting them better. Examples: It helps when it’s not 90 degrees outside--an increasingly frequent occurrence here in Maine--since that makes it 90 degrees inside. A window AC unit can only create a cone of tolerability directly in front of it, while the rest of the trailer feels like a sauna. Once September began, however, it was like a door slamming shut. Now we’re getting cold fronts and lows in the upper 40s in the mornings and highs in the 70s, and it’s the kind of weather that makes you happy just to be alive and outside.

Another thing getting better, if only with agonizing slowness, is my job. The main problem with my job right now is this: There are seven audits. I’ve learned about 6.8 of them, but there’s one part of one audit that I’ve mentioned in the past, it’s just an order of magnitude more complicated. After a few more months it won’t seem that way at all, but for now, it’s still Chinese algebra--I might as well be looking at Sanskrit; it just makes no sense to me most of the time. And the boss is, I think, tired of me not knowing it. The boss can, I think, go fornicate himself, because, the way I look at it, if I’m trying my best to learn, and I haven’t learned it yet, it’s not because I’m failing, it’s because the shit’s complicated, and he’s failed to teach it to me yet. Ha ha, take that, boss man!

Anyway, I’m attempting to let it go. And now that my retirement savings from Progressive is completely gone, I’m also attempting to live within my means again, which is proving a challenge. And it’s not a challenge because of my extravagant lifestyle, it’s a challenge because everyone wants money in exchange for shit, and I’m only getting $14.00 per hour so far. Also, the casino is taking $30 off each paycheck, a total of 10 times, to pay for my $300 state gaming license, which I’m required to have. Also, the casino is taking $47 out of each paycheck, a total of 4 times, because of something they fucked up with my benefits that somehow put me in arrears. I am forced to wonder if Consumer Reports ever made a top 10 list of inexpensive brands of cat foot that, in a pinch, might be fit for human consumption.

So some of my concerns are financial. Some others are related to making new friends. Zach and I have both been attempting to make new friends lately, and to our horror, the number of friends we have here in Maine is actually going down. We made one friend when we moved here, Josh, the one who is addicted to Christmas decorations, and for various reasons, we don’t hang out with him any more. I made a new friend who promptly disappeared on me. Zach made a couple of new friends that have decided not to return his texts. We are forced to wonder what unpleasant odors we might be emitting. My goal was to have a New Year’s Eve party here that I could invite 5 people to, and at this point, I’m not going to reach the number 5 unless 3 of them arrive at gunpoint. So I’m going to attempt to make some new friends. Working in a casino should help; got lots of interesting coworkers. And if we can ever get past this Covid bullshit, I might be able to attend a social gathering every now and again.

I have begun my two month scary movie marathon! I began with Night of the Demon, as I always do, and I’ve been watching a few of my other favorites too, like The Legend of Hell House, and the Haunting, and The House on Haunted Hill, and The Haunting of Hill House, and House of Usher, and House (Japan, 1979).

I think some of the news is going to have to take the form of a bullet list.

I thought “The quality of mercy is not strained,” was from the Bible. Nope, it’s from The Merchant of Venice.

The casino, for all the money they’re taking from me, is going to give me a $50 WalMart gift card, as a reward for emailing H.R. a copy of my vaccination card.

As of today, I have put away that AC unit. We needed it last week to avoid dying of heatstroke, but we’re not going to need it again until probably next June or July.

I’m about to attempt to quit smoking, because I can no longer afford it. Next few days, I should think. I’ll keep you posted. I must buy gum. I need so much sugar-free gum. Perhaps the WalMart gift card will be used for gum. That’s some bullshit; I wanted to use it for something fun, and nourishing to the soul, like...Diet Pepsi. But noooo.

I continue to love the mild weather here, and the frigid winter in particular. At some point, I’m going to experience the ecstasy of having to wake up early in order to dig my car out of the snow, so I can get to work on time. I assume, every once in a while, there’s a snowstorm that’s bad enough, no one is able to get to work for hours and hours. I am looking forward to all of this! I think it draws one closer to one’s neighbors when you live under such shared duress, and the shoveling is good exercise. Also, we only have a few feet of driveway to shovel; it’s going to have to be a pretty apocalyptic snowstorm to push us into heart attack territory. Then, when I make it to work on time, I can be the one person whom everyone else resents, because he proved that it’s possible to make it to work, and now everyone has to show up and do their jobs, when their true desire was to stay home and not do their jobs for a change. Well, tough titty, coworkers. Ricky’s gotta get PAID.

One thing I’m trying to keep my eyes on is the prospect of getting a new car. It may not be new, and it may not be a car--I’m considering a modest SUV--but it would be a new vehicle for me. The reason I’m considering purchasing a modest SUV, which normally I’d find abhorrent because of their poor fuel economy, is because I now live in the land of potholes. In Austin, if a pothole got bad, I knew it wouldn’t be long before a crew came out and fixed it. Here, with all the freezing and thawing, some roads just develop too many of them too quickly, so those roads just spend a lot of time sucking, and being full of potholes. My car, Beige Lightning, had a somewhat creaky suspension before we moved here, and now has a very creaky suspension. I’ve decided, therefore, that I’d like something a bit more impervious to potholes. Also, as a rapidly aging white guy, I claim my right to want something with a bigger, faster engine. Perhaps the money I save from quitting smoking will make this easier to grasp. Will advise!

2021 Subaru Crosstrek Outdoor: Possibly the best car for Canadian winters

With the first significant snow fall well under way I decided to blow the wet snow before it got too deep and heavy for my old Massey-Ferguson. Well about a quarter of the way down my driveway I looked up to see a trail of something brown oozing onto the white stuff. Scurrying back up the hill I shut the engine off to discover that thankfully it wasn’t oil but some rusted antifreeze spewing out of the radiator cap. Jumping into Subaru’s latest addition of their best selling SUV, the Crosstrek Outdoor, I recalled a television commercial from my youth. The black and white low lit night scene started with the commentator saying “What does the snow plow driver drive to work?” The camera pulls out as the driver gets to the yard and starts up the plow, when we see a Volkswagen Beetle.

Why did I remember that commercial? Probably because I had about half a foot of wet packed snow to contend with in my driveway, not even thinking about how deep the snow was at the entrance where the plow usually pushes up as much snow as possible to ruin everyone’s day. Now back in the sixties we negotiated the roads in our rear wheel drive sedans, but we’ve turned into wimps. When front wheel drive cars came out, we were able to apply power to the steered wheels and pull ourselves out of the city plow’s wrath a lot easier. These days it seems like we can’t survive sans all-wheel-drive. You’ll notice I said we because like most people, as cars have changed, my lack of time behind the wheel of a rear wheel driver has been drastically cut and my proficiency has dropped as well. Yes, like most people I welcome all-wheel-drivers and I especially welcomed the Crosstrek to get me through today.

And I recall a time even when we were still driving rear wheel drive cars back in the ‘70s, a Japanese 4x4 caught my eye – the Subaru B.R.A.T.  A small pickup with rear-facing buckets in the bed, clearly something that would drive today’s legislators insane. The writing was on the wall, the B.R.A.T (for Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter – talk about a mouthful) was an alternative to the big heavy 4x4s of the day and gave Subaru a foothold in the lucrative North American four-wheel-drive market. Of course a lot has changed in the five decades since, except that Subaru continues to lead the affordable SUV/crossover market, and its top seller is the compact Crosstrek.

What’s New

Well Subaru has just upped the anti in the crowded, hotly contested segment by adding a second, more powerful engine to the Crosstrek line up. Pulled form the company’s Outback and Legacy parts bin, the 2.5L boxer four cylinder now finds a home in two of the Crosstrek’s trim lines. There’s a 30 horse and 31 lb-ft premium over the base 2.0L boxer mill, that’s 182 horses and 176 lb-ft of torque going to the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Surprisingly the 2.5 liter also is remarkably fuel efficient.

To date the 2.5L is available only in the Outdoor and Limited trims, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the option makes its way into the other trims. Sadly, the larger engine is not available with the 6-speed manual transmission, but the CVT with paddle shifters, too bad as it would be a really nice combo. Yes the AWD system that comes with the CVT is far more electronically advanced and capable of going into further and deeper in the rough than the one that comes with the manual, still, it would just be nice to have a third pedal with the larger engine.  

Best of all, unlike some manufacturers, who reserve larger displacement engines exclusively to the top tier trim levels, the Outdoor is in the middle of the Crosstrek trim level.

The Outdoor goodie bag doesn’t end there. You also get the new Dual-function X-Mode. X-Mode better manages throttle response to avoid wheel spin and controls power output to the center differential and individual wheels as well as being able to have you descend slippery slopes with its hill decent control. But let’s face it, we’re not in a perfect world and there are times the white stuff is just too deep and you just need to gun it to get out. Enter Dual-function X-Mode, which allows you to do just that - think of it as shutting off the traction control.

There’s even more, you get a wide-angle front view camera (unique to the Outdoor), just the ticket when you’re avoiding stumps and boulders on the new path up to the lake, side/rear vehicle detection system (SRVD), an 8-inch infotainment screen, and Subaru’s driver assist technology - Eye-Sight with its new lane centering assist. All for only $29,995 Considering the bare, entry level, Convenience with the smaller mill will run you $23,795 and the only other trim where you can get the 2.5L is the Limited at $34,495, the Outdoor is a no brainer.

While all 2021 models get a redesigned grille and new wheel options, the Outdoor can easily be distinguished from the rest of the Crosstrek line by its rather overly large, garish black cladding on the wheel wells. Sorry Subaru. I know it’s an attempt at making it look tougher, but…

The Greenhouse

The interior combines functionality with taste. The buckets are comfortable wrapped in easy to clean soft-touch all-weather material with the Crosstrek name embroidered in gold on the seatbacks and gold stitching on the seams. Gold stitching continues throughout the interior highlighted by a gold colored steering wheel spoke. The Outdoor has almost all the requirements I noted a few weeks back as the ideal Canadian (winter) car, namely heated front seats, heated steering wheel and floor mounted heater ducts to keep rear seat passengers’ footsies warm.

There’s ample head, leg, and shoulder room for four adults with two USB ports in the instrument panel and another two in the armrest console. Despite being on the smaller scale of its competitors, there’s more cargo room than most including Chevy’s Trailblazer.

The verdict

The Crosstrek’s competitors include the Chevy Trailblazer, Nissan Qashqai and Mazda CX-30 to mention a few. Yet the Subie stands out with its low center of gravity despite having a good amount of ground clearance, which clearly makes it adept at handling light off-roading a swell as highway travel. In its eight year history the Crosstrek has always been a strong competent contender and one of the more affordable all-wheel-drive vehicles, add in the latest features, combined with its sporty agility, and the Crosstrek has left the competition choking in its dust.

Best of all the 2.5 liter is surprisingly fuel efficient, despite trudging through some heavy snow near the end of my week long time with the Outdoor I averaged a respectable 8.0L/100km.

Epilogue

Not too long after I dropped off the Crosstrek I found myself behind the wheel of the Nissan Rogue. Well, let me tell you it didn’t take long to realize that the Subie is significantly quieter in drowning out road noise.
