Alexa in crisis
*It’ll be a shock if Alexa is killed, because this was the one alleged consumer mega-hit of the Internet-of-Things smart home.
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/11/amazon-alexa-is-a-colossal-failure-on-pace-to-lose-10-billion-this-year/
Amazon is going through the biggest layoffs in the company's history right now, with a plan to eliminate some 10,000 jobs. One of the areas hit hardest is the Amazon Alexa voice assistant unit, which is apparently falling out of favor at the e-commerce giant. That's according to a report from Business Insider, which details "the swift downfall of the voice assistant and Amazon's larger hardware division."
Alexa has been around for 10 years and has been a trailblazing voice assistant that was copied quite a bit by Google and Apple. Alexa never managed to create an ongoing revenue stream, though, so Alexa doesn't really make any money. The Alexa division is part of the "Worldwide Digital" group along with Amazon Prime video, and Business Insider says that division lost $3 billion in just the first quarter of 2022, with "the vast majority" of the losses blamed on Alexa. That is apparently double the losses of any other division, and the report says the hardware team is on pace to lose $10 billion this year. It sounds like Amazon is tired of burning through all that cash.
A division in crisis
The BI report spoke with "a dozen current and former employees on the company's hardware team," who described "a division in crisis." Just about every plan to monetize Alexa has failed, with one former employee calling Alexa "a colossal failure of imagination," and "a wasted opportunity." This month's layoffs are the end result of years of trying to turn things around. Alexa was given a huge runway at the company, back when it was reportedly the "pet project" of former CEO Jeff Bezos. An all-hands crisis meeting took place in 2019 to try to turn the monetization problem around, but that was fruitless. By late 2019, Alexa saw a hiring freeze, and Bezos started to lose interest in the project around 2020. Of course, Amazon now has an entirely new CEO, Andy Jassy, who apparently isn't as interested in protecting Alexa.
The report says that while Alexa's Echo line is among the "best-selling items on Amazon, most of the devices sold at cost." One internal document described the business model by saying, "We want to make money when people use our devices, not when they buy our devices."
That plan never really materialized, though. It's not like Alexa plays ad breaks after you use it, so the hope was that people would buy things on Amazon via their voice. Not many people want to trust an AI with spending their money or buying an item without seeing a picture or reading reviews. The report says that by year four of the Alexa experiment, "Alexa was getting a billion interactions a week, but most of those conversations were trivial commands to play music or ask about the weather." Those questions aren't monetizable....

Roo is a bit of a party pooper here. (But Roo does not poop at parties.)
A GENTLE WORD OF CAUTION REGARDING STREAMS, ALBUMS, and SYMBOLS
First and foremost, streams are dropping like hell this weekend. So please run playlists on all possible devices (I'll put links at the bottom of this post). PLEASE DO NOT NEGLECT STREAMING as we are in the red.
Of course we need to focus on Angel right now. However, Like Crazy, Face, and Jimin himself are predicted to be nominated for song, best album, and artist of the year for MAMA. Actual trophy awards at a broadcast year-end award show! But the digital points are low for song and album, so we need to work on CONSISTENT global streaming for Jimin in addition to all our boys every single day!
Second, a Naver article stated that Jungkook's album will drop on July 14th. Another Naver article reported on that article, and then a bunch did. We've been here before, where the media ran with a bit of gossip and then got clowned later.
Tumblr media
What the company SAID was:
“The schedule is yet to be finalized, and is to be announced subsequently.”
Now, JJK1 could very well drop in five weeks. But I've heard no chatter anywhere about final touches on post-production, album design, distribution plans, or promotional schedules... they don't just put the songs in a can and then press a button and it's out in the world.
Plus, a year ago, there was a strategic plan shared with investors that mentioned Q4 for him (though that was more of a road map than a firm commitment).
JK did say during last year's Festa that he'd go after Yoongi. So maybe it will happen as soon as July? That would be wonderful, because it seems like Jimin still has music to release, so maybe they can be supportive of each other's projects this summer and fall, before enlisting (hopefully at the same time!).
But I hope JJK1 doesn't go up against the Barbie soundtrack on July 21st because that has so many heavy hitters, my lord, we never catch a break!!
I will just say that JJK1 is one of the most anticipated global releases of the year. It will require a lot of logistics and likely heavy in-person promotion. So I just want to caution folks in getting too emotionally invested about a mid-July date.
It could be. It could not be. Best to wait for an official announcement, which will likely come at least 3 weeks before drop. So let's keep our ears perked after Yoongi's last concert on June 25th...
Third, some folks are reading into a lot of symbols these days. Which is fine! But I'd like to ask that we just be careful with it.
Personally, I only subscribe to a number theory if the timestamp or the numbers that the members write/say are in exact order and we can draw a straight line between that and a known special date. I do not use addition, subtraction, division, or re-ordering of numerals to get to a desired outcome. I don't know K-ARMY who do that either. But I'm not out to crap all over people who do!! It's fun to theorize!
For me, it's fun to look at number stuff the same way it's fun to read tarot cards. We tinker, we point out possible coincidences or patterns... Just please, I gently ask you to keep to theory and not fact. The last thing we want is for someone to cherrypick a screenshot and drag things out of context.
Speaking of symbols and theories becoming fanon facts...
Jimin posted old photos of him looking ADORBS with a tangerine today (which Tae helpfully commented to make sure we'd all understand it was a tangerine, lol). So Yoominners rejoice:
Tumblr media
While Jimin's social media DOES feature plenty of Yoongi (D-Day, Suchwita, possibly photos where Yoongi's shoes appear in a mirror) and TikTok dances, plus he did come on live (FROM HIS HOME!!) on Yoongi's birthday... Jimin's social media also has Hobi, Jin, Joon, and Tae on it! But predominantly it's Yoongi who shows up on Jimin's Insta. We haven't had any Jungkook on his Insta since White Day of last year--interactions with Jungkook seem reserved for WeVerse lives and posts.
Make of it what you will.
To my mind, it does seem like certain "soft" subunits were paired up since Festa of last year. (Hobi spread love to everyone, then there was Namjin's DeliciouSeoul commercials, Yoonmin's Busan [??] tourism commercial, Taekook as yet to be determined but it feels like it's coming...) So the lines between work posts and relationship posts also begin to blur a bit for fans, especially since the members all adore each other anyway...
Whether there was a strategic plan in place or not for how what I perceive as soft subunits promote, I don't know.
But meanwhile, certain other "promotions" seem to organically play out: JK sings all his members' new feature songs, but hypes Jimin's the most (on random lives he does without permission). JK came on live often, but a pattern is emerging where that typically happens when Jimin is away or busy. JK hangs out with Tae and went to the Harry concert with other members, but calls for Jimin to join him most often.
Again, it's fun to speculate what this might mean.
Meanwhile, today Joon posted a gym whiteboard workout in which the initials JK and JM appear, and so folks assume minimonikook are getting swole together. I like the mental image, not gonna lie.
Tumblr media
And hey y'all! Maybe Jimin is summoning Min Yoongi with a tangerine. Maybe Jikook did hit the gym with Joon and draw on his whiteboard. Maybe Tae did grab a bite with JK in the one day before he dyed his hair and allegedly went to Spain to film a music video. It's fun to speculate. It's what fans do.
I just want to caution folks from stating things the members do or feel as if they know for sure.
Those are cult tactics and, for me at least, the lines are starting to blur a little bit these days between Jikookers and Taekookers... in that folks are more than happy to assume that secret private couple getaway trips are pure fact, that words mumbled off screen say exactly what we want to hear, that the company has a clear-cut nefarious plot to hype specific members and bury others... and that there are hints of Signs and Wonders everywhere.
And maybe these things are shaking out and really happening. But we don't know. So I feel more comfy discussing this sort of thing when people include "I think" or "it seems" or "maybe" as we talk about it--I like to have a little wiggle room--because when I see my fellow Jikookers start to "witness truth," it comes off far more like a religion than a supportive fanbase.
I say this gently because at some point we've all done it, especially when we are in a hurry and speaking casually or joking around. I'm not judging, just cautioning.
Words matter. Believe me, I learned my lesson, and words matter.
And when it comes to Jikook, we don't really need to grasp at straws. While our boys are a lot more private these days, they still have exclusive, intimate tones and touches and interactions that we glimpse.
And the circle around them still heavily imply they come as a package deal. For example...
Fourth and finally, we got this awesome interview with Polyc, who had some wonderful things to say about Jimin and the members:
youtube
And it was sort of implied that Jimin spoke many times with Polyc about the membership tattoo over the five months that JK was getting his arm retouched--maybe while they were in the shop together? Maybe while his moon tattoos were getting done? Or maybe not.
But Polyc basically said Jimin was the one to usher each member through the process. (Which is a bit of a different impression than I got last Festa when Tae said "I will go with Jungkookie!" because back then it implied it was JK who acted as the conduit between the members and his tattoo artist, but here's some strong evidence that it was Jimin all along who bounced around ideas and made it happen and comforted each member's anxiety. Interesting.)
It's almost as though Jimin and Jungkook are the soft subunit that never gets official promo but keeps bubbling up everywhere.
Tumblr media
Okay so that was my long-winded way of pooping on the party just a little, but hopefully not enough to dampen anyone's spirits!! No one is doing fandom "wrong" -- I just want to keep our hearts and intention pure, and our actions honorable, that's all.
In conclusion: speculation is fun! But assuming is not.
And now? Please STREAM!!
Tumblr media
AND PRE-ORDER TAKE TWO WHILE YOU'RE AT IT!!
I love you all so very much! Be well, puppykitties!
Love, Roo

"Biopics of massively famous musicians are rarely very good, often because they stumble at the question of whom exactly they’re being made for. Are you making a movie for the already initiated die-hard fans yearning to see the life and times of their hero reflected back at them in exacting detail? Or is your movie a welcome mat for novices, a breezy jukebox of greatest hits aimed at cultivating new generations of fans, goosing streaming tallies and catalog sales in the process? Most musician biopics never manage to resolve this tension, in part because they’re usually also serving a third master, namely the musician’s estate, which tends to hold its own, very specific ideas about on-screen depiction.
Bob Marley: One Love, the new movie about the late reggae superstar that’s produced by Marley’s widow, Rita, along with some of his children, is a biopic that does seem to know whom it’s for, which isn’t a point in its favor. The film is directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard) and stars Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, who does his best with the role despite not really looking or sounding much like the real Marley. (Within the past four years Ben-Adir has played Malcolm X, Barack Obama, and Bob Marley, quite the triptych of historical figures.) Lashana Lynch plays Rita and steals the film in every scene she’s in, even if the movie’s script fails to elevate her character past the archetypical suffering-yet-supportive wife of a genius.
Rather than taking a cradle-to-grave approach to Marley’s life, One Love instead focuses on a single period of Marley’s career, his self-imposed exile to England in the aftermath of the 1976 attempt on his life at his home in Kingston, during which time he recorded Exodus, the 1977 LP that marked his full breakthrough into global superstardom. The film opens with the assassination attempt, after which we’re quickly whisked to London, where the film depicts Marley writing most of Exodus’ songs in a cloying series of “eureka!” moments that tend to populate movies of this kind. Snippets of Marley’s classic “Redemption Song” surface as a recurring musical motif in the film, and in one of the last scenes, we see Marley performing the song for his awestruck family in a sappy flourish that’s also anachronistic. (By most accounts, Marley didn’t write “Redemption Song” until 1979.) Periodically we’re treated to a series of flashbacks of the singer’s earlier life, a clichéd device that this movie could have used more of: Brief forays into Marley’s conversion to Rastafarianism are surprisingly well done, and a scene of a teenage Marley and the Wailing Wailers performing “Simmer Down” at Coxsone Dodd’s Studio One is the best moment in the film.
One Love is an inspirational tale about a Great Man who used music to unite the world, one that reduces one of the most consequential and complicated artists of the 20th century to a walking fount of genial aphorisms, the guy who suggested we all get together and feel all right. As such, the film indulges a decadeslong public appetite for a particular imagining of Marley that his estate now seems depressingly eager to feed. It’s been 42 years since Marley died of a rare form of melanoma at age 36, and I’m not sure there’s a musician who’s more literally iconic: Go to any commercial district in any part of the world and within minutes you’ll find an opportunity to buy something bearing Marley’s likeness. In the United States, Marley has been a staple of dorm-room walls for generations: The casual and underinformed co-optation of Marley by American bro culture has even inspired a recurring meme in which Marley’s name is erroneously affixed to an image of Jimi Hendrix.
To a certain brand of musical cynic, Marley has become the embodiment of a musician whom people own posters and T-shirts of but don’t actually listen to, which isn’t totally fair to most of the owners of those posters and T-shirts. Some of Marley’s music is still enormously popular: His 1984 greatest hits compilation Legend is currently enjoying its 820th week on the Billboard 200, a position it will likely maintain for the foreseeable future given One Love’s early, strikingly robust box-office projections. The only album that’s spent longer on the chart is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon.
But in the pop-cultural imagination, Legend has completely eclipsed everything else Marley ever released. The album has sold more than 15 million copies in the United States alone, while no other Marley LP has sold even 1 million stateside. From a purely mathematical standpoint, this would indicate that for many fans, Legend is the first and only Marley album they’ll ever listen to. I’m not sure there’s another greatest hits compilation that has played such an outsize role in the public definition of an artist.
Legend is a fine little collection, but the idea that it’s some sort of one-stop synopsis of Marley’s career is absurd. For starters, 10 of its 14 tracks date from the period of 1977–80, a four-year time frame that represents the height of Marley’s global popularity but is a relatively minuscule cross section of a staggeringly prolific, nearly two-decade-long recording career. (Five of Exodus’ 10 tracks are included on Legend, which I suspect is one reason that One Love is so invested in the album’s significance.)
This period also coincides with a time when Marley’s music seemed to take a step back from revolutionary politics, a tack that may have been driven at least in part by the aforementioned assassination attempt. The Marley canonized on Legend is not the Marley who sang “I feel like bombin’ a church/ Now that you know that the preacher is lyin’ ” or who called for “burnin’ and a-lootin’ tonight … burnin’ all illusion tonight” or declared that “Rasta don’t work for no CIA.” The dominance of Legend in the U.S. is particularly striking when one considers that Marley’s highest-selling album in this country during his lifetime was 1976’s Rastaman Vibration, which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 and includes such overtly political tracks as “Crazy Baldhead,” “Rat Race,” and “War.” Legend doesn’t include a single track from Rastaman Vibration, instead opting for romantic fare like “Is This Love” and “Waiting in Vain” and feel-good anthems like “One Love/People Get Ready” and “Jamming.” (For an excellent deep dive into the history and legacy of Legend, I recommend this article from the Ringer earlier this week.)
One Day’s Director Has No Regrets About the Movie’s Controversial Ending
Legend’s preeminence has helped turn Marley into the musical equivalent of a tourist destination, at which One Love is just one more cozy attraction. This is worse than a shame, because the real Bob Marley was one of the most remarkable musical talents of the 20th century. As a songwriter, he was so prolific that music seemed to pour out of him, a quality that has sometimes led to a naturalization of his gifts that veers into exoticizing primitivism. (One Love certainly partakes in this.) But rather than being some carefree savant, Marley was a fiercely disciplined and ambitious artist from the very beginning. He wrote and recorded his first single, “Judge Not,” in 1962 at the age of 16, and it remains an astonishing debut, an effortlessly catchy melody sung by a voice that sounds both nervous and supremely confident in a way that only a teenager can manage.
By the time he signed to Island Records in 1972 and began his ascent to international superstardom, Marley had already written a lifetime’s worth of great songs. He had a preternatural ear for hooks and crafted songs that were ready-made hit records, three-minute gems of perfectly crystalized musical ideas. As a singer, his indelible tenor rasp and thrillingly improvisational style were the byproducts of an extraordinarily well-honed sense of intonation and time. And during the 1970s, he fronted what might have been the best band on the face of the earth, grounded in the peerless rhythm section of drummer Carlton Barrett and bassist Aston “Family Man” Barrett, the latter of whom died earlier this month at age 77. (Aston’s son and namesake, an accomplished musician in his own right, plays his father in the film.)
One Love doesn’t know how to begin exploring this artist and his art in any way that even begins to be interesting. Instead it just feeds back the same sanitized and saccharine idea of Bob Marley to the same audience who has been eating that up for generations. It’s a movie about a poster. Over the end credits of One Love, archival performance clips of Marley flash onto the screen, and for a few moments we’re treated to sounds and images that are infinitely more magnetic and thrillingly alive than anything we’ve seen over the preceding 100-ish minutes. That Bob Marley, and the extraordinary body of music he left behind, is still out there for those who go listening for it, but this movie isn’t where you’ll find him."

His Family & Technology
Since Grievous was basically the kaleeshi Prometheus, making technology more accessible to his people (via theft & ingenuity), it would make sense that his compound, his personal family home, would have the best network connections on the planet.
This gave his children the honor of being the first generation of kaleesh to grow up around the wonders of tech. It was no surprise that some of his older children, in their natural inclination to copy their father, became avid scrap gremlins as he would call them. The older prodigious kids that had learned directly from dad would teach their younger siblings.
Things Grievous taught his children, purposefully &/or offhand, included welding, droid smithing, circuitry, & basic programming. All of that came in handy when he would explain how to hotwire ships or work around networks. His clan practically came prepackaged with all the skills needed to start trouble.
Before he exploded Grievous had been working on a way to mask his home network's location spurred on by a sense of impending doom. Ayaan & Igira spent several grief-stricken months holed up in their father's workshop & finishing his work. They were able to spoof their network's coordinates to a random directional buoy that just floated alone out in space along the Muunilist's trade route, since the Muunilist system was relatively nearby.
They didn't fully realize at the time how safe that kept them. Outside of a 5 click radius their network was, for all intents & purposes, some random coordinate buoy. Anyone that might come looking for their family would have to send people out looking the old fashioned way. The old fashioned way being much perilous on Kalee. This helped them become a hub of communications for anti-imperial activity in the quadrant.
Most of the children were preoccupied with the unlimited wonders of the Holonet (& that shitty Separatist version of the Holonet that the Bank tried to get everyone to use). They could learn anything! Many of the children took it upon themselves to learn Galactic Basic, since that was the language most content was in. Ayaan & Igira would stream & post videos to a very niche audience made mostly of other kaleesh. Some of the kids were very taken with sims (what Star Wars calls videogames, derived from simulations. Did I make that up?). Renj-are was the planet's foremost meme lord. Please imagine Renj-are trying to explain to Mertenzi what a meme is.
Many were enthralled by galactic art & music, cultures & machines, people & adventures presented to them from the fraying projections of various jailbroken data devices. But some were also scared. Historically, kaleesh were traditional & would literally fight to remain so for many years to come.
Like us millennials, unrestricted access to the internet did come with its drawbacks. Torrents of the galaxy's worst headlines, acts of violence on unfathomable scales, & unregulated spaces. Uniquely, & horribly, for the family it was very easy to access news about the Clone Wars as it was happening. If they were keeping up with it, as many felt compelled to do, they would often hear reports on or sometimes even see their late father burning his way across the civilized galaxy.
The entire family had an unspoken agreement: do not speak to the more sensitive mothers about it & ESPECIALLY don't tell Mertenzi. Mertenzi, of course, knew. She was not stupid. But the concept was so incredibly painful that she had to pretend it was not happening. Otherwise she wouldn't be able to go on &, dammit, she had things to do. The older children would get mixed answers on how to feel from the mothers that were keeping this secret (Bryaru, Jyada, & Weyla). That was when the pedestals their parents were on began to weather. Mom did not have the answers. They were just as hurt & confused. Even if Jyada would brag about their "giant undead metal husband" in jest, she was still quite somber about it.

On Call
An ATEEZ Yunho fanfic by AbsentCaryatid
Doing a little neighborly tech support for Yunho's grandparents who live down the hall from you comes with an unexpected benefit as they try to rekindle your childhood friendship with their grandson, and maybe something more.
2.6k words, Content note: gender neutral reader, they/them pronouns used for reader, all ages, food mention
~
One benefit of your job handling tech support by phone was that taking the early shift let you out by mid-afternoon. Crisp, fall air filled your lungs as you walked home from the train station. After a quick stop for three muffins and a specialty coffee to go, you were back in the sunshine to make the final leg of your trip home. By the time you made it to your building, the cup was empty and tossed in the trash can by the elevator bank along with the wrapper from a pumpkin muffin. If headed straight to your apartment the snack would have been unnecessary, but you were seeing friends first.
The building was a nice place for someone your age, only made possible by continuing to live with your parents. Everybody got along well so there was never any desire to move away from the only home you had ever known. The people in the surrounding units had seen you grow up and by now were a cherished extended family. That included Mr. Jeong and his wife on your floor. They were about the age of your own grandparents and helping them out from time to time was something you liked to do for the kind couple.
Earlier today when the call came in at your job with the small local internet company, it had not taken long to recognize Mr. Jeong's voice. He and his wife had been having trouble getting their video streaming service to work. Relieved to be talking to a familiar voice, he went through the steps suggested, checking other devices, and the problem was not one of internet service but presumably the smart television itself. So, you were now headed to their apartment not on behalf of your workplace but as a neighbor.
Mr. Jeong answered the door with his wife close behind greeting you with a warm hug and an exclamation how tall you were getting. In your early twenties, you had reached your full height some time ago but you recognized it as the loving words of someone who had known you since infancy and accepted the remark in that spirit.
“Thank you so much for coming over. This is the kind of help our grandson Yunho used to do for us before he moved to Seoul for his studies.” Mr. Jeong then gestured to the multi-generational family portrait on the wall from over a decade ago.
Yunho's grandmother beamed with pride. “He has a good job in music, even travels internationally.”
You remembered Yunho from his frequent visits as a child. He had been a gentle boy who laughed easily. Looking back, your playtimes together in the apartment complex's courtyard playground had probably provided a much-needed break for the older couple when hosting their grandchild. Even the best of children could still be taxing to older people as you saw for yourself when your niece and nephew visited your parents.
Returning to the present, you handed over the remaining muffins and set to work looking into the connectivity problem while your hosts brewed tea to compliment their unexpected snack. Their voices were quiet, but still carried from the kitchen. You caught scraps of “Just as thoughtful as Yunho” and “picture them together” over the bubble of the water boiler.
More familiar with technology, you recognized the problem immediately when the streaming service message popped up on the television. The account was already in use on a one device at a time plan. “Are you watching on another device right now? A desktop computer, tablet, or a phone maybe?”
They shook their heads no to that and the follow up about sharing the password with a friend. Stumped, you had Mr. Jeong log into their account from his phone to look at the details. The latest access came from a far distant city to a television the same model as their own. In a flash of insight you asked, “Did you get rid of your previous television? I remember it used to be smaller.”
They had indeed, and as you suspected it had not been reset to factory settings before being donated to the local hospital's charity shop. Rather than a glitch, the kids' shows being reported as in progress for the past month were probably being watched by a child who had no idea the account was not their family's. A simple 'logout all devices' cured the problem, and after making sure the television was logged in again and functional, you prepared to leave laden with copious thanks and a container of homemade kimchi to share with your family.
It was a surprise when you nearly bumped into a young man in the doorway, finger raised to the buzzer. After apologies on both sides you were about to head back to your door down the hall when the senior Mr. Jeong boomed, “Yunho, we weren't expecting you!” Motioning to you he added, “You remember our neighbor from down the hall of course. All grown up now, just like you.”
When Yunho blurted out your name, his fond look matched your own. Despite the changes due to maturity, it seemed you were both recognized and remembered well.
After a hug to Yunho, his grandmother exclaimed, “Oh, if we had known Yunho was on a break you would not have had to come help.”
You caught the low conversation Yunho whispered to his grandfather. “I texted her yesterday about my visit and she responded. Is her memory okay?” His grandfather shook his hands waving off the concern.
Smiling at the older woman you reassured her, “It was an easy thing, that's what neighbors are for. After all, you did so much for me as a child that it feels good to finally be able to give back.” Regretfully taking leave of the young man you tried not to stare at longingly, you managed to force yourself to go. “I'll get home now, but it truly was good to see you again, Yunho.”
“May I walk you to your door?” His request was sudden, but not unwelcome. Accepting eagerly, it only took a few steps to reach your own door on the same floor as his grandparents.
Reaching out to him for a goodbye handshake, Yunho ended up clasping your hand in his. “Hey. Um. I'm in town for the weekend. Do you mind if I take you out to eat as thanks for handling some of the grandchild tech support duties for me?”
“As much as I would like to, I don't want you to miss out on time with your family.” Watching his face fall, you amended, “Some other time then?”
The reply came quickly and with a lot of enthusiasm. “Yes. I would like that a lot.”
Parting, you watched Yunho go back to his grandparents' door, and noticed it had remained opened a crack. Perhaps it was to let him back in, but there seemed to be a shadow in the light from the window as if a person or pair had been listening at the gap.
Time passed and every other month or so there was a little task your neighbors would call on you for. Always something easy for you but daunting to someone approaching eighty years old, such as setting up a new phone or getting the hang of ripping a CD collection. Each time thanks from the grateful couple came in the form of a treat to take home to your family or teatime together where you had the chance to chat about your lives.
Yunho came up often as they praised the work their grandson did while remaining vague about his profession other than music. A recent portrait of him appeared on the wall and each time it caught your eye it occurred to you how handsome he was, but even more so in person when animated. Unaware of the smile that crossed your face when looking, it was noted by the two others in the room.
Eventually another fortunate day came around and an encounter with Yunho happened again. There you were solving the mystery of the stereo remote control failure due to the batteries suspiciously not being dead but completely absent when Yunho arrived for another visit.
He grinned to see you but chided his grandparents after a round of hellos and putting his weekend bag down. “I could have helped you with your remote. You have known all week I'd be showing up.”
With badly concealed guilty glances, the pair both claimed to have forgotten his planned visit.
“I didn't even make dinner for you, Yunho,” his grandmother fussed. “Why don't you and our neighbor go get something together while I make up the guest room for you?”
Yunho's light frustration showed in the tongue poking his cheek out. “I am beginning to feel like we are being set up.”
With a laugh you agreed. With an eye to the mischievous older couple you answered, “Perhaps we should go out once, for their sake, though I know I would not mind it myself. I have missed having you in my life.”
The way his family beamed as they sent you off made it feel like you were doing them as much of a favor as they had done you through their scheming. As they closed the door behind you, a lighthearted argument was overheard complaining Mr. Jeong was too obvious creating the problem with the remote control by removing the batteries instead of putting some discharged ones in.
Yunho exchanged a glance with you over his cupped hand as you both tried to keep from giggling. Turning serious, Yunho apologized for the way they had maneuvered you together. “I am so sorry about my grandparents. They aren't exactly subtle pushing us out the door like that.” He paused and looked down, adding, “You don’t have to go out with me just to make them happy. I understand if you don't want to be pressured.”
Not knowing him well, perhaps Yunho was just shy, but it could also have been a tactful way to get out for his own sake. When you responded, “Yes, I really want to be with you tonight. I truly like you and would enjoy a chance to get to know you better,” the grin that lit Yunho's face told you he was just as interested.
“I'm glad for the chance to thank you while spending time together. My grandparents should not keep calling you though. They can afford to hire someone, and by now my brother is old enough to take the bus here by himself, they could be asking him instead.”
Taking Yunho's arm for the walk to the nearest restaurant, you put your surprise date at ease. “You know how it is with old people, they’ll accept the help from the people they want. My family went through this with my own grandparents. They really don’t need things often, anyway. It’s just so easy to call me since I’m already in the building.”
Once out the door and onto the street you were so invested in talking to your companion that you missed the looks he was getting from passerby. “Your grandparents said you are in music. Did you leave for Seoul to become a teacher, or are you in an orchestra or something like that? I still remember when you played the piano at your grandparents' place one time.”
Yunho gave a subtle smile. “My work is a little different. I danced and sung my way into an idol group, if you can believe it. If it does not sound too vain, we are actually pretty successful.”
“An idol? Wait, you are the Yunho in TVXQ?” Not really attuned to popular music, some trivia about groups and member names had entered your awareness, but belatedly you realized that group had been around since your childhood so not likely the same Yunho.
Yunho covered his mouth again as he laughed. Thankfully he did not seem embarrassed by your mistake. “With the shared name your confusion is understandable. My group ATEEZ has not been around as long as TVXQ but we work hard to have the same amount of name recognition one day.” He reached out as if to hold your hand as you had done walking to the playground so many years ago then seemed to stop himself. “Even though we lost touch once I moved away from Gwangju for my studies, you have stayed on my mind.”
This was unexpected. You had always wondered what had become of your friend, but were too timid to ask his grandparents. Still, little tidbits had been dropped when you socialized with the neighbors and they always spoke of Yunho with pride. It was underselling it a lot however with the simple description of him working with music. Biting your lip, you offered to change dinner to carry-out or a street stall. Trouble raised by an idol seen on a date was the last thing you wanted to do to your friend.
After holding the restaurant door open, Yunho trailed you inside, marveling how the little mom and pop operation remained untouched by the decade or so since his last visit. The lady busy at the register waved to take a seat anywhere. Recognizing you as a regular once she looked up, she nodded and smiled to see you had come with a companion.
Yunho seated you first then took a chair himself. Gazing gently into your eyes, he confirmed that being seen together was fine by him if it happened. “My agency KQ Entertainment does not have a dating ban. If I am lucky enough that you are willing to see more of me after this we can discuss how much privacy you would like. As much as I would want to tell the world I have a partner, I could not protect you from scrutiny, even more so in a long-distance relationship.”
He had leaned in during the conversation and now Yunho straightened up with a start. “Of course, I am getting ahead of myself. It remains to be seen if you are as into me as I am you.” Nervously looking back at you, the radiance of your smile hinted at the success of the date already.
It would be several hours of enjoyable conversation before Yunho made it back to his grandparents' apartment, after dropping you off at your door with a chaste kiss to the cheek. Worried they were in trouble with their grandson for being so forward, instead they were met with the news that Yunho was taking you out again if his grandparents could spare him. They happily agreed and congratulated him.
In bed that night while Yunho slept in the other room, they whispered cheers to each other for bringing the young people together. Not only did they dream you might join the family, in the short term they stood to benefit since Yunho might visit more often with the extra incentive of coming back to Gwangju for a partner. He might not spend as much time with them on his trips as he used to, but if the new relationship led to more it was well worth it. By his age, Yunho's parents had already married. While the elderly couple did not know a lot about life as an idol, they hoped Yunho's work and fans would not get in the way of living a full life off the stage on a schedule that worked for him.

Nothing is real or correct.
I am making headway on the ARC amp, but it made me think.
Decades ago a rather pompous man created an audio magazine because only he knew best. Actually come to think of it that has happened several times. I am currently talking about "The Absolute Sound" from just outside of New York City in the 70s.
His concept was two fold. The sound of any component should be judged only in comparison to live performances in Jazz clubs and concert halls or some similar site. It sounds like a good idea but is it even a little realistic? The second fold was to not take advertising from manufacturers as that is a conflict of interest. That fell away after a few years as it takes money to produce a real printed magazine. A friend and I were early subscribers and devoured each new issue. I know better now.
In a symphony concert every seat in the place is slightly different. I have sat in several concert halls and listened to lots of music from different seats. It is not the same at home on the system. I find my home system sounds better than live performance in general. I guess I cannot afford the best seats, but recording engineers tend to place mikes in the best places. Yes that big drum in the back is impressive live, but the rest....
In a Jazz club all the sound you get comes through a PA system of not necessarily high end quality. And be real, you are there for the performance not the audio or should be.
In a Stadium Rock event I need ear plugs as it is always so FN loud.
So comparing a system to live is not truly valid. Whatever you get is a matter of taste and luck
Consider the rather long chain of custody the sound endures from musician to your ears.
Start with the venue. Most recordings are done in purpose built studios with usually extensive sound treatments. Likely totally unlike your listening cave. How the musicians are set up and what equipment they use is very dependent too. How many times have you seen singers and instrumentalists in isolated boxes or behind barriers in a studio so the mike they use does not conflict with the ones around them. How natural is that?
Or how about recording a Piano. You always see several mikes around pianos for Jazz or solo or small group performances. I only have two ears solidly fixed to either side of my head.
Next microphones and mixing consoles all have characteristics and a voice. The type and brand and technology of the microphone all are adjusted and tuned. The sound in the mix is adjusted to get just the right effect. Accuracy, what's that?
One of my favorite audiophile albums is Cowboy Junkies "Trinity Sessions" Nice big room with natural sound, the band set up around a single 3D microphone using the gear they use on tour and basically no mix. WYSIWYG. But if you were there it would have sounded different than the recording as you would not be where the mike was. Still likely as accurate a recording as you can get.
Another is Steely Dan's Aja. Every track is fiddled and massaged and made to sound just so coming out of the studio speaker. Very clean and totally unreal.
A very good album is Diana Krall live from Paris. Listen to the group and "see" where the mix has placed each musician. Then look at the photo of the group on stage. Not the same is it?
Then the fun really starts. Is it analogue tape and which brand of machine Ampex or Studer and which vintage? Is it DSD digital or lowly PCM? Which processor! All those have a voice.
And now jump into your media. How is the product distributed? Vinyl rules! Well that's my thing. Which master remixed the master, what plant pressed it?
Both streaming and hard copy digital are valid and can claim lower noise and distortion usually. But those are just numbers.
Each electronic device has a voice some more subtle than others. The higher you go the clearer and cleaner it gets or should at least.
Thinking of phono pickups there are so many methods and products. It is really impressive how linear and consistent those things are in spite of all that. Many writers go on and on about velocity versus displacement and when that happens I know they are full of it. It turns out that blind tests show that what some call clarity and detail is just a slightly different frequency response. Or even a resonance in a convenient place. A few db here a few db there makes all the difference.
Still I find it remarkable that I can extract as much information off of a flat disk as I do with my modest three figure phono pickup. At the very base of the issue is like choosing a microphone. People have favorites.
In the digital domain you are depending on microchips. A DAC may have exotic this or that attached to them, but all the chips come from one factory or another made by people in bunny suits. Discrete components cannot keep up to digital speeds so the chips rule.
And we have not even got to preamplifiers and amplifiers. Tube verus solid state you have to choose a tribe. Both are best and neither is. Frankly it is the place you choose the type of distortion you like. The flaw with every tube amplifier is the output transformer. They all need them and they have a major hit on the sound. The flaw with every solid state amplifier are the gain devices and the feedback used to tame them. Tubes use feedback too!
Designs that avoid or just minimize feedback just force you to accept an acceptable distortion.
As I am bouncing between the tribes now recall that tube amplifiers are rated at 1% distortion. Transistor amplifiers at about ten times less. (Sometimes tens times ten times ten less.) Much better, but not better. It is the sound of the distortion that makes the difference and the preference. Some people like different stuff.
Oh time for the worst offender, the speakers. The frequency response is pathetic compared the quality of the signal going in. Why fret about an amplifier being plus or minus 0.2 db when the speaker is plus or minus 6 db. And the room has modes and reflections and well unless you are rich enough to build very special room you just have to hope your brain gets fooled.
And that is it really. Your brain wants to be fooled. If you listen to any system long enough you get used to it and adapt. If you only listen to single ended triodes into horn speaker you come to think that is the way things should sound. And you will find a tribe to support you like a cult.
It is a flawed process from beginning to end. But it lets you experience brilliant music and performances when you want to. With care and attention to detail you can solve the puzzle in many different ways.
And no it is never like a live performance, its maybe better.
There is no best.

Holiday 2023 Outlook for Consumers and Marketers
Inflation has been on the decline for over a year, and in June it fell to 3% - the lowest rate recorded since March 2021. Coupled with this is a steady rise in consumer confidence, which in June hit a high not seen since early 2022. And even though these trends are a step in the right direction, economic uncertainty is still expected to play a large role in the purchasing decisions being made this holiday season. Price-conscious consumers will look to cut costs by shopping the sale section, using coupons, downsizing holiday celebrations, and simply buying fewer items. With so many brands competing for share of wallet, it won’t be enough to differentiate on price alone. Instead, brands should make a concerted effort to secure share of mind right now so that they are top of mind during the holidays and beyond.
At a high level, the best way to accomplish this is twofold. First, it’s critical to embrace an audience-first, channel-agnostic mindset so that you are reaching the right audience at the right time. Once you’ve found your audience, it’s important to meet them with strong messaging that is centered on brand value. In this article, we make the case for programmatic channels as effective marketing avenues for expanding brand reach and, ultimately, nurturing long-term brand favorability (i.e., when the holidays roll around).
Changing the Narrative on Programmatic Advertising
Let’s start with some housekeeping - when we talk about programmatic, we’re referring to a method for buying ads on specific channels, including Display, Video, Audio, and Digital Out of Home. Within each channel, there are myriad ways to target audiences based on interests, behaviors, device, location, and demographics.
“When you bring up programmatic to a performance marketer, you might see their eyes glaze over - they’re imagining annoying banner ads placed on low-quality inventory that don’t drive results,” says Erin Morningstar, Director of Strategy at New Engen. This attitude is pervasive and, according to Erin, informs the two primary reasons that brands are wary of investing in programmatic advertising: concerns about brand safety and equity, and limitations of measurement. These reservations are understandable, especially if you believe that programmatic is strictly used for generating brand awareness. But Erin explains that "programmatic is more than banner ads or dynamic product retargeting - it’s the turnkey option for accessing the wealth of ad inventory outside of walled gardens and paid search."
Teka Phan, Associate Director at New Engen, adds:
It’s important to understand that programmatic buying is performance buying. It powers actionable insights into how this media drives actions and conversions across the entire marketing funnel.
The reality of digital marketing in 2023 is that brands can’t successfully grow on the Meta-Google duopoly alone (the aforementioned walled gardens). Instead, it’s essential to meet your customers, both existing and prospective, where they are. This begs the question - where are they?
Media Consumption is Changing (Rapidly)
The channel landscape is more diverse than ever, and consumers are increasingly discovering brands through podcasts, in-app ads, and music streaming services. eMarketer predicts that, by 2024, 20% of all time spent consuming digital media will come from audio. What’s more, CTV already constitutes more than 25% of the time consumers spend with digital media, yet accounts for less than 10% of digital ad spending in the US. To put this in context, Meta receives roughly 20% of ad investment despite representing just 7.6% of all digital media consumption.
This is precisely why we, as an agency, believe that brands can win on channels like digital audio, CTV, and yes, even display. It’s true that direct-buying channels are often part of a mature media mix for many brands. But the benefit of embracing a programmatic-first approach is that it allows marketers to keep an eye on performance at scale while maintaining a direct buy approach for branding-first initiatives.
The Benefits of Investing in Programmatic
Thought leaders at New Engen have identified four primary benefits to investing in programmatic:
Control: Despite some preconceived notions, programmatic ad buying affords marketers tighter control over targeting, placements, and optimization. This level of control enables measurement testing in the form of geo holdouts, known audience split tests, and platform lift tools. Such exercises are critical to proving the value of channels outside of last-click.
Flexibility: Budgets can be seamlessly moved around across channels and publishers on a daily or even hourly basis. In contrast, brands buying directly from multiple publishers are beholden to more rigidity driven by campaign minimums and contract terms.
Value at Scale: Not only are CPMs generally cheaper when buying programmatically, but DSPs often provide access to a variety of inventory types, formats, and audiences - in turn, this variation powers the development of diverse, mature programs. The inventory is virtually endless and continuing to grow as more platforms and publishers open their inventory to exchanges.
Actionable Insights: By investing in programmatic activations, brands can quickly gather learnings about what kind of inventory and formats are driving performance. While this may not be a unique function of programmatic channels, it’s differentiated by actionability - “Many people see programmatic as an upper funnel, impression-buy only. The value is that we can measure action (conversions, traffic, etc.) and then act on it in real-time,” Teka explains.
How New Engen Clients Have Found Success With Programmatic
Programmatic buying has driven strong results for New Engen clients, with brands finding synergy between their programmatic programs and other marketing channels, including Paid Search and Social. Below are two New Engen case studies that exemplify the benefits of incorporating programmatic into your marketing mix.
Unlocking Incremental Site Traffic Through CTV
In Q4 of 2022, our client, an outdoor apparel brand, tasked us with driving incremental site traffic through new channels. We first identified CTV as their target audience's top digital destination, then we built three rich consumer segments: in-market for outdoor apparel gear, recent competitor site and store visitors, and recent outdoor equipment purchasers. Ads were served across a variety of CTV platforms like Roku, Hulu, Pluto TV, and the Discovery Channel, and optimized based on insights from real-time incrementality studies.
Under this approach, our exposed audience was 2.5X more likely to visit the brand’s site than our non-exposed audience. What’s more, we achieved a 1.9X lift in checkouts. In other words, the brand was able to reach and capitalize on a more qualified audience through its CTV initiative. To top it all off, we identified a previously under-served audience as a standout performer - a learning that is pivotal to refining the program downstream.
Proving the Revenue Impact of West Marine’s Digital Video Awareness Media
In order to validate the direct revenue impact of digital video awareness media, we designed an audience holdout test for our client, West Marine. We activated precision media buys across CTV and YouTube in Florida, a key growth market for the brand. The audience segments included prospecting, retargeting, and lapsed customers, and were compared against national performance.
By the end of the two-week period, the target audience delivered a 1.7X lift in online lapsed user transactions and a 4.6X lift in in-store transactions. Omnichannel ROAS also improved, and West Marine measured a 1.4X increase in year-over-year omnichannel revenue from new-to-file customers.
Programmatic Advertising Best Practices for Holiday 2023
Whether you're bought into programmatic after reading this or just curious to learn more, we want to leave you with our recommendation for what to do next. Here's what New Engen leaders say are the most important steps to successfully incorporate programmatic into your Holiday 2023 strategy:
First and foremost, set clear objectives
→ Identifying what you want to accomplish and learn from your programmatic initiative is the most important step, as this will inform how to design your program. Before you can drive awareness with a new segment or increase AOV within an existing one, you’ll need to understand your audience - then, you can tailor your channels, targeting, and creative parameters to their specific needs. Once you’re aligned on the plan, stick to it.
Set expectations with your team
→ Know that every channel should have its own goals and benchmarks. Don’t track your programmatic performance against your Paid Search campaigns, because these are inherently different channels and so are their outcomes. Performance will even vary across, Podcast, CTV, and Display given their different mediums.
For example, a consumer who searches for “shoes” is more likely to make an immediate purchase because they are actively searching for the product. Programmatic channels, on the other hand, expose audiences to products before they are ready to purchase. So if that same consumer sees a CTV ad for a pair of shoes before they start their search, there’s a likelihood that they will have been influenced before their final purchase decision.
Launch early
→ We anticipate that the holiday season will stretch across Q4, and consumers will start their holiday planning and shopping early - you want to be there when they’re in the consideration stage. As a rule of thumb, you should be in market at least 4 weeks prior to your peak shopping period.
Anticipate different scenarios
→ As an agency practice, we create decision playbooks with our clients going into critical peak periods that allow our teams to move quickly when optimizing campaigns.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K was released on October 31, 2017 and is the latest streaming device on the market. This device is a huge step up from the previous generation of streaming devices, offering support for 4K resolution, Dolby Atmos audio, and Amazon's new Alexa Voice Remote. The device has already been praised by many as the best streaming device available, and it is easy to see why. The first thing that you notice about the Fire TV Stick 4K is the increased screen resolution. 4K is becoming increasingly popular in the home theater world, and the Fire TV Stick 4K is one of the first streaming devices to offer support for it. The increased resolution means that you'll be able to enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows in crystal clear detail. In addition to the increased resolution, the Fire TV Stick 4K also supports Dolby Atmos audio. This technology creates a more immersive sound experience that makes it feel like you are in the middle of the action. The final major upgrade from the previous generation is the inclusion of Amazon's new Alexa Voice Remote. This remote has the ability to control all of your Fire TV Stick 4K's features using voice commands. Simply say "Alexa, play Stranger Things" and the show will start playing. You can also use the voice remote to search for specific content, control your smart home devices, and much more. The X543M is a laptop that’s well-suited for everyday use. It has a large touchpad, so you can quickly get around the screen and use apps with ease. The stylish design also helps it blend in at home or the office.
The X543M features a 15.6-inch display, powered by a 7th-generation Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB DDR4 memory, and 256GB SSD storage. ASUS X543M, with ASUS SonicMaster and ASUS Audio Wizard, is designed to give you the very best audio experience. The digital amplifier and powerful speakers use a professional-grade codec to ensure precise audio encoding and decoding. This Windows 10 laptop also features up to NVIDIA® GeForce® MX110 discrete graphics, making it an ideal daily computing platform. The device is held together by a metallic body frame that’s painted in proper gold, while the keyboard deck is covered with plastic. This gives it a strong build and allows it to survive accidental drops, but bends pretty easily despite being quite rigid. Moreover, the palm rest area isn’t as thick as we would like, which can make typing for long periods uncomfortable. By the way, we shouldn’t skip telling you that the keyboard deck is pretty bendable, even to the lightest of touches. Generally, this won’t be a problem but it can be annoying sometimes.
The ASUS X543M also carries a pretty standard design. The X543M houses a 15.6-inch Full HD display which comes with an anti-glare layer, has an IPS panel supporting full HD resolution, and uses LED backlighting technology. It also has support for 100% sRGB colour coverage and can reproduce 12 million colours. For its price range, the display offers excellent viewing angles and great brightness levels too, but washout may occur in some cases if you observe it at certain angles under bright light.
The configuration of ASUS X543 was equipped with a TN panel that has a fast response time and a Full HD resolution. Unfortunately, it lacks comfortable viewing angles, it has a low contrast ratio and modest colour coverage due to its TN panel. Nevertheless, it uses PWM at all levels except for the maximum, which reduces the negative effect of the flickerings produced by this display.
If you're looking for a laptop that is in a good range, Asus X543 has the price that will make it a great bargain. The processor and operating memory installed on this machine offer enough power to run multiple applications simultaneously or do some demanding tasks such as editing photos or videos. There’s also an opening at the bottom part of the notebook that allows you to connect some portable external speakers or a subwoofer through it.
