“The tools of conquest do not necessarily come with bombs and explosions and fallout. There are weapons that are simply thoughts, attitudes, prejudices to be found only in the minds of men. For the record, prejudices can kill, and suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless frightened search for a scapegoat has a fallout all of its own for the children, and the children yet unborn. And the pity of it is that these things cannot be confined to the Twilight Zone.”

Naked Alibi (1954)
"Look, Joe, I like you, but I don't know what's got into you lately. Maybe you're working too hard or something, but you're getting yourself a rough reputation. Now, take a tip: change your tactics, or you're liable to find yourself without a job."
#naked alibi#film noir#american cinema#1954#jerry hopper#lawrence roman#j. robert bren#gladys atwater#sterling hayden#gloria grahame#gene barry#marcia henderson#max showalter#billy chapin#chuck connors#don haggerty#stuart randall#paul levitt#joseph mell#richard beach#decentish noir concept with a strong cast but hamstrung by its reactionary politics; it's a classic 'cop knows bad guy is guilty but has no#proof so resorts to extralegal means and psychological torture to break him'. the film is clearly positioning us to sympathise with#Hayden's frustrated cop but his methods are so objectionable that you end up (ymmv) bristling for Gene Barry's killer figure#ah yes Gene Barry; mr adventurer himself. this is the first thing I've seen him in since finishing that itc series and altho this was made#a good two decades earlier it's still hard to shake the image of the wizened playboy who earned the enmity of an entire cast and crew#Hayden and Grahame are both very good‚ even tho her role is really just a lazy mishmash of the parts that had catapulted her to fame in the#previous couple of years (most notably 1953's The Big Heat) but the love triangle down Mexico way which makes up the second half of this#film is still somehow less interesting than the (ethically frustrating) police procedural it begins as. a tinally confused and somewhat#unsuccessful film but with some great setpieces including a final rooftop chase that I'd bet money influenced the opening of#Hitchcock's Vertigo a couple of years later

The Kolchak Report :The Night Stalker 1972
Tumblr media
Welcome to the Kolchak Report where I am gonna review every episode of Kolchak the Night Stalker, but before I do that Im going to talk about the two TV movies that lead to the series ,starting with 1972's The Night Stalker
Hasbeen investigative reporter Carl Kolchek (DArren McGavin ) is investigating A mad killer known as Janos Skorzeny(Barry Atwater ) is going around draining women of blood in Las Vegas ,when he starts to realize theymight be dealing with an actual vampire
SO in the 70's the vampire started being seen as a kind of a quaint idea ,so a few writers thought "What if a vampire attacked in modern times",so we got stuff like Salems Lot and Blacula but I think the best of them is Night Stalker .Its a pretty realistic take on a vampire .Like all the tropes are there(The crosses, the stakes, the fangs) but the feel is very much that this is a murder mystery/thriller where the villain happens to be a vampire ,and that groundedness makes it legit spooky .Barry Atwater is legit chilling ,with an imposing physical presence and acts more like a cornered animal then a person .However he isnt the main focus, the focus is on the utter denile by the police and politicians to admit there is a real vampire going around
Cast is solid including Ralph Meeker as the token buddy of Kolchak ,Claude Akins as the bullheaded sheriff ,CArol Lynley as Kolchaks girlfriend, and the always awesome Simon Oakland as Kolchaks boss Tony Vincenzo, who would go on to be the main supporting character for Kolchak going forward
The standout however is Kolchak himself played by the great Darren McGavin.....Im gonna see if I keep thios thought to the end of the series, but Kolchak maybe one of my favorite horror heroes .Hes an obnoxious blowhardt but he belives in the truth ,and as a newsman his job is to lay out all the facts,no matter how absurd they maybe and who doesnt want them said .When the supernatural is staring him in the face ,he rolls with it and has to do what it takes to take it on
This is a great TV horror movie ,and a perfect watch around Halloween time .The film has a clear ending so if you wanna watch it as a stand alone, you can find it on youtube
This is only the begining of Kolchak ,as next up we shall talk about its sequel the Night Strangler

books I read in 2023
I read 240 books in 2023, which is lower than my total books read than the past few years. But it'd be ridiculous to be bothered by it because, hey, I still read 240 books!
I set myself a goal of trying to read more out of my comfort zone this year. I wanted to read 30 non-romance books, 25 physical books, and 10 non-fiction books. By the end of the year, I'd read a total of 54 non-romance books, 62 physical books, and 27 non-fiction books. I'm hoping to continue in this vein in 2024.
Other stats - for fun -
My most-read author was Cassie Mint
I gave out 32 5* ratings
My most-read genre was (of course) romance, 120 of which were contemporary
I owned most of the books I read
I read the most books in June, with 34 books read, followed by August, with 25 books read
My most read trope was forced proximity, followed by hate-to-love
So, below is a list of the books I read this year. Rereads are italicised, favourite reads are in bold.

The Loneliness of the Black Republican: With Leah Wright Rigueur
COMMENTARY:
George Wallace separated the Huey Long "nigger, nigger, nigger" Dixiecrat/Charismatic  wing of the Democrat Party from the Democrat Party and  captured 13% of the vote in 1968. That 13% is what Nixon and Lee Atwater designed the Southern Strategy around., and their communication strategy was to use code language that meant "nigger, nigger, nigger" into their public conversation and still claim to be color blind in the Party of Lincoln/Eisenhower Republican kind of way.
Which is where the legacy of Rush Limbaugh is being advanced by Tucker Carlson. Rush used words like "Democrat" Liberal Title 9 and so on to me a linguistic register for "nigger, nigger, nigger",, generally, as the vamp, but even more specifically to calling any white male in politics a "nigger lover". In the South, at the time the John Birch Society was organizing itself around the Goldwater campaign, for a white boy to call another white boy a nigger lover was a challenge that could easily involve knives back in the day. Right now, the push is on to pollute the meaning of woke to mean "niger lover" and that is causing a certain element of confusion among Biden voters that is part of the fog that right wing disinformation has generated since 1964. but this is where the current  universal interest of the DC['s clack community associated with the Benning Road Beauty Parlor is embrace woke = nigger lover as the basis of Hip Hop and Home Rule.
This is where the 9 Day Cullender Sgt Wilhelm can introduce to your pod cast as a new structure of community policing.
I am related to Woodrow Wilson but I am from the Juneteenth side of the family who the Jim Crow Racist side of the family call "nigger lovers" when they aren't in the room. As an Army brat growing up in Hampton VA., i avoided civilian society as much as possible, I could organize my social life around Ft Monroe and never deal with civilians.  Tom Ewell calling Atticus Finch a nigger lover happened to me a couple of time and all you can do is wipe off your glasses.
Anyway, I have been a fan of Home Rule from the get-go. Among other things, I thought there was a neglected market for community banking East of the River and developed a training program for junior officers at American Security Bank to do SBA loans ieast of Rock Creek Park and south of Pennsylvania Avenue. I presented the program to the loan committee but left the bank before I could implement it if I got a green light. I left the bank because I had learned what I needed to to take the nect step in creating Plan B and getting a life. My thrust to the bank was business opportunity and not social equity: they didn't need to realize that the bank was being woke.
Here's my point" Jesse Helms was one of the most woke Senators in office in 1995. It surprised me to discover that, but he is what I mean when I say you are more woke than either Barry or Michele. I had a chance to work with his staff on a program I was promoting connected to the 9 Day Calendar and witness the flow of black constituents who went through his office smiling and content with their Senator. Senator Helms and his staff were closet nigger lovers going about a progressive agenda in North Carolina that continues to deliver on the promise of the Declaration of Independence in spite of the January 6  Republics fucking things up.
Abraham Lincoln was woke. Organize the RINOs, never Trumpers, and Jack Kemp Republicans around being woke and restore the adult leadership of the House of Lincln  to the GOP as the party of woke nigger lovers.
