The year that was...
“Slippery slope. I carry a spare shirt, pretty soon I’m carrying spare pants. Then I’d need a suitcase. Next thing I know, I’ve got a house and a car and a savings plan and I’m filling out all kinds of forms.” —Jack Reacher (in Lee Child’s 2007 novel Bad Luck and Trouble)
For close to a year, I have been fortunate to be part of the Saturday morning conversazione that takes place in the office of Dr. S R Ramaswamy (SRR), who is more than a mentor to me. In one of the early meetings of 2023, SRR gave me his personal copies of two Jack Reacher novels (by James Dover Grant, who writes under the pseudonym Lee Child) and added with a smile, "I must warn you, these are addictive!"
Tumblr media
A few days after that, I was going to be on a long train to Pune and had taken the novel with me. Even before we crossed the Karnataka border, I had finished reading the novel and cursed myself for not having brought the other one too (which was a result of my underestimation of my own reading speed). As soon as I came back to Bangalore, I raced through the other novel. When I returned the two novels to SRR, he gave me more. It had been years since I had read fiction and given that my day job involves reading, writing, design, and publication, I had forgotten the art of reading for pleasure. This gesture on SRR's part rekindled that spark. The flipside was that I started finding films and web series tiresome!
I mostly read Jack Reacher novels this year and what fascinated me the most (besides the intricate plots, value conflicts, and the edge-of-the-seat twists and turns) was the universal appeal of a character like Reacher who lives like a monk and fights like a tiger; even in the materialistic West the allure of a man who is detached and driven by a strong sense of dharma is irresistible. And that gives me hope.
#
Soon I will hit forty. Probably my best years are behind me but I like to believe that they are yet to come. To augment this belief, I lay out my plans for 2024 before getting into my recollections of 2023.
I have three short-term goals, which I wish to complete in the next six months: i. Organise my library ii. Simplify my wardrobe iii. Consolidate my finances and four lifestyle goals that I wish to continue through the year: 1. Exercise daily 2. Read more, and more varied books 3. Play the violin more 4. Avoid sugar and fried foods at all costs
Some of the books in the pipeline for this year are: A R Krishnasastri’s Kathāmṛta, a new edition of Bhāsa’s Svapna-vāsavadatta, D V Gundappa’s Jīvana-dharma-yoga translated by Raghavendra Hebbalalu and Sreelalitha Rupanagudi, Volumes VII and VIII of DVG’s Art Gallery of Memories, S R Ramaswamy’s Silhouettes of Excellence, Sripriya Srinivasan’s book on Pallava history for high school students, minor poems of Nīlakaṇṭha-dīkṣita, and Jayadeva’s Gīta-govindam, among others.
I'm also working on a few exciting projects with cousin Dr. Chandra Shekhar (a short stories anthology), my college classmate Sudarshan K A (on financial wisdom), and with my friends Ganesh Bhat Koppalatota and Neelakanth Kulkarni (curating the best of Kannada literature), and I hope that at least a few of these see completion by end of the year.
#
I was lucky to have a front row seat as the following books unfolded through the course of the year: Three volumes of DVG's Kannada writings in translation (Contemporaries of Vidyaranya, his writings on the two epics of India, and an anthology of his essays on poetics), Vols. V and VI of the Art Gallery of Memories by DVG, Śatāvadhānī Dr. R Ganesh's Kṣāttra: The Tradition of Valour in India, and Dr. L Subramaniam's Festival Beyond Borders, among others.
I was able to facilitate the publication of three books by family members: my mother's booklet of life-lessons titled Song of my Soul, my father's monograph on The Amazing Human Mind, and my great-uncle (Late) Sri S Rangarajan's mammoth 648-page memoirs titled It Happens as Ordained.
The highlight, however, was a little book that I co-wrote with Dr. Ganesh titled The Essential Sanatana Dharma.
Tumblr media
In addition to working on a few books in 2023, I was also invited to give lectures on a variety of topics, some of which were at the insistence of Dr. Arathi V B who has often magnanimously offered me opportunities that are far beyond my ken. If my calculations are right, I must have given no less than eighteen lectures this year. Friends like Madhulika Srivatsa, Sagar Mehta, and Vani Anur invited me to their homes to give lectures to their family and friends, which were highly rewarding.
Tumblr media
I had the singular fortune of addressing a large number of school children, teachers, young parents, devout Hindus, et al. on topics as varied as life skills to the essentials of Sanātana-dharma; from the importance of history and heritage to world musical genres (at an elders' enrichment centre); from Indian Knowledge Systems to the Art Gallery of Memories (series of lectures at the Gokhale Institute of Public Affairs); and on the Artha-śāstra, Mahābhārata, Bhagavad-gītā, and Śrīkṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta.
#
For more than two decades I have been attending the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival (LGMF) organised by my guru Dr. L Subramaniam (along with his wife, Smt. Kavita Krishnamurti, who is the director of the festival); for some years, I was also active in the organising committee of the festival. Each edition of the LGMF has been a historic event and 2023 was no different. The upcoming tour is no less exciting with a remarkable orchestra from Kazakhstan visiting India.
Tumblr media
Some of the other memorable events that I attended in 2023 include the third edition of Madanotsava organised by my good friends Nirupama and Rajendra, the eightieth birthday celebrations of Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam organised by Drishti Arts Centre, the fifth World Coffee Conference (thanks to my friend Ananth Bhatt), and a lovely eighty-fifth birthday celebration of my great-uncle Sri R Vasudevan that included a superb concert by the musician-surgeon of our family, Dr. Mukund Jagannathan.
#
Despite some challenges, the home situation was stable. My mother and my grandmother moved to an apartment next to my place and my father and brother regularly visit. I became one of the Trustees of our family trust and that means greater opportunity to help the community. I have also been involved in some consolidation of my finances so that I won't have to worry about money after 2024. I echo the sentiments of Jack Reacher in Gone Tomorrow (2009) — “I'm a rich man. To have everything you need is the definition of affluence.”
#
There are times when our family and friends perform an unexpected act of kindness that leaves us fumbling for words. My grandmother's younger sister, Smt. Shanti Rangarajan, aged 89, made a trip all the way from Chennai to Bangalore (with her daughter Deepta) to spend time with my mother on her 66th birthday, given that she was just recovering from her surgery and was home-bound.
Tumblr media
When I was in Mumbai earlier this year, I happened to ping my BMS College classmate Anshuman Borah, who emigrated to UK some years ago. He immediately wrote back saying that he was in Pune to sell his flat. I had been in Pune that very morning; distraught at having missed catching up with him, I called him up to berate him for not telling me earlier. He immediately said, "I'll come to Mumbai tomorrow. Just send me your location and I'll be there to pick you up." Sure enough, the next morning he took a taxi from Pune all the way to Mumbai just to meet me. We had a nice lunch and spent five or six hours before he took a taxi back to Pune. (And there were times in college when we have shared a jhal mudi costing Rs. 10 because we had run out of cash!)
Tumblr media
Anu and Chandra (technically my mother's generation but more like friends/cousins to me) generously offered me a carte blanche to pursue whatever projects I wish to, without fretting about the monetary implications. Their gesture has inspired me to work even more towards a larger cause, especially in the fields of culture, literature, music, and education, which are of common interest to us.
Prof. L V Shanthakumari has been a mentor-guru-adopted grandmother to me and many other friends. Earlier this year, she was visiting her younger son Sri Niranjana who lives across the town from her, in faraway Marathahalli. Our ancestral house in Halasuru is almost the mid-point between her house and her son's house, so I requested LVS madam to consider visiting us for lunch. She graciously agreed and visited us with Niranjana, who incidentally lived in the same neighbourhood many years earlier! My family and I were thrilled to host LVS madam and we spent a lovely afternoon together.
My cousin Arun was slated to visit India in August along with my aunt and uncle. I was planning to borrow my father's car so that I could take Arun around. Right at that time, my good friend Chandrashekhar told me, "I just bought a new car and there's the old one languishing in my place. Just take it and use it for as long as you want." Thanks to Chandru, I was able to drive around Arun and later had reliable transportation for myself, especially during some of the busy months of the year. After relying on public transport for more than a year, this came as a real boon.
#
My good friend Arjun Bharadwaj always teases me of excessively indulging in what he playfully dubs "Eating-Outing-Meeting." While I am an introvert by temperament, I often step out for these E-O-Ms for a dose of enrichment. Outside of my books and my music, I find nothing more enjoyable than a meaningful conversation with friends and savants.
It has been my great fortune to have come in contact with so many greats of our time—and in some cases, even dine with them and travel with them.
One of our Saturday morning meet-ups took place on Church Street with SRR taking us (Vighneshwar Bhat, Sandeep Balakrishna, Arjun Bharadwaj, and me) to Select Book Shop, which was started by a friend of his. Later he took us out to lunch and simply refused to let any of us pay.
Tumblr media
Ambi (my uncle, Dr. Koti Sreekrishna) visited India earlier this year and even stayed with me for a few days. I had a great time with him, discussing everything from the ridiculous to the sublime—often through the course of a meal in a nearby restaurant. I also had the chance to drag two of my friends (Arjun and GS) to meet Ambi and his elder brother Kanna (my uncle, Sri K Srinivas) at their ancestral house. The conversations, mostly revolving around the the great epics of India, were memorable (with some of it secretly captured on video and clandestinely posted on Facebook by Ambi).
Tumblr media
My cousin Arun visited India in August and stayed with me. It had been years since we had met and there was so much to talk about. It was really inspiring to see his focus and his ability to grasp new ideas. I introduced him to a bunch of my friends and we all had a memorable time. Cousin Anita could not visit and was sorely missed, but she had just had a baby (my second nephew, Jayanth).
Arjun and I visited Mysore to meet Dr. S L Bhyrappa, who graciously invited us to lunch with him. Following that, we proceeded to Pandavapura to meet Mr. Anke Gowda, who has the largest personal collection of books that I have seen (over 1 million books). We were thrilled to visit his library as he enthusiastically showed us around. He has been collecting books for some seven decades with his meagre salary, driven by intense passion and devotion to literature.
Tumblr media
Through the course of the year, in addition to the regular meet-ups with my friends, gurus, and family, I had the opportunity to meet a host of interesting people: Sri Prafulla Ketkar (Chief Editor, Organiser), Sri Shivaswami (Bhagavad-gītā scholar), Dr. Manohar Shinde (Founder, Dharma Civilization Foundation), Dr. Shekhar Borgaonkar (my father's college classmate and old friend), Dr. Kanniks Kannikeswaran (musician-composer-educator), and the dedicated people who run Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra at Hagaribommanahalli, among others.
#
It is a co-incidence that the year began with a trip to Ellora and just as 2023 came to an end, during the course of our Madhya Pradesh road-trip, the first destination was Ellora. It was wonderful to visit that puṇya-kṣetra twice in a calendar year.
Tumblr media
In addition to visiting Solapur, Sambhajinagar, Pune, Mumbai, Karwar, and Chennai, I went to Valparai (Tamil Nadu) for our annual boys' trip, with more friends joining the fray:
Tumblr media
I spent the last days of the year on the road: traversing 3,800+ kilometres (Bangalore-Ellora-Maheshwar-Indore-Ujjain-Vidisha/Sanchi-Udayapur-Khajuraho-Bedaghat-Bangalore) in nine days with five of my friends and a shoe-string budget.
Tumblr media
Among the many highlights of the trip was visiting Ahalyabai Holkar Smarak at Maheshwar.
Tumblr media
To see her humble dwelling and to contrast that with her unparalleled achievements was an inspiration. These are the real heroes of our land and it is a sin to forget them.
#
Sri C R Sathya, the grandson of Prof. A R Krishnasastri and a remarkable space scientist (and writer) in his own right died earlier this year. He had been a great support during the time I co-translated The Essential Mahabharata. Not many people know that the gentleman on the right side of this iconic photo by Henri Cartier-Bresson is C R Sathya:
Tumblr media
A few other greats who breathed their last in 2023 include Sri Siddeshwar Swamiji; the great gamaki Sri Chandrashekar Kedilaya; Wayne Shorter, the legendary jazz saxophonist; Sri B K S Varma, the painter par excellence; and iconic filmmaker Sri K Viswanath. I had the great fortune of meeting and interacting with both B K S Varma and K Viswanath some years ago.

The changes around us end up affecting us in some way, directly or indirectly, unless of course we are really cut off and have isolated ourselves from society. In this vein, it might be instructive to broadly look at some of the events from 2023.
India has marched forward under the visionary leadership of Sri Narendra Modi, who has never failed to impress with his tireless striving for a better future.
India is now the most populous country with a host of internal problems, largely fuelled by predatory ideologies, be it the clashes between the Kuki and the Meitei or the Nuh violence or even the denigration of Sanātana-dharma, which is the most inclusive religio-philosophical system in the world. Despite this and some of the self-inflicted wounds to the economy, the country witnessed the manner in which challenges were masterfully met, be it the organisation of the spectacular G20 or the rescue of 41 miners trapped in the Uttarakashi tunnel, be it seamlessly shifting to the new parliament building or sending Chandrayaan III to the moon.
After the demonic attack that took place on October 7th, 2023, the world is slowly realising the danger of the bloodthirsty death cult masquerading as a religion. More and more countries are rejecting the pseudo-liberal ideologies of the left and are instead moving far right, which is also dangerous in its own way. Coupled with this, we are unsure of the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the future of humans. And somewhere amidst all this chaos, unknown men are quietly doing their work. And that brings me a great deal of peace.
#
Thanks for reading this far, and with this I wish you and your family a wonderful new year! I hope it will be filled with joy, good health, prosperity, and moments to cherish. May your dreams come true!
— Appendix
I wish to share some of the fantastic accomplishments of a few people in my circle. It is, as always, an ad hoc list that I have prepared on the spur of the moment. I might have missed out some but those that I have listed are certainly notable:
Brahmin Genocide is an important topic researched by Sri Balaji Mahalingam (who writes under the pseudonym Asi) that brings to the fore an injustice that has pervaded our society in the last couple of centuries and must be immediately rectified if Hinduism is to survive. The first edition of the book was sold out in just a few months and he is now working on the second edition.
The seventh century CE Sanskrit play Bhagavad-ajjukam was documented by Nirupama and Rajendra with support from Sudha Murty, Śatāvadhānī Dr. R Ganesh, Praveen D Rao, Arjun Bharadwaj, et al.—see the Introduction and the complete play (with subtitles).
Bhāratīya Kṣāttra Paramparā (Hindi translation by Prof. Dharmaraj Singh Vaghela) Earlier this year, when the book Kṣāttra was released, I gave a copy of the book to my uncle Prof. Vaghela. The very next day, he called me and said that it is an important book which must reach the Hindi heartland and offered to translate it into Hindi. Dr. Ganesh immediately gave his consent. In a matter of months, he finished the translation, which is now appearing on www.prekshaa.in as a series and will soon be published in book form.
My good friend and former colleague Arjun Bharadwaj has come out with two remarkable books this year: the first, titled Nayana-Savana (co-written with Śatāvadhānī Dr. R Ganesh), which is a creative appreciation of some of the major productions of the legendary Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam and the second, titled Indian Perspective of Truth and Beauty in Homer’s Epics, which is worthy of a D.Litt. no less.
S R Ramaswamy's latest work titled Sāhitya Sānnihitya is an anthology of book reviews and writings on literature.
Saṃskṛti is a reprint of a charming little book on culture with essays by littérateurs including Devudu Narasimha Shastri, A N Murthy Rao, A N Krishna Rao, Masti Venkatesha Iyengar, and C K Venkataramayya.
Prekshaa Pratishtana has brought out a lovely introductory video that summarises its vision and objectives. They continue to publish many books every year and maintain an ad-free online journal (www.prekshaa.in) with authentic content on Indian heritage for one and all.
My cousin Arun Prasad continues to do remarkable work with Ambuda, the online digital library for Sanskrit.
The best of Śatāvadhānī Dr. R Ganesh's writings in Kannada have been compiled in two volumes with the title Rāga-bhāratī.
Dr. G Sudesh Kumar, a close family friend, recently authored a coffee-table book titled History of Sri Parakala Mutt.

Important Facts about Computer Motherboards
Tumblr media
If you ’are a computer user, or indeed a PC builder still, looking for your first computer and you don’t know much about  MOTHERBOARD, then this article is for your information on motherboards.
DEFINE MOTHERBOARD
CPU, GPU, memory,  storage, and further – everything is connected to the motherboard in one way or another. As similar, you can suppose it as the ‘  backbone ’ of a PC; a bustling centre of electrical pathways acting as links between all the hardware in your system.  The motherboard function is to let factors communicate with each other at lightning speed. For illustration, a CPU sends data to a GPU for rendering over the motherboard’s machine( its circuitry).
LOW- END and HIGH-END MOTHERBOARD
By itself, the motherboard is just a circuit board. It’s an essential part of all computers, but a flashier motherboard is not inescapably going to net you a faster frame- per second like an high- end GPU would.  So selecting the motherboard for a computer can either be trouble free or complicated while building a computer. Some people are not too worried about the motherboard, they view it just as a foundation for the more essential hardware to make upon. But as the motherboard’s part is so important, some treat it as the equal of any other element.
MOTHERBOARD SCALABILITY
It’s obvious that you do not regularly upgrade the motherboard so you should invest properly into it the first time itself. Throughout a gaming generation, you'll probably install some redundant RAM and upgrade to a brisk GPU – while the motherboard stays the same.  As similar, the motherboard you choose now can determine the upgrades you’re suitable to make in the future. You could pick out the cheapest motherboard to save some price in the then and now.  But when it comes time to upgrade, it may not have the places, anchorages and features you need, ending up going you more in the long run.  A motherboard should have enough DIMM, SATA and M.2slots for more expansion and PCIe Gen4 to gain the fastest performance out of compatible GPUs and SSDs. Motherboard should have enough of four-pin case fan connectors .These are some of the questions you should be asking yourself when choosing a motherboard, not only if it’s compatible with your present CPU.  Motherboard upgrade also is a complicated process. While RAM may take a few minutes at most to a niche, upgrading a motherboard requires you to rebuild your entire PC effectively.
MOTHERBOARD STABILITY
High-end motherboard has robust voltage controller modules, capacitors for toughened power delivery. This is essential if you’re looking to seriously overclock your computer and push it to the absolute limit. As an advanced-end motherboard lets factors run at their fastest, you could say it laterally affects performance.  For most of the computer users, manual CPU overclocking is a thing of history. Rather than probing into a motherboard’s memoirs and fine-tuning frequentness by hand, automatic boosting does the heavy lifting on ultramodern PCs.  It is no point in buying a high-end, overclocking-concentrated motherboard to use automatic boosting. You’d be better off saving some money on the motherboard and buying a brisk CPU or GPU rather for further conspicuous earnings.  Fortunately, Intel motherboards and AMD motherboards are resolved into three chipset orders. Galvanised Autobiography A Work in Progress The story of this interesting girl captured poetically in skin (*), a beautiful memoir of strength, peace, protection, freedom, inspiration, overcoming challenges and fear. As a kid she enjoyed very much, climbing up a particular mango tree at her grandma’s. even though her friends teased her, she found true solace up there on its branches. deep in her mind ever since, she begun associating the tree with strength and inner peace. Being very close to grandma and having fond memories off her, she associates her with being a protective spirit. every single day grandma cast a kolam pattern, at the porch outside her entrance. Freedom she only truly felt for the first time on her bike which she got on her 18th birthday. There’s so much of the truth that has been revealed yet much that will never have a special meaning to anyone else. a work in progress! evolving every moment. with every thought, with every idea, with every memory! such is life... a very intimate journey! beautiful isn’t it? * = “alchemic tattoo by veer hegde” Tattoo Composed for Asha by @veerhegde @eternalexpression.tattoo #tattoosaremagic #alchemictattoo #workinprogress #veerhegde #eternalexpression #tattoobangalore #tattooindia #subliminaltattoo #tattootherapy #mentalhealthawareness #thestrengthwithin #mentalhealthbangalore #bangalore #nofilter https://www.instagram.com/p/CmtJLtxLdFs/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The conclusion of any book is important, as it is the final impression that the reader takes away. This is especially true for a memoir, as the reader is hoping to gain a deeper understanding of the author's life. In my conclusion, I want to reiterate the main points of my memoir and leave the reader with some thoughts to consider.
First and foremost, I want to emphasize that my memoir is not a work of fiction. Every event and conversation that is recounted in these pages actually took place. This is important to remember, as it puts everything into perspective. The second point I want to make is that the decisions I made in my life were not made in a vacuum. They were influenced by the people and circumstances around me.
Finally, I want to leave the reader with some food for thought. We all face difficult choices in life, and there is no right or wrong answer. The important thing is to make sure that we are true to ourselves and our values.
If you're looking for a luxurious and comfortable place to call home, Aakriti Housing is a great choice. Green Carpet
Green carpet is an idiom for winning a larger sum of money through a windfall.
I wish to win many Green Carpets.
Father’s Last Wish
Before my dad died, he made s statement and in it he said: ‘I want my body to be buried in my mother’s tomb’.
I was puzzled at this statement.
Then a colleague of his said: ‘it is my father’s mother who gave him a body and in death I want to give it back to her’
My father’s mother died very early in life and he was always in anguish about her.
Bangalore Memoir
I was traveling to Jakarta and I had to board my flight from Bangalore. Before boarding, I became heavily drunk. The police came and arrested me and took away 100$ of money. They manhandled me and, in my finger, there was a metal insertion and that changed its position and I was in a great deal of pain. Then my boss rebooked my ticket. I went back to Cochin and I was received by my sister and wife. Very cunningly they took me to an asylum and I was given an injection there and I passed out. Morning I woke up and to my sadness I realized that I was in an asylum. The male nurses were rude and used foul language. They also gave me beatings for no cause. The asylum run by bastard Catholics became a shit-hole for me for two months. I lived there with great pain and misery. I pray that my fate should happen to no one.

Shoba Narayan is a writer who once lived with her husband and kids in Manhattan. Then she moved back to India and ran into her milk lady’s cow in her apartment elevator. Literally.
In her memoir The Milk Lady of Bangalore, Narayan gives the outsider a deeper look into what at first appears to just be a strange (and seemingly backwards) cow-obsession in India. You’ll laugh at first -- and then find yourself nodding in all seriousness when you realize that, yes, indeed, modern India thrives on these sorts of ineffable spiritual complexities.
Written in two parts, Milk Lady first reveals Narayan’s own curiosity and then the ways she grows to understand her culture through a thorough examination of the role of cows in India. Genetics, diet, and ayurveda -- Indian herbal medicine -- all help determine the sacred aspects of a cow’s byproducts, the dung, urine and milk that can both cure and bless.
The cow ends up serving as a lens through which readers get to explore the true inner workings of India, including its cultural diversity (not everyone is warm to cow dung) and a beautiful and unexpected bond between a returning expat and her milk lady.

[1]
'I don't want to die,' Anita Williams aka Bangalore thought to herself as she faded into the darkness slowly, memoirs and happy life moments ran through her head, show casing the good the bad and even when she joined the games and became a legend. soon a rush of air filled her diaphragm and she was pulled to the surface of a sea of memories,
fluorescent lights casted a soft green glow to everything around her the white room she was resting in casted a mint green back into her eyes, the smell of chemicals rushed through the nostril's wrinkling her nose; she slowly sat up when Makoa Gibraltar, and Ramya Parekh came into the room
"my god mate, your alive! the cure worked" Ramya otherwise known as rampart in the games hugged the woman who sat in the hospital bed, "it was touch and go there, Anita. but i am glad you are okay now Brudda"
Anita sighed and tightened the hug around the woman who hung over her shoulders before the woman drew back and patted her shoulder playfully. "have you seen loba yet?" Ramya then asked Anita with big friendly smile plastered over her lips
"oh she just woke up for petes sake!" Gibby shoved the smaller woman softly "what i want some bow-Chicca-pow-wow", before looking to the solider. Anita thought back how she watched loba fall through the ships floor Icarus. how she thought about her brother. god what if she lost loba blinking back tears, a smirk played upon dry lips
"hah, girl..better check that door". Anita Sighed, "...we're just friends"
Ramya and Gibby gave each other a look then chuckled to themselves, anita raised a brow
"what?"
"oh nothing Brudda, but you better 'check that door',"
Gibby nodded firmly before he drifted out the door with Ramya bounding behind him as they laughed and spoke loudly Anita watched the two walk the corridor,
[2]
the next few weeks, loba seemed distance cold and curt to her text messages, and usually Anita would get a reply to her 'you up?' text messages; but no, nothing and it made her wonder what Anita did wrong, what made it worse was that with this chasm that opened between Loba and her.
she noticed the closeness between the new Legend Kairi Imahara, or "Valkyrie". they hair end twirls the stop and fawn the look loba shares with Kairi seems almost like a lover, stirring deep and unsettling a feeling formed in the bottom of Anita's Gut and she truly had no idea how to handle it and she could not pinpoint why it was there, Anita truly did not feel this type of way towards couples. maybe it was because of the look of distain that Anita was shown often by Loba.
Kairi would smirk and sneer behind friendly remarks that truly had a underlying meaning to each word the girl said. a snake in a corpse of titan, fitting. with the absence of loba Anita found herself taking company in Wraith. while her and Anita Got in a squabble over her knife. and Anita confess the Hatred she had for the headcase. and it mad her more upset. she rather look for her brother with someone she liked or even octane for heavens sake.
[3]
it was well after midnight, the games had finish several hours before. Anita sat in her typical black Tank and cargo pants. sipping whiskey neat watching the legends mingle around her. mirage flirting with wraith, Wattson and Crypto resting in a nearby booth. before her head rotated to the corner of the paradise lounge seeing loba and Valkyrie.
her heart leapt into her mouth, nearly choking on the drink she gingerly had sipped on "whoa hey!" Elliot Witt called out handing her a cloth, dabbing the white spot grumbling curses in huffed breathes. Mirage followed anitas gaze to what made her choke seeing Valk and Loba flirting in booth sitting too close to one another it seemed that they were rather chummy.
"Ah, i see. that must sting" Anita shot a glare to Elliot, who whistled and throwing the cloth she gave back to the man over his shoulder, "what- you were Like really Really close with loba- I MEAN like as friends right? uh- maybe more- but i recall that being you a few.. few months-", Anita's eyes narrowed, amber hues glaring into Elliot's soul who visibly grew uncomfortable; "well like you two flirted all the time it and didn't you guys even-"
"Stop talkin',"
"yeah ok-okay i'll do that"
anita threw a dollar bill to the counter bill and stood from the stool shooting a glare over to the two chummy buddies in the bar, and left to find another bar. one where this feeling that made her ears go hot with rage.

LGBTQ Book & Film Recommendations
Hello! As someone who tries to read widely, it can sometimes be frustrating to find good (well-written, well-made) LGBTQ+ works of literature and film, and mainstream recommendations only go so far. This is my shortlist.
Some caveats: 1) I have only watched/seen some of these, though they have all been well-received.
2) The literature list is primarily focused on adult literary and genre fiction, since that is what I mostly read, and I feel like it’s easier to find queer YA fiction. Cece over at ProblemsOfABookNerd (YT) covers a lot of newer releases and has a YA focus, so you can check her out for more recommendations.
3) There are a ton of good films and good books that either reference or discuss queer theory, LGBTQ history and literary theory. These tend to be more esoteric and academic, and I’m not too familiar with queer theory, so they’ve largely been left off the list. I do agree that they’re important, and reading into LGBTQ-coding is a major practice, but they’re less accessible and I don’t want to make the list too intimidating.
4) I linked to Goodreads and Letterboxd because that’s what I use and I happen to really enjoy the reviews.
Any works that are bolded are popular, or they’re acclaimed and I think they deserve some attention. I’ve done my best to flag potential objections and triggers, but you should definitely do a search of the reviews. DoesTheDogDie is also a good resource. Not all of these will be suitable for younger teenagers; please use your common sense and judgement.
Please feel free to chime in in the replies (not the reblogs) with your recommendations, and I’ll eventually do a reblog with the additions!
BOOKS
> YOUNG ADULT
Don’t @ me asking why your favourite YA novel isn’t on this list. These just happen to be the picks I felt might also appeal to older teens/twentysomethings.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe
Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo - poetry.
Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender - trans male teen protagonist.
Red, White & Royal Blue
Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda
The Gentleman’s Guide To Vice And Virtue
The Raven Boys (and Raven Cycle)
> LITERATURE: GENERAL
This list does skew M/M; more NB, trans and WLW recommendations are welcomed!
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara. One of the most acclaimed contemporary LGBTQ novels and you’ve probably heard of it. Will probably make you cry.
A Single Man by Christopher Isherwood. Portrait of a middle-aged gay man.
Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh. M/M affair, British student high society; definitely nostalgic for the aristocracy so be aware of the context.
Call Me By Your Name by André Aciman. It’s somewhat controversial, it’s gay, everyone knows the film at least.
Cronus’ Children / Le Jardin d'Acclimation by Yves Navarre. Winner of the Goncourt prize.
Dancer From The Dance by Andrew Holleran. A young man in the 1970s NYC gay scene. Warning for drugs and sexual references.
Dorian, An Imitation by Will Self. Adaptation of Orscar Wilde’s novel. Warning for sexual content.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. Two wlw in the 1980s. Also made into a film; see below.
Gemini by Michel Tournier. The link will tell you more; seems like a very complex read. TW for troubling twin dynamics.
Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin. Another iconic M/M work.
Lost Boi by Sassafras Lowrey. A queer punk reimagining of Peter Pan. Probably one of the more accessible works on this list!
Lie With Me by Philippe Besson. Two teenage boys in 1980s France.
Maurice by E. M. Forster. Landmark work written in 1914. Also made into a film; see below.
Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. An expansive (and long) novel about the story of Cal, a hermaphrodite, by the author of The Virgin Suicides.
Orlando by Virginia Woolf. Plays with gender, time and space. Virginia Woolf’s ode to her lover Vita Sackville-West. What more do you want? (also a great film; see below).
Oscar Wilde’s works - The Picture of Dorian Gray would be the place to start. Another member of the classical literary canon.
Saga, vol.1 by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples. Graphic novel; warning for sexual content.
Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinburg. An acclaimed work looking at working-class lesbian life and gender identity in pre-Stonewall America.
The Holy Innocents by Gilbert Adair. The basis for Bertolucci’s The Dreamers (2003). I am hesitant to recommend this because I have not read this, though I have watched the film; the M/M dynamic and LGBTQ themes do not seem to be the primary focus. Warning for sexual content and incestuous dynamics between the twins.
The Animals At Lockwood Manor by Jane Healey. Plays with gothic elements, set during WW2, F/F elements.
The Hours by Michael Cunningham. References Woolf’s Mrs Dalloway. Probably a good idea to read Virginia Woolf first.
The Immoralist by André Gide. Translated from French.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline MIller. Drawing from the Iliad, focusing on Achilles and Patroclus. Contemporary fantasy that would be a good pick for younger readers.
The Swimming Pool Library by Alan Hollinghurst. Gay life pre-AIDS crisis. Apparently contains a fair amount of sexual content.
What Belongs To You by Garth Greenwell. A gay man’s coming of age in the American South.
> LITERATURE: WORLD LITERATURE
American and Western experiences are more prominent in LGBTQ works, just due to the way history and the community have developed, and the difficulties of translation. These are English and translated works that specifically foreground the experiences of non-White people living in (often) non-Western societies. I’m not white or American myself and recommendations in this area are especially welcomed.
All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson. The memoirs and essays of a queer black activist, exploring themes of black LGBTQ experiences and masculinity.
A People’s History of Heaven by Mathangi Subramanian. Female communities and queer female characters in a Bangalore slum. A very new release but already very well received.
Confessions of a Mask by Yukio Mishima. Coming-of-age in post-WW1 Japan. This one’s interesting, because it’s definitely at least somewhat autobiographical. Mishima can be a tough writer, and you should definitely look into his personality and his life when reading his work.
Disoriental by Négar Djavadi. A family saga told against the backdrop of Iranian history by a queer Iranian woman. Would recommend going into this knowing at least some of the political and historical context.
How We Fight For Our Lives by Saeed Jones. A coming-of-age story and memoir from a gay, black man in the American South.
In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Another acclaimed contemporary work about the dynamics of abuse in LGBTQ relationships. Memoir.
Girl, Woman, Other by Bernardine Evaristo. Contemporary black British experience, told from the perspectives of 12 diverse narrators.
> POETRY
Crush by Richard Siken. Tumblr loves Richard Siken, worth a read.
Diving Into The Wreck by Adrienne Rich.
He’s So Masc by Chris Tse.
If Not, Winter: Fragments of Sappho, trans. Anne Carson. The best presentation of Sappho we’re likely to get.
Lord Byron’s works - Selected Poems may be a good starting point. One of the Romantics and part of the classical literary canon.
Les Fleurs du Mal by Charles Baudelaire. The explicitly lesbian poems are apparently in the les fleurs du mal section.
> MEMOIR & NONFICTION
And The Band Played On: Politics, People and the AIDS Epidemic by Randy Shilts. An expansive, comprehensive history and exposure of the failures of media and the Reagan administration, written by an investigative journalist. Will probably make you rightfully angry.
How to Survive A Plague: The Inside Story of How Citizens and Science Tamed AIDS by David France. A reminder of the power of community and everyday activism, written by a gay reporter living in NYC during the epidemic.
Indecent Advances: The Hidden History of Murder and Masculinity Before Stonewall by James Polchin. True crime fans, this one’s for you. Sociocultural history constructed from readings of the news and media.
Queer: A Graphic History by Meg-John Barker. It’s illustrated, it’s written by an academic, it’s an easier introduction to queer theory. I still need to pick up a copy, but it seems like a great jumping-off point with an overview of the academic context.
Real Queer America by Samantha Allen. The stories of LGBTQ people and LGBTQ narratives in the conservative parts of America. A very well received contemporary read.
The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson. Gender, pregnancy and queer partnership. I’m not familiar with this but it is quite popular.
When Brooklyn Was Queer by Hugh Ryan. LGBTQ history of Brooklyn from the nineteenth century to pre-Stonewall.
FILMS
With films it’s difficult because characters are often queercoded and we’re only now seeing films with better rep. This is a shortlist of better-rated films with fairly explicit LGBTQ coding, LGBTQ characters, or made by LGBTQ persons. Bolded films are ones that I think are likely to be more accessible or with wider appeal.
A Single Man (2009) - Colin Firth plays a middle-aged widower.
Blue Is The Warmest Colour (2013) - A controversial one. Sexual content.
Booksmart (2019) - A pretty well made film about female friendship and being an LGBTQ teen.
Boy Erased (2018) - Warning for conversion therapy.
BPM (Beats Per Minute) (2017) - Young AIDS activists in France.
Brokeback Mountain (2005) - Cowboy gays. This film is pretty famous, do you need more summary? Might make a good triple bill with Idaho and God’s Own Country.
Cabaret (1972) - Liza Minelli. Obvious plug to also look into Vincent Minelli.
Calamity Jane (1953) - There’s a lot that could be said about queer coding in Hollywood golden era studio films, but this is apparently a fun wlw-cowboy westerns-vibes watch. Read the reviews on this one!
Call Me By Your Name (2017) - Please don't debate this film in the notes.
Caravaggio (1986) - Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton are in it. Rather explicit.
Carol (2015) - Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are lesbians in 1950s America.
Clouds of Sils Maria (2014) - Hard to summarise, but one review calls it “lesbian birdman” and it has both Juliette Binoche and Kristen Stewart in it, so consider watching it.
Colette (2018) - About the bi/queer female writer Colette during the belle epoque era. This had Keira Knightley so by all rights Tumblr should love it.
Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) - Lesbian love in 1920s/80s? America.
God’s Own Country (2017) - Gay and British.
Happy Together (1997) - By Wong Kar Wai. No further explanation needed.
Heartbeats (2010) - Bi comedy.
Heartstone (2016) - It’s a story about rural Icelandic teenagers.
Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party (2015) -  Queer teens and religious themes.
Je, Tu, Il, Elle (1974) - Early Chantal Akerman. Warning for sexual scenes.
Kill Your Darlings (2013) - Ginsberg, Kerouac and the Beat poets.
Love, Simon (2018)
Lovesong (2016) - Lesbian and very soft. Korean-American characters.
Love Songs (2007) - French trio relationship. Louis Garrel continues to give off non-straight vibes.
Mädchen In Uniform (1931) - One of the earliest narrative films to explicitly portray homosexuality. A piece of LGBTQ cinematic history.
Maurice (1987) - Adaptation of the novel.
Midnight Cowboy (1969) - Heavy gay coding.
Milk (2008) - Biopic of Harvey Milk, openly gay politician. By the same director who made My Own Private Idaho.
Moonlight (2016) - It won the awards for a reason.
My Own Private Idaho (1991) - Another iconic LGBTQ film. River Phoenix.
Mysterious Skin (2004) - Go into this film aware, please. Young actors, themes of prostitution, child ab*se, r***, and a lot of trauma.
Orlando (1992) - An excellent adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s novel, and in my opinion far more accessible. Watch it for the queer sensibilities and fantastic period pieces.
Pariah (2011) - Excellent coming-of-age film about a black lesbian girl in Brooklyn.
Paris is Burning (1990) - LANDMARK DOCUMENTARY piece of LGBTQ history, documenting the African-American and Latine drag and ballroom roots of the NYC queer community.
Persona (1966) - It’s an Ingmar Bergman film so I would recommend knowing what you’re about to get into, but also I can’t describe it because it’s an Ingmar Bergman film.
Picnic At Hanging Rock (1975) - Cult classic queercoded boarding school girls.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019) - By Celine Sciamma, who’s rapidly establishing herself in the mainstream as a LGBTQ film director. This is a wlw relationship and the queer themes are reflected in the cinematic techniques used. A crowd pleaser.
Pride (2014) - Pride parades with a British sensibility.
Rebel Without A Cause (1955) - Crowd-pleaser with bi coding and James Dean. The OG version of “you’re tearing me apart!”.
Rocketman (2019) - It’s Elton John.
Rent (2005) - Adaptation of the stage musical. Not the best film from a technical standpoint. I recommend the professionally recorded 2008 closing night performance instead.
Rope (1948) - Hitchcock film.
Sorry Angel (2018) - Loving portraits of gay French men.
Talk To Her (2002) - By Spanish auteur Pedro Almodóvar.
Tangerine (2015) - About trans sex workers. The actors apparently had a lot of input in the film, which was somehow shot on an iPhone by the same guy who went on to do The Florida Project.
The Duke of Burgundy (2014) - Lesbians in an S&M relationship that’s going stale, sexual content obviously.
The Gay Deceivers (1969) - The reviews are better than me explaining.
The Handmaiden (2016) - Park Chan-wook makes a film about Korean lesbians and is criminally snubbed at the Oscars. Warning for sexual themes and kink.
The Favourite (2018) - Period movie, and lesbian.
Thelma And Louise (1991) - An iconic part of LGBTQ cinematic history. That is all.
The Celluloid Closet (1995) - A look into LGBTQ cinematic history, and the historical contexts we operated in when we’ve snuck our narratives into film.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) - Adaptation of the YA novel.
The Neon Demon (2016) - Apparently based on Elizabeth Bathory, the blood-drinking countess. Very polarising film and rated R.
The Perks of Being A Wallflower (2012) - Book adaptation. It has Ezra Miller in it I guess.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) - No explanation needed, queer and transgressive vibes all the way.
They (2017) - Gender identity, teenagers.
Those People (2015) - They’re gay and they’re artists in New York.
Tomboy (2011) - One of the few films I’ve seen dealing with gender identity in children (10 y/o). Celine Sciamma developing her directorial voice.
Tropical Malady (2004) - By Thai auteur Apichatpong Weerasethakul. His is a very particular style so don’t sweat it if you don’t enjoy it.
Vita and Virginia (2018) - Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West biopic
Water Lilies (2007) - Celine Sciamma again! Teenage lesbian coming-of-age.
When Marnie Was There (2014) - A Studio Ghibli film exploring youth, gender and sexuality.
Weekend (2011) - An indie film about young gay love.
Wilde (1997) - It’s a film about Oscar Wilde.
XXY (2007) - About an intersex teenager. Reviews on this are mixed.
Y Tu Mama Tambien (2001) - Wonder what Diego Luna was doing before Rogue One? This is one of the things. Warning for sexual content.

Back again with #recently read: My latest round-up selecting books I’ve enjoyed lately.
Real Queer America by Samantha Allen. Travel memoir by a trans woman who went on a road trip through the South after the 2016 election to visit vibrant pockets of LGBTQ+ activism and community in America’s red states.
A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine. An ambassador from a small space station overshadowed by a massive empire replaces her murdered predecessor... with a 15 years out of date version of him uploaded in her brain. Includes bodysharing technology, a culture with Byzantine and Central American inspirations, and sending covert political messages via poetry.
Syria’s Secret Library by Mike Thomson. Nonfiction by a reporter about a secret underground library maintained by anti-regime civilians in Darayya, Syria. The writing is occasionally kind of simple or overly saccharine but he’s not a novelist.
The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin. Set on a continent with frequent quakes and volcanic activity that spawn long-lasting winters (fifth seasons) and where ‘orogenes’ who can control geothermal energy are both necessary and feared. Very clever use of narration and point of view, and one of those books where the last line makes you go “holy shit”. Zoomed through the rest of the trilogy and I highly recommend it, but it contains a *lot* of dark themes, so be aware.
A People’s History of Heaven by Mathangi Subramanian. The story of five girls trying to prevent their slum in Bangalore from being bulldozed. Focuses heavily on solidarity between women especially in situations where women are not always valued and the refusal of the marginalized to be erased.
