Grey’s Anatomy Has a Toxic Workplace Problem in Season 18 - aka why everyone keeps bullying Meredith into staying in Seattle
(Why is no one talking about this???)
Read my grey’s anatomy meta on ao3! Same format but I would love hear your thoughts
I can’t believe my biggest gripe with Grey’s season 18 is… fair labor practices? I mean, it’s usually more soap-opera stuff. Dead fiances come to life, disappearing girlfriends, surprise pregnancies, etc. etc.
But I keep seeing the same subtle problems arise. I’m going to call this the Webber-Bailey-Fox problem, because it seems that the ‘leaders’ of Grey Sloan Memorial are the most egregious and at fault. In short, why on earth do Webber, Bailey, and Catherine act as if the entire fate of this hospital hinges upon Meredith? Why won’t they let her leave for Minnesota?
She’s a famous surgeon who works there, not a goddess. The hospital isn’t going to magically disappear into dust and shadows if she moves to another state with her kids. If other key characters who are part of the Grey’s universe (Cristina, Alex, Jackson, Arizona, April, Callie, etc.) are allowed to move away and find new jobs, why do her bosses keep guilt-tripping Meredith into staying?
In general I’d give Season 18 a B+. In general my rule about TV is ‘keep watching if you’re having fun. Quit if you’re not!’ and I enjoy spending each Friday morning watching last night’s episode of Grey’s. I thought that many parts of S18 (like the introduction of Kai! Or letting us explore Bailey’s burnout and Maggie’s marriage to Winston!) were handled delicately. But at the same time, Webber, Bailey, and Catherine 一 mostly Webber and Bailey, obviously, since they’re series regulars 一 are just being manipulative toward Meredith.
Again and again on Grey’s, we see management whining whenever people don’t agree with them. In season 2ish, when Bailey considered switching from general to pediatric surgery, Webber was consistently whiny and cruel to her. He acted like she was throwing her career down the drain for changing. Bailey also sort of did this when Jo switched to OBGYN, and when Ben decided to become a firefighter instead of continuing his residency.
The Grey’s timeline is a bit wonky since seasons 1-3 take place during intern year (which I assume is 12 months), but I’d wager Meredith’s literally been working at this hospital for 16 years, give or take. She had her children here. She lost her husband. She dated and re-realized what it means to find love after loss. Is it so wicked and awful that she might want to move to Mayo Clinic instead of growing old and (pardon my pun) grey in Seattle?
During all of season 18, Webber and Bailey are just awful to Meredith. They treat her like a traitor and whine that she isn’t being ‘loyal’ to the hospital where she grew up (reminder: Meredith literally grew up here. Ellis trained at Seattle Grace and there are flashbacks of Meredith as a 6-year-old walking the halls.) If it’s indeed true that Meredith has lived much of her entire life in this one building, why on earth do her bosses keep manipulating her into staying? This is a textbook hostile work environment and it’s so puzzling that no characters in the Grey’s universe are acknowledging it.
A workplace culture where your bosses call you ‘disloyal’ for wanting to submit your 2 weeks’ notice is… not good. No wonder Meredith wants to leave if Webber and Bailey, who are supposedly her old friends and mentors, are so willing to turn on a dime and snarl insults at her.
Don’t even get me started on this Accreditation Council Lady in the finale, who acts as if Meredith’s departure is a key reason why the hospital is unstable. Sure, I assume Mer is good at bringing in fundraising money and good PR (and I know Council Lady feels that she’s been lied to so she’s lashing out), but Mer’s just the chief of general surgery. There are plenty of good general surgeons who can take her place.
And I know, the show is called Grey’s, not Pierce’s or Shepherd’s Anatomy. We all know Meredith is important. But it feels cruel to tell Meredith that she matters so that we can guilt-trip her into staying at Grey Sloan instead of moving away. When does it end? Will Meredith be tied in one place and forced to work at the hospital forever just because they can’t afford to lose her? What kind of awful workplace is this, where you aren’t allowed to leave because people seem to need you too badly? It’s kind of like a desperate boyfriend or girlfriend who refuses to let you break up with them because “they’ll fall apart without you.”
This is an incredibly toxic position from Webber and Bailey, and it makes me dislike them. They’ve been written so oddly this season, acting as if they’re gods who are above criticism and flaw. Their inability to recognize their own flaws is actually the reason they keep hurting the people around them.
So the Minnesota plotline may have its flaws (I’ll get to that later! What on Earth does Mer actually do at Mayo?) but it’s Meredith’s right to leave if she wants to. It’s not like she’s signed some lifetime contract or a blood oath tying her to one place. She’s successful, she’s excited to travel and spend more time with Nick, and the city of Seattle is always going to be haunted in some part because of Derek’s death. Why shouldn’t she get to leave? Why are Webber, Bailey, and Catherine allowed to intimidate and jeer at Meredith? Why do they feel entitled to her time and work? It’s starting to feel like Bailey and Webber are just bad bosses. If you can’t handle the fact that your employees may get a better offer and leave you, you shouldn’t be an employer.

The Lover’s Gambit
Edmund Pevensie X (She/Her) Reader
based off the tumblr post, “invented a chess opening called the lovers gambit where you toss the pieces aside and start kissing your opponent on the table.”

"What's wrong with your brother?"
"A multitude of things." Peter replied, his head bent over 'Bailey & Love's Short Practice of Surgery'. "Now go away."
Y/N, obviously, did not go away. She was too curious- and, besides, the pictures in his medical book was very gruesome and fun to see.
"He's been very- weird."
"Yes, since he was born." He had no dislike towards the girl- she was Susan's fellow gossiper, Lucy's good friend, Edmund's reading partner, and the only one besides him who sat out every dance at any social obligation, though he was quite sure that was because she hated dancing and not to give him company. "I'm studying, can you just-"
"You can look at the pictures of innards anytime." She waved his words away, reaching over to slam the book shut- but gently. She would never mistreat a book. "I KNOW Ed's weird. It's why I-" She paused for half a second, "why I tolerate him. But he's being ESPECIALLY weird with me."
"Well, I don't know." He said, carefully inching his hand towards his book. "Hormones?"
This was a topic which Susan would enjoy. Peter would've preferred it if Y/N had been talking about superheroes- which she did do, often.
She frowned, taking the book away and dropping it on her lap, "That's what I thought too..."
"When did this 'weirdness' start?"
She thought.
"No clue." She shrugged. She hadn't even noticed it till the day before when Edmund had just got up and left when she'd walked into the room- and it had been HIS room. And then he wouldn't look at her and would barely give her a proper answer, even when she started on about the misrepresentation of The Woman in recent Sherlock adaptations (one of his favorite topics to debate about). Lucy and Susan had also informed her that he blushed a lot when her name was mentioned, but Y/N knew that was just because he had no other friends.
"I see your memory has not improved." Peter said dryly- that girl had the worst memory of everyone he'd ever met. "Look, I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be fine soon. Ed goes weird and manages to go back to normal- well, his normal- soon enough. And if he continues- well, a bro-to-bro talk fixes stuff."
She rolled her eyes, "Of course you fall back on brohood. You know you each would've happily abandoned each other in a parking lot several times in your life."
"That's sibling-ing." He informed her and then managed to snatch his book away. At least she'd go back to her own home for dinner- she spent far too much time at the Pevensie house. Oh, sure, she might CLAIM it was because their cat had recently had kittens, but if you asked him- or Lucy- or Susan- or their parents- or the cook- or the cat- it was because of the weird, strange, inexplicable creature known as Edmund Pevensie. "It's getting late. Your mum will yell. Bye."
"We're still on to watch Black Widow together, right?" She asked, cocking her head- after several delays, the movie was finally releasing this Friday. She may have squealed about it almost every night. "Even Ed's weirdness won't stop me from THAT."
"We are definitely on." He said, with a mock-salute, and with a grin, she strolled out of his room.
She left his door open- he liked the noise and bustle of the rest of the house while he did work- and he could see her pause in front of Edmund's (closed) door and hover slightly, looking at it. Then she turned her face away, and walked down, presumably deciding that spending time with the kittens was better than puzzling out Edmund.
Peter reflected that he really couldn't disapprove of her choice- cute animal babies over his weird brother anyday.
But for now? Surgery theory.
--
Her door banged open and her mum chirped, "You've a visitor!"
Y/N rolled over in bed, mumbling something unintelligible. She was barely fit for human interaction when she was properly awake- when she was in bed, she wasn't even fit to make grunting noises with a troll or something.
She was sure her mother had rolled her eyes.
"Yes, she's awake, come in, Edmund."
She immediately pulled the blanket over her head.
Great. In addition to being seen asleep in bed at 2 in the afternoon, she was being a baby and covering her face.
On the other hand, though, at least he wouldn't see the hundred plush toys she cuddled with in her sleep.
"Go- AWAY."
Edmund pulled down the blanket, just a little so that her glare and morning scowl were fully visibly.
"Morning, Sleeping Grumpy."
This was not the first time he'd seen her in the morning, barely awake and hardly coherent. He'd called her Sleeping Beauty the first time- her heart certainly had NOT fluttered- but he'd decided this was more accurate.
"Wha'ya wan'?"
Edmund hesitated. The best way to tackle a Y/N in the morning- well, HER morning- was with slowness, calm and patience.
"I figured we could hang out a little, grab some lunch at the café-" There was a little café next to the bookstore they'd been haunting ever since she'd moved into his street, "and make a day of it, basically."
Was he asking her on a pity outing? Had Peter told him she was getting worried and antsy about him!?
Oh, she could push the blond Pevensie off a cliff.
"Um." She managed. "Now?"
"Sure, or perhaps in twenty minutes, after you aren't wearing bunny pyjamas and aren't holding a dog plushie to your chest..."
"His name is Milkshake." She informed him very primly. "Twenty minutes sounds fine. Go talk to my mother, she loves you more than me."
"Despite your sparkling personality?"
She threw a Tweety Bird at him.
"Get out."
--
Despite the weirdness of the last few- however long it had been- it was nice, strolling with Ed, laughing together, looking longingly at books with the most stunning covers but also the most exorbitant prices, without his siblings or her family breathing down their necks. Despite her lacklustre response to his invitation, she had to admit that spending any sort of time with Ed was nice.
"What are you lugging that around?" She asked, out of nowhere, as they walked down to the park, ice-creams in hand- dessert, after all, was required.
Edmund looked politely befuddled. "What? The ice cream? Because I want to eat it."
And people said he was the smartest of the Pevensies...
"No, you moron. I mean your satchel. Are you hiding a Philosopher's Stone in it or something?"
He glanced down at the bag slung across his body.
"Oh. No. Nothing half as interesting as a Philosopher's Stone- at least not to you."
She glowered at the path in front of her, as she licked at her ice cream.
She hated it when he was so cryptic. Like, just SAY it, it wasn't like she would just out-and-out reject it or what ever.
-
"Absolutely NO." Y/N said at once. "Definitely, completely, certainly, NOPE."
"Yes." Edmund said simply, as he laid out the board and started picking out the chess pieces out of the box. He was glad the park was nearly empty, he didn't trust children- or anyone, actually- around his precious chess set. It was antique. "Absolutely, definitely, complete YEP."
"I know chess."
That was a huge lie. One of the biggest she'd ever told. She knew, maybe, the names of three of the pieces and that checkmate meant that the game was over.
He gave her a baleful look.
"Binging The Queen's Gambit in one day doesn't mean you know chess."
Of course, The Queen's Gambit- and Tumblr- was the reason he was doing this at all, so he was very grateful for the show.
"Okay, fine, I don't know chess. It makes my head hurt." She pouted- being cute didn't work as well for her as it did for Lucy, considering Lucy was small and sweet and had big blue eyes, but it was worth a try?
"Please?" He asked, cocking his head to the side. "For me?"
Shucks. Apparently being cute works just as well for big brown eyes.
Also- she could've really chosen a better moment to remember that she was in love with Edmund Pevensie.
Oh, well. She'd forgotten about it for a while- it was easy, when being friends was what came first- but at least she hadn't remembered while she was out watching a movie with his brother, or walking around his house with cat and dog hair (she liked petting the stray dogs) all over her. She'd known it for a while, and hadn't been surprised when that realisation had hit her. Why else, after all, would she have allowed him free access to her book collection, if she wasn't in love? She barely even allowed anyone to touch her bookcase, her books were a far cry.
"Fine." She admitted grudgingly. "But I'm out of here the moment my ice-cream melts."
Or the moment she started blushing looking at him. Thankfully that hadn't happened yet. Today.
"Great." He grinned. He didn't even care that she'd said she'd split in a few minutes. Hopefully- if all went right- she wouldn't want to. "You have to first know all the names-"
"I know-"
He ignored her, "This is a rook- or castle, to you- this thing is a pawn, it can-"
Y/N tuned out barely eight words in, and she just had to hope he wouldn't quiz her about it, like they quizzed each other after reading something from the other's list. It was a mutually beneficial tradition, that, but this would just end up in her having the crown-headed piece thrown at her.
"And it can only move diagonally." He finally ended, though he'd noticed that Y/Ns eyes had gotten glassy and she had the same expression she had in school during classes. He'd taken a whole three minutes to finish off his ice-cream and she hadn't even noticed. "Got that?"
She almost dropped her ice-cream.
"Yes." She nodded, bobbing her head energetically. "Rook, pawn, king, queen, others, got it."
"Great." He said, and avoided an eye-roll with difficulty. "Let's have a game, shall we?"
She blinked very rapidly. "Now? But I don't even know..um...anything."
"I'll teach as we play. Practical experience." He shrugged, putting the pieces on the board. He was careful not to look at her, in case his expression- or his redness- gave it away. "White or black?"
"I'll take white." She said, inclining her head towards her ice-cream. "Vanilla for me, chocolate for you, so it fits."
"Okay." He nodded- his palms felt clammy- and forced a smirk, "You have to let go of your ice-cream to play."
Whatever he was planning to do, he'd chase her around the park if she got sticky stuff on his chess set.
This was better than having surprise orals in school, mostly because this was with Edmund, but her heart beat rapidly as it always did when she did something out of her comfort zone.
Or something she had absolutely zero idea about, despite binge-watching a television show about the same in ten hours.
She knew white moved first, so she picked up the piece- pawn, she knew- and moved it one step ahead. Surely that wouldn't be wrong.
Edmund gazed at the board, his look analytical- a fact which made Y/N want to laugh. He could beat her with his eyes closed, why was he having to think?
"You know." He began slowly. "There's a move I believe which would fit us perfectly."
He hoped he hadn't been off in his calculations.
"I think it's too early for me to learn any specific-"
"It's called the Lover's Gambit."
"The wh-"
And he leaned over the board- taking care to not disturb the pieces- and pressed his lips to hers.
Y/N did not zone out this time. This time, her eyes popped open in surprise- because Edmund Arthur Pevensie was kissing her- and she wondered if she hadn't passed out from chess boredom and this was all in fact a dream, but her mind- working extremely fast, for once- discarded that theory, and so she decided to do what she'd been wanting to do for a very long time.
She kissed back.
"Hey," He broke the kiss sometime later- he wondered if she could feel the rapid, fervent tattoo of his heart beat- and murmured against her lips, "your ice-cream's melted."
"Yes." She said, glancing down at the cone with dismay. But she glanced up immediately afterwards, because Edmund's face and his eyes and lips were way better to look at than melted vanilla. And as much as she loved vanilla, she wasn't IN love with it. Unlike her feelings for Edmund. "But I can ditch my self-imposed curfew, if we plan on continuing to do this."
"Kissing or playing chess?"
She narrowed her eyes and pulled her head back slightly.
"If you have to ask..."
He laughed, before loping his hands around her waist, and kissing her again- but only after making sure his chessboard was away from the sodden mess that was her ice-cream.
That board was precious.
It’s been a while, Tumblr, hiiiiiiiiii.

Grey's Anatomy Review 17x3
A truly emotional episode, also Where the heck was Dr Perez, I missed you come back.
___________________________________________
(Meredith Grey)
The belle of the ball for this episode, Meredith. Hasn't she been through enough? They were plenty of other doctors who haven't been tortured yet. But then again without her getting Covid we probably wouldn't have been treated to the Derek scene and possible cameos from other beloved characters. I loved every bit of the scenes on the beach even though I found myself wishing she would pass out some more so I could get even more Derek scenes, I mean you can't blame me they even played the MerDer song, but at the same time I was glad she couldn't get to him stay out of his arms Mer, you can't die no matter how much I want to witness a merder hug or kiss. It hurt my heart to see how broken everyone was, especially for Webber and Bailey who have both had to see her on the verge of death and pull her back from the brink of death way too many times. Ellis is adorable I hope she has many more scenes to come in future episodes and how cute is her nickname Ellie Belly. And she definitely did the right thing giving Webber her POA, he knows when to let go but will still fight like hell if he knows there's a chance of you living.
The scene with McWidow and her was adorable as well, my shipping levels for the two of them have gone up some more as well, but I did think it was too soon for him to be offering to be her POA if he wasn't just joking because I'll admit I wasn't sure if he was serious or not but after knowing her for such a short while not to mention his feelings that are beyond the friendly level for her, he would have done the extraordinary measures that Meredith wouldn't really want to try to save her. He's already invested.
The scenes with her and Richard were so wholesome he was the father she never had. He has loved and supported her from the beginning, their relationship is strong and one built on trust and hes right we do need Meredith Grey. The scene with Bailey was cute as well how she came to talk about changing her POA but switched to talking about her super risky surgery while practically on the verge of tears instead when she saw the previous conversation was making Meredith nervous.
Then there's Amelia and Maggie who have also been sitting on the edge of their seats praying for her to be alright. Wish I'd seen more scenes with the three sisters interacting a bit but the ones we did get were heartfelt and heartwarming.
On an unrelated note when she was trying to get to Derek but face planted into the sand instead was hilarious girl fell like a starfish.
___________________________________________
Tom Koracick
Not gonna lie for a good chunk of this episode I was started to dislike Tom. I love his character for some weird reason but at times his less than flattering attitude gets irritating, but then I realized that he has to be going through some stuff right now between the whole Teddy and Owen and him situation, the $100000 in booties incident and then he was fired from his job as chief of all chiefs. It's been a rough time for him and while that definitely does not excuse what he did to the new doctors it did make me a little more sympathetic to his rude attitude especially when he confessed to Richard that he didn't think he was a good teacher. And then the ultimate kick when you're down he received the news that he had Covid from literally the worst person they could have sent at that time.
Now don't get me wrong Koracick is a douche and all but he definitely is not going to get the same care that Meredith is getting, but Owen just told him to head home and stay there I know he's A symptomatic and all but even they can develop lung damage from Covid and he has no one there who really cares for him like that and will more than likely have to recover on his own without someone there to check up on him and he definitely doesn't have the same drive to live. Why can't he also have a hospital bed. Keep the same energy for everyone you're all on the same team at this point. When will everyone finally accept him into the club, this isn't the first time someone in that hospital has cheated.
Moving on to other things, I'm so excited to hear him say that he has to get over Teddy because he really does, especially because in the end Teddy is probably going to choose Owen, it's always Owen, but I'm not crossing my fingers about him staying away from her this time, because I've heard him say it before and now with him having Covid I think Teddy is going to be that one person who will visit him so she's not staying away from him anytime soon.
Might just be me but I'm sensing something might happen between him and the doctor that told him off earlier. Idk that's usually how most relationships on Grey's starts with the doctor offending the new comer but IDK.
___________________________________________
Owen
Is currently ignoring Teddy as he should be. She's just trying to talk to him as though nothing happened. The way he delivered that news to Koracick though could have been done better. I know he hates Tom right now but he could be a little more sympathetic he literally just told the man he has a life threatening disease and just said it like I know you have a flu that can kill you but go home and stay away from people, as though he has a common cold or a simple flu. This is someone who is a doctor who works with you saving lives in a pandemic and sure you don't have to like him but you do have to be on his team. Owen has cheated twice and yes this time it happened to him and yes he has a right to be pissed but have some compassion man.
___________________________________________
Teddy
Needs to stay away from Tom she only really attempted to talk to him after Owen gave her the cold shoulder, and she surely can't expect him to forget everything that happened so quickly and move on as though none of it ever happened. And like I said earlier she should let go of Tom and let him move on because at this point we all know she's going to pick Owen, it's always been Owen. I know I said at one point she should be with Tom but right now that feeling is gone I really don't think they're right for each other as much as I did before. And lastly I need her to figure herself out because she's treating the real MVP here and if she let's Anything happen to Meredith Grey after she survived the unimaginable she's going to have the whole hospital on her back and I will be mentally killing her as well because no boo not my Meredith.
___________________________________________
Richard Webber
Is now Meredith's POA and as I said earlier I couldn't agree more, hes the best person for the job. And I'm so happy for him being the chief of chiefs he seems genuinely happy again and I'm also happy that Koracick handed the job of training the doctors to him again because the man's right. Training the doctors is a gift and Richard surely has that gift. Enjoyed seeing him bring the doctors into the operating theater and giving the speech, it's been a while.
___________________________________________
Jo Wilson
Has really been having the work piled on her recently between Meredith having Covid and the mess of the pandemic itself she's been buried in work, and I'm so proud of her finally looking like a true grown attending in my eyes and she's doing great. The way she's been looking at babies of lately is adorable, I'm wondering which line they're intending to take her down with her new found love of babies. She doesn't have that much of a plot at the moment which is a good thing because at the moment having a plot includes having a positive Covid test.
___________________________________________
Bailey
Is seeing her last remaining duckling near death and is torn up about it. She sounded near tears when she was talking to her about the POA issue. She doesn't really have that much of a plot either which is especially good in her case because the Plot includes Covid and she actually has a preexisting heart problem so it would be very unlikely that it would work out in her favor. Watching her pride at seeing Richard doing his press conference was nice even though at first it seemed like she was a little upset about him being her boss again but she'll get over it.
___________________________________________
Deluca
Was seen way too little with Meredith in this episode they even gave Mcwidow time with her Deluca was only there for work which I found ridiculous, yes he had that one scene where he was grilling Teddy but that's not enough. That love triangle between him Mcwidow and Meredith is being formed as we speak. On another note I'm so glad to see him back to work again and healthy again and he's an attending I might have missed it but does he have a specialty because I've been trying to pinpoint it and I can't is it cardio? I guess I'll figure it out eventually.
___________________________________________
Maggie
Is understandably panicking she can't be Meredith's doctor because not only is she her sister but she is way too involved. When she asked Teddy of she was alright enough to work Meredith's case broke me. The pain in her voice and face, she feels so much and has been crying the whole episode, Thank God for Winston, he's been an anchor for her. I can't wait until they're able to be with each other physically instead of just talking on the screen. I wish them the best of luck.
___________________________________________
Jackson
Carrying on the work and teachings of Mark Sloan, and just existing really no plot at the moment as it has been for a while, and we weren't even blessed with Harriet this time but there was Ellis so I'll allow it.
___________________________________________
Link
Being a good boyfriend and father as usual. Hes so sweet, thoughtful and caring.
He also does not have a plot other than being a kickass partner and father and he better not have a plot any time soon either.
Amelia
Currently is just being a great mother and aunt with jo other plots which I am also happy for because it means neither of my babies are in the Covid plot circle so far, they're safe for now. Amelia seems so happy. I'm glad for her hope her joy can continue but knowing Grey's it probably isn't going to last for too much longer.

Say You’ll Stay With Me
Tumblr media
Word Count: 1071
Summary: Addison and Meredith talk about their shared past and Addison tried to convince her to move away from the past and into a shared future in L.A.
Characters: Meredith x Addison
Warnings: Heavily implied smut, talk of past major character death, angst
A/N: Hey everyone! This is my first MerAdd one shot and I know it's pretty short compared to my usual stuff but I will definitely be posting some more one-shots in the future (as well as the next chapter of my current multichapter story, it's coming I promise)! I know this one is a little vague about the timeline/the relationships but I came up with this idea and just had to write it. This is definitely angst heavy but I hope you enjoy anyway! Also, the lyrics at the beginning and end are from Sweater Weather by The Neighbourhood. The song was my inspiration for sort of the vibe of this one-shot but I did move away from that a bit but I hope they still fit anyway.As always my requests are open if you would like to see me write anything in particular in the future.
Feedback is what motivates me to work so please let me know what you think! Reblogs are also greatly appreciated.
Taglist is open!

I hate the beach
But I'll stand in California with my toes in the sand
Use the sleeves of my sweater
Let's have an adventure
~~~
Addison slowly opened her eyes and blinked at the ceiling, letting her eyes adjust to the darkness of the room. When she moved she could the weight of the duvet wrapped around her, it must have been pulled up in the middle of the night because when she had fallen asleep it was still at the bottom of the bed.  She rolled over onto her side expecting to feel the warmth of another body next to her, but instead, the bed was empty. She sighed. She couldn't deny the disappointment that washe over her settling like a pit in her stomach.  She willed herself to sit up and take in the state of her bedroom. A wine glass - her expensive ones that she only took out for important dinners, or when she wanted to impress someone - on each nightstand and an empty bottle of pricey wine on her side. Clothes were scattered across the hardwood floors. Addison's heels kicked off next to the bedroom door.
Only now that Addison had sat up, holding the duvet close to her chest with one hand, did she feel the cold breeze on the exposed skin of her arms. Her eyes landed on the balcony door which had been thrown open and she finally saw her, a silhouette against the bright light of the moon shining down onto the balcony.
Addison reached across the floor and grabbed the oversized sweater that had been discarded there earlier in the night and stood slipping it on over her head, the chilled bite to the air still hitting her legs with the material stopping halfway down her thighs. She moved across the room and crept out onto the balcony. Instinctively she slipped her arms around her waist lightly tracing shapes across her sides with the tips of her fingers.
"Meredith." She mumbled. "What are you doing out here?"
"It's so peaceful," Meredith whispered. She had taken the bedsheet with her and it was now wrapped around her body, bunched in her hands where she held it in place. Addison slowly moved her hands up her sides and let Meredith slide her hands in the sleeves of her sweater. "The sound of the waves is so soothing and it's all just outside your back door."
"I know." Addison nodded resting her head on Meredith's shoulder. She was right, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore had always been soothing to Addison and she had lost count of how many times she had drifted off to sleep with the doors open wide on a warm night so she could listen to it. "If I didn't have to work I would just spend all day out there."
"You really have everything here. I mean you have your friends, the practice, surgeries at St. Ambrose, and this incredible house." Meredith sighed.
"I don't have you here." Addison said honestly.
"I wish I could live somewhere like this. I mean Seattle is my home but we don't have beaches in Seattle, we have ferryboats." Meredith laughed gently.
"I did always love a good ferryboat back in Seattle." Addison chuckled. "And everyone always says that when they come here. Bailey said the practice was like a spa, she was waiting for her champagne. Mark almost moved here too."
"I didn't know Mark thought about moving out here. When did that happen?" Meredith asked turning her head to watch Addison as she spoke.
"When Sloan was pregnant and they flew out here for the surgery. Mark kept talking about the possibility of having three parents for the baby, he wanted it to be our second chance. The chance to be parents that we never got." Meredith watched the expression on Addison's face change. There was something sad about the way her gaze drifted back to the water but she didn't explain and Meredith didn't push. "But anyway, he was just heartbroken and wanted Lexie, not me. Him going back to Seattle was better for both of us."
For a moment they both stood in silence, content with simply being this close to one another. Meredith leaned back into Addison and gently kissed her cheek.
"I miss Mark." Addison said when she finally spoke again.
When Meredith had first arrived in L.A. it had immediately felt like a different world to her, somewhere that felt so disconnected from the hard memories and everything she had been through back in Seattle. So much so that she had almost forgotten the plane crash was yet another event in her shared past with Addison. Addison had lost someone she loved that day too.
"I miss Lexie." Meredith nodded. "If I'm being honest so much has happened recently that Seattle and the memories there just feel like the past, but here, it feels different. It feels like I can finally escape it all."
"You could escape it all," Addison said then. She turned Meredith in her arms until her back was resting against the balcony railing and she was face to face with her. "Let Seattle be your past. Start over here, with me. You could work at the practice, do surgeries at St. Ambrose, you are an incredibly gifted surgeon and Charlotte would be lucky to have you. You could live here."
"Addison." Meredith's tone was somewhere between a pleading and a warning. "You know I have - I have responsibilities in Seattle."
"But you're unhappy there Meredith. We both know it. Just please think about it Mer."
Meredith couldn't bear the hurt in Addison's voice, or the way it cracked on the nickname. That was the first time she had ever called her Mer.
"Okay." She nodded leaning forward to press a kiss to Addison's shoulder. She pulled Addison closer to her and rested her forehead against hers. "I promise I'll find a way to be with you. Always."
"Okay," Addison whispered.
Meredith reached her hand up to brush away the tears that were now spilling down Addison's cheeks. She leaned into the contact and let out a shuddering breath.
"For now will you at least come back to bed with me? It's freezing out here."
My Internship Blues chapter 7
Tony woke up well rested in his apartment, another day...another shift...he couldn't wait to meet Dr.Strange. 8am ,he reached the hospital, put on his coat over the scrubs "let's get work done"
"Hey Tones!" Rhodhey greeted him
"Honey-bear, let's get dinner together tomorrow"
"Sure! Atleast you're taking about food today, don't pull that no-eating,no-resting stunt again tones!"
" I won't, jeez you guys fuss more than my mum!"
They went on the rounds, Tony entered Ward-4 , he went to the 3rd bed to check the patient's chart
"you ok son? You fell down last day after drawing my blood!" Asked the old man , concern flashing through his face.
Tony felt embarrassed, "yes, I'm ok.. Thank you" , he went through the ward checking the patients, after adjusting the drip for the 9th bed , he was trying to back away when he collided with Strange.
"Morning Stark!" Stephen greeted him ,took the patient's chart.
"M-morning sir!" Tony stumbled, And felt a gentle tug on his coat pocket! Stephen gave a nod and crossed him.
Tony stood there for a while, trying to control an overwhelming urge to gush or atleast let a blush take over his face. He got over the feeling and put a hand in his pocket then...
'wait, what's that?' He saw a protein bar in his pocket. 'hey that wasn't there, I didn't buy protein bars' he thought
"Tony, need help with a case here!" Lucas called from the other end
"coming!" Tony rushed to his help, forgetting about the protein bar.
During the shift , Tony nibbled on the protein bar.
"hello again, Dr. Stark!" Tony turned back to see Stephen , bending over the reception to take a file. He quickly puts down the protein bar "hello sir."
"Be in OR-3 in 3hrs, you'll be assisting me with a berry aneurysm today!" Stephen said warmly
Tony's eyes sparkled "really?"
Stephen laughed "yes! Finish off that snack, and go back to wards, be on time for the surgery, I expect nothing but excellence"
Tony chirped "yes sir"
Stephen passed him , and he felt another tug on the coat, but Tony was too giddy to think of it.
Later on
Tony got out of the OR after assisting Stephen , he sat down on the chair breathing deeply, taking in the high.... The high that he chased years for... The adrenaline pumping their the veins , that he craved for... Surgery was truly exhilarating!
Stephen came out the OR taking off his cap. "That was such a high" Tony sighed , Stephen smiled "it always is"
Tony: I don't know why people do drugs!
Stephen smiled wider " glad you enjoyed your first experience!" Stephen leaves & Tony goes to the changing room to get his coat back, there he opens the locker and finds another protein bar and a small chocolate.
Tony wonders "who's giving me protein bars, well atleast the chocolate is nice" whole he pops the chocolate into his mouth. He takes the protein bar and shoves it into his coat pocket.
8hrs later
Tony : I don't get it Rhodhey, they just magically show up in my pocket, like I finish one and boom there's another.
Rhodhey: you sure you don't know who it is?
Tony: I don't...I.
Stephen stops by the reception near Tony and Rhodhey who are chatting while searching for a patient's file. "Rhodhes hand me Ms.Keene's reports, patient's bed no. 247"
Rhodhey hands him the file and Stephen leaves but not before exchanging smiles with Tony, Tony giggles a little.
Tony: so as I was saying...*and while he puts his hand in his pocket* oh my God! There's another chocolate in here, I swear it wasn't there a minute ago...see Rhodhey!
Rhodhey:......... Seriously Tony? You really don't know?
Tony: how would I?
Rhodhey: you're blind Tones!
Tony: am not! *Pouts*
Rhodhey: you are ..... It's clearly Dr. Strange!
Tony: wait wha~ ???
Rhodhey: it started happening after the day you fell unconscious.. it makes sense, he's slipping in food so you don't get hypoglycemia again.
Tony: *gasp* he thinks I can't take care of myself! *Stomps feet* I'm a grown man, he's treating me like a child!
Rhodhey:.............
Tony: he thinks I'm incompetent Rhodhey, what do I do?
Rhodhey: Tony? Stop you over analyse everything... He doesn't think you're incompetent, he wouldn't have called you into the OR then.
Tony: *calms down* true but~
Rhodhey: no buts......I think he cares for you Tones...I think he likes you.
Tony blushed into a shade of red : H-he likes me!? *He covered half of his face with his scut book , covering till his nose. Tony looked at Stephen , who was talking to a nurse... Their eyes meet and Stephen winks... Tony blush instantly intensifies & he drops his head into his scut book. He hears Rhodhey snicker from his side, he doesn't even look up.
12:30am night, Tony's apartment
Tony had come back home,had dinner and was on bed with his laptop on and a thick book "Bailey & Love's Short Practice of Surgery" open in his bed , while he's lost in his own little world instead of studying. A pillow clothed to his chest , laying on his stomach , face pressed on the pillow, Tony stared at Stephen's poster , a faint pink tinge on his cheeks and shy smile that could be seen despite the pillow covering parts of his face. " He likes me" and Tony cuddles with the pillow at that thought.
Chapter 02
Hi guys! How are you on the other side of the screen? First of all, I'm so sorry for not being able to upload the chapter last week. I fumbled with this semester's final exams and failed. Second, my sincere thanks to Carly Giuliani, whoknows33, Calzonafan123, ChrisM92, NDenner, brady25, Tifenn: tifustiti, perpetualblyss and @loudwithlaughter for all your reviews. Last but not least, my big thanks to my dear friend and beta reader @tiggermay
Arizona was on a high. After Jackson Prescott’s case she’s been on a string of good results, with no children dying on her hands in the last couple of weeks.
Arizona skated all over the hospital (where the nurses allowed - she had tried to skate at NICU only to be tackled by one of them). She and Kai were dancing every day in her apartment. She was even running in the park!
Her life was practically perfect. All that was missing was Nick arriving in Seattle (he promised that he was just tying up his business there, and… you know, having to walk a trail to the nearest town where he would rent a car to get to the airport).
And Calliope.
So, Arizona was basically floating in a pink cloud when Dr. Dixon asked her to consult on Stacy Pollock.
Arizona sighed before walking over to Bailey (who had been telling anyone and everyone who wanted to listen, -or didn’t -, that Arizona Robbins was Seattle Grace's best acquisition in a long time, and no one should touch a child without her permission…. Her new rule to her residents.), to confirm the diagnosis of cor pulmonale.
As soon as Dr. Dixon left, Bailey grabbed her lab coat. “Aren't you going to scrub in this surgery? You... You’re the peds surgeon!”
Arizona smiled in surprise. "Bailey, this is a cardiac case. You and Dr. Dixon can handle it."
Bailey shook her head. “She's just a child. And I…” she trailed off.
Arizona gently put a hand on her friend's shoulder. “Children are tough. And maybe you’ll open this girl's chest and fix something simple. Or maybe she’ll need a transplant and a backpack with a portable pump that will deliver her medicine at the right times so she can have a childhood. Either way, you’ll give her the rest of her life. And I'm telling you that you’ll want to be there for this moment. Because Stacy? She needs you.”
***
Arizona returned to her office. She had been trying to write an article about Jackson Prescott's treatment, but how could she explain that she knew what to do, before ever touching the boy, well… In a way that wouldn’t guarantee her, a one-way trip to the psyche ward, anyway?
She was turning the pages of his exams when she heard knocking on the door. She didn't usually close her office door during the day, so it was open, and Paul Anderson was there looking anxious.
Arizona widened her eyes for a second before she remembered that Wallace was alive. Then she gave her best and most charming smile and stood up. "Hey! How can I help you?"
Paul took a deep breath and walked into the office, closing the door behind him. "Dr. Robbins, correct?"
Arizona nodded and reached out to greet him. The grip was tight, though Paul's hands were shaking. “I’m Paul Anderson. My son, Wallace, is a patient here. Dr. Kenley was his doctor.”
They sat down, and Arizona quickly closed the folders in front of her. "I think I haven't met Wallace yet."
Paul shook his head. “He… He has short bowel syndrome. He had the last surgery with Kenley a few months ago. His eleventh bowel resection.” Paul took a deep breath, and Arizona noticed Kai rising from the couch to stand beside her. “My wife, Bethany, she attends a support group to parents in this situation. And she heard about Jackson Prescott's recovery. So, I want to transfer Wallace's care to you as well as discuss the best course of treatment.”
Arizona took a deep breath. "Do you have his latest exams?"
Paul nodded eagerly, and opened his briefcase, offering her a binder.
Arizona smiled reassuringly and put her hand over Paul's. “I'm going to study Wallace's case. And the possible alternatives we have. And then we can decide our next step, okay?”
Paul took a deep breath. “He's nine years old… And he's done more than twice as many surgeries than Bethany and I combined. They keep saying that he doesn't have much of a chance of living... But, he's my son, Dr. Robbins. He's my boy.” He said brokenly while staring at Arizona. He lifted a hand to rub at his tired eyes and she couldn’t help but feel her heart twist at the anguish and fatigue that she could see in him. She remembered how emotionally draining, worrying for Sofia had been… And God… Sofia. She missed her baby so much.
Arizona nodded sympathetically. "I... Let's make a plan." She said, clearing her throat.
Paul nodded. They exchanged contacts and soon the man said goodbye and left the office. Arizona closed the door and crouched on the floor covering her face.
"I need to save Wallace, Kai."
The angel took an apple. "Do your best. But remember that some things are immutable.”
Arizona nodded, and when she saw Kai eating her apple, she couldn’t help but roll her eyes at him. "How many of these have you eaten?"
Kai laughed hoarsely. "Four? I like the taste. Theoretically, I don't need to eat.” He smiled sympathetically at Arizona. "I think it's cute that you prepare your snacks like you're doing it to Sofia. If you weren't having lunch at the cafeteria, I bet you'd make your lunches in the same way."
Arizona shrugged. "Force of habit."
Kai nodded. "Want some help thinking of something for the Anderson boy? I can help you remember their exams from the other timeline."
Arizona nodded. "Let's get to work then, Kai"
***
A few hours later, Arizona was preparing a file for the Anderson family. She wanted Wallace to have a bowel transplant. Her thoughts were interrupted by frantic knocking on the door.
"Come in," she called.
Miranda Bailey came into her office out of breath, but with a smile on her face. “You're brilliant!” she stated. “I was in surgery with Stacy and Dixon said she would need a transplant. And, and I had to leave. Because I couldn't handle the idea of this little girl slipping through my fingers and I went to visit my son at the daycare. When I saw the backpacks, and I remembered what you said. So, I ran back, and I told the parents what we could do... I would have come before, but Dr. Dixon... Well, she had a moment. But we can put the portable pump on Stacy, and she can have a childhood!”
Arizona's eyes widened. "Dr. Bailey, you talked to Dr. Dixon before talking to the parents, correct?"
Bailey's smile slowly died. “Well… She was breaking the news to her parents! They needed to know!”
Arizona sighed. “And she's chief surgeon on this case. And she deserves our respect. So, I'll be happy to assist on this surgery, but you need to apologize to her.”
Bailey grunted softly but nodded. "But you’re going to scrub in on the surgery, right?"
Arizona laughed softly and nodded. “Great save, Bailey. I’m proud of you."
Bailey's chest filled with pride and she passed the exams to Arizona as they walked to the OR.
***
Arizona smiled encouragingly at Bailey once the surgeon had started. Kai was watching over Dixon's shoulder, a certain fascination in his angelic expressions.
"I'm sorry for my outburst." Bailey started breaking the uncomfortable silence. "I should've spoken to you first."
Dixon nodded, her focus completely on the procedure. “It was inappropriate, but I've come to expect it from pediatric surgeons. Always breaking protocol.” She sighed and shook her head.
Bailey looked surprised at Dixon. “I'm not a pediatric surgeon. I've landed a few peds cases recently, but I'm getting back to general surgery the first chance I get.”
Arizona tilted her head. Bailey would be a great pediatric surgeon. However, Webber had chosen her to follow his footsteps. And she had already tried to have this fight and lost.
“You touch the child whenever you speak with her.” Dixon continued “You explain conditions to the child, not just the parents. You react to the patient as if it was your own child. You break protocol, which is inappropriate. Except in pediatric surgery, where protocols are constantly evolving. You are not a general surgeon. You're a pediatric surgeon.”
Arizona smiled at Bailey. Dixon was right. Bailey would be excellent at peds.
***
Arizona was heading for the locker room so she could change. Some nurses had invited her for a drink after work and she was happy to accept. When she saw Bailey smiling outside Stacy Pollock's room, she stopped beside her to watch the girl showing her backpack full of ornaments to her parents.
"Oh my God," she exclaimed. "Did you use a bedazzler?"
Bailey lifted the machine, a smile on her face. “Circa 1986. As seen on TV.”
Arizona laughed in surprise. “Dixon’s right, you know. You do belong in peds surgery. Although, I think Ri... The chief. The chief has already chosen you to take his place.”
Bailey shook her head. “My own baby almost died last year. The doctors in this hospital, my friends, all worked to save his life. And I stood outside the room feeling so useless, so powerless and helpless. Like I was losing everything in the world and couldn’t do a single damn thing to stop it. And when he didn’t die, I knew I didn't want to be anywhere near that feeling again, so I think that makes me pretty unsuitable for pediatric surgery.”
Arizona looked away for a minute. She knew the feeling Bailey was narrating. She had felt it on her skin when her baby was born four months too soon after that terrible car accident. She shook her head, trying to clear her thoughts.
“I'd say that makes you uniquely qualified. And if you have an interest and Richard Webber allows it, I'd love to have a chance to rob you into pediatric surgery.” she said smiling at Bailey before walking away.
***
Arizona was sitting at the bar laughing at what some nurse was saying. She had had her fair share of affairs in Seattle before she time travelled, and now no one understood why she was suddenly celibate.
She was talking to a girl from Pathology when her eyes landed on Calliope. She looked so sad. The weight of the world on her shoulders and still the most beautiful woman she had ever seen.
Arizona saw Little Grey exchange a few words with her before she got up and went to the bathroom.
Kai poked her shoulder. "Go after her, Robbins!" He murmured in her ear.
Arizona smiled and excused herself as she went to the bathroom. Butterflies on her stomach, her hands sweating... God, the effect Calliope had on her, even after all this time...
She opened the bathroom door and couldn’t help but cast an appreciative glance across Calliope's shape, leaning over the sink, touching up her makeup.
“Hey”
"Hey" Calliope answered without turning to her, almost like an automatic answer.
"Ortho, right?"
“Yeah, right. Hi.”
“I'm Arizona Robbins. Peds surgery” (your future wife, mother of your daughter, the love of your life). “I've seen you at the hospital” she took a deep, nervous breath. "Are you ok?"
Callie ruffled her hair, clearly upset. "You know... I'm fine."
And she turned around. And Arizona almost lost her breath at seeing her eyes so closely. She had almost forgotten how expressive and captivating those eyes were. Callie has always been so open... Before all the pain she caused. Pain, she could now, fix.
“Fine. People talk. Where we work. They talk. A lot.” Arizona started anxiously, her speech stilted and awkward, (God what is wrong with her?). "So, for the sake of being honest, I think I should tell you that I know things about you" (because I’m from the future and we were married. Because I asked about you). "Because people talk.”
Callie bowed her head, the smile on her face faded for a second. "Oh... You mean... Terrific." She said muttered tiredly, huffing a sarcastic, breathy laugh.
Callie looked down and Arizona stepped a little closer. “It is, actually. The talk.” Callie leaned against the sink. “People really like you over there. They respect you and they're concerned and interested. They really like you. Some of them really like you.”
Kai shook his head. "Where are you going with this?", he said not expecting an answer.
Arizona took a deep breath. "You just… You look upset. And I thought that you should know that the talk is good. And when you're not upset, when you're over being upset, there will be people lining up for you.”
Calliope laughed and it was one of the most wonderful sounds Arizona had heard. "You want to give me some names?" She asked wryly.
Arizona smiled coyly and approached Callie. She would never understand how Callie could doubt how attractive she was. How magnetic she could be. She leans in and slowed down a bit just an inch before Callie’s lips, not wanting to spook her but also not willing to let a chance by, and when she didn’t move back, leaned in kissed her gently.
Fireworks. Arizona thought. And those lips...
She pulled away slowly. "I think you'll know" She smiled at Callie mischievously before leaving the bathroom.
Kai was laughing alongside her as she paid for hers and Calliope's tabs before leaving the bar to return to her apartment.
“Jesus, that conversation was kind of painful to watch”. Kai said, wincing theatrically “You couldn’t think of anything else to say to her? God! Talking about other people talking, we really need to work on your conversational skills.” Kai sighed dramatically and shaking his head back and forth his wild black curls flopping around, when suddenly he lifted his head to exclaim: “But, hey the kiss! I knew you had it in you!”
Arizona laughed as she threw herself on her bed, her fingers touching her lips gently. She had almost forgotten Calliope's innocent glances. Her charming insecurity. And the lips... Oh those lips! “Reliving this moment is worth any price for coming back here, Kai” she whispered.
Kai's canines flashed in the light for a second before Arizona heard his hoarse laugh fill the apartment.
That night she dreamed of her wedding day.
***
Arizona knew Calliope was following her around the hospital and asking about her, working up the courage to ask her out. And each time she could see a shadow of her getting close, even for a second, she needed to stop and take a deep breath.
Kai seemed to be having fun like never had before, watching this cat and mouse game.
She had just helped the nurses set up a scavenger hunt for the children (they heard about the interns’ scavenger hunt and they wanted to do one too) when Paul and Bethany knocked on her office door.
“Mr. Anderson, Mrs. Anderson! Please come in!” she greeted them excitedly.
Bethany smiled. "Call me Bethany, Doctor Robbins."
"If so, please call me Arizona."
She picked up two folders she had prepared for them, a thing Nicole Herman had taught her for when parents needed to make a medical decision. She took a deep breath before she started. “Wallace's case is quite severe. And I disagree with the treatment made by Dr. Kenley. I think repeating the same surgery more than ten times won’t yield new results. After studying and contacting some colleagues, my official recommendation is that Wallace should’ve a bowel transplant.”
Paul closed his eyes, releasing a heavy breath and Bethany began to cry silently. Arizona gently pushed the folders toward them. “However, no decision needs to be made today. For now, Wallace is stable and maybe he’ll stay in this state. But… In case, we need to interfere… When we discuss transplants, in addition to the risks of surgery, we’re talking about a lifetime of periodic hospital visits and medicines to keep his immune system in check. I have prepared this document for you to help you understand what it might mean in the long run for Wallace and you both. So, you can read, and I’ll be happy to answer your questions. Of course, if you want a second opinion as well, fell free to take it to a second doctor.”
Paul took the folder with shaking hands, tears keeping him from reading. "But would he live?"
Arizona nodded. "I believe this is the best chance for us to extend Wallace's life."
Bethany looked at Arizona for a moment. "Do you have children, Arizona?"
She opened her mouth for a moment almost saying yes, she had. She had a beautiful daughter. But no. She didn't have her daughter. Yet. Arizona smiled. "Not yet."
Bethany nodded. "A transplant means he would have a childhood... A normal life."
“He would need take medicine and need to see a doctor more than usual, yes. But I firmly believe this is Wallace's best chance.”
Before Paul could speak, she smiled. “You don't have to decide anything right now. Take this information home. Read it calmly. Talk to his pediatrician. When you guys make the decision, Wallace will enter a list and then we'll have to wait. There is no rush.”
Paul took a deep breath. "If a transplant is what is needed to see my son grow up, Dr. Robbins, you can put him on that list."
***
Arizona took a deep breath handing the forms to the nurse. Wallace Anderson was officially on the transplant list. Now she just had to wait.
She walked to her office, slowly. She felt the beginnings of a migraine starting to build up just behind her eyes. Arizona closed the door slowly and sat down, resting her head in her hands. She grunted in frustration at Miranda Bailey's application for a fellowship in pediatric surgery. She had noticed the hesitation in Bailey to get away from Richard Webber.
She was exhausted from all these waiting games. It seemed that waiting was all she been doing lately. Wait for Calliope to talk to her. Wait for Sofia to be born. Wait for Richard Webber to stop Bailey from doing the fellowship. Wait for Karev be interested in peds. Wait for Nick’s and April’s arrival. It had all become one big waiting game. And she was shaking with anxiety to begin her life!
***
Arizona massaged her temples while reading Miranda Bailey's application. She needed to talk to Bailey. While it was true that she had a gift for pediatrics and would be a wonderful addition to Arizona’s team she refused to go into battle with Richard Webber, over a resident who still wasn’t all that sure about actually joining. Arizona took a deep breath and skated to the General Surgery Nurse Station. She smiled when she saw Bailey there.
“This is the first step in the beginning of a new life” she stated, pointing to the letters of recommendation in Bailey's hands. “How are we feeling? Positive? Confident?”
Bailey took a deep breath, as if trying to calm down. “I’m good. Great.”
Arizona nodded, crossing her arms. “Peds Surgery is super competitive.” Arizona said, gently trying to poke Bailey. She needed to know if this time the woman was serious about delving into this world. She wouldn’t put her neck on the line for someone unwilling to get on her ship.
Bailey nodded. For the first time in a long time, the great Miranda Bailey found herself wanting to impress an attendant. “That's why I'm armed with letters of recommendation to put the competition to shame. Shepherd says I'm talented and resourceful. Sloan finds it an honor to work with me.”
Before she could continue, Arizona interrupted. “What does the chief think?”
“I'm still working on that.” she promised.
Arizona sighed. “Look, I'm not going to get into a tug war with Richard Webber, Miranda. He's grooming you to take his place, so it's not just his recommendation that matters.”
Bailey looked at her in surprise. “Richard Webber has no decision-making power over my future. You calm down. I've got it under control.”
Arizona smiled. “Good. Because speaking on my behalf, we couldn't be more excited to have you.” Arizona saw Richard coming down the stairs and decided to just skate away. That was a fight she had no interest in getting into.
Bailey almost sighed in relief. She didn't want to go to war with the chief, but that didn't mean Arizona didn't want her as a student.
***
Arizona was analyzing some post-op exams when she felt Calliope approaching. She bit the inside of her cheek trying to stay calm.
Kai appeared beside her. “Here she comes. Try to be smoother than your last conversation.” He said teasingly, winking at Arizona playfully while nudging her shoulder with his.
"Hey," Calliope said, taking a deep breath, resting a hand on the counter.
Arizona turned to her, turning her back to Kai and his theatrics, a big smile on her face. “Calliope. I haven't seen you around!” (Alright, she had seen Calliope watching her through the hospital, but she didn't need to tell her that).
"Well," Callie continued, a big smile on her face. “I've been avoiding you”
Arizona made a false expression of surprise and crossed her arms.
"Is that your best surprise face, woman?!" Kai criticized, but with a fond and exasperated smile on his face. He had never seen Arizona smile so big.
"I know, it's so weird," Callie said, clearly embarrassed by the reddening of her cheeks. “You share a kiss with a woman you've never seen before…”
Arizona's smile faded a little as she saw Callie looking around, as if to make sure no one was listening. Damn, she had forgotten that right now, she was a newbie in the LGBT+ world.
“Honestly, this is a new adventure, one I'm ready to take, for the second time, and… Anyway. Do you want to go on a date with me?”
Arizona tilted her head slightly and smiled. "I would love to."
Callie's eyes widened in surprise. "Oh really?! I mean... This... This is great!”
Arizona giggled softly. She took a piece of paper from her pocket and quickly wrote down her number (old number, current number, Thank God for Kai by her side saying the right one). She steps closer to Callie and puts the paper in her pocket. "I'll wait for your text, Calliope," she murmured, her lips close to Callie's ear before she walked away.
Kai was doing a little dance next to Arizona. “You have a date! You have a date!” He hummed, his bare feet tapping the hospital floor in time with his silly little tune.
Arizona bit her lower lip and couldn’t help but follow Kai’s rhythm. God, she had a date!
***
Callie froze in shock, a huge smile on her face. She honestly thought Arizona would dismiss her. But she had said yes! Her eyes widened. Arizona had said yes. She was expecting a text. She had to plan their date! Callie had never planned a date. God, she had a date!
***
Callie hurried to Bailey's side. Everyone on the surgical staff had heard Bailey sing Arizona’ praises. Bailey was trying to become the woman’s student, for God's sake. She should know Arizona well enough to give some tips, right? Right.
Callie bit her fingernail, waiting for the chief to move away from Bailey. She'd really thought Arizona was going to say something like she wasn't lesbian enough for her, not in a million years did she think she might end up with a date. She tried to approach the other woman casually, leaning over the counter.
"So, Bailey..." she began. "You and Arizona Robbins are kind of friends, right?"
Bailey was way too focused on reading whatever paper she had on her hands to look at Callie. Callie took a deep breath. "Bailey? Bailey, I'm trying to get some help over here."
"The chief..." she started indignantly. "He wrote me a form letter of recommendation." She said showing the paper to Callie.
“What? That's insane. He's the chief, and you're Bailey.” Callie started reading. “Pleasant in the OR and gets along well with the nurses and rest of the staff. She's completed a serviceable amount of research. A fine addition to any program.”
Callie raises her eyebrows in surprise. This couldn’t be a letter about Miranda Bailey, especially not one coming from the chief. The man was practically grooming her to take his place! That’s the best he has to say?!
“Fine! He used the word fine! A blank page would mean more. I pulled off a twelve people domino surgery. I took out and put back six of a dying girl's organs! I'm Dr. Bailey. I'm better than fine!” Bailey marched off furiously.
Callie hurried after her. "Yes, you are! So much that you want to study with Arizona! And I just asked her out and- “
Bailey came to sudden halt and looked at Callie dumbfounded. "Stop. Did you just say that you asked Dr. Robbins out?”
Callie nodded. "And I need help."
Bailey took a deep breath. “You need to not screw it up, because that woman is the best pediatric surgeon I've ever seen. She is almost six weeks without losing a patient. The hospital needs her, and I need her. And now I need to talk to Richard Webber.”
Callie froze in place. Oh, beloved Jesus... What would she do?! She needed Mark. Mark would know what to do.
***
She only found Mark when he came after her… After punching Derek Shepherd. Callie took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Maybe this was not a good time to talk about her love life.
***
Arizona smiled as she saw Callie coming out of the elevator. "Calliope!" She called happily.
Callie turned to her with clearly anxious eyes. "All right! Look, I asked you out, but I don't know how to do that! I kind of just got into this whole girl story… Women. And maybe I'm inexperienced in that. But I am experienced in other things. I mean... I'm a senior resident. I'm a great surgeon. I'm a divorcee., I was in the Peace Corps. Botswana. It was what convinced me to go to med school. And, mostly recently, I've experienced the joy of cooking. And, and maybe now you are thinking you should’ve said no but-” she didn’t seem to be getting anywhere near a pause… Or a breath for that matter.
Arizona bit her lower lip. God, she had almost forgotten how Calliope could get lost into her own head and come to all these conclusions before anything even happened. It was so... Cute. Annoying when it was about decisions in their relationship… But cute. "Calliope?" She interrupted tentatively.
Callie paused for breath, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Kai was laughing. "That explains a lot."
Arizona smiled. “Do you want to go out to dinner with me Friday? I'd love to talk more about your experiences.”
Callie smiled with relief. “Yeah. That would be great."
Arizona smiled. "Well, you have my number."
Arizona’s pager started ringing. She pouted. "Damn it. I'd love to hear more, but I need to go.” She approached Callie, her lips almost touching her earlobe. "Bye, Calliope," she muttered breathily before running back to the NICU.
Kai's laugh rang in her ears, but a huge smile was on her face all night long.
Special Treatment
He couldn't believe it.
Three weeks.
Three whole weeks he'd been learning and practicing for this damn surgery and now he was off of it, all because Jo asked to be on it? Levi knew it was somewhat ridiculous to be angry but he was. This surgery would have been a massive stepping stone for him in his career and now here he was, sat in one of the on-call rooms, study books placed out in front of him.
A rotationplasty is not something that happens too often and the fact that he had the incredible opportunity to scrub in on it when none of the other interns did was huge. In all too quick of a moment, it had been ripped away from him. However, that wasn't what hurt the most about the whole situation. What hurt most is that Jo made that face, subtly mentioning how Levi was only on the surgery because of 'special treatment', obviously hinting towards being Nico's boyfriend. What hurt even more was that Nico just stood there and didn't say anything. He didn't deny it, didn't try and fight to keep Levi on the surgery. He knew how excited Levi was for this surgery and still did nothing. Absolutely nothing.
That was what Levi was most vexed about.
He hadn't heard from Nico since. Honestly, he didn't want to. He was mad. Real mad. If he saw Nico now, he didn't know how he would react. Would he snap? Would he just ignore him and hope he went away? Would he act as if nothing had happened? They were still on rough terms from that morning, which only made the situation a bit more intense.
Levi let out a sigh as he flipped the page of the book that was open in front of him, tapping the pen in his other hand against the table as his eyes skimmed through the words. He wrote a couple important, keywords down, hoping it would help him memorize them. He still had exams he needed to do and he planned on passing them.
As he went to write down another thing, his phone buzzed on the table next to him. It was a text from his mother, asking if he was okay. He half-heartedly smiled to himself as he picked up his phone and swiftly texted her back, letting her know that his day had just been a bit hectic. At least he'd managed to scrub in on some sort of surgery earlier. That memory of the man coughing up a massive blood clot was something he wouldn't forget. Ever.
Just as he pressed send, the door of the on-call room opened. Levi's attention automatically went to the door, only to see Nico standing there, almost shocked to see Levi. With a heavy sigh, Levi turned his attention back to his books, picking his pen back up to scribble down some more notes. The door clicked shut behind Nico as he entered, sitting himself down opposite Levi. Even so, Levi kept his focus on his notes, not really wanting to argue with Nico right now. He didn't need the added stress.
"Hey," Nico began, trying to capture Levi's attention. Much to his dismay, Levi didn't look up. "What are you doing?"
"Studying," Levi said, matter-of-factly, like it wasn't completely obvious what he was doing.
"Are you okay?" Nico asked, resting his arms on the table, causing it to shift slightly. It ended up making Levi mess up his notes. They were going so well.
"I'm fine," He spoke through gritted teeth, almost slamming his pen down on the table as he sat back in his chair, arms folded across his chest. "What?"
"You obviously aren't okay, considering that you keep snapping at me." Nico shook his head a little, letting out a breathy laugh. He couldn't believe that Levi was acting in such a manner. He could be a real drama queen sometimes. The sass Levi possessed was incredible.
"What, are you some sort of psychiatrist now?" Levi finally moved his gaze to look at Nico, as much as he didn't want to.
"Can you stop acting like such a drama queen?" Nico quipped. Levi scoffed at his words.
"I have every right to be pissed right now, Nico."
"Listen, about the surgery-"
"No, drop it. I'm not talking about this right now." Levi stopped him before he could say anything else. Levi wasn't about to let this situation pass over like it was nothing. The surgery was something extremely important to him and he got kicked off of it like it was nothing.
Nico took in a deep breath as he stood from the chair, the legs of it scraping against the floor with a screech. The sound made Levi cringe. "I couldn't have said anything that would have kept you on that surgery!"
"Yes, you could have!" Levi argued back, also standing up from his chair. He stood up with so much force that the chair flew back and landed against the floor with a loud thud. He made his way around the table so he could stand in front of Nico. "I worked tirelessly for three weeks to help assist on that surgery, you stood by me and helped me every step of the way!"
"Levi, keep your voice-"
"No, let me speak! That surgery was a massive deal for me. It was a huge stepping stone for my career as a surgeon. I didn't get on that surgery just because of you. I got on that surgery because I worked hard and I proved that I could do it. I didn't get on that surgery because of 'special treatment', or whatever. I missed out on a huge opportunity today, all because you didn't stand up for me."
"Woah, you're blaming this on me now?" Nico almost seemed to laugh, tearing his gaze from Levi to take a moment to compose himself. There was no way that it was Nico's fault.
"Yeah, I'm blaming you. Why didn't you say something, Nico? You knew how much I wanted this and you just let it slip away from me." Levi let out a shaky breath as he finished, wrapping his arms around his stomach, his expression melting into something that resembled hurt.
"I had no power to say anything, Levi. It was purely Link and Jackson's decision to make." Nico explained, taking a step towards Levi, in hopes that he would be able to comfort him.
"I could have proven that I am more than what people think of me. I could have proven that I could do it. You had just as much say as Link or Jackson in that situation. That surgery could have actually really helped me to progress, to learn and see what happens in situations like that. You didn't say anything because you didn't want me in that room, did you?" Levi's brows furrowed together, the very thought of Nico not saying anything purely because of their little argument earlier that morning made his stomach twist. It felt awful.
"No, Levi. Why would you even think that?" Nico couldn't believe Levi had even thought of such a thing.
"It doesn't really matter now, does it? The surgery is done and over with. Listen, I have uh... Stuff, to do. I'll speak to you later. I just want to be alone right now." Levi mentioned, his voice low as he spoke, almost a whisper. Nico let out a sigh as he nodded, realizing he wasn't going to get anything else out of Levi.
Just a few moments later and Nico had left, leaving Levi to tidy up his study notes before he had to head back out to check on his patients.
-
The rest of the day had passed in a blur. Before he really knew what was happening, he was rushing after Nico, telling him that he loved him. Yes, he had really just told Nico that he loved him. Which was very, very true. Levi wasn't going to deny it. There was no way he could.
Levi loved Nico with all his heart, which was both exciting and terrifying at the same time. It was a completely new feeling for Levi to have to experience for the first time. The nerves that ran through his body when he finally uttered those three words to Nico were almost enough to stop him from saying it.
Now, he was cuddled up with Nico, watching the end of a movie together. It had been an eventful day full of many conflicting emotions that Levi couldn't quite fully begin to understand. However, even though it seemed that the arguments of that day had been long forgotten, the lingering feeling of hurt had stayed deep within Levi.
"I don't get these kinds of movies," Nico sighed, cocking his head a little to the side as he watched the screen. "The dogs don't even talk and yet we seem to understand everything they want to say. They don't even really have a way of showing emotion other than wagging their tail or bearing their teeth. It's so strange."
"Do you really have to analyze every movie we watch?" Levi laughed a little, shifting himself a little so he could look up at Nico. Nico lifted his shoulder's in a slight shrug.
"It just baffles me," Nico commented, eyes still locked onto the movie. Levi grinned to himself, taking a moment to admire the man he loved so dearly.
"Oh, so a complicated surgery doesn't stump you, but understanding animals emotions does? Nico Kim, you sure are a weird man." Levi joked, sitting up from where he been cuddled into Nico's side. Nico finally tore his gaze away from the screen to look at Levi, who was stretching his arms above his head, his muscles sore from having been working all day.
"You're not still mad about the surgery, are you?" Nico raised a brow, hoping that Levi wasn't about to bring it up again.
When Levi was finally done stretching, he looked at Nico, a tired grin tugging at the corner of his lips. He shook his head slightly, letting out a short sigh. "No, I don't think I am. There will be other opportunities for me. I got to save a man's life today, and potentially save his daughters too."
"I heard about that," Nico shifted in his seat so he could face Levi a little more. "Bailey mentioned how proud she was of you. You saved a life today, Levi. I just turned someone's ankle into a knee."
"I guess you're right." Levi couldn't hide the bright smile that spread across his lips. He really had saved a life today. Two, potentially. Maybe missing out on the rotationplasty wasn't such a bad thing after all?
"So, I think you may have won the surgery lottery today. I can't believe my boyfriend is a life-saver." A cheeky grin tugged at Nico's lips as he spoke. Levi let out a whine, hiding his face in his hands to hide the fact he was blushing.
"Why do you have to be so cheesy all the time?" Levi removed his hands from his face, resting them in his lap as he stared at Nico, his bottom lip jutted out in a pout. Nico let out a low chuckle, a sense of pride washing over him. He always enjoyed teasing Levi. His reactions never failed to amuse Nico.
"I like seeing you blush. You're really adorable when you react the way you do."
"Oh, shut up." Levi quipped, lowering his head to hide the smile gracing his face.
Nico watched on in awe of Levi, unable to comprehend how beautiful he truly was. Nico sat himself up, reaching out to take Levi's hands in his own, stroking his thumb across the back of Levi's hand softly. Levi looked up at Nico, his cheeks still somewhat flushed a light shade of pink. "I love you. So, so much. You truly are incredible, Levi Schmitt."
"I love you, too," Levi muttered back, giving Nico's hands a subtle squeeze as he leaned forward, closing the gap between them, pressing his lips against Nico's in a soft, tender kiss. Nico dropped Levi's hands, his hands coming up to rest against Levi's neck, ever so slightly pulling him in closer. His thumb grazed against Levi's cheek as they kissed, Levi's hands coming to rest against Nico's waist.
At the end of the day, yes, Levi was upset he didn't get to scrub in on the surgery he'd waited weeks for. But he wouldn't trade-in this moment with Nico for anything else in the entire world.
Timely stories, inspiring legions of medical students and empowering women (and its cast): showrunner Krista Vernoff and star Ellen Pompeo and the rest of the cast talk with The Hollywood Reporter about breaking 'ER's' record as TV's longest-running medical drama.
Two weeks before Grey's Anatomy's March 2005 series debut, series star Ellen Pompeo thought her ABC medical drama was, in her words, "dead in the water."
"The day the network changed our title to Complications it was like someone died in here," leading lady Pompeo tells The Hollywood Reporter from the show's L.A. set during an early January visit.
The title change would not stick. Two days later, ABC would revert back to Grey's Anatomy and, now, 14 years and 332 episodes later, Grey's Anatomy, with Thursday's installment, will break ER's status as TV's longest-running primetime medical drama.
It's a feat that creator Shonda Rhimes and showrunner Krista Vernoff, who spent the first seven seasons working under the former, never expected during the show's early days.
"After we produced 10 of our 12 episodes that first year, I went away to make a pilot and my assistant stayed behind in L.A. and she called me and said, 'They're making us pack up our offices.' They made us move out. They didn't think we were getting a season two," says Vernoff, who worked with former ER showrunner John Wells on Showtime's Shameless before being hand-picked by Rhimes to take over Grey's in season 14. "We owe a huge debt of gratitude to ER — without it, Grey's wouldn't exist. … We have surprised everybody — and ourselves. The staying power is amazing."
And the Seattle-set drama really does have some staying power. Seriously. It ranks as ABC's No. 1 series for the 2018-19 broadcast season with an impressive average of a 3.1 rating among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic. Grey's is also, sources say, one of Netflix's top performing acquired series. The streamer has helped bring in a new legion of viewers that further propels first-run originals on ABC. What's more, Grey's has global reach: It is the key asset among all the Shondaland shows that have been licensed in more than 235 territories worldwide and dubbed in more than 67 languages. Grey's remains a top performer for foreign broadcasters and has been adapted into localized versions in Mexico, Colombia and Turkey. The series remains a top-performing U.S. drama abroad.
"It's a $4 billion business and it's everywhere in the world," says Pompeo, who ranks as TV's highest-paid leading lady on a primetime drama series with $20 million per season (plus points of the show's lucrative back end and producing fees). Adds Vernoff: "Shonda says I'm leading a multibillion-dollar worldwide corporation but if I think about that for too long, I won't be able to get out of bed!"
Global Reach Every single one of the current 11 Grey's series regulars has a story about the impact of their show. Most of them include anecdotes from viewers — and their children — about entering the medical field and becoming surgeons and nurses because of Grey's. "Graduating female surgeons have gone through the roof since Grey's Anatomy started," says Caterina Scorsone, who is the only (primetime, live-action) actor to start on a spinoff as series regular and wind up holding the same status on the original series.
Kevin McKidd — who was originally cast as a love interest for Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang and has now appeared in more Grey's episodes than the Killing Eve star did during her tenure — was recognized a few years ago on a dirt road in the "middle of nowhere in Mozambique," where he was helping a doctor friend improve conditions at a local hospital. "To see that in the farthest reaches of a very poor and struggling country there was this show that inspires people was pretty emotional," he says.
TV legend Debbie Allen, who exec produces, directs and has a recurring role, says she's now approached more about her time on Grey's than her iconic part on Fame. "I was in Cuba and accosted by these young girls who were screaming, 'Katherine Avery!'" she says with a laugh.
Giacomo Gianniotti, who has been a regular since season 12, is now repeatedly spotted in his home of Italy. "Because I'm Italian, there's this pride — like one of us made it to America and made it on our show that we watch," he says. "I traveled to Kenya doing some volunteer work this summer and a lot of people approached me to say they love Grey's. The reach is just huge."
Sums up Pompeo, who had an impact off-screen when she fought for her record-breaking salary: "Everywhere I go I get, 'My daughter is a surgeon because of you.'"
Empowering From the Start Grey's was the first TV series creator Rhimes got on the air. (ABC previously passed on a Rhimes drama about female war correspondents). Grey's broke out in season two and became a cultural phenomenon, contributing terms like "vajayjay" and "McDreamy" to pop culture. Grey's has also birthed two spinoffs — Private Practice, which ran for six seasons and 111 episodes — and Station 19, which is currently in its second season on ABC. The success of Grey's has led to other opportunities for Rhimes, who really broke out with ABC's political soap Scandal. That series built on Rhimes' penchant for color blind casting on Grey's. (Former star Isaiah Washington nearly played the McDreamy part that went to Patrick Dempsey, while network execs expected Oh's role of Cristina to be played by a white actress.)
"When they had me come in to read for the role of chief of surgery, I hadn't seen an African-American in that kind of role before," says James Pickens Jr., who remembers sitting next to Rhimes at the 2005 upfronts when she hoped to get five or seven episodes on the air. "Grey's is more than just entertainment. Shonda always wanted to make sure that the show impacted the landscape in a way that we hadn't seen before on TV. I like to think that Grey's had a big part in how the industry casts shows."
In addition to Rhimes' breakout success — she left her longtime home at ABC Studios last year for a $300 million Netflix overall deal — the cast has also been able to add to their skillsets. Grey's has launched directing careers for stars including showrunner Vernoff, Pompeo (who made her debut in season 14), Jesse Williams, McKidd and Wilson, the latter of whom helmed Thursday's record-breaking hour. (Former star Sarah Drew also earned an Emmy nomination last year for directing a Grey's digital short.)
"The atmosphere here is if you want to try something, you're encouraged," says Wilson, who along with Pompeo, Justin Chambers and Pickens is one of the four remaining original stars.
For Williams, that outlook has also afforded him the opportunity to build up his own businesses. "Grey's has made a home for me so that I can launch three tech companies and can go on speaking tours and live a life. A lot of that has to do with being on a show that's run by women and people who can actually multitask," says Williams, who will direct again this season.
Grey's has also created a safe space for its (many!) pregnant stars, who have always been afforded job security. Wilson, for her part, thought she'd be written out of the series when she told Rhimes of her pregnancy early on in the show's run. Instead, it was written into Bailey's season two storyline (and the character's son is now old enough to have been featured in a season 14 episode exploring unconscious bias).
"Instead of shunning it and hoping you don't get pregnant, I watch producers actively encourage all of our actors to have a family," Williams says. "That is the formula and secret for longevity: feeding into a healthy life and happiness instead of running from it or trying to press you out of it."
Opening Hearts, Changing Minds Beyond creating a new legion of directors and producers (Pompeo has an overall deal with ABC Studios and produces both Grey's and Station 19), the long-running medical drama has made an impact on-screen with empowering storylines. More recently, Grey's has explored domestic violence with Camilla Luddington's Jo, unconscious bias and new stories for transgender characters. Grey's this season features a same-sex relationship with its first openly gay male surgeon (Alex Landi, whose Nico is romancing Jake Borelli's intern, Schmitt) as part of its "Season of Love." The latter is especially true for Pompeo's Meredith, who is now exploring serious relationships after losing her "person" when Dempsey's Derek was shockingly killed off back in season 11.
"The most empowering storyline for me has been to portray a woman who has lost the love of their life and what does life look like having to continue on after losing the right side of your body? Did his departure mean I no longer mattered or my magic and chemistry was somehow gone? We saw that I could stand on my own and that women who do lose their partners or children, there is a way for people to go on. To be able to portray someone who could go through the hardest thing you could go through — the death of a loved one — and to be able to portray the survival of that is the most meaningful," a tearful Pompeo says, comparing Meredith's loss to the passing of her own mother at a young age. "After that, you think you can't go on. … So it's all come full circle."
Other cast members point to medical storylines that have helped viewers diagnose loved ones. Wilson is especially proud of the cyclic vomiting syndrome episode, while Chambers singles out exploring mental illness with Alex's mother in a storyline first planted in the show's early days. But all involved can point to several subjects the series has explored that have helped open minds and let viewers see versions of themselves on TV.
"Callie and Arizona's wedding was a really big deal and you think of the different countries that the episode was broadcast in and they may not have thought they were ready for big things like that," Williams says. "Whether it was the transgender young woman I just met who felt like she was included because she saw a trans patient whose storyline wasn't focused on her trans-ness, or the police violence episode — which is close to the work that I do — the running theme is allowing people to feel seen and considered."
And sometimes the impact Grey's is making is subtler than a storyline or patient.
"I've had black women say that I'm the reason they decided to go natural with their hair," says Kelly McCreary, who has played Meredith's half-sister, Maggie, since the end of season 10. "If seeing me on screen representing our hair in its natural state freed viewers from any ideas they had about that being bad, unattractive or unprofessional or whatever else they're trying to feed us about it, that's remarkable."
Doing Something New (That Still Feels Familiar) Everyone on the Grey's call sheet will give credit for the show's creative and ratings resurgence to Vernoff, who as Chambers says, "hit a refresh button and reinvigorated the show." Kim Raver, who reprises her role as Teddy after previously serving as a series regular for seasons six through eight, feels the same old-school energy now that she did a decade ago and credits Vernoff for "infusing the quintessential Shonda Rhimes vibe of it." And while Vernoff smiles when told of the cast's kind words for her work, she is aware of the power that comes with writing for a beloved character like Pompeo's Meredith Grey.
"When Meredith Grey speaks, people listen," says Vernoff, who recently signed a big overall deal with ABC Studios. "There is so much darkness and so much to be frightened of and this show has so much impact. People have grown up with Meredith. So, my goal is to have a voice on the planet and to have an impact: to change hearts and minds."
Vernoff is aware that she is already achieving that impact. The showrunner — who has been outspoken about timely issues surrounding Hollywood including the #MeToo movement, salary parity and more — recalled a recent conversation with Rhimes in which the Grey's creator shared a story from a makeup artist who noted that his brother is a Korean gay man and was moved to see himself represented on screen. Other highlights include hearing from a current Grey's writers PA who wrote a letter sharing a story about experiencing his father's death at the age of 16 and finding solace in a storyline with George (T.R. Knight) and Cristina talking about the "Dead Dad's Club."
"To put my painful loss on TV and help other people through that is deeply meaningful to me," Vernoff says of the origin of that storyline.
As for what comes next, Vernoff did not want to write in a wink and nod to ER — fitting given her relationship with Wells on Shameless and the fact that the former NBC medical drama was one of the series that made her want to be a TV writer in the first place. Instead, Vernoff opted to do something that Grey's had never done before.
"In the 300th episode we did a huge number of winks at the show's history and beginnings. I don't know if ERdid it or not but what I came up with was a no-medicine episode," Vernoff says of the Grey's first. Adds McCreary: "We're in this party scene and I keep waiting for somebody to need a tracheotomy! But instead it's great because it feels like a real celebration of these characters."
Meaningful Milestone As the episode doubles as a celebration of sorts of the record-breaking milestone, the stars all share the same refrain when asked about the significance of doing a whopping 332 hours of television. All involved recall their initial shock that the series few thought would work has become the powerhouse franchise it is today.
"My goal was to do the pilot, take the check and pay some bills!" Wilson recalls with a laugh. Adds Chambers: "When we were in season two, I'd say to everybody, 'Do you think we've got two more years? I just wanted to get my kids to college.' And now some of them are done with it!" Pompeo also points to the record's value in the current TV landscape where viewers have an option to pick from nearly 500 scripted series and 700-plus unscripted offerings on an array of platforms as competition for eyeballs expands to other forms of entertainment like video games and podcasts.
"The fact that we're still the network's No. 1 drama and can stay afloat in this landscape after 15 years is incredible," Pompeo says. "It's also incredible in a larger sense because it's something that I resisted [and] that I said I would never do."
For his part, Williams has now appeared in more than two-thirds of Grey's Anatomy's total episodes after first joining the cast as recurring player Jackson Avery in season six. It's a jarring fact for the actor who initially thought the show would only be around for only a few more seasons when he first signed on. He now scoffs at those who use Grey's Anatomy as a punchline.
"That response — 'Oh, Grey's is still on' — at first, I took offense to it but now I don't because it's not really about our show; it's about the business because shows don't last that long," says Williams, whose tech companies are all inspired by the message of visibility he sees every day on Grey's. "I'm really proud of what we do here — I wouldn't be here this long if I wasn't."
The Future While Grey's has not officially been renewed for its 16th season, it's considered a lock as Pompeo's deal covers the 2019-2020 broadcast season. ABC Entertainment president Karey Burke and ABC Studios topper Patrick Moran both bow before what Pompeo and Grey's have been able to accomplish. "We are awed by this rare and incredible achievement," Moran says. "To make 15 seasons of television that are creatively fresh and compelling — and now record breaking — is almost unheard of, but Shonda, Betsy Beers, Krista, Ellen and the incredible cast and crew have managed to do that. We're very proud of this show and this team." Adds Burke: "How fitting and well deserved it is for Grey's Anatomy — a show that never ceases to inspire, surprise and move us — to achieve something no other primetime medical drama can lay claim to. The creative bar set by Shonda, Betsy, Krista, Ellen and the entire cast and crew will keep this iconic show in rarefied air for generations, and as one of their millions of fans, I congratulate them on this historic milestone."
Pompeo, too, knows she has experienced something special in her decade and a half on Grey's, where she has been afforded a rare ability to evolve Meredith as a character while growing as an actor and producer. "I've come full circle on this show from being an actor with no voice, no say and terrified to speak up or advocate for myself in any way," Pompeo says. "I'm now someone who is heard here and who has a say here. I'm one of my bosses and that's an unusual situation for an actress in Hollywood — to get to say what I want and what I don't. If I left the show, I don't think I'd have that same situation anywhere."
That's not to say Pompeo hasn't toyed with the idea of leaving Grey's over the years. The actress has been candid many times about experiencing the nagging pull many stars on veteran series experience as they consider leaving and taking on new and different roles. But at the end of the day, the idea of stepping away from something as big as what Grey's Anatomy has become has proven impossible.
"You can't ignore the worldwide phenomenon that this show is. How do you walk away or ignore that?" Pompeo says. "Being the face and voice of something that can generate that much money, there's only a very small number of people who can say that they have achieved that. If you're lucky enough to be the face and voice of something that's generated billions of dollars for a network, that's something to be proud of."
Meanwhile, Pickens is in talks for a new deal that would see him continue on as Grey's Anatomy's elder statesman Richard Webber. ("Nothing is solid yet but more than likely, I'll be here," he says.) Pickens adds the thought of going after Gunsmoke or Law & Order: SVU — the latter of which will break the former's record as TV's longest-running primetime drama series when it is renewed for its 21st season — remains "intriguing." Wilson, for her part, has one goal in mind now that Grey's has snapped ER's streak. "I would love to be a starter and a finisher of a thing," says the original star, whose contract is also up this season. "When the show is ready for that last shot, I want to be in that."
Seeing Ghosts Of the many notable cast departures, Vernoff, Pompeo and the cast all have quick answers at the ready when asked about which former Grey's co-stars they'd like to bring back to Prospect Studios:
Pompeo (Meredith): "I would love for Sandra Oh to be on the show but not more than I love seeing Sandra Oh out there in the world doing her thing. Not more than I love seeing her shine on her own at the Golden Globes and on Killing Eve. So I would say no [to that]. I love everybody who has been on this show, regardless of their time here and whether it was tumultuous or not."
Chambers (Alex): "Richard Herrmann. He played my intern for a while and was such a joy to work with. He passed on but I felt very lucky to work with him."
Wilson (Bailey): "Bailey was crazy about George O'Malley. But the thing about our show is we always keep our past characters alive; there is nobody we don't ever not talk about because every one of those characters has been the foundation for why we're here."
Pickens (Richard): "I've been in this business almost 40 years and Sandra Oh brought something very special to every scene."
McKidd (Owen): "Sandra Oh's Cristina, especially the way things are right now with Amelia, Teddy and Owen. To throw her into the mix at the same time? Owen would literally keel over and never get up again."
Raver (Teddy): "Sandra Oh. I started off having crazy, intense scenes with her — like when Henry (Scott Foley) was dying and I love her as a friend and admire her as an actress."
Williams (Jackson): "Frances Conroy. She was here in season seven and I didn't get to work with her. She is tremendous and was on one of my favorite shows ever: Six Feet Under."
Luddington (Jo): "Kyle Chandler. I love Friday Night Lights."
Scorsone (Amelia): "Chyler Leigh (Lexie). She is so much fun and is great with drama and comedy. I'm sad that I didn't get to work with her more."
McCreary (Maggie): "Kate Burton. I'd love for Maggie and Ellis to interact. Kate and I did a play together in 2014. She's one of my favorite people."
Gianniotti (DeLuca): "Jessica Capshaw. We would laugh until snot was coming out of our noses. I miss having her around."
Allen (Katherine): "I had so much fun directing Patrick Dempsey when he was here. I nicknamed him Dash because he would come on the set, look at his watch and want to keep it moving. He never liked to do a lot of takes but was always great. I didn't get to act with him but I did some of his best scenes while I was here. We think of him fondly."
Vernoff (showrunner): "Sandra Oh. I miss writing for Sandra and Cristina."
Am I really sitting here, taking the time to write out a review for P.T. Barnum's autobiography? Why yes, yes I am. Now, P.T. Barnum was not a good man. We all know this, and if you let Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Barnum in "The Greatest Showman" take over your idea of what real Barnum was like, well, that's your own damn problem. That being said, I do love The Greatest Showman - can we say, favorite movie? - and, as I said above, it's your own fault if you can't do research for yourself. After watching the movie, I had a few dollars left on a Christmas gift card and Barnum's autobiography was less than $2 on Kindle. So I thought, what the hell. It took me a damn month to read it, but I did finally finish it and, hell, I'm glad I did. P.T. Barnum was an asshole, yes, and he did treat those with disabilities like shit, yes. That's all true. However, one thing I think we all need to remember is the time period in which he lived. Real Barnum was born in 1810 in Connecticut (his birthday is the day after America's Independence Day, actually) and died in 1891, aged 80, also in Connecticut. He sat down to write this autobiography in the 1850s - that's before the Civil War even happened! Put that into perspective. Yes, he was an asshole. Yes, he - along with 99% of the population - treated literally anyone with differences like they were freaks. He was literally known for it! But he, just like everybody else who lived then, was a product of his time. That's what's so important to remember. They were not NEARLY as tolerant then as we are now - hell, the South still had SLAVES when the autobiography was written. People were exploited for PROFIT because "normal" people were disgusted and/or fascinated by them. We cannot go back and change history, no, but people should not be crucified for finding interest in the... mindset of folks like Real Barnum (as opposed to Hugh Jackman's Barnum) back then. I've always been fascinated by history and the fact that we've come so far in a relatively short amount of time. Many, MANY historical events were harmful, yes. But there is no harm in wanting to simply learn more. Now, I'm saying that as a (at the time of this review) 19 year old who's been physically disabled - to the point of having needed a dozen surgeries over the first eight years of her life - her whole, entire life. Had it been possible for me to live back then (thank you, heckin medical advancements), I would have been a PERFECT example of a person Real Barnum would have wanted to use and abuse for his "shows" and "exhibits." But... that was then. This is now. Real Barnum has been dead for almost 130 years now, and his show - Barnum & Bailey - was shut down last year. It's a permanent mark in American history, and there is no longer any harm in wanting to learn more so long as you accept that people *aren't* and *can't be* treated like that any longer. I think the thing that fascinates me most about reading Real Barnum's autobiography is the fact that... he had a childhood. He was a child once, just like the rest of us, that he was fond of. He had a grandfather (*cough* who highkey looked like Elton John *cough*) that he was extremely fond of and close to, he had siblings - including a brother with whom he shared his bedroom, and who would try to catch him when he (PT Barnum) snuck out at night), and he was fond of pranks and practical jokes. Hell, there's an entire section of this book where Barnum details a prank war he had - as an adult - with a news reporter known as James Bennett. (No wonder movie-verse Bennett hated the circus so much)! And I think when somebody has a tainted reputation such as Barnum's, it's rather interesting - and totally mind-boggling - to read about them in their innocent moments. Especially when they're being written down and detailed by the man himself. Speaking of Real Barnum's word, there are several cases - such as the woman who claimed to be George Washington's slave - that are infamous in the case against Barnum that I found EXTREMELY interesting to read from his word - essentially getting the other side (no pun intended) of the story. In the case of the woman he claimed was George Washington's slave, for example, HE claims that SHE told him that she was a hundred and sixty (or however old the age was) when she was, in reality, something like seventy or eighty. According to his written word, he took her word for it (A+ background checks there, Mr. Barnum) and the truth of her age was never revealed until she died and they did an autopsy. I guess in an over century-year-old case of "he said, she said," we can never really 100% know the truth regarding who deceived who. But IF he's right in reporting that he truly did not know this woman's real age, then I find it absolutely fucking *hysterical* that the infamous conman himself got conned. I think that's all I, really, have to say on the matter, I think. Everyone has their own opinions on what sort of acknowledgment P.T. Barnum should receive and I prefer to stay out of that, for the most part, though I do love The Greatest Showman and am truly glad that I decided to pick up this read because of it. Though it did take me a month, the writing style actually was not hard to follow at ALL, which I find incredibly surprising. Though Barnum is a 19th century man, he has an almost... contemporary style of writing, with only slight language modifications from translators and historians. So, if you're into history like I am, I do genuinely recommend at least checking out this book. P.T. Barnum is, and was, an interesting man... that's for sure. (also, I find it HYSTERICAL that real Barnum was against alcohol and yet the film Greatest Showman featured Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron practically seducing each other in a bar. A+ work there, filmwriters)
Grey's Anatomy: Fight for Your Mind (14x22)
Okay, Grey's, what is with that promo for next week? If you kill April Kepner I will throw such a fit. But let's not talk about that yet, let's talk about this week.
Cons:
I still don't know what I think of Amelia and Owen living together with the baby and the baby mama. Looks like Amelia's flight-risk drug addict teen did indeed run away, and I found myself a) not surprised, and b) not caring. The whole scenario feels so very soap opera-y. Which I know this show is, but usually I really care about the people involved, and I'm finding it hard to do that in this case, for whatever reason.
One of the larger problems with Grey's over all is that the focus on the kids is always really inconsistent. It's been easy to see for a while now that Arizona's exit will be because she needs to move to New York with Sofia. That's fine, or whatever, but the fact of the matter is, we didn't really get to see why this came about. We know Sofia has been having a really rough time since coming to live with Arizona, but weren't we told that she wanted to come? The whole thing is confusing and weird. The kids only become important when needed for some plot reason.
Pros:
The funniest plot of the night for me was Bailey and Webber trying to come to a settlement agreement with Dr. Roy, the intern who was fired for being high and lying about it. I mean, I know this plot thread took serious liberties with the way that the legal system would react to this situation, but still. The recurring refrain of "your honor" every time pieces of the story were contemplated was great, like when Schmidt says that firing Dr. Roy was the right thing to do, because when Bailey was high and standing over a patient she had opened up, she made the right call and stepped away. Or what about the story about the patient who tried to cut off his own hand for masturbating? The context is so important with stories like this. It was also great that Bailey didn't compromise her standards. She decides to let Dr. Roy come back, but she refuses to give him an apology he doesn't deserve. The nature of this show is such that everybody has made horrible mistakes and done monstrous things. Just because Dr. Roy is a bit of a dick doesn't mean he shouldn't get a second chance like everybody else has gotten. Still, he better watch himself. Dr. Bailey doesn't mess around.
Despite being annoyed that the importance of children yo-yos on this show depending on plot needs, I actually really liked Arizona's plot thread. She works with a patient who has an intense phobia of hospitals, due to the fact that when she was a child, her father died during a basic appendectomy. Now, this woman needs to get surgery to help her unborn child, but she's so petrified of having surgery that she bails and runs out. Arizona sits with her and talks about her own life experiences and helps her get through this horrible traumatic event. The woman and her unborn child are both fine in the end, and it helps Arizona realize that she needs to do what's best for Sofia, no matter what. I really liked the scared patient, and I liked hearing Arizona tell her story - it's easy to forget she's an amputee, so it's nice to hear a bit about that and to remember Arizona's beginnings on the show, when she used to roller-skate around the hospital. It felt like a good, appropriate plot thread to give to her since we know we'll be saying goodbye in just a couple of short weeks. (pssst Shonda, we need more queer people on this show now that Penny, Callie, and Arizona are all going to be gone).
Alex and Jo's plot thread was wholly disconnected from the hospital, but I didn't mind that at all. The two of them travel to Iowa to find out what has happened to Alex's mom. He is expecting the worst, but he learns that actually she is doing better - she has gotten her old job working at a local library back, and is keeping to a routine that's really working for her. Alex is somewhat upset that his mom didn't tell him she was better, and this seems to upset her. I loved watching Alex struggle with this enormously complicated situation. Jo takes him to the batting cages to work off some aggression, which is just such a creative, supportive thing for her to think of. Alex practices healthy communication with his fiance and lets out some of his anger. His situation feels so true to life. He always wanted a healthy mother, but all during the time growing up when he really could have used her, she wasn't able to be there for him. And now, after everything, her recovery seems to be damaged by his very presence. Imagine how frustrating that would be!
Of course, their reconciliation is super adorable. Alex helps his mom change the due-date stamp, something he used to do for her when he was a little boy, and then Alex introduces his mom to Jo. I like that the situation is a little awkward, and that not everything is instantly fixed. For example, Jo invites her to the wedding, but travel is too stressful for her, so she probably won't be able to come. Baby steps. I really appreciated this nuanced plot thread. Lots of good moments, and some tough material as well.
A brief subplot shows that Jackson is paying settlements out of his own pocket because the Catherine Fox foundation money needs to go to keeping the hospitals up and running. He puts money aside to make sure Harriett is taken care of, but he may be facing financial ruin if things break bad for him. I like that we've got this ongoing plot thread focusing on Jackson's absurd wealth. I'm glad that it's going towards something worthwhile. And I'm glad that he's weathering the storm and making amends for his grandfather's disgusting behavior, even though he shouldn't have to do that.
And speaking of Harper Avery being the literal worst, we should end this review by talking about Meredith Grey. She is about to give a talk about her mini-livers, but ends up talking to a nice man in the bar beforehand. The two really hit it off, even though when he finds out who she is, he confesses that he's always kind of hated her because she got to a medical breakthrough before him and took all the glory. Meredith tells this guy the whole story with Marie Cerone, and it helps her realize the right thing to do. Before her presentation, she says that the Grey Method should now be known as the Grey-Cerone method. However, after her talk, Meredith indicates quite clearly that she can't forgive Marie for stabbing her in the back.
Give Meredith a new boyfriend 2K18. I liked this random guy in the bar and I hope he comes back. Ellen Pompeo is good at being charming even if she is a little intense. Also, I love the way the Cerone plot thread resolved itself. I had a lot of doubts about it, and thought that Meredith's focus on legacy and recognition was a little bit conceited and shortsighted. But now I see how complex the situation is. Meredith righted the wrongs of Harper Avery and Ellis Grey by giving Marie Cerone her due. But that doesn't mean she forgives Cerone for trying to screw her over in her own professional successes. This was a great balance.
As I mentioned at the start of this review, I'm going to be LIVID if they kill off April Kepner after everything they've put her through this season. Still, I'm all for a bit of good old fashioned Grey's Anatomy angst!
Whether it's amorous couples sneaking a private moment together, grand romantic gestures, doctors having meltdowns, or lives being saved, the elevator at Grey Sloan Memorial in the long-running Shondaland medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, has seen a lot. In fact, it is as much a vital location on the show as is the hospital itself.
RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: The Main Characters, Ranked By Work Ethic
The elevator plays a pivotal role in Meredith and Derek's love story, but it has also given fans some very memorable moments involving the other doctors, as well. A few of these moments have been funny, some have been heart-stopping, but most of them have been romantic or high on the emotional quotient, as is typical of this beloved series.
10 Addison Talking To The Elevator God
Tumblr media
Addison Montgomery Shepherd left Seattle Grace hospital to join the Practice in sunny L.A. in what became the Grey's Anatomy spin-off, Private Practice. The spin-off happened after Addison was shown visiting her friend Naomi, an episode that also acted as a backdoor pilot for the new series.
Of course, Addison had to meet Pete for the first time inside the elevator at the practice, and she has a hilariously funny moment when she tells him about how elevators have an aphrodisiac effect on people in Seattle, referring to the romance that the Seattle Grace elevators saw every day. Pete is convinced that she might be a tad crazy, but he's also attracted to her. Later, Addison vents to the "elevator god" and she then finds out that it was the security person, Tilly, all along.
9 The Awkward Foursome
Tumblr media
Yet another memorable elevator moment happened when Derek was cooped up in the elevator, not just with Meredith or Addison, but with both of them along with Rose, who he dated for a while to make Meredith jealous.
The foursome stood in very awkward silence in a laugh-out-loud moment, which is exactly what Mark Sloan did when the elevator opened for him on the next floor. He immediately caught on to the comedic element of the situation and couldn't help but have a laugh at Derek's embarrassment.
8 The Hello Kitty Moment
Tumblr media
The iconic Hello Kitty bandaid is seared into the memory of any Grey's fan. Meredith tried to hide a pimple on her forehead with the adorably cute band-aid and, of course, ended up alone in the elevator with Derek.
RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 10 Couples That Shouldn't Have Worked, But Did
Meredith can't help but tell Derek that she misses him, and the sexual chemistry between them is palpable. Derek comes close to Meredith and his very breath on her neck makes her shiver. The scene is a classic MerDer moment, with the elevator playing cupid.
7 Nico & Levi Share Their First Kiss
Tumblr media
Nico and Levi finally give in to their desires in the elevator, marking the beginning of what eventually led to the series' first gay love scene.
The scene was cut short when Levi mentioned that this was his first time kissing another man. Nico informed him that he had already come out and didn't necessarily want to get involved with Levi whilst he was working to understand his sexuality. The moment was short-lived but a landmark, nonetheless.
6 A Wounded Alex Dragging Himself To The Elevator
Tumblr media
In the thrilling penultimate moment of the season 6 finale, one of the first people the gunman Gary Clerk shot on his way to Derek was Alex Karev.
Alex appeared on the scene right after Reed had been shot and was then shot himself. The graphic scene was overwhelming, and soon after, Alex managed to somehow drag himself into the closest elevator. This is how Lexie and Mark find him, passed out in the elevator, later on.
5 Bailey Lets Derek Take A Moment
Tumblr media
One of the more touching associations, which was unfortunately never developed into a full-fledged friendship, was that between Derek and Miranda. The two shared some valuable moments when Miranda would make it clear that she wasn't afraid of Derek simply because he was an attending. They then end up opening up to each other in a way that was both sweet and mature.
RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: The 10 Best Friendships On The Show
One of the most beautiful moments the two shared came in the episode, "Into You Like A Train," when the young woman who had been in a devastating train accident passed away after asking Derek to pass a message on to her boyfriend. Derek was deeply moved by the tragedy and when he and Miranda were riding the elevator, the latter realized he needed to minute to calm down and so she stopped the elevator. It was a lovely moment between two people who understood and respected each other.
4 Charles Percy Dying In Bailey's Arms
Tumblr media
This wasn't so much an elevator scene as it was one that had to do with the elevator. Charles Percy was one of the residents who was shot and killed during the season 6 finale, "Death And All His Friends." Miranda did everything in her power to save his life.
With her patient Mary's help, Miranda managed to drag Charles to an elevator so that she could take him to an OR and operate on him. However, with the hospital being in lockdown because of the shooting, the elevators were all deactivated, and she couldn't get to the OR in time. In one of the most powerful scenes in the series, Charles died in her lap and Miranda wiped her tears bravely, being there for him until the very end.
3 DeLuca & Meredith
Tumblr media
The handsome Dr. Andrew DeLuca had been, for a good while, the potential significant other for Meredith Grey, after her husband's tragic death. And, one of the most memorable scenes the two shared happened in the elevator.
The power was down in the whole hospital and the elevators stopped working, with several doctors trapped inside them. Meredith and DeLuca were in one elevator, and the latter was clearly smitten by the brilliant general surgeon. He told Meredith about his father's past transgressions, and then about how much he would like to kiss her, all in Italian, just to make the heart thump a bit faster. Of course, he didn't know that Meredith actually understood Italian, which probably made him fall in love with her even more.
2 Elevator Love Letter
Tumblr media
Of course, one of the most iconic elevator scenes for Grey's fans is Derek Shepherd's proposal to Meredith Grey. It made sense, somehow, that the elevator that had been witness to so much of their drama, should be the place where they finally sealed their fates together.
RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 10 People Meredith Should Have Been With (Other Than Derek)
Derek, with Richard's help, set up a whole scene inside the elevator with scans and reports from various patients they had saved together, including Katie Bryce, their first save, and Izzie Stevens, the most recent. Derek doesn't get down on one knee as he proposes, but then he doesn't need to because the elevator is itself a love letter to Meredith Grey.
1 The Open Heart Surgery
Tumblr media
And finally, the most memorable and definitely the most fascinating elevator moment happened early on in the series when George O'Malley single-handedly saved a patient's life inside the elevator by performing open-heart surgery.
George and Alex were taking a patient up to the OR when the elevator stopped and their patient's condition started worsening. Alex, always ready with his smart mouth, actually froze. It was George who took up the scalpel and followed Burke's instructions perfectly, saving the guy's life in what later became a legend that got passed on to every new generation of interns.
