Alright it’s WIP Wednesday here still…
I’m mostly working on exchange things but here’s me trying desperately to write in Varric’s voice. I hope it’s working…

I think if I dreamed I’d be walking the streets of Lowtown in my sleep. My family had an estate in Hightown but as soon as I was old enough to hold a dagger I spent all the coin I had at the Hanged Man. Not exactly the kind of place you, or my parents, would expect a dwarf from a well-off merchant family to spend his time, but that sleazy bar is more home than my family ever was.

My contribution to WIP Wednesday comes from the marginalia of a sudoku book. This is from a BTVS fic I started about two years ago as a gift, and then because of the gremlins operating my brain I allowed it to go fallow. I just read the first chapter and a half of it, and am (with no promises) inspired to finally finish it. I'm so committed, I might have to destroy a book in the process.
For those not able to decipher my scrawl, this reads:
J: Are you going to talk about intertextuality?
G: 😑 No... (as he ties his tie) Do you want me to?
J: No!
So the question is... will Jenny and Giles ever make it to Joyce's bookclub?

here's something from the next chapter of the post-btvs fic
The doors are propped open, letting in the early spring air. The first thing Miles sees as he steps through them is his mother’s face.
He recognizes the photo almost immediately—it’s from a vacation they had taken, just shortly before Miles had been bitten, a trip down the coast to visit his dad’s cousins in North Carolina. They’d stuck to the shoreline for most of the trip, taking their time. Miles had spent most of the drive on his phone, obsessively checking his email for a notification from Visions Academy.
They’d stopped to eat lunch on the beach, and his mom had all but dragged him out into the surf, barely giving him time to kick off his shoes and roll up the hems of his jeans. His dad had followed, laughing at the expression on Miles’ face, taking copious photos on his phone. Most of them had come out pretty poorly—his dad was no photographer—but he’d managed to capture this one of Rio, smiling directly into the camera, her hair made slightly wild by the wind, face illuminated by the midday sun.

Giving myself a slow start to this rainy morning and decided to accept the “anyone who wants to do it” invite from @chainofclovers for a nice end of 2022 meme
3 ships: Ava/Deborah (duh, but also currently writing three WIPs for them + running a Hacks fic event, so they’ve taken over in a major way haha); Ana/Mariana (I just finished S3 a couple days ago and really need fic to flesh out Mariana’s interior life in the final season in particular bc I can understand why she did some things she did, but we definitely weren’t shown why); and let’s go with the old favorite Supercat standby
First ever ship: first ship I read fic for was Willow/Tara (came to btvs and fandom late), but first ship where I was watching a show live and actively hoping for them to get together was definitely Rizzles (#dontmakequeerbaitliketheyusedto)
Last song: huh probably whatever was playing at the climbing gym yesterday... but I’ve got Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust playing on CD in the car so realistically something from there
Currently reading: Sally Bellerose’s Fishwives (though I’ve had to pop a bookmark in it to focus on rereading a few 19th C. novels I’ll be teaching in my upper-level lit seminar this semester)
Last movie: Finally watched Glass Onion last night, and it was a delight! Not my usual genre, but very fun!
Currently consuming: Assuming this is about food, nibbling at some salted caramel chocolate I got for Christmas (yes, it is 10am, shh I’m stressed about everything I have to do for the semester which is precisely why I’m on tumblr)
Currently watching: Just caught up on some TV during break (Wednesday, the new season of MSHD) but still need to find time to catch up on this most recent season of TLW: Gen Q and to watch the final couple episodes of Dead to Me (someone on Twitter spoiled the ending the DAY the new season dropped, so I’ve been dragging my feet a little bc now my wife doesn’t want to watch it). Oh and So Help Me Todd and Abbott Elementary come back soon!
Currently craving: Hot cocoa, which I’m trying to wait to have as a reward for finishing and publishing my course canvas page later today

For WIP Wednesday this week I give you a WIP of a sim in my current occult legacy challenge I'm doing!
Her name is Keres and her dad is the Grim Reaper.
I plan to eventually do a portrait for the heir of each generation in the challenge but for now I've just got Keres and her brother but he's not the heir

Went out on a huge limb here and finally made a GoFundMe for my teeth. I have tried to hold out and avoid going this route, but I just can't take it anymore. I haven't had a tumblr in something like five, maybe six years. I probably would have kept it that way too, just stalking like the 7-10 tumblrs of people I still like and not really participating in anything else.
Then Stranger Things came along and ate my brain. I resisted getting into that fandom for years, because I knew it would happen. Just from Steve Harrington alone. But I, like everyone else, could not resist the siren song of Eddie Munson too.
I finally caved and now I'm back. And I have to relearn the goddamn interface.

WIP Wednesday
Okay, all my WIPs have been secret for the last couple months because I’m working on exchange pieces lol so this is not exactly a WIP, but a snippet I posted on the @14daysdalovers blog recently:
Sweat and Cedar
It's been a very long time since they last got the chance to stay at an inn and Alistair is really starting to feel the grime of it. He finds himself longing for a nice clean creek. Even a cold one would be better than the algae-filled ponds and muddy rivers they've had lately. After scrubbing his armor free of darkspawn blood he lays back on the lake shore and just enjoys the stillness for a moment.
The quiet is broken by the sound of someone dropping an empty bucket next to him. "All clean?" Vela's voice rings.
"I'll never be clean again," Alistair gripes.
"Oh please," Vela laughs at his whiny tone. "Come swim with me."
"In the lake?" Alistair peers up at her incredulously. It wasn't the right move because he has a fine view up her short robes and quickly closes his eyes.
Vela plops down next to him and leans over his face. "Unless you prefer smelling me like battle."
Alistair flutters his eyelids open to the sound of her voice so close and stares up into her clear blue eyes, a spray of red curls haloing her head. "I can never smell you over Barkspawn anyway."
"Hey, Scrimpy smells lovely. He has an earthy tone," Vela objects, not-so-subtly correcting her mabari's name in their long-standing argument.
"Mmm, come here," Alistair insists, cupping her sharp shoulder blade and pulling her close to his chest. He kisses the freckles on her shoulder and nuzzles into her neck to breathe deep through his nose. It's the smoke and salt of her skin that makes his mouth water thinking about heated nights together. "You smell like sweat and cedar. I wish everyone smelled as good as you do weeks into a journey."
Vela laughs and kisses the shell of his ear before whispering, "you smell like iron and clover, fresh and green and bloody. It makes me want to bite." She nips at his earlobe playfully.
Alistair hisses in a breath. He licks the salt from her neck and kisses under her jaw. "If we swim you'll wash away all this good you smell and smell like pond water."
Vela leans back to look at him and her vallaslin crinkles around her eyes as she smiles. "But you'll get to swim naked with me."
Alistiar can't help the blush that creeps up his ears. "Oh, then maybe I like the smell of pond water."

WIP Wednesday
It’s been a bit since I’ve had things to share! I’ve been neck deep in exchanges lately and it’s nice to be doing my own stuff again. So here’s some Cassandra/Solas beginnings, I suppose, cuz I have brain rot. Posting it now cuz it’s Wednesday somewhere lol (and I will forget otherwise).
Solas has requested permission to study the lone survivor and one of the smaller rifts, in hopes of finding a way to seal the Breach. He has correctly guessed that it is growing, and believes it will destroy the entire world unless we find a way to stop it. Unless you object, I will allow him his studies—under proper observation, of course.

If Leliana trusted him enough to let him alone with the survivor, then he mustn’t be so terrible.
These thoughts and more tumbled about in Cassandra’s mind before she met the elven apostate. She had thought him an oddity, one who might come and go once Leliana’s curiosity had been satisfied, but the elf had stayed… and stayed… and stayed. She could no longer ignore him, all these days later, with the survivor still unconscious in the Chantry jail. Not when he might know something he wasn’t letting on.
Varric tested her, as he had all the time she’d known him — Why, Seeker, which book will you throw at him? — but she disregarded his words as best as she could. She was a Seeker, and she would not ignore her duty.
But Solas was so unlike anything she expected.
“If you must,” he said in reply to her demand to question him. He hurried between tasks, sleeves rolled to his elbows, poring over notes and books with a pen in hand.
She blinked, impatience rising in her throat. Her hand tightened on the pommel of her sword. “You should take this more seriously, mage. It has been three days, with nothing to show for it.”
He looked up at her, his light eyes wide and angry. He gestured at the elaborate graphs and notes spread out on the table between them. “Nothing, Seeker? We are closer than we were.”
“I am no closer to understanding than I was at the beginning of all this,” Cassandra snapped. “Do not include me in your ‘we’ unless you plan to explain yourself.”
He scoffed, once again absorbed in his work. The light of his candle washed his already pale skin into a wan, greyish hue — if not for the spray of freckles across his face and arms, he would have looked for all the world like someone who had spent his days away from the sun. Had he not denied being in a Circle, she would have thought him one of the many elven mages taken by templars from alienages all over Thedas.
“I shall explain myself,” he finally muttered, “when I find it relevant to do so.”
Cassandra bristled. She approached the table, her armoured boots loud on the stone floor, and let her shadow fall over the apostate’s work. Her hand tightened again with an audible creak of her leather glove on her sword.
“You would do well to remember,” she said quietly, dangerously, “that you are here on Leliana’s goodwill alone. Were you to present yourself to me, I would have had you executed as an accomplice.”
His eyes flashed up to meet hers, dark beneath furrowed brows.
“I still might,” she hissed, “unless you produce results.”

This is my contribution to WIP Wednesday. This is for a BTVS fanfiction, in which Ethan sticks around a big longer after the events of The Dark Age.
"Like the little brunette with the doe eyes?" Ethan steered clear of words like girlfriend, resolutely telling himself he didn't really want to know.
Ripper pulled his glasses from his face, and dropped them onto the coffee table in front of the couch, before taking a seat. With his elbows resting on his knees, he nodded more at his scotch than at Ethan. They were silent for some time. Ethan shuffled uncertainly. He daren't sit next to Ripper on the sofa, but didn't particularly want to lean against the wall all night. Eventually Ripper said, "I don't suppose Jenny will even want to look at me again."
Jenny. Ethan hated that knowing the woman's name lent her some familiarity. Hated that Ripper spoke as though the name Jenny ought to matter in the slightest to Ethan. Hated that he couldn't even be pleased at the idea of Jenny never looking twice at Ripper again. "Oh, and I suppose that's my fault, is it?"

WIP woops I'm a day late sorry
Sooo I had this idea - I forget where from, I think I watched something and it made me picture this very cinematically - I pictured the entire route a message from Gavario's workshop would have to take all the way to Ostwick. A visual, dynamic scene to represent the time the gang takes to go back to Ostwick. After writing it down though, I'm not sure whether what I imagined translates very well on paper. Cinema works quite differently after all :)))

The bookkeeper folds the letter neatly and with practiced ease, edges perfectly aligned, wax seal perfectly centred. Despite his shaking hands, he wasn't going to let this message reach Ostwick anything other than perfectly pristine.
The letter is passed on to the bird keeper, who stuffs it into a tube with little regard for its neatness. He adds a note from Master Gavario, as instructed, and sends their best raven on its way.
Since Nevarra City is the only line of communication the jeweller keeps from his workshop, the message will first make a detour towards the capital, headed for his mansion at the heart of the city. Right where one of Gavario's assistants is eagerly waiting.
The assistant will melt the wax seal very, very gently until it releases the page with no blemishes. He, too, does this with practiced ease. After checking the contents for anything defamatory, he will deem it fit for travel, reattach the seal, and employ another raven to take it further to their contacts in Cumberland. He will notice the seal and think, how droll, a raven on a raven.
The message will land in the public rookery near Cumberland's post office, where workers are on the lookout for everything that comes and goes. For a few terrifying seconds, it will sit among notes and orders and letters of the most common sort, among orders for goods and overblown news of the Qunari invasion, just inconspicuous enough that anyone might pick it up. But no one will.
Those who have worked there for long enough will learn to recognise certain things - a band, a discoloured feather, a small line of gold painted on a raven's beak. Even though the message bears an unfamiliar seal, the bird is none other than one of Master Zethias Gavario's estate. The clerk knows exactly who to pass this on to.
The contact knows all post from Gavario is to be checked, but her heavy purse has prevented that from happening for many years now. There's a note meant for her bearing Gavario's seal - the real one, she made sure - informing her that all orders and payments for raw ore will be made to an address in the Free Marches. The same address on the letter that isn't meant for her. Curiosity gnaws at her, but caution always wins. She's worried that it might not, one of these days.
She drafts the first order, encloses some shipment instructions and the welcoming message she sends to all new suppliers. She writes a bill of exchange in advance - remember to make templates - and seals the order with Gavario's seal. She then switches the tube with an embossed leather container and crams the papers inside.
The messenger wakes before the crack of dawn. He lives close to the docks, so thankfully it isn't much effort to get the mail there on time for the first departures. He greets the sunny morning with a deep breath and gets on with it. After dropping the mail bags onto their respective ship, he gets himself some coffee as reward. The day has just started.
The bosun looks into the bag as he does every time. He isn't interested in the whos and whats, the whens and wheres, not that he knows how to read anyway. No, what he is interested in is the silver seal used by one of the richer houses. The silk ribbon weaved carefully around the letter, to mark a lover's favour. The clumsy child's drawing in the corner of an envelope. Today, he gets to run his calloused fingers over the ridges of the finest leather and gold, not knowing who it comes from or what purpose it serves, and not caring in the least. Not many get to hold something so precious in their hands. And he wouldn't get to do that for long.
He gives the bag to his captain, who throws it in the locked mail box built into his cabin desk. He also doesn't know, doesn't care to know, and often gets paid handsomely for the trouble.
Four days on the sea from Cumberland to Ostwick normally. Five this time, to maintain a generous distance from Kirkwall.
The ship docks in Ostwick's port, much more a settlement now than a centre for trade. Dozens of curious eyes and pairs of hands eager to work line themselves up on the deck of any ship come ashore, offering their skills for a meagre sum of money. The captain always dismisses them, saying this was a cargo ship, not a cruise.
A youth in guard's uniform approaches and demands an inspection. No one gets on or off the ship until he's done.
The messenger fights through the crowd of disgruntled sailors half an hour later to get the bag of mail. Whispers drift over to her as she eyes a safe corner near the walls. They caught the clan. Not all, just those at the Theatre. Too little, too late. Six more disappearances since.
She straps the bag to her back and checks her dagger before climbing in the saddle. She rides, but not before checking around once more, wary of anyone watching. She almost tramples someone over while trying to ignore the eyes she knows are on her. Just another day on the job.
Eyes are indeed watching, and after the messenger passes through Ostwick's massive gates, the watcher fades into the crowd. An empty storage room, a trap door, a tunnel and several locked gates later, she comes up near the Central Market. She travels quicker than the serpentine of narrow streets the messenger has to brave through.
She always ignores the looks she gets at the post. She lets herself in and heads right to the head office, finding the postmaster staring at Gavario's seal with clear intent. Just in time. She snatches the tube from his hands, and pays the toll that was agreed upon even if she feels reluctant to do so now. She'll have to raise this issue with Lady Nadia.
After confirming there are no other messages from Nevarra for the Trevelyan household, Reyna rushes back to the Collar, enters Lady Nadia's locked office, and places the letter on her desk. She quells down her anxiety as she waits, resisting the urge to be the first to find out how Master Jonathan and Lady Demuth were faring. She'd find out soon enough.
