Yo there’s this movie called ‘I’ll Take your Dead’ and at first I thought it was a horror movie and there were parts that made me think ‘this is oddly wholesome for a horror movie’ but it’s not bruh I was tearing up by the end ugh. Anyway Jackie came through in that movie she was a bad bitch and despite who she was in the beginning of the movie she pulled through and did the right thing I am proud of her we stan. And Gloria she played Polly I think I’m Odd Squad. Now I know what she did after she left Odd Squad lol she had some iconic lines in that movie and I’m proud of her and her character development was legendary. Anyone the movie was pretty 10/10 and even like the ghosts were pretty iconic. Anywee

Anyone else imagine men written by Ava Reid kneeling in front of the heroin just melting from reverence while " Marry on a Cross - Ghost " is playing in the background ??
Because Gáspár, Sevas and Preston all give that vibe

a study in drowning was so atmospherically beautiful and eery, comforting like the month of november, the day of thursday, the beige and orange shades of autumn. i felt submerged in the narrative and it made me want to go out to the world, to live amongst the cliffside, to bury myself in the library and delve for hours and days and months into all the scholarly works of this world, to fight against misogyny, to read all the philosophies and
yeah

What's a book you want to try to squeeze in before the end of the year?
Tumblr media
I'm going to try my darndest to read A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid over break. I'm finishing up an eARC of Don't Want You Like A Best Friend, and then I hope to dive into this.
I haven't pre-ordered many books this year, but I *needed* the art to go along with this book. It's the only edition of it I have (the special editions are so pretty!!!), but if I absolutely fall in love with it, I may try my hand at the second-hand market. Though I know editions of this were highly sought after.

I could NOT explain to you on how much this fanfic means to me.
I didn’t write it just to be clear.
but this feels like a bitter sweet closure, on how Bunk’d should have ended, although it would have been highly impossible.
10/10 would recommend to read, there’s no Bertram though.

Another thing I have elected to ignore is Preston making the Sole Survivor the General of the Minutemen.
Harper is not the General of the Minutemen. Nope. Not someone he just met, with very little combat and leadership experience. Maybe he tried to talk her into it, in a fit of “I can’t do this anymore please God take this away from me,” but Harper, being the persuasive person she is, convinced that he was indeed suited for the job, and goes with him on Minutemen missions as backup.

Film Premise Challenge: One Director, Two Actors, One Genre - Entry Fourteen.
This will be a semi-regular series, where someone has to nominate a Director, minimum of two Actors, and a Genre, preferably ones who have not worked together before. I will then come up with a premise / story based on those parameters. Some of these may be more detailed than others, but overall, it’s mainly a bit of fun. If anybody would like to submit an idea, then please do!
Entry Fourteen, the director nominated is…Ava DuVernay. The nominated actors, of which there were two, are…Amy Adams, and Daniel Kaluuya. The chosen genre is…Drama.
I will admit to not having watched much of DuVernay, so I had to research her previous work and use that as a basis for this idea. Hopefully it feels authentic to her style?
In 1966, Amy Adams travels with her father to the U.K during the '66 World Cup. Adams is an aspiring journalist who uses the experience to write more prospective articles for when she returns to America. Adams & her father are staying in London during this time period. During their time in the U.K., Adams & her father are surprised at the differences in racial relations, which leads to her meeting a black police officer, played by Daniel Kaluuya.
The two spend the first half of the film falling for one another, going on dates and as they enter 1967, they have fallen in love, but Adams has to return to the U.S., with Kaluuya wanting to stay with her. Despite Adams' reluctance, he goes to the U.S. for the first time.
The second half of the film contrasts the first as it depicts racial tension with Kaluuya shocked by the difference in treatment in the U.S. compared to milder racism of the U.K, refused as a policeman & forced into menial jobs, whilst Adams is ostracised by friends & colleagues, impacting her journalism prospects.
This impacts their relationship until Adams discovers Loving v. Virginia, a court case where an interracial couple are battling for decriminalisation of interracial marriage. With Kaluuya at her side, they travel to Virginia, meeting the couple & supporting them in court, using both their experiences policing & journalism to both offer protection & coverage. The court case would start engulfing their relationship, almost becoming invested to the point that the decision of the courts might decide their future together.
Dramatic, racially drawn, based on character & history.

Review: A Study In Drowning (Ava Reid)
Rating: ★★★★★/5
"The danger was real. Effy and Angharad had both proven that, with their wits and their mirrors. The danger lived with her; perhaps it had been born with her, if the rest of the stories about changeling children were to be believed. The danger was as ancient as the world. But if fairies and monsters were real, so were the women who defeated them."
I am OB. SESSED. This was so excellent and so much more than I expected.
Effy Sayre has been haunted by visions for her whole life. She sees the Fairy King everywhere; she can't sleep unless she takes a pill, and she just knows that he is out there, waiting for her. She's an architecture student, but only because women aren't allowed to study literature in Caer-Isel. All she truly wants is to study Emrys Myrddin and his famous work, her favourite book, Angharad. When an opportunity arises for Effy to redesign Emrys's home after his death, to go to the place where he lived and wrote, she jumps at the chance. But all is not what it seems at decrepit Hiraeth Manor...
I went into this book expecting some kind of dark academia-esque story. The cover and the blurb certainly give it that air, and I do enjoy that genre, but it's not typically my end-all, be-all. This has some elements of it, for sure, but overall, it's instead this mash-up of DA and fantasy and horror and magical realism and romance, and I just loved how everything fit together in such a unique, interesting way.
I absolutely loved Effy, so, so much. She's been THROUGH IT and she has survived, but she feels it's not enough, and my heart just immediately went to her and stayed with her through her story. Her story is at once original and the story of so many women. She has survived, but she feels it's not enough, that she needs to do more, that she needs to be more, and the feminist message of the book just hit me so hard because it's done so seamlessly and so emotionally.
Equally, Preston stole my affections from the moment we meet him, gruff, snobby guy that he appears to be; he just feels so genuinely sweet, and just so right for Effy, without it ever feeling like Ava was trying too hard.
This quote sums things up for me (and made me clutch the book to my chest and my heart ache):
"Effy laughed again. 'I thought you weren't a romantic.'
'I wasn't,' Preston said, cheeks still pink. 'Until you.'"
💀😭❤️
And the world-building! The lore! I was so taken into this story for the world alone. It's modern-ish, with televisions and phones and cars, but high-fantasy-ish at the same time with some divisive politics at play and a history that I wish we got to explore more. I love how literature is most important here, and though feminism still feels a long ways off, I'd love to find out how Effy contributes to its inevitable rise.
I just. I loved this so much. I can't say enough about it.

Book Blurb: Bestselling author Ava Reid makes her YA debut in this dark academic fantasy perfect for fans of Melissa Albert and Elana K. Arnold.
Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny.
But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming. Including Preston Héloury, a stodgy young literature scholar determined to expose Myrddin as a fraud. As the two rivals piece together clues about Myrddin’s legacy, dark forces, both mortal and magical, conspire against them—and the truth may bring them both to ruin.
Part historical fantasy, part rivals-to-lovers romance, part Gothic mystery, and all haunting, dreamlike atmosphere, Ava Reid's powerful YA debut will lure in readers who loved The Atlas Six, House of Salt and Sorrows, or Girl, Serpent, Thorn.
Review:
A gothic dark academia mystery featuring two rivals-to-lovers who find themselves hunting down the truth about the author of a famous story... only to find themselves fighting against the Fairy King and other dangers as the truth will come at a price. Effy Sayre lives in a world where women aren't afforded the same opportunities as men, and as the only woman in the architecture college (when she wants to be a literature student but it is forbidden for women to be in the literature college), life is hard enough, especially since she is still reeling from the scandal with her advisor... the one in which people think she slept with him to get ahead when the truth is that she didn't want any of it. Effy's only solace from her haunted visions, her terrible childhood, and the assault she faced is her book Angharad, a book that tells the epic story about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King and destroys him. Effy idolizes the author, Emrys Myrddin and the author himself is shrouded in mystery. Yet when the Myrddin family is offering to let a architecture student redesign the house, Effy knows its her chance to find out more about her author. What she didnt expect was that she would be going with Preston Héloury, a literature scholar who wants to expose Myrddin as a fraud and not the true author of Angharad. Things to also note about this universe is that Effy's home land is at war with its neighbor and one of Preston's parents is from the neighboring war land and he is also faced with prejudices. Effy immediately dislikes Preston because he rented all the books on Myrddin when she wanted them, she is also jealous that he is able to be a literature student. Though they both get off on the wrong foot they both find that they are hunting down the truth of the Fairy King, yet Effy is plagued by visions of the Fairy King and she doesn't know what's real and what's in her head. Yet the more they try to find answers the more danger closes in on them. Will they be able to find the truth before it's too late or will they die trying?
This is Ava Reid's third book and her first young adult novel, it features her gorgeous writing and its definitely an atmospheric read. The story deals with a lot of triggers: sexism/misogyny, a sexually-exploitative power imbalance, grooming, rape and dubcon, ableism, mental illness, an emotionally abusive parent, alcoholism, PTSD and intrusive memories, mentions of drowning, and child abandonment. Effy isn't really a likable character and comes off very very young and the writing feels a bit juvenile at times when it comes to her. I did like the overall mystery but I wish there was some character work on Effy and Preston, I wanted them to be a bit more fleshed out and kind of wished there was a better flow to their romance. I liked the book overall but it's definitely not my favorite of all her books. This is her first young adult novel and it definitely feels young as the characters read a bit more juvenile despite being in college. Overall, it's a beautiful atmospheric gothic read with a dash of mystery, romance, and fantasy!
*Thanks Netgalley and HarperCollins Children's Books, HarperTeen for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*

4) Milf and Cookies.
Tumblr media
3) Nightmare Before XXX-Mas.
Tumblr media
2) Office 4-play: Christmas Edition!
Tumblr media
