dim darkness intertwines in innermost hush, clusters of candles adorning the far corners of his study, flickering light and dripping wax entangled in their intimate affair, as the wicks near their culmination, allowing the night to seep from outside, swishing between the confines of the walls. he hears amelia’s entrance first, before he ever sees her / feels her glacial presence settling gently against the ill-lit dark, her figure lingering quietly across the room as he details and confides plans, out loud, more so to himself than to her. leaned against the table, hand grips the smooth edges, as the other drums against the layout of a map, tracing the coiling black cavity of the sketched fold, wooden soldiers moved to carry out invisible strategies across the paper . . .
