I was going to save this illustration for when I finished the larger personal project it is part of. But I like it too much to wait for whenever that'll be, lol.
Anywho. Here's Athlen and Tal from "In Deeper Waters" by F. T. Lukens. Easily one of my favorite books. It just has so many things I love! Hurt/comfort. Siblings. Struggles with legacy and obligation. Magic.
This is the first actual painting I've done in awhile after working mostly in black and white and flat color styles for the last yearish, so about the first hour of painting was just me going, "wait, what the fuck is happening?? What are brushes? What is blending? Someone help me." Also, the colors changed so many times. So many. But I got back in the swing of it eventually! And I am DELIGHTED with how it came out, but I'm especially happy with the water. I think that's some of the best water I've ever painted.
So yeah! New fanart painting that's part of a larger project I'll hopefully get around to finishing eventually.

Title: In Deeper Waters
Author: F. T. Lukens
Page length: 320
Synopsis: A young prince must rely on a mysterious stranger to save him when he is kidnapped during his coming-of-age tour in this swoony adventure that is The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue meets Pirates of the Caribbean. Prince Tal has long awaited his coming-of-age tour. After spending most of his life cloistered behind palace walls as he learns to keep his forbidden magic secret, he can finally see his family’s kingdom for the first time. His first taste of adventure comes just two days into the journey, when their crew discovers a mysterious prisoner on a burning derelict vessel. Tasked with watching over the prisoner, Tal is surprised to feel an intense connection with the roguish Athlen. So when Athlen leaps overboard and disappears, Tal feels responsible and heartbroken, knowing Athlen could not have survived in the open ocean. That is, until Tal runs into Athlen days later on dry land, very much alive, and as charming—and secretive—as ever. But before they can pursue anything further, Tal is kidnapped by pirates and held ransom in a plot to reveal his rumored powers and instigate a war. Tal must escape if he hopes to save his family and the kingdom. And Athlen might just be his only hope…

Just read (well, listened to) In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens and with how criminally underrated and sparsely talked about as I’ve found it to be I feel it important to point out an extremely sweet moment I haven’t seen talked about. (Also just general thoughts.)
BIG spoilers under the cut!!
I adore the detail that Corrie IMMEDIATELY upon seeing Athlen emerge safe and alive put her little self between him and the MASSIVE crowd that had formed and glared at everyone who got too close like… as if she didn’t already approve enough and immediately accept Athlen as yet another big brother him saving her SOLIDIFIED it. She’s like “I will actually kill any of you if you take one step closer to my big fish brother” and she is so right for that. Hell yeah babygirl give them that death glare, let him have the breather he no doubt needed after LITERALLY BEING ON THE VERGE OF DEATH.
Also just??? Can we talk about the panic that had to have overtaken Athlen upon waking up?? Like he KNEW why he was still alive and he KNEW there’d be a cost, so imagine if he didn’t see Tal emerge right away. I swear if he didn’t see him immediately upon waking up that poor boy had to have been panicking SO HARD. Just ABSOLUTELY assuming the worst until he sees him get pulled out by his siblings. And even then he was terrified of what it had cost Tal to save him.
Athlen as a character is just so fundamentally good like all he has ever done is try to make friends and help people he could do no wrong ever in his life. Just a sweet, cheeky little fish dude who doesn’t like wearing shoes. I would say I would die for him but he would HATE that LMAO
Also also, adore the fact that even after, or rather ESPECIALLY after Tal breaks down and sets his captors’ ship ablaze, it’s emphasized so heavily that he is fundamentally a good person as well and that he at his core is driven by kindness. As much as I very much enjoy pacifist narratives I adore the fact that this book didn’t treat any of the characters as bad or wrong or evil for killing those who harmed them and would’ve continued to do so.
10/10 will hyperfixate on for a GOOD long while

Tal: You did drink a bit.
Athlen: Hardly affected me.
Tal: You were butchering the lyrics to several songs.

Aaaaa thanks @void-and-virtue for tagging me!! Also I am so sorry I have just vanished off the face of the earth, but consider this a general update and “I’m alive” too. Also it gives me a chance to babble about so very many things!!! And I will do so at length!!!
Currently reading: an incomplete list of what I am reading and cycling my way through at the moment.
Tumblr media
1.      Rereading The Queen’s Thief series for some levity and joy in my life; I’m currently midway through Thick as Thieves again and am loving it as ever, 10/10 would recommend to anyone who hasn’t read it. Also my partner studies classics and so I get to go and harass them with this book series and ask about how it reflects elements of actual Hellenistic life (I know MWT wasn’t going by any means for a one-to-one but I really really enjoy getting to learn what a lot of the probable inspirations were, and also how the metaphysics of the Geniad reflect neoplatonic philosophy).
2.      The Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. It’s absolutely brutal and I’ve been going through it slowly because it…is rough. It’s really good, but also wow it’s heavy. Feels very relevant to mention that like…my roommates and I have been having long discussions about the climate crisis, wildfires, and just the approaching Crumbles, and it’s lovely as ever to see a book that actually approaches the community-focused approach to the Crumbles. Not just doomsday libertarian preppers.
3.      In Deeper Waters, actually on your recommendation Kylie! I started reading the book like a year ago and then dropped it, but found the audiobook again, and the audiobook is also narrated by uhhh. Kevin R. Free if I’m remembering right? Who also does the audiobooks for The Murderbot Diaries, which I love with all of my heart. Loving the book, have to be honest that I don’t necessarily love the voice that he does for Athlen, but I love him too much to not listen to this. (Also I just looked it up and apparently he’s the voice actor for Kevin in WTNV?????? Makes sense but AAAAAAA [kronk voice] oh yeah it’s all coming together.)
4.      Tractatus Logico-Philosophiscus by Wittgenstein. Trying it again, finally. But I found the centenary edition by one publisher that lays it out in a tree format of sorts instead of just linearly? Which is apparently how Wittgenstein originally wrote it. This is to say—the edition I’d been reading previously addresses points in an order of like, 2.14; 2.141; 2.15; 2.151; 2.1511; 2.1512; 2.15121; 2.1513 etc. etc. etc. but the tree format addresses all points before addressing subpoints, so it’s 1; 2; 3; 4; […] 2.1; 2.2; 2.11; 2.12; 2.13; 2.14; 2.15; […] which is very very neat and way easier to understand in my humble opinion. (See attached diagram. As you can tell I gave up before even finishing the tree for proposition 2.02123.)
ANYWAYS that’s a lot of words and half an hour of trying to draw this out to say—it’s a piece of logical philosophy which is extremely foundational for 20th c. philosophy in pretty much every way, and it’s also extremely funny to me. A lot of people find it extremely dry but I think that it’s hilarious. And not in a way of like, I’m laughing at Wittgenstein, or that in a lot of ways I don’t think he was writing intending it to be humorous, but I don’t think he’s totally unaware of it. It just feels so cheeky at times. Because the whole thing is written in these expanding propositions which build off of one another, and so the propositions themselves are often very simple and straightforwards. Ex:
2.012    In logic nothing is accidental: if a thing can occur in a state of affairs, the possibility of the state of affairs must be written into the thing itself.
2.0121 It would seem to be a sort of accident, if it turned out that a situation would fit a thing that could already exist entirely on its own.
And that’s just hilarious to me! That part of proposition 2.0121 I’ve just annotated with “cheeky” because I find it very funny. I’ve tried reading this twice now (each time on a plane) and I finally sat down to review my notes from the first two sections, so now I can finally get into the meat of it for propositions 3-6.
What I love about the Tractatus is that a lot of people will cite the part of “What can be said at all can be said clearly and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence” but treat that like it’s the only and final conclusion of the Tractatus, because it’s really more like “Look! I did it! I solved all of philosophy, and it’s done nothing!”
Wittgenstein is absolutely on the list of Top 10 Saddest Men Of All Time and he’s a bastard and a motherfucker and I love him. He’s hilarious.
5.      Mengele: Unmasking the “Angel of Death” by David G. Marwell. This one is also very heavy and extremely depressing.
6.      Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco. I’m kinda on the fence about this one, I don’t want to DNF it but it’s a bit too heavy on the horny romance for me and not enough on the geopolitical vampire plot (personal preference). But I had been enjoying it for a bit, wouldn’t not recommend I guess
7.      Gay Bar: Why We Went Out by Jeremy Atherton, which is about the history and disappearance of gay bars and physical spaces for queer community. This one hits hard personally, right now my city only has one designated “gay club” though there are a lot of other queer places in a less official way. There used to be so many and it breaks my heart, and reading this has been equally heartbreaking and wonderful.
8.      Not a book but it’s making up the majority of my reading right now so I’m putting it on here because I need to babble about it that I’ve been catching up on a lot of school readings to try to turn in some late assignments from the last (checks watch) two years, so there’s been a lot of essays by Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, a bit of Heidegger, and a lot of critiques of Heidegger—I’m currently rereading the part of Being and Time on Being-toward-death and Mitsein, and then following it up with sections of critique by Luce Irigaray from The Forgetting of Air in Martin Heidegger, and then the chapter “With Being-With?” from Being Singular Plural by Jean-Luc Nancy (and then after that, Simon Critchley wrote some notes on that, and I’m really looking forwards to reading that too); and also then “On The Coloniality of Being” by Nelson Maldonado-Torres, and then after that Aporias by Derrida, who I’ve also been reading a lot of for classes.
ANYWAYS.
Favourite Colour: You know when there’s a massive storm with really dark clouds, and it then passes, but the clouds are directly across from the sun, and so they’re being illuminated in front of you from the sun behind you, and then you have fresh green trees against the clouds? It’s the color in between the clouds and the trees, at the edges, because they look so golden. (Vital note: I do not wear my glasses as often as I should.)
Last Song: The Man With X-Ray Eyes by Bauhaus. Absolutely adore this album, it’s so so so goofy and I get this song stuck in my head all the time. Next time there’s a karaoke night I’m doing either this or Of Lilies and Remains because “Peter has fallen to the old cold stone floor wheezing and emitting a seemingly endless flow of ectoplasmic white goo from ears and mouth” is just so goofy and great to throw people off-guard. Please please please go listen to this whole album I love it.
Last Show: Baccano! Incredibly fun, 10/10, need to go and rewatch to get the plot straight in my head because of all of the time jumps. Also, outstanding jazz soundtrack. Love it so much. The best kind of bullshit.
Currently Watching: My partner got me watching The Owl House finally and I love it with all of my heart. Eda owns my soul. Hooty is great. Luz is my absolute beloved. I cried seeing on-screen queerness in this kid’s cartoon. Also Eda reminds me of my favourite professor. Identical energy, both absolutely deranged.
Last Movie: oh god. Uh. Literally the only thing coming to mind is Godspeed You! Black Emperor, which is a 1976 Japanese documentary about motorcycle clubs/gangs/movements in Japan in the ‘70s. A very uncomfortable watch, because it’s just…it’s very interesting, but watching bōsōzoku with fascist symbols plastered on their bikes, helmets, clothing, and skin, and their interactions with the cops and legal system, and the one kid’s interactions with his parents? It’s brutal. I know I’ve definitely watched other films since then but for some reason this is literally the only thing coming to mind.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory: Sour and/or salty. It can be sweet or spicy or savory but the important thing is that it’s either sour or salty.
Currently working on: One (1) extremely self-indulgent angst fic that I started ages ago, long-term WIP for when I’m feeling sad. A pile of papers for classes but one for fun on the digital location of (sub)culture and dark academia (in which the only real physical location for “dark academia” to exist is the academy, which is a fundamentally hostile environment that just sublates what “dark academia” considers itself to be); an essay on Benjamin’s Language as Such and the Language of Man and Arendt’s discussion of the inarticulate cry, both in relation to klezmer ornamentation as pure expression of language and/or grief; a piece that I might submit to a music zine about how Bowie’s song TVC-15 uses the stylings of surf rock in ways that create ambivalence about whether he’s singing about a bad trip and a TV (which he is), or a car that he loves deeply (maybe). Also the long-standing thing I’ve been writing about locutions of love, still an ongoing project. A history of my university, maybe? The line between projects for fun and projects for work have gotten a bit blurred.
Current obsession: beating the old Mortal Kombat arcade terminal at the punk bar down the way. It used to cost a quarter per game but now it’s a dollar so I’m very determined to get way way way better at it because otherwise it’s too expensive to play.
Tagging mutuals: Kylie I think you got most people I know but uhhhh. @uppercase-disgrace @edgy-contrarian dragging y’all into this??? anyone else who wants to!

Some scattered Blackwood Farm thoughts, before Blood Canticle obliterates everything else from my mind -
I don't know what the hell was with the cameos, but I appreciated that Rice embraced the weirdness of it all the way through
So, the reveal of Petronia being intersex. Clearly part of the long lineage of the fetishization of intersex and otherwise gnc bodies in gothic erotica dating back to Sade's Juliette and also memorably present in Rice's own Beauty's Kingdom. Having read Rice's erotica her sex scenes in VC don't phase me so much, and Petronia and Arion's whole setup was in many ways very much out of the Beauty books. The way the reveal is staged also reminded me of the reveal of Athlene being trans in Tanith Lee's Personal Darkness, which was published just a few years before Blackwood Farm. I wouldn't be surprised if Rice was reacting to that, though I think what Lee does there is significantly more thoughtful.
Speaking of fetishization, there is something coming into focus for me about Rice's use of vampires as repositories for the fetishization of the (both implicitly and explicitly) western past. The moment when Quinn drinks Arion's blood and experiences this contact with Greek antiquity - not so much with Arion's memories as an individual but the sense of the time, the statues that he is surprised to see painted - illustrates this strongly. This is present of course in many vampire narratives (think of the conflict between the medieval and the modern in Dracula), but it means something different for Rice with her "children of the millennia."
Regardless, I find Arion and Petronia themselves pretty interesting, though Rice does little with them. Their whole plan to ensnare Quinn is bizarre and therefore leaves me with a lot of curiosity.
Yeah, I'm invested in the Mayfair women. I don't know when and how this happened, but it did.
I really need to think harder about the role of CSA and the sexualization of youth throughout these books (and all of Rice's work, to be honest). It's uncomfortable to look at directly but I think it's actually pretty complicated and central and I want to understand it.

in deeper waters rant post
i started reading this book two days ago and let me tell you- i am obsessed. the characters, their relationships, the plot twists, the adventure, the magic, the character development, the ✨queerness✨ are just 👨‍🍳💋
you know that thing where a part makes you feel all the jiggy emotions you have to close the book to breathe? because that happened to me so many times while i was reading it. tal and athlen are easily some of the softest and most adorable characters ever like- the FLUFF! yet at the same time, the suspenseful and adventurous moments balances it out and kept me engaged the entire time. i could literally go to the thesaurus and find all the big fancy words in the world and they can’t describe how much i love this book.
needless to say, i’m completely obsessed :>

Been reading a lot lately so there are some books I’m interested in bringing to life through writing. (Can do aus of them as well) 21+ and on discord. All characters would be aged up to over 18 just because I’m more comfortable with that.
1) All That’s Left In The World - would love to explore them just figuring shit out after the apocalypse. Can write either Andrew or Jamie
2) the raven cycle/dreams trilogy - mostly interested in Pynch but not opposed to Gansey with Adam or Ronan (or anything with Noah) open to who I play here as well but my experience has been with Ronans open to aus or canon
3) All For The Game - Andriel. I can only write for Neil. Or I can write for Jean against Kevin or Jeremy. Open to AUs or canon.
4) So This Is Ever After - this one could even be ocs with a plot like this but this story wrecked me I loved it so much. Again can play either role more interested in plot here than the characters specifically but I loved Matt and Arek too.
5) If This Gets Out - also more plot focused that characters so can do Ocs. But love the idea of band boys trying to figure out love on the road while keeping it under wraps and yeah. Can play either if we’re doing Ruben send Zach.
6) In Deeper Waters - I love Tal and Athlen but also wouldn’t mind OCs here. Just a mermaid plot in general I think. Finding a prince (with magic hah) I think I’d prefer the Mermaid role here (or Athlen) but I’m open.
7) Legendborn - I’m open to Bree and Nick but also interested in Nick and Sel. Or OCs with a similar plot line I just love King Arthur lore a lot.
I’ve read a ton of other books too so if you ever just want to scream about reading I’m down for that as well haha. Like this and I’ll reach out.

Taliesin and Athlen are both soft guys that had to go through hell and back, that endured what most people wouldn't even dream of, and that love each other so much that even defied a greater magic just to be together.
If we don't have any of this, sorry, but we can't be together forever.

Books I Read in June
I’m trying to get back into reading a bit more because I’m pretty sure I only read like 3 books last year, and reading is what helps inspire my writing. I thought it might be fun to share what books I’ve been reading plus a few of my thoughts on them, starting with the books I read in June.
Tumblr media
Kate in Waiting by Becky Albertali
I really enjoyed this book at the beginning, but once I began to realize how the book was going to end, I started to like it a little less. Kate and Andy’s dynamic was really fun and their “communal crushes” was interesting, if not a little weird. I just hated that Andy had to lie to her while she was still crushing on Matt. I do like the way it all turned out in the end; it was just a little painful to get there (and not in a fun way).
Love, Creekwood by Becky Albertali
I’m going to be completely honest here and admit that I didn’t actually finish reading this one. I don’t know if it was because it had been so long since I read the other books or because I didn’t like they style. I usually really like epistolary-type books, so it was probably the former. I just couldn’t get into it because I didn’t feel very close to their story.
In Deeper Waters by F.T. Lukens
In keeping with being honest, I have to say that it took me over half the book to really get into it. It felt like the story was too slow at first and then too rushed. Tal and Athlen’s journey felt really drawn out without actually drawing me in, and once we got to the good part where Tal was back home and everything was happening, it felt like it all happened too fast. I really enjoyed reading Tal’s interactions with his family, and their dynamic was so well written; I wish we had gotten to see more of that. And more of Athlen getting used to everything on land. Altogether, I really liked the book; it just left me wanting more, and I’m not sure if that was a good thing.
One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus
I actually read this book a few years ago, but I decided to reread it before reading the sequel. The ending was a total surprise back then, which is what I really love in a mystery novel. It wasn’t as fun reading it the second time around already know how it was going to end, but it was interesting to go back and notice some of the details that I hadn’t before.
Little White Lies by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
I love mystery novels, and this one was no different even though I was a little hesitant about the premise of this story at first. The book had me guessing the whole time, trying to figure out who Sawyer’s father is, and I even loved seeing her make friends and all the new revelations along the way. I like the way this story played out, so I’m not sure if I’m going to read the sequel.
Husband Material by Alexis Hall
I absolutely adored this book, and you can read my more in-depth review in this post if you want.
The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
I tried reading this book a few years ago, but I barely made it 100 pages in before it triggered me so bad that I couldn’t open the book again. Now that I’m in a much better place, though, I was able to pick up the book again and read it in its entirety. The slowburn of this story nearly killed me. I’ll admit that I didn’t really care for the adventure aspect of this book (which means I probably won’t finish out this series) but I was really interested in how Monty and Percy’s relationship would play out. It hurt me deeply every time that they would come together just to be ripped apart again, and the only thing that kept me reading was the hope for a relatively happy ending where they would somehow work past their differences and end up together. So, I was very pleased with how this book ended.
As a little bonus, here are some the books that I’m going to try to read in July:

Finished, ‘In Deeper Waters’ by F.T. Lukens. First book in the longest time I’ve started reading and really wanted to keep going.
So there’s this prince, he has magic which is bad since his great grandfather power tripped and tried to take over the continent back in the day and his family is still trying to fix relationships with other kingdoms. So he’s out on a coming-of-age tour when they find a sinking ship. They rescue the prisoner who just jumps overboard as soon as he can. Everyone thinks he’s dead. You know, because ocean. But Tal, the prince, finds him, Athlen, in the marketplace a few days later. Athlen is secretive and Tal is enthralled. Not long after Tal is kidnapped by pirates with political motivations. And Tal has to navigate not only trying to escape to save his kingdom and family but his budding feelings for Athlen.
Very nicely written. Kept me on the edge of my seat, even though you can easily see most of the plot coming there are enough twists on what you would expect to happen to keep it interesting.
I would definitely recommend for anyone interested in a short (about 300 pages) novel set in a fantasy world with positive LGBTIA+ relationships

Hii! I hope you're okay!
It's very exciting that you finish uni tomorrow! I understand why you're scared, but it's a big step for you, that's so cool!
I'm soo happy that you're going to write thominho's fics again! I missed it, I'm so excited!
And since it's been a long time you haven't talked about yourself, is there a movie or a book that you saw/read not long ago and that you really liked?
Anyway that's it, have a good day/night!
Thank you!! Yeah, it's a big step and I realized I was never gonna be ready for it, so I just need to jump into it and see, but yeah, it's still exciting^^
Aww thank you! I missed writing them too, but knowing people like my fics always gives me a boost^^
I haven't watched a movie recently, which is strange since I love movies. But I've read a lot. There's Aristotle and Dante Dive into the Waters of the World that made me cry so much, but I loved every second of it. I've also read Out of Character and I really liked it, it's so geek haha, and I'm currently reading In Deeper Waters and I love it so much. Tal and Athlen are my little babies okay!
Have a great day/night too!
