IN CONTRAST
When I read Un’avventura Straordinaria, the story that I loved the most was the story of Sanremo. The decision by the guys to take on the Sanremo Festival. This story brought out their personalities, their differences and how they are so bound to one another that they could make the decision of a lifetime together even if it meant they could lose what was so important to them, their country and…

✨My Top 10 Favourite Non-Musical Chaotic Moments From Sanremo Herstory✨
Sanremo is technically the Festival of Italian Music™ yet people have been watching it for everything but the music since time immemorial. So if you thought that peak chaos had already been reached with the artists' shenanigans, I'm here to demonstrate that they were merely trying to keep up with everyone else around them trying to win the prize of Most Unhinged Personality.
What follows is a collection of things that 100% actually happened on the Sanremo stage that have nothing to do with the competition.
This is Roberto Benigni's world and we're just living in it
1. 1980 - My parents made me aware of this moment and I'm so mad I didn't know about it until now. Basically Benigni was hosting Sanremo that year and he decided to make the most iconic monologue in Sanremo herstory. It's basically a manifesto to free love and a critique of the fact that the catholic church gatekeeps sexual behaviors from its followers even in the constraints of marriage. This 5 minute comedic masterpiece has everything: a name drop of the pope using a derogatory nickname, Benigni and his co-host and partner Olimpia Carlisi fully making out in front of everyone's salad for a solid 30 seconds (an eternity for TV time) and a mic drop. People talked about the kiss for weeks, truly a win for the lobby etero. Roberto Benigni is famous internationally for his walk on the chairs when he was accepting the Oscar for La Vita è Bella, but I personally think this should be his legacy.
Tumblr media
2. 2011 - In the year of the 150th anniversary of the Italian unification, Benigni comes on stage riding an actual horse and carrying the Italian flag (Achille Lauro wishes), then makes a speech about the Italian anthem being written by Mameli when he was still underage (21 was the age of maturity back then), alluding to bunga bunga cause this was 2011 after all.
Tumblr media
3. 2020 - Benigni comes back with a vengeance to teach us about Il Cantico dei Cantici, some ancient biblical text that the modern catholic church has successfully buried because of its explicit mentions of physical love and sex. Other people have already talked about this, but I wanted to include it cause with the knowledge of what he did in 1980, I consider this a full circle moment. He came in minchia first, he was a short king with a tall queen, he exhibited peak Italianness when he talked about the three most important things for italians other than food (the church, sex and b*rlusconi) and he left no survivors. I doubt he will ever be invited to Sanremo again.
Tumblr media
Sanremo 1994 & 1995: the Pippo Baudo Circus
4. 1994 - Sir Elthon John and thee RuPaul sing Don't go Breaking my Heart while the audience looks at them in shock? awe? disgust? appreciation? You decide, they're iconic in any way.
Tumblr media
5. 1995 - Sir Elton John was invited again, but at the eleventh hour, host Pippo Baudo was informed that his highly paid anticipated appearance had been canceled, allegedly because he'd just had a fight with his partner and didn't feel like going on stage anymore, so he just took a private jet back to London. Sir Elthon John the gay legend that you are.
Tumblr media
6. 1995 - This one moment is the reason why I created this list. I wasn't even alive when this happened but I'm pretty sure I was born with the memory of this event already planted in my brain. It should be the only question they ask when applying for citizenship cause if you know about this you are Italian, I don't care. I'm of course talking about the suicide attempt of Pino Pagano from the balcony of the Ariston theater, which Pippo Baudo bravely stopped all on his own. It's ok, we can joke about this cause years later Pino Pagano himself admitted that it was all fake, a stunt orchestrated by him with the complacency of Rai and probably Pippo Baudo himself. All of this for the chance of becoming famous and for the ratings. I mean, they succeed but at what cost?
Tumblr media
7. 2012 - You know how, in English, pussy technically means female cat but everyone uses it to refer to the vagina? Well the word farfallina basically serves the the same function in Italian. It technically means small butterfly, but it's the word a little girl would use to refer to her vagina, in a cute, non-sexual way. Anyway here's showgirl and co-host Belen Rodriguez and her farf[gunshot].
Tumblr media
8. 2015 - Of course I had to leave an entry for the quota democristiana, which was filled when a traditional family composed of genitore 1, genitore 2 and sixteen (16) children was invited to counterbalance the invitation of Conchita Wurst, queer icon of Eurovision winning fame.
Tumblr media
9. Just every time orchestra director Beppe Vessicchio has graced us with his presence. He's the main character of Sanremo, whenever he's introduced the audience claps and cheers for him the loudest, much to the disrespect of the singer who's actually getting ready to sing on stage. Why would the audience do something so controversial yet so brave? Cause they're right, Mr. Beppe Vessicchio deserves all the applauses; singers come and go but he's always been there for us (since 1990) with his comforting smile and amazing hair, and always will.
Tumblr media
10. The Sanremo flowers controversy - Sanremo is not only the city were the competition takes place, but it's also known as the city of flowers, so it's tradition that all the female singers and guests receive a bouquet of Sanremo flowers each night that they come in stage. Yes only the women. It's all very patronizing towards women and sexist towards men. Well, in a rare example of male-female solidarity and communism, in recent years the artists have started to show their disapproval of this practice. Now it's not unusual to see female singers promptly share their flowers with the men on stage (if there are any), it's kinda hilarious cause some of them cannot wait to get rid of the bouquet. Che la sinistra riparta dai fiori per tutt* a Sanremo.

Sanremo 2020
Here a few ways to watch Sanremo online starting on tuesday february 4th 8:30 pm (it’ll probably start with a 5 minutes “anteprima = preview” every night), until saturday february 8th, when the final will be broadcasted.
/ Official website / you can find loads of videos and interviews here + the latest news.
Rai’s website dedicated section (here)
Starting from January 27th, a 6 minutes show about Sanremo has been broadcasted every night, with interviews and random curiosities (here - PrimaFestival section right below the host Amadeus’ photo)
The usual Dopofestival, with the analysis of the show at the end of each night, won’t be broadcasted onTV but only on RaiPlay (here - L’Altro Festival)
CasaSanremo - A website about Sanremo and all the artists who will take part, with more infos and interviews. Follow them also on their Social Media Channels, usually they make live video/interviews/shows on FB for example.
Some video interviews on Sorrisi&Canzoni (where you can find also other infos about Sanremo)
To watch it live:
Raiuno -> just click on the first video on the left, or here , to open the Raiuno streaming immediately (I added the whole Rai channels things in case you had troubles connecting directly and wanted to try from there) I’m not sure you have to log in to watch a live, but it’s through just an email or FB btw
Sanremo in signs language live
I’ll try to write down some more infos/links through the week.
——-
Hosts & Guests + Other Stuff
This years’ host will be Amadeus (who choose the songs taking part into this Sanremo), a TV and radio host. He will be accompanied by 10 female co-hosts, all coming from TV, songs, sport and information fields: Francesca Sofia Novello, Laura Chimenti, Antonella Clerici, Diletta Leotta, Emma D'Aquino, Sabrina Salerno, Alketa Vejsiu, Mara Venier, Georgina Rodriguez, Rula Jebreal. They will appear on few nights (or just one) each. The radio and TV host Fiorello will be present all the 5 nights, same as the famous singer Tiziano Ferro. They will appear on stage randomly to entertain and sing, maybe also with other guests. Some of the one-night guests might be the singers Al Bano & Romina Power (with a new song, probably on day 1), Zucchero, Ghali, Gianna Nannini, Biagio Antonacci, Tony Renis, Massimo Ranieri, Jhonny Dorelli, i Ricchi e Poveri (all the 4 members who originally started the band), Ultimo, Lewis Capaldi, Dua Lipa, Mika (these last 3 probably on Thursday and Friday night); the actors/singers of a couple of Italian movies: Pierfrancesco Favino, Kim Rossi Stuart, Emma Marrone, Claudio Santamaria (Gli anni più belli - Gabriele Muccino) and Diego Abatantuono, Christian De Sica, Angela Finocchiaro, Massimo Ghini, Paolo Rossi, Rocco Papaleo (La mia banda suona il pop - Fausto Brizi); and let’s not forget the Oscar winner Roberto Benigni. For the 70° anniversary of the competition, a 300 meters red carpet has been held in Sanremo to connect the roads nearby to the Ariston theater. The names of the past 69 editions’ winners are written on the red carpet and they may stay there also after the end of the competition (not sure though - take a look at the pics here). An outside stage, called Nutella stage, has been build in the streets of Sanremo. Guests and hosts will randomly go there as well to cheer the crowd.
How it works
Differently from last year, this year the young/newbie section is back. So there will be 24 singers in the Campioni (champs) section and 8 in the Giovani (young/newbies) section. The winner of the competition of the Campioni section will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest: if he/she/them won’t accept, the choice will be another artist, usually the 2nd classified. Another difference with the past edition is that the “Duets night” will take place on the 3rd night. The Campioni’s singers will perform (with another Italian or foreign artist) a song from a past Sanremo edition. This special evening will be called Sanremo 70. Differently from the past, the rank at the end of the 3rd night, will change also the rank after the 2 first nights (votes will be added to the general rank).
Day 1 - co-hosts: Rula Jebreal, Diletta Leotta. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. “Gli anni più belli” actors, Emma Marrone (will sing too), Gessica Notaro and Antonio Maggio, Al Bano & Romina Power. The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. We’ll have a first rank of the 12 Campioni who performed tonight.

Day 2 - co-hosts: Emma D’Aquino, Laura Chimenti, Sabrina Salerno. Prob. guests: Fiorello, Tiziano Ferro. The two winning songs (one for each contest) will pass to the 4th night. We’ll have another rank of the 12 Campioni who performed tonight, and then one with all the 24 contestants (a mix with day 1′s rank).

The first gay bar in post-World War II Berlin opened in the summer of 1945, and the first drag ball took place in American sector of West Berlin in the fall of 1945.[26] Four honourably discharged gay veterans form the Veterans Benevolent Association, the first LGBT veterans' group.[27] Gay bar Yanagi opened in Japan
1946 – Plastic surgeon Harold Gillies carries out sex reassignment surgery on Michael Dillon in Britain.
1951 – Greece decriminalizes homosexuality.

“For the second Sanremo of Baglioni the bets are already on Il Volo”
Translation of the article http://www.thewaymagazine.it/targets/per-il-secondo-sanremo-di-baglioni-si-scommette-gia-su-il-volo/
«The 69th edition of the Sanremo Festival is coming, again this year under the management and artistic direction of Claudio Baglioni, and bookmakers are already making projections on the odds of winning.
Political polemics about the presenter, who a few days ago attacked an “hating” Italy on the issue of migrants, have strengthened the lighter discussions on the toto-winner. And in the absence of strong names coming from abroad [as guests] everyone is focusing on the tenor trio that alone will ensure global visibility at the Italian Festival: IL VOLO.
According to the bettors, the trio that is more embroiled abroad than in Italy, is vying for the final victory. Baglioni, flanked by the couple Virginia Raffaele-Claudio Bisio will have the task of balancing favors and remain impartial, but the bets are on the three, which should arrive in the Riviera with a completely renewed sound.
In the 2019 edition there’s a mix of promising youngsters and veterans of the Italian music, artists of the indie scene and talent shows and, as every year, there is already discussion about who will be the winner.
The planetwin365 analysts trace the forecasts of the kermesse that will turn on the lights of the Ariston Theater from 5 to 9 February 2019.
The favorite is Ultimo, a Roman singer-songwriter who has already triumphed in the last edition as a new proposal. The 22 year old now competes among the Big and seems destined to be one of the protagonists: his victory, with the song “I tuoi particolari” is quoted 1.95. Immediately behind, at 2.85, Il Volo. According to planetwin365, the young trio has all the credentials to repeat the success of 2015.
At 7.00 there are Francesco Renga and Federica Carta, the first a habitué dell'riston (who has already seen the winner in 2005), the second a darling of the youngest after the success of Amici [a talent show]. Coming from the same talent, but with more appeal on the female audience, Irama: the lion rampant to the new winner of the show of Maria de Filippi it’s at 11, as Arisa, which presents this year with the song “Mi sento bene” . Who has never won in Sanremo is Nek, who this year tries again with “Mi farò trovare pronto”. The victory of the Emilian singer-songwriter is at 13.00.
Among the veterans there will be Paola Turci, Patty Pravo (on stage with Briga) and Loredana Bertè. The odds for the three participants are respectively 17.00, 21.00 and 22.00. Much more down, always on the subject of the old guard, Nino D'Angelo, who in a duo with Livio Cori does not win the trust of planetwin365 bookies: their victory is given to 66.00 (as well as that of Achille Lauro and Mahmood , winner last year in the “Youth” category).
The delegation coming from the indie scene and from the local underground also includes: Zen Circus (21.00), Ghemon (33.00), Boomdabash, Motta and Ex-Otago (46.00). Present in the lower middle part of the planetwin365 ranking, but to all intents and purposes a potential lever of musical novelty for the general public. While they will beat it on equal terms, at least according to the odds, the Negrita, Daniele Silvestri and Simone Cristicchi: 33.00 for all three Big.»
That’s it. It must be said that no one has listened the songs, except for the judges. So all above are hypothesis.

The Stress, the Pressure and the Joy!
After six years the guys returned to the Ariston stage. They traveled around the world and stole the hearts of the people of the United States, South America, every corner of the earth. All the fame that any one person could want they had achieved. In six years, they did what most people cannot do in a lifetime! But all of this, which meant so much to them, at times, seemed lost because of what…

Theater! Murder mystery! Queer girls! Yes, yes, and yes.
Echo After Echo by Amy Rose Capetta (October 10, 2017)
Zara Evans has come to the Aurelia Theater, home to the visionary director Leopold Henneman, to play her dream role in Echo and Ariston, the Greek tragedy that taught her everything she knows about love. When the director asks Zara to promise that she will have no outside commitments, no distractions, it’s easy to say yes. But it’s hard not to be distracted when there’s a death at the theater—and then another—especially when Zara doesn’t know if they’re accidents, or murder, or a curse that always comes in threes. It’s hard not to be distracted when assistant lighting director Eli Vasquez, a girl made of tattoos and abrupt laughs and every form of light, looks at Zara. It’s hard not to fall in love. In heart-achingly beautiful prose, Amy Rose Capetta has spun a mystery and a love story into an impossible, inevitable whole—and cast lantern light on two girls, finding each other on a stage set for tragedy.

By @elenati7 - translation to English by @ilvolomiami “ In bocca al lupo, ragazzi! Vi aspettiamo a Mosca! ❤❤❤ Il Volo is an Italian trio singing in the classic crossover style. The stage of the Ariston Theater in Sanremo saw the birth of these young singers in 2009 at the "Ti lascio una canzone" competition. I am so excited to help reveal the cover of Amy Rose Capetta's Echo After Echo, a theater-centric f/f YA love story coming this October from Candlewick Press! (And not just because the cover is gorgeous!) Before you see the beauty, here are a few words from author Amy Rose Capetta!
*****
This book came out of two things: being a lifelong theater kid*, and falling in love. I spent a solid fifteen years of my life going from show to show, green room to backstage to onstage, always living for the next cast list, or waiting for the incandescent moment when my work as a playwright was put on its feet. This story started with a beautiful theater, and a girl who loved it. A voice keep dropping words into my ear when I was supposed to be writing something else. The reason I kept coming back, even though I was afraid this story would never find a readership outside of my own head? I was going through a time of serious uncertainty in my own life, and I needed to write a queer love story to give myself hope. It felt like epic love was never allowed for two girls, unless it was tragic. And while it turns out a theater is a ridiculously convenient setting for a mystery, I think the real reason I returned to it for this novel is that I learned to use my voice in the theater, just like the main character, Zara. It’s where I trained to become someone who infuses stories with honesty and truth. And this truth I had—this glowing certainty that tragic endings could be changed and new stories written—drove me to write Echo After Echo. Zara and Eli’s love story was a life-changing experience for me. Now it’s the most important time: when the lights dim, and the audience gets to see what happens.
*A few highlights of my theater life: being in a Shakespeare troupe for four years, performing a monologue on roller blades in front of Kurt Vonnegut (true story), writing a play set entirely in a supermarket, and being a lowly intern at a workshop of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s first musical!
********************

This is the Aurelia Theater.
Zara’s body curls around the open stage door. Her feet are a rushed whisper. She would die before she would disturb the auditions that are, according to a sign, already IN PROGRESS.
Backstage is black and empty. Not so much a world as the darkness before the world begins. Ten stories of fly space yawn above Zara’s head, ready to swallow scenery — a tangle of woods, the twisted spine of a mountain range.
The greenroom throws light through an open door. Zara stops outside. Breathes. There’s always a moment like this, a quiet one before the nervous, giddy plunge into auditions. Zara wants to make these seconds last — forever, if possible. She has no interest in going back to her assigned life. The one where she is a senior in high school, pulls decent grades, does a scattering of school plays, has a string of minor crushes.
This is already better. This is already more.
She stands in the theater’s dark body and pictures its face, pale marble with a gilded blush. Any actress with half a dream to her name knows the Aurelia Theater. Still, it doesn’t seem possible that Zara is actually here. The casting notice she found in Backstage must have been a mistake.
Open call.
For Echo and Ariston.
They wanted a video audition, so she signed up for an hour of studio time at the arts annex where she takes acting workshop. She could have made the video at home, just cleared her throat and dived into Echo’s lines headfirst. But Zara needed to feel like more than a teenage girl pretending in her bedroom, and that meant a real rehearsal space. She set up her phone on a borrowed tripod and turned strips of recessed lights on and off until she found the magical combination that gave her face a slight glow. She still felt a jab of nerves as she hit RECORD. She sounded ridiculous, saying her name and age for the phone’s little black eye. She had to restart her monologue twenty times before she had a decent version to send. By the time she was done, Zara felt sure she would never hear back.
She auditioned on something stronger than a whim — but what’s the name for that? Zara tests words to find one that fits. It’s a game she plays, inspecting and weighing things in her mind, seeking matches. Being an actor is all about finding keys from the real world that open imaginary locks.
What’s stronger than a whim, but with the same push to it, like a knuckle of wind?
Urge? Desire?
No. Too many bad novels have coated those words, turned them slick.
Inclination?
Weak.
Impulse.
Yes. Something gentle and sure clicks inside her.
Yesterday, Zara got the call from the casting director. Today, she skipped school for the first time in recorded history.
A woman in the obligatory black of a crew member comes out of the wings and catches Zara standing in the doorway. “Auditions?” she asks.
Zara nods, her neck still tight from the train ride.
The woman leads Zara into the greenroom. The space is choked with girls. And every single one wants the same role as Zara, which is a problem, because now that she is here, she can’t imagine leaving.
This is the Aurelia Theater. It feels like coming home.
