“I don’t think I wanna do this.” You grumble as you walk into the living room. You lean down to hand your companion a glass of scotch, offering him a half smile when he gently takes it and places it on a nearby coffee table. “Seriously.”

Instead of responding, he simply pats his lap and waits.

“Okay. How about we don’t need to do this?” You try again, hating how relaxed his big body seems while taking up way too much space on your couch.

Ari shrugs then, catching his plump bottom lip between his perfect teeth and waits. He doesn’t speak. Doesn’t demand. Doesn’t boss. He just waits.

For you.

“It’s stupid.” Your voice comes out softer now, more delicate. “And it’s not like it's gonna change anything.”

Your Bounty Hunter cocks his head to the side, one tawny brow raised as he patiently waits for you to continue cycling through your list of objections.

“I just have bad days sometimes.” Hot tears prick the backs of your eyes. But even though you’re quick to blink them away, you’re not quite fast enough.

Ari studies you for a moment, his piercing blue eyes making your nipples pebble beneath the thin material of your silk robe. It made it hard to remember that you were technically in trouble. Which meant that was was about to happen could technically be construed as a punishment.

“Then why don’t you be my good little Bird and have a seat, hm?” Your man’s deep voice comes out thick and rough. And while you have a feeling that he wants to make you obey, you know he also wants you to come to him on your own.

“Can the robe stay on, maybe?” You ask, your freshly polished toes digging into the short, plush carpet. “What if I get cold? Or–”

“You won’t.” He softly interjects, widening his jean-covered thighs just a little. Because although you didn’t know this, he’d already made a couple quick adjustments to the thermostat just in case. The last thing your man wanted to do was make you uncomfortable – at least not like that.

And then he holds out his hand for your robe. You stand there glaring at him, the two of you engaged in a silent battle of wills. He wins, of course. But only because you have nothing to throw at him.

Except for your goddamned robe, which the smug bastard manages to catch midair.

Ari tosses it to the other side of the couch before returning his attention to you. He’s pleased when you take a tentative step toward him, followed by another. And then another. The next thing you know, you’re slowly easing your nude body onto his lap…

And into his waiting arms.

Immediately he wraps them around you, drawing you closer to his hard, muscled body. It never fails to make you feel soft and feminine – even when your mind was busy screaming at you that you were anything but.

Today you felt dumpy, fat, and unattractive.

But then here was this handsome man, holding onto you as if you were the most precious thing in the world to him. It was enough to make you start crying all over again. Just like you had this earlier morning.

“I’m sorry.” You whisper, swallowing the lump in your throat as you work to speak.

“I gotta be honest with you, baby.” Ari murmurs after a few minutes, his warm lips skimming over your brow. “I didn’t like what I heard come outta that pretty mouth this morning. Especially didn’t like it when you called yourself a pig.”

“Why?” You choke out a wet laugh. “Would you rather I have compared myself to some other barnyard animal?”

You’re rewarded for your snark with a sharp slap to your left flank, which suddenly has you burying your face in the crook of his neck.

Oops. Guess that wasn’t the response he was looking for.

“No.” He grunts as you feel his fingers dig into the tender flesh of your thighs. You had no doubt that you’d be sporting a delicious set of fresh bruises on your skin by tomorrow morning.

“Oh.” Whimpering softly, you wrap your arms around his neck as you try to ignore the way his possessive, proprietary touch makes your body flare to life.

“I wanna know why you felt the need to make the comment at all. Regardless of whether you knew I was listening or not.”

And there was the rub. You hadn’t expected him to come during your meltdown, let alone actually hear you berating yourself to the degree that you had been. Had you known you’d had an audience you would’ve at least had the sense to lock yourself in the bathroom or something, but instead you’d just had to cry your heart out in the middle of your bedroom floor.

You must’ve looked so pathetic to him in that moment.

“Stop.” Ari commands, the single word spoken like a heated caress against your ear. “Whatever mean thought you’re thinkin’, I’m tellin’ you to knock it off right now.”

“H–how?” Your question comes out muffled thanks to the fact that your face is still hidden in his neck.

“You have a tendency to tense up whenever you’re being unkind to yourself, sweet girl.” He replies with a shrug before forcing you to pull away from him so that he can look into your eyes.

“I–I do?” No one had ever thought to share that with you before.

“Yep. Sure do.” He pinches your nipple as his gaze briefly drops to your bare cunt. “As your man, it’s my job to notice these things. Even when all I wanna do is bury my fingers knuckle-deep inside that tight little pussy until you’re drippin' and speaking in tongues, this shit comes first.”

Your hips jerk of their own volition when Ari reaches down to tenderly cup your sensitive core, massaging your damp flesh. Instantly you feel your slick honey coating his palm, making your cheeks heat.

It didn’t help that you always seemed to end up naked around this man while he stayed fully clothed. In the past you’d only read about that kind of power dynamic. But these days you were beginning to enjoy it.

“So tell me what has my woman being so hard on herself today? Be honest, now.” He presses as his fingers go trail their way along your belly, an action that has you immediately sucking in your stomach.

“Can we please turn off the lights?” You ask, feeling somehow both shy and stubborn at the same time. “At least some of them?”

“No.” He hisses back, not to be outdone. “You’re too beautiful not to look at, Bird. I might as well be a moth drawn to your flame, that’s how much hope there is for me these days.”

“But I hate my belly. It’s so…soft.” You tell him, finally willing to admit defeat. “And I pulled all these sweaters out of storage today – from my thinspiration pile – and they fit even worse than they did then when I first bought them.”

Your Bounty Hunter stares down at you for a moment, his brow furrowed in confusion.

“Thinspiration?”

“Yeah.” You hiccup, appreciating when he offers you a sip of his scotch, even when it makes you cough. “It’s like when you buy a shirt or a dress – or in my case a bunch of sweaters – that are too small for you so you can use them as inspiration to…you know…finally drop the weight.”

“Oh, Jesus H. Fucking Christ.” He snarls under his breath before taking a deep pull of his drink. “That’s what all this was about?”

Sheepishly you nod, as if finally realizing just how ridiculous you sounded. But at the time all of it had made perfect sense. “I figured it might help keep me from eating…too much.”

“Sweetheart…” His deep voice rumbles low in his chest as he polishes off what’s left of his scotch. “Fuck those sweaters, fuck the jeans, and whatever the fuck else is in that stupid fucking thinspiration box, or bag, or whatever. I mean it.”

One of Ari’s big hands reaches out to take hold of your chin, making it damn near impossible to look away from him.

“You and me are gonna get rid of that box.”

“But, Beast –”

“No.” His grip tightens ever so slightly. “That’s not good for you, baby. It never was. And I don’t ever want to hear you disrespecting yourself like that again. I really don’t. Broke my fucking heart.” Ari leans in to brush his mouth over yours, his free hand taking every advantage to stroke and caress its way along your body. “And it really pissed me the fuck off.”

“I’m sorry.” You mumble as fresh tears spill over onto your cheeks. “I–I’ll try to work on it.”

“These curves of yours are a gift from God, you hear me?” He muses as kisses away a tear. “Or the Devil himself. Depends on who you’re asking I suppose. There’s nothing I love more than watching those hips sway in one of your pretty sundresses, or seeing that luscious ass bounce every time I spank it.”

“You do seem to have a hard time keeping your hands to yourself, Sir.” You respond playfully through a watery grin.

“Mmhm. The only thing better is when you’re busy holdin’ me hostage.” Ari flips your positions so that he’s on top of you know, effectively pinning you against the couch so that he can grind his denim-covered erection against your damp folds. “Keepin’ me trapped as your love slave while I work my ass off to satisfy that greedy pussy long until we both pass out”

“Hey…” You pout, shivering when he nips at your bottom lip. He tugs it into his mouth, sucking hard before releasing it with a soft pop. “I thought you liked the job.” You press your hands against either side of his bearded face, pulling him down for a proper kiss.

“Oh, I love the job. Gorgeous girl. Great pay, benefits.” He nuzzles a path of hot, wet kisses along the column of your throat, loving how it makes you giggle. “All the pussy I can eat.”

“Wow.” You breathe, torn somewhere between lust and humor.

“But in all seriousness, Bird, the only thing I ever want is to see you happy. Keeping that box, holding on to whatever the fuck that was supposed be…” You press a finger to his lips, pausing him mid-sentence.

“I don’t want to just throw them away. I mean, they’ve still got the tags on them and everything. But there is a women’s shelter in the next county. Do you think maybe we could..?”

Ari nods once, giving you a warm smile as he does. Knowing that you’d managed to please him has a fresh wave of slickness coating your already slippery thighs.

“As long as you agree to let me keep you naked and stuffed full of my cock for the rest of the weekend, we can do whatever the fuck you want.” He hitches one of your legs over his shoulder, dragging his tongue along the soft skin of your calf. “And since you seemed to listen so well, I suggest you lay back and relax, because, baby…”

“We both just earned ourselves a treat.”

All animal species (and a couple algae) that have kept the same scientific name since Linnaeus

The first work of taxonomy that is considered as having any scientific authority for animal species was the 10th edition of Linnaeus' Systema Naturae, published in 1758. (Also a book on spiders called Aranei Suecici, published one year before.) That's the foundational text of the binominal system of nomenclature of species still in use today. Since then most of Linnaeus' original species (4379 species, of which 185 mammals, 554 birds, 217 "amphibians" (including reptiles and cartilaginous fish), 379 fishes, 2104 "insects" (including various arthropods, of which 664 are beetles and 543 are moths & butterflies crammed into only 3 genera), and 940 "worms" (including basically all other invertebrates, and even some protists and algae)) have been dismembered, renamed, or at least moved to different genera (e.g. the house sparrow went from Fringilla domestica to Passer domesticus).

Here is a list of all of Linnaeus' original species from 1758 that still retain their original name. I believe they are 484 in total.

Rewatch? Hmm... I kind of want to rewatch Station 19 again from the start after the series finale that's supposed to be out this spring/summer.

What’s a book or fic you will probably re-read this year?

Not sure I have any fic that I want to reread, there's still too many on my to read list 🤷‍♀️

Kind of the same answer to the above for books, but I guess I'm about due for a reread of The Glass Castle since my sister got me Jeannette Wall's new one for Christmas. Also it's been awhile since I read Fragile Beasts by Tawni O'Dell and I've been randomly thinking about it again lately.

What’s a tasty treat you look forward to eating more of this year?

Not to sound like a food weirdo but I'm kinda at a point where I feel comfortable with my regular food intake and there's a lot of things I used to love that don't work for me anymore... but I'll always be someone who chases every meal with something containing dark chocolate

What’s a time sink that you will continue to sink time into this year?

I don't know what's truly considered a time "sink", it sounds kind of like it could have negative connotations if I say my kids but my kids and spouse are the biggest part of my time and I'd like to keep it that way. I haven't written much lately but I'd like to get back in the swing of it. I will sink as much time into the beach as humanly possible once again this summer, like always 😎

Did you pick up any habits in 2023 that you plan to continue?

Not necessarily a habit, but I've been trying to get back into lap swimming lately and I'd like to do that over the winter

What’s your toxic trait?

Being too hard on myself, negative self talk I guess but I don't respond well to positive reinforcement 😂

What is a coping mechanism you will continue to indulge in this year?

Running. Always running until the old body decides it's time to quit.

Tell me something you like about how you look!:

I haven't given up on how I look, but I've given up on caring if I fit someone else's idea of beauty or attractiveness - which has been a lifelong struggle really - and I gave up the gender expectations. It's been freeing to find a place of physical strength that I've never had before and allow it to be about that and only that, not about how it makes me look.

Okay okay so I lied, I am very, very proud of these!!! Those are all concepts for an AU of Homestuck but JJBA that I thought of with my girlfriend a year and a half ago! I had so much fun designing the clothes and the poses and the stands and just trying my hand at making it all look in the style of JoJo! Not as satisfied as I’d like with Kanaya’s design, it misses a little oomf, but it is passable. To learn more about the AU and to see a Vriska WIP, look under the cut!

The AU would be reminiscent of Jojo Part 4 for a more Slice of Life type of story where they would just deal with life but with stands; a bit like a retelling of Homestuck with all the drama and gruesome bits included without the SBURB part. Since we see most of that with the trolls, it would be focused on them first and the human kids would join in later on. All the trolls’ stands are based on their lusus/dancestor and their names are alliteration from their astrological signs and a color adjacent word. (ardant aries, tawny taurus, gilded gemini, carmine cancer, lush leo, verdant virgo, livid libra, steely scorpio, sorrowful sagittarius, covenant capricorn, aramanthine aquarius, patriarch pisces) The stand’s abilities are based on the troll’s strife specibus and/or natural power. For example, when Sollux summons/wears his stand Gilded Gemini, he can literally fly and shoot laser beams and every other psionics that Sollux can do in the Homestuck cannon, because his stand’s in-universe is able to manipulate the electromagnetism of its user. (Still gotta brainstorm it so Sollux’s stand has two forms because duh.) In this AU, Gamzee would be able to see stands without having one of his own... that is until it’s revealed that he does; Covenant Capricorn would be the type of stand that is harmful to it’s user like Cheap Trick in Diamond is Unbreakable - it would possess/puppeteer Gamzee into committing crimes and other nefarious activities. Also my concept for Feferi’s stand would have been a Eldritch Terror’s mouth that would appear on the crown of her head which would mind control anyone in hearing range of it! The human kids are in this AU too! I didn’t draw any concept for them yet, though I was thinking their stands would be based around their classpects, design and power wise. Ironically enough, being the most into ghost and supernatural related shenanigans, John/June would be the only one who wouldn’t be able see the stands at all at first! Which would bring situations where in their perspective, they’d see Karkat and Dave posing menacingly in front of each other in a weird stand off, and then one of them would collapse on the floor while the other got a bloody nose out of nowhere and they’d be like “WTF just happened, what??”

“Do you want me to spank you?” Jefferson growled under his breath, listening to the sound of you hissing and yowling like you were either dying or on the verge of killing someone.

“Kitten I swear-“ another object was nudged from the second floor another clatter that had ended in the object being broken and discarded.

“Having troubles, magician?” The door opened and shut, the appearance of the other thorn in his side giving him a greater headache. “Kitten got you down?”

“Fuck off, she’s in a bad mood.” Jefferson scowled in his cottage just as he had scowled outside when he saw you sitting as a cat in the window with an animalistic glare on your face. “And she won’t come down.”

“Cat,” Curtis stepped forward toward the second floor and drummed his fingers against the staircase railing, “come down from there.”

“Why would she listen to you? She’s mine-“

“And mine.” Curtis stated his claim with aggression. “Do not forget that.”

“Cat,” Curtis addressed you again, taking in your appearance as your kitten body wiggled at the top of the stairs before you launched yourself at him.

Curtis caught you mid-air and tucked you into his chest, slipping the tawny collar that was around your neck off.

As it fell to the floor, you had become your human self again, snuggled tight against Curtis, his hands holding you steady.

“Happy Monday, kitten.” He grumbled and shot a look back at Jefferson. “You don’t deserve her.”

“Neither do you.”

Ari laid out the last mat, lining it up neatly with the others.

Six would stay in this room on the mats, the others would take the mini masters. Two to each bed and one additional mat on the floor of the room. They couldn’t have their own room or their own bed, but at least it’s better than the grass they might have been sleeping on before.

She paused as she laid a cover on top of the mat, twisting the fabric between her fingers. How long had it been, since they had really felt any sort of comfort? Living outside, sleeping on the ground, scavenging for scraps. She knew that the latter must have been particularly hard the closer they came to the farm; she’d gathered everything edible within a nearly five mile radius and brought it all back to the storeroom ages ago.

When did they lose Wonwoo? Was it right before they left the city? If it was, then they left in bad spirits, with no plan, nowhere to go. It must have been so hard, she thought. Still, as much as she felt for them, as strange and wonderful as it was to have the members of Seventeen around, they couldn’t stay. “A few days,” she muttered to herself. “They can only stay a few days. Finish helping Halbi and then they have to go.” And no matter what, she thought to herself, do not get attached.

“We got sesame and soybeans, rice, tomatoes, potatoes, onion, green onion, garlic, peppers. Over there’s cabbage and lettuce; we got wheat and a bit of squash and cucumber, corn, carrots. Didn’t use to grow quite so much but after everything happened and we weren’t selling harvest anymore, didn’t make much sense for us to have pounds of soybeans go to waste when we could grow us something else to eat.”

“Haraboji, you take care of all these fields yourself?” Jun asked in awe. “That’s amazing.”

“Well, it ain’t easy, but I been farming my whole life. I do enough to get us by.” Halbi sighed. “Truth is, I’d like to do more. We do what we can, but crops still go to rot if I can’t get to ‘em in time. Even after that, with just the two of us here, we save more’n we can eat fresh. More’n half of it’s frozen down in the basement. It’s damn waste and a shame.”

The members all exchanged quiet looks amongst themselves.

“Well, anyway! Here are the girls!” They approached a chicken coop, several dark and tawny chickens plucking away at the ground lazily.

“That’s how you have eggs,” Soonyoung commented to himself.

“Exactly so. Important to stay healthy at times like this, so we keep good eggs, got the soybeans to make some tofu. Gongjunim keeps the beef locked down with an iron fist unless it’s for special occasions, so we get us our protein in other ways.”

“Sorry?”

“Beef?”

“The what?”

“You have meat?”

Halbi laughed at their eyes, wide with awe. “Don’t tell her I told ‘ya or she’ll throw herself into a fit. Truth is, this ain’t the only farm Gongjunim took care of. Old bastard I knew from way back had a cattle farm, not but the other side the mountains over there.” He pointed off to the edge of the farm where a small crest of mountains surrounded the property line. “Well, ‘bout a year after she got here, he had some trouble with equipment, woulda shut him down for a while without replacing it, but he didn’t have the money. Everyone fell on hard times ‘round then. Gongjunim offered quick as a flash to fix it up for him. I introduced them right after she moved here. Girl loves beef more than anything; think it’s cause it’s one of the only things she can eat.” He laughed. “Well, anyway. She bought his farm from him, too. When things started happening, he killed just as many cows as he could, processed ‘em right, packed ‘em up, and brought it all here. Stayed with us till he passed on, too. Not all that long ago, actually. Just about a few months, when it was still snowin’ hard.”

“And, and you still have the meat?” Jihoon asked.

“Too much,” Halbi said, shaking his head. “She’s determined to make it last as long as possible. Says she wants to have some in case of an emergency, but she always lets us have some on our birthdays, and we still make a point to cook a good meal for Chuseok.”

The members swallowed thickly at the thought of meat. Whatever they had left in their freezers had run out quickly after the outbreak, and it’s a meal they haven’t had since.

Halbi laughed. “Well you just help an old man finish his chores later. We’ll get you some meat before you get on your way!”

“Really?!”

“Thank you, Haraboji!”

“But…will Ari-ssi be okay with it?”

“Ack, don’t worry about her! You do right by the farm, she’ll do right by you. She might not be too happy about it at first, but I told ‘ya, she’ll want it, too. She won’t say no.”

“What else is there? Dishes are done,” Ari counted on her fingers, “laundry’s been rerun, showers wiped down, beds are set up. I can’t clean their shoes right now since they’re wearing them.”

As she wandered down the hallway, she lingered by the door. The one that stayed closed, locked behind a passcode. It was the only room in the house to have a separate smart lock. She was surprised none of the boys had asked about it yet, but then again, they had other things on their mind. She glanced toward the front door. It didn’t sound like they were coming back from their tour any time soon, so she quickly entered the passcode and slipped inside, closing the door behind her.

The sight that greeted her was the same as it always was: the plush, oversized couch, her favorite iridescent coffee table, the multiple, oversized stuffed dolls, and the shelves, filled to the brink with her favorite albums.

Her eyes landed on one shelf in particular, and she smiled softly, moving toward it easily. The Caratbong which she’d decorate herself shined in the light, and she pulled a random album off the shelf. She flipped through the photobook slowly. “They all look so different now.”

They were still the same boys she saw in the photos, but aged, more tired, slightly thinner from lack of food, and if she were being honest, they could all use a decent haircut. She laughed to herself, flipping another page before pursing her lips tight.

Wonwoo stared back at her, leaning casually against an old counter. His all black leather suit matched his sleek black hair. Gently, Ari settled a shaking hand on top of the page. Did it hurt? Did he suffer? She hoped not. She hoped it was quick. Hoped there was no lengthy infection, hoped he’d gotten a bullet through the brain before he could become one of those things.

“Sorry,” she choked out in a whisper. “So sorry, Wonwoo. If I had known you all were still alive,” Ari sniffed, “if I had known, I would have saved you all.”

She took a deep breath, throwing her head back to stop the tears from falling. She slammed the album shut and shoved it back into the shelf. She turned sharply and left the room, wiping at her face angrily.

“A week?” Ari yelped. “You want them to stay a whole week?”

“Keep your voice down, now. Those boys are trying to sleep.”

“Halbi, a week, are you insane?! That’s longer than we’ve let anyone stay!”

“That’s long enough for ‘em to help me with the fence and the fields.”

“And long enough for them to get comfortable!” Ari hissed in return. “What if they just expect to stay longer after everything is finished?”

“How can they expect to stay any longer,” Halbi groused, gesturing toward her, “when you keep reminding ‘em they ain’t welcome?”

Ari huffed. “They have to know they aren’t.”

“And why not?” Halbi asked in return. “If those boys turn out to be good with the work, why not let ‘em stay?”

“Why not?” Ari repeated disbelievingly. “Because we don’t know them? Because that’s too many people? Because,” she continued meaningfully, “you know they’d never…no one can…understand. They can’t know.” She hung her head momentarily, pain beginning to tingle behind her eyes. She smacked the rag down onto the counter suddenly. “Besides, you think they’re nice now - what about when it comes time for them to leave? You think they won’t show their true colors? Try and force us to let them stay? And the house can’t handle all of us, anyway. We’d be packed.”

“Not a single person in this world able to threaten this farm and you know that,” Halbi gave her a stern look. “We’ll do what we have to if it comes to having to do it, like we always have. And if they stay, you can get to know ‘em. Handsomest group of boys I’ve seen come across our farm since the start. I’m surprised you’re not fallin’ all over yourself, them being some of those idol singers and all.” He reprimanded her with a shaking finger. “And what’s all this ‘bout the house? House’ll last longer than any of us will, them solar powers and our well is more’n enough.”

When she didn’t respond, Halbi sighed. “Come sit, brat.”

Ari sniffed, frowning as she shuffled over and plopped down beside him on the sofa. “More’n anything,” he started, placing a hand on her head, “an old man ain’t gonna be around forever. You’re stubborn as a damn mule, but even you can’t handle the whole farm and the house on your own. Now that it’s just us two, I need someone here that’s gonna look after ya’ once I’m gone.”

“Don’t,” Ari whispered softly through tight teeth. “Don’t even talk about that.”

“You may not like it, Gongjunim, but death is a part of this life, too. I’ll be damned if I leave you alone to fend for ya’self. Now, those boys seem like good, decent kids. If I can teach ‘em the farm, once I’m gone, they can take care of ya’. You might even get yourself a lover if you’d be a little nicer.”

“What?!” she squawked.

Halbi laughed. “Ah, all you youngsters these days are so sensitive about sex. You’re a pretty young lady, and they’re a bunch of handsome men. Now I’ve told ‘em to mind their manners around ya’, but they’re still men, after all. Probably not seen a girl pretty as you in a while. At least one of em’s gotta have eyes on ya’. You just make sure they don’t go puttin’ hands on ya’ without your say so.”

“Halbi, I’m very uncomfortable right now,” Ari said stoically, shaking her head.

The old man laughed, throwing his head back. “You just think about it.” He gave her head another pat. “Bound to happen sooner or later, finding someone we want to stay with us. I’m just sayin’. They might be the best we’ll get.” He groaned as he stood, pushing himself up from his knees. “I’m turnin’ in. You don’t stay up too late.”

“Night night, Halbi,” she said as she stood, too, offering a small bow.

“How many times I gotta tell you to quit bowin’ to an old man?”

Ari smiled in return as he made his way up the stairs. “I’ll always bow to my Halbi.”

“Ack!” He waved her off again before disappearing out of sight, and Ari stared after him, trying to push everything he had just said from her mind.
