ok rewatched narnia here’s my thoughts:

lww: unbelievable how good this was. the balls they had to throw themselves heart and soul into lewis’ insane world, to take everything he said seriously and at face value, to not tone down on the obnoxious symbolism of it all. weta workshop and the composer of the chicken run soundtrack and the director of shrek and shrek 2 doing for narnia what had been done for lotr. impeccable

prince caspian: literally every single choice they made was sooooo sexy in the way viggo is sexy as aragorn. ben barnes and his silly little fake spanish accent and his frilly nightshirt and the telmarines grovelling before miraz and saying ‘yes your beastlyness’ and plotting to stab him in the back and miraz hamming it up with his fur cloak and little gold earring and glenstorm and his beautiful centaur sons and edmund shattering jadis and the narnians trapped in the courtyard and the ruins of cair paravel and the trees and the river god and the call by regina spektor. literally the only thing that could have made this film sexier was the literal bacchanalia susan and lucy and aslan attend in the book.

dawn treader: didn’t watch this one because it made me so upset when i was sixteen. i remember eustace was amazing in it tho. it came out in 2010 and disney bough marvel in 2009 i think these things are related but i have some more timeline stuff to figure out bear with me

Hello, I am writing a 'Apocalypse' story that also has mythical creatures in it and I am unsure how strong I should make them compared to humans. One of the main characters is a 16 year old Elf who was trained since he was ten, and I don't want him to be too strong. Elfs can use Runes and subtle illusions in my story. I am unsure on the power levels of other Mythical creatures (like Fae, Ghouls, Centaurs, Merpeople and Chimera) as well.

They should be as strong as the story requires. There is noconcrete answers here, just world building, which is, ultimately, on you.

Let’s start with your main character. Elves (or Elfs, if youprefer) aren’t real, so they don’t age at a fixed rate. Which means, saying he’s 16years old isn’t that useful. I understand the intent behind yourstatement, but it’s probably important to step back for a minute.

If we’re taking D&D’s setting basics, and running withthose, a 16 year old elf is a small child. Conversely, D&D’s perfectlyhappy to call a 16 year old human an adult. This is, of course, assuming yoursetting’s elves aren’t completely ageless, come into existence fully matured,and then never change.

It’s worth remembering, when you’re building a fantasysetting, that you control all of thevariables. Sure, your human characters should, probably, come across as mostlyhuman, in most cases, but even that’s not set in stone. Accusations thatAragorn is unrealistic are fairly rare, and this is a character who’s in his80s. (And, yes, there’s an entire internal justification for that, but Tolkien’srace of Men aren’t really human. They’re another flavor of mythical beings,like his elves and dwarves. Aragorn is a step further from that, but the point stands.)

When you’re talking about elves, that’s a very open topic.Depending on your source of inspiration, that could be anything from beingsthat are basically human characters, that have access to very advanced magic ortechnology (and no, this isn’t an oblique Stargate reference), a variety of fae, normalpeople who’ve been altered by some release of magical energy, or just another sentient species wandering your world. It’s up to you to define who and what they are, in your setting.

This also spills over into what sets them apart from a “normal”character. What your elves areis influenced by what you want to talk about. (Because your main character is an elf, their nature is far more important than if they were a minor side element in your setting.) Once you have that, thenyou can start to extrapolate how your elves are different from other beings inyour setting. This could be as simple as your character being lumped in withthe other mythical beasts and viewed as a different flavor of monster by thepeople he’s trying to save (or not), or it could be a coming of age story. Thiswill seriously influence what your elves are. How alien they are. How they age.What their society looks like. It also affects how strong they are. Dependingon what you’re creating, it’s entirely possible your character is already asuperhumanly powerful engine of destruction by 16, whether he has the emotionalmaturity to handle that or not. In turn, that would seriously influence howelves are perceived by others in your setting. Or, he could still be a small child. Where he lands between these points is something that needs to fit the story you’re trying to tell.

To varying degrees, the same is true of the other creaturesin your world. If they’re supposed to be incredibly powerful, to the point thatnormal beings can’t even slow them down, the apocalypse is an extinction eventin motion, then that’s your answer. If they’re more of an environmental hazardthat a well equipped group can deal with, again, that’s your answer. If they’rea nuisance that only becomes a serious problem in large numbers, you get theidea. In practice, you’ll probably want a mix of these things, depending onwhat your setting needs. It’s entirely reasonable that you’ve got fairly commonthreats like ghouls that can be dealt with, while still having far more powerfulbeings like titans or leviathans wandering the world wrecking things. How theseinterrelate will be influenced by the story you want to tell.

World building starts with the idea of wanting to tell astory, and having a vague idea of what you want to talk about. Thenextrapolating a world that supports those ideas. Finally, you go back throughand start nailing down the fine details, like, “how powerful are these monsters?”or, “how did people react to their arrival?”

This leaves me in a slightly awkward place: without knowingwhat you’re trying to do, you’re asking for some of the final detail workwithout knowing what you wanted to do in broader strokes.

At a very basic level, the more powerful the creatures are,the more severely isolated human communities will be. I’m using power as an aggregatehere, endless swarms of easily dispatched monsters that will overwhelm andobliterate can be more effective than a skyscraper sizedbehemoth that shrugs off any injury.

At the extreme end, humans may be restricted to a handful ofsmall enclaves, and extinction could be imminent. On the other hand, you couldeasily have a setting where survivors have retaken and fortified entire cities,with heavily armed caravans wandering between, and smaller enclaves scatteredacross the world.

It’s entirely possible you’re setting up an environment likeThe Witcher. There are monsters, butthey’re more of a pest than a real threat, and the apocalypse which unleashedthem on the world is a dim memory.

There’s an old cop-out answer on physics exams, “theproblem cannot be solved with the available information.” That seems to applyhere. When you’re building your world, you have the ability to shape it to fit your narrative.Think about the kind of story (or stories) you want to tell in it, and buildyour setting accordingly.

asked by @themerriweathermage to celebrate my 100 followers \^o^/ and because your inspiration is the centaur from Narnia, i I used the knowledge and characteristics of the centaurs from these movies :D

Elrond

-the first time he sees the centaur near Imladris, he is a little suspicious

-he thinks it may be a new race that Sauron has corrupted

-to be sure, he took some soldiers with him and rode to meet the centaur

-the fact that the centaur is alone makes Elrond believe that he has escaped from where Sauron held him prisoner

-when he introduces himself and starts a conversation with the creature and the centaur explains what he really is, Elrond is more than relieved

-to be forgiven for taking him for a servant of Sauron, the Lord of Rivendell invites him to stay in Imladris as long as he likes

-he is pleasantly surprised to learn that centaurs have clairvoyant powers like him which leads to a lot of discussion on this subject, how they use it, the weight it sometimes gives

-he does his best to make the centaur feel good and comfortable

-when he learns that he has two stomachs, a human and a horse one , he does his best to offer him the right food

-when he sees the way the centaur fights he is impressed and often asks him for advice when he has to prepare his cavalry

-the centaur will do him the honor of riding him bareback

Thranduil

-if you are not from his kingdom you are an intruder and therefore a possible enemy, no discussion for the moment

-the centaur will be brought to his throne and asked to introduce himself and explain his presence in Mirkwood

-he is very intrigued by the appearance of the creature in front of him and wants to know more

-"you are not a prisoner here, you are free to leave but I invite you to stay for a while. You will be treated with all honors. What do you say?”

-they share their medical and strategic knowledge

-since the trees of Mirkwood prevent the sky from being seen easily and since the centaur cannot climb the branches, Thranduil agrees to leave his kingdom so that the centaur can teach him astronomy

-does he like to race between the centaur and him on his wapiti ? YES

Galadriel

-knew about the existence of centaurs in Middle-earth but had never seen any, or very very briefly

-has a lot of respect for them

-so the day she meets one of them, she tries to make sure she doesn't ruin it with a word, a careless or disrespectful gesture

-she still doesn't know if they speaks her language but she tries anyway

-she is trying to establish a friendship between her and the centaur, to the point he is intrigued and comes to see her more and more often

-they become good friends and very quickly a promise is made between the two: if the people of one of them need help, the other will come with the help

-she will never dare to ask him if she can ride on his back and will refuse when he offers her himself

Bard

-WHAT.IS.THAT.

-he was quietly taking care of his boat when he heard strange noises in the forest and believing in orcs, he took his bow and went in the direction of the noises, silent and on the lookout

-he did not expect to meet such a creature, half man, half horse

-he has no idea what he is dealing with, he has never heard, seen or read anything about it

-Can this thing talk? It looks a little human. Is it dangerous ? where does it come from ? what is it doing there ?

-he refuses to leave, too surprised and curious

-so he decides to put down his bow and arrows, raises his hands as a sign of peace, comes out of his hiding place and advances towards the creature slowly

-"Hello, strange creature. My name is Bard and I mean you no harm. Do you understand what I am saying?"

-Do you see how Aragorn talks to the horses? This is what Bard is trying to do here

-he feels a little bit stupid when the centaur answers him like a normal human

-he is SO CONFUSED

-the centaur answers all his questions

-he is reassured to know that the weapons carried by the centaur are for the Orcs and not for his village

-he takes advantage of a meeting with Gandalf to tell him about this meeting and to make sure that it was not a hallucination

-he only talks about this meeting with his daughters and his son

-sometimes he finds dead bodies of Orcs killed by arrows that he recognizes as belonging to the centaur he saw

-he returns from time to time to the depths of the forest in the hope of seeing the centaur again

Thorin

-he was convinced that centaurs only existed in children's stories

-after the moment of surprise and shock, he will politely introduce himself

-he won't be able to help asking if everything that is said in the books is true about them

-but he is extremely careful not to overstep the mark, he does not want to provoke a diplomatic incident from the start

-after all, if the centaurs are as good warriors as the stories say, he prefers to have them on his side and maybe make an alliance with them

-he is admiring when he sees the centaur fighting against Orcs : efficient, fast, dangerous, incredibly powerful

Eomer

-the first thing he feels when he sees such a creature for the first time is not surprise, or fear, no no no

-he is fangirling to a point you can’t imagine

-like, “THIS GUY IS FRONT OF ME IS A PERFECT MIX BETWEEN A HORSE AND A MAN IT’S INCREDIBLE OHMYGODOHMYGODOHMYGOD !”

-his new goal in life is to become the best friend of this creature

-documents himself on the centaurs with all the scrolls, legends, rumors that he finds

-doesn’t stop talking to his sister about it

-he is so admiring and joyful when he tries to talk to the centaur after seeing him decimate a bunch of orcs that some of his men think he has fallen in love with him

-insists to Theoden that Rohan should try to establish an alliance with the centaurs

-does his best to convince the centaur that an alliance between them and the humans would be a good idea

Aragorn

-he can't believe his eyes

-he approaches the centaur with precaution, for fear of frightening him

-he makes it clear that he is not an enemy

-he is impressed when he sees the centaur defeating a bunch of orcs on his own

-he is a bit like Eomer and finds it absolutely amazing to see and talk to such a creature

-When he became king of Gondor he did his best to establish an alliance between the city of Gondor and the centaurs

-he will be allowed to ride on his back

Lindir

-he saw the centaur from afar but did not dare to approach it

-is more than curious and fascinated to see such a strange creature

-and when he does he is stressed

-he invites the centaur in the library of Imladris

-both devour the books

-in exchange for being able to read the books, the centaur takes Lindir to beautiful places that he does not know, in search of medicinal plants or having virtues being very little known

-even if the elfe is not a warrior the centaur offers to train him to shoot with a bow on horseback

Names that I like.

Tobias - they considered naming me this, it’s my uncle’s name. I always thought I’d go for that one, but I dunno now. I’m not really a “Toby”. Pierce - was also a consideration, inspired by Pierce Brosnan. I just don’t know if I can fit that glove either. Rhys - looks great, I like it, but I start thinking about peanut butter cups Owen - kinda awkward, but bonus points for being hella close to my name Leon - I think i’d use this for a middle name. Several grandfathers had it.

... and for some reason I kind of like Gryffin. Probably ‘cos I could keep my initial. But is that too... I dunno. Fantasy? It’s a perfectly reasonable name if you’re born with it, but I don’t want to go around like “AH YES, I’VE NAMED MYSELF DRAGON CENTAUR HUNTER FOREST ARAGORN the THIRD, and I’M A DIPSHIT”.

I could just go with “Chance” after this blog name, but that seems a bit too... I dunno. Too sporty. I have a hard time imagining other people calling me that.
