(This happened to me several years ago and I’ve never trusted Apple with email again.) -Forcible erasure of all documents on your desktop. (Are these then put in iCloud? -Who knows. When the popup window warned that this was about to happen (and you had no choice in the matter), I quickly shuttled my desktop contents to an external drive so Apple couldn’t erase them. This insanity occurred during a recent Apple tech support call while trying to do what should have been the most elementary user interface task imaginable - dragging and dropping books from a desktop to an iPad. It was suggested that I turn on iCloud to see if that would solve my technical issue. It instead created a cascade of new problems.)

-Unannounced and involuntary Apple upload of music to your iPhone. (This also resulted from a troubleshooting phone call that involved the suggestion of, you guessed it, turning on fucking iCloud. It turns out that in my first obnoxious experience with iCloud years ago that a bunch of my song files were uploaded to the hell-Cloud. (Another problem with iCloud - you have no idea of what info of yours is stored in Apple’s cloud servers unless you risk havoc by turning iCloud on.) These then magically reappeared on my phone recently during said tech support call.)

I could go on.

So, what’s the problem with iCloud?

Across corporations there’s push to hook you into subscriptions and rental systems, to upsell you on add-ons, functions, and services you don’t need. Apple is no different. The white shoe finance bros have won.

With iCloud Apple wants to accustom you to doing without external hard drives. After all, your data is monetizable, even if it’s just your family photo albums or work spreadsheets or song files. Apple’s trick is to limit your control over what goes into the cloud. You can’t upload just your top 5 songs to iCloud, you have to give Apple permission to nab all your music files, or photos, or documents, or... The reasoning is straightforward: “you” more quickly use up your “free” iCloud storage. And then, voila - your data can’t be backed up anymore. You have to upgrade to a paid version of iCloud. Apple sprains your finger and then sells you a splint.

In theory, free storage space in the cloud sounds like a good deal - simple and uncomplicated and free. But this is not what iCloud is. iCloud is first and foremost one of many ways Apple and other companies try to upsell you on a needless service. What’s worse, Apple uses strong-arm tactics, threatening and performing deletions and erasures of files for no other reason than to push you into using their craptastic iCloud service.

40 years of the Mac and why I can’t use anything else now

By the time I was buying my first Apple Macintosh computer the launch of the Mac in 1984 was already a myth, a story shared from one nerd to another, like an Aboriginal Australian cave painting.

In grade five there was an Apple IIe at the back of the classroom no-one knew how to use but when I realised that the computer magazines at the library full of computer programs and games written in Basic contained not just ideas and lines of code - yes, actual real code just printed in paper magazines - but code I could type into an Apple computer, execute, and then enjoy, I was hooked.

I kept on reading those computer magazines like APCMag, PC User, PCMag, Macuser, Mac Format, and countless others whose names escape me but the school library stocked so generously.

At one stage I designed on paper my dream computer which would triple-boot Microsoft Windows, OS/2 Warp, and Mac OS System 8. I think a “Mac on a PCI card” product had been released, or the opposite for inserting in a Mac, so I designed my Frankenstein’s monster of a computer and presented it to class imagining that they would a) care, and b) be in awe of my product design and computer engineering. Alas neither Steve Jobs or Bill Gates wrote and congratulated me.

I’m not sure how I wrangled it, but somehow our family acquired a Packard Bell IBM-compatible personal computer with a 486 SX 25/33 processor, 4MB of RAM, no sound card, but it did come with Windows 3.11.

The Radio Rentals rented computer and I quickly became close friends but somehow with its 25MHz CPU and 4MB of RAM the computer ran slower than a slug chasing down an ice cream truck.

Enter, my Uncle Grant.

Uncle Grant was my super uncle from Townsville who sold and serviced Apple computers. We’d not been on friendly talking terms about computers since I used his Apple Macintosh and neglected to save a document he had open, but he was quick to diagnose the problem with my computer’s speed: I had an image as my desktop wallpaper. Also, he was quick to quip that “a Mac wouldn’t have that problem.”

What he neglected to acknowledge is that a Withers didn’t have a spare buck either so we went without a Mac for about a decade more.

As I’m sure is the story for most modern Mac users, having your own personal Macintosh Desktop Experience was a dream for too long.

Years later Apple announced the Intel transition from Power PC chipsets and all of a sudden, thanks to an Intel Inside and Bootcamp, these new Macs can run Windows and Mac OS X which is the perfect justification for a nerd to make for a new Apple MacBook purchase.

All white and plastic, it was beautiful, and that new Apple MacBook never needed to be tainted by Bootcamp and Windows. It turned out that Mac OS is actually quite capable on its own.

Not quite as beautiful as that G3 iMac I acquired years after it was ever useful, but always be beautiful.

And that’s why I can’t use any other OS today. I’ve tried Windows and Linux of late, I’m always open to a change so I know I’m using the best tools for the job, but my taste gravitates to the Mac. It is beautiful, useful, and just plain nice. I’ve even tried the iPad as a main computer, or the phone. But it’ll always be the Mac for me. Happy birthday, and hello, old friend.

21 Day Europe Adventure September 2023

Part 1 Getting there and pickup our rental was an adventure itself!

Once we got to our hotel it definitely got a lot easier with only a feel bumps, but it can’t be an adventure without those! We figure it out and we learned so much!

On 9/1 we took a 7pm Aer lingus direct flight from JFK to fly directly to Dublin Ireland. With a 8 yo I thought I would give a night time flight to try sleeping on the plane so we could gain an extra day of site seeing.

The plan was to get to the airport early so we didn’t have to rush, but we got there too early and had to wait an hour before checking in our bags in and able to go thru security. Once we go thru security we where able to get dinner inside. I wanted to make sure my son was full before we boarded the plane. We grab burgers and bought water. I packed empty water bottles which I was able to keep our cool. I wanted to have water during our flight and when we arrived incase my son was thirsty. Once we boarded the plane we did receive dinner around 9pm then we attempted to go to sleep but due to so many babies crying we were unable to sleep. never been on a flight with babies that just kept crying before so I was not excepting this. Lesson learned! My son manage to sleep for 3 hours, he was so happy playing with the plane’s features it kept him very entertained with games and movies. However I did download lots of shows and movies on Disney plus and Netflix’s on his iPad as a backup. He did not even asked for his iPad which was a plus during the flight!

When arrived the next morning ( 8 hours ) it was 8am in Ireland but 4am in est time zone. We went directly to the car rentals in the airport assuming that our rental would be there. To my surprise it wasn’t. I was able to get wifi and get into my emails where I read the instructions from the rental. It instructed us to go to terminal 1 shuttle area and to call when we arrived so that a shuttle would pick us up. Since I could only use my data with my esim I purchase online via Airalo I could not make calls. I tried using my google voice but since it was not a US number I could not call the number. I had to ask one of the airport works to call for us, which they did and we were able to let them know we where waiting.

Once our shuttle came were where taken 5 mins away to a rental location where we waited to pay the balance our our rental. I was sure that our rental came with insurance but it didn’t. We were given a choice to leave a credit card with a 1,000 euros block or to add insurance for 500 euros. Since this was my first time driving on the left side we opt for the 500 euro option so we would be covered. Luckily we did not have any accidents just a few scares along the way 😀.

Here’s what the rental cost 10 days 9/2-9/11

$787 deposit( $164.47 ) plus insurance $651 total $1438

Once everything was paid for we were given a car similar to the suv all wheel drive that I requested online. The car was not clean properly, we requested them to clean it. As we where waiting we found out that the apple play was not working properly so we had to wait for a different car. After 3 hours they where able to get us a car with a working gps, which I’m not a fan off but it would be good for a backup Incase my gps lost connection. To my surprise the usb iPhone connectors worked and the car was able to connect to apple play but found that it drained my esim data to quickly.

Trick: One trick I learned was to place my phone on airplane mode once I got the directions so that the data from the esim would not drain so quickly. I was able to do 10 days off 3gb.

1st Hotel, Day 1 Glashaus Hotel right outside of Dublinin Tallaght. The hotel was extremely comfortable, clean and had access to transit. The hotel is very well located near a mall and an Aldi to purchase gallon of waters. Luas train is a 1 minute walk away and makes getting to Central Dublin quick and inexpensive. Since we had a rent a car we did not take the transit but we could see it right outside of our hotel room. The hotel did provided onsite parking.

We had arrived an hour early then checkin so we left our luggage there and went into the restaurant to have a late lunch. The food was delicious!

Although breakfast was not included we where able to purchase it after 9am at the restaurant right in the hotel. We checked out early, the first day was going to be a long drive. We checked out at 7am and headed to Northern Ireland.

Day 2 Here where our stops:

Stop 1: Malahide Castle

Stop 2: Breakfast at Cafe Provence Malahide

We checked into our hotel at 8pm booked dinner reservations for 8:45pm. The brought our bags to our room and we freshened up and went down to dinner then went to bed directly after dinner so that we could wake up at 7am to do an early morning hike to the causeways.

Day 3 Northern Island 7 am hike to the causeways

Tip: The earlier you go the better opportunity you get for photo ops. Less crowds!

The Giant's Causeway lies at the foot of the basalt cliffs along the sea coast on the edge of the Antrim plateau in Northern Ireland. Then we headed to the UNESCO MUSEUM: The Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast site was inscribed as a World Heritage Site (WHS) by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in 1988.

Took the trail down the causeway for old last view!

We then left Northern Ireland for almost a 3 hour drive to the Atlantic way in Donegal then to our hotel which was 23 mins away back north at the abbey hotel in the town of Donegal. When we arrived to the Atlantic way it reminded me of a beach town. This was our first encounter of rain. It started drizzling, we just hiked up the beach to see the view but were unable to climb because the rocks look slippery from the rain.
