I appreciate the attempt at a setting that approximates the effect of aperture adjustment, but really, rgg, just let us actually adjust the aperture. I’d really really like to see a proper photomode, but even just giving us aperture and exposure settings on the smartphone camera would improve the virtual photography experience overall

Hannah Jadagu - Aperture
(Indie Pop, Dream Pop, Indie Rock)
Hannah Jadagu’s Sub Pop debut places her squarely in the world of confessional indie rock while decorating it with hints of sophisti-pop, R&B, and noise pop that keep the edges blurred and the energy intense. Her intimate, hook-laden lyrics focus on what she chooses to carry into the future with her and the fear of what will happen to the things she lets go of.
☆☆☆☆
Like many of her bedroom pop contemporaries, Hannah Jadagu began making music on her phone, working in Garageband with the help of an iRig, guitar, and microphone,j her debut EP What Is Going On? the kind of homemade indie rock that’s easy to connect with and warm on the ears. What underlined those songs, though, was Jadagu’s smooth and mellow voice and sensitive lyrics, the indie rock she fell in love with in her sister’s car becoming the lifeblood of her own music. With the success of that EP came the opportunity to expand, her signing to iconic indie label Sub Pop giving her the space and connections to make even bolder, heavier music unbound to the limitations of MIDI instruments and an iPhone. Alongside French pop songwriter and producer Max Robert Baby, she began incorporating more analog elements into her music, thick percussion and warped synths replacing dry jangle guitars and drum loops, the twelve songs that became her debut album Aperture indebted to ‘00s indie rock as much as the church music and rap she grew up on. Her writing remains steadfast and emotionally charged between stylistic shifts, the new textures within her songs heightening the effect of her catchy-yet-surreal indie pop.
Balancing simple verse-chorus-verse pop music with the sharp edges and unexpected turns of alternative pop is Jadagu’s main concern with Aperture, and the album achieves those goals without sacrificing the main appeal of her music - the writing. For the most part, her songs remain structurally simple - singles Say It Now  and What You Did are both two verses and a chorus, while Warning Sign omits the chorus entirely for its moody sophisti-pop atmosphere - and it’s in the details where the character lies, the watery synths soundtracking family tension in Admit It or the kids choir-esque vocoder in the outro of Shut Down more important than playing with complex song structures or unconventional songwriting. The mood here is noisy guitars and rock drums, mellow vocals and dreamy effects, early highlight Say It Now’s slunking guitars and drowsy percussion befitting of Jadagu’s emotional denial within it, while the penultimate Letter to Myself surrounds her voice with slowcore guitars and synths that sparkle like fireworks before the drums kick in at the end - it’s all under the purview of indie rock, but Jadagu branches out her sound to keep you invested in how her storytelling works alongside it. Aperture is catchy, classic pop at its core, and Jadagu knows she doesn’t need much more to pull you in.
She doesn’t risk going outside of the alt-pop/indie rock sound here, but it’s not an issue when what’s here is so consistently rewarding. The post-punk revivalism of Lose and What You Did harness their blend of volatile instrumentation and introspective writing for some of the album’s most effective songcraft, working in opposition to the digitized vocals and clean pianos of Scratch the Surface or Warning Sign’s R&B leanings to add some grit without straying from her norm. There’s a precision to what she does even as the music commits itself to uneasy emotions, Six Months speeding and slowing down as it follows her anger towards someone who can’t invest themselves fully her and Dreaming centered on finding out a romantic interest is seeing someone and the immediate crash that comes with it by having the instrumentation suddenly drop out from under you. She’s a masterful songwriter and producer, and the polish Baby helps her put on these songs take them to another level, Aperture choosing when to open itself up to the light at the perfect moment for each song to be a pristine and vivid snapshot of what she’s feeling. Hannah Jadagu has had the foundation of her sound settled for a few years now, but Aperture still functions as an introduction to her by showing off what she’s able to achieve with more support behind her, how she can interweave different sounds around her melodic indie pop without losing the charm of her homespun EP. Her music is made to sink into, for the melodies to become earworms you hum throughout the day and are easy to listen to anytime, Aperture addictive through how easily it makes playing Jadagu’s songs on repeat. She knows what she wants to keep with her, and Aperture takes a perfect picture of all those memories.

This floating alien egg is Octameroceras, they're part of a group of cephalopods called Oncocerids which diverged earlier than the nautiloids and ammonites.
As they reach maturity, their shell opening, the aperture closes in on their face creating these Giger-esque shapes, and we can only speculate what bizarre mangled forms the creature peeping through that opening would have.

The Central AI Chamber exteriors r probably some of my favorite Valve has made like. Ever. I genuinely don't think either of them would pack as much punch as they do if the other wasn't there. Seeing GLaDOS' chamber, built up to like, 20 times it's original size rly shows she's 100 times more efficient than Aperture's architects ever were. She built the facility back up in a matter of days while it'd probably take humans decades just to clean all the plantlife and debris out. It's funny because there probably won't be anyone to witness all her hard work except Chell - she's built all this up either for herself, or for her, or perhaps both. And then Wheatley gets put in charge and it all goes to utter shit. It's almost equally as impressive how quickly Wheatley managed to royally fuck up the facility again (arguably even worse than the natural degradation ever did)
Tumblr media
We go through a co-op course that's still utterly wrecked after Wheatley's power trip, which gives the impression he's rendered certain chambers completely irreperable.
Tumblr media
As Chell finally approaches his lair and we see the Central AI Chamber again it looks nearly unrecognizable. It looks like it fuckin RUPTURED from within. He just peeled it apart like it's play doh and left it like that. Apart from whenever she has to deal with birds, chapters 8 and 9 have GLaDOS displaying the most distress she's ever shown over the course of both games. I mean, imagine you finally got around to cleaning your house after centuries of it sitting there, tilted sideways, gathering dust and dirt and sprouting roots everywhere, only for fuckin Booboo The Fool to come along and start smashing it apart for 5 seconds worth of euphoria. Her 12 year torture plan is probably extremely generous, all things considered, because I have a feeling she wouldn't have the self control not to just gut him on the spot and toss his empty shell down a bottomless pit.

Annular Solar Eclipse over Utah Image Credit & Copyright: MaryBeth Kiczenski
Explanation: Part of the Sun disappeared earlier this month, but few people were worried. The missing part, which included the center from some locations, just went behind the Moon in what is known as an annular solar eclipse. Featured here is an eclipse sequence taken as the Moon was overtaking the rising Sun in the sky. The foreground hill is Factory Butte in Utah, USA. The rays flaring out from the Sun are not real -- they result from camera aperture diffraction and are known as sunstar. The Moon is real, but it is artificially brightened to enhance its outline -- which helps the viewer better visualize the Moon's changing position during this ring-of-fire eclipse. As stunning as this eclipse sequence is, it was considered just practice by the astrophotographer. The reason? She hopes to use this experience to better photograph the total solar eclipse that will occur over North America on April 8, 2024.

Portal 12 Days of Christmas Prompt List
Tumblr media
What's this? Portal Christmas prompts? Sort of. Taking inspiration from the time of year, the celebrations, and the song itself, I'd like to present to you the Portal 12 Days of Christmas prompt list!
I did a lot of research to find prompts in four categories: prompts inspired by the song itself, prompts inspired by the various feasts and celebrations, prompts inspired by the more mundane aspects of the holiday, and of course Portal-specific prompts inspired by the first three in various ways.
While the actual 12 days of Christmas start at the end of the month, that time of year is far too busy for this sort of thing so I felt it would be better to post it earlier in the month to give people ample time to participate if they so choose.
Testing doesn't stop, even during the holidays, so let's bring some Aperture-themed cheer!
Written list and guidelines under the cut.
The rules are simple.
There's absolutely no obligation to participate every day. Some people are more busy than others this time of year, so participate at your own pace and comfort level. If you aren't inspired by a day's prompts or end up too busy to keep going, that's totally fine! It's all for fun.
Any medium you want to use is fine, whether physical or digital. Sketches, writing, felt work, renders, completed art… whatever sort of inspiration you might get!
Let's use the tag 'Portal 12 Days of Christmas' to track posts. I'll try to reblog any participating posts I see.
Prompts: Day 1: Trees, Feasting, Party, The surface Day 2: Partners, Mercy, Shopping, Companion Cube Day 3: Foreign/ the unknown, Devotion, Wine/drinks, Wheatley Day 4: Birds, Children, Role Reversal, GLaDOS' crows Day 5: Rings, Argument, Work, Portals Day 6: Eggs, Protection, Breakfast, Chell Day 7: Swimming/sports, Authority, New Year's Eve, GLaDOS Day 8: Farms, Mothers, New Year's resolutions, Lying when nervous Day 9: Dancing, Doctors, Friends, Atlas and P-Body Day 10: Flight, Names, Travel/visiting, Repulsion gel Day 11: Music, Education, Reading, Turret opera/GLaDOS singing Day 12: Time, Stars, Holiday cleanup, Cake

Cursed FNAF Au's that haunt my brain
Buzzfeed Unsolved/Ghost Files AU with Charlie and Mike, except Charlie is Shane and Mike is Ryan. They still post it on youtube and only respond to any questions about Freddy's with the most dated vines.
Afton Robotics is except it runs just as chaotically as Aperture Science, With all of the Cave Johnson dialogues instead being said by William.
Curse of the Were-Rabbit AU
Sister Location AU where Circus Baby realizes it's Mike and not their dad because Mike is VERY short and their father was not.
Security Breach AU where Vanessa only gets turned into Vanny when the most obnoxious pop music plays, so to combat this she turns her entire playlist into heavy metal songs and Security Breach only happens because she forgot to charge her airpods that day
Pizza Sim but Mike just locked everyone in the same room because god dammit Henry he's not doing this shit again stop letting them wander around, they don't need enrichment.
FNAF 1 but instead of the weird hallucinations or whatever, CC/Evan tells the other kids all of Mike's old embarrassing habits/moments and they use that to make fun of him. Mike hates every minute of it and would rather be fighting for his life instead.
A Charlie lives AU but only because she started cussing out everyone who locked her out/wasn't looking for her and Will thought it was funny when the 8 year old called her own father a jackass
Security Breach but it's both Cassie and Gregory who get stuck inside so Glamrock Freddy has to carry one of them on his shoulders. All of the animatronics still hate Greg but Love Cassie and he is mildly miffed about this. but only mildly.
I will update this more as I think of them but don't hesitate to add your own

NASA’s New Experimental Antenna Tracks Deep Space Laser
Capable of receiving both radio frequency and optical signals, the DSN’s hybrid antenna has tracked and decoded the downlink laser from DSOC, aboard NASA’s Psyche mission.
An experimental antenna has received both radio frequency and near-infrared laser signals from NASA’s Psyche spacecraft as it travels through deep space. This shows it’s possible for the giant dish antennas of NASA’s Deep Space Network (DSN), which communicate with spacecraft via radio waves, to be retrofitted for optical, or laser, communications.
By packing more data into transmissions, optical communication will enable new space exploration capabilities while supporting the DSN as demand on the network grows.
The 34-meter (112-foot) radio-frequency-optical-hybrid antenna, called Deep Space Station 13, has tracked the downlink laser from NASA’s Deep Space Optical Communications (DSOC) technology demonstration since November 2023. The tech demo’s flight laser transceiver is riding with the agency’s Psyche spacecraft, which launched on Oct. 13, 2023.
The hybrid antenna is located at the DSN’s Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex, near Barstow, California, and isn’t part of the DSOC experiment. The DSN, DSOC, and Psyche are managed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California.
“Our hybrid antenna has been able to successfully and reliably lock onto and track the DSOC downlink since shortly after the tech demo launched,” said Amy Smith, DSN deputy manager at JPL. “It also received Psyche’s radio frequency signal, so we have demonstrated synchronous radio and optical frequency deep space communications for the first time.”
In late 2023, the hybrid antenna downlinked data from 20 million miles (32 million kilometers) away at a rate of 15.63 megabits per second – about 40 times faster than radio frequency communications at that distance. On Jan. 1, 2024, the antenna downlinked a team photograph that had been uploaded to DSOC before Psyche’s launch.
Two for One
In order to detect the laser’s photons (quantum particles of light), seven ultra-precise segmented mirrors were attached to the inside of the hybrid antenna’s curved surface. Resembling the hexagonal mirrors of NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, these segments mimic the light-collecting aperture of a 3.3-foot (1-meter) aperture telescope. As the laser photons arrive at the antenna, each mirror reflects the photons and precisely redirects them into a high-exposure camera attached to the antenna’s subreflector suspended above the center of the dish.
The laser signal collected by the camera is then transmitted through optical fiber that feeds into a cryogenically cooled semiconducting nanowire single photon detector. Designed and built by JPL’s Microdevices Laboratory, the detector is identical to the one used at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory, in San Diego County, California, which acts as DSOC’s downlink ground station.
“It’s a high-tolerance optical system built on a 34-meter flexible structure,” said Barzia Tehrani, communications ground systems deputy manager and delivery manager for the hybrid antenna at JPL. “We use a system of mirrors, precise sensors, and cameras to actively align and direct laser from deep space into a fiber reaching the detector.”
Tehrani hopes the antenna will be sensitive enough to detect the laser signal sent from Mars at its farthest point from Earth (2 ½ times the distance from the Sun to Earth). Psyche will be at that distance in June on its way to the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter to investigate the metal-rich asteroid Psyche.
The seven-segment reflector on the antenna is a proof of concept for a scaled-up and more powerful version with 64 segments – the equivalent of a 26-foot (8-meter) aperture telescope – that could be used in the future.
An Infrastructure Solution
DSOC is paving the way for higher-data-rate communications capable of transmitting complex scientific information, video, and high-definition imagery in support of humanity’s next giant leap: sending humans to Mars. The tech demo recently streamed the first ultra-high-definition video from deep space at record-setting bitrates.
Retrofitting radio frequency antennas with optical terminals and constructing purpose-built hybrid antennas could be a solution to the current lack of a dedicated optical ground infrastructure. The DSN has 14 dishes distributed across facilities in California, Madrid, and Canberra, Australia. Hybrid antennas could rely on optical communications to receive high volumes of data and use radio frequencies for less bandwidth-intensive data, such as telemetry (health and positional information).
“For decades, we have been adding new radio frequencies to the DSN’s giant antennas located around the globe, so the most feasible next step is to include optical frequencies,” said Tehrani. “We can have one asset doing two things at the same time; converting our communication roads into highways and saving time, money, and resources.”
More About the Mission
DSOC is the latest in a series of optical communication demonstrations funded by NASA’s Technology Demonstration Missions (TDM) program and the agency’s Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program. JPL, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages DSOC for TDM within NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate and SCaN within the agency’s Space Operations Mission Directorate.

A Carolinalysis
Caroline was Cave Johnson’s assistant in the days of Aperture’s glory. We find her in the pre-recorded messages in Old Aperture. Later we piece together she was turned into GLaDOS. Caroline doesn’t show up much, her main appearance being in the pre-recorded messages, besides GLaDOS, who isn’t just a person, but also a supercomputer with programming and a job to do (and no emotional reaction to murder),
So what can we glean about Caroline from these pre-recorded messages?
1: WIT AND PASSION FOR SCIENCE, AND HOW THEY INTERACT:
Caroline’s sense of wit is apparent, with her “Good-bye, Caroline,” joke. It’s even a prominent enough quality that carried all the way over to GLaDOS. In fact, Caroline’s general tone during the pre-recorded messages fits her behavior on Portal 1 quite well. In Portal, GLaDOS is quite businesslike in manner, with the occasional joke here and there, such as when she yelled ‘Weeeee’ during one of the puzzles involving terminal velocity. Cave describes Caroline as the backbone of the facility, which shows when she steers Mr. Johnson away from the topic of Black Mesa with her simple utterance “Sir, the testing?” As GLaDOS puts it, she’s in it for the science. Caroline was passionate about science, like GLaDOS. But even while doing this, she maintains plenty of humor. Despite her businesslike approach to science, she still loves to drop in a joke. (Again, “Good-bye, Caroline.”)
2: HUMAN TESTING AND CAROLINE’S MORALS:
Her time at Aperture also shows that she condoned or at the very least tolerated the less-than-ethical human testing Aperture ran. I saw someone suggest that GLaDOS was subconsciously projecting that onto Chell when she said “You’re not a good person, you know. Good people don’t end up here.”
But what’s interesting is that Aperture Science testing gets less and less ethical as time goes on. It’s never great, but the participants are at least there willingly–astronauts, war-heroes, and Olympians–albeit they seem misinformed about what’s going on, and constantly put in danger without their knowledge, which carries over to all the lower-quality test subjects after them. Once they couldn’t afford to pay these elite testers, however, Cave takes to finding homeless people and dragging them to Aperture, forcing them to sign a hefty, suspicious contract. Finally he makes testing a requirement for all employees, which takes a toll as his company loses workers. He resolves to phase out of human testing.
One could make the argument that, literally being the facility, GLaDOS’s views are not a reliable source. You could also make a solid argument that she approved of it, since she steered Cave Johnson back on track to the topic of testing. Besides, Cave Johnson planned on leaving the facility's in Caroline's hands when he died. If she had just been kept in the dark about it, he wouldn't do that.
9/8/2023 Edit: I discovered that Caroline has unused lines saying "Hide the bodies, Mister Johnson," and "No one will notice a few missing astronauts, Mister Johnson," so it's safe to say Aperture's human testing was both condoned and aided by her. (Well, it's called girl power, not girl ethics!)
3: IN RELATION TO CAVE:
At first, it doesn’t look bad. Cave compliments Caroline, calling her “a gem,” “pretty as a postcard,” etc. But that’s not the only reason he likes her; he also states she is “the backbone of the facility.” The dynamic seems fine at first glance. But as Cave’s life neared its end, we got a glimpse of something darker.
There is unused dialogue in which Caroline protests that “Mister Johnson, I don’t want this!” This is generally accepted to be her protests against running Aperture, or being turned into a computer, since Cave claims she’ll “say she can’t” because she’s “modest.” “You make her!” Cave orders, in a pre-recorded message that will play “a million times a day," adding the scientists could "put her in my computer, I don't care" if he "dies before they can pour him into a computer."
This shows us that, while Cave seemed to have a deep respect for Caroline, she is still the assistant, and he is still the boss. There is a power imbalance in their relationship.
And there’s something so poetic about how this dialogue goes unused. We never hear Caroline’s protests, either out loud or in the pre-recorded messages. We never hear them anywhere without poking around in the code. Her protests are suppressed, hidden, and locked away. In the end, we never hear them because it doesn’t matter to anyone what Caroline wanted. It mattered to them what Cave wanted. But her cries are still there. Untouched. Begging for someone to pay attention.
Caroline is also shown to be admiring of Cave. Throughout the entire game, GLaDOS is nothing but cool and calculating. But when Cave gives his lemon speech, GLaDOS is overcome with zeal, suggesting they “not take these lemons,” that they “march right up there and MAKE HIM [Wheatley] put me back in my body” and that “he’ll probably kill us because he’s incredibly powerful and I have no plan! The odds are a million to one and that’s with some generous rounding.” Just hearing Cave yell about his problems is enough to motivate GLaDOS to do something idiotic and dangerous, despite her usual intelligence. And, once GLaDOS is out of Cave’s direct sphere of influence, she makes a more solid plan, though still not “the most watertight,” due to the difficult circumstances. The reason for Caroline’s admiration seems to be that he “says what we’re all thinking,” according to GLaDOS, in reference to him threatening to burn Life’s house down. This suggests Cave was able to quickly rile up the usually sensible Caroline, due to her intense admiration for his attitude.
They were both passionate about science, but they were two halves of the same coin. Caroline was strategic, sensible, may I say the backbone of the facility; Cave was the spirit of the facility, always enthusiastic, impulsive, and erratic in his interactions with his science.
4: CAROLINE DELETED? WHAT EXACTLY IS GLaDOS?/SHE WAS A LOT LIKE YOU
GLaDOS is made up of Caroline, her program, and whatever cores are attached to her at the moment. If GLaDOS deleted Caroline, she’d be killing herself. It’s like deleting System 34. From this we discover that GLaDOS lied, or tried to delete Caroline and failed,  and Caroline is still very much a part of her. It’s even hinted with “Now little Caroline is in here too” in “Want You Gone.”
Speaking of “Want You Gone,” in that very song GLaDOS mentions Caroline was “A lot like you [Chell].” Chell’s most prominent personality trait is her unusual, even deranged, drive and tenacity. From this we can gather that Caroline was probably a determined woman.
CONCLUSION:
In conclusion, Caroline was the witty, tenacious, science-loving assistant of Cave Johnson with iffy morals and a knack for keeping Aperture and Cave on track. Cave forced her to run Aperture and ordered her to be put in his computer. The scientists presumably murdered her and poured her consciousness into GLaDOS, deprived of her memories. After flooding the facility with neurotoxin and testing happily for years, Chell killed her, thus leading to the events of Portal 2, where she journeys to her old home and reunites with her memories of Caroline once again. What a character. Do you think she would have liked the pun in the title?
